Breakwater Resources Ltd is a Canadian base metals producer with Cu-Pb-Zn operations in Canada, Honduras, and Chile. Two of its operations contain economical gold levels which are recovered in both gravity and flotation concentrates. The gold payable terms in zinc concentrate are poor when compared to gold concentrates or copper concentrates and various flow sheets have been evaluated by Breakwater staff to maximise gold reporting in higher value products. The Myra Falls mine in British Columbia recovers coarse gold in the grinding circuit, part of which is upgraded and sold as a gravity-gold concentrate with the balance being directed to the copper concentrate. A sampling survey showed that there was potential gravity-recoverable gold in the copper regrind circuit. Installing a gravity concentrator in the copper regrind circuit increased the gold grade and recovery in the higher revenue copper concentrate and reduced the quantity reporting to the less well paid zinc concentrate. The El Toqui Mine in southern Chile has distinct high-and low-gold orebodies which are campaigned separately through the flotation plant. The high gold zone yields both a gravity concentrate and an unusual gold flotation concentrate. The gravity concentrate undergoes intensive cyanidation and electrowinning on-site to produce dore, while the fl otation concentrate is sold to gold producers. The zinc concentrate contains signifi cant gold values. The paper describes efforts over the past few years to improve gold returns at Breakwater's operations and highlights the different approaches dictated by the mineralogy of the gold occurrences at these two operations.

The Sao Chico gold project is located on the Tocantinzinho trend which is the most mineralised zone in the Tapajos Mineral Field of Brazil (see Figure 1). The Tapajos goldfi eld was the site of the biggest gold rush in Brazilian history in the late 1970s and 1980s when approximately 500 000 garimpeiros (artisanal miners) rushed to the area to exploit extensive areas of newly discovered alluvial gold. Approximately 20 - 30 million ounces of gold were produced from these operations before the easily won alluvial gold deposits were largely depleted. The Tapajos region has had little exploration by modern exploration methods compared to any other equivalent gold fields in the world. The gold occurs in sulfide veins developed in shear zones within Proterozoic granites. Gold grades vary from approximately 15 g/t in the hard rock veins, to up to several ounces per tonne in the supergene weathered upper portions of the veins. Goldbearing vein zones in the weathered profile are free digging. In addition, tailings dumps from previous mining operations contain gold grades of approximately 1 g/t. Metallurgical test work conducted to date indicates that gold recoveries of at least 70 per cent can be achieved via gravity concentration. Gold Anomaly, via its 100 per cent owned Brazilian subsidiary, Gold Aura Do Brasil Mineracao Ltda (GOAB), plans to mine the tailings and weathered vein material by open cut methods to generate a quick cash fl ow and to provide a better understanding of the mineralisation as part of a feasibility study for mining the underlying sulfide zone mineralisation (see Figure 2). Mining will utilise locally hired excavators and trucks and ramp up to a rate of 100 tonnes per day. To treat the gold-bearing material, GOAB has purchased an integrated 'state of the art' gravity concentration processing plant from Gekko Systems of Australia. The processing plant includes a scrubber for clay and oversize removal, coarse gold gravity separation via an inline pressure jig and an inline spinner; and fine gold gravity separation via a Falcon Concentrator. The presence of xenon isotopes from in-situ spontaneous fission of short-lived Pu244 has been confirmed in Hadean detrital zircons from Western Australia. Hadean and meteoritic zircons can retain secondary overgrowths developed after primary cristalization at 3.97-3.94 Gyr. On the moon, the metal grain in sample 66095,78 is mantled by troilite, schreibersite and cohenite. High chlorine content FeCl2 is deposited around metallic FeNi. The magnitude of Pollonium-210 to Radon-222 on the Aristarchus plateau spectrum indicates a past greater activity. The Earth Moon system from Nb/Ta systematics is consistent with a Moon iron core delayed to 3,9 Gyr.

Since the beginning of the nuclear era, there has never been a commercial solution for the large quantities of depleted uranium hexafluoride generated from uranium enrichment. In the United States alone, there is already in excess of 1.6 billion pounds of DUF6 currently stored. INIS is constructing a commercial uranium processing and fluorine extraction facility. The INIS facility will convert depleted uranium hexafluoride and use it as feed material for the patented Fluorine Extraction Process to produce high purity fluoride gases and anhydrous hydrofluoric acid. The project will provide an environmentally friendly and commercially viable solution for DUF6 tails management.

Employing gravity recovery for coarsely liberated gold and sulfide ores has potential to lead to a signifi cant reduction in the energy required for comminution and ultimately can have a significant impact on gold processing. Most of the recognised metallurgical tools at our disposal currently have been designed around recovery of relatively finely ground minerals. In order to change the paradigm of fine grind for liberation, a new set of tools need to be recognised that are capable of separations in the coarser size fractions. Some of these tools already exist and some need to be developed but the key is the way in which the fl ow sheets are arranged. A very strong understanding is required in the existing tools and their capabilities before these new flow sheets can be optimised. Only when we understand the existing gaps in technology can we start to fill these positions with new candidates. Many ores when crushed liberate their gold bearing minerals at coarser sizes than current practice would suggest (Figure 1). In order to characterise this response in ores it is necessary to utilise some new techniques in the lab such as gravity separation and ore sorting at the sizes greater than 15 mm followed by gravity recovery on fractions from 15 mm down to 150 ¦m. The most difficult range has been the mid-sized fraction from 4.0 mm down to around 150 ¦m. This is the size range in which many ores show economic liberation starting to occur and coincidentally this is the range in which many commonly used metallurgical processes reach their operational limits due to physical constraints. Examples of these processes are flotation, hydrocyclones and whole ore leach in agitated tanks which are currently the mainstays of the processing fraternity. This is an ABSTRACT ONLY. Gold rooms represent a high security area and preventing theft is a challenging task. Where gravity concentrates or high value unit intermediate products are present, particular and specific security procedures must be put in place. This paper describes the development and implementation which reflects best practice in gold room security. Procedures involving key holder systems, key locks, swipe cards and double locks preventing any one person having access to the gold room, including specific procedures for gravity gold concentrators, will be addressed. The use of monitoring and how to deal with alarms and potential hold ups will be reviewed. The use of cameras and archival DVD recorders is common in gold rooms. The use of electronic surveillance, movement detectors, seismic monitors and the two person policy and gold room entry procedures are described, including how to deal with visitors. The importance of confidentiality regarding smelting and gold pick-up days, plus strategies employed to minimise storing large quantities of gold on site will be presented. The role of metallurgical accounting in providing quality auditable information and the minimum standards of record keeping required is discussed. The role of the Gold Squad will be outlined. Regular auditing and risk analysis and several case studies are cited where security was deficient or improved.

Morning Star Gold aims to enter the ranks of Australia's gold producers, revitalising the Eastern Victorian Goldfi elds in the second half of 2010 - the fi rst gold production in around 50 years from the Morning Star Gold mine, which was once Australia's largest under WMC. This presentation will outline the redevelopment of the Morning Star Gold Mine from exploration to production. Morning Star Gold NL's (MCO) key project area is centred at the historic mining town of Woods Point and nearby Matlock (to the southeast) and Gaffney's Creek (to the northwest), all of which are located in the lower part of the Victorian Alps roughly 60 kms south of Mansfield. Morning Star has literally numerous historic mines and gold bearing 'dykes' on its tenements, many with a rich production history of high-grade gold from quartz reefs and alluvial sources. The area encompassing the Woods Point goldfi eld and the multiple high-grade gold bearing dyke structures located north towards Jamieson and south towards Walhalla formed one of the most significant mining fields in Australian history. Historical gold production was at least 155 t or around six million ounces of over a century of mining with an average production grade exceeding 27 g per tonne. The bulk of this recorded production came from just a handful of mines and of those only three were mined to any great depth. One of the key historical production hubs in this area was the famous 'Morning Star' mine, which is situated adjacent to Woods Point township. The Morning Star mine produced almost one million ounces at 27 grams per tonne, operating fairly continuously between 1861 and 1959 with a break after Jan 1939 due to the devastating 'Black Friday' bush fi res across eastern Victoria. During the early 1940s, the Morning Star was Australia's biggest gold mine. The Morning Star mine along with Walhalla ensured that this goldfield was third behind Bendigo and Ballarat as Victoria's biggest hardrock gold production centre. Morning Star Gold has rebuilt its 100 per cent owned 'Morning Star' mine with a view to producing gold in the second half of 2010. Morning Star is exploring its regional dykes in order to estimate an overall gold endowment and rank local production sources to feed its proposed mill at the Morning Star mine site. Key initial targets (all within 11 kms of the Morning Star mine) are the Waverly, All Nations, Rose of Denmark, Hunts, Wallaby and Loch Fyne dykes, all of which historically produced high grade gold, much of it gained from only shallow workings above the water table in the weathered zone of rocks. Historically the Morning Star mine was developed over 24 levels to a depth of 940 m via one large vertical shaft and a smaller, deeper inclined shaft at the 1900 feet level underground. At present MCO has dewatered and completely refurbished all infrastructure to the ten level (~310 m below surface). MCO knows there are a number of substantially under-explored and undeveloped or partially developed but not stoped areas within the Morning Star mine. As a result, MCO has been carrying out extensive channel sampling and an underground diamond drilling program targeting areas of the mine that were largely unexplored and undeveloped by the last operators of the mine - Western Mining Corp Ltd (Gold Mines of Australia). Four thousand, fi ve hundred pages of archival WMC records have helped the cause significantly. The shaft refurbishment and reconstruction stage is complete. This has been a program that originally commenced back in 1993 and has cost around $22 M. This refurbishment paved the way for the extensive underground resource focused diamond drilling program, which MCO completed in 2008 with two company-owned and operated drill rigs from drill cuddies on level 9 (900 feet underground) of the mine. This drilling, which encountered some stunning grades intersections and multiple visible gold hits, has outlined further production opportunities including 0.4 m @ 1392 g/t Au (MS 410). Metallurgical testing conducted by Gekko Systems of samples obtained from the exploration program found gravity concentration and a leach circuit gave recoveries of ~95 per cent to 99 per cent, or ~92 per cent from gravity alone at a coarse crush (300 ¦m). Currently, the plan is to use gravity to fi rstly produce dore bars on-site from the free milling gold and secondly a saleable concentrate for CIL processing off-site. A purpose built 10 t/h (~80 000 t/a) gravity treatment plant was subsequently ordered from Gekko and is expected to be installed onsite and commissioned in the Q3 2010. The plant features fi ne crushing with a vertical shaft impactor, followed by gold concentration by inline pressure jig, inline spinner and Wilfley table. This is an ABSTRACT ONLY. Brannerite is commonly referred to as a refractory uranium mineral as it is usually highly resistant to acid leaching. There is however widely varying literature data on brannerite leaching, with some studies reporting that brannerite leaching can be achieved under relatively mild conditions. The differences observed for brannerite leaching are most likely due to the high degree of variation in the composition and structure observed in natural brannerites. These aspects of brannerite chemistry however are not very well understood due to a lack of fundamental research. The aims of this study were to investigate and develop methods for synthesising brannerites of varying composition and to investigate the effects of composition on brannerite leaching in acidic conditions.

Gravity gold recovery has been practiced for thousands of years, making it one of the oldest forms of mineral processing. Gold is 19 times heavier than water although the barren rock is generally only 2.7 times heavier. Any potential gold ore needs to be characterised to assess its amenability to a gravity recoverable gold (GRG) process based on well planned and executed test work. Scale up considerations need to be considered in designing a gravity circuit. The economic impact of a gravity circuit should be justified based on the installed cost and likely benefits. Maximising gravity gold recovery results in a faster cash flow, lower operating cost per ounce and higher overall gold recoveries compared to the several weeks required to recover gold adsorbed onto carbon. The advent of centrifugal concentrators such as the Knelson and Falcon, coupled with intensive leaching of concentrates (ILR), has revolutionised gravity gold circuit designs. Considerations associated with the sizing of the centrifugal machines and the percentage of the circulating load (bleed) that should be processed is discussed in this paper. The trends with gravity circuit layout, engineering, as well as optimum dumping cycles, are important areas which require close consideration. Key aspects of these are presented in this paper. There are a number of circuit configurations to be considered, including the integration of different gravity concentrators. Other gravity process design considerations such as fewer modules, the effect of equipment size and enhancement of process efficiency using preconcentration, together with factors that affect OPEX and CAPEX are addressed. Practical considerations of maintenance, security from theft, minimisation of risk and water balance considerations are discussed using different equipment and circuit configurations. The trend towards using gravity recovery in flotation plants is also reviewed. A number of examples are cited and good design aspects highlighted.

Golder Associates provided overall radiological direction and assistance to the client in their interactions with the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission and operational radiation protection services for the remediation of a calciner that had been used to process uranium. The project was somewhat unusual in that the radioactivity from within the calciner room was removed from the site and the cleaned steel recycled. The presence of yellowcake within the process equipment required stringent radiation protection measures. This project was completed successfully with minimal radiation exposures to the workers and the effective protection of the environment.

An enhanced gravity concentrator was installed in conjunction with an intensive leach reactor at the Sadiola plant in Mali last year and commissioned in December 2007. There has been much debate over the years as to the effect of gravity concentration on overall plant performance. The late Dr Laplante suggested that for every ten per cent of gold recovered by gravity, there was a corresponding 0.1 per cent to one per cent additional overall plant recovery. The results at Sadiola are consistent with this hypothesis with an overall four per cent gain in plant recovery. With total gold recovery of 12 per cent in the gravity section, grades are increased from 3.54 g/t in the gravity feed to an average of 2 600 g/t in the concentrator feed to the inline reactor. The recovery of gold in the inline reactor is in excess of 98.5 per cent. This paper discusses the background to the project, the laboratory test work prior to the equipment selection, the operational results of the system, as well as the benefi ts of the future application of high mass yield centrifugal concentrators in base metals, sulfides and industrial minerals. Bench scale, pilot scale and plant practice examples are also presented.

The decommissioning of uranium tailings facilities often requires the design of a suitable cover system. In northern climatic environments there is a portion each year that can be considered to be ?inactive? while the remainder of the year can be considered to be ?active?. There are numerous engineering design assumptions required when analyzing both the ?active? and the ?inactive? portions of the year. Cover systems are subjected to complex boundary conditions and nonlinear unsaturated soil properties. The proposed paper describes the steps necessary for the preparation and the analysis of a multi-year climatic database for the design of a cover system in northern environments. The paper also explains how climate can be classified and how observed variations from one year to the next can be taken into consideration in cover design. The results of climatic records at two different sites are used to illustrate conditions that need to be taken into consideration when designing soil cover systems.

An overall study was conducted to evaluate the properties and processes influencing the rate and magnitude of consolidation for oil sands fine tailings produced using different extraction processes. As part of this overall study, consolidation tests using slurry consolidometers were carried out for caustic and non-caustic fine tailings. The influence of a change in bitumen extraction process (caustic versus non-caustic) on consolidation properties, namely compressibility and hydraulic conductivity, was determined, as was the effect of adding a coagulant (calcium sulphate [CaSO4]) to caustic fine tailings. For fine tailings originating from two different oil sands ores (Ore A and Ore B), results were presented in terms of variation in average void ratio with time (settlement), void ratio with effective stress (compressibility), hydraulic conductivity with void ratio and coefficient of compressibility and hydraulic conductivity with sodium adsorption ratio. Findings indicated that chemical characteristics of fine tailings (water chemistry, degree of dispersion) do not have a significant impact on their compressibility behaviour and have only a small influence at high void ratio (low effective stress). The biggest advantage of non-caustic fine tailings and treating caustic fine tailings with coagulant is an increased initial settlement rate and slightly increased hydraulic conductivity at higher void ratios. Thereafter, compressibility and hydraulic conductivity is governed by effective stress.

Bendigo Mining operates a 600 000 t/a comminution, gravity, flotation and leaching processing plant for the recovery of gold from their Kangaroo Flat Operation, in the Bendigo goldfields. The free gold and gold bearing sulfi des present are typically coarse grained and hence are highly amenable to gravity recovery. Plant operating data is consistently showing that over 78 per cent of the feed gold is recovered in a circuit, consisting of inline pressure jigs, inline spinners followed by free gold tabling and intensive leaching of tabling tails. The circuit receives coarse crushed product from high pressure grinding rolls and the grinding mill discharge, which allows material to be re-circulated through the gravity process until the particles are small enough to enter the flotation circuit. A plant audit was completed on 26 November 2009 designed to give an indication of the overall operational characteristics of the gravity circuit including single pass efficiencies of associated equipment. The techniques, results and challenges of such a survey are discussed.

Two key strategies for a new generation of mining are developing domestic raw material production and doing so in an environmentally responsible way, according to presenters at the 83rd annual meeting of the SME Minnesota Section in Duluth (the 71st annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium). From technical sessions detailing how to build com-munity support, to a short course on international perspectives in iron ore mining and processing, the two-day meeting emphasized the potential of Minnesota state deposits and the importance of maintaining productive community relations both locally and globally. The meeting of more than 300 mining industry professionals began on April 20 with a traditional convocation celebrating the values of northern Minnesota. The accompanying tradeshow, with a record 131 booths, showed the speed and vigor of the economic rebound. Keynote speaker Scott Anderson, vice president and senior economist at Wells Fargo, stated the prevailing mood of the conference: ?Wow, what a difference a year makes.? With metal prices and sales up and heading higher, he said, it was clear that the production-centered economic recovery is reaching the mining and the minerals industry. However, Anderson sounded a few notes of caution. Serious threats to economic stability remain, including the burgeoning national de?cit, high unemployment and the still out-of-control foreclosure crisis. Overall, he predicted a below-average recovery and stressed the importance of developing a long-term business strategy.

Four companies mined ball call in four states in 2009, H.C. Spinks Clay Co. Inc. (owned by Lhoist Group), Kentucky-Tennessee Clay Co. (owned by Imerys Group), Old Hickory Clay Co. and Unimin Corp. Production, on the basis of preliminary data, was 820 kt (904,000 st) with an estimated value of $39.4 million. That was a 15-percent decrease in tonnage from 967 Mt (1.1 mil-lion st) with a value of $44.3 million that was produced in 2008. At 6 percent downgrade to a low point beneath California?s Sacramento River, the Lower Northwest Interceptor Sewer was a difficult project from the outset. Project owner Sacramento County Regional Sanitation District (SRC-SD) planned to excavate the V-shaped tunnel in two sections using an earth pressure balance (EPB) machine in soft ground. Muck removal, due to the steep downgrade, was a tricky proposition. ?We did look at muck cars, but determined they were not the best option due to the relatively steep slope of the tunnel alignment. The safety benefits of conveyors on this job were obvious, as there were not the potential hazards associated with muck cars traveling on an incline or derailing,? said Steve Norris, senior civil engineer for SRCSD The successful project represented one of the first instances of a conveyor system being used for a soft ground tunnel boring machine (TBM) application. Several projects in California, including a recent tunnel completed in 2009, have highlighted a growing acceptance of conveyor muck removal in a variety of ground conditions. Conveyors offer higher system availability than more common methods, such as muck cars, as they allow for continual operation of the TBM. The design of conveyor systems must, however, take into account the differences in material between soft ground and hard rock, including belt cleaning features, sealed transfer points and other elements.

One of the major ignition sources of fires and explosions in underground U.S. coal mines is flame cutting and welding. On May 20, 2006, a flame-cutting operation at the Darby Mine No. 1 led to an explosion that resulted in five fatalities. On Jan. 22, 2003, another explosion caused by flame cutting at the McElroy Mine resulted in three fatalities and three serious injuries. On June 22, 1999, a flame-cutting and welding operation at the Loveridge Mine caused a fire that required sealing the mine for an extended period. On March 19, 1992, an explosion initiated by welding at the Blacksville No. 1 Mine resulted in four fatalities. These examples of mine incidents demonstrate the need to conduct research to develop best practices for safely conducting flame cutting and welding in underground coal mines. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a study on fires and explosions in underground U.S. coal mines that were caused by flame-cutting and welding operations to determine the root causes of these types of incidents. The methodology included interviewing mining personnel who perform flame-cutting or welding operations in underground U.S. coal mines and visiting mines to observe these operations. In addition, MSHA reports of investigations and accidents statistics were analyzed. The findings were used to identify and compare differences between flame-cutting and welding practices and techniques in small and large mines, eastern and western mines, low-seam and high-seam mines, room-and-pillar and longwall mines, and between experienced miners and new miners. As a result of this study, best practices were developed to reduce the number of ?res and explosions caused by flame cutting and welding. This paper provides a summary of this research.

The expansion of hydrometallurgical operations, declining ore grades and upwardly spiralling production increases the demand for fresh and recycled water with low levels of contaminants. The minerals industry is also increasingly being forced both by regulatory and cost pressures to reduce the amount of liquid waste they produce. This requires a strong focus on waste reduction by recycling, regeneration and reuse. However, these measures are often not enough in arid countries for a forward progress and expansion of their mining activities.   It is often the case that in the arid and semi-arid countries the only available water is either sea water or underground (brackish to hypersaline) saline waters. Brackish waters can be desalted at a reasonable cost but the desalination of highly saline waters is challenging and expensive.   There are emerging reports that sea water and in some cases hypersaline underground waters are now used by various mining industries as process water. This study explores the possibility of the use of sea water in various mineral processing and hydrometallurgical processes and briefly discusses the benefits and problems related to the use of saline waters at the mine and mill site. Several cases studies and preliminary laboratory test results are presented.

Environmental leaching methods such as the toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) test or the ASLP test are used to assess wastes including mining and mineral processing by-products. These tests were initially designed as regulatory tests simulating conditions in a co-disposal municipal landfill waste facility and do not allow leaching performance to be predicted in site specific scenarios. Further, the assumptions underlying these tests tend to define worst-case scenario leaching conditions for by-products from the mineral industry disposed of outside a co-disposal scenario.   Recently some characterisation leaching test methods have been issued as ISO/TS standards (ISO/TS 21268-3:2007 and ISO/TS 21268-4:2007) that aim to define the leaching performance of soil type wastes and to predict the leaching performance of these wastes over long time frames. In this preliminary work these standards are trialled for by-products from the mineral industry and the quality of information that can be obtained from them compared to TCLP/ASLP tests.   Where clear comparisons were possible, the TCLP/ASLP tests were typically found to extract a similar, or often greater, amount of component than (i) tests conducted at the same pH but without the acetate buffer or (ii) for test conditions aimed at simulating long-term leaching in an eluate defined by the waste type. While further work is required, the preliminary results indicated that the tests may provide reliable long-term estimates of leaching performance of wastes in soil types of variable pH and provide a suitable basis for long-term planning for optimal waste handling, treatment or even re-use.
