Transport Canada (Federal Government) constructed the Halifax International Airport (HIA) near Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada in the late-1950s. Site location criteria were primarily; direct access to the city and a raised flat topography. Unfortunately, the site chosen was located on shallow Meguma group pyritic slate bedrock. In 1982, during the construction of an airport taxiway, it became very apparent that acidic run-off from excavated bedrock at the site was having a negative impact on adjacent aquatic habitat. The ensuing 20 years involved many efforts to rectify the acidic drainage problem with mixed results. Some of the techniques which have been implemented at HIA to address the acid rock drainage (ARD) issue include: dry covers, wet covers, wetlands, electrochemical treatment, open limestone channels, limestone gravel polishing beds, agricultural limestone application, and two hydrated lime [Ca(OH)2] addition treatment plants, the first producing low density sludge and the new one that creates high-density sludge. Based on over 20 years of water quality monitoring data it is apparent that only certain acid drainage mitigation methods have been effective at HIA. In 2000 when the Halifax International Airport Authority (the Authority) took control of the operation and management of the airport, including the ARD issue, it was decided to construct a modern, highdensity sludge, hydrated lime treatment system. This new $CAN 7 million system is now in operation and is achieving compliance with water quality guidelines. Due to high operating cost, a review of methods to optimise the system is being carried out. The HIA ARD problem, though minor by comparison to most mine sites, has provided unique challenges and may provide valuable insights into this urgent environmental and financial issue.

BHP Billiton Diamonds Inc (BHPB) has been mining kimberlite from several pipes at the Ekati Diamond MineTM located 300 km north of Yellowknife since 1997. Processing of kimberlite produces coarse kimberlite rejects (CKR, 0.5 to 8 mm) and fine tailings (less than 0.5 mm). The CKR are trucked to the Coarse Kimberlite Reject Storage Area (CKRSA) located within the drainage area of the tailings impoundment (Long Lake Containment Facility û LLCF). The coarse rejects are wet when dumped and are expected to freeze as a result of annual average site temperatures of about -10¦C. Seasonal thawing occurs along the exposed edges of the pile. Monitoring of the CKR indicates they have consistently low sulfur concentrations (0.4 per cent) accompanied by high acid neutralisation potentials (78 to 337 kg CaCO3/t). Carbonate concentrations vary from 0.9 per cent to 3.4 per cent. The CKR are therefore not potentially acid generating based on conventional laboratory testing. Monitoring of stagnant pools on the tundra downgradient of the CKRSA has shown that water originating from the pile resembles acid rock drainage (ARD). Water pHs can be less than 4, and sulfate concentrations are typically in the thousands of milligrams per litre. Conventional flowing toe seeps are pH neutral but also have elevated sulfate concentrations. Investigations conducted in the summer of 2002 revealed no evidence of in situ acid generation. Pore water chemistry is probably controlled by oxidation of fine-grained pyrite, neutralisation of acidity by calcium and magnesium carbonates and silicates, and freeze concentration of pore water. The acidity observed in tundra pools downgradient of the CKRSA appears to be a result of leaching and mobilisation of iron under reducing conditions at the CKR-soil contact. Downstream of the CKRSA, reduced iron oxidises and is hydrolysed on contact with the atmosphere causing pH depression. BHPB is applying the findings of this study by constructing facilities containing kimberlite on granite pads. These in turn are placed on frozen ground so that the foundations remain frozen and limits contact of wastes with the acidic soils.

The physico-chemical interaction between minerals such as olivine, chromite and serpentine and the ions most commonly present in solution, like Ca and Mg and flotation reagents such as EDTA and oleic acid was investigated. The study was conducted via release tests, electrophoretic measurements and microflotation of selected minerals coming from the Kukes deposit (Albania). The results were confirmed by means of beneficiation tests on various types of ores, from the Kukes (Kalimash), from Bulquiza area and from the Rizo deposit (Greece). It has been demonstrated that when Na-K Oleate is used as collector chromite, olivine and serpentine can be separated at pH = 2.5 and/or 5.5 employing EDTA (EthyleneDiamineTetraAcetate) on previously deslimed material. This approach ensures flotation concentrates with a Cr2O3 content about 50%, at a recovery in excess of 65%.

"Augered-cast-in-place (ACIP) pile installation technology has matured extensively since the first auger, pressure grouted pile was patented in 1959. The current technology allows for successful pile installation across a variety of stratigraphies to meet various project load resistance requirements. This paper presents an overview of current ACIP techniques by comparing a number of case histories in a variety of geologic settings from Eastern Pennsylvania, New York City and New Jersey to demonstrate ACIP pile constructability in soft soils as well as the penetration, and resulting significant loads resisted, of ACIP piles in dense soils and intermediate geo-materials. Geologic settings that will be discussed include the Piedmont and Coastal Plain geologic provinces as well as glacial till deposits. Keywords: Deep Foundations, Piles, Augercast, Augered-cast-in-place, Auger pressure grouted, ACIP, APGINTRODUCTIONThe author, along with two colleagues, published an article in Deep Foundations magazine (NeSmith et al, 2013) which described a number of the advances in equipment, techniques, installation monitoring and post-construction testing that have expanded the geologies in which Augered Cast-in-place (ACIP) piles are installed as well as increasing their efficiency in some traditional ACIP pile geologies. The author uses the term efficiency to refer to the load resisted by a pile of a certain diameter and the increased efficiency noted refers to increased allowable loads over those traditionally resisted by piles of certain diameter (or a reduction in pile diameter from that which was traditionally used to support a certain design load). The performance and installation of ACIP piles in a variety of geologies in the Northeastern U.S. are discussed herein.PIEDMONT PHYSIGRAPHIC PROVINCEThe Piedmont physiographic province stretches from Alabama to the east through Georgia and up the east coast, just west of the Coastal Plain to Pennsylvania and New York (Brown, 2002). It generally consists of soils weathered in place from the underlying bedrock, which is typically a combination of granite, schist and gneiss depending on the location within the province. The author’s experience in the Northeastern US has been on sites where alluvial or coastal plain soils overly the residual soils and partially weathered or intact rock of the Piedmont. The example presented here, from a site on Walnut St in Philadelphia PA, is representative of these projects."

Owing to the high ore grades in the African Copperbelt and variable acid consumption, agitated leaching is common practice and is used more widely in Africa than in other regions. Two common challenges for agitated leach–solvent extraction circuits are higher presence of colloidal silica in the pregnant leach solution and elevated levels of total suspended solids. Both can negatively affect the physical and metallurgical performance of the solvent-extraction circuit, and lead to higher processing costs or reduced copper production. Operating in organic continuity is preferred to address such challenges, but is not always possible: additional treatment options may be advantageous. For this reason, Solvay recently introduced ACORGA® CR60LT, a new chemical additive to address these concerns. Continuous addition to the pregnant leach solution improves physical performance without negatively affecting Cu transfer or cathode quality. The Bureau of Mines is investigating the use of geophysical methods to determine rock mass characteristics, particularly rock quality, lithology, and fracture parameters that are important for determining the feasibility of in situ leaching operations. As part of this research, two Bureau-developed crosshole geophysical systems are described that can be used for site investigation and rock mass characterization. Results are given for performance tests at field sites in Arizona and Texas and for correlations between the crosshole seismic data with fracture frequency, rock quality, and lithologic variation. Recommendations are made for using elastic waveform propagation characteristics and dynamic elastic properties for improving rock mass characterization in the geomechanical assessment of in situ leaching deposits.

"Shale gas and oil production has grown rapidly in recent years, and consequently there are increasing demands to understand the mechanical and microseismic properties of shale. Acoustic emission (AE) monitoring provides useful information on the fracture mechanisms of shale rocks, and provides a basis for interpreting field seismic observations. While there have been attempts for microseismic monitoring of conventional hydrocarbon reservoirs, shale presents a large number of issues that require further investigation. For this purpose, experiments were conducted to understand the characteristics of the AE waveforms propagated through Opalinus shale rock in the time and frequency domains. Frequency range, arrival time, first arrival amplitude and other parameters such as counts, duration and energy of the waves generated from artificial and natural sources in the shale specimens were detected and compared with AE characteristics of granite, a brittle rock that has been extensively investigated. The experimental tests showed that there are some important factors that influence the analyses and interpretations of seismic surveys and microseismic monitoring of shale compared to granite. One of these factors is the anisotropic behavior of shale that causes the wave to propagate with different velocities in different directions. Also bedding planes and micro-discontinuities in the shale cause attenuation of the waves. Thus the AE waveforms that arrive at the sensor are a distorted and attenuated versions of the source waveform.INTRODUCTIONMonitoring microseismic activity from hydraulic fracturing of shale provides vital information for mapping injection paths and fluid migration in order to check the effectiveness of the hydraulic fracture stimulation. Analysis of microseismic source locations can be used to identify fracture networks induced or mobilized during the hydraulic fracturing operation (Rotherd and Shapiro, 2003). On the other hand, by monitoring and assessing detected signals from hydraulic fracturing one can evaluate the induced seismic impact of the stimulation operation.While there have been attempts to monitor microseismic events in conventional hydrocarbon reservoirs, shale presents a large number of issues that require further investigation. For this purpose, experiments were conducted on Opalinus shale to understand its acoustic emission (AE) characteristics in the time and frequency domains."

The role of horizontal stress, its orientation and magnitude, in defining the behaviour of strata in underground coal mines has been well established. Poor panel layouts have led to gate end stress concentrations, roof falls and lost production. The ability to define the horizontal stress regime over a mine site has historically been limited to point measurements, in part due to technology and cost. Recent advances in the application of geophysical tools, notably the acoustic scanner (borehole televiewer) have resulted in a new technique to conduct stress measurements. By quantifying the nature of borehole breakout and the mechanical properties of rocks in which they occur, this technique provides the ability to: obtain a vastly greater number of measurements, both at different depths and spatial distribution, than other techniques such as overcoring or hydraulic fracturing readily obtain depth versus stress relationships define geotechnical domains on the basis of stress direction and in-situ stress magnitude for mine planning purposes This paper presents an overview of the technique and presents case histories in its application at a mine site in the Sydney Basin, Australia.

"IntroductionIn order to predict the accepted industrial practice for the year 2000, it may be helpful to first consider the rate of development of scientific knowledge. If the speed with which man can travel on commercial vehicles is taken as a criterion for determining the rate of progression, then it can be seen from Figure 1 that advancement in our present century is very rapid. Likewise, if computer technology is used as a criterion for the measurement of scientific advancement, it becomes evident that technological evolution can be highly exponential. These two examples are sufficient to demonstrate that engineers and managers cannot afford to regard scientific development as being linear with respect to time if they are to avoid underestimating the needs of society.Within this framework of overall development, the time required for individual ideas to progress from inception to regular application has decreased considerably. For example, X-rays first discovered by Roentgen in the 1890's and now used widely in medicine and engineering, required a developmental period of some eighty years. The motorcar evolved from early beginnings at the turn of the century to a position of great social impact in sixty years. Rectifier materials used in high frequency radar to the present explosion in communications, required forty years. As illustrated in Figure 2, the period is shortening rapidly.The use of sound waves appears to be following a similar path. There is now a considerable body of knowledge concerning their behaviour and exceptional advances have been made. In medicine and engineering the sonic approach to examination is well established, and acoustic testing forms the basis of several diagnostic and quality control applications. With respect to metals engineering, ultrasonic testing has contributed to the understanding of the relationship between the size and number of internal defects and the probability of premature failure. This has allowed the designer to incorporate appropriate safety factors in his designs; but more importantly, the realization of the deleterious effect of inclusions on the performance of the final product has resulted in a continuous pressure on the material suppliers to reduce the number of defects in their products.It is not only the designer who is demanding defect free material but also the fabricator, as material breakdown during manufacture can be prohibitively expensive. Examples of this can be found in both the aluminum and steel industries where ultra clean sheet is required to ensure that rejections are minimized during beverage can manufacture and other deep drawing operations."

The experiences of exploration crews with mineral land acquisition could be graphed to show a correlation with the natural law that everything tends to become more so. A single step, such as that of taking a series of deep soil samples, is sometimes delayed until some sense can be made from floating unpatented claims which are obscure in orientation as well as position-placer claims, overlapping lode claims, location posts with empty Prince Albert cans and claims with no apparent assessment work for ten years. Add to this some patented claims without monuments, a state or federal withdrawal area which may or may not invalidate preexisting claims, a loosely defined tunnel site, and some ranchers who understandably resent the separation of surface rights from mineral rights.

"Acrylamide chemical grout (C3H2NO) has been successfully used for over 50 years to control groundwater and stop infiltration. This paper will address three unique projects involving the control of groundwater with each study providing special circumstances and geological conditions: encapsulation of radioactive hazardous waste in the United States, a tailings dam for a large copper/gold mine in Argentina and 27 miles of leaking subway in Canada. Several reactive metal purification processes using molten salts generate effluent from which significant quantities of metal can be recovered prior to discardinglrecycling the salt. A Salt-scrub [SS] process has been applied where the reactive metals are recovered as a metal-gallium alloy by calciothermic reduction of the metal compounds. The SS alloy compositions were produced by mixing, pressing and sintering the metal-powders. Measurement of metal recovery has been studied for cerium, silver, tin and lead. The process has been optimized for variables such as the metal quantity per kg of effluent salt, amount of excess calcium over stoichiometry, stirring rate and time and holding time at reduction temperature. Over ninety-seven percent metal recovery has been obtained under optimized conditions. The development of an alloy for efficient Salt Scrub processing reduces a major contaminated waste disposal problem as well as recovering the valuable reactive metal. Surrogate metals have been used in this work to study the behavior of plutonium.

Activated bleaching clays, so called because of their ability to remove color bodies from bleach fats and oils, are produced from clays of bentonitic origin. Activation is achieved by subjecting these clays to physical or chemical alteration to increase selective sorption capacities (1) . The future of activated bleaching clays depends upon the ability of producers to recognize the new areas of applications which are arising, and their skill in developing sophisticated active clays to meet new and stringent requirements. The major portion of activated bentonites are produced for decolorization of oils. New techniques of activation will improve these clays for broader spectrum use. General properties expected to result from present activation methods are: 1. Modification of hydrophobic-hydrophilic properties and increased available surface area in non-aqueous systems, thereby improving sorption capacity and ability to remove color bodies from oils. The following additional properties will be expected from future activated clays: 2. High purity of the active clay with interfering impurities totally removed. 3. "The operation of an activated charcoal system has five separate unit operations. These unit operations have common points for CIP, CIL and CIS system, which vary widely in application.The unit operations are:a. Absorptionb. Desorption (Stripping)c. Acid Washingd. Reactivatione. These parameters undergo almost immediate change due to site specific ore requirements, throughput changes, operator requirements or reagent availability.Activated charcoal is sometimes viewed as simple, uncomplicated reagent that requires not optimization. To some extent, this statement is true, but under most circumstances, if the time necessary to optimize the use of activated charcoal is available, the effort is rewarded with significant savings. CPL-Carbon Link has embarked upon a program of supplying technical support with its activated charcoal. Several operations in the United States have undertaken to have CPL-Carbon Link do an operational survey to determine if potential savings are possible. The separation of albites from quartz by flotation applying the conventional HF-methods is no longer acceptable from an environmental and health point of view. Therefore, the search for a new reagent scheme without using HF depressor for separation of albite from quartz is under consideration. The flotation behaviour of ore mineral components depends on the produced hydrophobic or hydrophilic surface coverage (chemical functionalization). Currently we have excellent possibility of monitoring surface composition and structure at molecular and atomic levels at surfaces of natural minerals contacted with aqueous solutions of collectors, activators, depressants which is vitally important for the understanding of the surface chemistry that govern selective and efficient flotation. Detailed surface characterization of minerals before and after their exposition to different solution conditions was performed by the most modern spectroscopic techniques such as developed by us the infrared external reflection technique combined with spectral simulation and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). It is possible to monitor surface reactions which facilitate the separation process and those which bring disadvantage to selective flotation. At first we found that a small amount of ?mineral impurity? presented in natural ore could play important role in selective hydrophobization process. It was found that the pH of solution (parameter possible to control) and natural mineral impurities present in mineral samples (parameter related to ore origin) play a very important role in the separation process. Another important parameter is interaction between minerals, quartz and albite, present in aqueous solution. The limitation of flotation separation resulting from chemistry will be discussed. Moreover, the most promising scheme for separation of albites from quartz will be examined.

In this work, a new flotation strategy was proposed for the flotation of rutile. In this strategy, rutile was activated by Pb(NO3)2 and then floated with amyl xanthate (AX) as a collector at pH 8. Pb(OH)+ was the dominant lead species in the solution at pH 8 and is believed to be the major species reacting with the rutile surface. Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) study revealed that the lead activation products were well distributed on the rutile surface, and AX− could further bind with the Pb atom on the Pb-activated rutile surface. In this regard, the Pb-activated rutile could be floated by AX. Furthermore, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis indicated that Pb(OH)2 was generated on the Pb-activated rutile surface. The electron transfer during the adsorption of the AX− on the Pb-activated rutile surface was also investigated by XPS analysis.

This paper presents results of an experimental study performed on the role of calcium sulfate present in flotation water on sphalerite flotation in the Pb/Cu circuit (non Cu-activated sphalerite) and in the Zn circuit (Cu-activated sphalerite). In the Pb/Cu circuit calcium ions adsorb on the negatively-charged sphalerite favoring xanthate adsorption and therefore making sphalerite floatable; experimental measurements show sphalerite contact angle increases with calcium concentration while xanthate adsorption onto sphalerite increases with the increase of pH and calcium concentration. Gypsum (CaSO4·2H2O) eventually present due to calcium sulfate precipitation is not detrimental to flotation at this stage since it is negatively charged at pH 9 and therefore, does not adhere onto the surface of negatively-charged sphalerite. In the zinc circuit, Cu-activated sphalerite decreases its negative charge (or even becomes positively charged) and develops some hydrophobicity due to the polysulfide produced by Cu-activation. At this stage calcium ions do not interact with the mineral surface and therefore do not favor xanthate adsorption; nevertheless, precipitated gypsum particles do adhere onto the mineral surface, greatly affecting its floatability (e.g., contact angle). Addition of sodium carbonate to dissolve gypsum and to precipitate calcium as calcium carbonate, which disperses in the bulk of the suspension, effectively restores mineral hydrophobicity. SEM observations coupled with EDS analysis clearly illustrate and support the above sequence of events.

Dust, or airborne particulate matter, from metal smelting can be either mechanically or thermally generated and it negatively affects the indoor air quality as well as the fugitive emissions from the plant. The thermally generated dust is often referred to as fume and it is typically generated whenever liquid metal comes into contact with air. For practical reasons, such as vehicle access, etc. it is often difficult to collect 100% of the fume. It is therefore highly desirable to develop processes and optimize operational procedures so that fuming can be kept to a minimum. In this series of experiments, the mechanism of active oxidation and fume formation from liquid silicomanganese under an impinging air jet in the temperature range 1400-1600°C has been explored. Characteristic properties of the fume have been established; particle diameter, shape, size distribution, and elemental composition are reported. The oxidation process is described in terms of vaporization, oxidation and agglomeration. In the boundary layer, two competing mechanisms seem to be operative in parallel: a direct oxidation of Mn vapor, and a two-step oxidation of silicon. The thermodynamic and kinetic conditions governing the two mechanisms are discussed.

ABSTRACT The Bruce Museum, located in Greenwich, Connecticut, is home to an extensive display of art and natural history exhibitions. A large addition was designed to be constructed adjacent to the museum requiring new spread footings to be installed up to 16.5 feet below the existing foundations. The soil conditions at the site consist of highly variable sand and gravel overlying weathered rock and sound bedrock. The Contract Documents called for traditional foundation underpinning. Traditional underpinning techniques, however, presented two major challenges on this Project; (1) deep underpinning pits would be required involving multiple levels and staging with tieback support and (2) the highly variable soil and bedrock composition and elevations presented uncertainty in the design and construction of the pits. In lieu of traditional underpinning, Geosciences Testing and Research, Inc. (GTR) proposed an “active” soil nail underpinning system. A major reason that the soil nail underpinning option was feasible, related to the fact that the soil nails and facing could be installed slightly in front of the existing footings rather than directly underneath the existing footings. The soil nail wall design involved one to four rows of soil nails with nail positions and wall depth able to be adjusted “on the fly” as excavation progressed depending on the field conditions encountered. To create the “active system,” the soil nails were pre-loaded to mitigate wall deformations that would be associated with a standard passive soil nail wall design. To evaluate the performance of the active soil nail wall and confirm design assumptions, an extensive automated monitoring, on-site testing and inspection program was proposed and executed by GTR to monitor deformations of the wall and the museum in real-time, evaluate and confirm bedrock and soil bond stresses and ensure that each soil nail was pre-loaded and locked off. Careful analysis, planning, and use of the observational method illustrates the importance of collaboration between design and construction personnel and applying engineering judgement throughout construction. The use of the observational method includes the potential for modifying design based on conditions observed. This paper presents a unique case study of the “active” soil nail underpinning system to support and protect sensitive structures, close collaboration between design and construction facilitated by real-time deformation monitoring, and its successful application as a safe and cost-effective alternative to traditional underpinning.
