Solvent extraction of iron from zinc refinery liquors has been investigated before, mainly on the MEHPA / HC1 stripping combination. Leakage of chloride into the zinc electrolyte and the costs of handling the ferric chloride eluate have prevented this option from being adopted. This work explores the stripping of the ferric loaded organic phase with nitric acid to take advantage of the possibility of regenerating up to 6N nitric acid, and clean spheroidal hematite production by autoclave treatment of ferric nitrate solution. The work was carried out with DEHPA (di 2-ethyl-hexyl phosphoric acid) in kerosine. Degradation testing proved the DEHPA to be very stable, when exposed to nitric acid solutions up to 6N and temperatures up to 70" C over a period of five days. Ferric iron was removed completely froma synthetic hot acid leach liquor, irrespective of the DEHPA concentration. Stripping the ferric turned out to be the problematic step. Although the stripping efficiency was considerable better at 50 than at 20° C, it decreased with increasing DEHPA/Fe ration in the organic phase. Eluates of no more than 5-10 g/l ferric nitrate were produced. surprisingly, nitric acid was found to be a less efficient stripping agent than sulphuric at equivalent normality and its efficacy levelled off above 4N. It was concluded that DEHPA does not appear to be the S.X. reagent to take advantage of the low cost autoclave decomposition of ferric nitrate opportunity in zinc hydrometallurgy and that another S.X. reagent, also resistant to nitric acid, but based on weaker compound formation is needed.

The Bureau of Minas has been charged by the Congress with the responsibility for administrating the provisions of the Federal Coal-Mine Safety Act. One of the important duties of bureau inspectors under this act is to determine whether proper measures are taken to prevent mine explosions, which in moat miner includes Judea adequate rock dusting The investigation made after the explosion in Orient No. 2 mine, December 21, 1951, showed that much information is lacking on the adequacy of current rock-dusting and duet-sampling practices in the United States. To obtain such information, an intensive sampling survey was conducted by the Bureau in an Indiana coal mine. This paper summarizes the more Important findings from this survey, describes special samplings at several Pennsylvania coal miners, and discusses related studies in the Bureau's Experimental coal mine.

"On April 5, 2010 a massive dust-fueled explosion at a longwall mine in southern West Virginia claimed the lives of 29 miners. The mine had experienced large gas inrushes from the floor on two known previous occasions, and natural gas was found emanating from floor fractures behind the longwall shields after the explosion, indicating a likely fuel source for the initial ignition. In succeeding months, another longwall mine operating in the same seam 15 miles away encountered smaller inflows of natural gas that halted production from two different longwall faces. Production was halted at a third longwall mine, 30 miles south of the first, in May 2011, when explosive levels of methane were detected inby the longwall face on the headgate. The same mine was evacuated on March 20, 2014 when a series of floor gas feeders were encountered on the longwall face. A literature review indicated that there has been little documentation or description of these events, and that their size and frequency are unknown. The most significant floor gas inrushes in the United States are believed to have been associated with longwall mining in the Pocahontas No. 3 Seam of western Virginia, in which an estimated 5.8 x 107 ft3 of natural gas was expended from a floor feeder on the longwall face over a two-week period (Aul, pers. comm.).A variety of mechanisms and circumstances are associated with methane emanations from underground mines. Hyman (1987) defined an outburst as a violent, simultaneous release of gas and comminuted rock material into a working face or the interior of a borehole, and indicated that certain soft or fractured coals have a propensity for outburst based on gas desorption rates. In this mechanism, reservoirs of autogenic gas hosted in pockets of soft, crushed coal surrounded by harder coal are released suddenly as confining stress is removed by mining. Hyman (1987) also suggested that highly stressed, relatively gassy coal that is penetrated by mining-induced fractures could be outburst-prone. Clayton et al. (1993) and Ulery (2008) recognized the importance of faults as potential conduits for gas from adjacent strata into coal mines, and suggested that biogenic gas trapped in adjacent strata could migrate into mined coal seams due to a pressure differential. Ulery (2008) distinguished between an outburst and a blower, the latter defined as an event expending a large amount of gas over an extended time period, most often emanating from underlying strata, but without expulsion of coal or rock. Methane feeders are further defined as a subset of blowers that continually expend gas over a long period of time but at a lower rate. Many of the mechanisms discussed by Ulery (2008) relate to geologic features that can impound gas within the seam, releasing a voluminous amount when mining breaches the elastic dike, fault gouge, or other geologic structure that had restricted and compartmentalized coalbed methane migration. Thus, the events discussed in this paper can be described as blowers and feeders. However, detailed geological observations of the three longwall mines discussed in this paper appear to indicate a mechanism that is different from those described by Hyman (1987) or Ulery (2008), in that they did not involve coalbed-sourced gas, and the reservoirs were not hosted by coal seams."

An oil well penetrating the Pittsburgh bituminous coalbed in northern West Virginia was plugged and safely mined through 3 months later. A sensitive chemical tracer, introduced into the oil reservoir before the test, was not detected in the mine air following the plugging and during mining of the pillar and penetration of the well. Effectiveness of the plugging in preventing reservoir gas from entering the mine through the well hole was verified by continuous monitoring of the mine air for indications of sulfur hexafluoride, an inert gas detectable in amounts as minute as 1/2 part per billion. Expandable cement and fly ash-gel-water slurry were utilized to seal the well above and below the coal seam. Three other wells were also plugged using various techniques.

"Pumpable roof supports are currently being used to provide a safe working environment for longwall mining. Because different pumpable supports are visually similar and installed fundamentally in the same manner as other supports, there is a tendency to believe they all perform the same way. However, there are several design parameters that can affect their performance, including the cementitious material properties and the bag construction practices that influence the degree of confinement provided. A full understanding of the impact of these design parameters is necessary to optimize the support application and to provide a foundation for making further improvements in the support performance.This paper evaluates the impact of various support design parameters by examining full-scale performance tests conducted using the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) as part of manufactures' developmental and quality control testing. These tests were analyzed to identify correlations between the support design parameters and the resulting performance. Based on more than 160 tests over 7 years, quantifiable patterns were examined to assess the correlation between the support dimensions, cementitious material type, wire pitch, and single-wall vs dual-walled bag designs to the support capacity, stiffuess, load shedding events, and yield characteristics.INTRODUCTIONDeveloped in the 1990s, the first major use of pumpable supports systems in U.S. longwall operations was in the support of bleeder entries (Barczak, Tadolini, 2008). Since then, they have been utilized as yieldable concrete supports to provide a safe working environment for longwall mining gateroads, bleeders, and emergency escapeways while also maintaining adequate ventilation pathways. The basic structure of pumpable roof supports has remained unchanged over the years. Formed in place with a twopart fast-setting grout, the support material can be pumped into a containment bag from several thousand feet away often through surface boreholes. The containment bag then acts as a form to fill the support and provides confinement to the grout during loading and after failure. Pumpable roof supports provide full contact with the mine roof and floor, which eliminates the need for secondary material to establish proper roof contact (see Figure 1). They provide a high peak load capacity and a sustained, confinement controlled yield behavior while maintaining stable ground conditions, which is essential to underground mining operations."

"The potential health effects of quartz-bearing airborne dust in mine and mill atmospheres point to the need for the quantification of quartz content in the source material for determining the source-sink relationships and for choosing applicable control measures. While a standard method exists from a regulatory point of view for the sampling of coal mine atmospheres for determining (i) respirable dust concentrations and (ii) the amount of quartz in the samples, there is no generally accepted standard method for quartz analysis in bulk samples of coal and host rocks. Generally, the bulk sample is reduced to a powder for producing quartz analysis samples. Extensive controls arc necessary to ensure representativeness of the analysis samples when these are very minute fractions of the bulk samples. Since the amount of analysis sample is not limited, alternative methods for quartz analysis may also be tried. It is, however, necessary to adopt a procedure which will satisfy several statistical requirements to guarantee representativeness of the quartz analysis samples.In this paper, the important factors in the preparation of quartz analysis samples from the host rocks and bulk samples are discussed. The method developed to prepare the analysis samples is outlined. The results of application of the procedures are presented. The procedure developed for quartz analysis sample preparation is based on sound statistical foundations. The procedure has been validated for reproducibility and homogeneity.The current methods used for quartz analysis in powders are the P-7 infrared spectrometry and quantitative X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). Both have similar restrictions concerning the sample characteristics and operational problems, which arc intrinsic to radiation beams, device geometry, mechanics and controls of the radiation behavior. Although improvements can be made in the spectrometers and diffractometers, some of the most important steps are the procedures for analysis sample preparation from bulk samples and for calibration of the instruments. The sample preparation process is often referred to as one of grinding and sizing the bulk sample to generate the powder for the scanning devices. The particle sizes are referred to and their influence emphasized but the representativeness of the sample is assumed. Assuring sample representativeness during the sample preparation procedures is critical.For the sampling of airborne respirable dust in coal mines, the collection devices, the collection procedures and the analysis procedures are defined. This is not true for bulk samples where weights must be reduced thousands of times to generate the analysis samples for the scanning devices. The specifications to be developed may include bulk sample amount, sample reduction procedures, sample particle size distribution and sample amounts. However, the common problem of insufficient sample amount which is often encountered with mine airborne dust samples need not exist for bulk samples. Further, the same bulk sample can yield analysis samples for several experiments. The latter, of course, requires sample homogeneity.Three concepts are important in the selection of any procedure for sample preparation and analysis. These arc accuracy, reproducibility and representativeness. The adopted procedure has to guarantee a homogeneous sample representative of the population, a defined level of accuracy and reproducibility. Important statistical concepts are embedded in these requirements, particularly with respect to estimation and dispersion errors. Accuracy and reproducibility are totally different though not independent concepts. Estimation is related to accuracy and the true value. Dispersion is related to reproducibility and is measured by the classical statistical standard deviation of the distribution of a series of measurements or analysis performed over the same lot or analysis sample. Kinetic tests results are influenced by methodological variables, including test duration and mine waste particle size. Some samples tested produced neutral drainage in kinetic tests for more than two years prior to drainage acidification. The potential for long "lag times" can be assessed based on the mine waste mineralogy. The lag time duration can be estimated using this mineralogy in conjunction with dissolution rates observed in the kinetic tests. The influence of particle size on the drainage quality is dependent on the variation of the availability of acid-producing and acid-neutralizing minerals with particle size.

In 2011, the value of mineral production increased in the United States for the second consecutive year (Table 1). Production increased modestly for most mineral commodities mined in the United States, and price increases, especially for precious metals, resulted in increases in the value of production. Minerals remained fundamental to the U.S. economy, contributing to the real gross domestic product (GDP) at several levels, including mining, processing and manufacturing finished products. Minerals? contribution to the GDP increased for the second consecutive year. Trends in other sectors of the domestic economy were similar to those in mineral production and consumption rates. U.S. apparent mineral consumption (industrial) of 11 mineral commodities decreased substantially from 2005 to 2010 (aluminum, cadmium, cement, copper, iron, lead, salt, soda ash, steel, tin and zinc). Data for 2011 were not calculated, but the data show a sustained decrease (especially for the metals) preceding the recession through 2010, so consumption seems to be behaving differently than production and GDP. After continued decline following the 2008?2009 recession, the construction industry began to show signs of improvement during 2011, with increased production and consumption of cement, construction sand and gravel, and gypsum ? mineral commodities that are used almost exclusively in construction. Crushed stone production, however, continued to decline.

Microorganisms have a tremendous influence on their environment through the transfer of energy, charge, and materials across a complex biotic mineral-solution interface. Recent developments in biotechnology have not only aided hydrometallurgical leaching operations but also shown great promise in mineral beneficiation processes. The adhesion of bacteria on minerals alters the surface properties relevant to flotation and flocculation of minerals. The biomodification of mineral surfaces occurs through the attachment of microbial cells, oxidation reactions and adsorption or chemical reaction with the metabolite products. Several types of heterotrophic and chemolithotrophic bacteria have been successfully applied in flotation and flocculation processes for the last two decades. Al-though the potential of microorganisms in minerals beneficiation has been realised by several re-searchers from their laboratory investigations, the studies were mostly confined to pure mineral systems and there is hardly any sincere effort to apply the methodologies on ores. This paper presents a brief summary of the literature in bioflotation and bioflocculation, and attempts to outline new dimensions of research for a practicable application of this technology in mineral industry.

Conflict over mineral development and its impacts on indigenous peoples occurs in many countries around the world. Canada, Bolivia and Peru have experienced mine development for centuries in areas where indigenous communities have been and continue to be affected by the mining industry. On a global basis the mining industry continues to face the challenge of implementing meaningful consultation programs with indigenous peoples. Many governments around the world have adopted sustainable development as a policy and one important element of sustainable development is minimizing social conflict. John Moffet and Francois Bregha (Moffet & Bregha, 1996), in their analysis of the role of law reform in promoting sustainable development, noted that stakeholder participation can reduce this type of conflict. Social conflict can result in expensive litigation and costly project delays for mine developers. Meaningful consultation with indigenous peoples in areas where mine development is proposed can be a critical factor in securing a social licence to operate. A report released by the United Nations in 2005, outlined the elements of a concept called ?free, prior informed consent? (FPIC) that promotes more sustainable development. FPIC provides that mineral exploration and mining should not proceed unless the mining company has secured the consent of the relevant indigenous group(s). This paper employs a comparative approach to evaluate the extent to which three active mining nations, Canada, Bolivia and Peru, require consultation with indigenous residents and adhere to the principle of FPIC. The comparative approach assists in the identification of those consultation elements in the legal regimes of each country that can minimize social conflict in mineral exploration and mine development and therefore contribute to more sustainable development. First, we examine the legal requirements to consult with and accommodate indigenous communities in Canada, a country with a long history of mineral development over a large geographic area that has entrenched in its Constitution the protection of indigenous peoples? rights. We then turn to an analysis of Bolivia, one of the most indigenously conscious mining jurisdictions that has followed the Canadian lead in entrenching constitutional protection for indigenous peoples. Third, the approach to consultation with indigenous peoples in Peru, a nation that has not adopted the Canadian and Bolivian approaches to constitutional protection of indigenous peoples rights, is considered.

Doubly polished sections (i.e., sections polished on both sides) allow insights into complex paragenetic relationships, the interpretation of which is essential to understanding ore-forming processes. Alternate viewing of these optically superior sections in transmitted and. reflected light facilitates the recognition and definition of growth zones in ore and gangue minerals and the interpretation of postdepositional changes, such as hydrothermal leaching and replacement. Many such observations would escape detection by conventional petrographic methods. Our procedure for preparing doubly polished sections has evolved during the past 20 years and incorporates many standard procedures. Studies from such diverse districts as Creede, Colorado, Hokuroku, Japan, and the Upper Mississippi Valley zinc-lead district, southwestern Wisconsin, demonstrate the value of observations from doubly polished sections in constructing genetic models. The advent of doubly polished sections represents a major advance in the study of ore deposits and they should be a standard tool in every ore petrology laboratory.

Introduction In view of the fact that, during the past year, two Manitoba mines-Flin Fion and Sherritt Gordon-have entered the list of producers and have materially increased that Province's contribution to the metal production of the Dominion, it would seem appropriate at this time to review the progress of the industry in the Province, with particular reference to the out-standing metal-mining developments of the past decade. That these two mines have been able to continue their operations in spite of the low prices of copper and zinc adds a touch of brightness to the industrial life of the Province. Depression in metal prices is not encouraging to the mining industry, but it does stimulate efficiency in methods and costs of production. As two thriving towns have grown around the two mines, the will of the management to carry-on is of great consequence to Manitoba, this year so hard hit by the .agricultural depression. And, much as it is a pleasant feature in the mining situation that these mines have been able to continue operations, nevertheless it must be noted, in reviewing the mining developments of the past few years in Manitoba, that the Province was fortunate enough to profit by good times, in that an industry was established which gives evidence of permanency. In the metallic field, the section of Manitoba that first received attention from prospectors was the boundary district, west of the Lake of the Woods. Several claims were staked here at the time of the gold boom in the neighbouring Ontario area. But the first real interest in metalliferous deposits dates from the discovery of gold in March, 1911, in quartz veins on the shores of Rice lake, some twenty miles east of lake Winnipeg. Systematic and organized prospecting of the pre-Cambrian areas of the Province may be said to have commenced with that discovery. The first gold discovery in northern Manitoba was made at Wekusko (Herb) lake in 1914. This was followed by the discovery of the Flin Flan and Mandy copper ore-bodies in 1915 on Flin Fion and Schist lakes, respectively.

"INTRODUCTION Geological examination of the Iron Mountain beryllium deposits was begun by a field part 3/ of the Federal Geological Survey in May 1942. Later in that month the occurrence was examined by the author and C. H. Johnson, of the Bureau of Mines, and a preliminary exploratory program was outlined. Trenching and sampling began about June 15 and were completed in July 1942. A large tonnage of beryllium-bearing material was indicate by this preliminary survey, so that additional funds wore allotted for further trenching and sampling, underground exploratory work, and diamond drilling. This later program was initiated in July 1942 and was completed in May 1943. 4/ACKNOWLEDGEMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilisation of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. "Implicit modelling is an approach to spatial modelling in which the distribution of a target variable is described by a unique mathematical function that is derived directly from the underlying data and high-level parametric controls specified by the user. This modelling approach may be applied to discrete variables such as lithology (after converting the discrete codes to numeric values) or to continuous variables such as geochemical grades. This paper discusses the estimation of continuous (grade) variables using implicit modelling.One of the underlying engines of implicit modelling for producing this mathematical function description is the radial basis function (RBF). In essence, the RBF is a weighted sum of functions positioned on each data point. A system of linear equations is solved to derive weights and the coefficients of any underlying drift model coefficients. Once derived, the RBF may be solved for any unsampled point or averaged over any volume to provide an estimate of grade. It is possible, for example, to query the RBF on a regular grid to derive an estimate of block grades. Given the ease of creation of an RBF, and its ability to predict grade, the question arises as to how the grades derived from the solution of an RBF compare with grade estimates derived from conventional geostatistical interpolation methods (eg ordinary kriging (OK)).The purpose of this paper is to describe in lay terms: the basic structure of an RBF the role of parametric choice in the solution of RBFs and how this influences the character of the solution the fundamental similarities and differences between RBFs and conventional geostatistical estimators.Using a high-resolution conditional simulation, we show that in many situations RBF and OK estimates are very similar.CITATION:Stewart, M, de Lacey, J, Hodkiewicz, P F and Lane, R, 2014. ROES« is a proposed new mining system for underground hard rock mines. Ore is accessed from within a shaft, which is located close to or within the stope, and pitched either vertical or within approximately 20 degrees of vertical. The shaft is designed to exclude personnel entry so production drilling and explosive placement is done using remotely controlled or automated machines. Routine remotely controlled survey of the shaft, stope back and broken rock within the stope is typically done following each blast. The survey may include excavation geometry, rock fragmentation and geotechnical characteristics. Blastholes are surveyed before placement of explosives. This provides mine operators and engineers with real-time data, allowing them to monitor production performance and risk factors so that they can make rapid changes as required. ROES« is designed to apply to open stoping or sublevel caving situations either in disseminated, geologically defined, thick tabular or narrow vein orebodies. The technologies developed for ROES« will also have potential applications to block caving operations to reduce the risk of frozen ore and poor fragmentation. In a typical sublevel open stope application, ROES« will reduce the amount of stope-associated development by about half and therefore will allow ore to be brought on-stream sooner and at significantly reduced cost. Other savings are expected to flow from the centralisation of mining activities and operational data, reduction in mining fleet, reduction in ventilation requirements, improved occupational safety and reduced mine complexity. CSIRO and Orica Mining Services are developing the required technology and AMIRA is seeking sponsorship for a project to trial the mining method. This paper details the ROES« method, expected benefits and applications and includes typical stope and mining block designs and design requirements.

Details on how Mount Isa Mines has achieved approximately 30 per cent cost reduction in backfill operations through innovations are given. The development of a rocky paste fill is explained.

The knowledge-based expert systems (KBES) is a potentially powerful technique to the mining engineer in traditional areas of mine design and operations, as well as in the emerging areas of mining automation and robotics. Since KBES is still experimental in many respects, caution must be exercised as this "high tech" tool is developed and applied to mining. The objective of this paper is to demystify expert systems by introducing the elements of KBES, discussing the strengths and weaknesses, and identifying some areas of application in mining, based on the authors' experiences.

"To satisfy their continuing need to replenish or expand their ore reserves, mining companies are faced with the dilemma of arriving at a proper balance between the dual avenues of discovery through in-house exploration and of acquisition of properties that are relatively proven or are even in production. The returns from exploration activities may be spectacular, but are unpredictable. The allure of an acquisition lies in its promise of quick and risk-reduced addition to reserves. However, it is historically clear that quantum increments in shareholders’ values have arisen primarily through major exploration discoveries, rather than through major late-stage acquisitions. Late-stage acquisitions can prove highly profitable, sometimes based upon the planned use of superior mining or metallurgical technology, but more often occur as the result of unexpected windfalls. At the other extreme, they can become expensive failures through inadequate due diligence, or unforeseeable factors.Citing numerous case histories and industry statistics, it is concluded that a judicious combination of both exploration activity and the acquisition of prospects is the most advantageous strategy for adding new ore reserves. A skilled exploration staff is essential for success, be it through exploration discoveries or through opportunistic acquisitions, preferably at their early stages. In the future, it is anticipated that there will be fewer opportunities for acquisition because of reduced funding for junior exploration companies, leading to increased competition and higher costs for fewer properties, both in the advanced exploration and mining stages."

"Mine hoists are built to handle a certain nameplate capacity; they are specified and designed according to the required duty. However, as production capacity increases in other parts of an operation, the hoist capacity can become the critical constraint. Such a situation occurred at Lundin Mining’s Neves-Corvo operation. This paper examines how each component of the existing hoisting system was examined and optimized. Through a combination of engineering study and hoist simulations, the annual hoisting capacity was improved by 24% through increases in payload capacity and available hoisting time combined with a reduction in cycle time, while no changes were made to the hoist motor, drum or headframe. The additional payload capacity was achieved by reducing the mass of the hoist ropes and skips, and improving load monitoring systems. The cycle time was reduced through the shortening of the creep distances and increased availability through the installation of a shaft collar safety platform, alternative guide rope bushes, and superior liners for both the skips and underground measuring flasks. Enhanced cooling of the hoist electrical system was also incorporated to increase hoist availability by reducing downtime during hot summer months. The changes will increase the capacity from the current 4.5 mega tonnes per annum (Mtpa) to a planned 5.6 Mtpa and are being implemented over a 2-year period whilst maintaining the mine production during the upgrade work. INTRODUCTION Neves-Corvo Mine Neves-Corvo is primarily a copper and zinc mine producing copper, zinc and lead concentrates. The operation is owned and operated by Somincor, the Portuguese subsidiary of Lundin Mining. Located in the Alentejo district of southern Portugal, the operation is situated approximately 15 km southeast of the town of Castro Verde, where summer temperatures can reach as high as 45ºC, and approximately 220 km southeast of Lisbon. The principal means of mine access is via a ramp from surface, with the vertical shaft used to hoist ore and waste from the 700 m level, while conveyors descend from the 700 m level to transport ore and waste up from the deeper levels of the mine. The mine is highly mechanized and several different stoping methods are employed, with the most significant being bench-and-fill and drift-and-fill. The Neves-Corvo mine currently exploits five orebodies: Neves, Corvo, Graça, Zambujal and Lombador for copper and zinc-lead ores which are processed in one of two plants. All the orebodies are currently exploited over their full elevation with the exception of Lombador which is only mined down to the 220 m level, approximately the top 50% of the orebody, known as Lombador Phase 1."
