The Colorado Minerals Co. calcite properties in Archuleta and Hinsdale Counties, Colo., (fig. 1) were examined by Bureau of Mines engineers in 1943. The demand for optical calcite during the war prompted the examinations and resulting development programs on the Meadows and Seavy ranch properties near Pagosa Springs, Archuleta County. Development was begun on the Meadows property in November 1943 and continued to the Seavy ranch property. The work consisted of stripping the overburden from the calcite areas and excavating pits and trenches with a bulldozer. The pits and trenches exposing the most promising calcite veins were then deepened by hand, and one shaft was sunk to a depth of 30 feet. A total of 36 trenches and 9 pits were excavated by bulldozer and. hand methods (figs. 2, 3, and 4). The calcite deposits occur as veins and irregular bodies filling fractures in the Mancos shale of Cretaceous age. The fractures persist for considerable distances along the strike, although the calcite filling may not be continuous for more than a few feet. The widths of individual veins range from a few inches to several feet. The calcite crystals uncovered at the surface and in pits, trenches, and shafts were found to be unsuitable for optical purposes because of fracturing and color in the crystals.

"The amenability theory was developed by Alex Naudts and considers grouting operations as continuous permeability tests where Newtonian test fluid water, is replaced by a cementitious or solution grout. It utilizes hydraulic conductivity and grouting data to establish the amenability coefficient of a particular grout zone. The amenability coefficient reflects the quantity of apertures or voids accessible to the selected grout, divided by the number of apertures accessible to water, in the zone intersected by the grout hole. By calculating, in real time, the effectiveness of a particular grout at the start of a grouting operation, the most appropriate grout to match design criteria can be targeted. By incorporating the amenability theory in every grouting operation, schedule savings and an increase in productivity are typically achieved. Three short case studies illustrate different enhancements in productivity: At an underground mine during the construction of declines, a cement based suspension grouting program was highly ineffective and did not appear to affect the inflow into the mine workings. The amenability theory was utilized to evaluate the grouting program and based on this evaluation, changes to the grouting program were made which allowed the grouting to meet the project’s objectives. On another project, a pre-excavation grouting program implemented during shaft sinking operations utilized the amenability theory to select the most suitable grout for the program. Schedule constraints also influenced the selection of the grout. In the third case history presented, the amenability theory was used to select the grouting sequence of every individual grout hole for a grouting project in a highly heterogeneous soil formation. INTRODUCTION The amenability of a given soil, civil structure or rock formation for a particular grout formulation is a measure of the ability of that grout to permeate the pores, fissures and apertures water will flow through. The amenability coefficient of a particular grout for a specific zone equals the percentage of apertures, pores and fissures accessible by water that are also accessible by grout. Grouting should be viewed as a continuous permeability test, where the apparent in-situ hydraulic conductivity value for a particular grout zone is continuously evaluated, using grout instead of water as test fluid."

The issues of double refractory gold ores pressure oxidation were considered. It was demonstrated that along with chloride autoclave preg-robbing which has been studied there are other negative external and intra-autoclave processes resulting in gold losses. It was found that an ingress of even low concentrations of NaCN, ferrum(II) and ferrum(III) cyanide complexes, as well as thiocyanate compounds into the autoclave leads to decrease of gold recovery during further cyanidation in a "carbon in leach" process (CIL). Admixtures depressing recovery of gold can get into the autoclave together with water in the result of industrial accidents or due to peculiarities of recirculation of industrial water used for feed pulp preparation or with quench-water used for process temperature maintenance. In contrast to a chloride preg-robbing which occurs only at pressure oxidation of double refractory gold ores, cyanide preg-robbing starts in the autoclave feeding tank (so-called «upper» preg-robbing). Possible causes of cyanide autoclave preg-robbing and requirements to the quality of water supplied to autoclaving were discussed.

"Current mine control stations are either single-position systems with high engineering effort or all-in-a-box solutions with low integration possibilities of third-party devices. Above all, both approaches are cost-intensive and not feasible for small companies. This paper shall be an inspiration of how to enhance the productivity and monitoring of an existing mining system in a modular way by introducing a proven technique of the ongoing digital revolution: A Wi-Fi network based on the communication protocol OPC UA. The starter kit consists of a single-board computer, a WLAN access point and any electronic sensor. INTRODUCTION The majority of the European mining industry is run by small and medium deposits (Europe Geology, 2017). This is due to the fact that most ore mines in Europe are widely distributed within the continent, are generally small and additionally they are often steeply inclined. Such ore bodies are normally mined with underground mining methods and must be excavated with high selectivity because of their small thickness. That is why the economy of scales, higher efficiency through bigger machines, cannot be used in most deposits in Europe except for lignite mines. It is important to find an alternative possibility to improve the efficiency of European mines for making them competitive internationally. For cost optimization and profit maximization it is necessary to use the trends of industry 4.0 and to broadcast these into the mining industry to reach a technological advantage. The goals of the EU within the Horizon 2020 funded project are to shorten the actualisation of the mine and block model to hours, improve the communication with Through the Earth (TTE) via very- or ultra-low frequency for long-time monitoring of the abandoned workings, and develop a cost-effective mine control station for optimization of mining processes in Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) as well. This paper deals specifically with the new approach for data acquisition, transmission and visualisation of a mine. SCADA AND ERP IN MINING There are already many Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) programs on the market, but these are normally not developed for the mining industry. At the moment this leads to three options. • To hire a system integrator, who shall build a complete control station for one mine that requires a high amount of knowledge in programming and cannot be maintained by the mining company itself. • To buy different types of out-of-the-box systems, whereby every system can include some of the used technology. In this case a huge amount of project engineers and operators – at least one per system and shift- is required. • To buy every machine and program from one company including the service contracts."

The Environment process, invented by Prof. H.K.Womer and developed at the University of Wollongong, simultaneously treats ferruginous and organic wastes via bath smelting. Conceived in the late 1980's, the patented process was originally developed using steelworks dust to settle solids from sewage, producing a composite material suitable for smelt reduction. Work began on the process in 1990 with the Australian patent having a priority date of February 1990. Early research focussed on settling of solids from sewage, while pyrometallurgical investigations examined smelting in small induction furnaces. By 1992 smelting trials had been undertaken in pneumatic and electric arc furnaces, the process being successfully demonstrated up to on 8 tonne scale. The success of this particular trial, and other smaller trials, resulted in construction of a 100kg DC arc furnace which was commissioned in 1993. By 1994 the main project focus was on development of the smelting technology. Over 3 years of trials on the DC arc furnace have identified and clarified many of the pyrometallurgical reactions. optimum operating parameters, as well as demonstrating the versatility of the process for treating a wide range of wastes. Currently the Illawarra Technology Corporation (lTC), the commercial arm of the University of Wollongong, is pursuing commercialisation of the process.

Borehole breakout is a drilling induced phenomenon caused by overstress of rock around the borehole. Its depth usually aligns with the minimum horizontal principal stress direction. For this reason, it has been used to determine stress orientations and a series of researchers also argued its dimensions can be indicative of stress magnitudes. If the stress dependencies of breakout geometries are well understood, it is possible to estimate stress magnitudes based on these data. This paper investigates the influences of critical parameters on breakout dimensions, including absolute stress magnitudes, stress ratios and borehole diameter. Several experiments have been conducted on cubic (120 x 120 x 120 mm3) sandstone samples with pre-drilled holes (22 mm and 30 mm) under true tri-axial loading conditions using UNSW self-designed equipment. Experimental results confirm the increasing maximum horizontal principal stress magnitudes result in larger angular span and longer breakout depth at constant minimum horizontal and vertical principal stresses. There is also a considerable discrepancy observed between experimental results and the analytical model. Mine ventilation surveys were conducted by Technical Support engineers during June 1987 and September 1989 at the Dutch Creek Hine. The mine is located near Redstone, Colorado and is operated by Mid-Continent Resources, Inc. Following completion of the initial survey, several recommended improvements were incorporated into the ventilation system by mine personnel. The second survey permitted documentation of the effects of those changes on the ventilation system performance. This paper describes the processes involved in the implementation of the recommended changes. The substantial improvements in system efficiency and reduced operating costs are also described.

The mining industry responded to public concerns about use of cyanide by developing a voluntary certification to allow companies to demonstrate their commitment. The International Cyanide Code (Code) establishes standards for the manufacture, transportation and use of cyanide. Key concepts in closure planning to comply with the Code are to decommission all facilities related to cyanide operations and to provide a financial assurance mechanism for those activities. Code requirements may differ from state-specific regulations, but requirements are based on closure goals for protection of the human health and the environment. Only issues related to cyanide operations are required to be included in decommissioning demonstrations. For example, the disposal method of cyanide solution holding tanks and the cost must be included in the closure plan, but information regarding closure of roads is not required. Closure costs must be based on a third-party contractor as opposed to internal budgets. Compliance with the closure requirements of the Code allows companies to show their stockholders, lending institutions, and the public that their operations are environmentally responsible.

"Melt conditioned direct-chill (MC-DC) casting is a novel technology which combines vertical direct-chill (DC) casting with a high shear device directly immersed in the sump for in situ microstructural control. In this paper, the solidification mechanism of DC casting under varying conditions is discussed. The temperature profiles in the sump were measured under the steady state casting conditions by using sacrificing thermocouples. Detailed comparisons of the derived thermal condition are made. The individual role of grain refiner additions, natural thermosolutal convection and forced convection in the sump and the interplay of these factors in determining the solidification structures of DC cast billets are discussed. The MC-DC casting technology can be used to control microstructural constituents and casting defects in DC cast billets/ingots by in situ manipulating of the thermal and fluid flow conditions.INTRODUCTION Direct-chill (DC) casting of aluminium, has been the essential commercial process for producing feedstock suitable for subsequent processing, such as extrusion, rolling or forging. Fine and equiaxed grain structures in the as-cast billets/ingots are required to enable a fine and uniform distribution of second phase particles and microporosity. This leads to higher productivity, more cost-effective homogenisation and more efficient downstream thermomechanical processing. The addition of chemical inoculants has been the standard industrial operation prior to casting for grain refinement of Al alloys. However, it has been established that less than 1% of the grain refiner particles added actually act as heterogeneous nuclei to refine the grain structures, showing a very low grain refining efficiency (Greer, Bunn, Tronche, Evans, & Bristow, 2000). Moreover, the remaining particles from the grain refiner addition in the final casting may cause surface defects during downstream processing. A major issue of the metallurgical quality of large sized ingots/billets is the non-uniformity of microstructures even with chemical grain refiner additions. This is due to the fact that the grain structure formed in the different zones of the billet depends on the local chemical composition and local cooling rate. The local cooling rate can vary from 0.4~1 K/s at the centre of the billet to around 10–20 K/s at its surface zone (Nadella, Eskin, Du, & Katgerman, 2008). The large thermal gradient along radial direction between billet surface and interior of the melt during conventional DC casting induces thermal stress and cold cracking even with grain refiner addition. Therefore the control of casting defects, such as macrosegregation, porosity, cold/hot cracking and distortion of the billets/slabs, etc., is still challenging in industry, causing high scrap rate of DC cast ingots/billets even with grain refiner addition."

The reduction of iron ores by solid carbon, when both are agglomerated together in the form of pellets, has important kinetic advantages. Although several studies have been performed on the subject, some points on the controlling mechanisms need clarification. There is a big scatter in the values of the apparent activation energy reported in the literature, and this may be due to factors like heat transfer, flow of gases in the reduction system, pellet size and composition. This work is concerned with the effect of several parameters on the reaction rate. The parameters studied were temperature (in the range 1173 K to 1423 K), carbon type (coke or charcoal), pellet size, gas flow rate, catalyst action of the produced metallic iron and added sodium carbonate. It has been shown that the values of the apparent activation energy can change according to the reduction conditions employed, and hence any modeling effort will have to take account of these parameters. "Many deposits have a geological model developed early in the project stages, which is not always reviewed or modified as the project matures and production commences. Conversely, ongoing pressures, due to a combination of declining head grades, a push for increased revenue and a multitude of other reasons, leads to processing plant modifications, with the primary aim being to increase production. Often, the ore deposit knowledge is not sustained or developed during the operational stages to the level carried out during the prefeasibility and feasibility study phases. This results in the variability within the deposit being poorly understood and a lack of data and knowledge being available to support (and ideally optimise) operations particularly in an environment where the flow sheet has changed and ore feed requirements are complex.INTRODUCTION This paper presents a case study of ore deposit knowledge development and corresponding process plant operating strategy at the Ladolam Gold Deposit, commonly referred to as the Lihir gold deposit in Papua New Guinea. The gold deposit is located in a tropical equatorial climate on the east side of Lihir Island in the New Ireland Province of Papua New Guinea. Gold mineralisation was discovered in 1982, and was followed by a major exploration campaign by a joint venture between Kennecott (Rio Tinto) and Nuigini Mining Limited. The first drillhole was drilled in 1983, and after an extensive period of drilling consisting of 343 holes for 83,500 m, the final Feasibility Study was completed in 1992. The feasibility study was based on a Reserve base of 37.9 Moz in refractory sulphide ore, with gold extraction proposed to occur via whole ore pressure oxidation due to the refractory nature of the mineralisation. The Lihir Special Mining Lease (SML) was granted in 1995 to a new PNG company – Lihir Gold Limited, and Rio Tinto established Lihir Management Company to develop and operate the mine on behalf of LGL. Mining and processing of the deposit commenced in 1997. Newcrest Mining Limited purchased Lihir Gold Limited in August 2010, and subsequently completed a major plant upgrade including the installation of additional grinding, autoclave and carbon-in-leach capacity. Post commissioning of the upgrade, Newcrest has continued to increase throughput and production. A reinvigorated ore body knowledge development program has significantly assisted this process in identifying operating strategies for the process plant and delivering recovery improvement projects to address declining head grade and recovery due to increased stockpile feed and flotation circuit use."

With new lightweight designs, spirals have become standard equipment in coal preparation plants worldwide. To their credit, spirals typically show very low coal losses to the refuse stream under most operating conditions. However, spirals do tend to separate at cut points in excess of 1.80 S.G. Attempts to obtain lower cut points have typically resulted in coal losses to middlings. Middlings retreatment with secondary spirals is therefore becoming common place. Other forms of retreatment with water-only cyclones, hydrosizers, and recirculation have been attempted with some success. This paper reports on a novel (Patent Applied For) approach to retreating spiral middlings m a heavy-media-cyclone circuit.

Evaluation of raw materials for mineral wool is one phase of the Bureau of Mines broad program for the more effective utilization: of our mineral resources. The experimental work and test-evaluation results on several raw materials as useful components for the production of mineral wool are presented in this report. Samples from all sections of the United States, including copper slag from Tacoma, Wash., pebble phosphate slime from Florida, and granites from Massachusetts and Minnesota, have been blown into mineral wool successfully in the laboratory tests. Maximum conservation of the Nation's mineral and manpower resources requires maximum utility of those resources. Al though the domestic reserves of oil, gas, and coal are tremendous, judicious use of these fuels through the use of proper insulation will insure the highest thermal efficiency. The effectiveness of mineral wool as a heat-insulating material has assumed an increasingly important role in the national economy, and it has become a fuel saver in countless applications. The most immediate concern to many is the use of mineral wool in the home, which promotes uniform temperature and minimizes drafts by reducing heat transfer through the walls, ceiling, and floors. There are, however, many industrial and commercial uses that require large volumes of mineral wool each year.

"Although there have been great steps forward to integrate corrosion engineering into operations, there is still an underlying tendency for maintenance tasks to be performed in a reactive manner. This is especially true when strategies focus on lagging indicators such as visual inspections, RCA (root-cause analysis), and FMECA (failure mode, effects and criticality analysis). This trend to “reactive maintenance” can be avoided by utilizing more inspection and monitoring methods to identify leading indicators of failures. Prevention is generally less costly than repairs; moreover, when paired with appropriate monitoring techniques, intervention of corrosion protection can be more effectively timed and based on more accurate data. Hatch asset reliability studies show nearly 80% of defects are introduced through operations and maintenance. Therefore, proactive corrosion management can provide the necessary feedback to optimize operations and maintenance strategies preventing costly corrosion losses. Understanding corrosion risks gives a clear picture of the benefits of a proactive approach to asset performance. Monitoring techniques (Non-Destructive Testing, field testing, sampling, etc.) by nature are a more effective means of improving maintenance efforts and preventing corrosion losses than other methods (RCA, FMECA). This paper will outline the importance of proactive corrosion management and demonstrate its benefits through industry examples.INTRODUCTION Over the past few decades, with the growth of technology and awareness of sustainable development many studies have shown the benefits of a proactive approach to maintenance strategies. The present sources and quantities are given, when in 1994 it is an equal co-product of copper in Africa and nickel elsewhere (Canada, Australia, Russia). Future trends in this scene are also examined. The final section deals with cobalts uses in superalloys, magnets, colours, electronics, chemicals, and examines trends in its markets. Supply and demand in co-product cobalt are shown, based on the latest production figures.

The minerals industry is under political and economic pressure to reduce its processing wastes and minimize their impact on the environment: Recycling is one of the means by which the minerals Industry can reduce the quantities of effluents and residues that are discharged to the environment. The wise use of available resources is not only an environmental necessity but also an economic benefit as natural mineral resources are depleted and/or become more complex. The purpose of this paper is to review the technical and regulatory issues that will help shape the future of minerals recycling over the next ten years. Research and development to address technical issues will be discussed with emphasis on the Bureau of Mines recycling research program.

The Duval Corporation porphyry copper deposits at Copper Canyon and Copper Basin, though widely separated, form an economic unit requiring integrated exploitation. Contrasts in mineralization, host rocks, and mode of occurrence present unique mining and milling problems. Mixed oxide-sulfide ore is treated in extensive dump leaching facilities in both areas. Complex copper-gold-silver ore is treated in a 4,000 tpd mill at Copper Canyon. In both areas, hypogene metallization occurs within large aureoles of metamorphism and hydrothermal alteration related to quartz monzonite intrusions of mid-Tertiary age. Supergene processes further altered the rocks and enriched the hypogene protore. At Copper Canyon, hypogene copper and iron sulfides with gold and silver occur in fractures, as partial replacement of favorable beds, and as disseminations in Paleozoic sedimentary rocks. The lower part of the Pennsylvanian Battle Formation was a particularly favorable host. Metallization occurs to a lesser extent in quartz monzonite. Metal zoning is well developed. The deposits at Copper Basin consist principally of supergene copper minerals in arenites of the Cambrian Harmony Formation. Oxidation of hypogene copper and iron sulfides in tactite zones has formed at least two commercial deposits; intersections of fractures with favorable beds exerted important ore controls.
