On the basis of in situ study of pillar loading at different sites, an attempt is made in this paper to visualize the development of mining induced stress under varying geo-mining conditions. Field study demonstrated interesting interaction between size of pillar and nature of roof rock mass under the influence of increasing dimension of the excavation. Stiffness of pillars/overburden, extraction ratio and depth cover are observed to be the important parameters for the estimation of mining induced stress over the pillar. These parameters influence, both, the value of ultimate induced stress (vertical) and its range of influence ahead of the face line. Further, it is observed that the change in width/height (w/h) ratio of a pillar has got considerable influence over the nature of mining induced stress over it. Impact of highly dynamic nature of mining induced stress over the natural supports is observed to be the most serious factor for the safety of working under a hard and massive roof rock mass. On the basis of these observations, a conceptual model of interaction between the natural support and overlying strata is discussed in the paper. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Aufgrund ist in situ Studium von Säule Beladung an verschiedenen Stellen, ein Versuch in diesem Papier gemacht, die Entwicklung des Bergbaus vostellen sich, Spannung unter Änderung von Geo Bergbau von Bedingungen hat veranlaßt. Feld Studium hat interessante Wechselwirkung zwischen Größe von Säule und Natur von Dach Felsen Masse unter dem Einfluß von Vermehrung Dimension des excavation vorgeführt. Steifheit des Säulen Overburden, Herausziehung Verhältnisses und Tiefe sind beobachtet bedeckt, die wichtigen Parameter für die Schätzung des Bergbaus zu sein, Spannung über der Säule hat veranlaßt. Diese Parameter beeinflussen, beide, der Wert allerletzter veranlaßter Spannung (senkrecht) und sein Bereich des Einflusses voraus von der Gesicht Linie. Weiter ist, es beobachtet, daß die Änderung in Breite Höhe (W H) Verhältnis einer Säule beträchtlichen Einfluß über der Natur des Bergbaus erhalten hat, Spannung hat darüber veranlaßt. Schlag sehr dynamischer Natur des Bergbaus ist Spannung über den natürlichen Stützen beobachtet hat veranlaßt, der ernsteste Faktor für die Sicherheit des Arbeitens unter einer harten und massiven Dach Felsen Masse zu sein. Aufgrund dieser Beobachtungen, ein begriffliches Modell der Wechselwirkung zwischen der natürlichen Stütze und der überlagernde strata ist im Papier diskutiert. RESUME: En se basant sur dans l'étude de situ de chargement de pilier aux sites différents, une tentative est faite dans ce papier pour envisager le développement de creuse la tension persuadée sous varier de conditions de geo creuse. L'étude de champs a démontré l'interaction intéressante entre la taille de pilier et la nature de masse de rocher de toit sous l'influence d'augmenter de dimension de l'excavation. La raideur de piliers overburden, la proportion d'extraction et la couverture de profondeur est observée pour être les paramètres importants pour le jugement de creuse la tension persuadée par-dessus le pilier. Ces paramètres influencent, les deux, la valeur de tension persuadée ultime (vertical) et sa gamme d'influence en avant de la ligne de face. Assessment of the potential for mining induced subsidence and determination of ultimate design requirements for a mining operation should be based on a number of assessment approaches. Although the rock mechanics engineer has a variety of limit equilibrium and numerical modeling tools available for assessment and prediction of subsidence effects, empirical approaches based on precedent experience provide a powerful tool for calibration/verification of analytical models and prediction of subsidence. Three separate analyses approaches have been applied to the assessment of potential subsidence for a proposed block caving mine in eastern Canada. The investigations have included an assessment of documented historical information from previous block cave mining at the site, deterministic analyses using limit equilibrium approaches to assess kinematically possible failure mechanisms, and three-dimensional numerical modeling techniques. Analyses results have been used and compared with precedent experience and documentation of subsidence behavior from previous mining to optimize the subsidence predictions for the proposed mine.

For all the attention given to mining activities in Central and South America, Mexico, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea, it is sometimes easy to forget the activities taking place in one of North America's most important and largely untapped regions -Alaska. The Alaskan minerals industry employed about 3,406 people during 1995. That is a 23% increase from - - 1994. It also contributed about $719.8 million to the state's economy during 1995, a 10% increase. During the past few years, Alaska has seen significant increases in exploration and mining activity. Fairbanks Mining, an arm of Cyprus Amax, began producing gold during 1996 at its Fort Knox Mine, as did Nevada Goldfields' Nixon Fork gold mine. Kennecott's Greens Creek lead-silver-gold mine also reopened and USMX began operations at its Illinois Creek gold mine. In addition, several impressive exploration projects were under way in Alaska. Placer Dome reported good results at Donlin Creek project in southwest Alaska. Likewise, Newmont Exploration is getting serious about its True North gold project. And Nerox is nearing production at its Jonesville coal project in Alaska's interior. In November, about 400 miners gathered in Anchor- age for the Alaska Miners Convention. Throughout the conference and exhibition, attendees listened to updates on these precious- and base-metal and coal exploration and mining operations. They also learned that the state wants more miners to head north and help develop its natural resources. Alaska is ripe for a smelter The mining industry -Alaska's miners in particular - has a powerful ally in Sen. Frank Murkowski (R-AK). He is the chairman of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee. During his luncheon address, Murkowski said it appears that it is economically feasible to extend the Alaska Railroad to northwest Alaska, taking advantage of the large coal and hard-rock mineral tracts in the Ambler mining district. He also renewed his push for building a major smelter in Alaska to process ore that would come from the Ambler mining district. Murkowski believes that Alaska's economy can be expanded by extending the railroad from Nenana to the Point Lay coal fields to open coal development. Along the way, the railroad would pass through the Ambler district, helping to develop the hard-rock deposits. An outgrowth of this additional mineral development, Murkowski said, could be a new smelter in Alaska. It could use power from the Tyee hydroelectric facility near Wrangell or from the Makushin geothermal project near Unalaska. Either site, he added, offers access to plentiful, relatively low-cost power, at tidewater to facilitate ore deliveries to the Pacific Rim. The Congressional Research Service has determined that there are enough mineral deposits and coal beds to make it possible to finance the extended railroad, he said. The 1,200-km (744- mile) rail extension would cost about $4.2 billion. The North Slope of Alaska contains up to 3.6 Tt (4 trillion st) of coal, Murkowski said, that contains less than 0.25% of sulfur and less than 4% moisture. It aver- ages 12,300 Btu in heat content. "That is a tremendous resource," he said. The Ambler mining district, meanwhile, has at least eight identifiable hard-rock deposits, Murkowski continued. These contain zinc, lead, copper, nickel, chromium, tin, barite, gold and silver. "All eight of these can generate ore concentrates at rates similar to Red Dog's cur- rent 725 ktla (800,000 stpy)" of zinc, he said.

To the extent that remote sensing can provide more sensitive, cost effective and timely monitoring potential, the technology is of interest to the industry. Questions, however, remain about the application and validation of the data and concerning the availability of the technology in the private sector. This paper discusses some of the potential uses, benefits and concerns related to remote sensing. And it discusses efforts to monitor the technology's development.

A NEW LINE of specialists has arisen as a result of the trend toward labor socialization and collectivism in all branches of industry. These men are the ones who will govern the destiny of many companies and the labor policy of our government in coming years. They must be men of integrity and of rather exceptional qualifications; men who can foresee the trend of labor relations with business, and who are willing to sacrifice the immediate fruits of technical training for manual labor and study. They must take their place in industry, not with the idea of following the orthodox line of advancement, but knowing that they must stay at the bottom until they have learned to understand the viewpoints, the work, the advantages and the disadvantages of each classification of labor. They must not be of a radical nature or become easily biased, and they must study. You will say I am looking for a superman and in one sense that is true, but the business man and our government are both in the market even now for this type of man, and with the proper training and background, many of our young technicians can readily enter this field of work.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) academy in Beckley, WV, received enquiries from various segments of the mining industry concerning alcohol and substance abuse in the mining industry. The MSHA Director formed a committee, the Mining Industry Committee on Substance Abuse (MICSA), to deal with these enquiries. The committee met in April 1985 at the mining academy in Beckley. The MICSA committee expanded its membership to represent labor, management, and government agencies affiliated with the mining industry as well as government agencies dealing with alcohol and drug abuse. This expanded 18-member committee met for the first time in July 1985. At that time, two cochairmen were elected, one from labor and one from management. MICSA has spent time on education by sharing information on the issues and by calling in outside experts for advice and consultation. The committee also initiated several projects. These include a resource manual on substance abuse and employee assistance programs. Mine operators and labor unions can use these programs as guides. MICSA is also assembling statistics on substance abuse, particularly as applied to mining. And the committee commissioned an Education film, Substance Abuse, Is It Our Problem? (The results of a survey on drug use, given in Table 1, suggest that substance abuse may indeed be a problem.) The educational film, produced by MSHA, is an introduction to the problem of substance abuse in the mining environment. The film encourages mine operators, labor unions, and miners to analyze their individual circumstances to determine whether a problem exists. The film also offers ways to deal with the problem. And the film invites the mining industry to request additional information from MICSA. There is no single approach to substance abuse that will fit the need of every mining operation. As with any health, safety, or production problem, remedies must be site specific. MICSA's aim is to channel ideas to those who seek to help employees in a mining environment who seek to rid themselves of alcohol and substance abuse. As stated more formally: The Mining Industry Committee on Substance Abuse represents the efforts of labor, management, and government. The mission of the committee is to make the mining industry aware of the problems resulting from alcohol and other drug abuse and to recommend possible methods to remedy the problem. The function of the committee is to assist the industry in developing programs and resources to recognize and provide help for troubled employees, and thus reduce the risk of accidents, while lower absenteeism and increasing productivity.

"This paper reviews the evolving Ontario mining regime for mining industry-Aboriginal engagement and its apparent alignment with court decisions, domestic law, emerging international norms, mining industry rules, and mining firm-Aboriginal agreements, drawing on publicly available commentary from government officials, the private sector, and Indigenous communities. At both the international and country level, the issue of how the mining sector and indigenous populations should engage on issues of mutual interest or concern has emerged as one of central importance and controversy; involving the mining industry, Aboriginal communities, governments, the courts, and other stakeholders. At its heart, stakeholder engagement is an ethical issue, although it manifests itself in international instruments, domestic laws, industry guidance and agreements. At the international level, the concept of ?free, prior and informed consent? (FPIC), while not subject to widespread agreement on the finer details of evolving definitions, seems to be emerging as an increasingly recognized engagement norm. Within Canada, through a series of decisions, the Supreme Court of Canada (SCC) has articulated a fiduciary obligation of the Crown to consult with and accommodate impacted Aboriginal groups on resource management issues. Provincial governments have been variously attempting to adjust their resource management regimes to stay in alignment with SCC and lower court decisions. Mining sector organizations, working with First Nations partners, have developed agreements to work together for mutual benefit. At the individual mine and community level, there have been instances of constructive engagement, as well situations of physical resistance and legal challenges. The purpose of this paper is to examine the potential impact of new rules under the Ontario Mining Act introduced in 2012 and taking full effect in 2013, which amongst other procedural specifications, addresses the issue of mining industry-Aboriginal consultation in exploration and development activities. Leading up to the passage of the regulations, representatives from some junior mineral exploration companies have been highly critical of the new rules. Similarly, there have been a range of responses to the new rules from some in the First Nations community. The paper will review the regulation in terms of its apparent alignment with SCC decisions and the international norm, compare the regulations with existing mining sector organization guidance documents, and it will draw on the stated perspectives and commentaries of First Nations communities, mining firms, governments, nongovernmental organizations, and others. Building on the foregoing, the paper will provide a preliminary analysis of the perspectives and potential impacts of the new regulation on various stakeholders, and on that basis, possible avenues for further consideration will be suggested.

The results of a recent study on the influence of continuous and conventional mining techniques on the size consist and wash- ability characteristics of coal are presented. Eight samples, four each from continuous and conventional mining sections were collected. Each sample was screened in seven size fractions, and each size fraction was totally fractionated at five gravities. The data thus collected was statistically examined for the influence significance of mining techniques, size, and gravity on the quality of the mined product. The paper presents the sample collection method, data gathering and analysis procedures, and major conclusions. The study revealed that there are pronounced differences in the products from the two mining systems and that conventional mining yielded a better product in terms of size-consist, and yield, ash, and sulfur in both the raw and washed products. The results of the study are significant in regard to consideration of resource utilization and conservation, and environmental impacts.

The quantity of data available and the rate at which we access such data are rapidly increasing. Electronic data capture systems, fleet management systems and a host of other technological advancements have created a constant stream of real-time, tactical data. However, are we taking advantage of this data? Are we converting data into useful information to aid in efficient decision-making? Mining operations are struggling with ?information overload?, finding it difficult to extract the benefits from vast stores of data. Without the necessary tools to facilitate a data filtering and information reporting process, most operations revert to old practises such as re-entering data into multiple spreadsheet reports. As a result, the ability to make effective use of data still eludes many mining operations. Some operations have taken audacious steps to rectify this situation. The De Beers Venetia mine in South Africa has implemented an integrated mining information technology solution that transforms their data into practical, usable information allowing staff and management to make decisions that improve efficiencies and reduce costs. In the absence of quantitative justification or ROI, De Beers took a risk in implementing change. Today, they are realising the benefits. This paper will unearth the information technology issues that surfaced during the Venetia implementation, then identify the benefits De Beers has obtained from deploying an integrated mining information technology solution at the Venetia mine.

Effective mine operation demands that the right people have the right information at the right time. Caterpillar's Mining and Earthmoving Technology System (METS) meets this demand by providing "real-time" information transfer between the mine offices and machines equipped with the Caterpillar Computer Aided Earthmoving System (CAES). Transfers of mine plans from the mine planning software to CAES-equipped machines give operators access to current mine plans within minutes of their creation. Additionally, office personnel have access to a current digital terrain model (DTM) of the mine site as it is updated in "real-time" by CAES-equipped machines. METS provides mine personnel in operations, planning, and management the information they need when they need it.

Six industry trends will have significant effect on the way mining equipment is designed and supported in the years ahead: 1. MINING IS MIGRATING TO LESSER DEVELOPED PARTS OF THE WORLD The global recession of the early 1980's drove down commodity prices and intensified cost competition. This caused a fairly dramatic trend in mining away from higher cost operations in developed countries to richer, lower cost deposits in developing countries. Miners operating in lesser developed parts of the world will place higher value on rugged, durable designs that can live in more difficult and sometimes abusive conditions. They need engines and power train systems that are more tolerant of a wide variation in fuel quality and oil specifications. They'll require machines that are simpler to operate, simpler to maintain, simpler to troubleshoot and simpler to repair. And they'll require creative means of support in getting technical information, parts and components to remote operational sites. Mining equipment in the future will be more durable and simple than it is today, and product support will grow in importance as purchasing criterion. 2. THE MINING INDUSTRY IS CONSOLIDATING An intense amount of corporate acquisition and industry consolidation activity is occurring, to the point that today just 50 mining companies account for 55% of the western world non-fuel mineral production. Consolidation will continue, leading in the future to an industry structure weighted heavily toward a few key global mining houses.

"The Australian mining industries approach to life-of-mine planning has improved considerably in recent decades. It now needs to be matched by, and embedded in, mining governance systems that utilise a comprehensive whole-of-mine-life approach within a jurisdictional, industry and regional regime rather than just focusing on specific impacts in isolation. The need for a more comprehensive approach is supported by the many mining legacies, from historic, recent and some operating mine sites around Australia. There are sites that are leaving enduring environmental, community and public health impacts that are yet to be accurately assessed. While a number of these sites in Australia are estimated to be more than 50 000, this is probably an underestimation, with a lack of data and different state-based approaches complicating attempts to quantify mining legacies as a national issue. Qualitative assessments about the extent and nature of mining legacy impacts on nature and communities across Australia are also required if we are to understand and avoid ongoing and future mining legacies.This paper commences with an exploration of mining legacies as an umbrella term for previously mined, abandoned, orphan, derelict or neglected sites. This is followed by a discussion of the current status of mining legacies as an Australia-wide issue, contrasting the Australian response with overseas examples. Common themes from past workshops are explored recognising that mining legacies are a growing public policy issue and identifying key ingredients for a successful response. Supporting this, and based on national data which re-enforces the need for action, is the changing scale and intensity of mining in Australia that, while lowering costs for mine operators, increases the liability that may eventually fall to the state if mine sites are not rehabilitated effectively. Though a national issue, mining is a state and territory responsibility, so the current approach to mining legacies is then examined state-by-state. Given the widespread application and recent changes to bonds and levies in Western Australia (WA) and the Northern Territory (NT) the merits of both are examined with reference to specific case studies. Despite the current division of responsibility and diversity of approaches, however, mining legacies remain a significant and growing problem with a recognised need and repeated call for cooperation and coordination at a national and international level. The East wall of the Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines Fimiston Open Pit (KCGM Superpit) has a history of wall instabilities impacting mining operations; the most significant of which occurred in May 2018, when more than 1 Mt of rock dislodged over six, 30 m high bench stacks and impacted the pit floor. Since 2011 approximately 1.250 Mt of material has fallen from the East wall at Fimiston Pit across three failure events (2011, 2018 and 2020). Each failure has been associated with major structures intersecting the pit walls: the Fiji Fault, the Australia East Secondary Splay Fault and the EWD3 Fault. In each instance the trigger for failure has been transient pore pressure in the pit walls. Northern Star will mine a cut back behind the failure area over a vertical distance of 180 m. Cut back mining will include the extraction of a remaining in situ wedge, which is assessed as kinematically able to fail, and a subvertical failure backscarp in Stage 1. A substantial amount of rill material from the 2018 and 2020 failures will be extracted in Stage 2. This paper presents the methodology in use to mine Stage 1 of the cut back, safely, through this potentially high-risk area, detailing the specific mining methodology employed, the controls put in place and the monitoring required. Day-to-day monitoring will be undertaken using the already installed slope stability radar and will feed into a daily assessment of activities which may be undertaken in the cut back area. Initial activities will focus on eliminating the potentially unstable wedge and vertical backscarp with use of innovative drill and blast techniques/products and the extensive use of remote capable equipment to limit personnel exposure.

One of the requirements for the successful waging of war is an unlimited supply of iron ore. In the spring of 1941 the demand for iron ore was expected to exceed the supply. This was particularly so in the case of high-grade lump iron ore, essential to the open-hearth process of making steel. The bulk of Canada's iron ore was imported from the United States. At this time, Canada was making every effort to conserve United States funds for more vital purchases. For these reasons, the development of Canadian iron ore resources became of prime importance. Several companies undertook investigations and one of these examined the old Josephine deposit. Location The Josephine property is in the district of Algoma, in the Michipicoten area of the Sault Ste. Marie mining division of Ontario. It is 120 miles north of Sault Ste. Marie and 20 rail-miles east of Michipicoten harbour, on lake Superior (see Figure 1). Transportation in the area is furnished by the Algoma Central and Hudson Bay railway. The Michipicoten branch of this line passes within a mile of the Josephine mine. Michipicoten harbour provides a port through which iron ore is currently shipped. Power in the area is supplied by the Great Lakes Power Company, with generating plants on Michipicoten river, on Montreal river, and on St. Mary's river at Sault Ste. Marie. A series of transmission lines cover the district and one of these is connected to the Josephine mine by a 3 ½-mile branch line. History The Josephine property was staked by Alois Goetz in 1899. Before the claims could be recorded, the township in which they are located was given to the Algoma Central & Hudson Bay railway as part of a land grant. As a result, the ownership remained in dispute until August 24th, 1906, when a settlement was arbitrated by the Honourable Frank Cochrane. His ruling is interesting and is quoted in part.

THE Lake Shore mine has been developed by two vertical shafts, with level intervals at 200 feet to the 2200 level and at 125 feet below this horizon. A main cross-cut joins the two shafts on all levels to the bottom of No. 3 shaft, and opening into these cross-cuts are the ore passes and sand passes, which are completed from surface To the 4450 level. In the west part of the mine, additional connections have been made between No. 1 and No. 2 veins, through which the major part of the ore from No. 2 vein west is routed to drifts in No. 1 vein. With the lesser amount of stoping on No. 1 vein, this arrangement permits better haulage to be maintained. The ore passes are driven at 50 degrees from the ends of short cross-cuts off the main ones and are broken through to the levels above at the mouths of the short cross-cuts, to allow for dumping on each level. The passes are controlled at each level by ball-and-chain gates and deliver to crushers and thence to loading pockets, shown in Figure 1. That system is quite flexible in that it is possible to by-pass the crushers at any station and load from either shaft at a number of different pockets. The sand passes are driven from the main cross-cuts at the same inclination as, and parallel to, the ore passes. Each is equipped with a chute and dump hole, so that waste or sand fill may be loaded or dumped at each level. A transfer door, hinged on the bottom, is installed opposite the chute for by-passing fill from one level to the next, and in the closed position protects the opening at the top of the pass. The dump hole situated beside the transfer door is protected by a grizzly with 10-inch spaces. Waste rock may be withdrawn from the system through No. 3 shaft loading pocket at the 2950 level to a waste bin on surface. Levels are developed by drifts in No. 1 and No. 2 veins for their entire lengths. Subsidiary breaks are followed at a later date, when full information has been obtained by exploration, and a considerable amount of development by sub-drifts is carried out in the upper part of the mine, particularly in more or less erratic sections of No. 1 vein.

Introduction Most of the Flin Flon ore-body, like many others in northern Canada, was covered by water. The original discovery was made where the ore-body outcropped on a strip of land jutting out into Flin Flon lake. The outcrop could be traced for a distance of 600 feet across the strip of land, but disappeared under the lake on both sides of the peninsula. Following the discovery or location of the property, in 1915, and subsequent to its examination by the H.P. Whitney interests in 1925, an extensive diamond-drilling programme was completed, which proved the existence of an ore-body at least 2,600 feet long and 900 feet deep. In plan, the central part of the ore-body at surface attains an overall width of about 450 feet; including waste horses, and gradually becoming narrower to the south. To the north, it stretches out as a much narrower tongue. The main body is a solid sulphide ore containing gold, silver, copper, and zinc. Adjacent to, and on the footwall side of, the solid sulphide ore-body, there are considerable widths of talcy disseminated copper ore, particularly in the upper 300 feet of the deposit, where the maximum widths occur. The ore-body occurs in a greenstone area, the rock being quite hard on the hanging-wall side, with the footwall schisted, talcy, and much softer. The greater part of the ore-body was overlain by 12 to 15 feet of water and from 15 to 90 feet of mud and clay, this material requiring eventual removal, regardless of the system of mining adopted. The total of mud and clay overburden was estimated at 1,000,000 tons. After considerable study, it was decided to mine the upper 300 feet of the ore-body by open-pit methods; the balance of the ore to be recovered by underground mining . The present paper gives an account of the methods adopted in both operations, and of the problems encountered.

FORM of ore bodies, strength of wall rock, and quantity of water that must be handled differ so greatly in the various districts in which the Corporation operates that a variety of mining methods have to be employed. All are underground, however, with the exception of glory holes at Cerro de Pasco from which siliceous silver pacos ore is obtained. In general, the ors is in many relatively small bodies unsuitable for hulk mining, such as caving or top slicing. The strength of the rock and ore rarely permit open stopes, though shrinkage is successfully used on various veins with strong walls, particularly in, Casapalca. Horizontal cut and-fill and square-set stoping with careful filling are the principal methods employed, with the necessarily higher cost for supplies and labor offset as much as possible by care in the avoidance of dilution. The mines at both Morococha and Casapalca are notoriously wet, and even at Cerro de Pasco the quantity of water was enough to retard deep development until the perfection of electric pumps. In Morococha particularly, the extension of successive levels, first from adits of moderate length, then from shafts and heavy pumping installations on the 750 and 1000 levels, and finally by the 30,564-ft. Kingsmill tunnel, was one of the most difficult and long continued fights against water and resulting heavy ground that is recorded in mining history.
