The geostatistical technique of conditional simulation is applied to measure the uncertainty in factor of safety predictions for soil slopes where there is incomplete knowledge of the spatial distribution of soil properties. A case study considers a natural clay slope in Canada. The sequential indicator simulation technique is used as a means for generating a series of spatial maps of soil properties for this site. These maps approximate random draws from the conditional probability density function that characterizes existing uncertainty in the spatial distribution. Factor of safety determinations are then made for each simulated map using the simplified-Janbu approach, where the computations are performed with a new computer program that can operate on irregular spatial profiles of soil properties specified on a discrete grid. A unique capability of this approach is the ability to generate the distribution of factor of safety conditional to the type, position, and value of existing site characterization measurements. This capability should reduce uncertainty in FS predictions.

Concentradora "Dana Aida" (100 t/d capacity) was built in 1971-1972 to treat dumps and ores containing mixed oxide-sulfide copper-gold-silver minerals from two veins. The veins, Don Felipe and aria are about 150 m apart, but are distinctly different mineralogically. The deposit is near San Juan de Guadalupe, Durango. Mexico. All new process equipment was manufactured locally, in or near Torreon, Coahuila. Sampling, ore testing, flowsheet design, plant design, drawings purchasing, financing, etc. was planned and directed by two engineers. Construction was executed by local miners and common labor (largely agricultural). The paper presents detailed costs for equipment and construction. The subsequent breaking-in operation is discussed.

"Dewatering of nickel concentrate at the INCO Thompson integrated mine-metallurgical site takes place within the smelter plant. The eight original 60 foot diameter cable torque thickeners of which four were operational and eight Dorrco internal drum filters have been replaced with a single Outokumpu high rate thickener and a single Lasta pressure filter. The modernization has resulted in a filter cake which has a more stable and lower moisture content. Control of the entire dewatering process has been improved and costs have been reduced.Typical filter cake produced from the Dorrco filters during processing of high tonnages of Birchtree mine ore was ~20% moisture vs. ~13% moisture for concentrate produced from the Thompson mine ore. The high moistures were correlated with the amount of fine magnesium silicate gangue in the concentrate. As Birchtree ore processing rates have increased, this filter cake moisture became unacceptable because of material handling problems and the impact on furnace metallurgy. The Dorrco filters were replaced with the Lasta filter in 2003 that has consistently produced filter cake at ~11% moisture.This paper summarizes the piloting, design, installation and commissioning of the modernized dewatering circuit.INTRODUCTIONThe Thompson integrated nickel processing facility was built in 1958 and originally consisted of a mine-mill-smelter and, soon after, a refinery.Nickel concentrate is pumped from the mill as a dilute slurry directly to the smelter facility ~200 meters along an unheated pipe trestle. Noranda's Altonorte custom smelter, located in the 2nd region of Chile, 20 kilometres southeast of the city of Antofagasta, started operations in 1993. Presently, 1150 tonnes per day of new feed are smelted with an 85% sulphur capture. An oxy-fuel reverberatory furnace produces a 48%-55% copper matte that is treated in 13 ft. x 36 ft. (3..96m x 10.97m) Peirce-Smith converters (two hot and one blowing). Up to thirty percent of the new concentrate is smelted via dry concentrate injection into the converters. This paper reviews the development of the concentrate drying and injection system, and oxygen enrichment at Altonorte from start-up in 1995 to the present time. The relationship between oxygen enrichment and concentrate injection is reviewed from a theoretical and practical standpoint. Concentrate injection has improved the smelter's productivity and added flexibility to the operations. Due to the relatively high matte grades and the subsequent short converting times, maintaining consistent operations was difficult at times and the smelter has gone through a learning curve. Plant operating results and experiences are presented on the impact of concentrate injection in relation to: feed treatment, blowing times, revert generation, slag quality and refractory wear.

In March 2003, Phelps Dodge started up an innovative pressure leach facility for processing copper concentrates at the Bagdad mine in Arizona. This paper describes the development of the concentrate leaching plant at Bagdad and the operational results from start up to present. Optimization efforts and an approach to mineralogical modeling of the concentrate to calculate oxygen utilization are also presented.

"The Jaguar concentrator, 60 km north of Leonora, Western Australia (WA), consists of a standard closed circuit semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) and ball mill producing a float feed of approximately 60 micron at 70 t/h. Following comminution, separate copper and zinc concentrates are produced by differential flotation. These concentrates are subsequently dewatered by thickening and then filtration.Separate audits of the Jaguar Operation’s copper and zinc concentrate thickeners were conducted to evaluate their performance, following occasions where site personnel had identified unnecessary loss of copper and zinc concentrate to the thickener overflow. The feedwells were identified as the source of the observed problems due to the following issues with their design/duty:lack of retention time in the feedwell as current design is completely opennot conducive to effective mixing required for efficient flocculationdiameter of the zinc concentrate thickener feedwell was undersize for its duty.To improve the performance of the thickeners, it is planned to replace both concentrate thickener feedwells with a high rate design for their respective duties in February 2016. The audits also identified that the feed system requires modifications with particular importance placed on minimising air entrainment of slurry into the thickener feedwell. Minimisation of air entrainment is hoped to be achieved by providing constant head pressure through installation of weir arrangements in the feedboxes and redirecting each feed pipe so that it feeds tangentially into the feedwell. In addition, improvements to the control philosophy of both thickeners will be made with the installation of an ultrasonic bed level probe and bed mass sensor, in order to make real-time adjustments to the underflow pump speed to maintain steady state operation.Following the feedwell replacement and modifications to both thickeners it is expected that losses of recovered copper and zinc will decrease to undetectable levels. Rare earth elements (REEs) have many critical uses in advanced technology and the lack of a reliable domestic supply has been identified by the US DOE as a vulnerability to US economic security. Our research focuses on developing an economical process for extracting REEs from coal fly ash and power plant wastewater sludge by coupling a hydrothermal extraction process with the engineering of a ligand-associated media for concentrating REEs from the extraction liquid. Ash samples have been collected from two Detroit-area Power plants that burn 100% low sulfur coal (Trenton Channel) or fuel blends of 75% low sulfur coal and 25% high sulfur coal or 70% low sulfur coal, 15% high sulfur coal, and 15% petcoek (Monroe Power Plant). Ash samples are then subjected to hydrothermal conditions from 100-350 °C for 1-24 h at Los Alamos National Laboratory and leachate concentrations are measured by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS) and compared to hydrofluoric acid digestion results. Experiments designed to aid in ligand selection and loading optimization show that di-(2-ethylhexyl)methanediphosphonic acid (H2DEH or DIPEX™) can be successfully loaded to a commercially available swellable organically modified silica (SOMS) media. Preliminary results show that DIPEX-associated SOMS surface loading can exceed 4x on a mass/mass basis and in simplified sorption experiments with Nd solutions (~pH 2), the DIPEX-SOMS media can sorb >90 mg Nd per g of media. Recovery of the sorbed Nd with low pH solutions has had low efficiency with the high (4 g DIPEX/ g dry media); however, near complete recovery was achieved with lower surface loadings (0.05 g DIPEX/ g dry media). Column experiments are being conducted to evaluate the optimal ligand/media ratio for repeated use. Completive sorption with Fe and other major cations are also being evaluated.

During the middle 1880's, shortly after the discovery of silver-lead ores in the Coeur d'Alene district of northern Idaho, it became apparent that concentration of the ores would be necessary to obtain a profitable product. Too much siliceous material was present for direct smelting, and the majority of the ores found at depth were too low in metallic content for economic smelting processes at the time. As the ores occurred in quartzite shear zones with siderite and quartz gangue, a large quantity of waste material was present in all the mines. As the galena was not finely disseminated, this made possible relatively good extraction of the argentiferous galena by coarse concentration. The first concentrators consisted mainly of coarse crushing, screening and jigging, principally by Harz jigs, the slimes being treated on buddles. Later Wilfley tables took the place of sand jigs and vanners superseded the buddles. Because of the marketing conditions, no attempt was made until 1900 to effect a recovery on the zinc minerals present, which were found associated in varying amounts with the galena. All through this period, the greater part of the production was obtained from mines containing ore assaying high in lead and low in zinc. Parts of some ore bodies would be reversed in this respect, so that ores high in zinc were left intact. During the decade after 1910, several important mines, The Success and The Interstate Callahan, containing ores high in zinc, were put into operation and were a material aid in the needed zinc production during World War I. Gravity concentration by jigs and tables was used during this period, with bulk flotation increasing in popularity for the treatment of the fine material that had already been treated by ordinary slime concentrating machinery. No extra fine grinding for flotation concentration was thought profitable at the time. Tailings Discharged into Streams From the start of mining and milling operations in this district until 1904, no attempt was made by the various mills in the upper district to impound or stack their tailings. They discharged them directly into the adjacent creeks or streams, to be carried away by high water. The Bunker Hill and Sullivan and the Last Chance mines, both in the relatively flat valley of the district, stacked huge piles of the coarse jig tailings on the near-by river bottom. Rain and snowfall are heavy in the Coeur d'Alene district, as it is on the heavily timbered Pacific slope of the Bitter Root Mountains. The lead-zinc mill of Phelps Dodge Corporation, Copper Queen Branch, Mines Division, Bisbee, Arizona, is about 3 miles from the main hoisting shafts of the Junction and Campbell mines at Lowell. All the ore treated in the mill is obtained from these two mines. The mill was designed for an all-flotation treatment of 450 tons of lead-zinc ore per day, and has been operated at that capacity since the start of milling operations on Nov. 17, 1945. An expansion program is underway whereby the mill capacity will be doubled, but this article describes only the original program and presents results of the 450-ton operation. General Description The milling plant consists of an ore-receiving bin and three steel-constructed buildings housing, respectively, the primary crushing equipment, the secondary crushing equipment, and the ore-storage bins, grinding, flotation, and filtering equipment. The mill site is the one that was used for a previous copper-concentrating plant, which was operated over a period of years and then dismantled. There remained from this operation some milling equipment, a reservoir for mill-water supply, railroad tracks, tailings-disposal ponds, and a steel-constructed building, all of which were incorporated in the design of the present lead-zinc mill. The location plan of the plant layout is shown in Fig I. The flowsheet of the mill is based on the conventional scheme for lead-zinc treatment, however, several innovations were made necessary in order to utilize the existing building. Placing of equipment also was governed by the design of the building; thus making the mill unique in many respects. The following brief description of the mill building as adapted to the flowsheet points out the compactness of the installation and some of its unusual features. The first floor (Fig 2) houses the grinding equipment, with connecting conveyors for ore feeding, also an air compressor, two vacuum pumps, bins for lead and zinc concentrate storage with individual conveying systems for loading the two kinds of concentrates. Filtering of concentrates is done on the second floor, the concentrates discharging directly into the concentrate-storage bins. On this floor are the lead and zinc filters, two diaphragm pumps, sample-filtering equipment, sample-preparation room and a change room for the mill employees. The flotation machines are on the third floor, at elevations allowing a gravity flow of the lead and zinc concentrates to the thickeners. The annex to the building contains a freight elevator and provides space for all reagent mixing and feeding, also storage of reagents and grinding balls. Ilmenite, rutile, and zircon deposits of commercial importance have not been reported to-date from Turkey. However, information from recent reconnaissance activities indicates the possibility of an economically viable heavy-mineral deposit along the Black Sea coast of Turkey in the vicinity of Ormanli, northwest of Istanbul. Consequently beach and sand dune samples were collected from that area for additional analysis. Laboratory methodologies, designed to simulate standard industrial heavy-mineral plant practices, were used to analyze and evaluate the samples. Based on the analyses, and current market needs, none of the deposits in the Ormanli area qualify as a commercial heavy-mineral deposit.

This paper presents the results of a study focussed on determining the distribution of cobalt in different types of pyrite of the La Estrella IOCG deposit in Chile. In the IOCG mineral deposits, where copper is the main product, the quantification and distribution of cobalt is required to correctly define the technical and economic viability of recovering cobalt as a by-product. In the La Estrella mineral deposit, seven alteration and mineralisation events were recognised through both optical and automated electronic mineralogical analysis. Of these seven events, five different types of pyrites were identified, each with unique characteristics of the pyrite crystals. Through advanced elemental analysis of these five types of pyrites, it was determined that the concentration and distribution of cobalt within the pyrite crystal is dependent on the mineralisation event. The results indicate high cobalt concentrations in the early pyrite mineralisation events, associated with relatively fine pyrite grains, and cobalt generally occurring in a solid form in the pyrite core. The late pyrite mineralisation event exhibits the lowest concentrations of cobalt, with cobalt predominantly present along the outer periphery of the pyrite. These results are relevant from a metallurgical point of view because the preferential location of cobalt within the pyrite crystal will influence the maximum metallurgical recovery of cobalt. For this, a cobaltiferous pyrite concentrate must be formed which, according to the characteristics of pyrite, must be processed with the optimal solubilisation method. The overall objective is to ensure both good cobalt recovery and a high concentration of cobalt in the leach solution resulting from pyrite leaching. "IntroductionThe published information concerning treatment of uranium ores has been very limited as far as Canadian ores are concerned. Such information has dealt mainly with refining processes for concentrates or rich ores, designed to recover radium rather than uranium; these methods could not be economically applied to low-grade ores.The purpose of this paper is to describe treatment possibilities for some of the .ores that have been treated at the Mines Branch, and .to show how the character of these ores influences methods and results.What is a Uranium Ore?Prospecting for uranium has been extremely active during the past two years and a great many occurrences of radioactive minerals have been recorded. Such prospecting has been based to a large extent on the use of the Geiger counter in the fie1d. This equipment is an invaluable aid when the results are properly interpreted.Most definitely, indications of high radioactivity do not always prove the presence of a valuable orebody. First we have to determine:(1) Is the radioactivity due to uranium or to thorium. There is no immediate market for thorium.(2) Can the uranium in the ore be economically recovered.Chemical analysis is the most exact method of determining uranium content, but a fair estimate of the uranium, and also of the thorium, content can be made from the difference in gamma and beta activity. The Mines Branch guards against misinterpretation by determining both beta and gamma activities and, if more than a minor amount of thorium is indicated, then a Chemical analysis is made."

The mineral bastnasite is utilized to describe alternate processes for the extraction and separation of the rare-earth elements by solvent extraction. The rare earths can be acid-leached directly or fused with NaOH before acid leaching. Cerium, the major constituent, can be recovered by fractional precipitation, fractional leaching, or solvent extraction with tri-nbutyl phosphate. The latter process is capable of producing 99.5-percent pure CeO2 at 98+ percent recovery. Lanthanum is subsequently recovered by fractional precipitation or solvent extraction with a nitrogen-based extractant. A 20-stage mixer-settler operation with a primary amine extractant results in a 95-percent pure La203 fraction at 96 percent recovery. Europium is amenable to extraction from most of the remaining rare earths with an organophosphate extractant. Selective stripping of the europium, followed by reductive precipitation, produces high-purity Eu203. Another possibility for europium purification involves the differential extraction of europium with an amine followed by a sub- sequent reducing strip. Separation of the remaining elements is more difficult but can be accomplished with amine or quaternary ammonium extracts. Typical separation factors achieved are 3. 8 for praseodymium-neodymium and 10. 5 for neodymium-samarium.

THE Midvale mill of the United States Smelting Refining and Mining Company is situated on a flat site whose elevation is 50 ft above that of the Jordan River. Tailings are impounded in the area between the river and the flat upon which the mill and railroad switchyard are located. The water supply is pumped from the Galena canal which leads from the river at a point some ten miles to the south. The mill has a present capacity of approximately 1700 tons daily. It started out originally in 1926 as a 750 ton three-unit plant. The tonnage was gradually increased to 1200 tons by 1934, and in late 1935 a fourth unit was added. The accompanying flowsheet shows the principal equipment and how it is utilized. The ore is principally sulphide with varying degrees of oxidation, with individual lots ranging widely in both precious and base metal content. The conditions of amine concentration and pH necessary for the concentration of fine haematite particles at the iso-octane-water interface have been determined. Results obtained from the related studies on the effect of pH and dodecylamine concentration on the adsorption density, electrokinetic potential, contact angle and concentration of various amine species in the system are included. A good correlation was obtained between these different variables. THE Santa Barbara Unit of the Compania Minera Asarco, of which the San Diego mill is a part, is in the Parral District of southern Chihuahua. Although the concentration of sulfide ores has been practised in Santa Barbara since 1900, the San Diego mill, completed in 1921, was the first plant in northern Mexico to attempt the treatment of oxidized lead ores. From the milling point of view the many ores that have been treated at San Diego are very similar, the differences among them being rather of degree than type. Since 1921 the number of ores from different sources treated simultaneously has varied from four to eleven; in no case have any distinctive characteristics warranted the separate treatment of any of these. The zone of oxidation, source of the ores milled at San Diego, extends to a depth of 300 to 400 ft. below the surface. These ores carry more gold and less silver, lead, copper, and zinc than the underlying sulfide ores; the gangue minerals appear comparatively unchanged by oxidation and leaching. Lead occurs in diverse minerals, chiefly in cerussite, galena, and angle-site, the proportion of the lead in galena varying considerably in the different mines. "Rare earth elements (REEs) found in coal are in the form of minerals, ion-substitution with clays and organically bound. Rare earth minerals (REMs) such as monazite exist in coal and have a grain size less than 5 microns. Froth flotation was successful in concentrating REMs existing in a thickener underflow material derived from Fire Clay seam coal which contained around 300 ppm of rare earth elements (REEs). Conditioning with fatty acid followed by processing using multiple stages of conventional flotation produced a final concentrate containing 2300 ppm REEs. Using a laboratory flotation column, a concentrate containing around 4700 ppm of total REEs was produced equating to an enrichment ratio of 10:1. INTRODUCTION Rare earth elements (REEs) are becoming increasingly important and have been widely used as raw materials for the production of phosphor, metal catalysts, magnets, and batteries [1, 2]. REE recovery from alternative sources such as coal and coal by-products has the potential to stabilize the economic viability of coal mining operations while providing a dependable supply of critical materials. The average REE content of the world coal is around 60-70 ppm [2]. There are many well-known coal beds with high contents of REEs such as those in the Far East coalfields in Russia (300-1000 ppm), the Fire Clay coal seam in eastern Kentucky (500 ppm), and the Sydney Basin in Nova Scotia, Canada (72-483 ppm) [3-6]. The occurrence of REEs in coal and coal by-products can be classified into three types, i.e., rare earth minerals such as monazite and xenotime, ion exchangeable REEs in clays, and REEs associated with organic matrix. The particle size of the rare earth (RE) minerals in coal and coal by-products is very small and normally in the micron and/or nanometer scales. The flotation technique, which is based on the surface chemistry difference, has been widely used to treat fine rare earth industrial minerals such as monazite, xenotime, and bastnaesite [7-11]. As such, flotation is a promising method for the concentration of REEs from coal and coal by-products. In the current study, rare earth flotation was conducted using the fine coal refuse generated at an operating coal preparation plant treating coal from the Fire Clay seam. REE concentration by flotation required an appropriate amount of grinding and control of the pH value while using typical collectors. Prior to RE concentration, release tests were conducted to evaluate the floatability of the recoverable coal and the REE distribution in the flotation fractions in the fine refuse. The following brief paper is intended, to apply to the concentration of the silver-lead ores at Broken Hill, New South Wales, generally, but more particularly to the process as applied to the ores in the Block 10 mine. The attached plans are similar inmany respects to those prepared, recently for the Block 10 company.Most of the information here given is already well known to those members who are conversant with the concentration practices of this field, but it is the writer's object to give just a few of those figures which he found difficult to obtain when first engaging in practical work. At that time no text-books were at hand from which it was possible to get sufficient details for practical working purposes.It is first supposed that the mine has been thoroughly explored and has been found to contain a lbde sufficient in size ·and quality to warrant the erection of a concentrating plant. The points then to determine are:-(1.) The quantity and cost of water available for steam-making and ore-dressing purposes.(2.) The most convenient site for the mill.

Traditional engineering practice for concentrator design uses a mixture of risk minimisation options and capital minimisation approaches. Often this is based on the preferences and experiences of the engineers involved.A geometallurgical approach involves identifying primary lithology, alteration, and mineral dispersion patterns within a deposit to allow representative samples for test programs. This provides a method to infer from laboratory test results meaningful production data for larger amounts of the ore body. Geometallurgical models can be integrated into the resource block model and subsequent mine plan and can assist in predicting when difficulties in the processing route might be expected, allow adjustment of the design to compensate for these or provide an early warning system so that production forecasts can be more adequately developed. Simulation modelling is the process of creating a computer model of a real system based on mathematical logic. In simulated time, the model explores the randomness and chronological sequencing of events observed on real systems. The objective is to mimic the real system with sufficient accuracy to make predictions of real behaviour under experimental conditions. Amec Foster Wheeler often use the ‘discrete-event’ simulation modelling technique. This method is well suited for inclusion of the statistical variation of effects in unit operation, mechanical availability, throughput and operating strategy (based on historical operating data for equipment downtime), operating schedules and equipment capacity.
