The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated 21 mines, prospects, and mineralized sites in and adjacent to a 38,713-acre portion of the 255,058-acre Kingston Range Wilderness Study Area in 1983. The study area is 35 miles north of Baker, CA in the Mojave Desert. Mineral deposits in and adjacent to the study area are in altered carbonate rocks intruded by diabase sills near monzonite porphyry contacts. Monzonite porphyry forms the core of the Kingston Range and underlies about 70 percent of the study area. Sedimentary carbonate rocks are exposed in bands on the north and east boundaries and as isolated roof pendants in the southeastern portion of the study area.

"Automation offers the mining industry great potential for improvements in productivity and safety. However, the experience of introducing automation in other industries has been that the full potential of new technology is not always realised. Designers are surprised, for example, to find that automation does not eliminate human errors. Unwanted and unexpected consequences also arise if the introduction of automation fails to consider how people will adapt to the new technology. A focus on the technical aspects of automation is necessary but not sufficient for success. The potential for improvements in productivity and safety promised by automation will only be achieved if the joint cognitive system that emerges from the combination of humans and automation is designed to perform the functions required for system success. This case study describes the human factors issues associated with the introduction of automation generally, and describes a case study of the successful implementation of loader automation at Northparkes mine.Information obtained through a site visit and interviews with operators, safety staff and the project manager revealed the following strategies for successful design and implementation of the automation system: involve the people who will be impacted encourage constant communication between operators and designers provide operators with essential information avoid providing non-essential information provide the operators with flexibility empower operators to take action take advantage of the new possibilities automation provides.CITATION:Burgess-Limerick, R, Horberry, T, Steiner, L and Cronin, J, 2017. Investigation and uptake of filtered tailings continues to grow throughout the globe. This is driven by a wide range of site-specific considerations, which include such factors as tailings characteristics (e.g., amenability to filtration), production rates, climate, water availability, cost drivers, environmental requirements, and social factors. Despite the aforementioned technological growth, the currently available filtration technology is not able to meet the needs of many operations and projects that would otherwise adopt the technology. Experience with large-scale industrial filtration shows that vacuum belt filter systems meet the needs of many modern users, exceptions being the inability to effectively dewater tailings at altitude and/or with a fine particle size distribution: a potential fatal flaw. This paper presents a case study on the utilization of the patented Viper Filtration technology on gold tailings to overcome this challenge and shares the resultant full-scale plant design, highlighting the features designed to overcome cost and scalability deterrents. This technology is a novel mechanical process which complements the vacuum pressure in dewatering the filter cake as it travels along the belt filter. This project commenced with a pilot testing program, which successfully met the objective to rigorously test, measure and record any performance improvements achieved when engaging the Viper technology. Of the two tailings products tested, gross improvements of 4.2%w/w and 5.7%w/w were achieved when compared to the conventional vacuum belt filter operation. This pilot testing facilitated measurement of operating and design data, which forms the basis of the full-scale system design and resultant equipment supply of three vibration roller assemblies for retro-fitting on the existing vacuum belt filter.

Based on these investigations, general conclusions and some recommendations are presented.

Surface complexation using a diffuse layer model were constructed for arsenic (As(V)), zinc (Zn(II)) and silicate (Si(IV)) for aluminum hydroxide in the co-precipitation process. From experimental investigations using isotherms, zeta potential measurement and XRD analysis, it was confirmed that co-precipitation involved not only surface complexation but also surface precipitation. However, surface complexation was major mechanism for As(V), Zn(II) and Si(IV) removal under the target removal level of the Japanese effluent standard. In surface complexation modeling, exchange capacity of aluminum hydroxide was determined from specific surface area obtained from experimental measurement and site density obtained from reference. Surface complexation coefficients were determined by fitting the removal property and sorption isotherm obtained from co-precipitation experiments. These parameters were in agreement with the numerical parameters found by Karamalidis and Dzombak (2010) who reported a database of adsorption equilibrium constants for gibbsite. The surface complexation models constructed in this study were applied to neutralization process of an actual AMD treatment. Our model could successfully represent the pH edges for As(V), Zn(II) and Si(IV) in the neutralization of AMD.

The past few years has seen a concerted effort to improve the recovery of gold along with its co-product copper from the æhigh-gradeÆ Ridgeway concentrator at Newcrest Mining LtdÆs Cadia Valley Operations. A number of initiatives were identified and implemented, culminating in a sustained improvement in recovery of approximately three to four per cent for both metals. The key projects that contributed to this improvement included the installation of a 355 kW Metso stirred media detritor (SMD) to create a regrind circuit, installation of froth crowders on the scavenger circuit, installation of a Falcon SB2500SE gravity concentrator as part of the regrind circuit to improve gold recovered to bullion on-site and the optimisation of the grinding circuit to reduce the 80 per cent passing size (P80) of the primary grind from 160 to 121 ¦m for the same throughput via process control, cyclone and ball charge optimisation. This paper will focus on the supporting test work, where applicable, that was used as the design basis for the project, but more importantly the plant data before and after the changes to clearly identify the improvements to plant recovery.

The aim of this work is to investigate the control of microstructure evolution through variation of particular deformation parameters in the two-phase (intercritical) region. Niobium-microalloyed and low-carbon steels were investigated. A detailed examination of the factors affecting the ferrite microstructures of tested steels indicated that there were distinct advantages of finishing at temperatures in the austenite-ferrite region. The various results of deformation in the two-phase region are presented. Consequently, the influence of the most important process parameters on the microstructure evolution and mechanical response of the material is determined. The prime objective of the realized research work is the determination of relationship between the history of deformation and final product quality i.e. texture and mechanical properties. To reach the objective, the constitutive equations are proposed for modeling the effects of the hot-deformation process occurring in the austenite and austenite-ferrite region of low carbon and microalloyed steels on the mechanical properties of the resulting product. These models link advanced, finite element approaches simulating metal flow and heat transfer during hot-plastic deformation with constitutive equations describing microstructural processes and mechanical properties.

After decades of turmoil, Rwanda launched its Vision 2020 in 2000 aimed at reconstructing government and addressing poverty. Implementation focused on the agricultural sector, infrastructure and education. Later economic development and poverty reduction strategies recognised that expansion of tantalum, tin and tungsten mining could potentially diversify Rwanda’s economy and improve the balance of trade. In 2005, comprehensive environmental legislation requiring environmental impact assessment for all new mines was introduced. Since 2006, government-operated mines have been privatised and illegal artisanal miners encouraged to form cooperatives. The government passed a new Mining and Quarry Exploitation Law in 2008 and approved a new Mining Policy in 2010. This policy was influenced by the Africa Mining Vision (AMV), which the African Union approved in 2009 to ensure African countries obtain reasonable benefits from exploitation of their mineral wealth. The Rwandan mining industry has grown significantly over the last five years and the second economic development and poverty reduction strategy, released in September 2013 forecasts a further three-fold increase in production in the next five years. The strategy prioritises the mining industry and proposes new legislation, better information, greater transparency, encouragement to investment and use of best environmental and technical practices. It also proposes that Rwanda develop a ‘green’ mining sector featuring a ‘model’ mine that is fully funded through green investment and incorporates renewable energy systems, water treatment systems, forestry schemes and local training. Many international development partners have contributed to the current legislative framework and are monitoring environmental and social performance of mining in Rwanda. Local communities have generally benefited from mining and the new mines show improved environmental performance. The major challenges are dealing with the legacy of past haphazard mining practices and establishing linkages between the mines and local industries to create broader economic development.CITATION:Wilson, I H, 2014. The production of oxygen on the Moon utilizing indigenous materials is paramount to a successful lunar colonization. And several processes have been put forth to accomplish this. The LLOX generation schemes which have received the most study to date are those involving?: 1) the reduction of ilmenite (FeTi03) by H2, C, CO, CH4, CO-CI2, & Cl2 plasma, 2) magma electrolysis, both unadulterated and fluoride-fluxed, and 3) several others, including carbo-chlorination, HF acid leaching, fluorine extraction, magma oxidation, and vapor pyrolysis. The H2 reductions of ilmenite and magma electrolysis processes have received the most study to date. They are both feasible schemes with various pros and cons, including their feedstock requirements. However, all processes should be addressed at least at the onset of our considerations. There is an obvious need for considerably more experimentation and study. Some of these requisite studies are in progress, and this paper reviews several of the most studied and feasible processes for winning oxygen from lunar materials.

The mining of coal in Alaska receives special treatment in the Surface Mining and Reclamation Act passed by the U.S. Congress in 1977 (PL95-87). Section 708 of the Act required that the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) perform a study of "Surface Coal Mining Conditions in the State of Alaska, In Order to Determine Which, If Any, of the Provisions of the Act Should be Modified with respect to Surface Coal Mining Operations in Alaska'. The special committee on Alaskan Coal Mining and Reclamation of NAS completed their study in 1980 and prepared their report (NAS, 1980). At this time, the Secretary of the Interior and the Congress have taken no special action with regard to either special regulations geared specifically to Alaska or to submitting special draft legislation to the Congress requesting amendment of PL95-87. The Alaska Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has drafted legislation which was submitted to and passed by the 1982 session of the State Legislature. The State regulatory agency has also drafted the requisite regulations necessitated by the amendments to the State's Basic Coal Mining Act. It is expected that by mid 1983 DNR will have applied for "primacy" to the office of Surface Mining, U.S. Department of the Interior (OSM). They will be submitting the amended State Law, the revised State Regulations and an operational plan as called for by OSM regulations. The presumption is that primacy will be granted to the State of Alaska under PL95-87. The Usibelli Coal Mine continues to be the only operational commercial mine for coal in the State of Alaska. It produced 7.26 x 10 kg (8 x 10 " T) of coal during 1981. The current mine was started in 1920 by Captain Lathrop, an early developer and pioneer in Alaska. It was continued by Emil Usibelli and was taken over after the death of E. Usibelli (in the 1964 earthquake) by his son Joseph Usibelli who is the current President of, the firm3 Their latest improvement is a 27.5 m (36 yd. )Bucyrus-Erie Dragline which handles most of the overburden removal. The coal is removed by a loader-truck combination. They are currently starting up the use of a unit train loading facility which handles forty cars every two hours. This loading system was a development necessitated by the Sun Eel Export contract. The Alaskan Railroad was a major cooperator in the development of the first unit train loading facility in Alaska.

Thermodynamic modeling and experimental study on impurity capacities and their distribution between mattes or metal and slags in smelting, converting and refining of non-ferrous metals was discussed. A brief review on the recent developments in copper smelting and converting is presented. The analysis showed that, copper smelting capacity increased by a factor of 10 since 60's, smelting rate increased by a factor of more than 5 and process fuel equivalent decreased by a factor of 2. A thermodynamic model for prediction of impurities capacities in slags and their distribution in mattes and slags was developed. The impurities capacities (i.e. sulfur and arsenic) of slags were calculated a priori with no adjustable parameters using the Reddy-Blander model. The capacities predictions were made in a wide range of matte and slag compositions, Pso, and temperatures in conditions pertaining to copper and lead industrial slags. The calculated results for sulfide and arsenate capacities are in good agreement with the available experimental and industrial copper and lead industrial slags data. The sulfide and arsenate capacities in copper slags (fayalite, ferrite and olivine) and lead slags are reviewed. The application of RB model predicted ratios of 02 and S2 partial pressures in industrial copper smelting processes are discussed. Application of this model for the prediction of Sb, Bi and other impurity capacities and their distribution ratios in mattes or metal and slags, in industrial smelting and refining processes is discussed.

"The CompanyCardinal River Coals is jointly owned by Luscar Ltd. and the Consolidated Coal Company of Canada (Consol). The Luscar mine is operated by Luscar Ltd. and is located 40 km south of Hinton near Cadomin, Alberta (Fig. 1). The plant sits on the old townsite of Luscar, Alberta, which was founded in order to develop the coal in 1912 (Fig. 2). Initially, the coal was mined by Luscar Ltd. for heating and steam generation and used quite heavily by the railways for their steam locomotives. In 1955, the mine was decommissioned as the demand for coal for tl1ese purposes had dropped off. In 1969, the mine was re-established by Cardinal River to provide metallurgical coking coal for its customers in Japan. The coal is mined from the 13m thick Jewel Seam by open pit methods at a 10 to 1 stripping ratio. The run-of-mine coal is then cleaned to meet customer demands.The PlantThe clean coal preparation facilities at Cardinal River were extended in 1980 in order to increase the feed rate from 450 t/h to 800 t/h. The extension is a separate plant which can be operated on its own or in parallel with the old plant. In addition, modifications have been made to the fine coal circuit (hydrocyclones added), the coarse refuse circuit, (refuse bucks replaced by a refuse conveyor which backfills a pit), and the fine refuse circuit (solid bowl refuse centrifuges, refuse classifying cyclones, and hydra-rake thickener no longer utilized) since the plant was built in 1969. The plant production of 3 M t per year with a yield of 78% is achieved by first screening and breaking the run-of-mine material to a top size of 1 ½ in. The feed is then slurried, sized, and processed in three different washing circuits. The washed coal is mechanically dewatered, thermally dried, and then stored in a 14 500 t capacity silo or on a 300 000 t stockpile. The fine refuse is thickened and pumped to the same pit to which the coarse refuse is being conveyed"

A practical method has been developed and field tested which provides an estimate of the bearing capacity of mine roof and floor. The relationship between penetration of the strata and imposed loads is determined by in situ tests. Information of this type is needed to determine the maximum allowable pressure that may be applied by self-advancing supports on roof and floor of a longwall face without causing a punching type of failure.

"This paper is focused on blasting activities undertaken as part of the Pacific Highway Upgrade – Tintenbar to Ewingsdale – project (T2E). This is a ‘priority 1’ Pacific Highway road construction project in New South Wales (NSW), to be completed by mid-2015 (weather permitting). T2E will provide approximately 17 km of dual carriageway road starting at the northern end of the Ballina bypass and extending to the Ewingsdale interchange, and will complete the existing dual carriageway road between Ballina and the NSW/Queensland border.Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) (formerly the Roads and Traffic Authority) is delivering the project on behalf of the NSW state and federal governments. In October 2011, RMS awarded a contract to Baulderstone Pty Ltd (now Lend Lease Engineering Pty Ltd – Lend Lease) to design and construct T2E. One of the key elements in this project is the St Helena Tunnel.In order to avoid the steep grades of St Helena Hill, eliminate a well-known accident black spot and maintain the aesthetics of the Byron hinterland escarpment, RMS and Lend Lease prepared designs to construct a 434 m long dual carriageway tunnel, 46 m below the ridge line of St Helena Hill. Lend Lease elected, where geotechnical conditions permitted, to use drill and blast methods to excavate the full tunnel profile, instead of traditional mechanical excavation techniques.Since all blasting locations (both inside and outside the tunnel) were in close proximity to nearby residents, the NSW Department of Planning and Infrastructure imposed strict air blast overpressure (airblast), ground vibration (vibration) limits and limited working hours. Both RMS and Lend Lease recognised that these restrictions meant that nearby residents may be exposed to blasting activities for longer than was necessary. As a result, after close consultation and agreement with the nearby residents, RMS applied successfully to the NSW Department of Planning to increase the airblast and vibration limits, as well as the working hours.Working under these new conditions, Lend Lease employed a range of best practice drill and blast technologies provided by both Orica Australia Pty Ltd and Atlas Copco Mining and Rock Excavation to improve the safety and efficiency of blasting activities and to minimise the potential negative impacts of the blasting works on affected residents. These technologies included: the use of a continuous environmental monitoring system to record the results of the blast events and provide quick and easy reporting to key stakeholders to address RMS specification requirements electronic detonators to enable accurate hole detonation timing for vibration compliance and to give project engineers the flexibility and precision to alter each design to suit the geological profile of each face the use of two software programs and advanced drill rigs to enable the efficient design of blasts, electronic transfer of designs to the drill rigs, as well as in-hole monitoring and recording of drilling performance the use of a specialised bulk emulsion system to deliver fully coupled bulk explosives into face blastholes to maximise fragmentation, and decoupled bulk explosives into perimeter blastholes, to reduce overbreak and deliver a cleaner profile.By taking a progressive approach towards the environmental restrictions and the work hours imposed, as well as utilising best practice blasting techniques, RMS and Lend Lease were able to blast with confidence and achieve their production deadlines and reduce the total cost of the project.Most importantly, RMS and Lend Lease were able to meet their environmental obligations and work constructively with the nearby residents to ensure that the blasting was undertaken as safely and efficiently as possible without delay or negative impact.CITATION:Dowling, M, Domotor, R and Miller, D, 2014. Gold miners have been underperforming the price of gold for a number of years. So why has the æmarketÆ undervalued our gold miners relative to what they have been mining? The low valuation ascribed to gold mining companies is largely attributable to their profit performance. In the period since 2006 the price of gold in A$ has risen about $900/oz, but the real cash margin (operating cash costs + cost of finding and/or acquiring deposits + the cost of bringing them into production) has only risen about A$100. Rising operating costs are a major part of this reduction in real margin. Energy and labour costs have risen more than the inflation rates across a number of countries as have taxes, royalties, etc. There are however, more significant contributors to the rising cost base. Firstly, in 2006 the average gold grade was 2.0 g/t; today it is 1.3 g/t. Secondly, strip ratios (for surface mines) have increased by 19 per cent during this time. Open cut mining equipment unit output across the world has dropped by 26 per cent during 2006 - 2012. Finally, costs have risen by 55 per cent during this time period. Consequently, there is now 3.8 times more mining cost required to produce an ounce of gold from surface mines compared with 2006. The decline in gold grade looks to be a permanent trend as does increasing strip ratio if output is to be maintained. Costs will continue to rise although cost control will be necessary. Reversing the decline in equipment performance and closing the gap between median and best practice provides the hope for a sustainable reversal of cost increases. The current gap between best practice and median performance has grown to 112 per cent for mining trucks, 168 per cent for excavators and 169 per cent for front end loaders. Closing this gap is the potential for a more profitable future. For most gold mining companies improving mining efficiency is not an option; it is an imperative.CITATION:Lumley, G, 2013. "The Central Subway is Phase 2 of the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency’s (SFMTA) Third Street Light Rail project and will extend the existing Phase 1 initial operating segment from its current connection to the Embarcadero line at Fourth and King streets along Fourth Street to Market Street, under the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) and Muni Metro tunnels and then north beneath Stockton Street to Chinatown (Fig. 1).Total new track to be constructed as part of the Phase 2 work consists of approximately 734 m (2,410 ft) of surface track and 2,636 m (8,650 ft) of tunnels. The tunnels were constructed as twin, singletrack bores by two tunnel boring machines (TBMs) (Johnson, 2014) moving north from the southern end of the launch box under the I 80 freeway between Bryant and Harrison streets. North of Chinatown Station the TBMs continued another approximately 683 m (2,240 ft) to a retrieval shaft near Columbus Ave. at Washington Square. The project also includes five cross passages to connect the two tunnels, and three underground stations (the Yerba Buena/ Moscone Station, Union Square/Market Street Station and Chinatown Station.)Excavation of the twin tunnels was performed with two TBMs, with both TBMs driving northward from the launch box. TBM excavation was performed such that the location of the machines was staggered to separate the active excavation faces by a minimum of 91 m (300 ft) between headings. This minimum separation was maintained until the first TBM arrived at the retrieval shaft plug, at which time the separation requirement was relaxed.Excavation began with the “southbound” (SB) tunnel which will ultimately accommodate the southbound TBM light rail trains followed by the second TBM in the “northbound” (NB) tunnel. With the completion of the drives in June 2014, cross passage excavation then began and was completed in April 2015. Overall, construction of the Central Subway tunnels was a success considering the nature and complexity of the project. Additional details of the completion of the Central Subway tunnels are presented in another paper from the RETC 2015 conference (Leong et al., 2015)."

"Abstract- The Laochang mine, located in the Sanjiang area of southwestern Yunnan Province of China, is a volcanogenic massive Pb-Zn-Cu sulfide deposit. It is hosted by a pyroclastic sequence of Barly Carboniferous age, namely the lower member of the Yiliu Group, which was intruded by syenite and rhyolite porphyry . The volcanic suite is basaltic or basaltic-andesitic in composition, has alkaline affinities, and is associated with the initial rifting along the margin of the Baoshan-Shanstate continental rnicroplate (Yang, 1989). The ores are typically Pb>Zn>Cu in composition, averaging 3.820Jo Pb, 3.51% Zn, from 0.01% to 1.85% Cu (0.107% av.), a high average content of Ag (113 g/t) and recoverable amounts of Au, Tl, Gd, Ga, Ge, In. A massive sulflde zone, in which lenticular and stratiform orebodies are localized in a sulflde-carbonate-silica shale unit or sulfldic tufflte horizon that usually overlies coarse-grained pyroclastic rocks, is underlain by a stringer sulflde zone developed in a subvolcanic intrusion or volcanic sequence. The sulfide mineral assemblages, from the top to the bottom of the deposit, are: realgar + orpiment - galena + sphalerite + pyrite- chalcopyrite + pyrite + pyrrhotite + arsenopyrite. Oxide and sulfate minerais occur rarely in the massive ores. The massive ores are generally fine-grained and banded, but coarse-grained ore, colloform and framboidal texture, and growth-zoned pyrite and sphalerite are common. Sedimentary features such as graded bedding, brecciated and deformed ore clasts, and chaotically emplaced blocks, are well preserved, indicating that the massive orebodies have undergone slumping and dis­ placement. Alteration is weak in the hanging-wall rocks, but strong in the stringer zone. Two dis­ tinctive alteration zones have been identified: the upper zone, characterized by an assemblage of quartz, carbonates, chlorite, albite, zeolite and sericite, and the lower zone containing diopside, trema­ lite, actinolite, gamet, clinozoisite, and epidote.The general features of the Laochang deposit are in accord with the descriptive mode! of VMS deposits (Lydon, 1984). However, it falls into neither the Zn-Cu group nor the Zn-Pb-Cu group chemically (Franklin et al., 1981). The depositional setting of the Laochang deposit is quite different from Cyprus or Besshi-type massive sulfide deposits. Laochang is hosted by alkaline lavas that were erupted in a submarine continental rift. Although some features of the Laochang deposit are similar to those of Kuroko-type deposits, there are remarkable differences in the alteration mineral assemblage, the proportion of ore-forming elements (lead enriched) and the amounts of oxides and sulfates. These suggest corresponding differences in ore fluid composition and the associated ore-forming environment. Thus, the authors suggest that the Laochang deposit may be a distinct type of VMS deposit."

WESTERN CAN ADA'S coal industry has experienced a serious set-back since 1949, following a pattern well known to its counterpart in the United States. The loss in coal markets in Western Canada has been particularly severe as the discovery of large reserves of oil and natural gas and the subsequent construction of re-fineries and pipelines roughly coincided with the dieselization of both main railways. While the coal industry will have to face a further decline in markets of long standing, others with a large growth potential can be se-cured if present marketing methods are changed where needed and if fundamental and applied research programmes are actively pursued. The energy and chemical potential of Western Canada's coals will eventually find their place in the ever-growing needs of industry and electric power producers. Electric power generation would appear to offer the largest and most immediate market for coal. If the coal industry is to serve this market adequately and gain as much of it as possible, coal operators ? must have a good knowledge of certain characteristics -of the electric utility industry and its fuel requirements. This paper is prepared primarily to set out some of these characteristics, but also discusses other probable markets for coal.
