9.1 INTRODUCTION Precious metals in a leach solution are extracted, concentrated, and purified to complete the process begun in the heap and to produce an end product which will provide an economic payback to the mine developer/operator. Several different processes are required to convert the dissolved precious metals into pure metal bars. This chapter discusses the actual production of metal once it has been recovered from the pregnant leach solutions by the zinc cementation (Merrill -Crowe) or carbon adsorption processes. Metal production is generally taken to mean the production of a fairly pure "dore" bar. This chapter also reiterates some information from Chapter 8 in a slightly different context, since the focus of Chapter 8 was a fairly detailed description of the two actual recovery processes, whereas the focus of this chapter is metal production. The sale of an intermediate precious metal product is possible (as opposed to the production of dore bars at the mine site); however, the value of the precious metals is reduced by the various charges and risks associated with precious metal processing. For this reason, most operators choose to produce the most refined metal possible in order to maximize project economics. Precious metals may be extracted from the leach solution by both conventional and unconventional processes. The conventional processes are activated carbon/electrowinning (ACE) and zinc precipitation (ZIP). The unconventional processes are resin ion exchange, solvent extraction, and direct electrowinning. A typical ACE process has two circulating loops. The first loop adsorbs the cyanide-metal complexes from the dilute leach solution onto the activated carbon. A second, separate solution loop removes the cyanide-metal complexes from the activated carbon into a strong solution, the electrowinning electrolyte. Activated carbon is transferred from one fluid loop to the other. The operating cost of the ACE process is directly proportional to the quantity of carbon stripped and thus to the quantity of precious metal produced. A typical ZIP process contains a single circulating loop. The solution is filtered, deaerated, contacted with zinc, and filtered again. The barren leach solution is then returned to the heap. An experimental mining project has been carried out in the Collie Basin to demonstrate the safe operation of total extraction mining techniques in the underground mines of the basin. To achieve this, it was necessary to design and install a means of controlling or removing groundwater so that goafing of the overlying strata could be safely achieved as part of the mining operation. The site chosen for the experiment was a triangular panel adjacent to Western No 6 (WD6) underground mine, which includes the 3 to 4 m thick Wyvern Seam beneath 130 to 180 m of overburden. The test area abuts a major fault on the downdip side. The overburden and underburden sequences include several horizons of permeable sandstones which form major aquifers. Water problems have long been recognized in all underground mines in the Collie Basin, and have previously prevented the successful application of total extraction mining. Following extensive hydrological investigations, dewatering and depressurization systems were designed to dewater the immediate roof aquifers and to depressurize aquifers higher in the sequence and in the floor. This would enable stable roof conditions to develop and controlled goafing to be achieved. The roof dewatering/depressurization procedure involved a combination of in-mine vertical roof drainage holes and conventional dewatering bores constructed from the ground surface above the mining trial area. The dewatering system was installed and operated for 29 months before the commencement of mining. Mining was eventually successfully completed in two trial panels using a retreat Wongawilli extraction system using bridge conveyors and continuous miners. Water inflow into the mine workings was channelled to a constructed sump area at the lowermost corner of the panel and pumped to the surface via vertical sump bores. The dewatering and depressurization measures adopted were successful in permitting the first controlled and systematic total extraction recovery of coal from the Collie Basin. This trial mining exercise demonstrated the potential for increasing substantially the recovery of coal from the Collie Basin, where previously recovery rates of around 30 percent from underground mining were commonplace, using only bord and pillar methods.

During the construction of shaft on the fractured and weak rock strata, the stability of construction plays an important role. This study includes earth stress estimation, support method, and stability analysis. Stresses on the site of three shafts include structural residual stresses, earth pressures, and hydrostatic pressures were determined. The basic method of estimating the support strength is dependent upon the' size of the plastic ring after rock excavation. During the construction of the shaft, geotechnical measurements, physical properties of the rock, and the change after excavation have to be evaluated again. Geology and construction methods need further consideration.

The Genesis gold mine, owned and operated by Newmont Gold Co., is located in section 31, T36N, R50E within Eureka County, Nevada along the Carlin Trend of sediment-hosted disseminated gold deposits. Mining commenced in 1986 with present mineable and stockpiled reserves listed at 17,711,000 tons of ore averaging 0.073 opt Au, totalling 1.292 million ounces of gold. Ore is primarily hosted within Devonian calcareous siltstones that have been subjected to intensive argillization and silicification episodes. Additional mineralogic and geochemical features of the Genesis ores include enrichment in iron-oxides, kaolinite, arsenic and antimony; the ore zone is relatively depleted in carbonates and sulfides as a result of supergene and hypogene oxidation. Two major structural zones enhanced the permeability of the siltstones and served as the main hydrothermal conduits within the deposit. Prior to the main ore stage, the host rocks were subjected to metasomatic effects caused by emplacement of the Juro-Cretaceous Goldstrike granodiorite pluton and associated dikes and sills. Micron-size gold occurs in clays, micro-crystalline quartz, and in arsenical complexes. Non-oxidized carbonaceous and sulfidic ores and silica-locked ores result in variable preg-robbing and refractory responses during cyanide recovery. Selective mining and milling has resulted in the successful treatment of the Genesis orebody.

Since geologic anomalies are one of the governing factors of instability of underground openings, it is extremely important to know in advance the locations and extent of these anomalies such as faults and weak zones. At an underground coal mine in the Black Warrior Basin, core drilling was conducted to find a fault in an area where they were planning to locate longwall panels and possibly a shaft. Core logging did not provide sufficient information to delineate the exact location, strike, and dip of the fault. However, a high resolution reflection seismic study successfully solved this problem. This experience proved the seismic exploration technique could be used for premining coal exploration by reducing drilling costs and providing more accurate and detailed information about geologic anomalies.

"The theoretical basis of ideal smelting reduction using coal as reductant in a process employing closed loop forced-circulation of hot metal is outlined. In the proposed process, an extensive area of relatively slag-free hot metal is available as a heat sink for absorbing the large amount of heat produced by complete combustion of CO within the furnace. Any slag that is formed within the oxidizing arm of the furnace loop is quickly swept away as a thin floating layer by the bulk movement of hot metal which is induced positively by forced melt circulation and sustained by causing the hot metal and the thin slag layer to overflow into a lower level hearth in which coal is carbonised and dissolved directly into the circulating melt.The proposed process is shown to offer very substantial cost savings over all other direct smelting technology. This is mainly because of its inherently low capital cost and its high energy efficiency. Furthermore, the favourable economics are not reliant on fuel gas credits as all the process gas is combusted within the reactor itself.IntroductionMetallurgical processes in the year 2000 will be compromise solutions to the metallurgical problems that already exist today. It is common knowledge that the mineralogical complexity of certain polymetallic sulphides, for example, precludes high degrees of separation and recovery by conventional mineral beneficiation. steps are therefore being taken towards the development of a truly polymetallic smelting process which will produce simultaneously zinc lead and copper as, metals from complex ores without prior beneficiation(l). In the ferrous extraction industry, the shortcomings of the highly efficient modern blast' furnace are well known and world-wide there is considerable effort being directed towards coal-based ironmaking without the requirement of metallurgical coke as a process intermediate. The current status 0f2Joal-based ironmaking has recently been reviewed by Smith and Corbett. (2)"

A case study of migration of a paper factory fluid wastes, on the distance of 5 km from an underground disposal site to an ore mine is presented. The ore mine in question, situated in SW Poland is pumping 3.5 m3/s (ca 300 000 m3/day) of groundwater, producing a cone of depression about 150 m deep and several kilometers wide. The migration of wastes (pollutant) occurs within the carbonate karstic aquifer of Triassic age. The aquifer is about 100m thick and is characterized by the coefficient of hydraulic conductivity equal to 8 m/day on the average. The results of systematic measurements carried out for 13 years enabled to estimate the mean breakthrough curve of the pollutant. On this basis and taking into account the coefficient of hydraulic conductivity as well as the mean hydraulic gradient between the disposal site and the ore mine, the migration parameters of the polluting material, i.e. the real flow velocity, the effective porosity and the longitudinal disper- sivity have been calculated. As the measurements considered a long migration distance of the pollutant, the obtained hydrodynamic dispersion constant (dispersivity), in the authors opinion, is reliable enough to be applied for regional groundwater calculations, regardless of the "scale effect".

Environmental considerations are extremely important in planning and carrying out mergers, acquisitions and real estate transfers. It is not inconceivable that potential or actual environmental liabilities could exceed the targeted company's net worth or the book value of the real estate of interest. It is therefore essential that an environmental due diligence investigation (DDI) be performed to quantify environmental liabilities before sales, mergers or acquisitions. This paper will discuss general procedures used in environmental due diligence investigations. The emphasis will be placed on mergers and acquisitions. It should be pointed out that the procedures discussed in this paper are general and must be modified to fit each particular merger or acquisition under consideration.

Spontaneous combustion presents a very serious hazard to both safety and economics of mining operations. Notwithstanding considerable research that has been done over the years to present and control spontaneous combustion the risk still exists. Consequently, this problem poses a major challenge to mine safety researchers; new and improved techniques are constantly being developed to deal with this major hazard. This paper reviews the current practices to prevent and control spontaneous combustion in coal mine operations highlighting new developments in this area. Research and development work presently being carried out in Canada to' deal with this problem is also discussed which includes monitoring, inertization and application of biotechnology.

In 1987, at the request of the Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied 13,374 acres of the 14,994-acre Ireteba Peaks Wilderness Study Area (NV-050-438) in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The study area is located in Clark County, NV, about 4 miles south of Nelson, NV. No identified resources were found within the Ireteba Peaks study area, although there are identified subeconomic resources just outside of the study area boundary. Most of the area is underlain by Tertiary granitic rocks, which apparently postdate mineralization. The area is virtually surrounded by mining districts with mines developed in older rock units. On the north side, quartz monzonite, volcanic tuff, and tuffaceous sediments in the Eldorado mining district host deposits of gold, silver, copper, zinc, and mercury. On the south side, Precambrian gneiss, intrusive andesite porphyry, and hornfels in contact with Quartz monzonite in the Searchlight mining district host gold, silver, copper, and lead deposits. The Newberry mining district to the southeast had copper, gold, and silver mineralization in Precambrian gneiss and andesite.

'Gold-telluride mineralization was deposited in quartz veins which cut a Late Cretaceous tonalite pluton emplaced near the southern margin of the Peninsular tectono-stratigraphic terrane in south-central Alaska. The gold-bearing veins formed shortly after the development of a widespread Cu-Mo sheeted quartz vein system. Early mineral assemblages consist of quartz, white mica, pyrite, and arsenopyrite (wall rock only). Subsequently, pyrite. sphalerite, chalcopyrite, zoned tetrahedrite and gold precipitated within multiply fractured veins. Late stage galena, tellurides (altaite, nagyagite, coloradoite), and Pb-Sb or Pb-Cu-Bi sulfosalta with gold constitute bonanza ore assemblages that are variably associated with quartz, white mica, ankerite, and calcite. Fluid inclusion evidence coupled with mineral assemblage paragenesis suggests the depletion of volatiles (C02, H2S) and cooling resulted in the precipitation of high grade gold mineral assemblages.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the feasibility of removing heavy metals from mineral-process waste streams by precipitation with lignochemicals and humic acids. Lignochemicals are by products from the paper industry, while humic acids are obtained by caustic treatment of peat, subbituminous coal, and lignite. These high-molecular-weight organic materials have many functional groups, which can coordinate and form innercomplex salts with heavy metals that are crystalline precipitates. Filtering of a humic-acid-or lignochemical-treated solution or waste stream containing these precipitates removes the heavy metal sequstrates. Tests were conducted with two lignochemical samples, three humic acid samples, lime (CaO), and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) in which increasing amounts of these additives were reacted with 50 mL of solution containing Fe3+ , Al3+, Cr3+, Pb2+, Cu2+, Cd2+, Zn2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Mn2+, and Hg1+. At the appropriate pH, greater than 90-and 99-pct removal was achieved for these 11 heavy metal ions from the 10-and lOO-ppm solutions, respectively, using lignochemicals and humic acids. Removal efficienC)' with these organic materials is better than that with CaO, especially for the more toxic ions, Hg1+, Cd2+, and Pb2+. Unlike the precipitates formed with NaOH or CaO, those with lignochemicals and humic acids are compact and noncolloidal. The volume of their sludge is sharply lower than that of the finely dispersed lime or soda precipitates; thus, their removal in settling tanks or by simple filtration is enhanced.

The Bureau of Mines, in an effort to improve resource conservation, mine planning and development, is currently investigating the loading behavior of pillars in multiple-seam developments. The simultaneous mining of two or more coalbeds may cause instability between room-and-pillar operations resulting in an interaction known as pillar load transfer. Although pillars may be adequately designed for single-seam mining, the development of a second seam may complicate loading conditions in both operations. If pillars are not adequately designed to contend with this load transfer, failure of the mine structure may result. To improve multiple-seam development and pillar design, the Bureau studied the loading characteristics of pillars in three separate multiple-seam operations. In all three cases, instrumented pillars recorded increasing pressure after development of the second seam. Increases in the average pillar pressure ranged from 7 to 110 pct over predicted overburden loads. An analysis of pillar loading before and after second-seam mining indicates that the ratio of overburden to innerburden thickness is a critical factor influencing load transfer. Based on this relationship, safety factors for case study pillars are calculated and alternative design considerations are discussed.

Pictured on these pages are the seven RMCMI Scholarship Award Winners for the 1987-88 year followed by a brief profile. Six of the winners were present as RMCMI guests at the June convention in Breckenridge, Colorado to receive their recognition plaques at the welcome session held Monday, June 27, 1988. In addition to the plaques, each winner receives $500.00 to be used toward tuition in the coming academic year. Also, as this is a continuing award, the winners from the previous year will also receive an additional $500.00 for tuition use in their senior years provided they have maintained a good academic standing and are recommended by their university. Criteria for these awards is (1) That the award be made in the spring to a sophomore student to be used toward tuition during the junior year. (2) That the recipient be both a U.S. citizen and a resident of the state involved. (3) That the recipient have good academic standing, be pursuing a degree in a mining related field and have an expressed interest in Western coal as a possible career path. The scholarship program was extended in early 1988 to include curricula other than mining department, but in the engineering disciplines, such as geology, mineral processing and metallurgy. Water ice pillars far underground mine roof support can be frozen and/or maintained and/or melted on demand. The system to do this consists of a refrigeration brine chiller, brine circulation system and disposable plastic containers. Fusion expansion, resilience to dynamic loads, plastic deformation under stress, and non-contamination of coal or ore are unique properties of ice. Lower labor and material costs are economic advantages of ice far mine structural support. Ice brattices can become ice pillars on retreat. For safety, ice pillars can be placed (by remote control, if necessary) in hazardous sites without human entry.

Foster-Miller has recently developed a new concept.for a highly specialized shaft lining system. This innovative shaft lining system uses a continuous slipforming placement technique. lining the shaft from the bottom up such as in a raised bored shaft. Although this part is not unique, the concept is designed to use polyurethane foam instead of concrete for the liner material. Furthermore, the concept is designed to attain rates of advance of 30 m/hr. The polyurethane foam liner is designed to be thinner (100 mm) than a conventional concrete liner (300 mm). It will eliminate the high cost associated with the erection and operation of an on-site concrete batch plant. The system will be designed to be operated remotely, requiring few personnel for its operation. This system (or parts of it) may be appropriate where fast construction speed is required or where a jointless liner is needed.

The Witwatersrand reefs provide excellent examples of chemical and structural control on gold distribution. All mined gold appears to coma from a carbon -gold association and/or Fe-S-Au association, and also from immediately above or below unconformity surfaces. A total raliance on the current syngenetic model for Witwatersrand gold does not appear to be justified from the accumulated data and may be responsible for missed opportunities during exploration: consideration of other models is suggested especially where they better fit the data. The stratabound natura of Witwatersrand gold 1& critical to mining, but is emphasized in syngenetic models to the virtual exclusion of many other important observations. By analogy with other deposit types, stratabound character is probably a poor guide to genesis.

"Construction of the first stage of the tailings disposal facility for the Montana Tunnels Project was completed in October 1986. The project is located 37 km south of Helena, Montana, and involves mining of42 million tons of weathered diatreme are at a rate or 13 500 tpd to produce a gold/silver dore, as well as lead and zinc concentrates. The tailings disposal facility for the project includes a fully drained tailings impoundment for storage of the tailings solids, and a process waterpond for storage of all decanted water prior to recyling to the mill. The over-all facility is designed to achieve the basic objectives ofminimizing seepage to the environment in the short- and longterm, and achieving a fully drained stable tailings mass suitable for immediate reclamation on completion of mining. Specific features of the design include a soil bentonite seal and drainage system within the tailings basin, a free draining embankment with a design flow-through capacity of 4000 US gpm and an ultimate height of 230 ft (70 m), and a soil bentonite lined make-up water pond with a capacity of 420 acre-feet (530 000 m'). The tailings will be discharged in a rotational sequence through multiple spigot offtakes to achieve a thin-layer low energy laminar flow. This 'sub-aerial' deposition results in higher stored densities and maximizes liquid-solid separation on the tailings beaches. The over-all design played a major role in the successful permitting of the project, and was significantly cheaper than a conventional wet disposal system, with overall unit costs for tailings disposal of less than US$0.36 per ton.This paper outlines the site characteristics and the tailings material properties and their influence on the design. Extensive use was made of naturally occurring free draining materials as well as bentonite modified soil liners within the tailings basin, embankment and retention ponds. General construction procedures for the various components are described, as well as on-going construction requirements utilizing materials from the open pit. Finally, the over-all costs and unit costs for tailings disposal are presented."

The Bureau of Mines investigated the use of ion-exchange technology for the recovery of precious metals from cyanide leach and spent electrolytic solutions. This research included adsorption of gold and silver on both weak-and strong-base anion-exchange resins. The effects of nickel, mercury. and iron on precious metal loading of strong-base resins were also determined. Due to the nonselectlvity of strong-base resins, selective elution also was investigated. Both commercially available and experimental weak-base anion-exchange resins were tested. None of the commercial weak-base resins tested were suitable for a caustic-cyanide system owing to their low recovery of precious metals at pH 10 or above; however, three experimental resins have possible application. Continuous tests conducted with mill cyanide solution in a multicompartmented ion-exchange column using strong-base anion-exchange resins adsorbed nearly 100 pct of the precious metals as well as the iron and nickel. During the elution of this loaded resin the iron was first removed with NaCI plus NaOH; then nickel with dilute H2S04 or HCl; finally gold and silver with thiourea in dilute HCl.

The objectives of this study were to (1) document the hydrologic impacts of longwall mining on ground water, (2) identify the factors which affect the extent of dewatering, and (3) develop empirical trends to predict the extent of dewatering and recovery in advance of mining. The study was confined to three mine sites in north-central West Virginia. At each site, available ground water supplies were identified and monitored for dewatering effects and recovery. Mine A, located in Upshur County, West Virginia, has relatively thin overburden (approximately 715-280 feet). At this site domestic water supplies and specially constructed monitoring wells were monitored, continuing with an earlier study done by Cifelli arid Rauch. Most such supplies were completely dewatered over the longwall panel. Some of these wells have shown significant recovery, especially near a stream. Extensive monitoring of two nested piezometer wells revealed that dewatering generally started in advance of undermining in the lowermost monitored overburden zones first and then progressed upwards. Most dewatered wells completed in bedrock have shown no recovery, except. for valley drilled wells located within 100 feet of a Stream. Affected dug wells completed in valley alluvium rend located within 200 feet. of the nearest stream have shown significant recovery. Some wells have partially collapsed following mine subsidence. Mine B, having relatively thick overburden (approximately 585 to 900 feet), is located in Monongalia County, West Virginia. Ground water supply surveys have been conducted there in an attempt to study past dewatering effects. Owners reported Chat several wells were dewatered by longwall mining arid vertical air shafts that preceded longwall mining. Dewatered wells over longwall panels hove shown some recovery within 3 ½ years of mining. Mine C also has relatively thick overburden (approximately 585-900 feet), and is located mostly in Greene County, Pennsylvania. In addition to a survey of domestic water supplies at this site, five specially constructed monitoring wells were tested. The shallow monitoring wells suffered drops in water level due to mining but totally recovered within one day to three weeks after dewatering occurred. However, they did occasionally exhibit partial collapse during mine subsidence. Subsidence fracturing was beneficial in increasing the lateral hydraulic conductivity by a factor of about S to 22 for rock strata located within 124 feet of the surface, indicating enhanced shallow aquifer potential. One deep well suffered both partial dewatering and structural damage, with the state of water recovery bring uncertain. Also, two shallow domestic supplies out of five located over the mine were reportedly dewatered, but this claim could not, be substantiated.
