"Mining operations are often located in remote arid environments with limited access to fresh water. Shortage of fresh water in such cases makes it necessary to use seawater in mineral processing plants. Such plants treating Cu- Mo sulfide ores in seawater have been fully operational in Chile (e.g. Las Luces, Centinela). In many cases process waters used in commercial flotation plants (e.g. Mt Keith in Western Australia) are even more concentrated electrolyte solutions than seawater. This paper is an attempt at classification of the flotation operations carried out in process waters that are concentrated electrolyte solutions.INTRODUCTIONAccording to Gleick (1966), of the total Earth’ water resources 97.5% is in the oceans and ice caps, and thus only about 2.5% is fresh water. Shortage of fresh water in many parts of the world makes it necessary to use seawater in mineral processing operations. The existing commercial operations using seawater as well as recent research projects that deal not only with sulfide ores but also with apatite ores provide a lot of information that can now be generalized. The progress that has been made in this area is reviewed and based on this information an attempt is being made at classifying the flotation operations carried out in highly concentrated electrolyte process waters.SALT FLOTATIONFlotation in highly concentrated electrolyte solutions was studied by Klassen (Klassen, 1963). He reported that hydrophobic, bituminous coals, could float in salt solutions without addition of any other flotation agents. The process is referred to as salt flotation. Other inherently hyhrophobic minerals (e.g. talc, graphite, sulfur, etc.) were shown to behave similarly (Klassen and Mokrousov, 1963)As Figure 1 shows, some coals float quite well in solutions of Na2SO4, NaCl and NaNO3 (Klassen, 1963). While there are differences between the tested salts (explained by different foamabilities of these solutions) all the tests indicate that only bituminous coals float well in concentrated electrolyte solutions. 0.3 M solutions are quite sufficient to initiate a good and very fast flotation. If wettability of various coals is compared it becomes obvious that these well floating coals are very hydrophobic bituminous coals (Figure 2)."

The slag was attempted to be converted into the adsorbent for phosphate removal from aqueous solution using the alkali fusion method. The slag was mixed with NaOH powder (NaOH / Slag = 1.6), and then the mixture was heated at 600 ? for 6 h to prepare the precursor. The precursor was stirred at room temperature in distilled water to synthesize the adsorbent, and the removal ability of the obtained adsorbent for phosphate from aqueous solution was investigated. The products, including hydrocalumite and calcite, were synthesized, and the removal efficiencies of the adsorbent for F- and PO43- showed higher than those of raw BF slag, especially removal of PO43- are excellent (99 %), while the removal of Cl- , SO42-, NO3- and Br- was minor. The adsorbent could remove PO43- selectively in the co-existing solution of Cl-, NO3-, F-, SO42- and Br-.The equilibrium adsorption capacity of the adsorbent for PO43- was extrapolated using Langmuir and Freundlich models, and experimental data are found to fit Langmuir than Freundlich. The calculated maximum adsorption capacity of the adsorbent for PO43- is higher than other adsorbent reported previously. The high affinity of the adsorbent for PO43- in aqueous solution was caused by the formation of hydroxyapatite [Ca5(PO4)3(OH)] and brushite [CaHPO4?2H2O]. Mine drainage contains metals and sulfate, which may be toxic to aquatic life at certain concentrations and should be removed to acceptable levels before release of any drainage to the environment. One method for treating mine drainage is passive treatment, which is increasing in popularity due to lower construction and operating costs. This method is based on the activity of sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) respiring on sulfate while using fermentation products from decomposing complex organic materials. The product of this biological process is hydrogen sulfide, which reacts with metals in mine drainage and precipitates them as metal sulfides. However, in practice passive treatment systems are not always effective, reducing the reliability of this approach. In this study, a mixture of hay, cow manure and wood chips was tested in continuous flow experiments for efficacy at sustainable treatment of sulfate and selenium containing water from a mine tailings pond. Factors that contributed to a decline in performance included lowering of the pH due to acids leaching out of the organics, re-oxidation of sulfide back to sulfate and a reduction in dissolved organic compounds over time. In this paper methods are described to overcome these problems so that treatment is made more reliable.

"The reserves and production of steep coal seams account for approximately 15–20% of the total coal reserves in China and 5–10% of the total annual coal production. More than 50% of the coal is high-quality coking coal and anthracite, based on reviews of steeply dipping seam mining at home and abroad. Fully mechanized mining is considered to be the only safe and efficient way to mine steeply dipping seams. To achieve fully mechanized longwall mining, four issues must be addressed: ground control, equipment stability control, development of complete sets of equipment, and safety. Engineers must focus on many factors of steeply dipping seams, such as the following: stope, roof asymmetrical structure, stability control, “roof-support-floor” system dynamics control, multi-region big-range ground control technology, adjustment false-inclined method, nonlinear layout method, control technology, safety, and development of complete sets of equipment. Engineering practices in China introduce these concepts systematically: fully mechanized mining of medium-thickness seams, fully mechanized high mining of thick seams, fully mechanized caving of extremely thick coal seams, fully mechanized mining of coal seams, roadway support, and so on. A steeply dipping seam is one with a dipping angle in the range of 35°–55°. This accounts for about 15%–20% of the total coal reserves in China. Because of the environment, more than 50% of the coal is high-quality coking coal and anthracite. Mining steeply dipping coal seams is known to be difficult in the mining industry. After the study conducted by Germany, Poland, and the former Soviet Union in the1970s–1980s, the fully mechanized mining basic theory, core technology, and key equipment research have not been a breakthrough. Being fully mechanized is a technological “restricted area” at home and abroad. A lot of steeply dipping seams are excavated by non-mechanized mining, leading to harsh job environments, labor-intensive work, low productivity, frequent accidents, and significant security hazards. The death rate per million tons of coal reaches above 4.0 and is far higher than slow inclined coal seam mining. Making steeply dipping seam mining safe and efficient is a global problem that urgently needs to be solved. Fully mechanized mining is the only way to overcome these problems (Wu, 2003; Wu, Yun, and Zhou, 2000). The realization of fully mechanized coal seam mining must solve four problems. (1) Examine the disaster mechanisms induced by overburden “key strata” mutation under steeply dipping seams as a basis for ground control methods and technical problems. (2) Work to solve the dynamic stability control technical problems of thousands of tons of complete sets of equipment under the steeply dipping seams. (3) Complete sets of equipment must be developed to adapt to the conditions of steeply dipping seams. (4) Overcome the steeply dipping face safety protection technical problems. In the last two decades, a number of universities, research institutes, and enterprises have realized the importance of safety and efficiency of steeply dipping seams in China. This is especially true of Professor Wu Yongping’s “hard coal layer safe and efficient mining” team at Xi’an University of Science and Technology. After several generations’ research and technical work, the team puts forward China’s longwall mechanized coal mining of steeply dipping seams strata control basic theory. This paper puts forth a series of key technologies of fully mechanized mining, develops and manufactures complete sets of equipment by independent innovation, and establishes a perfect face security system, forming a theory and technology system for fully mechanized longwall mining of steeply dipping seams."

The original analogue instrumentation at Lornex Mining Corporation to optimize the throughput by controlling the power drawn by the semi-autogenous mills was found to be inadequate because of the frequent changes in ore type. Although the trunnion bearing pressure of the mill was a crucial control criterion, it was not utilized in the original control scheme. After several plant tests of different types of analogue controllers were unsuccessful in finding any control equipment suitable for this application, it was concluded that a digital process control computer was required. Computer control strategy to optimize the grinding rate by controlling the power and the bearing pressure of the semi-autogenous mill was developed and a Fox 2 /30 computer made by Foxboro was selected. After six months of experimentation, it was found that the throughput was increased substantially by computer control.

Rock breakage is a major component of all mining and mineral processing operations with the particle size distribution linked to productivity through the comminution chain. Optimisation and automatic control of comminution, material handling, and agglomeration processes is a complex task with large potential for gains in productivity, and energy efficiency. A key factor in realising these gains is the requirement for fully-automated online particle size distribution measurement to provide the necessary feedback and input for control. Moreover, to enable automatic control system it is necessary to provide a consistent, reliable size distribution measurement that avoids the significant errors resulting from under-sizing overlapped particles and over-sizing clusters of fine particles. Published literature and observation of commercial systems indicate a body of predominantly 2D photographic based particle size measurement systems that suffer from a number of significant errors except in the simplest case of a monolayer of particles under good illumination with limited colour variation in the material. In order to overcome these limitations a university and industry collaboration developed three-dimensional particle measurement (3DPM) between 2006 and 2012, based on 3D surface profile measurement of the visible material on conveyor. 3DPM avoids particle delineation errors due to variation in material colour and shadows, detects overlapping versus non-overlapping particles, and identifies areas of fine particles as fines and not large rocks. 3DPM measures: the visible material and calculates its particle size distribution, bulk volume, detects boulders, and conveyor belt fill factor in an automated consistent manner. Furthermore, 3DPM’s advanced algorithms allow observation of particle variation that would otherwise be undetected without the capacity to identify visible areas-of-fines and overlapped particles. Boliden Mines has installed 3DPM at three operations for measurement between the stockpile silo and grinding mill, and measurement after the primary crusher. Fragmentation measurements across multiple years of measurement are presented with some observations of plant behaviour. In the future 3DPM results will be incorporated into automatic control strategies for plant optimisation. 3DPM is used across a wide range of material types and applications that also includes; limestone aggregate for quality control in manufacturing, agglomerates for closed-loop automatic control in chemical production, and measurement of coke for size-based blending feed control to the blast furnace in steel production. A spectrochemical procedure applicable to the determination of iron, manganese, and magnesium in titanium metal and to the determination of alloying constituents in three types of titanium alloys is presented. Acid solutions of samples and standards are excited with a spark-type discharge and porous-cup electrode arrangement. The method is particularly applicable for analyzing samples for which a self-electrode method cannot be used. Calibrations are accomplished with synthetic standard solutions, resulting in a primary method that makes calibrations based upon results of other analytical methods unnecessary. Replicate determinations are reproduced to within 5 percent, and the average percentage deviations from reliable chemical values are less than 6 percent. The method can be extended readily to determine additional elements that are similarly soluble and have similar spectral sensitivities. It also can be used as a starting point to establish standards for a direct sparking procedure for analyzing titanium alloys. In view of the absence of established reliable analytical methods in the titanium industry, the spectrochemical method described here should prove to be a timely contribution.

Excavation of industrial-scale furnaces allows for the systematic study of reaction sequences by identifying the different reaction zones within the furnace. In 2013, Transalloys excavated a 48 MVA submerged arc furnace that was used for silicomanganese production using the ore-based route. The excavation method was reported elsewhere as was observations made in terms of refractory wear and modes of electrical energy dissipation prior to excavation. The paper presented here, reports on the process reaction zones observed during the excavation and subsequent phase chemical analyses of a number of process samples obtained during the excavation. The zones identified were a loose burden zone, a dry coke-bed zone, a wet coke-bed zone, a hard build-up zone, and an alloy zone. The results are compared to observations made in the excavation of an industrial-scale SAF and a pilot-scale SAF in Norway. The presence of the hard build-up zone below one of the electrodes and absence of a slag zone below all three electrodes are unique features of the SAF excavated at Transalloys.

The technical feasibility of ammonia leaching of PGM bearing Platreef flotation concentrates was investigated as an alternative method for the recovery of base metals prior to precious metal recovery. The composition of the concentrates includes 2.02% Cu and 3.17% Ni, and the major base metal minerals are chalcopyrite and pentlandite. Optimal leaching conditions were initially established in shake flask experiments to be a solution containing 4 M NH4OH, 4 M (NH4)2CO3 and a pH range between 9 and 10. These were used as base case conditions in column and batch stirred tank reactor tests, where the effects of total ammonia concentration and operating temperature were explored further. At optimal conditions nearly 100% Cu and Ni extraction were obtained in the batch stirred tank reactor, and 95% Cu and 60% Ni extraction was obtained in columns. The activation energy for chalcopyrite and pentlandite was 36 kJ/mol and 16 kJ/mol, respectively, in both reactors, indicating different reaction pathways for the two minerals. Gas-liquid mass transfer appears to be the limiting reaction step in columns much more than in tanks, and the degree of ammonia loss to air is significant. This initial test work indicates the feasibility of using ammonia leaching for this and similar materials as an alternative route to conventional smelting and refining prior to PGM recovery, but a number of technical challenges still need to be overcome.

The Ontario Division of The International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited, operates five underground mines and one open pit on the rim of the Sudbury Basin located in the Province of Ontario, 230 miles northwest of Toronto. Four of the mines, Frood-Stobie, Creighton, Murray and Garson, lie on the South range of the Basin within a 10-mile radius of the City of Sudbury; the fifth mine, Levack, is on the North range, about 30 miles northwest of the city. The ores are mined primarily for nickel and copper, the principal minerals being pentlandite and chalcopyrite. Other elements recovered from the ores in varying quantities are platinum, palladium, ruthenium, iridium, rhodium, cobalt, selenium, tellurium, iron, sulphur, gold and silver. In 1962, the total underground ore production was over 10,800,000 tons which was mined mainly by blasthole and caving methods with the remainder by cut-and-fill, square set, and undercut-and-fill techniques.

Prior to 1995, the smelting process at the Kennecott Utah Copper Corporation (KUCC) smelter consisted of Noranda reactors and Pierce-Smith converters. In the consideration of expansion opportunities, the existing process did not lend itself to a program geared towards processing the total output of KUCC mining and milling operations. During 1989 and 1990, a number of smelting options were evaluated. The final selection was the Outokumpu flash smelting process, coupled with the new Kennecott-Outokumpu flash converting technology. Facilities were designed and installed to process 1.0 million tonnes per year of copper concentrate, with the ability to expand to 1.2 million tonnes per year. Following the shutdown of the smelter facility utilizing the Noranda technology in May 1995, the flash smelting furnace commenced operation in June with the flash converting furnace startup following a few weeks later. The smelter has achieved design production targets and environmental goals. Current operating rates are at or above design rates for concentrate and matte processing. Emissions are lower than the permit levels and equate to less than 3.5 kg of S02 per tonne of copper. This paper outlines the design, construction, startup and the first two years of operation of the modernized KUCC smelter.

During operation of tailings impoundments, water is lost through decanting, evaporation and seepage. Techniques have been developed to regulate or control each of these components. Collectively implemented, these techniques form the basis of tailings impoundment management. Regulation of the rate and level of decanting influences the size of a free water pond, and, thereby, the amount of evaporation and seepage, which are both area-dependent. Conversely, the encouragement of seepage and/or evaporation could also be used to reduce decanting requirements. Management of one of the components of a tailings impoundment's water balance is reflected in changes in the other components. The seepage component has the greatest potential impact on the environment, and consequently requires the closest scrutiny. Water percolating through tailings backfill transports heavy metals and other dissolved solids from the impoundment into the local groundwater regime. Depending on the seepage volume and concentration of contaminants, seepage from impoundments could exceed environmentally tolerable limits. Once mobilized, seepage-borne pollution is much more difficult to treat, mainly because of the problems in collecting the diffusive transportation medium. Pollution abatement measures relative to tailings impoundment seepage depend on seepage prevention or reduction. Seepage control measures include constructing barriers to flow, pump-back systems of interception and restricting the supply of water available for seepage.

PbSO4 is a commonly encountered component of the materials used in lead recycling (e.g. battery paste) and in by-products of metallurgical processes (e.g. residues from zinc hydrometallurgy, dust from copper smelting). Smelting of battery paste results in SO2 emission and in generation of significant amounts of hazardous ‘white slag’. Those adverse phenomena can be eliminated by removal of sulphur from the paste. Lead-bearing by-product materials are of polymetallic character with usually low Pb content, which makes lead recovery technologically difficult and uneconomic. However it can be successfully achieved by extraction of lead sulphate from solid phase with triethylenetetramine (TETA) water solutions. That compound has capability for selective solvation of a whole lead sulphate molecule. Virtually pure lead carbonate can be precipitated by means of saturation of lead-loaded aqueous TETA solution with carbon dioxide, and complete regeneration of the extractant is achieved by fixing of sulphate ion into gypsum through operation of calcium hydroxide suspension. The paper presents results of the lab and pilot scale studies into process of battery paste desulphurisation and recovery of lead from the residue of zinc calcine leaching.

"The Cerro Corona mine consists of a Cu-Au porphyry deposit located in the Andes of northern Peru. The deposit comprises a typical Cu-Au multiphase porphyry mineralisation that has been overprinted by an epithermal event. This has generated a complex pattern of argillic alteration facies, which was accompanied by a locally structural-controlled Au-Cu mineralisation with the presence of gold and limited Cu sulfides and sulfosalts. These features, along with the porphyry-style mineralisation, produced a multifaceted occurrence of gold.Since the beginning of operations at Cerro Corona in 2008 there has been a continuous improvement of the geological and mineralogical knowledge. All mineralogical studies have mainly focused on host rock types and, to a lesser extent, alteration minerals, but little work has been done on the mineralisation itself. As a consequence, limited mineralogical information was available for use in the process optimisation initiatives.In the last two years, a series of mineralogical characterisation studies were undertaken with two main goals. First, to gain an understanding of the mineralisation genesis and second, to obtain a detailed characterisation of copper and gold minerals to support ongoing process optimisation. The first goal was achieved by conventional optical microscopy while the second required electronic microscopy and other microanalyses due to the necessity of quantifying several minerals of interest for the processing.The results were used to refine pre-existing geometallurgical domains, explain copper and gold losses in the flotation process and to some extent, improve copper and gold recoveries. The mineralogical characterisation is an ongoing work. THE Gunnar Gold Mines property is on the west shore of Beresford lake, in the Rice Lake mining division, southeastern Manitoba. Gold was first discovered in place in the Rice-Beresford Lakes area in 1911 on the Gabrielle claim, now included in the San Antonio Mines property at Rice lake. Following an eastward trend of favourable prospecting ground, promising showings were next staked in the vicinity of Long lake during the years 1915 and 1916. At that time, William Walton and associates, among them Gilbert LaBine, staked the Eldorado vein, north of Long lake, and Eldorado Gold Mines, Limited, was formed to develop the property a Company that, later, was to become widely known through successful operation of its radium-silver mine at Great Bear lake, Northwest Territories. Continuing eastward from Long lake, Walton and his partners, Gunnar Berg, Leo Seaberg, and Wm. Quesnel, staked claims during the years 1920-24 in the vicinity of Beresford lake which, later, were to become incorporated into the Gunnar Gold Mines property. The presence of gold-bearing quartz on these claims had been known from the time they were staked, but an opportunity to consolidate them into a group was not forth-coming until early in the year 1933. Although promising gold showings had been disclosed during the performance of assessment work on individual claims, no continuous mineralization having mine-making possibilities was discovered until after the consolidation of the entire group. From this stage onward, progress was rapid. Active exploration was begun on August 1st, 1933, and late in October James Houston reported favourably on the property. On October 27th, Gunnar Gold Mines, Limited, was incorporated in the Province of Ontario to develop and operate the property. The Company is also registered in Manitoba. The authorized capitalization is 3,000,000 shares of $1.00 par value. Gilbert LaBine was appointed president of the Company, with James Houston as mine manager. Following completion of a diamond-drilling programme, planned in 1933, it was decided to install a mine plant capable of carrying development to a depth of 1,000 feet. A transmission line, 5 miles in length, was built to the Great Falls-Central Manitoba line of the Manitoba Power Company, Limited.

Pyrite, as the host mineral in refractory gold ores and concentrates, has been treated by pressure oxidation in sulfuric acid solutions at temperatures above 180°C to liberate gold prior to cyanidation since the 1980's. However, no data is available on the kinetics of pyrite during acid pressure oxidation over the temperature range of 180 to 230°C which is the range employed by most commercial plants. The dissolution of pyrite (FeS,) in sulfuric acid solution under oxygen pressure was investigated at temperatures ranging from 170 to 230°C. The effects of temperature, particle size, agitation speed, oxygen partial pressure, and pulp density were evaluated. The effects of foreign ion addition and the concentration of sulfuric acid were also examined. The apparent activation energy was estimated to be 42.6 kJ/mol in the temperature range 170 to 230°C. The reaction orders with respect to particle size and oxygen partial pressure were found to be -1.5 and 0.5 at 210°C, respectively. Experimental evidence suggests that the kinetics are limited by the surface chemical reaction initially, and then also to some extent by the diffusion of ferrous ions away from the particle surface.

The only known large deposits of talc in Alabama occur near Winterboro, Talladega County. Preliminary examinations were made, and work by the Bureau of Mines was recommended. The deposits were investigated to determine the amount and grade of talc present and to search for new talc deposits in the general area. Seventy-five holes, totaling 3370.4 feet, were drilled with Government-owned core drills from August 1, 1948, to February 11, 1949, and 27 samples were taken for assay. This report presents the factual data disclosed by drilling and the results of beneficiation of the talc.

The Pueblo Viejo project in the Dominican Republic installed an innovative sample system on its reverse circulation (RC) drilling rig during commissioning and subsequent commencement of operations. As knowledge of the orebody increased with mining and plant production, cost pressures became apparent that raised questions concerning the continued use of RC drilling versus blasthole sampling for ore control.To justify the continued use of RC drilling for grade control, an in-depth study was undertaken to determine the quality of the sample and prove its value-add to the operation.To investigate the differences in sample quality, a complete bench trial was initiated across both ore pits to compare RC drill results with blasthole assays on a side-by-side basis. The results indicated that based on ore block comparison between RC and blasthole sampling, RC identified an additional 20 per cent of high-grade (+ 4.5 g/t Au) ounces.Previous work indicated that Au, Ag and Cu were all elevated in the drill fines at Pueblo Viejo (Goers and Almond, 2012). This previous test work did not consider the quantity of fines in an RC sample therefore new test work was undertaken to include particle size distribution analyses. This study would determine if the inclusion of fines in the sample was occurring and compare the quantity of fines in the sample against other sample systems and blasthole samples.Comparisons between RC samples and blasthole samples indicate that for the RC samples a range of 30–35 per cent of the sample passed 300 mesh as compared to blastholes where the range of the sample passing 300 mesh was 15–30 per cent.This paper includes a case study on the importance of accurate samples and how they have impacted throughput through the pressure oxidation process plant at Pueblo Viejo. The accurate samples provided by RC allow for improved stockpile and blending strategies, showing the importance of accurate samples to manage risk and create value, against the perception that savings can be made at the risk of poor sampling performance.CITATION:Almond, M and Ventura, L, 2017.
