Real output expanded at a 3.0% rate worldwide in 1987, a slightly lower pace than the 3.2% rate in 1986. The decline was accounted for largely by slower growth in the U.S.S.R. and the East European countries, as well as in the developing countries (table 1). According to the International Monetary Fund, output of industrial countries output grew 3.1% and rose most strongly in Japan, the United Kingdom, and Canada (table 2). U.S. economic growth remained at 2.9%, the same as in 1986. Consumer and government spending declined in industrial countries, while gross fixed investment: rent increased. This increase in fixed investment expenditures could be attributed partly to lagged results of some 1986 developments: the fall in oil prices, declining interest rates, and exchange rate changes. The U.S. budget deficit, as well as the large external deficits and surpluses among major industrial countries, hindered further growth .2 A report from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) indicates that the impact of the October stock market crash was short-lived because it hit economies that were growing strongly, anyway.3 The growth of output in the developing countries slowed in 1987; however, output declined in the fuel-exporting developing countries. These countries have been adversely affected by weakness in oil prices and the depreciation of the U.S. dollar. The weighted average of inflation rates in industrial countries--as measured by the [ ] GNP deflator, was 2.9% in 1987, down from 3.4% in 1986. Prices rose 3.0% in the United States, up from 2.6% the previous year. Inflation for 1988 is expected to remain slightly higher in the United States than in Japan and the Federal Republic of Germany because of recent exchange rates changes and the elimination of slack productive capacity and labor in the U.S. economy. In February of 1989 the Mission Complex of ASARCO Incorporated completed an expansion of its concentrator, raising the base mining rate from 25,900 TPO (28,500 STPD) to 37,200 TPO (41,000 STPD). The expansion was accomplished by extending the twelve existing Mission ball mills in length, by installing the grinding circuit from Asarco's idled Sacaton Concentrator along with various auxiliary equipment, and by modifications to the flotation circuit and water systems. This paper will give a brief history of the consolidation of the ore body which made the expansion possible and explain the various parts of the expansion.

In June of 1998, the DeBruce Grain Elevator was devastated by an accidental explosion caused by the unintentional ignition of grain dust. The DeBruce grain elevator was the largest ‘single head-house’ grain elevator in the nation. It was comprised of 450 cylindrical grain silos, 30 feet in diameter by 120 feet tall, with a centrally located headhouse. Immediately after the explosion, rescue operations were started for seven missing workers. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) had taken over operations of the site by day two. On day three FEMA contacted the Washington DC office of the Department of Energy for explosive expertise, who in turn contacted explosives experts at Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) and Los Alamos National Laboratories (LANL). FEMA was looking for guidance in making the decision to downgrade their operation from a rescue to a recovery operation. Based on some chemical equilibrium calculations, and basic explosive engineering techniques, the SNL/LANL team was able to provide the necessary input to allow the decision to be made for the operational downgrade. At this point, only one worker remained un-recovered.

BHP’s Western Australian Iron Ore Operations (WAIO) move approximately 250 million tons of ore per annum. The magnitude of the constant changes to the terrain models along with the diverse output and presentation requirements of numerous stakeholders presents significant challenges for the geospatial team. This paper describes how the WAIO Survey team use a combination of technology and optimised workflows to capture, ingest, publish and access large data sets for diverse stakeholder requirements. Machine learning for processing of data and the use of web based systems to track and prioritise task allocation of resources will be discussed in detail, in addition to the changes to the traditional roles of surveyors from the use of automation and mobile technology.

There is a critical need for effective instructional materials at the university level and for an upgrading of mine safety and health in the mining engineering curriculum. A fundamental approach to mine safety and health is recast into the familiar 3 E's: engineering, education, and enforcement, in that order. Each is briefly reviewed and their interdependence emphasized. A unique philosophy for successfully integrating safety and health principles into the mining engineering curriculum is offered. The concept of textbook ?tailoring? is discussed and defended, permitting rapid assemblage and synthesis of existing educational materials. Final recommendations are made for a u, comprehensive approach to mine safety and health education in the undergraduate curriculum.

"Civil design has changed in many ways using BIM (Building Information Modelling) technology in its most recent form. Such a technological breakthrough has not been successful so far in traditional oriented Engineering Geology, except in the Mining and oil exploration markets with budgets on much different scales. The fact is that paper, pencil and hand drawn sketches are still state of the art and a perfectly acceptable way of producing subjective geological interpretations.Using the technology available, we have developed a set of procedures and techniques to combine the latest surveying and remote sensing technology, GIS based tools to manage large data sets and BIM modelling techniques in a 3D geological environment.To demonstrate the concept, the forthcoming Karavanke tunnel project (Slovenia) has been chosen for testing techniques. The project, with its rich documentation from previous phases and new data available, represented a good basis for testing the possibility of digitizing geological data while communicating with Leapfrog Geo 3D modelling algorithms. This type of procedure would then allow engineers at the construction site to use the 3D model for prognosis and evaluation, while upgrading it daily with new information.INTRODUCTIONThe Karavanke tunnel crosses the mountain range on the border between Slovenia and Austria. As the geology is very complex due to its imbricate fan structure, a series of geological – geotechnical and hydrogeological investigations have been performed since the 1970s, resulting in extensive project documentation. The construction of the 7864 m long single-tube two-lane tunnel took place in the late 1980s. Currently, the tunnel represents a critical point on Pan-European Transport Corridor X (Salzburg, Austria – Thessaloniki, Greece), with insufficient safety measures. The need for improved traffic flow and enhanced road safety led the Slovenian government in 2013 to a decision to continue with activities regarding the construction of the second tunnel tube 70 m east of the existing tunnel.The extensive project documentation from previous investigation phases and construction of a new tunnel tube presented a good base for a pilot project, in order to test the emerging new technologies for data acquisition, processing and analysis in a 3D environment. Several products are available on the market for data acquisition and 3D geological modelling, but only a few can be applied in the civil design, as well. Developing a standard format and procedure for implementing the 3D geological model using new remote sensing techniques, 3D geological modelling tools, such as Leapfrog Geo and BIM (Building Information Modelling) modelling techniques would move the Engineering Geology, Geotechnics and Tunneling to a more advanced level. 3D modelling tools would therefore not only be used as a visualization tool, but would also contribute to in a more efficient communication and workflow between the professionals involved in the project."

Safety performance in many companies and even industries has stalled in the last decade. Accidents rates are improving but more slowly and yet, serious accidents and fatality rates are not: in fact, these rates of more serious incidents have plateaued or deteriorating. In more dramatic cases, organizations that had ?exemplary? safety statistics, suddenly had a catastrophic or multi-fatality event occurring. Popular books such as In Search of Excellence of Peters and Waterman or Good to Great of Jim Collins created many delusional ?secrets? or recipes, to achieve great performance and yet, most of those ?great? or ?excellent? companies have now declined in their performance, some dramatically and some have fallen from grace, like Fanny Mae, a company Jim Collins identified as a ?great? one, that had to be bailed out in the latest financial crisis. These organizations share several ?delusions? about managing a business, and often, these delusions are created by academics, consultants and authors of popular books about (safety) management. More damaging however is that safety management is defined by a set of key practices or axioms: a focus on human error, compliance to rules and regulations, creating consistency of systems and actions, reacting to accidents and incidents and on prevention of those, measuring safety with performance metrics and rewarding employees on those measurements. All of these axioms contain the seeds of destruction, and they create conditions and dynamics that precede the disaster - and ironically, they are all 'good things' we do in safety management. For example, a mere focus on safety in the business, and the measurement of it, create a culture of repression of mistakes and incidents, leading to a situation where the organization knows incrementally less and less of risks and risktaking behaviour - until the day it all coincides destructively! This paper discusses seven such safety delusions and how they impact on the views and safety management approaches. They are: ??The delusion of (risk) control, that risks can actually be identified, analyzed and mitigated. ??The delusion of compliance, that mere compliance to rules will safeguard the business ??The delusion of consistency, that standard operating procedures will ensure safe operations ??The delusion of predictability, that accidents and trends tell us everything about the risks of the future ??The delusion of human error, that people are the weakest link and that it can actually be dealt with through discipline and enforcement. ??The delusion of statistical trends, that safety is measurable with statistics ??The delusion of invulnerability, that we have achieved high levels integrity and capability to deal wit risks. Organizations that suffered catastrophes all share some or all of these delusions and this paper traces how these played a role in many disasters, ranging from the Titanic, Challenger, Piper Alpha, Bhopal, BP Deepwater Horizon and many more.

The 8-millisecond rule has been in use for many years as a basic technique to help minimize vibration levels from surface blasting operations. The rule was based on work carried out in the 1960’s by the USBM by recording the vibration levels from a series of test blasts in a quarry over a range of distances. This work included the firing of a series of single hole blasts and a number of single row production blasts using a variety of inter-hole delay times. The delay times employed were limited by the technology available at that time to instantaneous, 9, 17 and 34 milliseconds. There have been several papers in recent years suggesting that the use of the 8-millisecond rule is no longer required, when using electronic detonators, due to their enhanced accuracy and greater initiation pattern design flexibility. This paper examines this proposition by revisiting the original work and employing the linear superposition technique to reprocess some of the original recordings. Similar techniques are then applied to a large database of single hole vibration recordings for a range of rock types, distances, and number of decks, with calculated reinforcements compared to the minimum separations in typical patterns. The results suggest that there is some validity to the 8-millisecond rule when applied to electronic detonators but not in the way it is traditionally applied. Simple guidance is suggested for those designing blasts with electronic detonators to minimize vibration levels even if the benefits of linear superposition trials are not available.

A brief history of channel sampling in South African gold mines is followed by a chronicle of different sampling events and sampling methods that used the traditional ?hammer and chisel? approach as well as diamond core extraction of the sample. The problems associated with each method of sample collection are documented and the use of a laser scanner to measure the exact volumes of sample material extracted from a correctly delimited sample site are considered. Areas where increment delimitation errors (IDEs), increment extraction errors (IEEs), increment weighting errors (IWEs), and increment preparation errors (IPEs) occur were investigated. A ?simulated chip sample model? is introduced and provides the basis for comparing the percentages of error introduced as a result of improper sampling. The heterogeneity experiment showed that reefs that are more homogenous tend have lower extraction errors than the more complex carbon-rich reefs, which may contribute to understanding the poor mine call factor on mines exploiting the latter types of reef. "In the 1990s metal prices were trending in a long-term decline and the usual cost-cutting exercises were adopted. Cuts to research and development made innovation difficult and the outlook was grim. But necessity is a strong motivator, and these conditions spurred the Mine to Mill movement that optimised across organisational ‘silos’ and utilised new technology tools, innovative software and increased computing power. Many applications of Mine to Mill exploited the fact that comminution is usually the site processing bottleneck and blasting is more efficient at breaking rock than grinding. This approach sought to: understand and characterise rock breakage from mining to the milldevelop models and simulators for blast design, fragmentation, crusher and mill circuitsdevelop tools to measure in real time the particle size distribution of rocks on run-of-mine (ROM) muck piles, at the primary crusher truck dump pocket and on conveyorsensure effective communication across the silos between geologists, blast design engineers, mining engineers and metallurgists.These methods and the technology tools available in the 1990s were widely adopted at numerous sites around the world with significant benefits. Semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill throughput increases of 10–20 per cent were common. This was the advance the industry desperately needed. It was low capital cost; it was obvious. It was here to stay.Except, in too many cases, it didn’t. In the minerals price boom of the 2000s Mine to Mill was no longer necessary to ‘survive’, even though it was still good business. Some operations, including some of the early success stories, slipped back to old habits of optimising within organisation silos instead of across them. Fortunately, other operators still embraced Mine to Mill and developed new techniques. Mine to Mill was still successful, but not as widely adopted as we had expected it to be. Now the boom has ended and operations are again under cost pressure. Since these are the same circumstances that created Mine to Mill, it seems time to achieve the wider adoption. Since the 1990s many new or advanced technology tools are now available for Mine to Mill projects: blasthole sensors, new explosives formulations, new blasting techniques and modelling, ore tracking devices, improved image analysis to determine size, texture and colour of coarse ore, grade sensors, whole-stream simulation tools, and even more powerful computing hardware and data analysis software. This paper investigates the adequacy of current gas monitoring techniques to adequately detect spontaneous combustion in underground coalmines. Despite being in the 21st century spontaneous combustion continues to occur in underground coalmines sometimes being detected only at a very advanced stage. Control of the incident is often then very expensive and time consuming. The adequacy needs to be assessed not only from the point of view of the analysis technique be it tube bundle, gas chromatograph or real time sensor but also the number, location and sampling frequency of the monitoring locations. Recommendations are made to optimise monitoring processes and recognise limitations of current techniques.

"There are two accomplishments of air and gas drilling: a new series of economic and mechanical challenges; and, acceptance as a standard drilling and completion tool.The new challenges are related to the concept of using a gaseous circulating medium in drilling for oil or gas. For purposes of discussion, a two part division has been made: the challenge of fluid invasion control and that of equipment and tools. Great strides have been made in the development of materials and techniques to combat formation fluid invasion. Chemicals and the ""mist drilling"" technique, now in use, have the versatility to cope with a wide range of downhole fluid entry conditions.Equipment and tools have been developed to meet the challenges of better, more economic drilling and completion possible with a gaseous circulating fluid. Economic and operational challenges remain.Acceptance of air and gas drilling as a normal operating tool was reached with difficulty. It is now established as a means of reducing costs in exploratory and develop-mental well drilling, exemplified in a recent study of 226 wells covering 419,407 feet of hole in the United States. Air reached the projected depth in 85 per cent of the operations, although formation water was encountered in 48.7 per cent of the holes. Slim hole bit performance and cost all compared for overall bit averages as part of analysis."

Ground vibration caused by blasting has become a common concern, especially when blasting is conducted near buildings or structures. Uncontrolled vibrations can potentially damage nearby infrastructure if appropriate control measures are not implemented. PT Tambang Semen SUKABUMI, a limestone mining company, is planning to carry out blasting activities near a crusher building located approximately 80 meters away. This building is classified as a Class 5 structure, with a maximum allowable Peak Particle Velocity (PPV) of 40 mm/s, in accordance with the Indonesian national standard SNI 7571:2023. To ensure compliance with this limit, a Signature Holes Analysis (SHA) was conducted using the Hanwha HEBS II electronic detonator initiation system. This analysis measured ground vibration from single-hole blasts, with the average vibration from three SHA holes recorded at 49 mm/s. A site constant analysis using the scaled distance formula yielded a multiple R value of 0.87. However, the ANOVA table showed a significance-F value of 0.24, which is greater than 0.05 indicating that the regression model used for prediction was not statistically significant. Using the SHA data and assuming a maximum of 30 blast holes, a recommended delay timing of 22 × 15 milliseconds was selected. This produced a predicted PPV of 17.25 mm/s. The comparison between predicted and actual PPV values demonstrates that the delay configuration derived from Signature Hole Analysis provides reliable results. The observed deviations range from -16% to +29%, with an average deviation of only 8%, indicating a high level of accuracy and consistency. Using the actual blast data, three model prediction were applied for predicting the most accurate prediction that close to the actual value. The SHA method, utilizing actual single-hole vibration measurements and optimized delay timing, provided the lowest average deviation of ±8% and the smallest absolute error (2.45 mm/s) from actual measurements, demonstrating high reliability for sites with sufficient signature data. Meanwhile, the log-log regression model yielded the highest coefficient of determination (R² = 0.751) and the smallest prediction deviation (3%) when standard deviation margins were considered, making it highly effective for predictive modeling.

THE Achotla mill of the Cia. Minera de Pe[n]oles is of special interest in that it is one of the few still employing the chloridization process. The ore milled comes from the Suriana mine and consists of both oxide and sulphide, from neither of which can the gold or silver be extracted by a simple cyanide treatment. The mill was built in 1927, after several years of study in the development of the process1, and operated from December of that year until October 1930. Operations were resumed in February 1935, and have been continuous since, treating approximately 5000 tons per month, while the mine is getting up to full tonnage of 6500 tons per month. Transportation Of Supplies The property is in Guerrero, Mexico, some 175 km. by airline southwest of Mexico City. The mill site is at Temisco (Fig. I), 8 km. from the Balsas River and 4.8 km. by aerial tram from the mine. At Temisco are the general office, shops, warehouses and laboratory serving both mine and mill. Here sufficient water is available either from a small creek running through the property or from the Balsas River, also convenient and ample storage space for the tailings. With the exception of the mine timber and a few native building materials which may be obtained locally, all supplies for both mine and mill are brought down the Balsas River from Balsas, the terminal of a Mexican National Railway line out of Mexico City. The method of transportation on the river is interesting. Rapids with very fast water are numerous, prohibiting the use of mechanically propelled boats. Those used resemble large, flat-bottomed rowboats some 22 ft. long by 8 ft. wide (Fig. 2). They are manned by two oarsmen sitting in the bow, each handling one large oar, and usually another man in the stern who, with his oar, assists in steering the boat, especially when the rapids are run. The Acid Drainage Technology Initiative (ADTI) was initiated in 1995 by federal agencies, the National Mining Association (NMA) and the Interstate Mining Compact Commission (IMCC) to identify, evaluate and develop cost-effective and practical acid drainage technologies. In 1999, ADTI was expanded through the addition of the metal mining sector, which is focused on drainage quality issues related to metal mines. ADTI addresses drainage quality issues from abandoned, active, and future coal and metal mines. The guiding principle of ADTI is to build consensus among industry, federal and state regulatory agencies on acid drainage technology development and technology transfer issues. ADTI is focusing its efforts on mine drainage prediction, sampling/monitoring, modelling and avoidance/remediation. ADTI is not a regulatory or policy development program. ADTI includes the Coal Mining Sector (CMS) and the Metal Mining Sector (MMS) under the overall guidance of the ADTI Operations Committee. The Operations Committee consists of representatives from industry, state and federal government and academia. The Coal Mining Sector includes two committees; a prediction committee and an avoidance and remediation committee. The Metal Mining Sector includes steering committee and work groups on prediction, sampling and monitoring, modelling, mitigation, and pit lakes. The Coal Mining Sector has produced two publications on the prediction and prevention of acid drainage. The Metal Mining Sector has workbooks under preparation covering the work group topics. This past winter, the Metal Mining Sector, working with the US Bureau of Land Management, presented a satellite training session on acid drainage. ADTI has evolved in response to changing needs and technologies as evidenced by the addition of the Metal Mining Sector in 1999. The Operations Committee and the members of the Coal and Metal Mining Sectors will guide future direction in response to identified issues.

Cyanidation of gold ore results in formation not only of Na[Au(CN)2], but also cyanometallate complexes of some transition metals. During subsequent gold extraction from such solutions and pulps, using activated carbons (??), a number of problems arise. An effective solution of the problem is not possible without detailed knowledge of the interaction mechanism of transition metals cyanide complexes with AC particles. The chemical properties of AC particles and graphene, saturated with [?u(CN)n](n-1)- (n=2, 3), were studied by XPS, ESR, SQUID, and DFT. The obtained results were compared with the data on AC adsorption of anionic form of Ag(I), Au(I), Cd(II), Hg(II), Cr(III), Fe(II), Fe(III), Co(III), Rh(III), Ni(II), Pd(II), Pt(II) and Pt(IV) cyanide complexes. The adsorption of [?u(CN)n](n-1)- (n=2, 3) on AC from aqueous solutions in air is accompanied with oxidation of ?u(I) atoms. Besides, Cu(II) and Cu(III) compounds were found on AC surface. Quantum-chemical calculations confirmed the possibility of formation of Cu(I) complex with carbene-like sites of AC. The reactions of [?u(CN)n](n-1)- (n=2, 3) complexes and aromatic carbenes and their cation-radical were theoretically studied at DFT PBE level to obtain the information on adsorption of cyanometallate complexes on AC. Carbenes with different fragments were regarded as a model of activated carbons, which have free edge sites with paired o and n electrons. It was shown that [Cu(CN)2]- bounds firmly with triplet carbene, if one Cu-CN bond breaks. The dissociation process occurs through a multi-step spin-crossing mechanism to reduce total spin multiplicity of the metal-carbene complex. The behavior of transition element complexes in contact with AC in aqueous solutions is determined by the following characteristics: geometrical structure of ionic complexes; nature of ligands bonded to the central atom; concentration of reactive oxygen species in solution and its pH; nature of binding sites of AC.

An investigation was carried out by Mintek to investigate the influence of additions of gold to ?Fecraloy?, alloys based on Fe-Cr-Al. The aim was to try and improve the oxidation resistance of the ?Fecraloy? alloys at elevated temperatures over extended periods of time. The ?Fecraloy? alloys are very oxidation resistant alloys already employed in industry as substrates for metallic catalysts in auto-catalyst systems for high performance cars. Since their life and durability is limited by the slow, but steady, oxidation of the substrates, any change in the growth or stability of the oxides could be an improvement.

This paper investigates the recovery of platinum group metals (PGMs) from a dilute cyanide leach solution containing base metals, in a manner similar to that used for gold extraction in a typical CIP process, and focuses on both the adsorption and elution stages. The carrier-phase extraction of precious metals using activated carbon offers significant advantages over other processes in terms of simplicity, the high pre-concentration factor, rapid phase separation, and relatively low capital and operating costs. As a sorbent, activated carbon is still by far the most important material because of its large surface area, high adsorption capacity, porous structure, negligible environmental toxicity, low cost, and high purity standards. Adsorption tests were performed on a pregnant alkaline leach solution (0.15 ppm Pt, 0.38 ppm Pd, 0.1 ppm Au) resulting from cyanide extraction performed in column leach tests. The initial adsorption rates of platinum, palladium, and gold were very fast and recoveries of these three metals were approximately 90 per cent after 2 hours and 100 per cent, 97.4 per cent, and 99.9 per cent respectively after 72 hours. The parameters that influence the extraction of PGMs and Au were examined to assess their relative importance during the adsorption process in order to provide the basis for process optimization. The concentration of thiocyanate was not identified as significant factor for PGMs adsorption, while nickel concentration was the most significant extraction process parameter. Base metal cyanide complexes adsorb and compete with the PGM complexes for sites on activated carbon, and while copper adsorption can be minimized by adjusting the residence time, nickel adsorbs at approximately the same rate as that of the PGMs, influencing the loading capacity and adsorption kinetics of the PGMs. The feasibility of eluting platinum and palladium cyanide complexes from activated carbon using an analogue of the AARL process was investigated. Platinum and palladium elute from activated carbon almost to completion in 4 to 5 bed volumes at 80°C, while the elution of gold at this temperature is slow, with a significant amount of gold still to be eluted after 16 bed volumes. Cyanide pre-treatment was found to have a significant influence on PGM elution. Higher cyanide concentration in the pre-treatment step results in more efficient elution up to a point, and experiments suggest the possibility of an optimum cyanide concentration, beyond which elution efficiency starts decreasing.
