A surfactant waterflood, using a block copolymer of ethylene and propylene oxide (PLURONIC L64*), wa., started in 1956 in Kansas to determine the commercial feasibility of such a process. The production formation was the Bartlesville sand at a depth of 1,400 ft. Leares in the test area had attained both primary and secondary production peaks, and were on a normal decline when the tests were initiated. The injection wells were taking water at a reasonable pressure and none of the operating conditions were particularly unusual. The leases were selected primarily because of normal operating conditions, and not because of any serious problems demanding remedie>,. Oil production and water injection data were recorded during the 10-year test period, and their compilation indicates that the surfactant resulted in an increase of about 9 percent in secondary oil production. Other benefits derived from the surfactant injection were lower injection pressure that resulted in reduced power consumption and reduced erosion of the pumps; and lower calcium scale buildup. These fringe benefits more than offset the cost of the surfactant used. Introduction During the past several decades, considerable research has been carried out on secondary recovery of crude oil that remains in the producing formation despite the most efficient, current primary production practices. Methods are constantly sought of increasing recovery of oil, while at the same time improving the economic efficiency of operations. One method that has received intensive study over the years is the use of a surfactant as a waterflood additive. Laboratory tests show conclusively that dilute solutions of surfactants remove considerably more oil from uncon-solidated sand cores than does water alone.'- The loss of surfactant by adsorption at solid-liquid interfaces has caused serious doubt that surfactants can be used economically as waterflooding additives. This is especially true with anionic and cationic surfactants, and to a lesser extent with nonionic surfactants. This work was undertaken to determine the effectiveness in increasing oil production by injecting water containing small quantities of a nonionic surfactant. The surfactant selected was PLURONIC L64*, a block copolymer based on ethylene and propylene oxide, having the following structure The selection of the test site, a typical shoe-string sandstone type of field located at Batesville pool, Toronto District of Woodson County, Kans., was made because of its normal primary and secondary recovery operating conditions, and not because of any serious operating problems. When the tests were begun, the field was experiencing the customary post-peak production decline of a waterflood. Using for the tests a field that was on a normal production decline, while maintaining constant all variables other than the addition of the surfactant. was of varamount importance if success or failure was to be attributed to a particular cause. It was reasoned that if a surfactant was added to the injection waters and nothing else was done to influence the oil production or injection of water, the effects of the surfactant on the flood could be determined precisely. Production History The first well in the tested field was drilled in 1935. Gas repressurization began immediately, but it was not until Aug., 1938, that the major portion of the field was developed. During the period of repressurization, 1,700 MMcf of gas was injected. As can be seen from the curves of Fig. 1, the production peak from gas injection was attained in 1937 and a normal production decline followed. The final cost and quality of a project employing equipment, labor, and materials is dependent upon the expediency and extent to which each of these parameters are used. An ideal solution then, would be one in which three solvable equations were given for each particular situation. The equipment, labor, and materials could then be solved for, and the perfect job would result. In reality, however, the ideal and most economical solution is seldom attainable by solving three given equations. Therefore, knowledge, experience, and sometimes guesswork must be relied upon when correlating equipment, labor, and materials. Drilling and blasting, in particular, is one operation which normally involves more uncertainty than other operations. It is also an operation in which the outcome is extremely critical for two reasons. First, the cost of the operation that follows drilling and blasting is dependent upon how well the material is fragmented. Second, once the drilling and blasting has taken place, it is impossible to return to the area, without considerable expense, and correct any mistakes that might have been made. Therefore, what is desired is a method by which drilling and blasting operations can be performed yielding optimum results at the lowest cost; this can best be accomplished by having the relationships between equipment, labor, and materials prior to their use. For obtaining best results, the selection of these three relationships must be based on knowledge, experience, and as little guesswork and uncertainty as possible.

This Bureau of Mines report describes the preparation characteristics of the significant coalbeds of Clay, Gilmer, and Lewis Counties, W. Va. In 1966, almost 1.3 million tons of coal was mined in these counties, of which more than one-half was from the Pittsburgh coalbed. Washability analyses were made of 16 coalbed samples. Of these, only 11 samples could be upgraded to metallurgical quality. For steam or power generation five of the coals were of low sulfur content as received. The remaining samples were generally of medium sulfur content even after upgrading.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the conversion of nonmagnetic iron minerals to magnetic form through reduction Toasting operations. The primary objective was to obtain a concentrate that could be used as a direct shipping material for blast furnace consumption. Crude iron materials from the Steep Rock Lakes, Ontario, area were prepared into a blend of 8 parts siliceous ore, 3 parts pyritic ore, and 1 part tailings. Experimental work included laboratory reduction roasting tests, two continuous 10-day campaigns, and one 12-hour test all in a 34-inch by 36¬-foot rotary kiln. The objective of the project was achieved in producing an iron concentrate containing about 66 percent iron with over 90 percent iron recovery. Desirable operating conditions were developed in the kiln but optimum process variables were not completely established.

"This paper deals with the varions methods for the rapid Joading of unit trains which are being: used by ore procossors to move their product to dock-s1de storage facilities or their ultimate customer. Some of the techniques that have been used include (1) volumetrie loading, both in motion and static, (2) batch weighing into moving cars and (3) batch weighing into cars that have been stopped. Particular emphasis shall be placed on the two systems now in use at the Adams Mine facility of Jones and Laughlin Steel Corporation and at Cliffs of Canada's Sherman Mine. Typical ""turnaround"" times, loading rates, types of cars, weighing accuracies, material handling concepts and maintenance considerations shall be discussed."

Modern business practice dictates that in order to ensure the economic optimization of investment, the size of any investment venture must be such that every increment of capital invested in such a venture yields at least a corporate minimum acceptable rate of return. This practice is based on the premise that alternative investment opportunities capable of yielding the minimum corporate return are immediately available. If a mining corporation is to make the maximum use of its investment funds, any capital investment in a mining property must comply with the above practice. The most important parameter in estimating ore reserves is the cut-off grade which is used to separate material into ore or waste. The cut-off grade is calculated on the basis that material of cut-off grade produces sufficient revenue to cover the estimated costs of mining and processing through to sales, including depreciation and produce a pre-determined profit. Ore reserves so estimated are adequate for determining the magnitude of an orebody but do not provide a sound basis for determining plant size and therefore capital investment in a new property or for expansion consideration on an existing property. From a financial analysis of this one ore reserve it is impossible to ascertain whether each increment of capital investment is providing the minimum acceptable rate of return, Other difficulties associated with the calculation of a cut-off grade including the determination of depreciation and the amount of pre-determined profit to be included in the cut-off grade calculation are outlined in the text. The proposed solution to determine optimum ore reserves and plant size for new properties avoids the complication of calculating a cut-off grade by computing a series of ore inventories using arbitrarily selected cut-off grades. A comparison of the cash flows generated by production from such ore inventories using incremental financial analysis clearly indicates the ore reserve and plant size which will best serve the corporation's investment and metal production goals. Incremental financial analysis of a corporation's operating mines and prospects assists management in assessing the comparative expansion and investment possibilities of each property for increasing or maintaining metal production on a long term basis.

Recovery, recrystallization, and texture development of a cold-rolled aluminum-killed steel have been studied during simulated box annealing. Two different initial conditions existed prior to cold rolling: 1) essentially all of the nitrogen in solid solution and 2) most of the nitrogen precipitated as AlN. The combined effect of nitrogen and aluminum in solid solution before annealing was to inhibit recovery and sub-grain growth at temperatures above about 1000°F and to raise the recrystallization temperature range on continuous heating at 40°F per hr from 1000"-1050°F to 1065"-1085°F. For the material with nitrogen and aluminum initially in solution there was an inhibition in the nucleation of the (001) [110] texture component and an enhancement of the (111) [110] texture component. The differences in annealing behavior mzd texture development are attributed to preprecipitation clustering of aluminum and nitrogen at subboundary sites developed by prior cold working. THE annealing of cold-worked aluminum-killed steels has been the subject of numerous investigations.'-'2 These studies have been concerned with kinetics of recrystallization, with microstructure and texture development, and with the individual and combined effects of composition, thermal history prior to cold rolling, and heating rates during subsequent annealing. It has been shown that the inhibition of recrystallization, and the development of the pancake-shaped grain and recrystallization texture characteristic of aluminum-killed steels, can be associated with the precipitation of A1N particles during a recrystallization anneal involving heating rates in the range 20" to 80°F per hr. If the AIN is precipitated before cold rolling or if more rapid heating rates are employed, the cold-rolled steels recrystallize more rapidly to an equiaxed grain structure and texture comparable to that of rimmed low-carbon steel. The retardation of recrystallization, the development of the elongated grain structure, and the pronounced (111) texture have been attributed to: 1) precipitation of A1N at prior cold-worked grain boundaries to form a mechanical barrier to grain boundary migration;' 2) precipitation on the boundaries of the growing recrystal-lizing grains as well as on cold-worked grain boundaries;'" and 3) preprecipitation clustering or precipitation on subboundaries to retard recovery, nucleation, and growth. The present study was undertaken to study in more detail recrystallization and texture development during commercial box annealing of cold-rolled aluminum-killed steels. Comparison of the annealing be- havior after cold rolling, for two different conditions prior to cold rolling, was made in an attempt to define more clearly the role of aluminum and nitrogen in forming the recrystallization texture. A) MATERIAL AND PROCEDURE The material used in this investigation was a commercial low-carbon aluminum-killed steel which was hot-rolled with a finishing temperature of about 1565"F, then coiled at about 1020°F. The composition, in wt pct, was: 0.050 C, 0.30 Mn, 0.007 P, 0.019 Si, 0.03 Cu, 0.02 Ni, 0.02 Cr, 0.045 Al, and 0.004 N. Two 4.5 by 13 by 0.078 in. sections were cut from the center section of a hot-rolled panel and one of these was reheated to provide two different conditions prior to cold rolling: low AlN: as commercially hot-rolled, with aluminum and nitrogen in solid solution; and high AlN: as commercially hot-rolled, then reheated at 1300°F for 3.5 hr to precipitate most of the nitrogen as AlN. ~etallc&a~hic examination indicated that the reheating did not change grain size nor carbide distribution (some spheroidization of pearlite was noted). Texture analysis at half-thickness level showed that both sections had the same substantially random as-hot-rolled texture. The results of check chemical analysis of each sample are given in Table I. Both sections were cold-reduced 65 pct on a laboratory rolling mill to a final thickness of 0.027 in. Cold rolling, in one direction only, was in the direction of the prior hot rolling. Specimens 1.0 by 1.25 in. were cut from the cold-rolled sheets and given a simulated box anneal in an atmosphere of 2 pct HZ-98 pct He. Specimens were heated at a constant rate of 40°F per hr from room temperature to various temperatures in the range 750" to 1300°F and cooled immediately by withdrawal to the water-cooled end of a tube furnace. The temperature in the 6-in. uniform hot zone of the furnace was controlled within 3"F. Selection of the individual specimens was made to give a random distribution of annealing temperatures with respect to location in the cold-rolled sheet. At least two specimens of each condition were annealed to the same temperature and smaller specimens for light microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray studies were prepared from each of these. "Nuclear reactors must have very large heat outputs to compete with conventional sources and the only feasible applications are in the production of electric power or large quantities of process steam. This paper considers alternative fuels for electric power generation in Canada. In a publicly owned utility, nuclear stations are economic for base-load generation for unit sizes of 500 mega• watts or larger where competitive fossil fuel costs are higher than about 30 cents per million Btu. In British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan, fossil fuels will continue to be in adequate supply at costs lower than 30 cents per million Btu and thus, except for the special case of Vancouver Island, power generation in Western Canada will continue to be the hydraulic and conventional thermal type. In Eastern Canada, fossil fuel prices are likely to be higher than 30 cents per million Btu and most utilities will be able to install units of 500 mw or larger, so that nuclear power plants will provide much of the base-load generation required. Base-load generation comprises about two-thirds of the energy generated by power utilities. By 1990, the total annual electrical energy load will be over 600 billion kwh, with two-thirds of this load in Eastern Canada. Allowing for additional hydraulic resources which may be developed in Quebec, British Columbia and Manitoba, hydraulic generation is forecast to provide a little more than a third of this electrical energy, nuclear generation a third and fossil-fuelled generation about a quarter."

A belt of serpentinized ultrabasic rocks intrudes a moderately folded geosynclinal sequence of fine to coarse sediments, acid, intermediate, and basic volcanics as well as a batholithic mass of granitic rocks. The ultrabasic body contains small included masses of melanocratic and leucocratic rocks, together with chromium, copper, zinc, and nickel mineralization.

"The material presented in this paper will be subject to modification as new data become available, but it is presented in the hope that it will inspire more intensive mineral exploration and geologic studies of what appears to be one of Canada's richest mineral provinces. A metallogenic province 400 by 150 miles in extent, lying mostly northeast of Tintina trench, encompasses most of the base metal deposits of Yukon, as well as deposits of other metals. Its main features are northwesterly trending arcuate fold belts, with several orogenic axes, which include most of the metamorphosed rocks, granitic intrusives and mineralization; and which are modified by regional uplifts, northwest-striking fault trenches, and lesser transverse folding and faulting.The main base metal occurrences and their regional controls are summarized briefly. Most of the replacement-type deposits are localized in late Proterozoic to early Paleozoic rocks, particularly Lower Cambrian -probably because these are the most physically and chemically favourable hosts encountered in an appropriate temperature and pressure environment; perhaps because of early age of deposition. Most of the deposits also occur near heat sources or intrusives with associated structural uplift, which has, moreover, served to expose the older rocks. They also tend to occur near known or suspected regional fault trenches, such as Tintina, Macmillan and Hess, although this relationship may be fortuitous. In detail, they may be localized in fold axes, flat-lying beds or other appropriate structural traps. Vein-type deposits are fracture-controlled and localized by dilational localfties, the competence of wall rocks and ""damming"" effects.In the Anvil district, large stratiform iron-zinc-lead replacement deposits lie parallel to gently plunging flex-ures in phyllite in a zone parallel to the Tintina trench, along the southwest flank of the arch-like Anvil batholith. About 80 million tons of massive sulphide ore probably existed before erosion of the Faro orebody, the Vangorda deposit could have been of similar magnitude before erosion and much more tonnage probably remains to be discovered in the district. The Anvil deposits may differ from others found to date in Yukon, but resemble the Sullivan orebody of southeastern British Columbia in their large size, localization in essentially non-limy peptic to arena-ceous host rocks of Proterozoic or early Paleozoic age and proximity to the Rocky Mountain -Tintina trench sys-tem. These features suggest an origin from primordial subcrustal sources.More major ore deposits, not only of lead, zinc and copper but probably of other metals as well, will no doubt be found in similar environments in Yukon or Alaska. Thus, the base metal province of Yukon offers challenging opportunities for prospecting, development, field studies and basic research."

"A large-scale expansion to Pacific Coast Bulk Terminals Ltd. has now been completed and placed in operation. The original plant, built approximately eight years ago, consists of the direct rail-car to ship transfer of bulk commodities. The extension includes additional rail-car unloading, a transfer house system for directing commodities to storage or ship, major storage and reclaim facilities, a second shiploader and a second deep-sea berth. In addition to the facilities for overseas shipments, a wood-chip loader and a barge berth have been installed for domestic shipments of wood chips and, occasionally, for other local commodities. The design considerations imposed by the nature of the products to be handled are covered in this paper."

Since the start of mining operations at White Pine in 1953, over 22 miles of drifts have been driven for the purpose of developing the ore body. The drifts, normally driven in multiples of three or five headings, serve as conveyor belt routes, ventilation ducts, equipment and haulage roads, and initial access to mining blocks. Development openings in the flat-lying, bedded ore body are driven in rectangular section from 16 to 32 feet wide and from 8. 5 to 16 feet high. The floor level normally coincides with the bottom limit of the chalcocite values and the roof or back is carried at the most competent stratum adjacent to the top of the ore. A development front consisting of five headings and associated crosscuts is advanced at an average rate of about 100 feet per month using conventional drill and blast techniques and equipment. The cyclic nature of the functions involved in driving the openings and the need to include them in production schedules preclude significant improvements in advance rates using current drill, blast, muck, and haul sequencing.

The study of the excavation of large spherical cavities in salt formations first became of interest in 1958 when it was recognized that a large cavity could be of value in the study of the detection or concealment of underground nuclear explosions. Previously unpublished studies are reported in this paper and other studies reviewed relating to the excavation of large cavities in salt by mining ad by solution. Special emphasis is placed on the utilization of the Tatum salt dome (about 22 miles southwest of Hattiesburg, Mississippi) for the proposed site of a large excavated cavity. The U. S. Atomic Energy Commission has recently been studying such a cavity as Project Payette, but no details have yet been published. If Project Payette is determined feasible and work funded, it would eventually involve the firing of a nuclear explosive at the center of a large cavity.

"This paper is the result of a continuing investigation begun in 1953 by government geologists and mining companies. Previous work is reviewed and the development of several stratigraphic nomenclatures and correlation schemes is traced, culminating with the interim report of the Federal-Provincial Committee on Huronian Stratigraphy formed in 1966.The stratigraphy, structure and correlation of the Huronian rocks of the Blind River area and the region between Sault Ste. Marie and Sudbury are reviewed. The area is underlain by three Precambrian units: (1) the Archean greenstones and granites, (2) the Huronian sedimentary and volcanic rocks and (3) the post-Huronian intrusive rocks. The Huronian rocks, largely quartzite and conglomerate with greywackes, argillites and carbonates, were laid down in shallow water transgressing over the eroded Archean basement. Thickness and facies changes indicate a northwesterly source, northerly overlap and deposition controlled by basement topography. Polymictic conglomerates, occurring at least at three horizons, represent tillites and are associated with varvites with dropped clasts. These are best developed in the Gowganda formation, which varies from a continental glacial environment in the north to a marine glacial environment in the southeast.There were at least three phases of post-Huronian igneous activity, probably related to several periods or phases of late Precambrian deformation and metamorphism: (1) sills of Nipissing diabase and rather younger diabase dikes; (2) the Cutler Granite and Croker Island Complex; and (3) dikes of Keweenawan olivine diabase.Copper mineralization is associated with the Nipissing diabase. The uranium ores are found in pyritic quartz-pebble conglomerate near the Huronian Archean unconformity, particularly in ancient valleys; they are considered to be placer deposits modified by later events. Uranium production from the Blind River camp to the end of 1966 was 128,160,096 pounds U308 valued at $1,203,840,848 derived from 56,077,179 tons of ore grading 0.11 per cent U308.Within the Blind River and adjacent areas, future discoveries will probably be the result of costly systematic deep-drilling programs accompanied by detailed geologic studies of the type carried out by oil companies and probably computer-oriented."

The kinetics of the inter granular penetration and embrittlement of [100] tilt boundaries in 99.998 pct pure nickel upon exposure to bismuth-rich Ni-Bi liquids have been determined in the temperature range from 700° to 900°C. The kinetics of penetration are parabolic in time at constant temperature over most of the temperature range. In a series of 43-deg bicrystals the rate of penetration is anisotropic with respect to the direction of penetration into the grain boundaries. In lower-angle bicrystals the penetration rate is isotropic. The rate of penetration decreases with tilt angle at 700°C. The activation energy for penetration in the 43-deg bicrystals is 42 kcal per g-atom independent of direction. It is concluded that the intergranular penetration and embrittlement in the presence of the liquid proceeds by a grain boundary diffusion process and not by the intrusion of a liquid film. This was confirmed by a determination that the kinetics of penetration and embrittlement were the same in the 43-deg bicrystals upon exposure to bismuth vapor under conditions such that no bulk liquid phase would be thermodynamically stable. WhEN solid metals are exposed to a corrosive liquid-metal environment, the grain boundaries are sites of preferential attack. Depending on the temperature, the composition of the liquid, and the composition, structure, and state of stress of the solid, a number of modes of attack are possible. This paper reports a study of the kinetics of intergranular penetration and embrittlement of high-purity nickel bicrystals upon exposure to bismuth which, together with an earlier study by Cheney, Hochgraf, and Spencer,&apos; demonstrates that there are at least two modes of intergranular attack possible in the Ni-Bi system. In the study by Cheney et al., columnar-grain specimens of 99.5 pct pure nickel were exposed to liquid bismuth presaturated with nickel in the temperature range 670" to 1050°C. They found that the majority of the boundaries, which were predominantely high-angle boundaries, were penetrated by capillary liquid films, the attack proceeding by a process which will be termed grain boundary wetting. This process occurs in a stress-free solid when twice the liquid-solid surface tension is less than the surface tension of the grain boundary,* i.e., when 2yLs < YGB In this case the penetration of the grain boundary by the liquid occurs at a relatively rapid rate, resulting in the severe embrittlement of a polycrystalline solid. Grain boundary wetting is a common mode of intergranular attack in systems in which the lower melting component is relatively insoluble in the solid, but the solid has an appreciable solubility in the liquid, for example, the Ni-Bi system, Fig. 1. In systems of this type at temperatures above the range of stability of any intermetallic phases, once the liquid is saturated with respect to the solid so that no gross solution occurs, chemical gradients are small, and surface tensions become major driving forces for attack, provided the solid is stress-free. The results of Cheney et al. appear to be typical of those encountered when grain boundary wetting occurs.&apos; Capillary films were observed in the boundaries after quenching from the exposure temperature. The mean depth of penetration increased linearly with time, and the activation energy for the process was found to be 22 kcal per g-atom. In a study of the Cu-Bi system Yukawa and sinott4 found that the depth of penetration of bismuth into high-purity copper bicrystals of orientations from 22 to 63 deg of tilt about (100) at 649°C ranged from 0.05 to 0.25 in. after a 12-hr anneal. This corresponds to a linear rate of 6 to 15 X 10~6 cm per sec. At the same reduced temperature of 0.68 the rate for the Ni-Bi system&apos; was 7 x lo-&apos; cm per sec. In another study of the Cu-Bi system, Scheil and schess15 determined the kinetics of grain boundary wetting in hot-worked commercial rod. While there were several complicating factors present in this study, there is general agreement with the above results. The kinetics of penetration were linear, the activation energy was 20 kcal per g-atom, and at 650°C the rate of wetting was 2 to 5 x 10-6 cm per sec. "Accelerated expansion of Western Canada's metallurgical coal industry has again stimulated considerable exploration activity in the Rocky Mountain Foothills Belt and influenced much of the R&D related to transportation, processing and carbonization. Preparation R&D has included further pilot-plant work on desulphurization, spherical agglomeration and modified compound cyclones (which are also proving themselves in other mineral beneficiation studies). Combustion research, aside from increasingly stressing control of combustion source pollution, has directed special attention to lignite PF firing and problems arising from lignite ash. Studies directed toward the non-fuel utilization of coal have centered on such diverse topics as active carbons, carbonaceous filter media, plant nutrients and industrial applications of humic acid derivatives. In addition, a number of long-range research projects related to such matters as coal chemistry and pyrolysis have been actively pursued, and further attention has been given to improved sampling techniques and analytical methods."

"The wide interest in the application of the geochemistry of mercury to mineral exploration is leading to the continued development of a variety of analytical methods for the determination of nanogram quantities of this element. The various methods have different degrees of reliability, sophistication and portability. In this investigation, two simple portable instruments were used in geochemical prospecting surveys -an ultra-violet absorption instrument and a similar one modified with gold for the removal of interfering substances. The results show the application of the method to the determination of mercury in soils of different organic content, and in rocks, sulphides and air."

"For several years, the existence of a deposit of barite (BaS04) near Brookfield, Nova Scotia, has been known. A very large deposit of strontium (SrS04) near Sydney, Cape Breton, is a more recent discovery. Cape Chemical Syndicate has been formed to work the deposits. A five-million-dollar integrated mineral processing and chemical plant is planned for Sydney to produce various compounds of barium and strontium. The mineral processing plant includes the Jones Wet Magnetic Separator and will produce high-purity barite and celestite. These products will be processed further in the fine grinding plant and the chemical plant. The general project is described, covering the deposits, processing and markets."

An outline of the main features of the M.D. 6 Defectograph will be given, and the method of operation and results obtained will be described.The instrument will accommodate ropes at 7 /16-to 2 %-inch diameter at reasonable speeds, and is capable of detecting the most minute defects in even the largest-diameter wire ropes."

The objective of this paper is, firstly, to summarize several field developments utilizing the art of hydraulic fracturing as it has been extended into various mining applications. Secondly, to summarize the understanding of the hydraulic fracturing processes; and lastly to discuss researchable areas and possible future applications. Hydraulic fracturing was developed as a method of stimulating production of oil from oil producing formations. The primary paper by Clark (1) in 1949, describes the process of placing a hydrostatic pressure of sufficient strength on the producing formation of an oil well that the rock apparently cracked, and then, on allowing the well to flow back, a higher rate of recovery of oil was enjoyed. The interpretation of the process mechanism was that the formation rock was cracked to a considerable distance from the well bore, increasing the drainage area; thus, the productivity of the well was measurably improved. Figure 1 is illustrative of this process. This development was of major significance to the oil producing community and considerable research and development ensued. Improvements in method, engineering development of equipment, and research to ascertain the optimum application of fracturing practice led to a highly sophisticated, but specialized technology. The Production Research Division, Continental Oil Company, vigorously pursued research in this area in the 1950&apos;s with a resulting number of process improve¬ments. The research group, published a significant number of technical papers on these various researches. One of the developments was the process aimed at controlled orientation of the fractures, either in the vertical (2) or horizontal (3) orientation.
