Gnome shaft, situated about 24 miles southeast of Carlsbad, N. Mex., was designed and sunk by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission for conducting a peace- time experimental nuclear explosion in the thick salt beds of the Permian Salado formation. Excavation was started July 1, 1960, and completed July 26, 1961. The 10-foot diameter shaft, lined with concrete through the rock section, was sunk 1,216 feet. A drift was driven approximately 1,140 feet on the 1,200- foot level terminating in a shot chamber. On completion of 100 feet of shaft, by means of a truck-mounted crane, facilities were installed for conventional sinking. About 709 feet of rock and 506 feet of salt were encountered in the shaft. Salt beds at this place are reported to be over 1,200 feet thick. The overlying rock section varies greatly in composition and thickness of beds and contains a 28-foot bed of water-bearing dolomite. The aquifer was sealed to facilitate shaft sinking and to prevent water-seepage damage in the salt section of the shaft. Sealing was accomplished by grout injection through holes drilled into the aquifer and by grouting behind the concrete liner.

The ore deposit is described, with emphasis on those physical characteristics that affect the choice of mining and milling methods. This paper describing the mining methods of the Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co. is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods and costs in various mining districts of the United States. The story of mining at Inspiration is of particular interest because, after 127,812,000 tons of low-grade copper ore were successfully mined, the mining method was changed from block caving to open-pit. As the open pit became deeper, many features of the former block-caving operation that were exposed elucidated concepts of the mechanics of caving that previously had been assumed but not observed. The conversion to open-pit mining was accomplished by unique combinations of equipment and the introduction of ingenious engineering and operating practices that have extended the expected life of the mine for many years.

This report, based on information made available by four uranium-producing companies, describes the geology, exploration, open-pit development and mining, and shaft sinking in the Gas Hills uranium district of Wyoming. Open-pit stripping features motor-scrapers push-loaded by crawler or rubber-tired tractors. The ground generally can be ripped, and little blasting is necessary. Detailed data are given on grouting for ground stabilization in sinking a small-diameter shaft in the relatively unconsolidated sandstone and siltstone, Cost and performance data are presented as made available by the companies.

In order to demonstrate the role of defect chemistry in the solid state to a process-metallurgy reaction, laboratory experiments were carried aut to remove copper from liquid lead using lead sulfide which had been doped to provide definite concentrations of cation vacancies. The removal of copper decreases in the order: bismuth- or antimony-doped PbS, undoped PbS or tin-doped PbS, and silver-doped PbS. The data are explained using the simple mass -action law and in terms of the exceedingly rapid interstitial diffusion of coppw in PbS to vacant cation sites. Results are in agree-ment with thermodynamic predictions and certain industrial practices that copper may be removed from lead below the limit of its coexistence with pure Cu,S and pure PbS. The role of defects in solids has been exploited in semiconductors and many device applications, in explaining tarnish formation, dissolution rates, and mechanical properties. The application of these principles to many process-metallurgical problems has not received as much attention. It was the purpose of this study to illustrate the role of defect structures of solids in a process-metallurgical application. When lead is refined, the ore, galena (PbS), is reduced by a series of operations to liquid lead (lead bullion) containing impurities such as copper, bismuth, antimony, arsenic, and silver depending on the original composition, the fluxes added, and the particular type of operation, see Fig. 1. In order to produce a pure lead, a series of refining operations are carried out. A typical lead-bullion analysis before drossing is shown in Table I. Copper is removed first as its presence increases the zinc consumption during the desilverizing process. For preliminary copper removal the lead bullion is brought to a temperature of 440°C in a kettle of 60 metric tons capacity. Some tar (or sawdust or resins) is usually added and the kettle is cooled slowly to 400°C while the liquid is stirred. A solid phase, called a dross, floats on top of the liquid and the particles of the solid phase adhere to the tar. This "hot dross" is collected. It contains mostly lead and copper which are partly oxidized and/or sulfurized if the lead bullion contains some sulfur.*

Construction of Flaming Gorge Dam in northeastern Utah necessitated the construction of a new state highway, Utah-260, to provide access to the dam and the town of Dutch John. A 550-foot arch structure was designed to span Cart Creek, about one mile southwest of the dam. The rock exposed at the site is highly fractured quartzitic sandstone with interbedded shale of the Precambrian Uinta Mountain Group. Eight exploratory holes were drilled, four in each abutment area, to determine rock types, the extent of fracturing at depth and rock strength. Drill cores in the west abutment revealed blocks of quartzitic sandstone loosened by the weathering and partial removal of underlying shale beds. The rock in the east abutment area was found to be highly fractured to depths of 70 feet and as far east as 50 feet from the footing locations. Selected core sections were tested for unconfined compressive strength but the values were not considered-representative of the in-situ fractured rock. To prevent movement along or, perpendicular to open fractures, four drilled-in columns were provided at the base of each footing. These extended 50, feet beyond the base of the footing, along the bearing and inclination of the thrust reaction.

Past attempts to establish an integrated steel industry on the West Coast of Canada have been unsuccessful for at least three reasons: (a) insufficient reserves of a suit-able iron ore supply; (b) a relatively small local market for iron and steel; and (c) the non-availability of an economical process to produce primary iron on a small scale. Today, the reserves of economically mineable ore deposits are ample to support a steel production of 100,000 to 200,-000 tons per annum. The local market has increased so as to be able to absorb most of this capacity. With-in the next few years, a small integrated steel plant, including the "H-Iron" direct iron ore reduction process for electric furnace charge stock production, will be able to show a profitable operation. Tests with a high-pressure water jet were conducted in the steeply pitching Roslyn No. 5 bituminous coalbed in the Roslyn No. 9 mine, Roslyn, Wash., to determine the feasibility of extracting coal from pillars and from a solid coal face in development without drilling and blasting. During pillar mining, using a hand-held monitor, the best results were obtained with a 0.150-inch- diameter nozzle, a water pressure of 3,500 psi, and a flow rate of 38.5 gpm.3 The rate of mining and productivity were 0.74 ton per minute and 16.6 tons per man-shift, respectively. During development mining, using a monitor mounted on a roof jack, the best results were obtained with a 0.148-inch-diameter nozzle, a water pressure of 4,500 psi, and a flow rate of 40.0 gpm. In one section of the mine where the coal was relatively hard, the rate .of mining and productivity were 0.10 ton per minute and 5.7 tons per man-shift, respectively in another section of the mine where the coal was relatively soft, the rate of mining and productivity were 0.51 ton per minute and 8.3 tons per man-shift, respectively. The tests showed that hydraulic mining methods were more productive than conventional mining methods in pillar mining. In development the productivity of hydraulic mining depended primarily upon the coal hardness. Compared with conventional methods, hydraulic mining methods were less productive where the coal was relatively hard and equally as productive where the coal was relatively soft.

Using a scratch smoothing technique, the magnitude and the ratio of the surface diffusion coefficients (D,) in two orthogonal directions have been measured on copper for over 100 different surface orientations. Anisotropy was found for all surface orientations except those lying near the (100) and (111); however, these anisotropies were rarely greater than 2.0. The direction of maximum D, appears to coincide with the direction of step edges on any given surface, and if no such steps exist, no anisotropy is found. Thus the jump frequency along a step edge is shown to be faster than the frequency of a jump over the step. The values of Ds and AH for the (100) and the (111) orientations agree quite well with those obtained earlier by the grain boundary grooving technique. It is proven that the directions of maximum and minimum D, (the principal axes) for any surface orientation are known if the perfectly ordered plane corresponding to the given surface orientation possesses a plane of mirror symmetry. Thus the principal axes of D, for orientations lying along the sides of the unit stereo-graphic triangle are always known independent of the extent of thermal disorder or impurity adsorption. The merits and shortcomings of King and Mullins' recently published equations relating Ds to the rate of scratch smoothing are discussed. 1N an earlier paper the authors have reported the variation of the surface diffusion coefficient (Ds) with surface orientation on copper.' In that study Ds was determined from the rate of growth of grain boundary grooves on symmetric bicrystals. This gave values of Ds from 850° to 1070°C in a given direction on each of the six surfaces. It was found that the activation energy for surface diffusion was essentially the same for all six surfaces. The theory developed to explain these data assumed that the free energy of any given type of surface site depends only on the number of nearest neighbors the atom has. This same theory predicted that on any given surface Ds should be independent of direction. The primary aim of this study was to check the validity of this prediction for a wide range of surface orientations on copper. The growth of grain boundary grooves is ideal for studying Ds in a given direction on a given surface over a range of temperatures, because the same specimen can be repolished and used again. However, there is considerable work involved in growing a symmetric bicrystal, and for a survey of Ds in two or more directions on many surface orientations, the technique would be arduous. A better technique appeared to be the scratch method used primarily by Mykura. 2 If a scratch is placed in a surface whose surface tension is independent of orientation, the surface will smooth out in time under the influence of surface tension. To determine D, from this flattening, Blakely and Mykura2 used an approximate solution which was assumed to describe the rate of flattening. Recently King and Mullins3 (hereinafter K and M) have given a more exact analysis of the flattening of an isolated scratch. A second aim of this paper was to check the validity of this newer analysis and compare the values of Ds determined thereby with the values obtained from grain boundary grooving techniques. Conventional rock-bolt anchors often fail when installed in weak formations. The purpose of this work was to develop an anchor that would utilize an explosive charge to secure anchorage in any type of rock. Laboratory work to develop a rock-bolt anchored by explosive forming was initiated using rock-bolt models which had a drilled explosive chamber and were composed of various metals. This was followed by the use of several types of seamless tubing which were expanded with a water-coupled explosive capsule. By attaching a length of solid bolt to the anchor tube, a prototype explosive-anchored rock bolt was made. More than 150 laboratory models were expanded during this phase of development, During two field tests in underground mines (A and B) and one in an open- cut mine (C), 87 explosive-anchored bolts, 9 slot-and-wedge bolts, 2 bolts anchored with expanding grout, and 28 expansion-shell bolts consisting of three types of shells were installed and subjected to pull tests. The field tests were run to determine the effects of variables such as the amount and placement of the explosive charge, design changes in the bolt, and the effect on anchorage of different pull-test techniques. The field tests revealed the following: Mine A. The explosive-anchored rock bolt was feasible, but changes were necessary in bolt materials and in some details of bolt design. Mine B. The design and materials of the bolt gave excellent results in hard fractured rock, but no information was obtained concerning variations in the dimensions of the anchor unit or in the explosive charge. Nine C. Varying the explosive charge to produce a beaded surface on the bolt tube and tightening of the anchored bolt before pull-testing were found to increase significantly the anchorage obtained in soft ground.

The influence of plastic deformation in compression on the self-diffisivity of a iron has been measured in the temperature range of 742º to 885°C. The diffusivity is enhanced in proportion to the strain rate, but this dependence decreases with increasing temperature. The magnitude of the strain is relatively unimportant in this connection. Strain rates from 0 to -2 x 10-3 sec-1 were investigated, with a corresponding increase in diffusivity up to 3 x 103 times. The results are analyzed in terms of vacancy diffusion and the excess vacancies introduced during dejornzntion. It is concluded that grain boundaries are the main vacancy sinks in polycrystalline iron and that the vacancy lifetime is therefore dependent on the grain size. A typical vacancy lifetime at 800°C with a nzean grain-boundary intercept of 0.3 cm is of the order of 1 sec. LATTICE imperfections are considered to be the dominant mechanism of diffusion in close-packed crystals. Vacant lattice sites are usually the most important defect, but the enhancement of diffusion along grain boundaries and other short-circuiting paths has been well documented. Inasmuch as plastic straining produces a variety of defects, it would be expected that the application of stresses sufficient to cause plastic flow during a diffusion run might result in an increase in the self-diffusivity. Enhanced self-diffusion in a iron under compressive creep has been observed by Buffington and Cohen' and subsequent coworkers.2 Lee and Maddin3,4 have also found an enhancement in the self-diffusivity of silver single crystals undergoing torsional deformation. On the other hand, Darby, Tomizuka, and Balluffi5 have not observed any significant diffusion increase in single crystals of silver deformed either in tension or in compression, although the results in this case may have been affected by the occurrence of recrystallization. With poly crystalline silver, however, Forestieri and Girifalco6 have found en- hanced diffusion during compressive creep. A small decrease in the self-diffusivity of zinc single crystals under compressive loading has been reported,7 but the applied stresses in these experiments were too low to cause appreciable plastic deformation. For the cases in which enhanced diffusion has been found, a number of common effects have been noted. Usually, the ratio of the diffusivity during straining, Ds, to the diffusivity in the unstrained condition, D,, varies linearly with the strain rate, and does not seem to be a function of the plastic strain, at least up to ? = 0.2. Values of Ds/Du of the order of 100 have been reported'-4 but the enhancement decreases with increasing diffusion temperature. The activation energy for diffusion decreases markedly with increasing strain rate and approaches a level of roughly one-half the unstrained value. Most of the current explanations of these observations assume that excess vacancies are generated by the deformation, but rather large concentrations of excess vacancies and/or long lifetimes are required by these theories.',',',' Since the original work on iron, there has been an important improvement in the compressive-loading technique.2 The early data were also analyzed without taking into account the motion of the coordinate system in the specimens undergoing plastic deformation. This problem has now been solved by a number of investigators (see Refs. 11, 12, and the appendix of the present paper). Consequently, the strain-diffusion runs on iron for the Ds measurements were repeated and extended over wider ranges of temperature and strain rate. In addition, the original diffusivity data9 on the unstrained iron have been corrected for the divergence of the beam in the counting system and new data points have been added, resulting in somewhat different values for the self-diffusi-vities in a iron.10 The new values for Du are used in this paper. A comparison of Ds and Du confirms the large enhancement in the self-diffusivity of iron during compressive creep, as previously reported.',2

Bureau of Mines Research has demonstrated that it is technically feasible to segregate oxidized copper ores by use of a direct-fired, refractory-lined rotary kiln. Previously, the segregation process had been effected only in much more complicated indirect-fired, stainless steel kilns, The method comprises heating crushed ore premixed with small quantities of salt and carbonaceous material, such as coke, to about 830° C to produce copper as fine flake and metallic films on the surface of the coke particles. After grinding of the cooled furnace calcines, the copper is recovered by conventional flotation. During direct-fired segregation it was necessary to closely control the air-gas mixture in the burner. Good copper recoveries were obtained only when adding air in the limited range of 1.15 to 1.2 times the theoretical amount required for combustion of the natural gas. Batch trials of the new technique on quartzite-, limestone-, sandstone-, and limonite-type oxidized copper ores containing from 1.4 to 6.2 percent copper yielded flotation concentrates containing from 3.7 to 45 percent copper, representing 84 to 95 percent recoveries. Analyses of the furnace gases showed that loss of copper by volatilization was negligible. The preliminary direct-firing segregation studies were complemented by continuous runs on the quartzite ore, containing 1.4 percent copper, in an integrated segregation-flotation pilot plant having a 60 pound-per-hour capacity. In a typical test, 84 percent of the copper was recovered in a cleaner flotation product containing 25 percent copper. The study will be continued to further delineate the conditions for good segregation as effective use of standard ceramic-lined kilns will render the process more attractive from a commercial standpoint.

In 1957 and 1958, ten topographically suitable damsites were investigated along the Peace river between Finlay Forks and Hudson Hope, B.C. Of these, three were eliminated after a reconnaissance survey indicated that the geology was unsuitable for the 650-ft.-high dam contemplated. ?After extensive drilling, five other sites were deemed unfeasible because of geological factors and, in 1959, the two remaining sites were designated as being suitable, one for the high dam and the other for a low dam downstream. The sites are located in the Peace River canyon, on the west and the south? side of Portage mountain, west of Hudson Hope. The site for the large dam, the Portage Mountain dam, has since been investigated by surface mapping, thousands of feet of diamond drilling, a seismic survey, laboratory rock tests and on-site grouting tests in order to establish the possible effect on the dam of all facets of the foundation rocks. Three diversion tunnels, 50 ft. in diameter and 2,200 feet in length, have been driven through massive sandstone and shale, and an intake cut, 500 ft. in length, 200 feet in width and 200 feet in depth, has also been excavated in rock.

This paper reviews the three major distillation processes: multiple effect (LTV) evaporation, multi-stage flash distillation and vapor-compression forced circulation evaporation. Scale preventative measures are discussed for all saline water applications. Operational data is presented on the Freeport, Texas, demonstration plant, which is the first government facility to produce one million gallons per day of fresh water for a municipality. There has been much publicity concerning the water crisis that confronts many peoples today. There is little doubt that the arid regions - which include the Middle East, parts of Africa and the Caribbean — have suffered to no slight extent for the lack of this most precious commodity. But what about our own country? Government experts have extrapolated demands and flatly predict that by 1980 we will be faced with a shortage of 80 billion gal per day. The validity of this prediction has been disputed by others; however, it appears certain that there will always be a natural abundance in some areas, a shortage of supply in other areas. Distributing our total natural water resource equitably would be impossible. Transmission of water by means of aqueducts can be an expensive undertaking. The controversial Feather River Project in Calif. is an example. The estimated cost for this venture is a staggering three billion dollars. As our population continues to increase and our standard of living rises, agricultural and industrial requirements will be proportionate. What can be done to avoid a crisis? We can conserve and use our water for industrial and irrigation purposes more judiciously: we can attempt to eliminate pollution of our natural resources from sewage and industrial wastes; we can develop, while there is time, saline water conversion processes for the massive production of low cost fresh water. The scope of this paper will be limited to only the distillation type processes that are commercially feasible. The first step in making potable water is to find a source of raw material. An inexhaustible supply is provided by oceans in coastal regions, but the supply of water is more critical in the inland communities of our country. The source of raw material in these. regions is brackish well water and this must be utilized. There is a significant process difference when handling brackish water compared to seawater and this brings out an important fact: No single conversion method can be universally applied to solve all the water problems. Composition of the raw water and degree of distillate purity are factors which must be considered before a particular process is selected. Local conditions at the plant site, fuel costs, labor costs, disposal facilities, etc. are other equally important factors which must be evaluated. WATER CONVERSION PROCESSES Conversion processes commercially feasible today are: 1) multiple effect evaporation, 2) multiple flash distillation, 3) vapor compression distillation and 4) electrodialysis. The first three are distillation processes which take potable water out of the raw water, while the fourth is a membrane process which takes out the salt. In addition to the above there are a good number of other promising methods for production of potable water, many of them in the basic research stage. Freezing is another promising process with commercial potential. This process hinges upon the formation of ice crystals which are free of salt occulsions. Separation and washing of the crystals are problems that must be solved before this process can be considered commercially feasible. Freezing processes have several advantages mostly attributable to the low temperature of operation. This low temperature reduces the scaling and corrosion problems encountered in higher temperature operations. Several different freezing processes are being considered and will be tested in the pilot plant at Wrightsville Beach. One process is a flash freeze process, a second uses a secondary refrigerant such as butane for freezing, and a third process employs a secondary refrigerant particularly controlled to produce large ice crystals. The process for which it is to be used is too often the only consideration in the design of a vessel. A de-sign allowing for practical manufacture and erection, as well as for proper maintenance, can often give over-all economies. Most platework in-stalled today is of welded construction. Therefore, metallurgical control is important in its manufacture. Also, because many concentrating and re-fining processes tend to be corrosive, the subject of protective coatings as a part of the manufacturing process is extremely important. The plant de-signer should know how to evaluate and specify controls for the metallurgy and for the coatings. Mining operations are becoming more sophisticated in the field of mechanical engineering. More and more emphasis is being given to preventive maintenance. The first step in any maintenance program, however, is good inspection service. This paper will suggest methods for the inspection of platework, and outline methods for repair and replacement.

Time variations in the copper content of the sediments of streams draining mineralized areas were studied in two areas of contrasting climatic environment, one in northern and one in southern British Columbia. In each area, samples were collected and observations made of rainfall, stream discharge and air and water temperature at intervals throughout the summer season. Samples were analyzed for total and cold-extractable copper. Results showed a weak inverse relation between cold-extractable copper and discharge in two out of the three test sites in the southern area, and a decrease in ratio of COld-extractable to total copper over the duration of the test period at a highly anomalous site in the northern area. In suspended rock flour resulting from glacial erosion of mineralized rock in the northern area, virtually all the copper was found to be soluble in cold, dilute hydrochloric acid. None of the variations observed is sufficient to cause serious problems in geochemical sediment surveys. Systematic collection and trace analysis of stream sediments has seen wide application in recent years as a method of primary prospecting in primitive areas. Common practice is to collect fine-grained samples of sediment either from the active channel or from the flood plain near the channel. Samples are dried, sieved and the -80-mesh fraction analyzed after breakdown of the sample by a relatively strong attack, such as by fusion or by treatment with hot perchloric acid. Drying, sieving and rigorous chemical attack requires established facilities, either in a well equipped central laboratory or in base camp. Thus analysis for total metal involves a substantial delay from the time the samples are collected until the analytical data can be reported. An alternative system uses a cold aqueous extrac-tant in place of the hot acid or flux.4 Advantages of the cold-extraction techniques are that kits can be prepared for use directly at the sample site and that, in some problems, the patterns in cold-extractable metal, usually abbreviated cxMe, are more useful as ore guides than the patterns in total metal.' In the course of operational geochemical sediment surveys, a problem that has come up repeatedly is failure to reproduce anomalous values or patterns by resampling the same areas. The mystery of the vanishing anomaly has led to speculation as to whether there is a significant variation in the metal content of sediment samples with the weather or with the time of year. Review of the published literature shows that a number of experiments have been carried out on time variations in the metal content of stream water.1,2,5,7-9 The only published report on time variations in stream sediments that has come to the authors' attention, however, is by Govett,3 working in Northern Rhodesia.

Several of these compounds have been prepared and fabricated into compacts. The apparatus used for hot pressing, and for the measurement of thermoelectric power, electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity, is described. Detailed attention has been given to the properties of the nitrides. Preliminary studies on a number of other uranium compounds are reported. The figures of merit of the best materials so far examined are one-tenth of those necessary for a useful thermo-electric material. THE efficiency of thermoelectric materials for power generation and cooling is determined by their figure of merit, Z = a2 a/K, where a, a and K are thermoelectric power, electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity, respectively. It is well known that the largest values of Z are achieved with semiconductors (1). This report presents a cross section of the sand and gravel operations in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area. The study covers individual operations, economic problems peculiar to the industry, glacial geology of the area and its effect upon the grades and types of products, and past, present, and future trends of the expanding population and its effect upon the industry.

Twelve millisecond delayed blasts in four limestone quarries in Iowa were instrumented with arrays of vertical velocity gages to determine if the direction of propagation through the rock or the method of initiation of the blast had any effect upon the level of vibration. Two gage arrays approximately 90° apart were used to test the effect of direction of propagation. The vibrations from blasts initiated by three methods were recorded. Vibration records from these tests were analyzed for peak particle velocity as a function of distance from the blast. The data are shown to fit a power Law equation. Direction of propagation is shown to affect the value of the exponent n. The effect of charge size per delay interval on the level of vibration is removed from the data by scaling the travel distance by the square root of the charge weight per delay period. The method of initiating the blasts is shown to have a strong effect upon the level of vibration and the spread in the data from one shot to another.

My first contact with underground, bolt conveyors came when I was hired as a draftsman by the La-Del Conveyor & Manufacturing Company in 1935. At that tine relatively few nines were using haulage belt conveyors. Wore they were in use, they were usually loaded by chain or shaker type room conveyors which in turn were hand loaded at the working face. Duo to the low room tonnage, a gathering belt might receive who output of from six to eight rooms. For several years belts 26 and 30" in width were the favorites for coal mine use. Belt speeds very seldom exceeded 200 ft. per mm. at that time. Conveyor lengths for the majority of units lay between 1.000 and 2000 ft. For a number of years 25 H.P. drives were adequate for those conveyors. From 1940 until about 1950 loads and speeds went up slightly and 40 H.P. drives became the standard. Since the majority of mines were then using direct current power systems, we were able to use controllers with 3 or more steps of starting resistance. The slow belt speeds coupled with relatively long starting cycles kept the rate of acceleration low and gave us smooth, easy starts.
