As the economy continues to slowly recover, our industry continues to finds ways to increase productivity while being forced to cut costs. The drilling and blasting process is the starting point of any aggregate or mining process. Many people refer to it as the “Primary Crusher” as it will always be more efficient to crush rock with explosives energy than it will be mechanical energy. It is the more efficient use of this energy that is addressed in this paper.

The nation runs on energy. It is essential for the economic growth and national security of the United States that the nation has an adequate, sustainable, environmentally acceptable and economically viable balanced supply of energy sources, (e.g., coal, petroleum, nuclear, natural gas, solar, wind, geothermal, biomass, hydroelectric power). Therefore, the allocation of mineral raw materials to the energy-producing sector of the economy must be a top priority that requires the total demand for energy-related materials be judged in terms of domestic supply (Fig. 1).

Field tests at a number of large mineral processing operations have been undertaken to better understand the wear life impact of different aspects of pump design, materials of construction and maintenance procedures. Data are presented for wear rates, and typical result variability is explored. To improve the availability of pumping equipment in a milling circuit it is not only important to improve the wear life, but also reduce the variability in the wear life of components so that the incidence of premature failure is lessened. Localised gouging wear due to flow separation and turbulent eddy formation is often the point at which part-holing occurs. A number of improvements to the design of pump impeller and throatbush (suction side liners) to reduce the localised gouging wear are outlined. Also, results are presented on the use of composite materials (mix of metal, rubber and ceramic) for throatbush materials to protect specific areas against wear.

The geometry and morphology of a set of low-angle fractures around a stope in a deep Witwatersrand gold mine are explained in terms of extension fractures forming under variable conditions of stress. Primary extension fractures (E1) form some distance ahead of an advancing stope along the s1, s2 plane. With stope advance, a couple of these fractures end up in a stress regime conducive to transpressional shear and a secondary set of extension fractures(E2) is formed at a high angle to the primary fractures. i.e. at a low angle to the stope. As the E2 fractures are undermined, they migrate into a stress regime of transtensional shear and a third set of extension fractures (E3) may develop between E2 fractures. These have sigmoidal shapes, being parallel to the E2 fractures at the E2 discontinuity where s3 is negative, and curved through the unfractured rock between E2 fractures where s3 is positive at the instant of fracturing. The fractures all display fractographic features characteristic of dynamic extension failure with striae indicative of the direction of rupture propagation and the local, instantaneous orientation of s1.

On Oct. 1-3, SME?s Twin Cities chapter (SME TC), in cooperation with the University of Minnesota ? Duluth?s Precambrian Research Center (UMD-PRC), cohosted a symposium on silica sand mining and processing. The conference was held at the Earle Brown Heritage Center near Minneapolis. The symposium was followed by a day-long field trip to operating mines, processing plants and loading facilities located in southwestern Wisconsin. Speakers and attendees at the symposium included university professors, industry experts, regulators, mining company representatives, equipment suppliers, consulting engineers and service companies. Approximately 320 people attended the conference. In addition, about 50 people who oppose mine development and the oil and gas industry showed up to voice their displeasure with the event and those companies that operate in this space.

"A novel hydrothermal method was applied to prepare the precursor of LiMn2O4 using pre-treated electrolytic manganese dioxide (EMD) and lithium hydroxide as the main raw materials. The precursor was subjected to heat treatment between 400 and 900ºC to obtain spinel Li1.05Mn1.95O4 and Li1.035Co0.035Mn1.930O4 positive materials for lithium ion batteries. The structure and morphology of the obtained powder materials were studied in detail by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). It is found that the precursor has an amorphous structure and a high reactivity, which is easily transferred to spinel structure during heat treatment, obtaining a positive material with an uniform structure and good performances. The XRD patterns reveal that single phase spinel Li1.05Mn1.95O4 can be obtained from the precursor after heat treatment at 600°C in air. The final Li-rich Li1.05Mn1.95O4 product obtained showed a well-defined stable spinel structure and distinctive crystal faces with particle size between 200 and 300 nm. The as-prepared Co-doped spinel sample exhibited a excellent electrochemical performance with an initial discharge capacity of 113.0 mAh/g and 93.8% of its original value was retained after 100 charge-discharge cycling at 0.5 C.INTRODUCTIONThe increasing demand for portable electronic devices and hybrid or full electric vehicles is driving the development of cheap, efficient, compact lightweight and environmental friendly rechargeable batteries systems (Chung et al., 2002; Scrosati, 1995). Lithium ion secondary batteries have satisfied this demand to a greater degree than other battery systems. The cathode material plays a critical role in the performance of Li-ion batteries. The high cost and toxicity of cobalt compounds for the cathode material of LiCoO2 has prompted a search for alternative materials. LiMn2O4-based spinels offer a potentially attractive alternative to LiCoO2, due to its abundance, low price, ease of preparation, environmentally friendly characteristics, better thermal stability, and its effortless recycling (Tarascon et al., 1991; Yabuuchi and Ohzuku, 2003; Amatucci et al., 1999; Tsai et al., 2003). Some achievements have been created to meet the requirements (Guo et al., 2010; Kang et al., 2005; Park et al., 2008; Takahashi et al., 2006; Lee et al., 2001; Yoshio et al., 2001; Arumugam et al., 2008). However, the largest obstacle encountered in the practical applications of LiMn2O4 is its fast capacity fading during long term cycling, which is due to Jahn-Teller distortion of the [MnO6] framework, the electrolyte decomposition at high potentials and manganese dissolution into the electrolyte (Fey et al., 2003). The electrochemical performance of LiMn2O4 is also strongly dependent on its morphological properties, such as crystallinity, phase purity, surface area, grain shape and particle size distribution, etc. All these morphological properties are closely related to the material synthetic routines and heat treatment processes (Huang et al., 2000; Myung et al., 2000; Takada et al., 1998)."

"Vanadium is widely utilized as an important element to improve the quality of alloyed steels in iron and steel industry. Moreover, the crystallization process of V-containing spinels plays a significant role due to the aim of achieving a fairly larger size of spinel crystals in vanadium extraction. Thus, a comprehensive exploration and discussion on the competitive precipitation and growth of vanadium, chromium and titanium spinel crystals in vanadium slag during a cooling process were carried out in the present study on the basis of a crystallization kinetic model. To be more specific, the abilities of forming crystal, precipitation order and suitable temperature range for crystallization of the three kinds of spinels were discussed with both theoretical and experimental methods.IntroductionVanadium is an important element which is used almost exclusively in ferrous and non-ferrous alloys due to its excellent physical properties such as high tensile strength, hardness, and fatigue resistance [1]. Various kinds of processes of vanadium extraction from V-containing hot metal are available at present. However, only four processes which are the Highveld process (South Africa), the Pan-steel process (China), the NTMK duplex process (Russia) and the New Zealand steel process (New Zealand) take the dominant positions [2, 3]. Although the type of reactor and the initial vanadium content in hot metal are different in these techniques, they share the same principle that vanadium is oxidized by oxygen into vanadium slag."

"The changes in process conditions that frequently decrease the service life of refractory products provided incentive for RHI AG to develop high performance bricks, especially for non-ferrous metal applications. Innovative product development was required to determine suitable refractory products for improving lining life. At the Technology Center in Leoben, Austria, practical corrosion testing methods and facilities, including an induction furnace and rotary kiln, enable detailed comparative analysis of brick wear on a pilot scale. In tests that were carried out using a fayalite type slag, the newly developed RADEX VFG magnesia-chromite grade showed very promising results compared to the standard grades. Based on the test results, optimal refractory solutions can be recommended for this challenging industrial application and field trials can be performed directly at the customer's site.IntroductionThe complexity of metallurgical processes in the non-ferrous metal industry, and especially changes to the process conditions in combination with the diversity of metal processing furnaces ''', requires a precise understanding of each individual system for appropriate refractory product selection l2'. In addition, particular importance is focused on the specific refractory consumption being as low as possible.Another important aspect results from the global shortage of resources, which forces companies to invest in recycling processes. In the base metal industry, recycling operations have resulted in significant changes; for example, operating with two slag chemistries and process temperatures will influence the performance of previously suitable linings. The raw material mix for primary smelters has also changed, including higher levels of secondary raw materials in the smelter feed."

The past four years since the 2008 MINExpo have been a roller coaster ride for the mining industry, with highs and lows and everything in between. One of the natural consequences of this uncertainty has been a number of significant consolidations and mergers, and this trend has trickled down into the crushing industry. And while there have been some significant changes to this sector of the mining industry, many of the big players have weathered the storm. The following is a look at some of the mineral processing companies that will be at MINExpo. McLanahan Corp. McLanahan Corp. is an example of the changes in the sector. The crushing and grinding stalwart acquired Universal Engineering, expanding its traditional focus on soft mineral crushing to hard rock crushing. Blast-induced rock mass displacement can have a significant impact on ore loss & dilution. The mischaracterisation of the grade boundaries both prior to, as well as a result of blasting can lead to significant financial losses on account of ore loss and dilution. Ore dilution occurs when waste material is miscategorised as ore and sent for processing or stockpiling, diluting the run of mine head grade and recovery. Ore loss takes place when valuable mineral is miscategorised as waste and sent to the waste dumps, thus never being processed and recovered. Extensive research has been conducted at the University of Queensland over the last fifteen years to understand the impact of blast movement on ore loss and dilution. Recent outcomes of this research have developed innovative tools and techniques to measure and model blast movement. These techniques have been implemented at Ahafo gold mine in Ghana to understand blast movement dynamics and to implement solutions to reduce blast-induced ore loss and dilution. These solutions are validated through controlled trials and have been incorporated into site standard operating procedures to sustain the benefits.

Crocidolite is a well known causative agent for mesothelioma. Studies have shown that the pathogenicity of the fiber from different mines varies considerably and it has been postulated the parameter that appears most likely to account for this variation is fiber width. Epidemiological studies have shown that ‘thin’ fibers from mining areas of Western Australia and the Cape Province, in South Africa are associated with a high mesothelioma risk while exposure to ‘thick’ asbestiform amphibole fiber of the same fiber type are associated with little or no mesothelioma risk. This study is concerned with ‘thick’ Bolivian crocidolite but similar findings also probably explain the paucity of mesotheliomas in the Finnish anthophyllite, South African amosite and African Transvaal crocidolite mines. The findings from the present study suggest the incidence of mesothelioma in the three major cities of Bolivia is not significantly elevated above background even though Bolivian crocidolite has been used for the past 60 years commercially and residentially in all three cities. Although some cases of mesothelioma may have been missed due to a failure to reach hospital or a shortened natural lifespan, mesothelioma generally occurs after the age of 50, we cannot tell precisely the extent to which these were confounding. We suggest the most likely explanation for the lack of mesotheliomas despite the large populations at risk from the long and extensive residential and commercial use of crocidolite containing products, is related to an increased fiber width distribution and a concomitant reduction in the ‘Stanton fiber size’ fraction.

Newmont Mining Corporation?s Carlin (?Carlin?) operation processes roaster feed through a double rotator, dry grinding mill following secondary crushing. Metso Process Technology & Innovation (?PTI?) was involved in a review of crushing and dry grinding circuit operations in August 2009. A number of opportunities for increased throughput were identified in the PTI study. Extended plant trials were conducted in July 2010 to provide justification for possible circuit modifications and if needed, additional equipment. The trials confirmed that a finer crusher product would reduce the build-up of material ahead of the coarse grinding chamber in the double-rotator. Also revealed were material transport and airflow restrictions in the dry grinding circuit that resulted in a high circulating load. The secondary crushing plant demonstrated it was capable of reducing the amount of +¾? material in the mill feed thus increasing dry grinding throughput. However, wet and sticky feed affected screening efficiency resulting in low utilisation of the existing crusher capacity. The open circuit configuration also made it difficult to control crushing circuit product size. For the dry grinding circuit, changes in grinding media size, transfer grate design and increased airflow were recommended to reduce circulating load issues and increase circuit capacity. This paper summarises the crushing and grinding circuit review, the extended site trials performed by PTI and the improvements in dry grinding operation that resulted from this study.

In September 2009, Newmont began the commissioning of a 3 stage crushing and milling circuit at its Boddington Gold Operation in Western Australia. The Boddington ore has been recognized as one of the hardest and most abrasive ores treated to date and this played a pivotal role in the selection of crushing and HPGR technology for this operation as opposed to the more conventional SABC circuit. This paper will examine the scale up from laboratory to pilot plant and full scale operation of the crushing circuit. There have been many challenges to overcome in the first 18 months of operation; however, the HPGRs have in general met design expectations and performance is expected to improve further with ongoing design changes

The operation of SAG mills is variable over time due to their continually changing liner shape, mass and subsequent load motion. However, this tends to be poorly accommodated in liner design and mill control, with only limited compensation made for this influence, usually in the first few weeks after a new liner is installed. With ever-increasing ore competency, increasing energy costs and decreasing ore grades, simplified design and operational approaches that compromise the achievable mill efficiency are no longer adequate. This paper presents a methodology that has been developed to measure and account for the changes in mill performance as the liner wears. This involves monitoring all liner profiles ? in other words the three-dimensional liner shape - over the life of the liner, then conducting controlled surveys at different stages of the liner wear life, and correlating the mill performance to the liner profiles. The measured liner mass is modelled to provide an ongoing meaningful load mass measure that excludes the liner mass.

The 30th annual American Mining Hall of Fame Awards Banquet and Fundraiser sponsored by the Mining Foundation of the Southwest (MFSW) will be held at the JW Marriott Star Pass Resort, Tucson, AZ on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012. Each year, one living inductee, two recipients of Medals of Merit and up to five honorees from mining history are chosen by the MFSW for their outstanding contributions to the mining industry. Gregory H. Boyce will be the guest of honor, featured speaker and inductee into the American Mining Hall of Fame. Boyce, chairman and chief executive office of Peabody Energy, is being honored for his leadership in the coal industry.

"Systematic characterization of the mineralogy of massive sulfide ore deposits can provide valuable insights into ore genesis and metallurgical processing that would not be apparent otherwise. We describe a method wherein (1) normative mineral abundances are calculated from whole-rock chemical assays using an algorithm, (2) the results are cast in block models, (3) the results are then verified with automated image analysis of a subset of samples prepared as grain mounts by backscattered electron imaging and X-ray mapping on a scanning electron microscope, and (4) those verified results are integrated with textural data determined by optical microscopy.The technique is applied to the magmatic Ni-Cu-Co sulfides of the Ovoid orebody, based on geochemical assays of 3175 whole-rock samples. Three principal ore zones are defined in the Ovoid. Type I ore occurs in the center of the deposit; it is magnetite-rich and pyrrhotite-poor with intermediate contents of pentlandite and chalcopyrite. Type II ore surrounds Type I ore and is pentlanditechalcopyrite- rich with intermediate contents of pyrrhotite and magnetite. Type III ore occurs at the base and along the outer periphery of the northern part of the orebody; it is pyrrhotite-rich and chalcopyrite- poor with an intermediate content of pentlandite, and a low-to-intermediate content of magnetite. La caractérisation systématique de la minéralogie des gîtes de sulfures massifs peut fournir des indications précieuses sur la genèse des minerais et le traitement métallurgique qui ne seraient pas disponibles par d’autres méthodes. Nous décrivons un procédé par lequel (1) un algorithme est utilisé pour calculer l’abondance de minéraux normatifs à partir d’analyses lithogéochimiques, (2) les résultats sont exprimés dans des blocs diagrammes, (3) les résultats sont par la suite validés par analyse d’image automatisée sur un microscope électronique à balayage en électrons rétrodiffusés et par cartographie en rayons X sur des échantillons constitués de grains montés en résine, et (4) les résultats de cette validation sont combinés aux données texturales obtenues par microscopie optique.Cette technique est appliquée aux sulfures magmatiques de Ni-Cu-Co du gisement Ovoïde, en utilisant les analyses géochimiques de 3175 échantillons de roche totale. L’Ovoïde comprend trois types de minerai. Le type I est situé au centre du gisement; il est riche en magnétite et pauvre en pyrrhotite avec des quantités intermédiaires de pentlandite et de chalcopyrite. Current AG and SAG mill circuits have continued the trend to larger, fewer mills. These large mills place a significant additional load on the discharge systems and it has become imperative that the designs of these mill discharge systems are evaluated carefully to ensure maximum efficiency and have the capacity to be able to handle the increased mill discharge volumes. The current generation of multiphysics modeling tools allow a detailed analysis of AG and SAG mill discharge performance. The combination of Discrete Element Method modeling and Computational Fluid Dynamics allows the designer to model in detail all aspects of a mill discharge performance. This includes a detailed description of the build-up of solids and slurry in a mill discharge, the recycle of material back into the mill through the grates, the relative wear rates and the occurrence of overloading at the pinch points. These tools allow intelligent decisions to be made regarding the type of discharge arrangement, pan lifter geometry, and discharge cone design, so as to ensure that the discharge is capable of handling the duties required for a specific installation. This paper details the current state of the art in these modeling tools, and provides an overview of some recent applications.

"SGS Minerals Services (Lakefield, Ontario site) has conducted a number of developmental and pilot programs that examined methods for the beneficiation, extraction and recovery of lithium from a variety of spodumene containing hard rock sources. An overview of the beneficiation programs is presented separately by Aghamirian, Mohns, Grammatikopoulos, Imeson & Pearse (2011). The focus of this discussion will be the hydrometallurgical steps involved in producing a high grade lithium carbonate (Li2CO3) sample from the spodumene concentrate. SGS has applied the standard Li2CO3 hydrometallurgical flow sheet to a number of spodumene concentrates and has determined that all of these samples respond in a similar manner to the process and produce a final product having a Li2CO3 grade of >99.5%. The standard process is sufficiently robust to accommodate the observed variability in the concentrates that have been tested. Advantage of one spodumene deposit over another will thus be gained through process optimization and innovation. Optimization at the beneficiation stage and at the hydrometallurgical stage must be considered. Some aspects of the process optimization of the hydrometallurgical flow sheet will be presented.INTRODUCTION The current activity in the exploration, development, and mining of lithium based minerals is due in large part to the key role that this metal plays in the rechargeable battery industry (U.S. Geological Survey, 2011). Lithium battery technologies are widely applied in a range of portable electronic consumer products. The expanding development and production of hybrid and fully electric vehicles has contributed to the increased interest in finding and developing new lithium sources in order to meet the expected demand from the lithium battery industry. Lithium may be sourced from continental brines (sub-surface salars), hard rock minerals (pegmatite, spodumene), hectorite clay deposits, geothermal brines and oilfield brines. Currently the majority of the lithium products are produced from Li brines. The four major lithium producing countries are Chile, Australia, China, and Argentina (U.S. Geological Survey, 2009; Roskill, 2009). These countries accounted for 97.6% of the total lithium produced in 2010."
