In 1989 and 1990, the Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral resource investigation of the 122,000-acre Trinities study area, located in the Trinity Mountains of south-central Idaho. No identified mineral resources were delineated during this study. There are 58 lode mining claims within the area. Five localities contained elevated metal concentrations which may indicate precious metal mineralization at four localities and molybdenum-precious metal mineralization at another. Four of the five localities appear to form a northwest trend through the center of the study area. Twenty-eight individual sites contain anomalous concentrations of gold, silver, bismuth, molybdenum, and beryllium.

Muldenhiütten Recycling und Umwelttechnik GmbH is a lead smelter with a very long tradition. The first reference to the existence of smelters on this site is given by a document of inheritance dated 1318. Originally run as a primary lead smelter, which was supplied with ores from the Freiberg mining district and from overseas, it was required to change it over to secondary raw materials due the abandonment of mining in the Freiberg area in 1968. Today, Muldenhüitten Recycling und Umwelttechnik GmbH has two production lines; lead production from secondary lead and waste incineration, which are closely connected and gain advantage from each other. Installations, improved technologies, and the highly skilled personnel have contributed to satisfy all demands for a production concerning quality and environment.

Surface mining activities disturb large tracts of land resulting in the potential for greatly increased downstream sediment loads. The Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 places increased emphasis on the protection of the environment from the adverse effects of surface mining operations. Surface mining activities must be planned to minimize disturbance to the hydrologic balance, erosion and sediment contributions to receiving streams. Sediment ponds must provide a sediment storage volume equal to the accumulated sediment volume from the drainage area as determined by the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) or other empirical methods established by the regulatory authority. It has thus become extremely important for the mining industry to secure more accurate estimates of potential erosion losses and sediment yield. Accurate estimates of sediment yield are required for the planning, design and successful operation of sediment control systems such as detention ponds and other alternative control structures and for evaluating the effectiveness of land management practices. The principal soil loss prediction procedure available for use is the LISLE. The USLE procedure is inadequate for use in predicting soil loss from surface mine regions for a number of reasons. These include: 1. The USLE was developed to estimate average average annual loss from agricultural soils. It cannot predict accurately soil loss for specific storm events. In surface mine regions a major portion of the soil loss occurs during the initial six months to one year of active mining. Accurate estimates of soil loss over short periods are thus required for the design of control structures. 2. The application of remote sensing for environmental measurements is already being utilized. Aircraft mounted imaging spectroscopy has been utilized to evaluate areas of historical mining operations as well as active mine sites. To the extent that remote sensing can provide more sensitive, cost effective, and timely monitoring potential, the technology is of interest to the industry. Questions remain about the application and validation of the data and the availability of the technology in the private sector. This presentation will discuss some of the potential uses, benefits, and concerns related to remote sensing and efforts to monitor the technology's development.

The MANpower SUPport Program (MANSUPP), a part of the Mine Management Support System (MMSS), allows an underground coal mine site user to determine manpower requirements for production support work by considering ongoing operations and current mine conditions. The objective of MANSUPP is to plan a detailed manpower structure for a mine by incorporating a production schedule, condition-modified work standards and management preferences to predict required manhours for various activities, for example, belt moves. The program is written in Quattro Pro version 3.0 (Lotus 1-2-3 compatible) utilizing the command language, macro and formula capabilities.

"Tunnels are built with a design life expectancy of over 100 years. One key component of such a design is the waterproofing system, which must reliably fulfil its function during the whole service lifetime of the tunnel structure. This paper deals with the determination of test criteria for the durability assessment of geosynthetic products in tunnel sealing systems. Hereby the understanding of the individual aging processes is crucial along with the long-term experience with these materials to ensure the transfer of the laboratory results and performance to site practice (test calibration) and vice versa. To verify the results of the new test procedure the material properties of geosynthetic products samples removed from older tunnels are investigated. Based on the presented results of the still ongoing research programs some preliminary conclusion regarding the updating of regulations for tunnel sealing systems are given. INTRODUCTION Watertightness is directly related to the durability and serviceability of the concrete lining. Therefore, modern traffic tunnels and shafts (Figure 1) are generally protected against mountain/ground water and water penetrating through rock fissures by a sealing system, for example with a loose-laid polymeric sheet membrane. Hereby the waterproofing sealing systems must be reliably fulfilling their function during the whole service life of the tunnel structure, regularly of more than 100 years. In consequence, the quality and lifetime performance of the waterproofing materials—beside the correct professional and careful installation in a tunnel infrastructure, is of great importance. The challenge for the industry, owners, operators and designers is ultimately the development of qualification testing and requirements (acceptance criteria) for products to ensure the design lifetime performance. Hereby the qualification procedure is seen as a routine integrated in standards, norms or guidelines, wherein test procedures should cover typical environments for the specific application fields. Polymeric synthetic raw materials are increasingly used in products with long service lifetimes (e.g. in injections, gaskets, waterbars, spray-applied and sheet waterproofing membranes). During service they are subjected to chemical (e.g. oxidation processes) and physical (e.g. changes in morphology) influences from the environment, which affect their mechanical properties—and they age. Hereby organic materials are more affected than inorganic materials. Also, polymers show strongly temperature-dependent properties compared with other construction materials. However, their long-term aging behavior is not given per se and has to be explored extensively by suitable tests, which simulate—under accelerated processes—real exposures and loads. Hereby the understanding of the individual aging processes is crucial along with the long-term experience with these materials to ensure the transfer of the laboratory results and performance to site practice (test calibration) and vice versa."

During fiscal year 1969, the Bureau of Mines was engaged in 66 projects to improve methods for producing and utilizing petroleum. Programs directed toward the continued conservation of this natural resource, including crude oil, natural gas, and oil shale, were carried out through research performed at four laboratories supervised and supported by administrative personnel of this Bureau of the Department of the Interior. Over 100 technical papers and reports were published by the Bureau or others based on this research, and numerous other reports were prepared for U.S. Government agencies, State agencies, and organizations of the petroleum and natural gas industry engaged in cooperative research programs with the Bureau.

The study involved two projects that will produce copper concentrate and may have their operations integrated. Transport by trucks, conveyor belt, and the equipment called RopeCon were evaluated as options for the ore transport between the sites. A rainforest stretch, that Vale S.A. demands to preserve, is situated between the projects. It was suggested to further review RopeCon because it presents minimal interactions with the environment. To design the preliminary system layout, a research was done on the rainforest cover height data, but the information found was scarce and imprecise. For preserving the local forest, the use of this data would conduct to the oversizing of RopeCon towers and, consequently, overestimation of its costs. For the acquisition of reliable information, a method was developed using local data acquired through airborne laser survey. The volume between the digital surface and terrain models was calculated to generate a surface representing the forest cover height. It was revealed, by plotting the points obtained from this surface, that 85% of the vegetation is below 25 m. This height is suggested to review the preliminary project with a more accurate design of the equipment towers, thus reducing its costs estimates. The method permits the precise location of the large trees, making easier to find a pathway, for linear-shaped facilities, that would minimize the creation of vegetation-free zones as a measure to protect equipments against falling trees and forest fires. A helicopter-mounted lake-sediment and lake-water survey was carried out over Grenville rooks in the Renfrew area (parts of Renfrew and Lanark counties) during four days of October, 1975. In the course of this survey. 1150 square kilometers were covered, with 246 lake-sediment and 276 lake -water samples collected from every body of water on which the helicopter could land. Sample sites, which averaged one per 4.6 square kilometers, included lakes, ponds, beaver ponds, swamps and marshes. Lake-sediment samples were taken using a G.S.C. sampler. Waters were collected directly into polyethylene bottles. At each sample site , surface and bottom-water pH, dissolved oxygen content, conductivity and temperature were measured using a Martel. Water Quality Analyzer. The lake sediments were air dried and then ball milled to pass a minus 80-mesh sieve. Lake sediments were analyzed for U by delayed neutron activation and for Mo, Cu, Zn, Pb, Fe, Mn, Ni and Co by atomic absorption techniques. The organic content of the sediments was determined by loss on ignition at 450 °C. Lake waters were acidified with nitric acid on the day of collection. The U content of the water s was determined by fluorometry; the Cu, Zn, Pb, Fe, Mn , Ni and Co contents of the waters were determined by solvent extraction - atomic absorption techniques. A close relationship was found between bodies of granitic, syenitic and pegmatitic bedrock and elevated U levels in the lake sediments. The Hurd Lake and White Lake granitic intrusive were encompassed by an annulus of higher U activity. Field inspection revealed that the U concentrations occur within a zone which may represent a contact metamorphic aureole. Within these complexes, anomalous concentrations of U appear to be associated with Mo. Information derived from the lake-water data reinforces the geochemical distributions outlined by the lake-sediment survey . This survey was carried out in order to develop optimum sampling and analytical procedures for geochemical reconnaissance of the Grenville Province that may be carried out under the auspices of the Uranium Reconnaissance Program.

Geotechnical solutions were developed for closure of two historic, remote underground mines in the deserts of southern California. Closure criteria included access closure, minimal site impact, and optimum use of native materials. The closure designs and construction activities incorporated techniques for protecting sensitive biota, particularly bats and desert tortoise. The types of mine openings that were closed include adits, declines, shafts, daylighted stopes, and dugout dwellings. The desert locations permitted implementation of cost-effective closure techniques that relied upon the use of native materials. The strategies and techniques developed for these desert closures are adaptable to other climates.

Acid-activated montmorillonite is used worldwide as a catalyst and as a sorbent for the enhancement and purification of petroleum products as well as vegetable and animal-based fats. The solid-acid character of the activated montmorillonite is imparted by the manufacturing process, giving it unique properties that are exploited in these industries. Several international companies and a multitude of local clay producers are focusing on improving the efficiency of their standard and specialized products. This paper will describe the use of acid-activated montmorillonite in traditional sorbent applications, as a solid acid catalyst, and other new uses.

"The structural design of mine headframes is challenging due to the significant differences in the geometry, rigidity, and behaviour of these structures compared to conventional buildings. The differences are related to the main purpose of these structures, which is not human occupancy, but rather the support of hoisting equipment. The main objective of this paper is to present the seismic elastic behaviour of headframe structures in comparison with conventional buildings, which is the base case for the definition of seismic loads. This paper highlights the impact of backlegs on the dynamic behaviour of mine headframes, more specifically the resulting torsional sensitivity. INTRODUCTION The design of industrial structures is often governed by industrial processes rather than by architectural constraints. In ground-mounted hoisting plants, the structural configuration of headframes must allow clearances around conveyances and ropes while resisting the lateral loads associated with the hoisting equipment. Typically, these structures use backlegs to withstand the lateral loads, which leads to highly irregular structures with unconventional dynamic behaviour. The codes and standards applicable to the structural design of mine headframes in Canada are often incomplete or not adapted to the reality of practising engineers. This situation creates confusion, and engineers must look at various guidelines and international standards to support the engineering calculations required for the design of these structures. The loads resulting from the support of hoisting equipment, such as ropes and conveyances, are usually simple to calculate and are determined based on the information from manufacturer and industry related guidelines. Moreover, the loads associated with snow accumulation and wind are calculated applying the same methodology used for conventional buildings, without any major issues. On the other hand, the seismic loads are often difficult to calculate based on the methodology from the National Building Code of Canada due to the significant differences in the dynamic behaviour of the structures. The resulting structures may be either over-designed or worse, under-designed. Hence, there is a lack of uniformity in engineers’ designs. The latest edition of CSA S16-14 “Design of steel structures” includes Annex M (Informative) “Seismic design of industrial steel structures” to help designers close the gap between the requirements of traditional regulations and actual engineering practice."

In January 1998 Sydney Water Corporation formed an Alliance with construction contractor Transfield, and engineering consultants Connell Wagner and Montgomery Watson, to design and construct the Northside Storage Tunnel. The project is part of WaterPlan 21, Sydney WaterÆs strategy for cleaning up the harbours, bays, rivers and beaches within its business area. WaterPlan 21 is an integral part of the NSW GovernmentÆs $3.1 billion Waterways Package which establishes targets and initiatives for sustainable wastewater management within NSW. The project is being delivered under an Alliance Agreement, which has a number of non-traditional features in terms of partnering, management principles and design and construct. Construction began in mid-1998 and is on target to meet the completion deadline for the Sydney 2000 Olympics.

The olfactory system (sense of smell) is crucial to the ability of fish to avoid predators, recognize kin, and synchronize reproduction (Baldwin et al. 2003). Copper (Cu) has been shown to impair olfaction in juvenile freshwater life stages of salmonids (including Pacific salmon and trout) in some laboratory experiments; and in the United States, public concerns have been expressed that current regulatory criteria for Cu in fresh water are not adequately protective of olfactory function in salmonids (e.g., OSU 2007; Pearson 2007). These concerns have largely been raised because some Cu concentrations that have caused olfactory impairment in salmonids in the laboratory are less than Cu concentrations that have been shown to reduce salmonid survival, growth, or reproduction (the effects endpoints that are typically considered in deriving ambient water quality criteria). However, two important and interrelated points that must be considered: (1) freshwater Cu criteria are "driven" by the sensitivities of several invertebrate species that are more sensitive than the olfactory impairment threshold in salmonids when (2) the influence of water chemistry on Cu bioavailability is properly considered in deriving Cu criteria. Bioavailability refers to the ability of various chemical forms of Cu to interact with receptors on the surface(s) of organisms and thus directly cause toxicity or uptake by the organisms. The toxicity of Cu and other metals to aquatic organisms is a function of water chemistry. For example, acute Cu toxicity in fresh water generally decreases as pH, water hardness (Ca2+ and Mg2+), alkalinity, and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations increase (Meyer et al. 2007). The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) has recommended hardness-based freshwater aquatic life criteria for Cu and other metals since the 1980s (e.g., USEPA 1985); and hardness-based metals criteria decrease (i.e., become more restrictive) as water hardness decreases. More recently, the USEPA has recommended freshwater aquatic life criteria for Cu based on the biotic ligand model (BLM; USEPA 2007), which accounts for the influence of multiple water chemistry parameters, including DOC, pH, alkalinity, Ca2+, Mg2+, and several other cations and anions. The BLM-based Cu criteria generally decrease as DOC concentration, pH, alkalinity, and water hardness decrease. Because DOC has a stronger influence on Cu bioavailability than water hardness, hardness-based and BLM-based Cu criteria can differ considerably. For example, in water that has low DOC and high hardness, the hardness-based Cu criterion would be relatively high (because it is driven by the high hardness) but the BLM-based Cu criterion would be relatively low (because it is driven by the low DOC). Thus, any evaluation of the protectiveness of Cu criteria against a given effect, such as olfactory impairment, must properly account for the chemistry of the exposure water. Meyer et al. (2013) compiled data on Cu-induced olfactory impairment and olfactory-induced behavioral effects from tests in which BLM parameters were measured. They demonstrated that the USEPA's BLM-based freshwater life criteria for Cu are protective against olfactory impairment, because it adequately accounts for water chemistry (whereas the USEPA's hardness-based Cu criteria are not consistently protective). Olfactory impairment by Cu is now receiving increased attention in Canada and Europe (e.g., Wall 2013; Stang 2013). Accordingly, in this paper we have expanded the analysis of Meyer et al. (2013) to consider copper guidelines from various other countries and whether these guidelines are protective against olfactory impairment.

As ore grades decline, ore deposits get harder and mineralogical complexity increases, metallurgical skills are more important than ever to ensure that today?s mining operations are operating efficiently and profitably. Yet specialist undergraduate degree programs have all but disappeared and metallurgical skills training for graduate engineers in the workspace if often haphazard. In response to this situation, specialists at the JK Centre in Queensland, Australia, have put together a professional development program designed to fast-track skills development for early career metallurgical professionals. The program, called ?MetSkill ® ?, is offered as a group training package for young metallurgists in the workplace. It is centred on a meaningful technical investigation negotiated between the JK Centre delivery team and the client company. As well as learning about project management and data collection and analysis, the participants study specialist topics such as comminution, flotation and mineralogy under the tutelage of senior research and consulting professionals. The technical investigation provides an opportunity for immediate practice of these new skills and JK Centre specialists are on hand to provide feedback and support throughout the program. The participants are employed across different operations in Australia and the Asia-Pacific, and although they occasionally come together for group training activities they are often separated by considerable distance. Specialist educational professionals from The University of Queensland have provided an innovative web platform to support collaboration and communication between all participants. This paper will describe the MetSkill ® program in detail, as well as providing a report on its initial roll-out to 2 groups of Australian graduate metallurgists in 2012

"The efficiency of the truck-shovel haulage system is significantly influenced by the truck fleet size. A discrete event simulation model with 3D animation has been developed to estimate the productivity of a truck-shovel network system, shovel efficiency, truck cycle time, truck utilisation and the optimal fleet size. The simulation model considers the dynamic variability of traffic conditions and also the truck as an individual entity. The Marvel Loch Operations (MLO) plant was treating ores from up to six MLO sources and in addition needed to blend externally sourced ores with its own ores. This presented a metallurgical accounting dilemma, which was subsequently addressed by the design, implementation and testing of an automatic sampling system. The MLO automatic sampler was well designed and has been the subject of previous internal and external reviews. The sampling action is fully automated and the unit is essentially self cleaning particularly when sampling primary ores. The purpose of this paper is to document the rationale behind the design, the specific details of the sampling station, its use for ore purchase purposes and an assessment of the sampling system to meet the needs of the operator.

Photogrammetric methods are advancing rapidly and show considerable promise as a ground control research tool. The ability to quickly capture three-dimensional geometry, especially changes in geometry, in underground and laboratory settings is a significant advance from point distance measurements. Photogrammetry is being applied in both of these settings as part of the NIOSH ground control research. This paper describes these applications and the equipment and software being employed. It also describes tests conducted to quantify the accuracy of these systems. Accuracy varied with system specifics and procedures. A factory-calibrated camera produced results within 1/32 of an inch, plus 0.04%. A user-calibrated camera was found to be less accurate, at 1/20 of an inch, plus 0.24%. These calibrations demonstrate that photo grammetry can produce research quality measurements in laboratory and mine settings.

Materials for construction of equipment used in hydrometallurgical plants are selected based on a combination of their ability to perform as required in aggressive process environments as well as their cost. As a material of construction, fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) has been shown to provide equal if not improved durability relative to alternative materials such as corrosion resistant alloys at a considerably lower cost. This is particularly true in the case of equipment used in acid leaching processes for copper, cobalt, nickel and rare earth elements. The selection and extensive use of FRP over alloys in new hydromet plant construction in North and South America illustrates this advantage of FRP effectively. This paper will compare corrosion performance and cost of plant equipment fabricated with stainless steel alloys and FRP made with Epoxy Vinyl Ester thermoset resins. Real world case histories for FRP piping, storage tanks, extraction vessels, and electrowinning cells combined with laboratory based corrosion studies will be reviewed to demonstrate how FRP materials are selected for hydrometallurgical equipment.
