The paper by Lewis and Braun l presents experimental and calculational evidence that primary chalcopyrite ores are rapidly oxidized by warm oxygen-bearing water. Resulting solutions contained copper sulfate products of the matrix rock decomposition such as magnesium sulfate and sulphuric acid. Iron was oxidized to insoluble hematite and hydrous iron sulfates. Oxygen injection near the base of a broken and permeable flooded ore deposit was calculated to cause circulation of oxidizing solutions to the entire permeable region. The rate of dissolution of copper and degree of oxygen saturation for given oxygen injection rates were presented. Their work suggests that in-situ recovery of deep, disseminate primary copper deposits is technically feasible. The actual feasibility depends on economics and environmental safety as well, and it is the purpose of this paper to address these two aspects.

The purpose of this work was to investigate the rate at which coal is delivered from the underground working face by gathering arm type loaders as employed on continuous mining machines, to identify the factors -- geometrical, geological, mechanical, or procedural which affect the delivery rate, and to develop quantitative rate descriptive equations for the loading function. The mathematical techniques employed were factor analysis and multiple linear regression. It was determined that the coal-cutting function of the continuous mining machine is the factor that primarily influences the loading function. The geometrical factors -- the dimensions of the work area in relation to the dimensions of the mining machine - were the factors of secondary influence. Fifty-five percent of the experimental variation in the loading function was explained in terms of the six most prominent independent variables. It is expected that this work will be useful in operations-research studies as applied to underground coal mining, and with refinement will enable mine planners to select equipment based on the operating characteristics of the equipment and the mining conditions.

"The ocean has served humanity as a source of raw materials for thousands of years, but only on a minimal scale relative to its potential. Exploration programs have shown the ocean to contain a large number of mineral deposits of great extent and attractive grade. Recent research has indicated that a number of these deposits can be economically exploited with present-day technology and that the cost of winning many industrially important minerals from the oceanic deposits is potentially much less than that of winning similar minerals from land deposits. Although the finding of mineral deposits in the sea is a relatively simple matter at the present time, the exploitation of many of these deposits has lagged due to the lack of the availability of specific mining techniques for the individual deposits. Within the past two years, however, several developments have taken place in the design and testing of ocean mining systems in depths of water as great as 12,000 feet which indicate that the problem of mining in the ocean may soon be solved.Within the next decade, the ocean should prove to be a major source of many minerals for society and should come to dominate as a source of such metals as copper, nickel, cobalt, manganese, etc. Within a few years of the initiation of the mining of the deep-sea metalliferous nodules, land sources of such metals as nickel, cobalt, copper, manganese, etc. will be seriously affected and it is conceivable that the present structure of the world mining industry will undergo a substantial change in character."

Shaft construction is assuming ever increasing importance when new mining enterprises are considered. The reasons for this increased emphasis is the much greater depths at which many new ore-bodies are being developed and the rapid depletion of near surface reserves requiring mines to go to greater depths on existing deposits. These greater depths increase the probability of exposure to unfavorable geologic conditions and it is more likely that high ground and/or water pressures will be experienced at these depths. The large capital costs involved and the critical position of a shaft in the overall mining program necessitate that this element of project development be given careful and critical consideration. The Henderson No. 2 Shaft is located in the Rocky Mountains of north central Colorado (See Figure I), about 55 miles west of Denver, near the community of Empire in Clear Creek County. At the 10, 442 foot collar elevation, winter arrives in late September and brings snow to contend with until May. The labor force for Shaft No. 2 is approximately 90 men. They are provided access to the project via all-weather U. S. Highway 40. SHAFT DESIGN The Henderson No. 2 Shaft is a 28-foot I. D. circular, concrete lined (1 foot thick) vertical shaft. The Jamaica Mining Legislation requires the bauxite companies operating in the island to reclaim all mined-out lands (except those legitimately excluded) to the level of agricultural or pastoral productivity, which existed prior to the commencement of mining. If it is not possible to reclaim a mined-out area the companies are required to reclaim an equivalent area of some other land which had not previously been used for agricultural purposes, or alternatively, pay to the government the sum of $120 (US) for every acre of land mined in the particular sector. In the seventeen years since the programme commenced the companies have in general chosen to reclaim most of the mined-out lands, rather than the cheaper alternative. However, the ultimate success of the programme will depend not only on actual reclamation per se but moreso the productivity of the rehabilitated lands. There are a number of reasons why the accent has to be placed on productivity of the lands. The first is that Jamaica is a small country (4,450 square miles) with a population of nearly 2 million people. Because of its mountainous terrain it is estimated that only 35% of the land area is cultivable in crops and pastures; hence this limited area, as well as that which can be reclaimed, must be made highly productive in order to support local and export demands. The Mining companies own over 200,000 acres of land, and of this acreage, it is conservatively estimated that about 75,000 will be affected by mining and will be reclaimed. As such, the use of the land after mining can have an important bearing on Jamaica's future agricultural productivity. The Granduc ore body is located beneath glacial terrain on the borders of British Columbia and Alaska, some 600 miles from Vancouver and 30 miles from Tidewater at Stewart, B. C. The concentrator and attendant facilities are located in wilderness country at an elevation of 2500 feet. The average annual snowfall is 65 feet. Surface facilities and ore body are linked by a 10 mile railroad haulage tunnel. This copper property has been developed by Granduc Operating Company on behalf of Newmont Mining Corporation and American Smelting and Refining Co. First production started in November, 1970. In August, 1966, Granduc Operating Company awarded an engineering and construction management contract to McKee-Swan Wooster, a joint venture of A. G. McKee of Canada and Swan Wooster Engineering Company Limited, to design a concentrator to treat approximately 7000 tons of ore per day. The isolated location of the Granduc ore body indicated comparatively high freight rates on consumable items of concentrator supplies such as reagents, grinding media, etc. A firm flowsheet for the flotation of the Granduc ores having been developed by the Danbury laboratory of Newmont Exploration Limited, attention was devoted to means of reducing operating costs. One obvious method was to reduce or eliminate the costs of steel grinding media by employing some form of autogenous grinding. two pilot plant operations were carried out at the facilities of Lakefield Research of Canada Limited, in which autogenous grinding of Granduc ores was investigated. The terms environment and environmental control, when used in today's context, generally imply to the average individual, something to do with pollution and pollution control. These latter terms, likewise, impart visions of fouled air and dirty water attributable largely to the industrial segment of American society. We have been conditioned, by various means, over the past ten years to equate environ¬mental control with pollution control. We have been trained to think of industrial environmental control programs as efforts conceived only to comply with one or more of the recently imposed pollution control regulations. Almost automatically we; approach consideration of environmental control with a degree of pessimism that is we assume that pollution prompted the control program. It is the purpose of this discussion to demonstrate that environmental control. at least as it exists and has existed within the crushed stone industry, involves far more than simply control or reduction of air and water pollution. It involves a dedication to the enhancement of each of the several "mini-environments" which together comprise the total world surrounding any given crushed stone operation. Environmental control, exercised properly, is an optimistic, constructive, forward-looking, enhancing type of activity. It is a function which has been, and should continue to be, willingly and expectantly undertaken by informed management personnel. In short, environmental control. is an activity from which both industry and society can and should benefit.

The research presented here was initiated to investigate the role of atmospheric oxygen in the leaching of copper waste dumps. The problem of increasing the recovery rate of copper from these dumps is or great importance considering there are by conservative estimate in excess of fifteen billion pounds of copper located in dumps in the western United States. At this time, there is an increased interest in recovering copper from these dumps on a large scale. Large tonnages of low-grade material are being placed on the waste dumps of most copper mining operations in the western United States each day. The size of these dumps ranges from 5.5 million tons at Mineral Park, Arizona, to 4 billion tons at Kennecott's Utah operation (1). Leach solutions are recycled and contain ferrous and ferric sulfates. Large quantities of dissolved aluminum, magnesium and calcium salts may also be present. To this solution make up water is added to maintain the solution inventory and sulfuric acid is added for pH adjustment. Iron is introduced into the leach solution by the dissolution of the iron-containing sulfide and oxidized minerals present in the ore deposit. In addition to the iron from dump leaching, iron is also introduced during the precipitation process when the pregnant solution is passed over metallic scrap iron if cementation is used to reduce the copper in solution.

When the Middle Ages were drawing to an end and Rotterdam, then still a small fishing port, began to extend its trade relations to continental ports handling general cargo, a development was initiated which was to give Rotterdam a predominant position in maritime traffic in Europe 300 years later. Despite many setbacks and the silting up of the mouths of the Rhine and Meuse rivers, the port experienced a new rise towards the end of the previous century after the dunes at Hook of Holland had been cut through as planned by Dutch engineer Caland. With its favourable location in the mouth area of the Rhine and a hinterland opened up by waterways it was merely a matter of the city council pursuing a far-sighted policy to make the best of these natural advantages. Thus new port installations were erected on the southern bank of the Meuse in the first quarter of this century, which were expanded in the course of the subsequent decades. The New Waterway became the main artery for industrial enterprises, in particular oil industries, which sprang up along its banks (picture 1). Whereas 30 years ago Rotterdam's Waalhaven, with its new jettees for general cargo and mainly bulk goods, was still one of the most modern terminals, the growing size of ships, which increased by leaps and bounds for tankers, in particular towards the end of the 'fifties, necessitated much larger harbour facilities built further and further towards deep water.

This section contains a summary of our investigation of the soil conditions (type, porosity, moisture content, etc.) at the two sites (Lanse and Kato, Pennsylvania) selected for field testing of latex as a soil sealant. Other natural conditions such as rainfall, frostline, depth of the water table, etc., were also measured and recorded for possible later use in assessing the effect of the latex seal on the total environment. The numbered sites referred to throughout this report are shown on the maps of the Lanse and Kato sites (Figures 1 and 2). KA, RB and KC are positions at the Kato site - all other numbered positions refer to the Lanse site. Two other terms used throughout the report which should be explained are “horizon” and "profile". These are synonymous terms for soil layer, A horizon (or A profile) referring to topsoil and B horizon (or B profile) referring to subsoil. The properties that control the flow of water through the soil are of special interest because these will also govern the passage of a sealant into and through the soil. Normally the particle size distribution is a good measure of soil permeability, which is directly proportional to sand content and inversely proportional to silt and/or clay content. Tables I1 and I11 show the percentages of gravel or stones, sand, silt and clay of Lanse and Kato soil samples. According to the United States Department of Agriculture classification, the gravel is ,ignored and the residue separated into sand, silt, and clay fractions. Figures 4 and 5 indicate by means of the USDk soil texture triangle that the variability of composition of Lanse soil ranges from sandy loam in the creekbed to clay loam. The variation is even greater among soil samples from Kato. Porosity of soil, also known as percent voids, is another indication of how readily water will travel through soils. Soil density usually increases and porosity decreases with depth, and as expected, the porosity of the top soil at Kato, a forest, is exceptionally porous and open (see Table IV) The pore diameter and length of soil capillaries is extremely variable, and its distribution in the field is impossible to determine. In addition to the capillaries, soil also contains many macro cracks, crevices, and passages around stones and roots. All these affect the flow rate of water through soil. Poiseuille's law states that the rate of flow of a liquid through a narrow tube is proportional to the 4th power of the radius of the tube. Pore size normally decreases with depth and in soil containing appreciable amounts of silt and clay this is especially true. Thus, deeper soils should be less permeable and such was the case at Lanse and Kato.

The Organic Act of 1910 established the Bureau of Mines and gave it authority and responsibility for conducting research on separation, recovery, and recycling of waste products and scrap generated by the mineral and metals industries and the consuming public.(1)1 It was apparent to our Nation's leaders even then that mineral resources, once mined, are irreplaceable and that the development of methods for recycling the values contained in wastes would be required to solve the problem of even¬tual scarcity, Estimates of the increase in per capita consumption of mineral resources in this country indicate that the consumption of metals, minerals, and fossil fuels by 1980 will be double that consumed in 1970 (2). The United States can expect to meet its future mineral needs in three basic ways: the first is through increased production of primary raw minerals; second by increasing imports from foreign sources; and third by recycling secondary materials and metals that were formerly discarded as waste. Stress relief measurements were made at three underground test sites associated with the Henderson project, American Metal Climax, located in the rugged, mountainous region between Loveland Pass and Berthoud Pass on the Continental Divide in Colorado. Sufficient data were obtained to determine the three-dimensional stress ellipsoid for each site. The measurements were made at hole depths greater than one diameter of the mined opening; thus, calculated stresses are representative of premining in situ conditions. The vertical components of stress are in good agreement with overburden depth including the influence of mountain topography. Horizontal components of stress substantially increase with depth. These components are believed to be influenced by stresses presumably of tectonic origin. The largest measured principal stress was 5,900 psi at a depth of 3.708 feet. The predominant orientation of maximum principal stress for the determinations at greatest depth is in the NW-SE quadrants.

Leo-potpourri, was selected as the title to this paper for several reasons. First, it is a fascinating word--not looking like it sounds or sounding like it looks. It also allows for a great degree of flexibility in designing a presentation around it. Further, it has become popular to use this eco hyphen something pattern. We hear of eco-mania, eco-hysteria and the like. Lastly, in this era of intense environmental concern, two of the principle elements on which the integrity of our efforts must be equated are ecology and economics. Accordingly, the term "Eco-potpourris" allows me to roam at will through the great number of considerations that make up this environmental issue. Whereas only a few years ago the subject of environment and environmental control had low visibility with the public, today it competes as the focus of attention with the many other popular social issues of our time. The program content here at this meeting, for example, is liberally represented by papers dealing with one or more aspects of environmental concern. If one would look at the 1964 program, in contrast, I would expect that no more than possibly one or two papers covered this subject and even then that those papers dealt principally with the environmental aspect of occupational health. It is gratifying that the program at this meeting demonstrates a serious awareness to a broad spectrum of environmental concerns. It would be a mistake, of course, to believe that this clamor for a quality environment is a "flash in the pan" that will soon subside. Enormous quantities of organic wastes are produced each year in the United States. The total amount is in excess of 2 billion tons and at least 880 million tons of this is moisture- and ash-free organic material (dry organic solids), representing a potential energy source of significant magnitude that is not being utilized. Bureau of Mines scientists have developed methods for converting these wastes to convenient energy forms. This report itemizes and evaluates for the first time in detail the quantities and sources of moisture- and ash-free organic material contained in manure, urban refuse, industrial wastes, sewage solids, and agricultural wastes in the United States. Furthermore, estimates are presented for amounts of organic wastes collected or concentrated. The potential for fuel, either oil or gas, from both the total organic wastes generated and those collected or concentrated is also estimated.

Sound design of structures founded in or upon rock requires that the deformability of each rock member involved be characterized. This can be done by means of loading tests (plate bearing, flat jacks, borehole jacks, pressure chambers, etc.) or through convergence measurements (tunnel convergence, roof sag, etc.) in exploratory works. Analysis of data will be qualitative (degree of nonlinearity, creep behavior, scattering of results over a number of sites, etc.) and quantitative (modulus of elasticity or deformation). Some of these tests involve a very bulky apparatus and are expensive to perform. On the other hand, for the purpose of mapping and describing the various rock members which occur within a given site, many feet of diamond drill holes are frequently completed. Even with the optimum equipment and expert drillers, however, quantitative characterization of the rock units on the basis of tests on returned samples is apt to be misleading; the softer and weaker components of the rock tend to be lost and the fabric of the rock block- fracture system in situ is not sampled. Laboratory moduli of elasticity have proved to be consistently higher than in-situ values selected for engineering purposes. This led to the design of instruments which would operate in boreholes, combining the advantages of a reduced size and a deeper investigation, from the surface to several tens of feet. Sanitary land filling has become one of the most widely used methods of disposing of solid refuse. A principal concern of regulatory agencies and the public itself is that landfill operations do not degrade the physical environment, including water resources, and the ground-water reservoir in particular. Knowledge of ground-water and engineering geology can guide landfill operations into suitable terranes or develop measures to compensate for natural limitations at a particular site. Experience and research in Illinois suggest four activities relating to landfill disposal that warrant attention by geologists and engineers: (1) regional delineation of favorable and unfavorable hydrogeologic conditions to facilitate planning and preliminary screening of potential landfill sites; (2) site evaluations, with considerations of geologic materials, topography, water levels, flow systems, and local occurrence and use of water resources; (3) research on aspects of the hydrogeologic environment that control effects of, or are modified by, landfills; and (4) formulation of practices in the siting, construction, and operation of landfills that prevent, mitigate, or isolate deleterious effects. The first two activities are basically in the domain of earth science, requiring the application of fundamental concepts of geology and hydrology and conventional site-exploration methods. The third activity, research, requires contributions from geology as well as other disciplines, including soil physics, sanitary engineering, and chemistry. The fourth calls for policy decisions by regulatory agencies and elected officials, using the contributions of scientists and engineers. Throughout history, man has disposed of unwanted materials by dumping. As urbanization has increased, haphazard dumping practices have given way to disposal under more controlled conditions because of increasing congestion of population and production of waste and greater concern for public health and environmental amenities. Many states and communities have already outlawed open dumping and open burning of refuse. The only practical methods of disposal of large volumes of refuse, therefore, are contained, high-temperature incineration, or burial in a sanitary landfill. In Illinois, regulation of solid waste disposal has been delegated to the Environmental Protection Agency. Each session of the legislature since 1965 has passed increasingly strict laws regulating waste diposal. As a result, the work of evaluating sanitary landfill sites has increased significantly for both the Department of Public Health, now the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Illinois State Geological Survey, which advises the Agency on matters of ground-water geology and pollution. In fact, our ground-water staff spends as much time on studies relating to waste disposal, primarily sanitary landfills, as on ground-water resource studies. Many other geological agencies are experiencing similar demands for increased assistance in solving waste-disposal problems. This paper summarizes some of the salient features of the sanitary landfill concept, describes activities of the Illinois Geological Survey in ground-water and engineering geology relating to landfills, and suggests policies that need consideration. A sanitary landfill is located and operated in such a way that vermin and pests, nuisances, and degradation of air and water are kept at acceptable levels. Some of the physical requirements of a sanitary landfill are all-weather roads for year-round access, fences to retain blowing paper, a daily cover of at least six inches of suitable earth material, and a final cover of at least 2 ft of earth material. Dumping into or adjacent to standing water generally is not allowed. Two common operating techniques are used. In the first, trenches are dug, the refuse is placed in them, and the earth removed from the trenches is used to cover the waste. In the second method, area fill, refuse is placed in low ground and covered with earth from adjacent high areas. The hydrology of the site is a prime consideration in locating sanitary landfills. Putrescible refuse, if saturated above field capacity, produces a leachate that usually has a high concentration of dissolved solids.2 As the leachate also acts as an agent for transporting bacterial pollutants, it constitutes a potential pollution hazard. To reduce the production of leachates, the topography of the landfill area should be such that surface water will not flow into or through the fill. Operations that will result in refuse disposal below or near the highest known water-table elevation may be required to take corrective or preventive measures to protect the ground water. In practice, under humid conditions such as prevail in Illinois, locations where disposal can take place above the water table are relatively few because surficial materials are commonly fine-grained, which permits slow gravity drainage and results in high degrees of saturation (100% moisture content) near the surface. At some sites, although disposal has taken place above the water table, ground-water mounds have developed, resulting in permanent saturation of the refuse. The objective of this project was to investigate the feasibility of analytical techniques potentially capable of determination of Mg, Al, Si, S, Ca and Fe in 1 to 2 mg samples of respirable coal mine dust, in a total analysis time of not more than 10 minutes per sample, using equipment capable of being truck mounted for field-laboratory operation. It was not essential that the technique be non-destructive, but the chosen technique is, and this enables the analysis to be performed directly on the 37 mm diameter membrane filter on which the respirable dust sample is normally collected. The sensitivity requirements are therefore quoted in terms of the units of measurement, µg/cm2. The detection limit (3o of the background criterion) should be 0.5 µg/cm2 or less. The precision should be 5% or better, at concentrations above which the detection limit is not the determining factor.

Recent changes in the field of ore and bulk commodity handling has forced a reevaluation of previously conceived notions. When vessels were small, and sources of raw material were reasonably close to areas of need, the role of the shipping terminal was of secondary importance. Now terminals must be built to take advantage of the economic benefits of the supercarriers. The shipping rates of the 80's will not be determined by the 60,000 DWT or even 150,000 ton capacity bulk carrier, but rather by the supercarriers in the 250,000 DWT class or larger. When the Suez Canal was closed, the shipping industry took a hard look at the economics of the large bulk carrier. Naval architects overcame the problems and successfully designed large supertankers, which today are plying the seas in excess of 350,000 DWT. Orders have been placed for tankers of 480,000 DWT. The shippers of dry bulk materials are now coming to similar conclusions about the economics of supercarriers. As of today, over 40 orders have been placed for vessels in the 250,000 DWT class, representing an investment of over 11/2 billion dollars, and many more are being considered. These vessels are being designed as combination ore/oil (0/0) or ore/bulk/oil (OBO's) carriers. The oil industry has seen the need for terminals which can accommodate these supertankers. The dry bulk shippers, and particularly ore shippers, must now act.
