In initial attempts to mine taconite by conventional open-pit methods, the material tended to break into tabular blocks that were too large to be handled by conventional shovel dippers and were unsatisfactory in an ordinary crusher feed. A great amount of secondary blasting was necessary, which added considerably to the cost of mining. The Bureau of Mines and others are engaged in studies designed to contribute to the solution of taconite-mining problems. These studies concern problems related to drilling techniques and patterns, types and methods of use of explosives, and other factors relative to effecting maximum fragmentation at minimum cost. This report, is concerned with study of the application of shaped charges in drill holes, the effectiveness of shaped charges as compared to capped charges in secondary blasting, and the merits of different drilling patterns and methods of detonation of conventional-explosive charges. Fragmentation of taconite at or near the surface is controlled or strongly influenced by joint and bedding planes. Since all tests in this study were made in a jointed and bedded area, a definite conclusion as to the relative effect of a shaped charge in a drill hole, as compared to a conventional charge at greater depths and tighter ground, is precluded. However, application of shaped charges in primary blasting of taconite appears to be of no advantage. In secondary blasting of taconite, conventional, capped charges produced better breakage than shaped charges of the designs tested. Based on the results of conventional blasting practice in horizontal-, inclined-, and vertical-hole tests, no better fragmentation is obtained from blasting either horizontal or inclined holes, compared to vertical holes. Holes drilled in staggered parallel rows that intersect both series of joint planes at the greatest possible angle, give maximum breakage compared to rows paral-lel to one of the series of joint planes. Methods of detonation made little difference in breakage; but the milli-delay caps produced the best conditions for moving the broken rocks.

THE Duluth gabbro outcrops containing sulphides of copper, nickel, and iron are located on both sides of State Highway No. 1 an airline distance of 8.5 miles southeast of Ely in northeastern Minnesota. The region of known sulphide occurrences includes parts of sections 5, T. 61 N., R. 11 W., and parts of sections 25, 26, 32, 33, and 34, T. 62 N., R. 11 W. These sections, given in Fig. 1, are all in Lake County, Minnesota. Part of the area, which lies entirely within the Superior National Forest, is shown on the topographic map of the Ely quadrangle. The original discovery was made in 1948 when a small pit was opened in weathered gabbro rubble for use on a forest access road. A shear zone had caused unusual decomposition in this glaciated area, and the resulting copper stain was noted by Fred S. Childers, Sr., an Ely prospector, who began searching the outcrops along the base of the intrusive. He was joined in further exploration by Roger V. Whiteside of Duluth. In the summer of 1951 a small diamond drill was moved into the area and a hole 188 ft deep was drilled, passing through 11 ft of glacial drift into sulphide-bearing gabbro. This paper is a preliminary report on the geology of the newly discovered ore. The Duluth gabbro is one of the largest known basic intrusives and may be defined as a lopolith.' It extends northeastward from the city of Duluth as a great crescent-shaped mass that intersects the shore of Lake Superior again near Hovland, 130 miles to the northeast, see Fig. 2. The distance around the outside of the crescent is nearly 170 miles. The form of the intrusive is simple at Duluth where it ends abruptly north of the St. Louis River; at the east end, however, the gabbro splits into two elongated, sill-like masses separated mainly by lava flows and characterized by minor irregularities. The outcrop reaches a maximum width in the central part where it is about 30 miles across, and a maximum thickness of about 50,000 ft. It may be significant that the sulphides occur at the base of the thickest part. The lopolith has segregated into rock types ranging from peridotite to granite. The most abundant types are olivine gabbro, gabbro, troctolite, anortho-site, and granite. Of lesser importance quantitatively are peridotite, norite, pyroxenite, magnetite gabbro, and titaniferous magnetite. Grout estimates that two-thirds of the gabbro at Duluth is olivine gabbro. Variations in the percentages of plagio-clase, augite, olivine, and magnetite-ilmenite constitute the only essential differences found among the basic rock types. The predominant mineral is plagioclase, mainly labradorite. Plagioclase and olivine seem to have crystallized early, and the olivine rich rocks, usually troctolite, are found in the lower part. Segregations of titaniferous magnetite are abundant near the base of the gabbro along the eastern part and also occur far above the base. These have recently been described in detail by Grout.' Near the top, segregation has produced a gradation to granite, or "red rock," as it is known locally. This consists of quartz, red feldspar, and hornblende. The red rock forms a zone with a maximum width of nearly 5 miles but is quantitatively unimportant from Duluth northward for 35 miles. In Cook county, where the gabbro splits, each of the two sill-like masses has a red rock top somewhat thicker in proportion to the gabbro below than in the main central mass. The intrusive ranges from coarse to medium in grain size and from granitoid to diabasic in texture. Throughout much of the Duluth gabbro in Minnesota banding and foliation are well developed, as Grout has emphasized.V he bands are mainly a result of variation in the percentage of minerals, as in troctolite with alternating bands high in olivine and in plagioclase. A few bands may consist largely of one mineral, as is true of some segregations of magnetite. Many of the banded rocks show a clearly developed parallelism of platy plagioclase crystals, and both banding and foliation are believed to conform to the floor of the lopolith. Throughout its extent in Minnesota the Duluth gabbro dips east and south toward Lake Superior. It is generally believed to extend beneath Lake Superior and is found as a smaller mass exposed along the north side of the Gogebic district in Wisconsin and Michigan. The dip at and near the base ranges along most of its length from 20 to 40°, but at places the internal banding dips even more steeply. The dip of the upper part is much less, and if it is assumed that the flows along the north shore of Lake Superior are a dependable indication, it does not exceed 15". Late in the nineteenth century en active coal-mining industry was begun in the Lower Freeport bed near Reynoldsville, Pa., where the bed thickened to more than 10 feet in places . The coal was readily accepted as an excellent steam fuel. Much of the thick coal his been depleted, but there are many areas where the deposit averages about 14 feet in thickness. As the more desirable mining sites were worked out in the Lower Freeport bed, other beds were exposed from which will come the county's major cowl production in future. The Lower Freeport bed is still the most important bed in Jefferson County from a production standpoint. The Lower Kittanning bed is second. Sporadic mining is being done in the Upper Freeport, Upper Kittanning, Middle Kittanning, Clarion, and Brookville beds. Strip mining has permitted recovery of much coal that could not be mined profitably by conventional underground methods.

THE Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the com-position as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the fusing temperature of ash, Hardgrove grindability index, and the free-swelling index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions 4 issued by the Bureau; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau's laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor and, if it is not, a price adjustment is made. Analyses of delivered coal and "tipple" samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) are valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. Moreover, the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal.

The increased costs of exploration and drilling of new oil fields and the continued success of water flooding in nearly depleted oil fields have created a demand for information on the results obtained from individual projects. The Bureau of Mines has published several reports concerning water-flood activity in the Mid continent area and at the request of the industry has continued to collect and disseminate this information. This report was written in response to these requests. It describes in detail the water-flooding projects in Anderson, Franklin, Linn, and Miami Counties, Kans., and includes methods of water treating and the results obtained. The production histories of each county and many water-flood projects are shown graphically from the date of the first development. Maps of most of the major projects, showing their status as of January 1, 1953 are presented also. The practice of injecting water to stimulate oil production was legalized in Kansas in 1935, and the first water-flooding project authorized in this four-county area was initiated by the Texas Co. in December 1935 in Linn County, Forty-nine projects2/ initiated in the area to January 1953 are estimated to have recovered approximately 10 million barrels of oil that could not have been produced by methods used previously. About 7,900 productive acres had been, or are, flooded by these projects, and approximately 1.36 million barrels of water had been injected.

While the techniques of coal mining through the application of machines and the enhancement of information and skills have advanced to an extraordinary extent, particularly during the past 20 years, the underlying means is essentially the same as when man first began to mine coal. Despite this progress in the manner of coal mining, it continues today as a hazardous, toilsome, grimy task. Coal mining per se has advanced at a greater and more rapid stride in the past 25 years than the mining of any: other mineral, but the basic method is fundamentally the same as it was the first day a miner took a pick into his hands many centuries ago. THERE has been a running discussion over the past several years with respect to the life and adequacy of our natural gas reserves. Some of the experts agree on one phase of the subject at least-that eventually it will be necessary to augment deliveries of natural gas in the northern markets by the development of a more or less comparable synthetic gas made from coal. The purpose of this paper is to point out: 1. It may be later than a good many people think-the demand for addi¬tional domestic and commercial pipeline gas in at least one section of the North will probably be felt rather keenly before an adequate synthetic pipe¬line-gas project, developed on economic lines, could be completed, even if initiated in the near future. 2. The evidence is considerable that such a project would be technically sound and economically self-supporting, although the margin of profit at first might be so small and the magnitude of an economic enterprise so great -that financing would be impossible without Government aid in some form or other. The part of the country referred to is the heavily populated section in the northeast of the United States. To simplify an examination of the situa¬tion, let us take the potential marketing areas within range to the north and east of the three pipelines: 1. Tennessee Gas Transmission Co. as it enters Erie County, New York state. 2. Texas Eastern Transmission Corporation just before the tap that sup¬plies the general Philadelphia area. 3. Transcontinental Gas Pipe Line Corporation as it enters the state of New Jersey. The sources of gas for these three pipelines are in Texas and Louisiana. The ultimate maximum combined capacity of the three lines at the points stated is approximately 1,200,000,000 cu ft per 24 hr at the maximum load factor probable of attainment in normal operation. The areas supplied by the three lines north and east of the points stated, or assumed as eventual markets, are: 1. Central New York state, from Buffalo to Albany (both inclusive).

"SUMMARYThe coarse-grained granitic pegmatities of the United States have long been a source of many important industrial minerals, because of this, they have been studied intensively by geologists, mining engineers, and metallurgists. These studies have amassed a rather astounding array of published and unpublished information.Correlation of geological studies between individual pegmatites, as well as between major districts, has brought forth some semblance of order to the knowledge of the structure and Mineralogical composition of those highly complex and irregular deposits, making it possible to classify certain prgmatitites and pegmatitec zones into several groups of associated minerals; based upon the presence or absence of the minor minerals of beryllium and lithium. This classification or grouping of minerals, with the methods that have been developed for recovering certain of these minerals, makes possible a systematic approach to the winning of many of the industrially important minerals from pegmatite rock by a single integrated process.As the coarse-grained granitic pegmatites are composed primarily of,feldspar, quartz, and muscovite, the methods developed for separating and recovering them, as well as those methods developed for separating and recovering such minor minerals as spodumene and lepidolite, are important contributions to the over-all problem of pegmatite treatment. Some of these methods have been demonstrated in the laboratory only, whereas others have progressed beyond the laboratory stage arid are being employed in commercial operations.Recent laboratory investigations at Rapid City, employing both these early developments and the mineral groupings, have demonstrated that a single integrated process can recover muscovite, feldspar; and. quartz from the rejects of hand-sorting a typical muscovite-feldspar-quartz material. Employing a newly developed procedure for the flotation of beryl, the investigations have also demonstrated the possibility of recovering the beryl, in addition to muscovite, feldspar, and quartz, by an integrated process from a typical berylliferous pegmatitic material in which all of these minerals are present."

"INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARYThe Andover-Sulphur Hill iron mines in Sussex County, N. J., have a production record extending over 100 years. The last production recorded was about 1880. These mines produced high-grade ore of two types: Red ore (hematite) and blue on (magnetite). Some sulfides (lead, zinc, and copper) were found underlying the iron deposits. Data as to size and grade of these sulfide bodies are very sketch"",Howard J. Hewitt of Elizabeth, N. J., lessee of the Sulphur Hill mines from 1940-45, prospected for lead, zinc, and copper. .His only production was several hundred tons of low-grade iron ore, which was crushed and used as heavy aggregate to make concrete blocks for ship ballast.In October and November 1942 made a magnetic survey of this area and bored six-diamond-drill holes with the dual objective of prospecting for sulfides and testing for extensions of the iron-are deposits indicated by the magnetic survey. 2/ In 1944, an iron-mining company examined this property and diamond-drilled seven holes. Between December 1949 and March 1950, the Bureau of Mines in search of sulfide deposits, bored three additional diamond-drill holes. Two of these were on the Sulphur Hill tract and one on the adjoining Tar Hill tract."

"INTRODUCTION In the usual volumetric determination of uranium, the solution containing uranium is reduced in a Jones reductor, yielding a mixture of trivalent and tetravalent uranium; the trivalent uranium is oxidized to the tetravalent state by bubbling a stream of air through the solution. The resulting solution of tetravalent uranium is titrated with a standard oxidant, generally sulfatoceric acid, dichromate, or permanganate. It seemed likely that the same general procedure could be used in determining semimicro quantities pf uranium if the conditions affecting the variables involved were understood more clearly than at present. In the method described below, the use of ferric sulfate to oxidize tetravalent uranium allows the titration to be made at room temperature in an essentially colorless solution with sulfatoceric acid. The latter oxidant in turn permits the use of the very stable indicator, ferroin; with its sharp color change and exactly reproducible blanks.Solutions of uranyl sulfate were prepared by diluting a stock solution that had been standardized gravimetrically according to the method of Lundell and Knowles (8).3/ Solutions of sulfatoceric acid were prepared according to the directions of G. F. Smith (12) and were standardized against arsenic trioxide in the presence of osmic acid according to the directions of Glen (5). The cerium solutions were stored in 18-liter carboys fitted with siphon arrangements so that the bottles did not need to be opened and protected from light in a dark cupboard. Under these conditions, even the 0.01 N solution changed by less than 1 part per thousand over a period of about 6 months."

"SUMMARYThe K.M.A. reservoir was discovered to be oil bearing at a depth of 3,719 feet on March 11, 1931. Extensive development, however, was not begun immediately, because the discovery well had a low initial daily oil production, and market conditions for oil were unfavorable. Development of the field progressed slowly for the next 6 1/2 years. In the latter part of 1937, a wildcat well approximately 2 miles southwest of the discovery well was drilled on a magnetometer high and completed with an initial flowing production of 2,016 barrels of 43° A.P.I.-gravity oil in 12 hours. Rapid development of the southwestern part of the K.M.A. field was begun immediately and continued until over 700 wells were drilled and approximately 12,500 acres proved oil productive.Because of the large size of the entire K.M.A. field, this report is limited in scope to the southwestern part only, and the discussion that follows pertains to this area only. The closing date for production statistics is August 1, 1949.The K.M.A. structure is a complex anticline having a maximum closure of 250 feet, and the K.M.A. formation is composed of sediments that grade from limestone through sandy lime and limy sand to sandstone with thin streaks of shale. Two distinct members of the K.M.A. formation, zone I and zone II, are oil productive. Core analyses indicate the average porosity to be 16.5 percent for zone I and 16.1 percent for zone II. A relationship was established from core data, which showed the correlative permeabilities to be 42.1 millidarcys for zone I and 39.5 millidarcys for zone II, whereas the arithmetical averages of the permeabilities were 84 millidarcys for zone I and 216 millidarcys for zone II. Connate water saturations were 17.5 percent for zone I and 20.0 percent for zone II. The porosity-saturation method, using a thickness-correction factor, was employed to calculate the volume c 168.1 million barrels of stock-tank oil initially in place in the reservoir. Analyses of the reservoir oilIn that, although the initial reservoir pressure was 1,750 p.s.i., the original reservoir oil was saturated to only 1,300 at which pressure 1 barrel of stock,tank oil contained 525 cubic feet of gas in solution.A serious decline in reservoir pressure during the 2 years of rapid development alarmed the operators and caused them to consider a cooperative pressure-maintenance program. In the latter part of 1939, the K.M.A. Pressure Maintenance Association was organized, and the gasoline plants in the field agreed to process the wet gas and return the dry gas to leases having gas-injection wells. Approximately 27 percent of the cumulative volume of produced gas had been returned to the reservoir by August 1, 1949."

This investigation was conducted jointly by the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey to obtain further information on the source and economic possibilities of the copper mineralization exposed on the Copper Giant group of claims, Ajo mining district, Pima County, Ariz. The Copper Giant group of claims was first brought to the attention of the Bureau of Mines by Joseph Hunter (deceased), Phoenix, Ariz., part owner of the claims. In December 1942 these claims, and an adjoining group, were investigated by T. C. Denton, mining engineer, formerly with the Bureau of Mines, and Nels P. Peterson, geologist, Federal Geological Survey. It was concluded the area could not be considered as a source of copper for immed- iate emergency needs and that further investigation of the area, at the time, was not warranted. In the spring of 1948 the lessee, J. H. Greenway Albert, requested Bureau of Mines assistance in developing the property. J. H. Hedges, former chief, Tucson Branch, Mining Division, and Lincoln A. Stewart, mining engineer, Bureau of Mines, made a cursory examination of the property and noted that at numerous places, low-grade copper mineralization appeared on fractures and bedding of the Locomotive fanglomerate and Ajo volcanics, which are thought to be of Tertiary age. During the period of May 11 through 14, 1949, Bureau of Mines engineers3 mapped and sampled two areas of mineral- ization. On June 2 and 3, 1949, the areas selected by the Bureau and three other nearby mineralized areas were investigated by C. A. Anderson and R. S. Cannon, Jr., of the Federal Geological Survey. As a result of these examina- tions, further investigation of certain areas was believed to be merited. The Copper Giant area was selected as the most favorable in which to carry out exploratory and development work. The field work on the project was started in October 1949 and completed in December 1949. It consisted of road building, trenching, sampling, topo- graphic and geologic mapping, diamond drilling, and logging of core. Samples taken on the project and during preliminary examinations totaled 64, of which 63 were surface samples. Diamond drilling, started October 10 and completed December 7, consisted of two holes for a total depth of 1,542 feet.

Laboratory investigations have produced flotation concentrates contain- ing 91 to more than 92 percent titania, with fair recoveries, from the Christy property, Hot Spring County, Ark. The titanium-bearing ore on the Christy property occurs in a quartz-clay- iron oxide mineralization, which contains, on the average, about 6.0 percent TiO2, chiefly as the mineral brockite; brookite and rutile are different crys- talline forms of titanium dioxide. Recent work by the Bureau of Mines has shown that titanium chloride can be produced readily from the rutile-type mineral by reduction with coke fol- lowed by low-temperature chlorination. Metallic titanium is in turn derived etallic from the chloride by the Kroll process .

The history of this refinery has been one of expansion. It now has the capacity to produce 240,000 tons of cathodes annually. A general flowsheet and descriptions of the plant layout, operations involved, and equipment used at one of the world's largest and most modern electrolytic copper refineries are presented. THE El Paso copper refinery of Phelps Dodge Refining Corp. was originally constructed by the Nichols Copper Co., in association with Phelps Dodge Corp. and the Calumet & Arizona Mining Co., in order to refine anode copper produced at the smelters of the two latter companies. Initial production was obtained from the plant in January 1930 and its annual refining capacity was 100,000 tons of anodes. In order to keep pace with Phelps Dodge Corp.'s increasing copper production in the Southwest, it became necessary in 1937 to increase the El Paso plant's refining capacity to 160,000 tons of cathodes annually. This was accomplished by adding two sections to the electrolytic tank house, increasing the number of anodes placed in each commercial electrolytic tank from 33 to 37, and making changes in the dc circuits which made it possible to put three generators on each of the two circuits instead of two, thus increasing the amperage on each circuit from 10,000 to 14,800 amp. The capacity of the two furnaces from which refined shapes were cast was increased by raising the sidedoor bays on the furnaces 6 in. An increase of 70 pct in the productive capacity of Phelps Dodge Corp.s Morenci Branch in 1942 again made it necessary to expand refining capacity. In order to accomplish this, Defense Plant Corp. set up a project to increase the capacity of the El Paso plant to 240,000 tons of cathodes annually. This project consisted of enlarging the tank house approximately 50 pct, the construction of another wire- bar furnace, and corresponding increases in other departments where necessary. The engineering work on this expansion was begun in March 1942. Actual construction was under way by August 1942, and the work was completed by March 1944. These additional facilities were purchased from Defense Plant Corp. by Phelps Dodge Refining Corp. in August 1949. The plant is in El Paso about eight miies east of the center of the city and near Highway 80 and the main lines of the Southern Pacific and Texas & New Orleans railroads. The plant site covers approximately 494 acres of company-owned land that is ideally adapted for its use, being well-drained sandy soil and having enough slope so that a minimum amount of excavation was required when the plant was constructed. There is still ample room on the plant site for any future plant expansion. The plant is constructed on four different ground levels and so arranged that the unrefined copper is unloaded on the highest level at the north side of the plant and the refined copper is shipped out from the lowest level on the south side of the plant. The receiving or unloading platform, weighing and sampling rooms, main floor of the tank house, acid and condensate storage tanks, and the slimes and copper sulphate plants are on the first or highest level. The tank house basement, yard scales, charging and furnace bays, balloon flue and stack, brick-storage building, substation and power house, boiler feedwater treating plant and pump house, water storage tanks, and change houses are on the second level. Numerous widely distributed pegmatites of the southern Black Hills of South Dakota contain small amounts of beryl, and two minor deposits are known in the northern Black Hills. Few mines have produced more than 50 tons, and the current, rate of production for the area is about 100 tons annually. Total production, since the first records, is 2,358 tons. Most of the deposits contain less than 1 percent beryl, although the beryl zones in several deposits contain 2 percent beryl or more. Estimated reserves of beryl total 11,824 tons, and an additional 234 tons has been measured; there are other unestimated reserves. The pegmatites are in a belt about the margin of the Harney Peak batholith in the southern Black Hills, although they fail into three districts. The most important, from the point of view of production and reserves, is the Keystone district. Many deposits also are found in the vicinity of Custer and Pringle. Small amounts of beryl occur in the dikes near Hill City. A little beryl has been produced from the Tinton district in the northern Black Hills, and an undeveloped dike has been discovered on Whitewood Peak near Deadwood. The beryl-bearing pegmatites are principally coarse-grained intergrowths or massive segregations of feldspar, quartz, and mica. Some of them contain notable amounts of lithium minerals, as well as some tantalite, columbite, and cassiterite.

The peacetime activities of the Bureau's petroleum and natural-gas program have been reoriented to serve the needs of a national-defense program. When the United Nations sent troops to Korea after the North Korean Army crossed the 38th parallel in the latter part of June 1950, the Bureau's coordinated national program on petroleum and natural gas, with each major project forming an essential member of its framework, was carefully reviewed by those in charge of the work. As a matter of fact, the era of normalcy in which the petroleum and natural-gas research of the Bureau of Mines prospered during the fiscal year 19502/ was no sedative to the need for alertness on a national-defense front. The program, although conducted along peacetime lines in general, was scanned critically and repeatedly during that period to see where - if the need should arise -the emphasis could be shifted from peace to defense or war. Judging from the experience of two wars, it would not be long before the Bureau would be asked to use its trained technical personnel in applying techniques already learned in peacetime research to the requirements of munition and fuel needs of national defense. Near the end of January 1951, petroleum and natural-gas engineers of the Bureau of Mines began a comprehensive study of reservoir conditions in the Canyon Reef fields of Scurry, Borden, and Kent Counties, Tex. This work was preceded by published analyses of crude oils from Scurry County as early as April 1950. Well-informed persons in industry have estimated that these fields hold reserves that will yield 3 to 6 billion barrels of stock-tank oil. Although generally accepted good operating practices have been followed, engineering tests have shown that the natural energy, except in some favorable parts of the reservoir, will not be adequate for obtaining a high percentage of recovery. Correct information regarding the extent and availability of this vast reservoir of hydrocarbons is therefore of great concern to the Petroleum Administration for Defense in carrying out its responsibilities under the Defense Production Act.

MORE than 5000 miners and suppliers descended upon Denver to make the American Mining Congress' four-day metal mining show one of the most extravagant equipment displays ever assembled in one place at one time. The most recent developments in equipment for mining, milling, and processing ore were shown by the 146 exhibitors at Denver's new City Auditorium which covers 57,000 sq ft of floor space. Other displays were placed in the open air opposite the auditorium site. Registration desks were opened Sunday, Sept. 21. A field trip to the Colorado School of Mines at Golden was the featured activity of the day. Official opening of the show took place on Monday, and presided over by Howard I. Young, president of American Zinc, Lead & Smelting Co.; Otto Herres, vice president, Combined Metals Reduction Co.; William J. Coulter, vice president, Climax Molybdenum Co.; Charles B. Stainback, Westinghouse Electric Corp.; and Merrill E. Shoup, president, Golden Cycle Corp. Convention welcoming addresses were delivered by a representative of Mayor James Q. Newton, of Denver, and Gov. Daniel V. Thorton of Colorado. Following the formal opening ceremonies a round table discussion dealt with the "Paley Commission Report" formally called Resources for Freedom. Participating in the panel were: Arthur H. Bunker and George R. Brown, members of the Paley commission; H. I. Young, president of the American Mining Congress; Horace M. Albright, president of U. S. Potash Co.; Evan Just, vice president, Cyprus Mines Corp.; Donald H. McLaughlin, president, Homestake Mining Co.; E. H. Snyder, president Combined Metals Reduction Co.; Simon D. Strauss, vice president, American Smelting & Refining Co.; Sen. H. C. Dworshak (R.-Idaho) ; Ira B. Joralemon, consulting engineer; Jess Larson, De fense Materials Procurement Agency; and Andrew Fletcher, president of St. Joseph Lead Co. The panel discussed the report for six hours, adding a great deal of information to the already voluminous amount which has been gathered concerning it. Three objections to the report frequently mentioned were: 1-the multilateral contract; 2-international buffer stocks; 3-international buffer stocks combined with limited quota arrangements. Points on which the panel commended the report were its recommendations for acceleration of topographic and geologic mapping of the United States and Alaska; recognition of the principle of percentage depletion for metals and minerals; and advocation of removal of the present limitations on the expensing of exploration costs applicable to minerals. Technical sessions were held throughout the four days of the meeting. Included in the program were: Progress in Mechanication; Small Mines; Public Lands; Open Pit Mining; Manpower-Labor Relations; Shaft Sinking; Roof Support; Taxation, Gold, Silver and Monetary Policy; Advances in Mill Practices; Special Conference on Strategic Materials; Uranium Mining-Atomic Energy; Prospecting and Exploration; New Metallurgical Processes; and Rock Breaking. About 45 papers and several panels were presented during technical sessions. Formal and informal social functions consumed the remaining time of the convention. Three locations were needed to handle the huge throng attending the Mining Jamboree Monday evening. The only other sponsored social function took place Thursday evening. A great many informal gatherings, chiefly convivial, were held in manufacturers' courtesy rooms-called wet stopes. A. D. Le Claire and R. S. Barnes (Atomic Energy Research Establishment, Harwell, Didcot, Berks., England)-—This much awaited paper admirably confirms that the Kirkendall effect is a true diffusion phenomenon and likely to be found in all diffusing systems. The most likely explanation put forward so far to account for the shift of interface is that the two components of the system, diffusing in opposite directions, do so with unequal rates so that there is a net loss of material from that half of the diffusion zone rich in the more rapidly diffusing component. This loss is accompanied, and at least partly compensated for, by a closing up or decrease in volume of this latter half of the diffusion zone and an expansion of the other half so as to tend to keep constant the overall volume per atom. This is manifest as a movement of the original interface. If this is a true picture of what is taking place then there are at least two important matters requiring further study."1—The quantitative relating of the observed shift with the independently measured separate diffusion coefficients of the two diffusing species."2—A detailed study of the mechanism and characteristics of the closing up process."We would like first to make a few remarks pertinent to these topics. In connection with the first of these, it is a pity that more and detailed measurements were not made on the Au-Ag system, the only one for which the separate diffusion coefficients of the two species have been measured.'" One of us (A. D. Le C.) has calculated from Johnson's results the shift to have been expected in samples D.2 and D.3.
