Incidents that trap miners in underground mines have serious consequences for the miners and the mine operators involved. It is of utmost importance that mine operators utilise all available tools when trying to locate and rescue trapped miners. From testing conducted at underground hard rock mines, Cumming-Potvin et al (2013) found that pre-existing microseismic monitoring systems, which are routinely used for seismic risk management, have the potential to be used for detecting and locating trapped miners.This paper reflects on the Anzac Day seismic event that trapped two miners at Tasmania Mine, Beaconsfield, on 25 April 2006. The Anzac Day event occurred at 2123 on a Tuesday evening. Rescuers were unable to confirm that the trapped miners had survived until 1930 on Sunday evening. It is not possible to speculate on how the rescue operation may have been different had the technology to use the microseismic monitoring system for the purpose of detecting the trapped miners been available. However, it almost certainly would have been different. The recent research project has demonstrated that knowing the fate of the Beaconsfield miners might have been achievable up to 100 hours earlier than was the case in 2006. That knowledge would have been invaluable to the rescue effort.By examining the seismic array at the Tasmania Mine, the reliability of detection over the working levels of the mine could be quantified. Had the methodology been available, adding six additional sensors (at a cost of $40 000), would have been sufficient to increase the likelihood of detection to greater than 90 per cent in the working levels of the mine. Mines today use various methods of mining to extract ore. Because of the dangerous nature of many of these processes, remotely controlled LHD machines are being used to extract the ore from the draw point. The remote control system, although being made safer all the time, has remained virtually unchanged for many years. The basic functionality is an operator switching the machine to remote control, getting out of the cab, walking up a stand, operating remotely, returning to the cab, switching to manual, driving manually, switching to remote, and switching to manual. It seems repetitive, and time consuming, does it not? Networking, convergence, video, voice, and data infrastructures, and other technologies are growing by leaps and bounds in virtually every industry and region, except for mining. From the comfort of the living room couch, a Canadian can play hockey online with full voice conversations over the Internet with someone in Russia in real time. Yet, a mine superintendent must jump through hoops to have a private conversation with the front line supervisor underground. "Is Joe around anywhere?" If Joe hears the message, he will respond. If not, who knows? Maybe he's hurt. Maybe he's not. Where is Joe? Nobody really knows, and that is scary. Today, surface knows that the workers disappeared into the cage at 7:00 a.m. They also know that the workers will probably and hopefully return at 3:00 p.m. Is there not a better way to handle this? With such a complex industry, it seems as if, for the most part, the introduction of new technology into mining has either been overlooked or has been met with some resistance. It is time to step back, look at the process, and see how it can be improved. Key areas of focus will be safety, productivity, dependability, and cost-effectiveness.

The Mineral Processing Industry needs accurate Production Simulators for the design of future plants and expansions. To achieve this, these simulators should not only provide an accurate portrayal of the dynamics of individual pieces of equipment they should include the impact of discrete stochastic events such as scheduled and unscheduled maintenance so the relationships between availability, equipment sizes, and plant capacity are understood. To provide such a tool accurate dynamic Population Balance Models need to be combined with solid discrete event modeling. The current paper provides a description of how these two disparate modeling techniques were combined and the associated benefits from this combination. Most aspects of process design are best addressed via bench scale or pilot plant scale test work. However, as experience is gained, fundamental or indicative data can provide more than adequate information to manage the risk associated with some process aspects of concentrator design.Historical precedence exists where minimal design test work has resulted in successful projects. On many occasions benchmarking, sometimes supported by fundamental data such as mineralogy, has been used to successfully develop effective process plant outcomes. Of course, this style of approach is most common with æfast trackÆ projects and often comes with the usual surprises that result from inadequate geometallurgy to define the project cash flow.This paper explores the risks and opportunities associated with the various facets of process development and design for a base metals concentrator. Several different strains of bacteria have been shown capable of reducing hexavalent chromium, Cr(VI), to Cr(III), a less toxic, .. more readily recoverable form of Cr. This paper examined the Cr(VI) reduction efficacies of 3 different Cr(VI) reducing bacteria: Pseudomonas f1uorescens LB300., Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAOI, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAOI (pCROI) It was demonstrated that all three bacterial stratns reduced Cr(VI) primarily during their exponential growth phases while using glucose as their carbon and energy source. Significant differences in the three organisms' Cr(Vl) reduction capabilities depending on initial Cr(VI) concentrations were also demonstrated. P. aeruginosa PAOI showed superior Cr(VI) reducing capabilities over the. entire range of Cr(VI) concentrations tested while the Cr(VI) reduction capabilities of the other two strains were increasingly inhibited as Cr(VI) concentrations increased.

The Penetrating Cone Fracture (PCF) technology 1 is a new method of rock excavation developed by Sunburst Excavation, Inc. of Denver, Colorado. PCF is a rock excavation method which employs tensile breakage mechanisms under controlled conditions to enable the continuous excavation of rock?in underground and some surface applications. The technology has developed rapidly over the last two years to the point where it is now being prepared for commercial application in the mining and civil construction industries. The initial commercial application of PCF will be undertaken at the Perseverance Nickel Mine of Western Mining Corporation Limited in Western Australia beginning in May, 1994.

Each year, Florida mines approximately 40 million tons of phosphorite, most of which is ultimately converted to various commercial fertilizers. The phosphorite is mined from within the bottom portion of the 40-to 60-ft. thick surficial aquifer, using open pit mining techniques. The ore zone or "matrix" is generally overlain by relatively permeable fine sand to silty and slightly clayey fine sand. The ore itself is highly variable in nature but, in Central Florida, typically consists of less permeable clayey phosphatic sands and sandy clays with stringers of permeable sand. The ore is much more sandy in the north Florida mining area.

Au printemps 2011, la Corporation minière Osisko met en production le gisement Canadian Malartic, qui devient la plus importante mine d?or à ciel ouvert au Canada. Pour lui faire place, elle a déménagé un quartier de 205 maisons et construit 6 nouveaux bâtiments institutionnels. Les démarches ont commencé en 2006. La compagnie a d?abord établi l?emplacement du nouveau quartier résidentiel, en collaboration avec la Ville de Malartic, puis fait la conception de ce quartier de manière à refléter au mieux les caractéristiques du quartier à déménager. Elle a ensuite effectué une opération d?assignation consistant à proposer à chaque propriétaire intéressé un lot dans le nouveau quartier. Au total, 140 résidences ont été déménagées en 2008 et 2009 et 65 été rachetées par la compagnie, le tout par des ententes de gré à gré sauf pour un seul cas. La réussite d?une opération d?une telle importance sociale n?a été possible que parce que la compagnie s?est assurée d?un soutien massif de la population et des autorités pendant tout le processus. Cette expérience peut être fort utile pour les nombreux projets miniers dont l?insertion dans la communauté est un enjeu important.

Automated mineralogy methods and tools, such as the Mineral Liberation Analyzer (MLA) and the QEMSCAN, are now widely used for ore characterization, process design and optimization. Several case studies published recently demonstrate that large gains can be obtained through grinding and flotation optimization guided by automated mineralogy data. However, since automated mineralogy can only provide the information pointing to where the process gains can be made, it does not directly impact the production gain. Thus, a question is often asked: how to value the contribution of automated mineralogy to process improvement of a particular plant. This appears to be a difficult question. On close examination however, it is found that this is essentially a question of the value of information and it is reasonably well documented in various other industries. Hubbard (2010), in chapter 7 ?Measuring the Value of Information?, dealt with exactly this type of problem. The value of information is the reduced risk of an investment and opportunity loss. The methods Hubbard developed can be applied to estimate the value of automated mineralogy, as well as metallurgical test work, which also produces information that reduces the risk of investment. This paper first introduces Hubbard?s theory on the value of information and how to measure it. It then applies his methods to estimate the value of automated mineralogy, using Anglo Platinum?s fine grinding project as an example. In this case, the value of automated mineralogy includes the reduction in investment risk worth US$ 62.5million, in project rejection worth US$197 million and in opportunity loss worth US$320 million. In the end, a general model is developed to allow the simulation of the value of automated mineralogy in different mining operations constrained by different parameters.

Production quarry blasts in three rock types were photographed with a high-speed camera. Analysis of the films showed that step increases sometimes occur in the horizontal velocity of the broken rock. These step velocity increases were observed only in the first foot or so of rock movement. This observation indicates that the gaseous products of the explosion do additional work on the rock after it is crushed and cracked by the initial compressive-stress pulse and the reflected tensile-stress pulse. The observed initial fly-rock velocity is compared with the calculated fly-rock velocity for reflection spalling. A mechanism possibly causing the velocity increases is discussed. INTRODUCTION When a small concentrated charge of explosive is detonated at the bottom of a drill hole near a free surface, two modes of rock failure have been observed; both are associated with the stress pulse generated in the rock by the detonating explosive. The first mode of failure is the crushing and radial tensile cracking associated with the initial passage of the compressive-stress pulse as it propagates outward from the explosion. This type of rock failure is usually confined to the immediate vicinity of the charge hole. The second mode of failure is the tangential and radial tensile cracking associated with the tensile-stress pulse that is reflected from the free surface. This mode of failure is commonly called scabbing or spalling and has been shown to be a primary cause of rock failure in crater formation at one free surface. (3).4

The Bureau of Milts studied repetitive batch electrowinning of molybdenum from molybdic oxide ) to determine the effects upon the electrolyte life, purity of metal product , and overall cell performance. The electrolyte consisted of 54.0 weight-percent sodium tetraborate (Na2B407), 23.6 weight-percent sodium chloride (NaC1), 14.9 weight-percent sodium fluoride (NaF), and 7.5 weight-percent Mo03. The feed materials were pure and technical-grade Mo03. Electrolysis was conducted at l,000° C in a graphite cell in an atmosphere of air and carbon oxides. Electrolyte degradation did not occur during repetitive winning of molybdenum from pure Mo03 in an 8-day (5,400-ampere-hour) period of operation. Electrowon metal contained <0.1 percent total impurities. The electrode configuration is a key factor in the direct conversion of technical-grade Mo03 to metal by repetitive cyclic electrolysis. The best configuration found was a cathodic crucible and a central anode. Metal purity of 99.8 percent and a current efficiency of 91 percent were maintained until the combined impurity buildup the electrolyte reached 4.7 percent silicon, l.0 percent aluminum, and 0.6 percent iron. One pound of molybdenum was produced per 1.5 pounds of solvent salts employed. About 25 percent of the initial NaCl and NaF contents of the electrolyte were lost owing to volatilization and crucible penetration.

"Nickel ores are divided into two types: sulfide deposits and lateritic deposits. About 60% of nickel resources are found in laterite ore, while the remaining 40% is contained in sulfide ore. Laterite ore is usually processed via pyrometallurgical means or through hydrometallurgical techniques that include acid leaching and metal value recovery from solution. In this study, copper and nickel adsorption by Dowex M4195 ion exchange resin from an acidic sulfate liquor was investigated. The acidic sulfate liquor was collected from an atmospheric leaching process (AL) of laterite ore. Ion exchange experiments were conducted in a batch system by varying parameters such as pH, time, metal concentration and temperature. Initially, mono-elemental synthetic solutions of nickel and copper were used in the experiments and then a synthetic solution simulating AL liquor was tested. Test results showed that the resin exhibited high selectivity towards copper and nickel, however, a high concentration of iron in the synthetic AL solution interfered with the recovery of nickel and cobalt by the resin.INTRODUCTION Nickel is one of the most important industrial metals in the world. It is widely used in industrial applications, such as the production of stainless steel, magnets, electroplating and special alloys (Dizge et al., 2009). The main sources of industrial nickel production are sulphide deposits; only 40% of industrial production uses lateritic ores. However, it is estimated that 60% of global nickel resources are found in nickel laterite deposits (Kuck, 2016). Since industrial nickel demand continues to grow, the development of new technologies for the extraction of nickel from laterite ores has become an interesting research topic (Agatzini-Leonardou, 2009)."

Stawell Gold Mines Pty Ltd operates two underground decline mines within the township of Stawell. An active exploration program and commitment by owners to improving the ore reserves has led to an improved mine life and reduced operating costs since the purchase of the operation by Mining Project Investors and Pittston Mineral Ventures in late-1992. Over the past six years of operation a cumulative 1 150 000 ounces of gold have been added to the mineral inventory. An improved geological understanding of the orebody has evolved over time increasing the ore reserves and allowing the development of long-term plans for the mines future. This has enabled important capital decisions to be made providing the impetus for improved productivity and thereby reduced operating costs. Co-operative mine planning and mine geology utilising best practice geological systems have enabled the effective extraction of a structurally complex and mineralogically varied deposit within a rural Victorian township. Detailed metallurgical research has improved the function of an aged and poorly designed circuit to boost the mill capacity whilst also improving the metallurgical recovery. The combination of metallurgical expertise and an understanding of the geological setting enable an effective control of metallurgical recovery.

Continuous improvement through teamwork and innovation is needed in the following areas to thrive amidst worldwide competition: 1) Maximization of the in-place value of ore. 2) Research and development to yield new processes and products. 3) Safe productivity. 4) Involvement in legislative processes. 5) Wellness programs to lower health care costs.

In the course of the development of the Report of the World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED) in the 1980s an expression was introduced in the public discussion on environment and development that influenced the international and national policies of the last 20 years in all areas: sustainable development. The UN decided in 1992 to implement a program with the Agenda 21 which contains the demand for developing indicators for sustainable development. In this context an indicator is understood as a quantitative or qualitative measure that can be measured or described throughout time and which moreover is able to depict the current status and changes. In order to enable for a simple holistic assessment of sustainable development, highly aggregated indicators are required, which integrate the criteria identified as relevant within a framework to be defined. In the presented paper, sustainability indicators for the mining industry are developed that account for the allowances of the sustainable development concept and the Agenda 21. The indicators are quantifiable and traceable through time so that developments can be traced and assessed. Furthermore, the indicators account for the multidimensional aspect of sustainable development. They are designed to allow for the integration of several dimensions in one indicator. The premises that are underlying the development of the indicators are the minimisation of negative impacts on the environment and society while simultaneously considering the maximisation of social and economic factors. Moreover, the participative momentum that is part of the sustainability idea is safeguarded in explicitly integrating the social acceptance of certain measures into the assessment. The indicators presented are based on the logical combination of statements through the use of Boolean algebra. Starting with basic statements for which the logical value is oriented on the sustainability paradigm, complex multidimensional statements can be constructed and assessed. &nbsp;

"Fording Coal Ltd. is now in its fifth year of a 15-year contract to supply 3 million long tons of clean coal per annum to its Japanese steel-making customers. The mine employs both conventional truck-shovel and unconventional ""walking"" dragline coal mining techniques in multiple-seam pits. This paper describes the present and future application of the 60-cu.-yd dragline and truck-shovel pre-stripping fleet in 1•ecovering 5- to 40-footthick coal seams in mountainous terrain. Deep blastholes, coal flow demands, spring ""run-off"", seam and inter-seam thrust faulting, limited seam outcrop data and regional faulting are a few of the problems encountered in this application. The author discusses these problems and their solutions as applied at Fording Coal Ltd."

Vibrating screens play an important role in the dry classification circuit of Gol-e-Gohar iron ore processing plant. This circuit was designed to classify the autogenous mill discharge and produce a suitable feed, with K80 about 450 ¦m, for dry magnetic separators. Three parallel vibrating screens produce more than 50 per cent of the separatorÆs feed. The efficiency of the magnetic separator is greatly affected by feed size distribution. In this work, the JKSimMet 5.1 software was used as an analysing tool to assess the flow rates and USIM PAC3 software as the simulation tool to control and optimise the vibrating screens. Samples were collected and the circuit was mass balanced. Then the vibrating screen was simulated and adjustment parameters such as cut-point, bypass and imperfection factor were determined. The product streams of vibrating screens can also be predicted.

"Peñasquito is a polymetallic deposit containing gold, silver, lead, and zinc. The operation is currently the largest producer of gold in Mexico. Over the next few years, the process flowsheet will be expanded beyond the flotation of lead and zinc to include flotation of pyrite from zinc tails and subsequent leaching of the pyrite concentrate. This paper outlines mineralogical leach characterization that has been carried out to improve the understanding of the complex hosting of gold and silver minerals in the ore. Organic carbon that is present in the ore can have an impact on flotation and leaching. Mineralogical techniques used to characterize this deleterious component of the ore are introduced.INTRODUCTION Goldcorp’s Peñasquito operation is located in the Mexican state of Zacatecas, approximately 200 km from the city of Zacatecas as shown in Figure 1. Peñasquito has been in operation since 2009 and is currently Mexico’s largest gold mine. Mining is carried out by open-pit methods, with oxide ore proceeding to a heap leach facility and sulfide ore treated in the sulfide processing plant.The processing capacity of the sulfide plant is 130,000 tonnes of ore per day and in 2016 production amounted to 450,000 ounces of gold, 17.6 million ounces of silver, 109 million lb of contained lead, and 263 million lb of contained zinc in lead and zinc concentrates. GEOLOGY The Peñasquito deposit is hosted in and adjacent to two breccia pipes; Peñasco and Breccia Azul. The two breccia pipes are branches of a larger intrusive-related complex, which is hosted in the sedimentary Caracol formation as illustrated in Figure 2. The regional geology is dominated by Mesozoic sedimentary rocks which comprise a thick series of marine sediments deposited during the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. A 2 km thick sequence of carbonaceous and calcareous siltstones and interbedded sandstones is underlain by a 1.5 to 2 km thick limestone sequence (Goldcorp Inc., 2015)."

Electric logs and cuttings records from Zechstein 3 and 4 strata in boreholes in the British Sector of have been interpreted in the light of numerous cored boreholes through this sequence in north-east England. This interpretation shows that potash salts in the two cycles are thickest and most consistent in a belt 20 to 40 km wide parallel with and a few kilometres from the present basin margin, and are here generally similar in grade to those known onshore. The potash ores in both cycles are mainly of sylvinite in onshore areas, the layered Upper the Southern North Sea Potash of the fourth cycle being rather less variable but generally of appreciably lower average grade than the Boulby Potash of the third cycle. Potash salts in both cycles are highly variable in thickness and grade in basin centre areas where they have been grossly affected by diapirism of the thick second cycle salts.

This paper presents a rock mechanics investigation of the time-dependent behavior of the rock immediately surrounding the excavation in a hypothetical one-entry coal mine based on the geology of the Illinois coalfields Research in the area of time-dependency is almost nonexistent and, therefore, this research was performed to make inroads into this neglected research area. Numerical analysis of a typical one-entry coal mine in an Illinois basin was performed using the commercial finite difference program FLAC3D. The immediate roof of the coal entry was assumed to be a shale formation. Shale in other formations has shown a tendency to creep with time. Therefore, in this study the authors modeled the shale in the roof using time-dependent characteristics. The input properties were taken from laboratory creep tests performed on shale. Model runs were performed at different stages, mimicking the progressive excavation of the entry. The model results showed that stresses in the roof attained the limit of yielding. Using Mohr-Coulomb failure criteria, potential zones of failure were also predicted. The results showed that the current computational capacities are sufficient to explore this previously uncharted territory of ground control.
