This paper will present the results of an analysis of several abandoned coal mine projects and includes field data for over a dozen different reclamation projects recently completed in the state of West . Virginia. The analysis was performed with the objective of summarizing and or classification of the environmental consequences with reference to the characteristics of the mining facilities (surface, underground, etc.). The analysis also addressed the itemized cost of remediation with respect to procedures, environmental concerns and time. The results of the analysis are that each abandoned coal mine site in West Virginia have/had many unique features and in most cases include a combination of environmental concerns that complicate comparisons. The study also revealed that the abandoned mine land program for mines abandoned prior to 1977 that is being financed by a tax on the production of coal, has produced many benefits for the state of West Virginia. This grant program administered by the Office of Surface Mining, has resulted in a high quality methodology of remediation that has been successful for many years in greatly minimizing and/or eliminating environmental concerns from abandoned coal mines.

Magnetic separation employing superconducting technology is now accepted within the Kaolin processing industry, proving the value of this technology and its ability to operate reliably even at the most remote site. Developments in superconducting magnet engineering, including cryogen free operation, combined with experience in mineral processing enables new forms of Wet and Dry superconducting magnetic separation to be developed. Applying the high magnetic force advantages at 5 T else available from such magnets to other materials is now a reality. High magnetic force mineral separating system developments are reviewed allowing the mineral processor to take advantage of a technology that is no longer confined to the laboratory.

"This paper reviews the installation, start-up, and operation of a comprehensive monitoring and targeting management technique in which all plant utilities (i.e., electricity, natural gas, compressed air, and water) are managed as controllable resources in the same way that raw materials, mined ore, personnel and capital are managed.The essential elements of monitoring and targeting (M&T) include:•gathering in a systematic, disciplined way the utility information by energy account centres;•closely monitoring the utilities used in each centre and comparing them with production on a common time base (e.g., kWh/ton per day);•bench marking and target setting to pro-vide attainable energy reduction goals which can be further refined as they are achieved; and•establishing an implementation plant that may provide efficiency enhancing benefits to various operating areas within the plant.The M&T system will reduce utility consumption per unit of production on a continuing basis.This would translate into sustained operating cost and waste. M&T will also provide better information for assessing the plant operation and progressively implementing further enhancements."

Peat has unique physical, chemical and biological properties. These include high porosity and water retention, high absorption and adsorption properties, and high buffering capacity. In addition, peat is a rich medium for microorganism activity. Peat has traditionally been used for horticultural purposes. However, in recent years, peat is increasingly being used for waste- treatment purposes. This paper reviews North American literature on the use of peat for waste-treatment applications. The literature indicated that peat has potential for use in the treatment of municipal and on-site effluents, for the removal of low concentrations of heavy metals and for the adsorption of liquid and gaseous hydrocarbon pollutants.

Water contact angles in the air/water/francolite, fuel oil/water/francolite and fuel oil/water/quartz systems were measured to describe the wetting characteristics of these minerals. It was found that white francolite is more hydrophilic than black and tan francolite both in the absence and presence of fatty acid addition. The contact angle measurement results do not correlate very well with the flotation response and it appears that kinetic aspects of the bubble attachment process play an important role in the francolite-fatty acid flotation system.

The Pittsburgh Safety and Health Technology Center (PSHTC) of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) provides engineering and scientific support to the inspectorate personnel of MSHA. One of the Center's myriad roles is to assist in the investigation of mining accidents, especially those involving fatalities. Center personnel utilize forensics to help uncover the causes of accidents and to make technical recommendations on the prevention of future similar mishaps. To exemplify a typical forensic investigation, this paper documents the methodology used in determining the reasons for a boat sinking, which resulted in a double fatality on a mine company pond.

The leaching of a Greek low-grade manganese dioxide ore, not amenable to conventional mineral processing operations, was studied using a mixed culture of Thiobacillus sp. bacteria. The experiments were carried out in specially designed continuously aerated and stirred tank reactors arranged in two-tank series. The first tank of each series was loaded with an elemental sulfur culture suspension while the second was loaded with a manganese ore high density slurry. The bacterial culture had been previously adapted to grow on elemental sulfur and also in the presence of manganese ore and dissolved manganous ion. A two level full factorial design was constructed in order to study the effects of the ferric ion concentration in the leach solution, the "elemental sulfu weight to ore weight" ratio, the ore pulp density and the composition of the dispersed gas. The responses which were investigated included percentage manganese recovery, co-dissolution of iron and manganese dissolution rate. Parameters with constant values throughout the experiments were the leach solution pH, the nutrient medium composition, the dilution rate and the ore and sulfur grain sizes. It was found that the ferric ion concentration was the most significant factor and had a positive effect on the final percentage extraction of manganese from the ore and also on the rate of manganese solubilization from the ore. The effects of the other factors studied are discussed in detail.

Five major environmental effects of rock blasting are ground vibrations, airblast, flyrock, dust and fumes. What makes them "environmental" as opposed to occupational health and safety issues is that their impacts are felt off the mine, quarry or construction site. For some impacts, safe zones are defined through experience, flyrock being a good example. Flyrock at a mine can be 1) rock thrown beyond the blast area or expected hazard zone, 2) rock thrown beyond the permit area, or 3) rock thrown more than 1/2 the distance to the nearest non-mine structure (OSM rule for surface coal mines). Rock throw of less than the "flyrock" range is then a safety issue.

Since the advent of plate tectonic modelling, the Ramu-Markham valley has been thought the site of a classical island-arc/conti- nent collision zone. In this interpretation the units south of the Markham Valley are held to be island are / micrcontinental mate- rial accreted to Australia and those north of the valley are thought to represent a separate Finisterre island-arc terrane. Recent remapping by the Geological Survey of Papua New Guinea shows: (1) there is no terrane boundary along the Ramu-Markham valley (2) the Finisterre Volcanics are probably part of either a fore-arc sequence or oceanic plateau obducted onto a microcontinent/ volcanic-arc composite terrane, accreted to the continental Australian plate. A new tectonic model is proposed for northern PNG and involves: (I) Eocene to Late Oligocene subduction below a microcontinent remote from Australia to produce the Sepik are and related intrusives, the Finisterre Volcanics (fore-arc or possible oce- anic plateau), together with the Alife blueschist. (2) obduction of the Sepik arc in Late Oligocene-Early Miocene times over the advancing Australian plate. This resulted in crustal melting, some of the products of which are the Mid- dle to Late Miocene Akuna and Bismarck intrusive complexes of the Maramuni arc. (3) obduction of the Finisterre Volcanics began in Early Pliocene times and continues today. (4) post-Middle Miocene mineralisation is the result of melting after obduction of the Sepik microcontinent.

This paper gives a brief overview of impacts of coal blending on coal-fired power plants performance and discuses the preliminary results of an on-going study aimed at evaluating the effect of coal properties on the effectiveness, compatibility and thermal reactivity of coal blends. Plant survey studies reported no significant impacts on an existing plant designed for a high rank coal when switched to a blend of low-and high-rank coal. However, slight modification of some aspects (handling, fuel storage/stockpile, transportation, preparation, and general housekeeping) of plant design and operation may be necessary. The preliminary results of an on-going study at the Mineral Industry Research Laboratory shows that more compatible and better blends could be made from coals where ranks are closer than from those where ranks are far apart.

"The Kori Kollo gold deposit is hosted by a c.15 Ma sericitized dacite stock in the LaJoya district on the Bolivian Altiplano. The mineralization is of the Bolivian polymetallic vein(BPV) type, with a signi?cant amount of the gold reserves contained in the oxide cap.Field and microscopic studies, K-Ar dating, ??34S values of pyrite, alunite and jarosite, and ??18O values of alunite and jarosite demonstrate that some of this gold is supergene. Two types of supergene gold are present: minute gold grains, 1 to 10 microns across, of high fineness and associated with jarosite and iron oxy-hydroxides; and ‘invisible’ gold, which is probably sorbed onto minerals such as jarosite and iron oxy-hydroxides.Pyrite ??34S values fall in the limited range -3.5 ± 0.6‰, consistent with a magmatic origin. Sulfate ??34S values are homogeneous and overlap closely with those of pyrite (-1.2 ± 2.1‰), which supports petrographic evidence that sulfates replaced pyrite. By contrast, sulfate ??18O values are inhomogeneous with a large range (alunite +2 to 26‰, jarosite -5 to +18‰). These data are interpreted as reflecting kinetically controlled reactions involving various proportions of atmospheric oxygen and local meteoric water. This is typical of supergene alteration and is due to the seasonally dry climate of the Altiplano.The oxide-zone mineralogy is dominated by sulfates and iron oxy-hydroxide minerals with some phosphates and halides, which indicates that the groundwaters were acidic, oxidizing and relatively saline. Under these conditions the most likely complexes responsible for gold mobilization are halides.Geological data and K-Ar ages indicate that oxidation of the BPV deposits began at least around 11 Ma and possibly up to 15 Ma ago, and that supergene alteration lasted until around 4 Ma. During this period, erosion was minimal. Although supergene processes have been active on the Bolivian Altiplano since the Middle Miocene, in contrast to Northern Chile, enrichment of gold has not occurred."

The objective of this work was to prove repeated loading capacities and investigate the selectivity of physically stabilized algal biomass from Spirulina platensis and Chlorella sp. for the removal and recovery of cobalt, nickel and chromium from laterite heap leach liquors. The testwork was carried out on a bench scale in small glass columns and proved that it was possible to immobilize the biomass on the highly porous surface of pumice stone (kissiris). Nickel and cobalt could be removed from pure aqueous solutions of each metal by the immobilized cyanobacterial biomass. Nickel and also cobalt biosorption was sensitive to the initial solution pH. Cobalt recoveries up to 80% were achieved after 5 loading cycles, from low concentration solutions, at pH 6.0. Nickel removal was complete under the same conditions, whereas chromium sorption was ineffective. Desorption of the metal loaded columns was effected by dilute sulfuric acid. The algal species giving the best adsorption capacities for the metals under consideration was selected for further experimental work with real laterite heap leach solution produced by column leaching. A statistical analysis of all obtained results was conducted using the fraction of metal removed as response. The ratio "mass of metal removed to mass of protein contained in the immobilized cells" was determined as well. The described method might be applicable for recovery of cobalt and nickel from diluted laterite heap leach solutions, such as heap wash waters, or for their removal from waste streams of a hydrometallurgical extraction process.

A comprehensive strategic planning model has been developed for the phosphate strip mining and chemical operations at White Springs, Florida. The computerized model covers ore body modeling, production simulation and financial analysis. Several innovative features in the model include using NPV techniques in ore body block economics, adapting the floating cone method to a floating template for generating dragline mining units automatically, using interactive graphics for designing mining units, and a dragline move economics algorithm for automatic scheduling of mining unit assignments and moves. Simulation of chemical plant production uses linear programming and concentrate inventory levels control mine operating schedules.

In 1996, lack of confidence in assaying methods and sample handling affected companies as diverse as Bre-X and Timbuktu. Both share prices and the ability to raise financing are impacted when the quality of assay data is suspect. Overseas projects are subject to enhanced scrutiny when local facilities are used that are unfamiliar to brokers, financing agencies and banks. Quality control systems can be -implemented but there are associated costs. These costs should reflect the risk to the mining company, investors and financiers and the size of the proposed investment. In this regard, assay control call is considered a form of insurance to enhance the value of an exploration or mining project.

"The term ""oxide disseminated gold deposits"" refers to near surface, gold-bearing veins, faults, and shear zones that typically contain appreciable amounts of oxidized ore or gossanous material, resulting from oxidation of sulphides.The concept of oxide gold deposits underwent a dramatic change after the discovery of the Carlin gold mine in north-central Nevada in the early 1960's. Now the term implies large tonnage, low-grade bulk minable deposits that are processed by milling and/or heap leach methods.Oxide gold deposits may now be classified into two types: (1) primacy ores derived directly from the effects of hydrothermal alteration on host rocks, and (2) secondary oxide ores derived from the supergene oxidizing effects of circulating post-mineral meteoric waters on gold-bearing sulphides. Each type of deposit has unique diagnostic mineralogic and metallurgical characteristics that must be addressed to achieve successful exploration strategies and viable metallurgical exploitation.The author would like to thank the management of Newmont Metallurgical Services and Newmont Mining Company for allowing presentation of this paper. "In this study, the vapour phase reduction of titanium tetrachloride conforms to the traditional Kroll chemistry, but employs argon as an inert carrier gas and requires a higher reaction temperature of 1150°C to 1250°C. A vapour phase reaction is advantageous because titanium is the only condensed phase present, and the metal can be collected free of magnesium or magnesium chloride, in marked contrast to the titanium sponge produced by the conventional Kroll process. The yield of metallic titanium from the reaction was determined as magnesium additions ranged from 36% to 168% of the stoichiometric requirement. Yields of over 99% were obtained when an excess of magnesium was present. Although the collection efficiency was low, metallic titanium was collected at the reaction site, where all other species were present as vapours. Magnesium and chlorine concentrations in the collected titanium were less than 0.3%.IntroductionA proposed method (Curlook, 1987) for titanium production has been investigated as an alternative to the conventional Kroll process (Kroll, 1940). The advantages of the new process include a simplified means of recovering the product metal, and a potential for lower overall energy consumption and greater product purity. A higher reaction temperature for the reduction of titanium tetrachloride results in a vapour phase reaction, rather than the conventional liquid phase reaction. This is the major conceptual difference between the proposed and the established (Kroll) processes.This study focussed on optimization of the process chemistry and briefly examined the issue of product deposition and collection. Intelligent systems (IS) technologies have received much attention in a wide range of process engineering applications including process operations. With the revolutionary progress in information and computer technologies applying the latest technologies in metallurgical complexes has become a serious challenge to both management and technical teams. Objects and components are changing the way everyone relates to their computer and networks. Goals of real time performance monitoring includes maximizing the profitability by maximizing production, improving efficiency, attending product quality, costs, maintenance, environmental and safety regulations. Designers must consider the greatly expanded desktop computing, Microsoft object technology, Internet and how to build these systems. This paper discusses some opportunities and challenges using objects, components in designing applications and integrating intelligent systems tools. Two examples using performance equations and IS technologies applied to mineral processing are presented.

A bridge reconstruction project involved driving pipe piles for the new foundations. Disturbances within soil layers at depth caused sinkholes to open up within the construction site. After a near fatal accident, the pile driving installations were suspended. The solution involved ground im­provement through cement grouting with sleeve pipes and special grout additives to minimize migration of cement grout.
