Recycled materials are increasingly being used in road construction to supplement natural aggregate derived from crushed stone, sand, and gravel. An understanding of the amount of substitution that is taking place, its economics, and factors affecting the level of substitution is useful in estimating the potential for recycling and in assessing the total supply of aggregate. While U.S. consumption of recycled aggregates from crushed concrete is estimated to have increased 160 percent between 1994 and 1996; it comprised less than 5 percent of total aggregates consumed in 1995. Construction waste supply is regional, and is determined by infrastructure decay and replacement rates. Aggregate recycling rates are greater in urban areas where infrastructure is being replaced, natural aggregate resources are limited, disposal costs are high, or strict environmental regulations prevent disposal. Recycling is expected to increase as construction contractors attempt to save on transportation, disposal, and new material costs. Aggregate producers include recycled material as an option to consumers in order to prolong the life of their reserves and improve their range of products. Recycled aggregates can be a supplement for natural aggregates in selected applications, but their use should be evaluated locally based upon relative cost, quality, and market factors Because aggregate recycling is often affected by local and regional transportation systems, disposal and tipping fees, resource supply, the market for specific products, and municipal support, costs for three representative fixed site operations of different sizes were modeled. Under study conditions, all were found to be profitable, but highly dependent upon local tipping fees and market prices, which can differ significantly by location. Smaller operations were found to have different operational dynamics, often requiring creative marketing or incentives to maintain profitability.

Seventy-three of the 90 naturally occurring elements that are found in the earth's crust are metals or metalloids. The quantities of metals used annually in the United States range from about 100 million metric tons (steel) to a few kilograms (osmium). The recovery of metals from discarded products or industrial process wastes, especially those metals that are used in large quantity, are very expensive, or are unusually toxic, is important to the national economy and to the natural environment. From its inception in 1910, the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has been the Government's prime source of information on metals recycling, as well as a major innovator in recycling technology. Statistical data on scrap generation and processing have been summarized annually for many years in the USBM's Minerals Yearbook. Most of the data for individual metals discussed in this report were extracted from that publication.

Pile foundation is widely used in construction of marine structures. In offshore & marine piling work, drilling/boring supporting fluid is used to stabilize the borehole (excavation) prior to tremie concrete. The poly-fluid is a synthetic drilling granular polymer characterized by high molecular weight.it is mainly used for the preparation of stabilizing and lubrication mud in drilling of deep foundations. Disposal of polymers after using it into the sea, pollutant the sea environment, which may be harmful for living organisms inside sea. To reduce the pollution in offshore/Onshore, it is essential to take the precautions during flushing operation with proper recycled, reused & it’s Disposal. To provide economic and environmental solutions, used slurry was treated with addition dose of fresh material/polymers. The amount of fresh materials/ Polymer to be added can be decided based on (viscosity, density and pH value) test results. Finally, initiate water flow and air agitation as required. Run the tests on the re generated slurry before transferring to storage tank. Also, after storage, polymers will be reused for next operation. Moreover, mud wastage coming from borehole will also be disposed at suitable dumping places.

The development of newer and improved electrical products has led to an increase in the rate at which older products are discarded as waste. The main focus of electronic waste is the printed circuit board (PCB) because of the inherently high value of contained metals such as gold and copper. Several options for treatment of the non-metallic fraction including material recycling, where the residue may be used as inclusions in concrete or asphalt materials with minimal processing or chemical recycling, where chemicals and fuels are produced from the residue using pyrolysis exist. In this paper, the utilisation of the non-metallic leached PCB waste fraction as reductant in secondary copper smelting was investigated. Analysis of the leached residue revealed that PCB is highly amorphous and has a carbon content of 28.5%, an oxygen content of 23.1%, with the ash and volatile matter contents 40.1% and 44.8% respectively. Thermodynamic simulations of secondary smelting of copper were conducted in terms of metal recovery, and the energy required when PCB was used as a reductant. The results were also compared with that of coal and PCB-coal blends. The simulations revealed that as PCB in the blend used as reductants increases, the amount of energy required for the smelting operation decreases. Metal recovery slightly decreased as the mass percent of PCB in the blend increased due to lower carbon content present in PCB relative to coal. The results also highlighted the energy saving with PCB-coal blends which was around 160 kWh per ton of feed relative to coal. The decrease in the amount of energy required for the operation is attributed to the higher volatile content of the PCB, which is also a part of the reduction process. The Arvida Smelter marked its 80th anniversary in 2006. Arvida currently operates 6 potrooms equipped with prebaked side-feeding pots producing 160 000t of aluminum per year, requiring the supply of 300 000t of alumina per year. In the past, to ensure reliable alumina supplies to the pots, especially in winter, a safety stock of alumina was kept inside the plant. The improved reliability of shipping on the Saguenay River has cut the need for such a stock. However, the stoppage of 8 Soderbergtechnology potrooms, starting in the 1980s up to 2003, generated alumina from the cleaning of pot pits, totaling 18000t and leading to the building-up of a significant alumina stock again. Concerns over working conditions, effect on potroom operations, and dust emissions prevented Arvida from tackling effectively this impressive alumina stock. Yet the increasing cost of alumina has created a strong motivation to use the stored alumina. In 2004 Arvida launched a project to recycle the stored alumina. This 4-year project aimed at clearing the alumina stock without affecting the operation of the smelter. It involved changing work organization, improving equipment and controlling the effect of the recycled alumina on the smelting process and working conditions.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines, Tuscaloosa Research Center, is conducting a review of the usage of different types of refractories, the current industrial practices to recycle/dispose of spent refractories, and the concerns associated with these practices. This information will serve as the technical basis for initiating a research program to recycle or find alternate uses for spent refractory materials. Approximately 1.6 million metric tons of clay based and 1.2 million metric tons of non-clay based refractory materials were manufactured in the United States in 1992 alone, representing a value of almost 2 billion dollars. Landfill has been and remains the disposal means of choice. Issues such as environmental regulations, concerns over landfill disposal, future liability, and product stewardship programs have brought about increased emphasis for recycling or alternate material use. Information on refractory consumption and the issues associated with recycling or disposing of used materials will be discussed, including current recycling practices.

Mine land reclamation is a comparatively new science-Although some mining companies point with pride to reclamation efforts of 20 to 30 years ago these were the exception rather than the rule. In the last ten years the skyrocket of environmental awareness has been awesome to behold. Future shock gripped mine operators everywhere as they struggled to cope with rapidly changing and escalating demands. The initial result was that two divergent points of view became dominant. Environmentalists said, "Put it back the way it was," and the miners responded, "Let's grow some weeds and hide it." These views are not surprising as they represent rather obvious alternative responses, albeit at opposite ends of the decision spectrum. The former case has prevailed more often than the latter, as most state and federal legislation -- both proposed and passed -- has required drastic alteration of the post-mining landscape so that evidence of prior mining is largely obliterated. An exception to this has been in porphyry copper country where the infrequent abandonment of mines has given emphasis to the second philosophy -establishing vegetative cover on mine waste materials. Now, it should come as no revelation to most mining people that both of these approaches to mine reclamation suffer from serious drawbacks when applied to open pit copper mines. First, whereas waste dumps and tailings dams can be vegetated with some aesthetic benefit, the massive presence of copper mining operations remains very prominent. It is difficult to conceal an open pit copper mine. Second, returning open pit copper mines lands to their original topography and productivity is simply not a reasonable alternative.

Growing demand for valuable battery materials and environmental issues from battery disposal make the recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) essential. Specifically, the green approaches using organic reagents have garnered many attentions for battery recycling. In this study, a synergetic organic leaching system using methanesulfonic acid (MSA) of strong organic acid and citric acid (CA) with good chelating ability was investigated to extract valuable metals from LiCoO2. Hydrogen peroxide was used as a reducing agent to enhance leaching kinetics. Cobalt extraction of 98% and lithium extraction of 97 % were achieved in the optimized condition; 2.4M MSA, 1.6M CA, 1.0 vol% H2O2, S/L ratio 80 g/L, 85 °C, and 1 h. The optimal leaching condition of the MSA-CA mixed leaching system exhibited good applicability to various cathode scraps, such as LiCoO2, LiNixMnyCo1- x-yO2, and LiNixCoyO2. The dissolved Co and Li ions in the MSA-CA leachate were selectively recovered with high recovery efficiencies of 99 % and 97 % as Co3O4 and Li3PO4, respectively. The recovered Co3O4 and Li3PO4 were utilized to regenerate cathode materials. LiCoO2 and LiFePO4 were also synthesized through a solid-state reaction and hydrothermal method. The recycling process based on the MSA-CA-H2O2 synergetic leaching system was proposed, and it might be applied as a green and economical organic leaching system for the recycling of various types of spent LIBs.

"Jet grouting is a method of ground improvement that relies on the erosive capacity of high-speed jets to cut and mix the ground in place with a cementitious grout. A continuous return flow of cuttings, called jet grout backflow or spoils, is expelled to the surface during the grouting process. Data from projects completed in Toronto and Ottawa is presented where BOS Solutions’ services provided significant savings compared to the traditional spoils treatment utilizing vacuum trucks for spoils disposal. These traditional treatment methods are cumbersome and expensive by nature. BOS Solutions provided an alternative solution that is environmentally friendly and capable of handling full flow to process these jet grout spoils utilizing a tank system paired with centrifuges and flocculation additives to remove the ground soils and grout product from the spoils slurry. BOS’ process produced a clean water for reuse in the project while reducing the overall waste volume by producing a dry, stackable solid that could be hauled to a landfill. Benefits observed by using the BOS process were disposal waste volumes decreased over 30% and at least a 19% reduction on disposal costs.SCOPE OF WORKJet grouting is a method of ground improvement that relies on the erosive capacity of high-speed jets to cut and mix the ground in place with a cementitious grout. For the projects completed in Toronto and Ottawa, the jet grouting work was performed at street level, in high traffic congested areas, presenting the challenge of insufficient space for the contractors to process the jet grout spoils in the traditional way. At first, attempts were made of using vacuum trucks to collect and haul the wet spoils to an off-site location where the spoils would be allowed to solidify. However, this method proved cumbersome and expensive due to the high volumes of spoils generated daily and the high number of vacuum trucks required to support the jet grouting operations, respectively."

EAF dust has been listed as a "hazardous waste" due to the presence of lead and cadmium, and at times chromium. The 550,00 tpy production of . .EA]' dust, estimated for the United States alone, contains more than 10,000 tpy of lead and about 250 tpy of cadmium in addition to nearly 1'00,000 tpy zinc. Even though the listing of .EAF dust as a hazardous material stimulated extractive metallurgical work worldwide, process development efforts have focused only on the recycle of the potentially-valuable zinc units. However, the recycle of the lead and cadmium, while not lucrative, is the more critical effort. Horsehead Resource Development Company, Inc. (HRD), in conjunction with its sister company, Zinc Corporation of America (ZCA), has taken a unique approach to total recycle of the toxic heavy metals found in the EAF dust. Impure oxide, produced by either a Waelz kiln or FLAME REACTOR Process and containing the lead and cadmium, is calcined in a rotary kiln at Palmerton, Pennsylvania, to produce a refined zinc-rich intermediate for ZCA's electrothermic zinc plant at Monaca, Pennsylvania. During the calcining operation, lead and cadmium are concentrated in a fume product and shipped to ZCA's electrolytic plant at Bartlesville, Oklahoma. At Bartlesville, a new hydrometallurgical circuit has been constructed and the existing cadmium plant expanded. The combined facilities permit the total recovery of cadmium to refined metal and the lead to .a silver-rich intermediate, which is sold to lead smelters. In this paper the Waelzing, calcining and new leaching facilities will be described.

Under the Resource Conservation and Recovery ACT (RCRA), generators of listed or characteristic hazardous wastes must find satisfactory means for disposal. of wastes. Initially, for many this meant landfills and deep-well injection. Until recently, mining and metallurgical by-products have largely been exempt from RCRA, but now are coming under its jurisdiction. With the increasing closures of landfills, companies in the U.S. such as electroplaters, miners, metallurgical plants and others are turning to recycling as an alternative to treat their wastes. While the cost of recycling has been challenging, the long-term economics prove attractive because recycling interrupts the cradle- to-grave responsibility for the waste generator. The present paper describes the recycling of hazardous wastes at ENCYCLE/TEXAS. Encycle extracts marketable metals from metal-bearing sludges and wastewater using hydrometallurgical processes borrowed from the mining and metallurgical industry.

HYDROMETAL is using suitable technology to reintroduce lost metal units into the industrial cycle, thereby saving resources and energy while keeping the environment cleaner. Hydrometal is treating on average 60000 t per year of complex materials through a unique hydrometallurgical recycling concept. Zn, Cu, Sn, and Pb are the most important in volume, but in the last 15 years, Hydrometal has also developed a few specific recycling treatments for the minor metals including Ge, In, Co, etc. In 2010, Hydrometal commenced the recycling of RE (Rare Earths) from wastes generated by the RE refining industry in Europe and has decided to initiate new recycling projects for the RE recovery from the magnet or glass industries. Two case studies of recycling of materials in our integrated hydrometallurgical facility (Hydrométal) in Belgium are discussed: recycling of cerium from polishing sludges; and recycling of Ni- Co from cement produced in the zinc industry.

India’s most extensive renewable energy expansion program targets 280 GW of solar energy by 2030. Due to the massive generation of photovoltaic waste (expected 34,600 T by 2030), stringent recycling effort to recover metal resources from endof- life PVs is required for resource recovery, circular economy, and subsequent reduction in the environmental impact. The present study investigates the recycling potential of end-of-life silicon solar modules. The feed characterization reveals that most of the values in PV modules are concentrated in the frame (pure Al), Si wafer (72–84% Si, 9–12% Al, and 0.13–0.71% Ag), and electrical connections (Cu wire coated with Sn). The Si and Ag values in the feed were beneficiated using water fluidization, and concentrate with 90% Si and 2% Ag was attained in the underflow concentrate. Ag values were recovered in the form of AgCl by leaching in nitric acid and precipitation. After the purification step, the residue containing 99% Si can be further utilized to fabricate Si wafer and Al-Si alloy. The preliminary cost estimations suggest that the proposed process is economically viable for the recycling of solar panels with the maximum value generated from the AgCl precipitate followed by Al panels and Si wafers.

Along with fast growth of EAF steelmaking, better ways of treating EAF dust have been continuously pursued for better environmental protection and better economic benefits. In this contribution, various ways of collecting EAF dust in EAF off-gas cleaning systems are reviewed, and generation of dust and concentration of zinc in the dust from various collecting devices are examined. Accordingly, recycling of EAF dust through source separation is discussed.

Printed circuited boards contain considerable quantities of valuable metal, while also containing many environmental pollutants making them unsuitable for landfill. In this study the decomposition of common plastics used in printed circuit boards were studied. Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polyethylene (PE) were heated in both C02 and argon atmospheres using a thermo-gravimetric furnace (TG) coupled to a mass spectrometer (MS). Soda ash Na2C03 and baking soda NaHC03 were used as reactants. The degradation temperatures and evolved gases are presented for single plastics and mixtures. Mixed plastics are shown to behave as a sum of the individual plastics. The mass loss temperature is the same in CO2 and argon. However, less residue is formed when heated in CO2.

"This research aims to study the process of incorporation of the metal iron in electric arc furnace dust (EAFD), from a steel mill producing long steel by liquid iron in addition to the changing temperature of 1400 degree Celsius altering experimental conditions such as how to add the EAFD (as received and in the form of briquettes), the percentage of EAFD to be added (10, 20 and 30% of initial weight of sample pig iron) and the time of withdrawal of the sample of pig iron and slag (30 minutes after the addition of EAFD). Previously, the EAFD will be characterized using the following techniques: chemical analysis, particle size analysis, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) microanalysis. After characterization, the eletric arc furnace dust to be added to the bath of liquid iron, will be divided into 2 types: the first order of addition will be in the form ""as received"" from the plant and the second is through the agglomeration of EAFD in the form of briquettes. The achievement of fusion experiments in laboratory scale, will take place in a vertical tubular furnace with temperature control. The fusion experiments to assess the incorporation of the metal iron will use graphite crucibles. A flow of inert gas (argon) will be maintained inside the furnace during the experiments. It is expected that the results obtained at the end of the research allow the evaluation of the iron metal incorporation of eletric arc furnace dust in hot metal bath.IntroductionThe steel industry generates a variety of solid wastes, liquid effluents and gaseous emissions at various stages of processing. It was investigated the effect of the addition of bentonite on the physical propertiesof pellets produced from fines of manganese ores. Cold-bonded pellets were produced. Pellets bearing up to 1 wt% of bentonite were submitted to strength compression resistance tests, fatigue of pellets to impact and maximum height of fall tests. A correlation of resistance of the pellets and time for curing were stablished. The produced pellets match the conditions for raw materials used in electric smelting hrnaces to produce manganese based ferro-alloys.

Since their commercialization in the early 1990s, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have become ubiquitous for powering a myriad of portable electronics. Their usage now extends to the automotive industry and stationary energy storage market. With an average life of 6.2 years and the strong demand, the volume of spent LIBs has increased exponentially, making recycling mandatory. Currently, recycling/ recovery of spent LIBs is limited in comparison to all other types of batteries. The current processes focus mainly on the recovery of the most valuable metals such as cobalt and nickel, leaving lithium and phosphate in a low value end-product. It is necessary that new advanced recycling technologies are developed for the recovery of spent LIBs both from an economic and environmental perspective. In this paper, the current R&D status of LIBs recycling is reviewed with the emphasis placed on hydrometallurgical processing opportunities for Li-ion and Li-solid state batteries.

The minerals industry is under political and economic pressure to reduce its processing wastes and minimize their impact on the environment: Recycling is one of the means by which the minerals Industry can reduce the quantities of effluents and residues that are discharged to the environment. The wise use of available resources is not only an environmental necessity but also an economic benefit as natural mineral resources are depleted and/or become more complex. The purpose of this paper is to review the technical and regulatory issues that will help shape the future of minerals recycling over the next ten years. Research and development to address technical issues will be discussed with emphasis on the Bureau of Mines recycling research program.
