"The extraction of gold in the Philippines has been a significant challenge for the past decades. Around 70-75% of gold mined in the country can be accounted from the small-scale mining industry which primarily use the traditional cyanidation and amalgamation; processes which have been advocated due to its adverse affects to health and environment. To address this challenge, an alternative clean and sustainable technology was developed for the small-scale miners to recover gold and other metal/mineral values efficiently from Philippine ores. An initial survey was conducted and followed through with extensive mineralogical investigations ascertain the best method applicable. It was determined that Philippine gold occur in ore as (1) very fine particles in the microns range, (2) free-milling, which is in abundance, and (3) locked particles with sulfides --- it was concluded that enhanced gravity concentration and flotation are viable alternatives. A comprehensive test regime was followed to check the response of the ores obtained from different small-scale mining districts across the country. It was shown conclusively that the gold ores respond positively, with recoveries using gravity concentration and flotation of at least 95% and 88%, respectively; exceeding the nominal recoveries using cyanidation or amalgamation. A specific process flow was designed for each type of ore with customized parameters. It was determined that while capital expenditure of implementing these alternative processes is higher than what is currently being used, the operational aspects show that it is much more economical to apply enhanced gravity and flotation. It should be noted that the process developed addresses the critical issue of environmental costs which should be more than enough to justify the shift from the current to the novel and sustainable technologies."

High-pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) are an accepted, but continuously expanding, comminution technology. The copper industry has a growing need to process harder ores with progressively lower grades, more challenging metallurgy and increasing demand for efficient bacterial leaching applications. This has resulted in a major focus on HPGR use in a crushing circuit. If the industry is to increase leach extraction while lowering energy costs in high-throughput hydrometallurgical operations, HPGR will be of inherent significance. The following paper summarizes test work on copper leach ores utilizing the benefits of HPGR comminution, while increasing several critical metallurgical parameters. Based on the current work and previous investigations, it was found that HPGR comminution within a crushing circuit, in specific instances, can result in 2 - >10% increases in cop-per extraction. The tested variables are crush size, rock type and copper mineralogy dependence. Various other process parameters may also be optimized.

"The aim of this study was to develop an approach for the selectively removal of Zn(II) from heavy metal-bearing-wastewaters produced by gold chemical industry using magnetic chitosan based adsorbents. Chitosan beads were prepared by cross-linked modification of Fe3O4-chitosan bead using epichlorohydrin as the cross-linker. Both Zn(II) inprinted magnetic chitosan hydrogel bead (Zn-MCHB) and unprinted magnetic chitosan hydrogel bead (MCHB) were prepared and batch adsorption experiments were used to evaluate their adsorption capacities and selectivities. Single adsorption of Cu2+, Pb2+, Zn2+ and Ni2+ showed that both MCHB and Zn-MCHB adsorbs all the four metals and had an affinity in the order of Cu2+ > Pb2+ > Zn2+ > Ni2+. The binary adsorption revealed that the two adsorbents preferentially adsorb Cu2+/Pb2+ from Zn2+-Cu2+/ Zn2+-Pb2+ binary systems. However, MCHB does not show any selectivity in Zn2+-Ni2+ system. In contrast, Zn- MCHB preferentially adsorbs Zn2+ from Zn2+-Ni2+ binary system. Furthermore, the adsorption selectivity is predictable from stability constants of the metals with the amino group of chitosan. The information revealed in this work can be used for further applications in the treatment of wastewater containing a range of heavy metals from the gold chemical industry."

The increasing mining depths of South African gold mine deposits are resulting in ever-increasing heat loads associated with depth and the geothermal gradient. Together with changes in the mining horizons brought about by the depletion of older, shallower, high-grade reserves, this leads to the need for the continuous review and redesign of cooling requirements. Traditionally, cooling requirements were met by using a combination of cooling strategies, including bulk air cooling on surface and underground. If this proved to be insufficient, chilled service water and secondary remote air-cooling systems were introduced. This paper reviews these practices in order to provide a cost-effective means of catering for the introduction of hydropower at the Gold Fields Ltd South African operations. Some of the equipment that has been developed to meet the requirements of both hydropower and refrigeration includes hydropower fans, cooling coils and in-stope venturis. These are individually described and discussed, together with their roles within the greater strategy. The planned change in the cooling strategy and the employment of these technologies have effectively doubled the cooling available, from 10 MW to more than 20 MW, extracted from the hydropower water used to drive the mining equipment. In conclusion, the cooling strategy described allows a total heat load of approximately 52 MW to be successfully ventilated and cooled through the use of combined surface and underground refrigeration installations, and through the use of hydropower-chilled water.

Cassiterite deposits on Sullivan Creek in central Alaska were investigated by the Bureau of Mines in the spring of 1943. Gold miners in the area have been recovering cassitorite each season as a byproduct of gold placer operations. Approximately 300 tons of tin concentrates have been shipped from the district. The deposits were sampled though trenches and small shafts. An average tin content of 0.28 pound per cubic yard was indicated. A detailed description of sampling methods and sample analyses is presented in this report.

The 31st annual American Hall of Fame Awards Banquet and Fundraiser sponsored by the Mining Foundation of the Southwest (MFSW) will be held at the JW Marriott Tucson Starr Pass Resort on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013. Each year, one living inductee, two Medal of Merit recipients, honorees from mining?s past, an industry partnership award, as well as a special citation, are recognized by the MFSW for their respective contributions to the mining industry. James D. Toole, past president and chief executive officer of Southwest Energy LLC, will be the Hall of Fame inductee, guest of honor, and featured speaker at the awards banquet. Toole founded Southwest Energy LLC in 1973 and is credited with introducing innovative explosive technology, providing even greater value to its mining customers. Medals of Merit will be awarded to Joseph M. Keane, principal metallurgical engineer for SGS Metcon Research/KD Engineering, and Sean D. Dessureault, associate professor at the University of Arizona. Keane is recognized for his metallurgical expertise, especially in design development and pollution abatement. Dessureault is recognized for his advanced mining research, with more than 25 journal publications, and his entrepreneurship as the founder and chief executive officer of two mineral-related companies. To honor mining?s past, the hall of fame will induct Bartolomé de Medina for his invention of the patio process for recovering silver; Ben Williams for his management of the Copper Queen Mine in Bisbee, AZ; Charles E. Mills for his contributions at Morenci and Inspiration Copper and founding Apache Powder Co. and The Valley National Bank; John S. Finlay and Edwin B. Royle for their invention of the mucking machine; and Louis Caryl Graton for his ore deposits research and teaching economic geology at Harvard University.

Although the Sagasca deposit has been known for 76 years, the property was never put into successful operation because of various adverse factors including low market price for copper, legal entanglements, unsuccessful financial arrangements, and an inadequate metallurgical process. Late in 1963, Continental Copper & Steel Industries, Inc., obtained legal control of this property. Since that time there has been a concentrated effort to complete the necessary mine appraisal, process development, and engineering design, and to solve the legal and financial problems to bring this property into production.

"The research aimed at improving the way screen performance analysis is conducted using a model that accounts for most feed and design parameters in its formulation. Thus, the aim was to validate the fine screen model that was developed at the Centre for Minerals Research (CMR) unit at the University of Cape Town. Fine wet screening is increasingly becoming an important application in fine grinding operations. Minera Saucito, a lead-zinc Mexican mine has replaced hydrocyclones with eight stacks of five decker derrick screens to close the ball mill in their concentrator plant. The five decker stacks have improved the overall plant throughput by 20% and have had the ball mill circulating load reduced considerably. As a continuous plant optimization process, a number of surveys were carried out to assess the performance of the 75 µm panel aperture installed screens. The surveys were conducted at seven different feed rates to the entire nest of screens to collect performance data. Using the fine screen model to analyze the results, it is found that as the feed rate increase, the sharpness of separation reduces. The CMR fine screen model was fitted to these results. The model fits the plant data with good accuracy. Simulated results based on this model are also presented.INTRODUCTION The potential of high frequency vibrating screens has long been identified as an alternative to hydrocyclones in grinding applications (Rogers and Brame, 1985). However, high frequency vibrating screens have had two main disadvantages, low capacity and high wear rates (Kelley and Mckeon, 2005; Teknikk, 2009). Current vibrating screen technology overcomes these challenges by multiple deck screen design and use of wear resistant urethane materials for panel construction (Kelley, 2007; Valine and Wennen, 2002). For a example, the Derrick screen’s material of construction is a tensionable urethane that provide high open area ranging between 35 to 45% with considerably reduced blinding (Valine and Wennen, 2002). Thus, there has been an increased uptake by the mining industry in the use of wet fine vibrating screens closing the ball mill as the final classification stage in the comminution circuit (Barkhuysen et al., 2010; Frausto, Ballantyne et al. 2017; Pelevin and Lazebnaya, 2009; Teknikk, 2009). Even though there is a number of models in existence, none of these models adequately predict the performance of high frequency vibrating screens (Karra, 1979; Rogers, 1982; Subasinghe et al., 1990; Trumic and Magdalinovic, 2011). Recently Mwale et al., (2016) developed a model for predicting the performance of high frequency vibrating screens using the partition curve properties. The input parameters of the model include screen open area (??) in m2, tonnage feed rate (????) (tph) and the weight fraction of solids (??) in the feed for a given panel aperture size. The model was developed based on data collected from a single deck industrial size derrick screen, in a pilot setup. The work presented in this paper is an attempt to test this model using data collected from Minera Saucito concentrator, an industrial plant whose comminution circuit is shown in Figure."

The paper point out that the carbonate Carbonate Replacement Deposits (CRDs) are epigenetic, intrusion-related, high-temperature sulfide-dominant Pb-Zn-Ag-Cu-Au-rich deposits that typically form lenses or elongate to elongate-tabular bodies referred to as mantos or chimneys. Recent studies have shown that CRDs do occur in predictable geologic environments, allowing focusing of regional exploration. In addition, they have mappable alteration patterns that can be used to determine the magnitude of a given system and elemental zoning patterns that greatly enhance the chances of drilling success. Several recent discoveries of “blind” replacement deposits have been made by careful field evaluation of host and capping rocks coupled with geophysics.

Lowering of filter cake moisture of ultra-fine coal to a 20 percent level using conventional vacuum filtration could be achieved using a combination of metal ion and surfactants. Pretreating coal slurry with about 0.2 Kg/ton of a surfactant and 50 ppm of copper or 10 ppm of aluminum ions provided filter cake containing 22.8 percent moisture. The lowering of moisture is explained due to formation of hydrophobic micro-agglomerates which facilitates dewatering.

"To minimize ore dilution induced by blast movement in surface mines, it is necessary to quantify such movement. This will enable more accurate location of the grade boundaries beneath the surface of a blasted rock pile before excavation. A method has been developed and tested to accurately measure the direction and magnitude of subsurface blast movement. This technique uses a cesium vapour gradiometer and a real-time, differentially corrected GPS system to locate pre- and post-blast position of magnetically enhanced target objects placed within blastholes inside a bench. The procedure developed does not require the blasted rock to be disturbed, and the movement information is available within a sufficient time to allow for modification of the selective mining boundaries for each surveyed blast. It was found that the maximum depth of target detection was 18 m, with the overall accuracy being measured as ±1 m (horizontally) and ± 1.2 m (vertically). IntroductionOre dilution is a critical concern for many mining operations. In some instances, it may be the cause of considerable mineral loss. Where the mineralization is finely grained, sedimentary and disseminated in nature, and exhibits no clearly defined visual ore/waste boundary, there is a heightened possibility for ore grade dilution. In most modern open pit gold mines, it is economically desirable to minimize dilution in the production process through the practice of selective mining by defining pre-blast ore digging boundaries, called digging polygons, on the preblast bench area. The polygons’ positions are defined by sampling the production drill holes, with the resultant assay and survey data being used to estimate the areas of specified grade content within the bench. Once the ore is blasted in the bench, the pre-blast locations of these digging polygons are flagged as designated areas on the broken ore pile. The purpose is for the loader operator to be able to recognize which areas of blasted rock are to be sent to the appropriate processing facility or to the waste dump."

"Research has shown that broken rock on conveyor transport systems can contribute upwards of 50% towards the overall heat load in underground mines. However, few studies have made significant efforts to predict the temperature distribution of the ore and air simultaneously, which can help implement heat management strategies. The present investigation explores a transient, analytical heat transfer model to track ore-pile temperature distributions, along conveyor systems in an example underground mine. Production rate, ambient conditions, ore pile thickness and belt velocity are adjusted to evaluate the effect on dry and wet bulb temperatures.INTRODUCTIONWith an ever increasing demand on Earth’s resources due to a multitude of factors like population growth and step changes in technology, pressure on the mining industry to bring out more ore with improved margins is a persistent challenge. Typically, high-volume producing mining methods (i.e., exceeding 5000 tons per day (tpd)) such as sublevel and block caving, room and pillar, and longwall shall utilize belt conveyors instead of trucks as the primary haulage method to surface to save on operational costs (de la Vergne, 2014). However, studies have shown that when such material transport systems are installed at mine depths with virgin rock temperatures (VRT) above 40oC, the heat dissipated by the conveyed ore can account for over 50% of the underground heat-load (Pareja, 2000; Bluhm, Jones, Moreby, & von Glehn, 2012; van den Berg, Moreby, & Kok, 2015).Unlike other types of heat sources encountered in underground mines, such as diesel machines, strata, electrical devices, and autocompression, heat transfer by conveyed broken rock is much more difficult to estimate. The seminal work of McPherson (1993) states that broken rock heat transfer is a function of its surface area, and the air’s psychrometric condition. It is additionally a function of the VRT, its specific heat, production rate, heat transfer coefficient and the residence time (Bossard, 1997; Ross, Tuck, Stokes, & Lowndes, 1997). Consequently, few studies have attempted to analytically quantify the significance of ore heat flow."

The Bureau of Mines is investigating methods to treat waste water that contains cyanide. This report describes a new method that removes heavy metals and all forms of cyanide. In the first step, hydrogen peroxide and sodium thiosulfate are added at pH 7 to 9 in a 1:2 molar ratio to convert free and weakly complexed cyanide to nontoxic thiocyanate. Then steryldimethylbenzylammonium chloride is added to precipitate ferro-cyanide, and finally, ferric sulfate is added as a sweep floc and sequestrant for heavy metals. After the suspended solids settle, the water is polished by filtering. The water initially contained 1 to 5 mg/L Fe, 1 to 5 mg/L Cu, and 10 to 30 mg/L total cyanide; the level of each of these constituents was reduced to less than 0.02 mg/L.

"In the flotation process the contact angle is an important indicator of the hydrophobicity of a mineral particle. There is considerable literature showing that the contact angle increases when the chain length of the alkyl group associated with the collector molecule used to render the valuable mineral particle hydrophobic increases. The extent to which an alkyl group interacts with surrounding water molecules is quantified thermodynamically by the excess Gibbs energy. In the present paper it is shown that there exists generally a strong linear relationship between the excess Gibbs energy of the alkyl group associated with the collector and the contact angle. The structure-activity of such alkyl groups is in turn related to the total surface area, molecular volume, the molar volume, molecular weight of the functional groups in the molecule and interaction energies. It is proposed that the demonstrated relationship is indicative of the role which the alkyl group component of the collector, which is attached to the mineral particle, plays in increasing the extent to which water molecules at the surface of the mineral are rejected from the surface thus increasing the contact angle. The relationship between excess Gibbs energy and surface tension is further explored with a view to relating the observations quantitatively to the parameters in the Young equation.INTRODUCTIONThe issue of wettability of materials is of great importance to many industrial applications. Wettability studies usually involve the measurement of contact angles which indicate the degree of wetting when a solid and liquid interact. As is well known the contact angle (O) is the angle between planes tangent to the surfaces of the solid and the liquid at the wetting perimeter which is the zone where the air, water and solid phase merge. When the air bubble attaches to the solid surface there is an increase in the air/solid interface area and a decrease in the solid/water interface area. For attachment to occur the cosine of the contact angle should be less than 1 and this will be promoted if the interfacial surface tension between the air and the solid (? SV) is low. Classically the relationship between these parameters has been expressed through the Young equation (1) for a perfectly flat surface:"

The modern drilling fluids industry is a dynamic, evolutionary environment. It is continuously striving to satisfy and anticipate the ever-changing needs of the oil and gas industry. The predominant driving forces in the industry over the past decade have changed dramatically. Health and environmental issues, coupled with economic and performance requirements, demand innovation and change from the drilling fluids industry. Emerging drilling fluid technologies will demand environmental considerations from mined components with additional emphasis on cost and performance criteria. Drilling fluids providers continue to search for and identify environmentally sensitive components which meet or exceed the performance of their more toxic predecessors. These changes have and will impact the components of drilling fluids that are mined.

A large overburden blast was carried out at Douglas Colliery, Middelburg Mine Services, close to a national road in South Africa. The road is a busy route between Witbank and Bethal and damage to the road could not be risked. The section of road next to the blast was particularly prone to damage, because it had been mined out on its eastern flank, and the large blast was to take place on its western flank. There were thus three potential damage risks: 1. Fly rock damage to the road surface 2. Vibration damage to the road substrate 3. Damage caused by bulk displacement of the block supporting the road into the void on the mined out side. This paper presents the design and blasting methods used to control the blast and avoid these three risks. Electronic delay detonators were used in multi-decked holes. Signature data were used to determine the blast timing to make sure that delays were used that would provide destructive interference. The timing direction and sequence was decided using wave interference patterns to direct repeated shocks away from the road. The precise detonators and the odelling capability allowed effective control of the blast vibration result. Each hole was charged with two explosive decks separated by a deck of aggregate to limit the charge mass fired per delay and thus limit the reaction forces acting towards the unsupported road. The vibration and blast results are presented in the paper, together with the design that was applied. Details are provided on how the blast was charged and primed. Petroleum coke is becoming an increasingly important source of light hydrocarbon products as product crudes become heavier and of poorer quality. The use of petroleum coke to generate synthesis gas results in the formation of residual slags that are enriched in silica, alumina, sulfides, oxides, and free metals. The characterization of these slags and their con? stituent phases is an essential step in considering the ultimate use or disposal of such slags and in understanding how to alter the properties of the slags to optimize the efficiency of gasifiers. Depending upon temperatures and bulk compositions, quenched slags typically consist of silicate glasses, calcium silicates, iron-nickel oxide-sulfide masses, aluminate spinels and free metals. Whereas the glasses contain relatively uniformly dispersed metals and sulfur, the iron-nickel oxide-sulfide masses highly concentrate nickel and sulfur. The aluminate spinels very effectively concentrate vanadium and chromium, thus depleting glasses or other adjacent phases. The abundance as well as the make up of the slags strongly affects the physical behavior of the slags within the gasifiers

"Microseismic monitoring provides insight into the location and extent of rock-mass fracturing induced by cave mining, enabling interpretation of the cave profile and validation of predictive numerical models. Source location uncertainties can lead to misinterpretation of the inferred characteristics of the fracture network. One principal source of uncertainty is the velocity model used to invert the location algorithm. Large-scale 3D numerical models of modulus changes across a caved mass can represent such complexities in the location algorithms, allowing more accurate interpretation of the microseismic activity. A Northparkes mine case study applies this advanced approach to microseismic data interpretation.RÉSUMÉ Le suivi microsismique fournit des renseignements sur la localisation et l’étendue des fractures de la masse rocheuse induites par l’exploitation par blocs foudroyés; cela permet d’interpréter le profil de la chambre foudroyée et de valider les modèles prédictifs numériques. Les incertitudes quant à la localisation de la source peuvent conduire à des mésinterprétations des caractéristiques inférés du réseau de fractures. "Molten salt electrolysis is a proven technology for the extraction of metals -- all· the world's primary aluminum is produced in this manner. The unique properties of molten salts also make them excellent media in which to treat a variety of forms of waste. Of special note in this regard is electrolysis in molten oxides, a concept put forward by the author, initially as a ""clean technology"" for producing primary metal. However, in the context of waste treatment, electrolysis in molten oxides is a process offering the prospect of changing the-valence of dissolved heavy metals while making pure oxygen gas as the main by-product. Laboratory tests conducted at a temperature of 1550°C on chromate sludge dissolved in an melt composed of Al2O3, SiO2; CaO, and MgO have confirmed electrochemical production of oxygen on a carbon-free anode. IntroductionMolten salt electrolysis is the electrolytic decomposition of a compound dissolved in an ionic melt. The prime example of this process can be found in the production of aluminum. The compound, alumina (Al2O3)' derived from the mineral bauxite, is dissolved in an ionic melt comprising a multicomponent solution of cryolite (Na3AlF6)' aluminum fluoride (AlF3)' and calcium fluoride (CaF2,). The products of electrolysis are molten aluminum and carbon dioxide, the latter due to the attendant consumption of the carbon anode. Primary aluminum is produced in a reactor known as the Hall cell.' Alternatively, the compound undergoing electrolytic decomposition can be derived from waste. Processing in molten salts, with their capacity to dissolve materials to very high concentrations compared to those attainable in aqueous solutions, can be rather advantageous. High solubilities lead to high limiting current densities, and this, in tum, results in high productivities: For a primer on molten salt electrolysis and a review of the basic literature in the field of molten salts the reader is directed to an earlier publication of the author (1)."
