The country ranks among world?s top five nations for its commodity reserves of coal and iron ore. Interestingly, only small part of country's landmass has been explored that provides opportunity for future substantial mineral discoveries. India plans to double infrastructure investments to US$ 1trillion. Despite the challenges in infrastructure project implementation, mining sector remains a key driver of demand growth for commodities in the years to come with a good prospect to grow in future.

In the current climate of changing the approach to mining and treatment of mineral resources, processing technologies are being developed that require little maintenance and are economically as well as ecologically sustainable. This may also involve the development of entirely new ways of ore processing. One promising approach is to use bioleaching for the pretreatment of gold refractory ores to cyanidation. Capital costs for vat bioleaching of concentrates and ores are very high and cannot be applied for small or medium-size deposits. IRGIREDMET JSC carried out bio heap leaching test work on refractory ore samples from three Russian deposits. Following this biological treatment a combination of flotation, vat bioleaching, and cyanidation are used to recover gold. After heap bioleaching, gold recovery was 75-80 per cent. It was found that efficiency of heap bioleaching process depends on ore feed size. High duration of this process is another feature and it lasts for about a year. This process can be also used for carbonates in the combination with other process during which acid generation occurs. The results of our studies have shown that this technology is amenable for refractory gold ores. Its introduction allows an increase gold recovery and to solve a number of environmental problems. Copper recovery via Solvent Extraction (SX) process is a well-known technique, which is practiced commercially for approximately 40 years. The main advantages of the SX process are: an absence of using high temperatures (not more than 50oC), complete recycling of barren solutions, very high selectivity at removal and purification of metals, metal conversion to a form, suitable for easy subsequent recovery. Despite the wide acceptance of Solvent Extraction, it does have some shortcomings, namely SX employs large quantities of volatile organic substances. This leads to huge plant ?footprint? of SX circuits. The SX is very sensitive to low temperatures and quantity of total suspended solids in feed solutions and this causes bad phase disengagement times and therefore poor process performance. And most important ? low grade solutions (with copper concentrations below 1 gram per litre) are very unattractive for treatment via Solvent Extraction process, because capital costs for SX plants are not a direct function of copper tenor in the feed. The combined process with Ion Exchange (IX) and Solvent Extraction ? further called IX/SX by IONTECH Engineering was developed. This combination eliminates SX negative characteristics shown above. The key findings of the IX/SX process are; (1) recovery of copper from pregnant leach solutions with metal concentrations, varying on a broad range; (2) can be operate effectively with very low-graded copper pregnant leach solutions; (3) the construction of large ponds for pre-filtration of the pregnant leach solutions is not necessary; (4) working with turbid solutions and solutions containing large quantities of suspended solids; (5) winter operation without troubles; (6) strongly reduces organic losses; (7) technological approach lead to plant sizes reducing. This paper reviews the main stages of the combined IX/SX process, the applications for metal recovery and introduces projects where the process is applied. Key findings of the process are also presented. A comprehensive technical comparison between processes has been carried out. This paper also evaluates the advantages of using combined IX/SX technology as a purification and separation step in copper production process, with the aim of further increasing the overall copper recovery and to ensure that a suitable copper concentration in the advanced electrolyte is achieved. The implementation of a Ion Exchange (IX) process in the classic Solvent Extraction-Electrowinning process(SX/EW) is found to be beneficial for processing of pregnant leach solutions both from spent and new copper heaps and dumps, acid mine drainage and other industrial streams without any preconditioning as well as in terms of achieving improved recoveries and copper cathode quality.

Large-scale separation or flotation cells, used in the primary extraction in the oil sands industry, are integral parts of the overall process of bitumen extraction. Good regulation of the interface level between the bitumen froth and the middlings in these cells can result in a significant improvement in bitumen recovery and throughput, and heavily influence process economics. Automatic control of such industrial processes presents challenges such as multi-phase flow dynamics, variable process gain and time delays, poor quality of measurements and significant disturbances. This paper details a case study application of development of multiple models of the dynamics of the interface level and the design of model predictive controllers (MPC) for a separation cell process. A Model predictive controller (MPC) using linear models is designed and implemented in real time on an industrial separation cell. The industrial implementation results show that the MPC scheme provides significant benefits over the current operations which use a PID controller. The benefits include significant reduction in the variance of the interface level resulting in higher bitumen recovery and smoother downstream operation plus energy savings due to reduced underflow pump speed.

Declining gold grades, mineralogical complexity of ore bodies, increasing input costs, more stringent conditions in the licenses to operate, and uncertain gold price dynamics combine to exert significant ongoing pressure on margins of gold producers. Innovative approaches of extracting the metal from its ores are required to realize value from existing and future assets. In a conventional gold processing plant, size reduction of mined ore to produce floatable or leachable product is a significant cost contributor. A step change in cost reduction will be attained if radically energy efficient grinding approaches can be developed, replacing tumbling mills. In the path towards that goal, some quick wins are possible through waste rejection before grinding, and pre-treatment of mill feed to reduce grinding energy demands. Gold locked in complex mineralizations puts pressure on margins by increasing cost per oz (typically high $/t and low metal recoveries) in the hydrometallurgical steps. Gold miners are primarily price takers. The current narrow range of gold uses (predominantly investment and jewellery) is not an entirely desirable state. Some diversification into commercial uses would potentially be a price stabilizer. In this paper, promising research directions, some not always fully explored in the gold metallurgy research space, are highlighted to stimulate radical innovation for substantial value enhancements. The author strongly believes a shift from a traditionally conservative and incremental innovation approach to a more aggressive one, across all aspects of the gold metallurgy value stream (processes to products), is what the industry needs. The beneficiation study of low quality pyrophyllite is conducted to enhance the value of it by selective grinding. In mining stage, the main gangue mineral is quartz, and the content of quartz in ore has an adverse effect on the quality of pyrophyllite. Using the huge difference in hardness between quartz and pyrophyllite, the selective grinding is accomplished using stirred ball mill. As a result, a finer pyrophyllite particle can be easily separated from coarser quartz particle by simple size classification, and the content of Al2O3 of fine particle smaller than 45um increased largely. It means that the pyrophyllite particle is ground selectively compared to the quartz particle, and the quality of pyrophyllite is enhanced.

This contribution deals with bubble adhesion on particle surface which consists of three steps ? the liquid film thinning, the film rupture and expansion of the three phase contact (TPC). Our attention is devoted to the third step ? to the description of the TPC expansion. Three-phase contact line expansion can be theoretically described using hydrodynamic and molecular-kinetic models. Both of these models were originally developed for the interaction of the bubble with horizontal plane in pure water. Our experiments deal mainly with the interaction of the bubble with the inclined plane in the solution of surface active agents. It was proved experimentally that molecular-kinetic model corresponds also to these conditions and this model was used for the description of the TPC expansion. The model is based on the theoretical description of the bubble contact angle on the three-phase interface. These contact angles change dramatically from 180o to equilibium (Young) contact angle close to 90o. Modificated ADSA method is used for the calculation of the contact angle. This method utilizes the Laplace equation of the capillarity; the bubble profile and the contact angle are evaluated using the set of experimental points around the edge of the bubble. The comparison of the experimental and calculated bubble profile shows a good agreement. The aim of the project is to describe the process of the TPC expansion during the adhesion of the bubble with the diameter up to 1 mm. Inclined planes were used instead of an experimental solid particle. Our experiments were provided in the solution of surface active compounds. The process of the adhesion was recorded using high-speed digital camera and images were evaluated using the image analysis software NIS-Elements. The production of minerals for economic use is a two-stage process, involving mining to extract the mineral from the ground, and processing to convert the mineral into a marketable product. Generally, mining and processing have been viewed as self-contained entities. Both have separate objectives, separate cost centres and key performance indicators (KPIs) that do not reflect the customer/supplier relationships that inherently exist. However, mining and processing operations are inter-connected and therefore intimately inter-related with the performance of one operation affecting the performance of another. Optimizing each stage separately without considering the whole system often misses potential economic benefits and energy savings. During the past fifteen years, the authors have been involved in implementing a holistic methodology ?Mine to Mill Process Integration and Optimisation (Mine to Mill PIO)? to maximize the overall profitability of the operation rather than just optimizing any individual process in a mining operation. Metso Process Technology and Innovation (PTI), along with their project partners, have conducted several projects to significantly increase their production- generating typically 5% to 20% higher throughput and improve the overall mine and concentrator performance through PIO methodology. This proven methodology has applications ranging from greenfield projects to long-standing operations with AG/SAG, HPGR or conventional grinding circuits. This paper explains the Mine to Mill PIO methodology and discusses the benefits of such an approach on the energy consumption, the overall costs and benefits of mining operations. The paper also summarizes several case studies illustrating the use of PTI methodology in a variety of applications. In recent years many creative technologies are applied to SLon vertical ring and pulsating high gradient magnetic separators. SLon-2500 and SLon-3000 vertical ring and pulsating high gradient magnetic separators are created towards larger scale. Through optimizing the magnetic system and lowering the electric current density, their energy consumption is obviously dropped. New magnetic matrixes are developed to raise the beneficial efficiency of valuable minerals. Special SLon vertical ring and pulsating high gradient magnetic separators are developed which can treat coarser particles of 0-5 mm. Through these technology creations, the mineral processing efficiency of SLon magnetic separators is further raised and their processing cost dropped. Therefore, they have been found wider applications. SLon-2500 applied in Essar Steel of India. In 2007, Essar Steel did a test on its Kirandul hematite ore with SLon magnetic separator and got very good results. The feed grade is 59.77%Fe, after SLon one roughing and one scavenging, the total iron concentrate grade is 65.00%Fe and iron recovery 93.86%. In 2008-2010, the company bought 10 SLon-2500 magnetic separators to treat such iron ores. In 2010 the first SLon-3000 was applied to processing ilmenite. The magnetite-ilmenite deposit is located in Pan Zhi Hua, Si Chuan Province of China. The ore processing flow sheet is: Drum low intensity magnetic separator is used to take out magnetite, and then the SLon-3000 is used to recover ilmenite for roughing. The mags of the SLon-3000 are further cleaned by flotation. The SLon-3000 average operational results are: feed grade 9.52%TiO2, mags grade 17.43%TiO2, mags mass ratio 41.01%, TiO2 recovery 75.09%, non-mags grade 4.02% TiO2, non-mags mass ratio 58.99%. SLon magnetic separators Applied to treat 0-5mm limonite: The feed of SLon magnetic separator is usually 0-2 mm which needs to be ground by ball mill. As many Chinese iron ores are poor grades, if we can throw part of tails before grinding, the grinding cost will be greatly reduced. In 2010, a SLon-1500 and a SLon-2000 were specially built to treat 0-5 mm limonite. The feed grade is 26.51%Fe, mags grade 53.20%Fe, iron recovery 64.26, and tails grade 13.66% Fe. SLon-2500 applied to purify quartz. In 2009, a SLon-2500 magnetic separator was applied to purify quartz in Shan Xi province. Its feed is 0-1mm quartz which contains 0.15%-0.25%Fe2O3, the designed non-mags grade need to be less 0.08% Fe2O3. The production results of SLon-2500 non-mags are 0.05-0.06% Fe2O3, much better than the designed data. SLon applied in Si Jia Ying Iron Mine to recover hematite. Si Jia Ying is a big oxidized iron mine located in He Bei Province of China. In 2005-2010, a plant annually treating 10 million tons of oxidized iron ore was built in which 39 SLon magnetic separators are applied. The total flow sheet results are: Feed grade 30.44%Fe, iron concentrate grade 66%Fe, iron recovery 80%Fe, tails grade 9.65Fe%. SLon applied to recover specularite. Li Lou Iron Mine in An Hui Province of China built a plant annually processing 5 million tons of iron ore in 2010-2011. 25 SLon-2000 magnetic separators are applied to recover specularite. The total flow sheet results are: Feed grade 31.65%Fe, iron concentrate grade 65%Fe, iron recovery 80%Fe, tails grade 10.37%Fe. SLon applied in Da Hong Shan Iron Mine. Da Hong Shan Iron Mine is located in Yun Nan province of China. It treats 4.5 million tons of oxidized iron ore annually. 15 SLon-2000 magnetic separators are applied to recover hematite. The total flow sheet results are: Feed grade 35.61%Fe, iron concentrate grade 64.95%Fe, iron recovery 74.08%Fe, tails grade 15.55%. In the EU-region, the automatically operated approximately 200 (rotating hammer) shredder plants processing large technical equipment (end-of-life vehicles, large household appliances) annually produces 8-9 million tons of non-metallic grinded by-product, which ends in landfills, without recovery. Although this by-product is organic material, still contains large amount of metal components worth recycling. These operations, such as shredding and processing end of life vehicles or mixed metal components are a growing market and it is become more potential if EU directive 2002/96/EC will become obligatory for new member and candidate countries and they have to apply EU regulations. Eddy current separators (ECS) are one of the most important units of separation of non-ferrous metals from insulators in waste recycling. The product of ECS processing of shredded ELV?s is usually a mixture of Al, Cu, Brass and stainless steel. This mixture has relatively low price on the market, while purified metal products are required by smelters for which shredder operators are able to get even higher price. Our aim at University of Miskolc was to find solution producing pure metal products using dry separation processes. Authors are presenting a possible solution, using ECS. Institute of Raw Material Preparation and Environmental Processing possesses an ECS, equipped with 305 mm wide belt, and a concentric magnetic rotor. The subject of our work was to investigate the behaviour of model particles with different shape, conductivity (aluminium and brass), orientation and size in order to separate Al and Brass. We used model particles with similar shapes of shredder plant originated ones. The magnetic flux and magnetic frequency was constant and derived by the design of the rotor. During our research work, belt speed and rotor speed of ECS were varied. The particle distance and trajectory caused by throwing was determined and the results are reported in this paper.

Spent automobile catalyst is an important secondary resource of PGMs (platinum group metals) and the recovery is significant. Various methods of recovery technology have been reported and applied in practical production, including pyro- and hydrometallurgical processes. Since the grade of PGMs in the catalysts is so low, approximately 0.5 wt. %, the present recycling technologies require high energy-consumption, it is of great significance to enrich the PGMs with some energy saving physical separation methods as a pretreatment. Automobile catalyst is usually composed of cordierite phase as a substrate and alumina phase, with PGMs, which covers the cordierite phase. We adopted the quenching pretreatment, one method of thermal shock, to generate micro-cracks between the two phases and separate the alumina phase from cordierite. Quenching was carried out by heating the catalysts in an electric furnace of different temperatures followed by rapid soaking into cold water. It was found that the phase boundary between alumina and cordierite was broken in the quenching and selective separation (detachment) of alumina from the cordierite could be achieved in the following surface grinding. The effect of quenching was checked by microscopic observation, hardness measurement, and chemical analysis. This paper figures out the stress formula of the quenching process, which is largely connected with layer thickness and temperature gradient by using an FEM (Finite Element Method) simulation and clarifies the mechanism of crack generation in the quenching process. In the current energy-sensitive world, sustainable development in the mineral industry will require new, better and more efficient processes. Novel comminution methods, which offer the prospect of achieving the required outcomes of size reduction and mineral liberation at lower energy consumption, are continually being sought. In the past five years, extensive research using high voltage pulse electrical comminution technology has been carried out at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC), in collaboration with selFrag AG. The major outcome of this research is the development of the concept of pre-weakening ore particles by electrical comminution procedures to reduce the energy consumption in the downstream grinding circuit. The research has also verified the preferential liberation of valuable minerals by electrical comminution. Given the advantages, several potential applications of electrical comminution in the mineral industry are proposed, including AG/SAG mill feed pre-weakening, pebble treatment, ball mill feed pre-weakening, early recovery of the liberated valuable minerals, crack/micro crack generation for improved leaching, and smelter slag treatment. For the mineral industry to utilize electrical comminution, two emerging issues identified from the research need to be address. They are the energy consumption by electrical comminution in the locked cycle treatment and the facilities scale up necessary to move this technology from the laboratory to the plant. Around 90% of the chromite resources of India are concentrated in the Boula-Nuasahi Sukinda belt of Orissa state. In order to conserve these valuable ore resources strategically, several companies established chrome ore beneficiation plants in this region. The general beneficiation process in these plants consists of gravity unit operations such as Floatex density separator, spiral, wet shaking table etc. Most of these gravity circuits suffer huge losses of valuable minerals in the tailing. Any attempt towards decreasing these losses would not only increase the limited reserves in India but also make the economics of the operations more attractive. Apart from the liberation phenomena, in many of the operating plants considerable quantity of values are lost in the tailings, due to inconsistent feed quality, inappropriate selection of operating and design parameters. Mineral engineers in this regard have to play a proactive and continuous role to improve the performance of all separating units by modifying even small changes based on tests conducted in laboratory under controlled conditions followed by attempts to make necessary changes in the plant. For such improvements, accurate data collection and proper data interpretation followed by making necessary change which is implementable in an operating plant play a very critical role in performance of the circuit. Databank collected over a period of time under various conditions would also help in overcoming the future problems related to either variation in the feed characteristics or specific demand by metallurgical industries. The above concept was adopted in one of the operating chromite beneficiation plant at Sukinda. The approach adopted and practical problems encountered during the study were reported in this paper. The result of trial campaign has shown that, an overall product assaying 30.2% Cr2O3 from the feed (18% Cr2O3 ) can be produced to in single stage. A good deposit of high sulphur coals of tertiary origin is existent in North eastern region of India. These coals are known to have indifferent characteristics in comparison to other Indian coals. The general Physico-chemical characteristics are low ash and high volatile matter, calorific value and sulphur content. Sulphur in these coals (70-95% of organic) is mostly affixed to the structure of the coal. Owing to the stringent environmental regulations, the utilization of these coals has severe limitations due to high sulphur content. In the present investigation, sulphur incorporation in to these coals has been discussed along with possible organic sulphur functionalities. The various desulphurization techniques carried out for removing sulphur from these coals have been discussed. Two step oxidative desulphurization processes has been found to be most efficient for organic sulphur removal along with mineral matter and potential toxic elements. Electrostatic separation is a dry separation technique usable for many applications in the mining- and recycling industries. At the Chair of Mineral Processing intensified research has been done on this topic during the last years. One challenge was to measure the triboelectric charging of fine mineral particles in a triboelectric charging device consisting of an electrically insulated polyethylene rotor/stator assembly. These tests, performed on monomineralic samples, were accomplished in a climate chamber. It was shown that charging of minerals not only depends on rotor speed, feed rate and atmospheric circumstances but also on the properties of the applied electrostatic field. Tests on pure calcite in contact with the polyethylene rotor/stator system resulted in specific triboelectric charges up to +10 nC/g at low relative humidity. With more water present in the surrounding atmosphere, these charging values decreased significantly. However, at higher relative humidity, triboelectric charge values could be maintained after an electrostatic field of positive polarity was applied. Similarly, charging behavior was found with other hydrophilic minerals. The idea behind all these tests was to find the largest charging difference between minerals occurring together in a deposit and to be able to charge them oppositely, assuming that this means good sort ability in an electrostatic separator. The results gained from these investigations are shown. After having obtained many results on charging pure minerals, it became interesting to test the applicability of the charging tendencies on electrostatic separation of fines <100 µm. In order to do so, a separator for fine polymineralic powders was developed, constructed and combined with the triboelectric charging device, all being set up in a climate chamber. This new so-called coax-separator is presented along with first test-results.

Electrokinetic/permeable reactive barrier system is a promising in situ soil and ground water remediation technique to reduce toxic NO3- into less toxic NH4+. Using granular zero-valent iron (Fe0) as a reductant, the first objective of this study was to investigate the influence of the solid-liquid ratio and aqueouspHon NO3- reduction. The results obtained from a series of batch experiments showed that NO3- reduction was enhanced by either increasing solid-liquid ratio or decreasing aqueous pH. Based on insights obtained from batch experiments, the second objective of this study was set to design the remediation conditions of the electrokinetic/Fe0permeable reactive barrier system to maximize the NO3- reduction efficiency. Experimental results showed that the effectiveness of the system strongly depended on the Fe0 percentage in the reactive barrier, the pH in the anode reservoir, and the applied voltage, which were consistent with the results obtained from batch experiments. Under optimized treatment conditions, nearly 100 % NO3-was reduced into NH4+ in the permeable reactive barrier and collected in the cathode reservoir. Insights obtained from this study provided fundamental information on roles each of remediation design parameters plays, and will be useful to optimize the remediation conditions. Flotation process is based on the formation of primary collector-based supramolecular associates at the mineral surface and within the pulp. Supra molecular chemistry allows studying within a common framework, all kinds of molecular associates, from dimers to large assemblies, resulting from spontaneous association of a large number of interacting components of the flotation system, where the collective action of non covalent bonds can have an important role. Self-organization of supra molecular assemblies in the flotation process can be controlled by modifying the chemical structure of the collector, the nature and arrangement of functional group in it, by introducing secondary agents (SA) into the process, to adjust the interaction between the collector and the surface and to control the hydrophobicity of the adsorption bed. This offers broad opportunities to build supramolecular assemblies to improve the efficiency of flotation. Besides, the more complex is the system, the weaker are the interactions, that determine its behavior. This powerful factor still is not employed deliberately to control the flotation process. Organophosphorus compounds (OPC) - dialkyl phosphoric acids whose radicals contain ethoxylated groups ? are considered as nanocompounds, that can be used in building supramolecular assemblies. The presence in an OPC molecule of functional groups (P=O, P (O) O-, P (O) OH), ethoxylated groups, and aromatic rings is the basis for the formation of stable supramolecular associates. Gross formula: C54H94KO16P. Molecular weight is 1069.39. Phosphoryl anion has a regular tetrahedral structure with the angle of 109.5°. Lengths of -P-O- bonds in a PN molecule are 1.7345Å; length of the hydrocarbonic radical C42-C72 = 33.942Å. In an alkaline environment, PN is in the form of the anion, in an acidic environment ? in the form of the polycation due to protonation of the oxygen in the EO group. Chem Office software suite was used to generate three-dimensional images of an OPC molecule in acidic and alkaline environments, to reveal the OPC geometry (bond lengths, valence angles, aliphatic radical length), to identify the collector&apos;s binding sites with the mineral surface, to find the most stable and energy-efficient molecular conformations of an OPC molecule and its complexes with minerals under various conditions. Mechanisms of interaction between OPCs and the mineral surfaces are different. In ores whose minerals are dominated by ionic bonds (fluorite), the interaction mainly involves the anionic form of the collector; in ores, whose minerals are dominated by covalent bonds - the oxygen of the phosphoryl group (donor-acceptor interaction) and the oxygen of the ethoxylated groups. This difference is responsible for the formation of spatial associates with different surface layer structures. Introduction of supramolecular chemistry concepts into the analysis of flotation phenomena and mechanisms can become an effective tool for better understanding the flotation process and offers new means of consistently improving its effectiveness.

In looking to the future of mineral processing the focus is typically on improved processing units. Basically it is a search for an elusive wonder machine that could revolutionise the economy of mining: the sorter that strips 50% of the ore with only a few % loss of value; the comminution device that uses 5% of the energy while producing fully liberated particles; or the recovery device capable of producing a 99% recovery at 99% grade. These aspirations are propounded against a reality backdrop of sorters rusting in back yards, mill throughputs below design and varying by 30%, cyclones flaring and cut-sizes fluctuating, mediocre recoveries and soaring processing costs. This disconnect between aspiration and reality appears, to these authors at least, to be a mighty chasm. Moreover, it remains one over which we are expected to magically leap rather than methodically bridge. Indeed one may be forgiven for thinking that should such a wonder machine come along, taking advantage of it would be highly improbable. Questions would inevitably emerge on how to feed the correct material, how to cope with the wide variability of feeds, how to control such advanced equipment and how to handle the new product from such a machine. It is likely these questions might lie unanswered, or more regrettably, unasked. It is generally accepted that as an industry we are exceedingly unlikely to teleport from the current status quo to an entirely new reality in a single flash. It is our thesis that the probability of these magical machines materialising is remote, and even if they miraculously appeared, we simply wouldn?t know what to do with them. Rather, it is our contention, that a step change will only arise through a staircase rather than from a single giant leap. We should focus on building those steps and linking them together into a firm structure ? a workable mineral processing circuit. This paper addresses the alternative of a coherent set of modest but significant improvements, integrated to produce the step change we desire: essentially, a reduction of processing energy to below 40%, which we believe is achievable without recourse to any mystical machines. A key underlying capability to designing these dramatically improved processes, is the weaving of independent process models into a coherent circuit simulation, in order to design the new generation of mineral processing circuits. Loussavaara-KiirunavaaraAB?s (LKAB) iron ore mine, Kiirunavaara, is of magnetite type and associated with apatite, a calcium phosphate mineral. Rare earth elements (REE) have been found in connection with the apatite but also in other minerals. An apatite concentrate was produced by flotation, in order to investigate the possibilities to extract REE from the apatite by hydrometallurgical means. The content of rare earth elements calculated as oxides (REO) was 0.44% in the concentrate. Initially, leaching was done with large excess of sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, and nitric acid to study the REE solubility with different acids. In sulfuric acid, the leaching recoveries of the different REE varied between 35% and 69%. The reasons for the relative low recoveries, were that the rare earth elements precipitated together with huge amounts of gypsum, that was formed during leaching. However, both hydrochloric- and nitric acid gave almost complete extraction of the REE into solution. Analysis of the small leaching residue obtained, revealed, that mainly the light REE remained in the residue indicating that a small part of the light REE were present in the concentrate, in some acid, insoluble mineral other than apatite. With the aim to separate the REE from the phosphoric acid, the solutions from hydrochloric- and nitric acid leaching were neutralized to a pH of approximately 2 with ammonia. During neutralization, REE were precipitated as phosphates with good recoveries and a concentrate of 10.5% REO suitable for further upgrading was obtained, while the remaining solution can be used for fertilizer production. In further solvent extraction studies, it was shown, that after re-dissolution the REE could be effectively extracted by Cyanex 923, thus allowing for purification from calcium and phosphate ions. The existing construction and demolition (C and D) waste recycling technologies and standards have been essentially focused on the production and use of coarse recycled aggregates. Very few papers focus on the production of recycled sand, although some previous results show that fine aggregates fraction represents around 40 to 60% (in mass) of the Brazilian waste and it is usually used as road sub-base or disposed in landfills. The quality of the recycled aggregate is strictly related to the content of porous and low strength phases, mainly the patches of cement remaining on recycled aggregate surface. Some technologies have already been described in the literature, even though, to the moment none of these technologies has clearly succeeded in reaching the large market available. This paper presents a summary of the main properties of the sand produced from C and D waste by tertiary crushing at vertical shaft impact crusher (VSI). Additionally mineral processing technologies were applied on the attained product, such as gravity concentration by shaking table and spirals and removal of cement paste by attrition. The main properties of recycled sand are discussed and compared to the previous C and D waste, respectively: particle size distribution, particle shape, chemical composition, cement paste content and porosity. The results demonstrates that the crushing allowed producing a VSI-sand with low porosity and water absorption due to the increasing on the content of silicates from natural rock phases and increasing liberation between these phases and porous cement paste; the particles from the attained product presented also a better shape (sphericity and aspect ratio). The attrition tests assayed on VSI recycled fine aggregates accomplished a further selective disaggregation of cement paste and other porous materials - the porosity was reduced from 10% to 7%. The concentration by shaking table at narrow sieve fractions led to a product with low porosity and reduced content of cement paste, however, concentration on spirals did not succeed since separation was performed essentially by the size of the particles. The heavy product from shaking table represented almost 75% in weight and has less than 60% recovery of CaO+LOI, and expressive reduction on porosity. The aim of producing sand from construction and demolition waste through mineral processing unit operations changes the recycling approach and contributes for up cycling the recycled sand. The exhaustion of sand deposits on Brazilian large centers, the increasing price and the construction boom encourages the development of alternative materials as construction raw material.
