Many oxide silver and molybdenum deposits remain undeveloped because chemical extraction yields poor recoveries or is environ-mentally unacceptable. Bio-reductive leaching of such ore samples at MBX resulted in high recoveries of silver and molybdenum. When baseline 3-day cyanide bottle roll tests were conducted on manganiferous oxide silver ore, 13.7% of the silver was extracted. In contrast, 86% of the silver was microbially solubilized into the organic growth medium by bio-reduction with 99.8% dissolution of manganese. A follow-up cyanide bottle roll test yielded an additional 8.5% silver recovery for a total recovery of 94.5%. Baseline 3-day acid bottle roll tests of the iron oxide molybdenum ore yielded 1.8% moly. However, bio-reduction solubilized 93.3% of the moly into the growth medium. An additional 0.3% moly was recovered during the follow-up acid bottle roll test. Microbial treatment of refractory oxide ores with bio-reductive bacteria resulted in higher recoveries of silver and molybdenum than conventional chemical leaching. The bioleaching process occurred at a near-neutral pH at ambient temperatures. The bacterial solubilization of silver and moly was achieved without the use of cyanide or sulfuric acid.

"In order to investigate the stability of embankment on soft subgrade improved by T-shaped deep mixed column composite foundation, the internal forces and failure modes of columns were analyzed on the shape of critical slip surface and the displacement fields of composite foundation through strength reduction method of three dimensional numerical simulation. Then comparison between T-shaped and conventional deep mixed column composite foundation were conducted. The simulation results indicate that the stability analysis was overestimated by limit equilibrium methods. Piles within the slope shoulder provide great resistance slide effect through the vertical bearing capacity, while the piles nearby slope shoulder and outside slope shoulder providing great moment to resistant slip. The embankment stability of T-shaped deep mixed column composite foundation is higher than that of conventional deep mixed column composite foundation while cost less cement and construction time.INTRODUCTIONThe soft soil has many unfavorable project properties such as high compressibility, low strength, and high water component. Embankment built on the soft soil will face subsidence, horizontal displacement and stability problems. Cement-soil deep mixed column composite foundation is more commonly used as a method for construction of embankment on soft ground [1-2]. For the existing problems of China's current cement-soil pile (wet jet mixing pile), including strength uneven, effective treatment with shallow depth and high cost, a new technique, T-shaped bidirectional deep mixed column, is introduced [3]. An automatic expanding mixing blade was developed by Liu et al. shown in Figure. 1, to install TDM columns [4].T-shaped deep mixed (TDM) column combines bi-directional deep mixing technique and T-shaped deep mixing technique: ?Using concentric biaxial drill pipe, opposite rotational direction of the blade on the inner drill pipe and the outer drill pipe. By squeezing action of the blade on the outer drill pipe, forward and reverse rotation of the blades bidirectional mixing at the same time, blocking the way to take the grout, the uniformity of cement mixing is improved. ?Scalable stirring blades, which can be stretched for two different radius at any depth below ground, expand cross-section of the upper pile (enlarged head), forming expanding cross-section within the upper part of a certain depth which is similar to the shape of nail. As a new composite foundation, T-shaped mixing pile composite foundation is widely applied. However, studies on the stability of T-shaped column treated soft subgrade are rare in the research. So the stability study on T-shaped column composite foundation under embankment for guiding the design and construction has important significance."

This study compares the use of an aminophosphonate chelating resin Purolite S950 and a sulphonic acid strong cation exchange resin Purolite C160H to recover nickel and cobalt from the synthetic bioleach solutions. Batch adsorption of metal citrate is performed as a function of metal citrate concentration (15~2000 mg/L) and solution pH (0.01M and 0.1M citric acid). The adsorption mechanism as inferred from the fit to Langmuir (LM), Freundlich (FM) and Redlich-Peterson (RP) models demonstrates that nickel citrate adsorbed onto C160H appears monolayer in comparison to that adsorbed onto S950 exists multilayer. In contrast, cobalt citrate adsorption onto both C160H and S950 agrees with the LM model. The results have shown that loading capacities of nickel and cobalt citrate onto C160H are 60 and 65 mg/g whereas those observed onto S950 are 16mg/g and 6 mg/g respectively. These are achieved in metal citrate prepared in 0.1 M citric acid. Resin regeneration is conducted in using 2 M nitric acid solution. The results show high efficiency of nickel and cobalt citrate elution from Purolite C160H. Findings from this study suggest Purolite C160H is a suitable adsorbent for recovering nickel and cobalt from bioleaching solutions.

The Synthetic Rutile (SR) plant operations, North Capel, produce electrostatic precipitator (ESP) fume and kiln scrubber residue. Typically ESP contains about 18 per cent Ti, 13 per cent Fe, 0.5 per cent Mn, eight per cent Si, six per cent Al, 16 per cent C, 0.9 per cent Zn, 0.6 per cent Pb, 300 ppm As, 300 ppm Cr and 5 ppm Cd. These wastes are held in a storage dam together with neutralised acid effluent (AE) liquor. A project was initiated to treat the fume and produce a benign residue that could be delivered to landfill, reducing dam space storage. Plant AE, containing free acid (9 - 14 g/L), Fe (6 - 7 g/L) and Mn (1 g/L), was used to leach ESP. The degree of extraction achieved for various elements include about 20 per cent Zn, almost 50 per cent As, five per cent Al, 0.4 per cent Pb and 15 per cent Cd. Extraction was most effective at pH The residue from AE leaching still contained Pb. TCLP tests of the leach residue produced Pb extraction significantly higher than the 0.1 ppm stipulated by Class 2 landfill guidelines. Other elements (eg As, Cd, Cr) successfully met the limits. Further leaching of the residue with EDTA extracted up to 65 per cent of Pb content. TCLP tests on treated residue showed Pb leaching potential of Lead was removed from the leach circuit as the sulphate by acidification of EDTA leach liquor, allowing EDTA to be recycled. The study showed that one waste stream can be used to treat another and help reduce plant waste.

Generally speaking, wastewater coming from the metallurgical process for recovering precious metal contains precious metals such as gold (Au), platinum (Pt), palladium (Pd), Silver (Ag), etc., which concentration is about 10 mg/L. In addition, there are other metals such as copper (Cu), iron (Fe), which concentration varies from several mg/L to more than 10,000 mg/L. It should be noted that the concentration of metals in wastewater is relatively high, considering the fact that these metals of similar concentration can be found in ores. However, most of these valuable metals are not treated, due to the high processing cost and technical problems. Within this frame, the authors put forward a new process that includes neutralization/reduction, precipitation and fusion. The idea is to recover and recycle Au, Ag, and Pd metals as well as protecting the environment by saving the resources. It was found that this new process was able to recover more than 90% of Au, Ag and Pd.

Fine mineral particles pose two challenging problems in froth flotation, i.e., ineffective recovery of fine hydrophobic particles and mechanical entrainment of fine hydrophilic particles. The first problem has attracted much research effort while the second problem has received much less attention. We have recently proposed a method to deal with mechanical entrainment, i.e., utilizing the flocculating power of polymeric depressants to flocculate fine gangue particles and making the flocs big enough so that the mechanical entrainment of these particles can be reduced or eliminated. In this paper, we report results on the use of polyethylene oxide (PEO) in controlling quartz gangue in the flotation of sulphide ores. PEO was found to flocculate fine quartz and lower its entrainment. It was also found to modify air/water interfacial properties and acted as a frother, which could increase gangue entrainment. Nevertheless, when used at starvation dosages, PEO was found to significantly improve the grades of the floated sulphide concentrates.

Bubble nucleation in water under dynamic conditions was investigated using an autoclave at an air saturation pressure of 7 atm. Agitation during air saturation of water was found to be crucial in enhancing tiny bubble formation. More bubbles nucleated on hydrophobic surfaces at a higher agitation rate, due to cavity formation by the more intense hydrodynamic conditions. Flotation recovery of bitumen from oil sands demonstrated a significant role of bubbles nucleated in water: more than 50-170% increase in bitumen recovery from different oil sands was obtained by using air supersaturated than the regular water.

Particle processing is a key to using solid particles in fuel cell applications. Selectivity with regard to reactivity, impurities, etc. is important feature and the treatment of particle surfaces could greatly impact the performance of direct carbon fuel cells. Solid fuel particles will become increasingly important in the future. Present energy conversion systems for solid fuels are too inefficient. New energy conversion systems for solid fuels with higher energy conversion efficiencies are possible. Fuel cell technology is a key-technology in these new conversion systems. The direct carbon fuel cell (DCFC) operates on carbon particles obtained from a variety of solid fuel feedstocks. The DCFC is the only fuel cell designed to directly oxidize carbon particles in a special anode chamber. The particles are generally graphite structure with high purity. The electrolyte used is the high temperature solid oxide, molten carbonate or hydroxide electrolyte. Since a pure stream of CO2 is produced the stream can easily be sequestered and disposed. Pure carbon dioxide produced as a by-product would also have a market in many industries. A well-defined technology roadmap identifying key research and development (R&D) issues is necessary to provide a framework for the development of these systems and to prevent entrenchment in inherently inefficient technologies. This review paper describes the direct carbon fuel cell and its system, how it works, the developmental status, the characteristics of the carbon particles needed, and the research and development issues for the technology. INTRODUCTION The DCFC has been under development for many years. It was researched as early as 18961), but an intense research and development is necessary to realize its potential. William W Jacques, a US electrical engineer and chemist, described a DCFC in 1896 in US Patent 555511 for a “Method of converting potential energy of carbon into electrical energy”. Jacques used coke electrodes in a molten NaOH electrolyte. Molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC), solid oxide (SOFC) or hydroxide electrolyte (AFC) technologies can be used as the basis for the DCFC technology. A schematic of the direct carbon fuel cell in the MCFC mode is shown in Figure 1. The molten carbonate fuel cell operates at approximately 650°C (1200°F). The high operating temperature is needed to achievesufficient conductivity of the carbonate electrolyte, yet allow the use of low-cost metal cell components. There are approximately 68 million rockbolts installed annually in underground coal mines in the USA (Tadolini and Mazzoni, 2006). The most utilized is the passive fully grouted resin rebar bolt, which constitutes almost 90% of the primary support in US underground coal mines. Resin-grouted rockbolts are a very effective and safe support, but their performance still needs to be further optimized and improved. This paper investigates their performance and suggests operating conditions to optimize the performance of resin-grouted rockbolts. In addition, this paper discusses a small-scale test that can also be used to evaluate the performance of rockbolts that is quicker, easier, and less costly than short encapsulation tests.

The United States on a daily basis no consumes about 15MM barrels (2.38 x 106m3) of oil; 5MM (0.79 x 106 m3) of this is imported. This compares tai a daily consumption of 18MM (2.86 x 106 m3) in 1980 when we imported 8MM (1.27 x 106 m3). We are producing the 10MM barrels (1.59 x 106 m3 ) of conventional oil at home from what amounts to just 2% of our domestic energy reserves. Nearly 90% of our total domestic energy reserves occurs in solid forms such as coal, oil shale, and tar sands; this is more than enough to meet our needs for the next 100 years. Worldwide, oil shale is second only to coal as a potential source of energy and the U.S. has approximately one-half of the world oil shale reserves which average over 25 gallons per ton (10.43 x 10-2 L/kg). Since the United States has immense oil shale resources, including some of the richest in the world, and since oil shale produces a superior transportation fuel, it would seem logical that the U.S. would be prudently developing this domestic resource. Unfortunately, despite over 50 years of research and a number of false starts, there is not a commercial shale oil industry in place today. There are a number of recurring roadblocks which have hindered private industry's efforts to develop oil shale and we will look at some of these.

"Synthetic rutile for paints industry is conventionally produced by a combined smelting and leaching process. Smelting process is an energy intensive step and represents economic burden in view of the increasing energy costs. Egyptian ilmenite ore containing 40% TiO2 and 38% total Fe was thus directly leached with sulphuric acid to produce eventually synthetic rutile. The process-involves digestion of the ore with sulphuric acid whereby both TiO2 and Fe are dissolved. The solution was then treated with iron powder to convert Fe3+ to Fe2+ to avoid co-precipitation of iron during the hydrolysis step. After solid/liquid separation and clarification, Fe was crystallized as ferrous sulphate hydrate by chilling. The titanium pregnant liquor was concentrated by evaporation and then hydrolyzed to precipitate hydrated titanium dioxide which was then calcined to produce synthetic rutile containing 98.6 TiO2 and 0.58% Fe2O 3. The optimum conditions of all the processing stages were determined.IntroductionSynthetic rutile for paints, welding rods and other industries could be produced from ilmenite ore by sulfuric acid leaching process. A hydrometallurgical process has been tested at the Sherritt Research Centre for separation of zinc, lead, copper and precious metal values from the zinc oxide fume leach residue stockpiled at the HBM&S operations in Flin Flon, Manitoba. Zinc is found primarily as zinc femte and sphalerite in the residue, lead as lead sulphate and jarosite, and copper as sulphide and jarositic compounds. Gypsum and siliceous gangue are significant diluents. The separation process includes hot acid, atmospheric and reducing (sulphur dioxide) leaching; zinc, copper and lead flotation; and atmospheric iron removal steps. Zinc is recovered to a high strength zinc sulphate solution and to a zinc sulphide concentrate suitable for feed to a roaster or to a zinc pressure leach plant; lead to a high grade lead sulphate concentrate suitable for feed to a lead smelter, and copper to a high grade copper sulphide concentrate suitable for feed to a copper smelter. Precious metals are divided between the zinc, lead and copper concentrates.

"We have recently proposed a new ""EQ Coating"" bond coat system to solve the problem of secondary reaction zone (SRZ) formation caused by bond coats applied on the hot section components of modem jet engines. A viable EQ coating alloy was previously found for a representative znd generation superalloy, TMS-82+. It would be ideal if the same could be done for a representative 5th generation superalloy, TMS-173. In this paper, we will show that the coating with the best oxidation resistance in the EQ system of TMS-173, although possessing considerably better resistance than TMS-173, did not have sufficient oxidation resistance. In order to improve the oxidation resistance of the EQ coating for TMS-173, we have ventured into ""Pseudo-EQ coatings"". A diffusion couple between the Pseudo-EQ coating and TMS-173, after 300hrs at 1100°C, had a 0-15µm IDZ, but no SRZ. A diffusion couple between a conventional coating and TMS-173 formed a 80-150 µm SRZ. After a 1 hr oxidation test at 1100°C, the PseudoEQ coating formed a thinner oxide layer than the EQ coating, but still contained NiO and spinel. Aerospace"

The Mule Canyon gold deposit, located 14 miles ESE of Battle Mountain, Nevada, was discovered in 1986 as the result of a GFMC grass-roots exploration program. Drilling to date has identified six discrete orebodies which contain a demonstrated gold reserve of 8.487 million tons at an average grade of 0.136 oz/ton, totaling 1,152,000 ounces. Mineralization is associated with argillic alteration and silicification, localized along NNW trending high-angle faults within Miocene basaltic andesites. Trace element geochemistry at Mule Canyon is typical of upper level hot spring precious metal systems, displaying elevated Ag, As, Sb, Hg, and Se.

The purpose of this paper is to bring to your attention the various kinds of high performance graphites available today, their characteristics and possible applications. These materials are products of a proprietary high temperature technology developed by Superior Graphite Company. We feel we have only begun to tap the potential of this technology and the utilization of the resulting products. During the course of the paper, we shall investigate high purity, high performance graphites made from raw materials such as mined natural graphites, synthetic graphites and petroleum derivatives. We shall define their characteristics and resulting benefits to current applications, along with applications currently under development. It is our desire to stimulate speculation and development of current high performance graphites and their applications as well as ideas for new high performance products and applications. First, a little background about the process. The technology was developed through a concentrated R&D effort which culminated in 1976 in the construction of a unique furnace capable of continuously processing tonnage quantities of granular carbons at temperatures in excess of 2,500 degrees C. This process is capable of refining various carbonaceous raw materials, including natural graphites, to levels of purity and consistency that were previously unattainable in commercial quantities. Carbon contents in excess of 99.9% are currently being produced on a continuous flow-through basis. Since beginning operation in 1977, this plant, located in Hopkinsville, KY, has been expanded in stages to its present capacity of producing over 45,000 tons of purified graphites and graphitic carbons per year. In addition to the purification process, the technology used allows the introduction of selected elements into the carbon/graphite structure to provide additional benefits. Elements of interest include boron, silicon, copper, iron and rare earths. The characteristics of and applications for some of these products will be discussed later.

The empirical McCracken and Stacey stability and risk assessment method has been in use for more than 20 years to assess geotechnical stability issues for raise bored shafts. The methodology has been applied with various levels of success. Increasingly, trends in mining and civil tunnelling have been towards larger diameter, single pass, raise bored shafts to rapidly provide means of ventilation, material movement (ore passes), or emergency egress. Identifying and assessing potentially problematic zones before raise boring commences can allow for appropriate risk-based decisions on construction, or to investigate alternative solutions. The implementation of a proactive solution to raising through an identified weak zone is preferred to the application of an engineered solution to an area subjected to substantial instability or failure. Methods for investigating potentially problematic areas are discussed in this paper based on AMC’s benchmarking data. Proactive investigation programmes resulting from these investigations are also discussed. Previous publications discussing the benchmarking data have concentrated on Australian case studies. Increased efforts and recent updates have been made to expand the database to include international case studies. This has provided further refinement of lower bound ‘raise bore rock quality index’ (QR) values, and various rock mass parameters for stability assessments. A rapid recovery/recycling process was introduced utilizing the surface-chemical properties of finely dispersed mercury and alumina (Al2O3) fibers in aqueous environment. The conventional method of amalgamation or .ball milling. involves the mixing of a substantial amount of mercury to collect free gold during the grinding stage. In effect, a portion of the mercury is transformed into minute droplets that readily float and disperse in the amalgamation effluent. The fine droplets of mercury in the dispersion readily attached onto the positively charged macroscopic alumina fibers (i.e. = pH 9.8) at conditions pH 3 to 10. When an effluent from settling procedure after an amalgamation-grinding stage is passed through a column-bed packed with alumina fibers, maximum collection of negatively charged finely dispersed mercury occurred at pH 3 to 6. The collection/attachment efficiency was 99.5%. The collected droplets of mercury, which are left in the column-bed of alumina fibers, were subsequently rinsed with alkaline solution at pH 10 to 11.5. At these conditions, both mercury and alumina fibers carry negative surface potentials and resulted in the partial detachment of mercury from the alumina fibers. The detachment efficiency was only 30-35%. The attachment/detachment mechanisms in this study were analyzed using the DLVO theory.

Texas Gulf Sulphur Company's Lee Creek Mine has opened a major phosphate mining district in the Central Coastal Plains of North Carolina (Fig. 1). The ore deposit as it is now known was roughly outlined in 1961 by a Texas Gulf geologist using wire line exploration methods. Slightly uraniferous phosphate materials were detected by a slim-hole gamma ray probe run in numerous farmers' water wells penetrating the formations. A follow-up-core drilling pro- gram determined the economic ore limits to lie in the south central section of Beaufort County beneath 70 feet to 120 feet of unconsolidated sediments. The 50,000 acre deposit is known to contain over two billion tons of phosphate ore amenable to strip mining methods. A part of the deposit underlies several thousand acres of the Pamlico River estuary. The 90 million dollar capital investment plant built by Texas Gulf during 1965-66 included a strip mining operation using a 72-yard walking dragline, a three million product ton per year flotation concentrator, four fluid bed calciners, a sulphuric acid plant (acid for captive use), a phosphoric acid plant, and three solid fertilizer material plants. Shipment to domestic markets is by rail and truck and to over- seas markets by barge to a transshipment terminal at Morehead City, North Carolina. Early mining investigations were conclusive first that the phosphate ore could economically be recovered only by dry strip mining methods, and second that artesian ground waters in the formation (Castle Hayne limestone) underlying the ore would have to be controlled. This report will relate the application of ground water hydrology in depressurizing the Castle Hayne aquifer to facilitate dry strip mining at depths 130 feet below sea level at the Lee Creek Mine.

"Zipf Jr., R.K. and Bieniawski; Z.T., 1989. A fundamental study of respirable dust generation in coal. Min. Sci. Technol., 9: 87-99Black lung disease in coal miners induced by the formation of fine fragments of coal imposes very high human and direct costs. A fundamental understanding of the fracture processes leading to fine-fragment formation in coal by applying principles of fracture mechanics is presented. A four-step hypothesis is proposed which sequentially describes the mechanics of fine-fragment formation during a generic coal material—coal cutting tool interaction. These steps include: (1) development of a crush zone under the tool tip, (2) macrocrack propagation. (3) shear movement along macrocracks, and (4) additional fragmentation from shear. This model contains two sources of fine fragments, namely crushing under the tool tip and shearing along the macrocrack surfaces. Three critical assumptions are made that require experimentation. First, the coal material must contain flaws of sufficient density and sufficiently small size to liberate fine fragments by crushing. The following conceptual relationships are proposed between flaw size, spacing and fragmentation: first, the active flaw size must be less than the desired particle size and second, the spacing (or density) must be in the order of the particle size. The second major assumption is that a mixed mode fracture theory will describe the initiation and crack growth direction for the microscopic inherent flaws. The third assumption is that some degree of roughness damage, and interlocking exist along the newly formed macrocrack surfaces such that a small amount of shear movement along that surface leads to additional particle formation at a microscopic scale. Preliminary analysis of the mechanical regime under a cutting tool tip places order of magnitude bounds on the stresses strains, cycle time, stress rates and strain rates. Even though the tool moves and loads the coal material with considerable speed, a quasi-static stress analysis is applicable in this region.Introduction.The generation of fine fragments (respirable dust) during various coal mining processes may lead to the incidence of coal workers pneumoconiosis (black lung disease). The human and direct cost of dust-induced illnesses in coal miners is very large. By several. accounts [1,2] the Federal Government paid out about $12 billion to almost 500,000 coal miners and their beneficiaries between 1970 and 1980. In addition, several states and many coal operators have established their own compensation programs at costs ranging from a few cents to several dollars per ton of coal mined [2]. Since 1980, 'the present liability of the Federal disability trust fund has approached $20 billion and the benefit payments exceed $1 billion per year. There .are also hidden costs due to dust, in the form of increased equipment wear and decreased operator productivity, both of which are due to the poor operating environment. Quantifying these costs may be difficult; however, they may be in the same range as the present pneumoconiosis costs. These high human and direct dollar costs may be prevented or reduced through long term research efforts directed at understanding the generation and control of respirable dust and the incidence of black lung disease."

In this paper, as in the 1960 CIM paper of the same name, s1gmf1cant new developments in electrical-mechanical mining equipment are briefly described. These include static thyristor-supplied D.C. drives for mine hoists, load-haul-dump systems, process controls with small and medium-size computers, and several other new items of equipment and Concepts. All the new hardware descriptions are given in the context of over-all process integration.
