Most metallic iron in the world is produced in blast furnaces from different feed stocks – sinter, lump ore and pellets. Sinter is the main iron-containing feed to the blast furnace and can constitute up to 70–85 per cent of the total ferrous burden. As sinter quality is a key element for stable blast furnace operation, the textural, chemical and physical characteristics of the sinter are very important. Two major factors that affect sinter strength are mineralogy and porosity. This study utilised optical image analysis (OIA) to characterise sinter mineralogy, and the results were compared to those obtained by manual point counting under the optical microscope.Two major mineral characteristics of iron ore sinter are the presence of primary (unreacted) and secondary (derived from melt) hematite. Standard OIA, which is based on RGB thresholding, is not able to distinguish them as they have the same reflectivity; however, primary and secondary hematite in iron ore sinter have a different morphology. The CSIRO-developed OIA software Mineral4/Recognition4 has a unique feature to identify various textures/morphologies of the same mineral. Together with other capabilities of the Mineral4/Recognition4 software, this feature was used to identify different types of hematite and silico-ferrite of calcium and aluminium and other common sinter phases, such as magnetite, larnite, glass and remnant aluminosilicates.A visual comparison of the sinter mineralogy present in optical photomicrographs and that present in the mineral maps created automatically by the Mineral4 module of the CSIRO software confirmed the accuracy of the automated mineral identification.CITATION:Donskoi, E, Hapugoda, S, Lu, L, Poliakov, A, Peterson, M and Haileslassie, A, 2015. The application of high-resolution seismic reflection to map structure and/or mineralisation in hard rock environments has progressed significantly in the last decade. Improvements in equipment, field practice, processing and understanding has seen the seismic reflection technique emerge as a cost-effective tool for high-resolution three-dimensional structural and lithology mapping to depths far greater and with superior accuracy than other more conventional geophysical techniques.This paper outlines results and preliminary interpretation of 2D and 3D seismic reflection surveys aimed at defining fault zones and locations for quartz load development in favourable host lithologies at the Cracow low-sulfidation epithermal gold system in Queensland, Australia.As this is possibly the first time that high-resolution seismic reflection data has been used to define the structurally-controlled location of low-sulfidation epithermal gold mineralisation, an important aspect of this work was the derisking or due diligence steps taken prior to commissioning the full 3D surveys at each site. This included full wave sonic logging, vertical seismic profiling and trial 2D lines. Interpretation of the 2D profiles and the drilling of interpreted structure provided the confidence to proceed with the full 3D survey.The advantage of collecting 3D data extends beyond ensuring that the received reflections are located correctly in 3D space. Ore deposits of rare earth elements (REE) in South-East Asia are classified into four types: carbonatite, allanite, ion-adsorption and placer. Occurrences of the carbonatite deposits are confined almost exclusively to the Red River Fault Zone of northern Vietnam. Since the carbonatites contain dominantly REE fluorocarbonates (eg bastnasite) and lesser amounts of monazite, they are rich in light REE but poor in heavy REE. The ion-adsorption type deposits and prospects were found in Myanmar, Vietnam and Thailand. The ion-adsorption ores generally show lower REE grades than those of the carbonatite type and placer deposits; however, they could be enriched in HREE, which are more precious and scarce commodities than LREE. The ores consist of weathered granites with a significant amount of ion-exchangeable REE, which are extracted by using a dilute electrolyte solution. The ion-exchangeable REE are likely to be sourced from REE fluorocarbonates, allanite and titanite because these minerals are relatively susceptible to weathering and release REE3+ ions into soil water. In contrast, monazite and xenotime are resistant to chemical weathering and could form placer ores. Placer monazite and xenotime have been processed as by-products of placer Sn, Zr or Ti in Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia, although the current production is small.CITATION:Sanematsu, K, 2015. Enumerating active sea floor hydrothermal sites has been a challenge since their discovery almost 40 years ago. High-temperature hydrothermal sites are readily discoverable, primarily by detecting mineral-laden plumes, but working at these sites poses severe environmental and operational difficulties. Low-temperature vent fields, which may represent waning of venting from high-temperature systems, may be more accessible but are more difficult to locate. Over the last decade, however, oxidation-reduction potential (ORP; aka Eh) sensors capable of detecting minute concentrations of reduced hydrothermal chemicals have been successfully used to pinpoint such fields. In this extended abstract, we use ORP anomalies observed during continuous (towed sensor) plume surveys to estimate site frequency along four intermediate- to fast-spreading ridge sections. From these data, we estimate site frequencies between five and 16/100 km for these ridge sections. Previous camera surveys on the fast-spreading East Pacific Rise support these frequencies. These rates are much greater than the frequency of ~0.5–5/100 km, generally increasing with spreading rate, derived from well-surveyed ridge sections in the InterRidge database (InterRidge, 2014). Remote and at times harsh conditions have always made it difficult for exploration, but modern explorers also have to deal with cover, numerous technologies, an explosion of data and critical early community engagement. Mining deals with the reality of moving and breaking thousands of tonnes of rock each day to extract what can be a very minor component of economic value, and, furthermore, society expects that this will be done in a clean and sustainable manner. The exploration and mining challenges appear disparate, but they are intimately related.Although not widely appreciated, both exploration and mining have a long tradition of innovation. Over the last 50 years, major step changes in exploration have resulted from radical advances in our understanding of ore forming processes, new geophysical, geochemical and remote sensing technologies, and new ways to integrate and interrogate data. Over a more extended period, close to 100 years, mining has developed bulk surface and underground methods, selective extraction through flotation and leaching and global positioning system–geographic information system control systems that collectively facilitate mining at a massive scale. And yet, in spite of these successes and the boom that we have enjoyed in the last ten years, the industry is under pressure and the need for innovation and change is paramount.The major drivers for innovation are the need for increased quality in discoveries and mines and the need to interact effectively with communities and jurisdictions such that the benefits of quality mines are recognised and enjoyed widely.We are still making new discoveries around the Pacific Rim and elsewhere, but many argue that the quality – grade and accessibility – of these discoveries is decreasing. The net result is that explorers are delivering resources and reserves for development at lower grades and with higher capital and operating costs than current operations. For mining, the increasing age of many existing operations contributes to increasing costs, which, when combined with decreasing cut-offs and lower grades, also results in declining quality. The combined picture does not look good.Just as the pressure to improve performance and margins in the face of declining inputs increases, we are simultaneously faced with increasing societal demands for improved environmental performance and sustainable practices. This is most apparent at the local, community level, where opposition ultimately leads to delays or even cancellation of new projects. Newly published models suggest that some orogenic and Carlin-style gold deposits formed by the remobilisation of trace elements during interaction with hydrothermal or metamorphic fluids from early sedimentary pyrite that was enriched in Au, As and Te. The released trace elements are transported by the fluids to favourable trap sites where they are deposited. Therefore, early enrichment of Au, As and Te in source rocks (particularly in pyritic black shale) can be crucial to the formation of orogenic and Carlin-style gold deposits.The most important cause of the enrichment of gold and other trace elements in the sedimentary basins has been examined in this study to determine which basins are the most prospective for the development of orogenic gold deposits. An important influence for Au and other associated trace element accumulation in sedimentary pyrite is the temporal variation of trace element content in the oceans, as revealed by a database of over 1400 analyses of pyrite from black shale through geologic time. It is inferred that sediments coeval with those where sedimentary pyrite is enriched in Au and associated trace elements are more likely to be source rocks of orogenic and Carlin-style gold deposits.Factor analysis of the trace element content of pyrite through geologic time was conducted to investigate the multivariate relationships amongst trace elements and how these chemical factors explain the uptake of trace elements. One important factor includes Te, Au, Pb and Bi content. The incorporation of these large cations into pyrite is enhanced by As3+ substituting for Fe in pyrite lattice. The As3+ ion occurs in relatively oxidised environments and, thus, it is expected that shales deposited in non-euxinic waters are better source rocks for orogenic gold deposits.The examination of both the time in which the sediments were deposited and the redox conditions of the basin, and the ocean more broadly, can be used as a guide to approximate the extent of a basin’s fertility. Private equity (PE) firms are comparatively free of mandatory requirements for the level and scope of due diligence applied prior to making investment decisions in minerals projects when compared to listed entities, sovereign funds or financial institutions adopting the Equator Principles (Equator Principles Association, 2013). While this freedom allows for flexibility, agility and innovation in making investment decisions, it can also expose PE firms to material risks that may impact their ability to successfully list the projects or attract later financing.Financial institutions and investors with mandatory due diligence and disclosure standards may refrain from investment in or acquisition of a project if it fails to meet various performance requirements. There are many high-profile projects that have suffered significant write-downs on book value after acquisition because specific non-mining issues were not adequately assessed. Thus, a PE firm may be left with an asset that is difficult to divest and incapable of securing development finance.PE firms can manage this risk by being aware of the growth trend in the adoption of ‘international standards’ in addition to host nation standards and legislative requirements. This paper outlines key issues for PE firms to address to maximise the chances of obtaining funding or successfully taking an exploration or mining project through to listing or divestment. The first stage involves preconcentration of gold in a suitable source rock, such as carbonaceous black shales, felsic volcaniclastics or komatiitic volcanics. The second stage involves the release of gold (commonly with arsenic and/or tellurium) from the source rocks during metamorphism or magmatic intrusive events, accompanied by the replacement of source rock pyrite by pyrrhotite. Recent research suggests that synsedimentary gold trapped in the structure of diagenetic arsenian pyrite in reduced carbonaceous facies of continental margin sedimentary basins is an ideal source of gold for many orogenic and Carlin-style gold deposits. The conversion of diagenetic arsenian pyrite to pyrrhotite during basin closure and greenschist facies metamorphism is the key process releasing gold and arsenic to the metamorphic fluid, with metal deposition in structural trap sites to form the deposits.CITATION:Large, R R, 2015. The Truong Son fold-thrust belt (TSFTB) is a prominent tectonic component of mainland Indochina that occurs as a north-west–south-east-trending tectonic entity that extends from north-eastern Laos, straddles the Laos-Vietnam border area and is submerged under the sea basin in east central Vietnam. The TSFTB hosts numerous regional-scale gold and polymetallic base metal deposits, and the mineralisation occurs along the strike of the belt; however, the potential of many of these deposits are inadequately evaluated. The ore mineralisation is hosted by different rock assemblages, including highly metamorphosed Late Proterozoic metasedimentary rocks and Palaeozoic sedimentary and/or volcanic packages, which were intruded by several phases of magma and underwent a number of tectonic events. Several ore-forming styles – including porphyry, Carlin-type and sediment-hosted orogenic Au – were formed during at least two phases of regional thermotectonism that have been identified in the TSFTB. However, all of the major gold deposits/mineralisations are closely related to region-wide structural breaks and many of them are controlled by large-scale, high-strain zones. Privately-owned companies considering investing in the resources sector can optimise their investment decisions by adopting a systematic technical assessment of acquisition assets, similar to the approach commonly adopted by public financial institutions and publicly-listed companies.Technical due diligence provides a process to identify key geological, mining, geotechnical, metallurgical, environmental and social risks and opportunities and determine the most likely business case and valuation of assets. Technical due diligence is commonly carried out in parallel with legal, commercial and financial due diligence, often involving the acquirer, to maximise the understanding of the investment.There are significant advantages in investors conducting a comprehensive technical due diligence, which typically involves site visits and project assessment to international standards by an independent, multidisciplinary team of experts. The outcomes provide the opportunity for the investor to make early, informed decisions and to understand and manage risks.Technical due diligence may be carried out at several stages: when considering and weighing up a number of investment options, prior to and during a transaction or immediately post-transaction. In the first stage, the outcomes will inform the choice of investment and, more particularly, whether there are any fundamental flaws in the projects being considered. In the second stage, due diligence outcomes can inform the level of investment and approach to risk management and planning. The Misima gold mine, located on Misima Island within the Milne Bay Province of Papua New Guinea, was operated by Misima Mines Pty Ltd, a subsidiary of Placer Dome Asia Pacific Limited (Placer), between 1988 and 2004. During this period, the mine produced 3.7 Moz of gold and 22.2 Moz of silver. In June 2012, the Special Mining Lease for the property was surrendered and incorporated into an Exploration Licence (EL). WCB Resources Ltd (WCB) entered into an exploration farm-in agreement with Pan Pacific Copper covering this EL.In June 2013, WCB published a new mineral resource of the Umuna deposit at Misima. All the drill hole data used for estimation was historical data collected by the previous owners of the Misima mine between 1977 and 2001. No new drilling was carried out by WCB. Confidence that the data could be relied on was provided by detailed interrogation of the existing data, reconciliation of the new resource model against production data and significant input from individuals who had previously been involved with the data collection, resource estimation and production activities of the Misima mine during its operation.This extended abstract will consider the challenges associated with locating, retrieving and validating historical data to use as inputs to produce an updated Mineral Resource estimate and comment on the material value of appropriate data storage, documentation and record keeping through the life of a project. It will also comment on the value of WCB obtaining access to the intellectual knowledge of many professionals that were former employees of Placer. Magmatic arcs are prime targets for porphyry- and epithermal-style mineral deposits, although settings within continental arcs and/or tectonically-thickened crust generally tend to be more prospective than intra-oceanic arcs in extensional settings. In this paper, we report new geochemical and geochronological data on igneous rocks of the Western Belt of the Vanuatu intra-oceanic arc. Dating of igneous hornblende (Ar-Ar) and zircon (U-Pb) from the igneous rocks place their formation in the late Eocene to Miocene. In most respects, these are typical arc igneous rocks. However, they contain inherited zircon grains with significant age populations at ca 2.8–2.5 Ga, 2.0–1.8 Ga, 1.75–1.5 Ga, 850–700 Ma, 530–430 Ma and 330–220 Ma. This inheritance signature is unlike anything recognised from the oceanic realm of the south-west Pacific, but, in general, does match the age of the major crustal blocks of the Australian continent. An exception is the significant proportion (~20 per cent) of zircons of Rodinia breakup age (~800 Ma), which previously has not been found in eastern Australia or the south-west Pacific.We propose that part of the Vanuatu arc basement comprises a ribbon of continental material rifted from northern Australia prior to, or during, the Cretaceous. The presence of ancient continental material within the Vanuatu island arc may help reconcile the relatively large thickness and low density of the crust of Vanuatu, and may enhance the prospects for significant porphyry and epithermal ore deposits in the region.CITATION:Spandler, C, Buys, J, Holm, R J and Richards, S W, 2015. The Shagou deposit is located along NE-trending faults within the high-grade metamorphic basement of the Xiong’er Terrane in the Qinling orogenic belt. It is a large Ag-Pb-Zn deposit hosted in the Taihua Supergroup and has proven reserves of 1.54 Mt of ore with grades of 767 g/t Ag, 13.24 per cent Pb and 4.31 per cent Zn. The hydrothermal ore-forming process can be divided into early quartz-pyrite, middle quartz-polymetallic sulfides and late quartz-carbonate stages. Four types of fluid inclusions (ie pure carbonic, carbonic, pure aqueous and aqueous) can be distinguished in quartz. Fluid inclusion, hydrogen, oxygen and sulfur isotope systematics indicate that the ore-forming fluids are initially deeply sourced metamorphic water with meteoric water gradually mixed in the later stages. Sulfur isotope data show that the ore-forming fluids originated from both the Taihua Supergroup and the sedimentary successions of the Guandaokou and Luanchuan Groups (CSC) located to the south of the Machaoying Fault. A genetic model of the Shagou deposit is proposed as follows: CSC subducted northward along the Machaoying Fault beneath the Xiong’er Terrane during the Mesozoic collision between the North China Craton and South China Block. Subsequent dehydration resulted in the devolatilisation of fluids rich in CO2.
