The interface between precious metal miners and gold refiners has been an uneasy interface over the years. The reasons for this interface and its apparent uneasiness and lack of trust include technical factors, economies of scale, and cultural differences. Technical factors take two forms. First, concentrates, precipitates and sponge produced at the mine site are notoriously difficult to sample and a non-representative sample can be the cause of misunderstanding and distrust. Dore, however, is homogeneous and can be correctly sampled and analyzed. Second, the technology and chemistry of fine gold and silver production is complex and quite different from that of dore production. Most mining companies are content not to be involved with additional processing steps.

Current mining regulations require revegetation in reclaiming surface nines. Excessive soil compaction can be an impediment to successful revegetation in poor soil conditions common to Eastern coal nine sites. A field study was performed to determine the bulk densities of soils that had been spread by either bulldozers or scrapers at a strip nine site. Moisture-density relationships for the soils were determined from the field samples. These were compared with stockpile samples compacted by the Standard Proctor compaction test. The results of the study indicate that the degree of compaction could be lessened through proper soil handling procedures.

"Madawaska Mines Limited, incorporated in 1975 is the successor to Faraday Uranium Mines Limited. The history of the latter's mine development and corporate changes are outlined. This paper describes the geology of the Bancroft area and the rock types found in the mine, particularly the pegmatite which is the host rock for the uranium. The structure, mineralogy and distribution of the ore shoots are described with the method of grade control and mine development. The paper concludes with a summary of the production and mineral reserves.Location, Access, and PropertyMadawaska Mines Limited is located in Faraday Township, Hastings County, Ontario. The mine is in the N.T.S. quadrant 31 F/ 4, Bancroft sheet and near 46 degrees 01 minute latitude, 77 degrees 46 minutes longitude. The mine is one-half mile north of Highway 28, five miles (8 km) west of Bancroft, and is accessible by various highways from Toronto, Ottawa, Peterborough, and Belleville. (Fig. 1). A landing strip for small aircraft is located at the northwestern edge of Bancroft. Bancroft is a modern community with a population of 2,400. The company has the mineral rights to 2982 acres (1207 hectares) surrounding the mine workings and plant which are situated in the north parts of Lots 16 and 17, Concession XI, Faraday Township."

Kidston Gold Mine is a 3.5 million tonnes per year operation located 280 kilometres west of Townsville, Queensland. Kidston's ore body consists of 44.3 million tonnes graded at 1.79 grams per tonne gold and 2.22 grams per tonne silver. Full production commenced in March, 1985. During the remainder of 1985, Kidston milled 3.77 million tonnes of ore and produced 213,614 ounces of gold.The ore is comprised of granodiorite, polymictic and volcanic breccias. The degree of oxidation of the rock influences the milling capacity and therefore determines the cut-off grade; ore is categorised as oxide, transition and fresh. The milling rates are 15,400, 12,000 and 9,600 tonnes per day for oxide, transition and fresh ore respectively.The ore is treated in a conventional cyanidation/ carbon-in-pulp plant (CIP). The plant consists of a primary crusher, semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) and ball mills, leach circuit and carbon-in-pulp circuit. Carbon stripping and dore smelting are done on site. The major difference between the Kidston plant and other Australian CIP plants is that a cyclone separation and washing circuit rejects half of the dry tonnage as a sand tail prior to CIP treatment. This difference allows the CIP circuit at Ki.dston to be smaller and makes the CIP less sensitive to the grind circuit product size.

"The Pronto Mine located at the east end of Lake Lauzon, Long Township, some 12 miles east of Blind River is of historic note being the discovery locality and the first producing mine of the Elliot Lake uranium camp. Radioactive bedrock was discovered in 1949, a commercial deposit was verified in 1953 and production commenced in 1955. Production continued to April 1960: total tons milled 2,264,404 from which 4,643,835 pounds U,O, were recovered at a recovered grade of 2.05 pounds U3O8 per short ton.The orebody is in a bed of pyritic quartz pebble conglomerate at the base of the Matinenda Formation of the Elliot Lake Group of the Huronian Supergroup. The rocks strike east and dip 15 degrees to 20 degrees south and unconformably overlie Early Precambrian granite, the upper surface of which is marked by a regolith. Several diabase dykes cut the orebody which is also affected by albite, chlorite, and carbonate-rich alterations. To the south the orebody is cut by a fault. The orebody is 6to 10 feet but locally 10 to 15 feet thick, has a strike length of 3,500 feet and extends down dip for 3,600 feet to a depth of 1,000feet. GENERAL STATEMENT Data frequently can be collected by several dif¬ferent methods. The method required for the nec¬essary precision for inflow prediction to mines should be selected and other methods avoided. Pre¬cision monitoring or measuring techniques fre¬quently require more time, expertise, and expense in their implementation that may not be justifiable. The temporal distribution of the data needs also may dictate the method used for data collection. Continuous recording devices may be required for time sensitive data whereas point measurements of other parameters may be adequate. Data needs will vary as the hydrologic investigation proceeds. In¬itial data needs may require only a qualitative col¬lection of data such as the areal distribution of precipitation. Subsequent data needs may require the measurement of ground water levels to the near¬est hundredth of a foot. Data requirements can be difficult to fulfill for ground water systems. This is particularly true for anisotropic, heterogeneous hydrostratigraphic units since the hydrogeologic parameters vary both ver¬tically and areally. Techniques exist for determining the storage characteristics of both unconfined and confined hydrostratigraphic units but these pro¬cedures require the installation of multiple wells in the same unit which may be impractical. Specific tests are discussed subsequently that permit the determination of vertical hydraulic conductivity. Data collected from field procedures or tests are generally preferred to laboratory derived data. This is especially true for hydrogeologic parameters such as hydraulic conductivity. SURFACE WATER SYSTEMS Precipitation Precipitation data can be collected from sources that maintain a historical record. The US Depart¬ment of Commerce, National Oceanic and Atmos¬pheric Administration (NOAA), maintains weather observation stations across the country. Such a sta¬tion frequently can be found near a proposed mine site but the type of weather data collected varies from station to station. Fortunately, precipitation data are collected ubiquitously. The data collected by NOAA can be purchased for the area of interest in the form of monthly and annual tabulations. Private weather stations constitute a second source of precipitation data. Existing data usually are analyzed by one of three methods. The station average method merely sums the depth of precipitation at each station and divides the sum by the number of stations as fol¬lows: [ ] where Pavg is the average precipitation (L), P, is the depth of precipitation at station i (L), and N is the total number of stations. This method is applicable where there are a relatively large number of stations uniformly distributed across the area (Hjelnfelt and Cassidy, 1975, pp. 71-72). The second method, called the Thiessen poly¬gon method, weights the precipitation at each sta¬tion in direct proportion to the area it represents without consideration of topography. The stations are plotted on a map and perpendicular bisectors are drawn on the lines connecting the stations. The polygons formed by these bisectors constitute the area that the precipitation for that station repre¬sents. The overall precipitation can be calculated with the following equation:

The techniques developed should provide a useful tool, not only during the initial formulation of a suitable bolting plan for a new section, but also for periodic check¬ing on the utilization factor of hardware installed in the roof. Indications are that with present practice, utilization seldom exceeds 507.. Retro-fittable bolter equipment now available (FCBS?) allows doubling of the utilization factor in many cases. We are also introducing a computer pro¬gram based on the material outlined in this paper. This program can save a great deal of time in examining the real effect of implementing alternate bolting plans or using different installation techniques. It allows fine-tuning of bolt lengths, spacing and installation tension to mini¬mize roof support cost, while maximizing safe life of the mine opening. We have developed a procedure which allows easy, site-specific quantification of the need for reinforcement of a mine roof. The concept is based on the forma¬tion of a direct link between theory and empirical data to custom-fit each mine section. In its simplest form, the proce¬dure requires only recording of roof bolt torques in a sample working place (16 to 25 bolts) several times during the first week or so after initial bolting. The way in which the torque pattern changes during this time can reveal whether or not the bolts carry enough tension to maintain stability in that specific roof. From the same data, the nature of the anchorage horizon is derived. Specifically, shale or limestone can be distinguished from sandstone. If the procedure is repeated a few times (within the same mine section) with different bolt installation tensions, we can numerically characterize the roof in terms of one single value: an "effective angle of internal friction". This number can then serve to calculate trade-offs in bolting plan design, such as bolt length, bolt spacing and optimum bolt tension. Additional refinement is possible if a sagmeter is installed in the sample work¬ing place being monitored and if bolt anchorage capacity is determined. The lat¬ter can be done automatically on each bolt as it is being installed, using a system we developed and patented. Alternately, a number of pull tests could be performed. Using the sagmeter, bolt torque and anchor¬age data, it is possible to project the safe life of the supported opening. The details of the procedures described apply specifically to tensioned roof bolting, but a brief discussion paints the way for a similar analysis of full-column resin bolting also.

The Bureau of Mines has conducted a rock mechanics study to monitor deformation of near-seam strata above a longwall panel in the Pittsburgh Coalbed. The primary goal was to determine the height of caving immediately behind advancing longwall face supports. This study, although site specific, provides information on the caving mechanism associated with longwall extractions so that strata behavior and its interaction with longwall face supports can be better understood. Two holes were drilled, approximately 550 ft apart along the center line of a longwall panel, from the surface to the coalbed approximately 650 ft below. Various downhole geotechnical instruments were used to monitor strata deformation. In addition, surface elevation surveys were conducted to differentiate between surface and subsurface activity. This report discusses the caving characteristics of the strata as the longwall panel approached and passed beneath the boreholes. Physical property data are also presented to demonstrate the relationship between caving behavior and local geology. Data show that immediate caving of strata above the longwall face occurred at a height less than 23.5 ft and that strata behavior above longwall extractions is highly dependent upon lithology, with major disturbances occurring at weak lithologic zones.

To decrease the potential for fine coal waste slurry impoundment failures, the Bureau of Mines investigated a new disposal technique. The fine coal waste slurry is rapidly thickened (i.e., dewatered) and deposited on a slightly sloping surface. To accomplish rapid dewatering, a chemical flocculation system using polymers was developed to treat the fine coal waste slurry stream. The fine solids formed flocs, settled from suspension, and rapidly released excess water. During the last 5 days of the field test, slurry flowing at rates from 498 to 675 gal/min with a specific gravity range of 1.15 to 1.33 was successfully treated and dewatered. During this period, untreated slurry had an average moisture content of 227.4 pct (30.7 wt pct solids). The effectiveness of the dewatering system was determined by monitoring the moisture content of the deposited waste with respect to time. Sixty-five hours after ending the field test the average moisture content was 54.9 pct (64.5 wt pct solids); 68 days after the field test the average moisture content was 28.8 pct (78.0 wt pct solids).

The Bureau of Mines equipped a longwall shearer with a water-jet-assisted mechanical cutting system to determine the effect of the high-pressure sprays on machine performance, airborne dust levels generated, and size of particles formed. Testing was conducted on a simu-lated coal block (coalcrete) while cutting at a water pressure of 190 psi and at water-jet-assisted pressures ranging from 1,000 to 6,000 psi. The shearer motor energy used by the shearer while cutting coalcrete was determined for each cutting condition. Results indicate that the motor energy required by the shearer for each ton of material cut did not vary significantly as the water pressure was increased. Results of dust measurements recorded near the cutting drum indicate that at water pressures above 3,000 psi, dust reductions up to 85 pct were achieved com-pared with cutting with conventional sprays. Analysis of the particle size distribution during cutting showed that increasing the water pres-sure resulted in increased median particle size. In light of these results, various mechanisms for water-jet-assisted cutting are discussed.

Heavy minerals are mined from two fossil strandlines on the southern Swan Coastal Plain. The Capel shoreline, 7 km inland, and the Yoganup shoreline, 15 km inland are arcuate, northwest-facing, and remote from the modern coast. Based on foraminiferal and molluscan assemblages, the shorelines are probably of Pliocene age. The Yoganup shoreline is adjacent to the Whicher Scarp, which is cut into the Leederville Formation (Lower Cretaceous) at the southern boundary of the Swan Coastal Plain. Stratigraphic relations and detailed sedimentology have been studied from temporary exposures in the Yoganup Extended and Yoganup North mines, within a strandline complex at 27 m and 18-33 m above sea level respectively. Heavy minerals were deposited in thin, shallowing-upward sequences along a wave-dominated clastic shoreline cut into pre-Cainozoic sediments. Lithofacies units deposited in eolian, foreshore, shoreface and lagoonal environments are the most significant sites of heavy mineral accumulation. The data collected provide a basis for further exploration.

"Maclaren Forest Products Inc.Lime is commonly used for the neutralization of acid, and the removal of heavy metals in mine waste waters. However, the precipitation of heavy metals as hydroxides must take place under conditions of controlled pH, to produce minimum concentrations of dissolved metals. An account is presented explaining the concepts applied to lime-treatment processes at Bell Mine during the period of a supernatant discharge to Babine Lake; October 18, 1982to January 25, 1983. IntroductionBell Mine of Maclaren Forest Products Inc., Babine Mining Division, an open-pit copper mine, is located on Newman Peninsula, Babine Lake approximately 65 kilometres northeast of the town of Smithers, British Columbia (Fig. 1).A depressed market for copper metal in 1982 forced a management decision to suspend operations at the mine for an indefinite period from October 3 I, 1982. For some time prior to the mine closing date, mine management was concerned about the increasing level of supernatant in the tailings pond , and its possible effects on the stability of the dam when cycloning of mill tailings ceased. Consideration of these potential hazards led to an application being filed with the Provincial Waste Management for a permit to discharge the excess water to Babine Lake. This large lake, an important link with several significant salmon spawning sites, is a major contributor to the British Columbia commercial fishing industry. Jurisdiction for the environmental affairs in the area is shared by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, the Environmental Protection Service, and the Provincial Waste Management Branch. These agencies were directly concerned in the formulation of discharge permit following joint consultation, and exchange of information with the company on environmental concerns. An approval was finally granted to discharge approximately 1,000,000 cubic metres of supernatant from the tailings impoundment at Bell Mine into Hagan Arm, Babine Lake from October 18, 1982 with a daily discharge not to exceed 9000 cubic metres. Provisions were made that a particular discharge procedure be followed, and that the company would be responsible for setting up a sampling and monitoring program to safeguard the quality of the effluent."

Substantial efforts to develop application software based on years of research on process modelling are being pursued in many countries ( 1 .2,3,4.5). The late BO's should see a flurry of success stones about significant leaps of productivity achieved in several plants through systematic process evaluation and computer simulation studies.In Canada. the SPOC project (Simulated Processrng of Ore and Coal) was initiated at CAN MET in 1980 with the obJective of developing and transferrrng to the mineral rndustry a computer-based methodology for process evaluation and optimization. The proiect deliverables include:- an engineering manual covering most aspects of off-line computer simulation:- a bank of FORTRAN software accessible through data communication lines for user familiarization and distributed at a nominal cost in source form by CANMETThe yearly progress reports of the project contain detailed information on the project elements since 1980 16). The context of SPOC can be summed up by quoting Gordon Agar""s 1975 statement during a workshop on research needs in the mineral industry: ""What is needed is a joint effort between the academic community and one or more enliglitened industrial concerns. The effort will have to be an iterative one with data collection followed by testing the model modification of the model (s), more testing prediction, modification. data collection and so on (7). A few parallel in1- t1atives had been reported in papers or research contract reports (8, 9) but there was an obvious need for CANMET to bridge the gap between the R&D and the production sectors by undertaking a project that would document past applications and induce a new generation of initiatives through the consol1dat1on and transfer of suitable manuals and software. The effort took shape as the CANMET SPOC pro1ect in which methodology transfer was to play a key role (10)."

"In October 1984, Rocanville Division began using a stacking system to handle potash mill tailings. Previous to this date, mill tailings were slurried to the top of the tailings pile and allowed to debrine while flowing mobile stackers. The stackers consist of cyclone packs to debrine the tailings and drag conveyors with screw discharges to deposit the tailings onto the existing pile. The paper will deal with the various aspects of the project from conception to its present state. IntroductionPrevious to 1984, when the stacking project was first implemented, potash mill tailings were handled as follows. Mill tailings were first debrined to approximately 65% solids using a cyclone cluster. The cyclone underflows were then introduced onto a vacuum scroll filter table. Here the tailings were further debrined and discharged into the disposal tank where the tailings were reslurried with reclaim brine and pumped to the tailings disposal site. At the disposal site the slurry was discharged onto the tailings pile and by a natural settling process the tailings were debrined with the brine ultimately collected in the reclaim brine ponds. The shape and profile of the tailings pile was controlled by building salt dikes to control the flow of the discharged tailings slurry. As the tailings pile grew in height, booster pumps were added to the disposal system."

Definition of the optimum open pit, whether an intermediate phase or final design, will be sensitive to many factors. The most basic will include geological and mining constraints, mining and processing costs, pit slopes and product prices. The application of the three dimensional Lerchs-Grossmann pit optimization procedure to this task is described for a range of gold deposits. A new approach to the modelling and manipulation of the geological model enables complex geological environments to be assessed, and sensitivity analyses to be developed. Comparisons with manually developed pit designs have been made to validate the results. The computer implementation is simple to use and can be adapted by non-computer professionals at mine Sites.

Electricity is a major cause of lost-time accidents and fatalities in the mining industry. Major hazards and unsafe practices that contribute to electrical hazards are identified in this paper. Recommendations for reducing electrical accidents in surface mining are given and are directed toward the following three areas: preventing equipment contact with overhead lines, preventing maintenance related accidents, and defining system protection techniques.

"This paper reviews the complete cycle of a small mining operation in a remote section of northern British Columbia, including discovery, exploration, development and production. The discovery of high-grade epithermal gold-silver mineralization occurred in 1969 following a regional geochemical reconnaissance program designed to search for porphyry copper mineralization in the Cassiar-Omineca Mountains. Exploration and development from 1971 to 1979 included geological, geochemical and geophysical surveys; trenching, almost 30 000 feet of surface and underground drilling in about 100 holes and cross-cutting, drifting and raising on the principal goldsilver- bearing vein. This led to the delineation of 100000 tons at an estimated grade of0.9 oz gold per ton and 18 oz silver per [on to an average depth of 120 feet below surface. of a 100-ton per day mining operation employing about 50 personnel with all supporting infrastructure transported to the site by a Hercules aircraft. The operation was subsequently supported by its own Twin Otter aircraft with periodic Hercules campaigns supplying major items including fuel.The mining operation included both open-pit and cut-and-fill methods. The milling operation employed conventional cyanide leach process with cyanide destruction initially by alkali chlorination and subsequently by the Inco SOl /Air process.The fly-in operation, initially structured on a 21-day-in and 7-day-out basis was modified to al-t-day-in and Z-day-out basis with no loss in efficiency and with a significant increase in employee satisfaction. The operation, which earned the B.C. Small Mines Safety A ward in two consecutive years in its Ll-month operating history, emphasized safety and process hazard awareness. Wildlife studies in the environmentally sensitive mine area also showed that industry and wildlife can coexist in harmony.Most importantly, the paper compares the feasibility assumptions with actual operating experience."

Comalco Limited has recently completed construction of a $50 million kaolin plant at the site of its bauxite mining and industrial minerals operation at Weipa. The plant will produce 100,000 tonnes per annum of coating grade kaolin for the paper industry. Comalco produced the first coating kaolin from the deposit in 1979 on a trial basis. Since then a variety of quality coating grades with specific particle size distributions and brightness values have been prepared. Extensive drilling and bulk sampling of the deposit over eight years has shown that the ore body is large and of a high grade suitable for the production of premium quality coating kaolins. The processing plant technology was developed by Comalco in association with the European kaolin and equipment producer Amberger Kaolinwerke GmbH (AKW). The Weipa kaolin plant is the first of this size to be built in the Pacific Basin region and it will offer the region's paper-coating mills a stable and reliable source of high-quality kaolin, shipped from an established bulk loading port. This report documents the program conducted to demonstrate the application of a flywheel-powered propulsion system to underground mining shuttle cars. Such application can replace the present electrical trailing cable common to most shuttle cars and thereby eliminate those safety hazards, maintenance problems, and haulage route limitations inherent in the trailing cable. Described are the activities undertaken to specify and design a flywheel of optimum size, shape, and material; to identify the best concepts of input and output systems; and to achieve installation of the power package into a shuttle car. The resultant Flywheel-Powered Shuttle Car is an FMC Model 6L shuttle car, 6-ton capacity, 20-ton gross vehicle weight, powered by a flywheel system with 4.5-kilowatt-hour usable energy. The completed vehicle was delivered to the Bureau of Mines in Bruceton, Pennsylvania, for testing and evaluation.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines and Western Fuels Utah, Inc. entered into an agreement to plan, install, and evaluate a micro-computer based monitoring and control system at Deserado Mine, an underground coal mine. The U.S. Bureau of Hines contracted the Colorado School of Mines (CSN) to independently evaluate the project. CSM evaluated and documented costs, benefits, problems, and management and labor perceptions in this report. Recommendations are provided for mine operators and monitoring system vendors considering future installations.
