This report documents the research efforts that were undertaken to design, install and test noise abatement devices for use on off-highway haul trucks operating in surface mines. The objective of the program was to reduce the environmental noise from haul trucks. The noise reduction devices that were developed utilized existing technology and were tested on a 50-ton haul truck. The efforts emphasized the reduction of noise emitted from the engine compartment which included the use of side shields, sound absorbing material, improved radiator shroud design, and a modulating clutch fan. Noise tests were conducted using modified SAE test procedures for measuring sound levels around a stationary and moving machine, and inside of the operators compartment. Test results showed a maximum of 4 dB(A) reduction measured 16 feet from the truck. Interior cab noise was reduced 6 dB(A) with the windows and vents closed.

The design and installation of a major on-line stores and purchasing system, with built-in maintenance reporting and plant register capabilities, needs more than just close attention to computer design details. When the system must be available almost 24 hours a day to a number of mine stores sites, and is used by a variety of mining staff including engineers and stores clerks, as well as by remote purchasing and office staff, then simplicity of use, availability, fast response times, and other human factors become vital. Critical aspects include easy to use screen design, involving a change from the traditional hierarchical menu system, and fallback and recovery to the last transaction. Business, people and systems objectives need to be established at the preliminary design stage, so that results can be measured and corrective action taken. The amount and type of user involvement and training, at all stages from initial design to systems tuning, has a major effect on people wanting to use the system. Active user participation in systems design, data definition and collection, and use of relevant training material is needed. Project management and design problems can arise in working with database oriented computer staff, and certain design features are found useful in ensuring a responsive, robust overall system.

The Gatineau shaft described in this paper was an excavation of about 38 m diameter and 21 m depth constructed in Gatineau, Quebec, across the Ottawa River just north of Ottawa, Ontario. A large sewage lift pumping station-was to be constructed in this excavation. Subcontractor for the shaft excavation and initial support was Beaver Underground Structures Ltd., of Dorval, Quebec. Mr. William C. Cox of Beaver conceived the idea for the support system used in this excavation, and was responsible for the construction activities. Initial analysis and design concepts for the lining system were developed by Mr. Ronald E. Heuer. Detailed lining design and construction monitoring were the responsibility of Mr. Jean-Michel Loignon. Geologic conditions indicated by two borings within the shaft area are illustrated in Fig. 1. The shaft excavation would be in the sensitive Leda silty clay. The clay is of stiff to very stiff consistency, with an insitu vane shear strength averaging about 115 KPa (2400 psf) and a reported low value of about 87 KPa (1820 psf). Low strength values were from the middle of the clay layer, with higher strengths at the top and bottom. Average shear strength at the level of the base of the excavation was about 137 KPa (2860 psf). Remolded vane shear strength averaged about 20 KPa (420 psf), with a reported low of 13 KPa (270 psf). Based upon average strength values, the clay sensitivity is 5.8. The clay has an average water content of 53% (range 43 to 66%), which is near its liquid limit (average 56%). The clay unit weight is about 1760 kg/m3 (110 pcf). Underlying the shaft site at shallow depth is limestone bedrock within which the piezometric head is approximately equal to the original ground surface elevation. No mineral resources were identified during the investigation of the White Cloud-Boulder RARE II area. Only a few claims have been located in the area and only two workings were found. However, there has been considerable exploration and mining activity near the RARE II area. Sand and gravel resources are abundant but similar deposits occur closer to market areas. There are no known coal, oil, or gas deposits. Most of the RARE II area is underlain by volcanic rocks. The likeliest host rocks for metallic minerals are the metasedimentary rocks exposed in the south part of the area; there is potential for zinc and silver resources at a prospect in that part. Traces of scheelite and powellite were observed in the Kent Peak-Ryan Peak area along hair-line fractures in calcareous country rock. While no significant concentrations of the minerals were found, their presence, a northwest alignment of prospects with similar deposits, and an abundance of dikes near the deposits, suggest that the intrusive system (Summit Creek stock) exposed near the head of Little Fall Creek may extend to the northwest under the RARE II area.

The large volume of water used in coal preparation plants makes water recycling a necessity. Economical cleaning of dirty water usually requires flocculation with an efficient organic polyelectrolyte. This paper discusses identification of optimum flocculant systems. Supporting laboratory data with on-site tests and full-scale field trails supplies information necessary for matching the polymer to the plant.

The persistent requirement for methods and equipment capable of detecting hazardous anomalies in advance of underground mining has led to the development by the U.S. Bureau of Mines of a directional radar probe. The probe operates from boreholes drilled from the surface into the underground region to be mined. The engineering model radar was completed in early 1982 and field demonstration tests were performed in May of that year at a selected coal mine. Preliminary in-situ electromagnetic tests were performed at several candidate coal mines to evaluate the radio-frequency characteristics of the coal. A coal mine in New Mexico was selected on the basis of low EM propagation losses in the coal and the presence of an extensive coal seam displacing fault as a radar target. The borehole radar was operated in two vertical boreholes which intersected the coal seam at approximately 25 and 40 feet from the fault interface. Radar reflections from the coal/ rock interface were detected in both tests. Underground tests in a horizontal borehole in the coal were less successful because of interfering reflections. Additional borehole-to-borehole tests were performed with a separate ground penetrating electromagnetic system to obtain radar range calibration data. The coal was found to be bounded by very lossy roof and floor sandstone and shale while propagation through the coal seam was obtained at distances up to 175 feet between test boreholes. Coal seam continuity was indicated by the hole-to-hole experiments through a section of the seam previously thought to be completely cut off by the fault.

The United States on a daily basis no consumes about 15MM barrels (2.38 x 106m3) of oil; 5MM (0.79 x 106 m3) of this is imported. This compares tai a daily consumption of 18MM (2.86 x 106 m3) in 1980 when we imported 8MM (1.27 x 106 m3). We are producing the 10MM barrels (1.59 x 106 m3 ) of conventional oil at home from what amounts to just 2% of our domestic energy reserves. Nearly 90% of our total domestic energy reserves occurs in solid forms such as coal, oil shale, and tar sands; this is more than enough to meet our needs for the next 100 years. Worldwide, oil shale is second only to coal as a potential source of energy and the U.S. has approximately one-half of the world oil shale reserves which average over 25 gallons per ton (10.43 x 10-2 L/kg). Since the United States has immense oil shale resources, including some of the richest in the world, and since oil shale produces a superior transportation fuel, it would seem logical that the U.S. would be prudently developing this domestic resource. Unfortunately, despite over 50 years of research and a number of false starts, there is not a commercial shale oil industry in place today. There are a number of recurring roadblocks which have hindered private industry's efforts to develop oil shale and we will look at some of these.

[Portland cement is a product made from a combination of limestone and argillaceous material which would supply the necessary amounts f calcium, silica, alumina and iron to form cementious compounds when fired at high temperatures. The resulting mixture, usually around 80% limestone and 20% argillaceous, is ground nine (80% -200 mesh), blended and then fired1 (2600-2700°F) to produce a cement clinker from which the final cement product is produced by grinding. The argillaceous component can be shale, clay, slate or other sources of the individual components of silica, alumina and iron. This paper deals with a case where a clay component was under consideration. The planned Plant site was to be located at a well defined limestone deposit. When it came to the argillaceous component, the nearest uniform deposit of clay was over 50 miles away and would require purchase of land or clay from the owner plus the daily delivery costs to the plant site. This situation made the plant site economically questionable. It was decided that a local clay deposit, which was available at the plant site but was orginally not considered due to lack of chemical uniformity and its high free silica content, would be reconsidered.]

Stratabound/stratiform and remobilised mineralisation have been recognised as the two dominant styles of mineralisation which constitute the Broken Hill ore deposit. Recognition of prospective sites for accumulation of ore depends on understanding the heterogeneity of the ore environment and the distribution of the two styles of mineralisation. The internal stratigraphy of the Broken Hill ore deposit and its enveloping rocks, is described, and a generalised stratigraphic setting of the stratiform mineralisation is outlined. Fhiphasis is placed on the existence of closely-spaced sub-basins as potential sites for ore accumulation close to the Broken Hill ore deposit. This paper presents methods and results of environmental planning conducted for a proposed coal and iron ore transshipment terminal which would be located on reclaimed land west of Lisbon, Portugal. Oceanographic, navigational, marine, structural, material handling, and financial studies of the terminal were conducted along with the environmental analyses. However, because of the proximity of the terminal to heavily used recreational resources, residential areas, and biologically valuable habitat, anticipating and reducing the environmental effects of the terminal to minimum levels was a very important part of the overall project. The results of the study indicate that even the impacts associated with worst-case conditions would be acceptable because of appropriate pollution control measures and planning.

Some design and feasibility studies have been made into possible methods of economic recovery of sulphur from smelter gases emitted at Western Mining Corporation's Nickel smelter at KalgoorIie in Western Australia. The smelter discharges some 330 000 tonne/yr of sulphur dioxide in a stream of approximately 6 per cent by volume of S02.Three possible recovery methods have been considered:1. The manufacture of sulphuric acid using the contact process.2. The concentration of sulphur dioxide to a pure form using dimethyl aniline as an absorbing medium.3. The reduction to elemental sulphur using natural gas as the reducing agent.Design studies were carried out by final year chemical engineering undergraduate students at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) in 1981 under the supervision of the author and other teaching staff of the chemical engineering department. These studies indicate that sulphuric acid manufacture is the economically preferred recovery route.Markets for sulphuric acid include several potential mineral processing applications and the established fertiliser industry.Sulphuric acid is currently manufactured in a number of plants located at coastal regions of Western Australia using imported sulphur. The sulphuric acid is then used for superphosphate or titanium dioxide pigment manufacture at adjacent plants.The possibility is considered of manufacturing superphosphate at Kalgoorlie from locally produced acid obtained from the smelter gases and from phosphate rock railed to the site from the coast. The advantages of such a scheme include improved scale and technology of operation compared with some existing coastal operations, use of a waste material to replace imported sulphur, and avoidance of costs and hazards associated with railing large quantities of sulphuric acid.

The mushroom-shaped Minghu power cavern located in central Taiwan is 21.2 m (W) by 40.5 m (H) by 127.2 m (L) and is designed to house 4 units of power generating-pumping equipment with a total capacity of 1,000 MW. This paper presents an introduction to the geological conditions at the cavern site; the rock mechanical tests undertaken; the design approach adopted; the construction method and sequence followed; and the instrumentation provided in the roof arch to monitor the behavior of the surrounding rocks. The measured data collected from the embedded instruments will be compared with those obtained from theoretical analyses and presented in this paper. Several technical problems encountered during the construction stage are covered and the solutions of these problems are also described therein.

Almost 100 sedimentation ponds were conceptually designed for a large surface mining study area in northeast Texas. An approximate procedure was developed to economically estimate construction quantities in order to predict surface water control costs. This procedure utilized site-specific empirical relationships developed from detailed analyses on a representative number of proposed sedimentation ponds. Use of these equations provided earthwork volumes, and spillway pipe lengths. The procedure developed for this study is presented along with the results of a verification analysis.

Saxonvale mine is a multi bench open pit coal mine developed to its Stage I capacity of 1.75 Mt/y of run of mine coal. Detailed engineering studies for the mine commenced in April 1980, approval to proceed with the development was received in July 1980 and first coal shipments were made in April 1982. The engineering and project management of the mine development was carried out by BHP Engineering. This paper outlines the design and site administration for the development and describes both the organisation structure and the control and administration procedures used by BHP Engineering to ensure that the project was Successful.

Under a cooperative agreement, the Bureau of Mines, Magma Copper Co., and ASARCO, Inc., tested backfilled ground support systems at t.wo elevations in Magma's San Manuel, AZ, mine. The tests were mainly for guidance in designing the loading crosscuts of the new ASARCO Sacaton underground mine. Two-piece, wide-flange steel sets for 8-by 8-ft (2.44-by 2.44-m) and 11-by II-ft (3.36-by 3.36-m) openings were designed. Set spacing was 3 ft (0.91 m) and 5 ft (1.52 m), respectively. After erection, the sets were lagged with various test materials. The void between the lining and the ground was backfilled with sand and pea gravel. Instruments measuring strain (used to determine changes in stress) were placed beneath the sets and in the backfill. Results indicate the backfilled sets in the smaller drift (2315 grizzly level, panels 6 and 7) of 8-by 8-ft (2.44-by 2.44-m) cross section are a viable permanent support system, lower in cost than the standard formed concrete. Results are inconclusive in 2615 grizzly level, panels 5 and 6, where wide-flange steel sets were used with 5-ft (1.52-m) long concrete gob lagging of T-design.

The Los Alamos National Laboratory executed 19 intermediate scale cratering experiments in oil shale at the Colony Mine in Garfield County, Colorado. These experiments have led to a better under- standing of fracture characteristics and fragmentation of & - oil shale by use of a conventional high explosive. Geologic site characterization included detailed mapping, coring, and sample analyses. Site-specific geology was observed to be a major influence on the resulting crater geometry. The joint patterns at the experimental site frequently defined the final crater symmetry. Secondary influences included vugs, lithology changes, and grade fluctuations in the local stratigraphy. Most experiments, in both the rib and floor, were conducted to obtain data to investigate the fragmentation results within the craters. The rubble was screened for fragment- size distributions. Geologic features in proximity to the explosive charge had minimal effect on the rubble due to the overpowering effect of the detonation. However, these same features became more influential on the fracture and rubble characteristics with greater distances from the shothole. Postshot cores revealed a direct relationship between the grade of the oil shale and its susceptibility to fracturing. The Colony Mine experiments have demonstrated the significant role of geology in high explosive/oil shale interaction. It is probable that this role will have to be considered for larger applications to blast patterns and potential problems in retort stability in the future of oil shale development.

Hydraulic coal mining is being successfully practiced in China, U.S.S.R., Japan and Canada and in each country, excepting Japan where suitable sites are not available, the system is being expanded to either existing conventional mines or new mines. Productivity levels and economics at these mines are in all cases better than the productivities achieved in conventional mines in the same general localities. In the U.S.S.R. face productivities approaching 50 tons per man shift have been reported while in Canada the latest statistics show average face area productivity levels are in the region of 200 tons per man shift production monitor. In the United States hydraulic mining has not been actively pursued to the same degree and consequently there are no full scale hydraulic coal mines in operation or construction. Because many of the coal measures in the Western U.S.A. are generally somewhat similar to those being successfully hydraulic mined in Western Canada and parts of Siberia it is realistic to believe that successful hydraulic mines can be designed and developed in the Western U.S.A. Particularly if the vast technological base that already exists is used to improve on other people's ideas, systems, methods and equipment.

A rock classification for drilling and boring is presented covering most equipment types and providing an estimation of the key parameters for operation, such as thrust and speed, and of performance such as penetration rate and bit life. Drilling and boring are significant and integral aspects of both the mining and heavy construction industries. Together these constitute over 20% of the G.N.P. Drilling and boring represent the most arduous mechanical processes performed in industry. Their misapplication quickly leads to equipment destruction, hazards, and to major delays. The classification is unified in two ways: 1) for a particular rock class several parameters can be estimated, 2) the classification integrates most excavating activities (i.e. digging, ripping and even blasting), and is derived from ground control. The rock classification provides a job property, based on fundamental and index properties, which yields quick and rough estimates of vital information. However it does not obviate the need for a more thorough analysis, and maintaining field records. BACKGROUND In order to adequately describe a drilling operation the conditions, activity, and equipment must be characterized. Of these the major independent variables are the conditions. Conditions focus on the geologic mass and also consider whether the site is surface or underground. A great deal of attention has been directed toward the complexities and inadequacies of exploration and pre-bid geotechnical information for heavy construction projects, differing site conditions, and the adversary relationships which generally develop as a result. The adversary position has been maintained at all cost. The solution is simple, if not easy. The solution requires strict and equal adherence to given principles by all parties involved, throughout the life of the project, from conception to completion. It is necessary to review and redefine some basic concepts, without value judgements, from a context of getting the job done. In a recreated context, the role of truth, judgement, responsibility, and integrity, in exploration, engineering design, construction estimating, and project construction, will be examined. It is suggested that anticipated geotechnical conditions be defined unconditionally. The alternative choice is to give the bidder the opportunity of making the interpretive judgements based on geotechnical data. Similarly, a unilateral method of establishing encountered conditions that are agreeable to both owner and contractor, must be outlined prior to contracting. As anticipated and encountered conditions are firmly and accurately established, significant differences can evaluated based upon limitations specified in the contract documents. Impact of differences on project costs can be fixed by pre-defined methods.

This Bureau of Mines report presents a cost estimate of the Bayer process, which is used for virtually all cell-grade alumina production. The report will serve as a reference point to determine the economic merits of processes that have evolved from Bureau of Mines investigations on technology for producing alumina from domestic nonbauxitic raw materials. The Bayer process involves dissolving the alumina present in bauxite in a caustic solution at high temperature and pressure. After the un- dissolved impurities are removed, the solution is seeded to produce an alumina trihydrate precipitate. This precipitate is filtered, washed, and calcined to produce the cell-grade alumina product. This cost estimate is for a plant producing 1 million tons of alumina per year. The estimated operating cost is approximately $250 per ton of alumina.
