"Drying (water removal) prior to smelting is always economically feasible. Unnecessary heating of vapour can thus be eliminated resulting in savings of5-15 MUSD every year.Thermodynamically removal of one ton of water out of copper concentrate at 100 °C (with 10 % moisture) requires approximately 3150 MJ/tH2o, consisting of heating of the water (377 MJ), heating of the concentrate (509 MJ) and water evaporation (2260 MJ). This is quite independent of the selected drying technology. In reality some more heat is needed as higher temperature is practiced to enhance the drying performance and to reduce the equipment size.Major nominator in drying energy efficiency is amount of gases, which depends greatly on the drying technology. Dryers based on direct heating with fossil fuels have high gas flow rates, and thus they require additional energy of about 1400-1600 MJ/tH2o, compared to indirect modemsteam drying at 250-400 MJ/tH2o.Significant benefits in energy consumption (900-1300 MJ/tH2o) with additional potential for a bonus profit of 2-4 MUSD/y year, together with full elimination of some 40 000 tpy CO2 per mid-size dryer is available by selecting sustainable, energy efficient steam drying.IntroductionRemoval of water from the concentrate is very energy intensive thus having a significant environmental impact. However, drying prior to smelting is always economically feasible and very often viable also from the perspective of process operations. This environmental impact of drying can, however, be decreased or even fully eliminated with proper selection of the drying technology.Energy incorporated in drying consists always of a number of phases like liquid (water), solids (concentrate) and gases (water vapour, purging I dilution air, combustion gases). Each phase is heated to a specific temperature during the drying process.Heating of water, heating of the concentrate and water evaporation consumes more or less the same amount of energy despite of the drying technology (3150 MJ per ton of water). In conventional drying this amount of energy is achieved by combustion of fossil fuels wirg subsequent CO2 emission. Alternatively, chemical energy derived from sulphide smelting can be utilized in a form of steam thus generating zero emission ofCO2, in modem steam drying."

The use of thickened tailings and pastes stems from a paradigm shift towards designing tailings disposal sites to suit their surrounding environment, rather than manipulating the environment to accommodate the tailings. Thickened tailings and pastes usually exhibit non-Newtonian behaviour, so a thorough understanding of the rheological characteristics of the material is required in order to determine the disposal plant operating conditions.Full Cost Accounting techniques may be used to provide financial justification for the implementation of alternative tailings disposal techniques through the calculation of a disposal cost per tonne of tailings over the life of the facility. Improved disposal methods such as thickened tailings disposal involve additional initial capital expenditure but reduce environmental impacts. The cost savings associated with environmental impact mitigation are reflected in Full Cost Accounting outcomes.Rheological characterisation is significant as a design basis that may be analysed using Full Cost Accounting to justify the initial capital expenditure of dry disposal systems for improved environmental performance."

The use of rheological information is of high importance in evaluating the spreading characteristics, the transportation and the dewatering of thickened mineral tailings. The principles outlined may be applied to many industries encompassing a wide range of waste materials. The main obstacle to the widespread implementation of dry disposal methods has been the high initial capital cost of the methods due to the dewatering step, and the high cost of pumping thick suspensions across any great distance. Proper and thorough costing of tailings disposal activities combined with an accounting approach that shows closure and post-closure care costs on a per tonne basis of tailings disposed throughout the life of the tailings facility will show that dry disposal methods are more favourable than they might seem on initial appraisal."

"The SUSOP« Framework is a new technique that helps incorporate sustainable development principles and objectives into the design and operation of businesses. Developed through the Co-operative Research Centre for Sustainable Resource Processing, it brings a design methodology to sustainability, similar to what hazard and risk techniques such as HAZOP did for safety.Metallica Minerals Limited (æMetallicaÆ) adopted the SUSOP« framework to help identify opportunities and risks that could directly improve or affect its flagship SCONI (nickel-cobalt and scandium) project. This project has the potential to become the worldÆs largest producer of scandium oxide (æscandiaÆ) which is used in solid oxide fuel cells and strengthens aluminium alloys. Located northwest of Townsville in Queensland, the plant site will be located within the previously mined and partially rehabilitated Greenvale Nickel Mine. By applying the SUSOP« framework through a series of multi-disciplinary workshops and offline analysis, Metallica was able to identify numerous sustainability opportunities and risks. Opportunities were clustered together to form concepts to develop a more holistic understanding of the projectÆs overall potential contribution to sustainable development as well as determine where key risks could be mitigated. Four key concepts were identified: Waste and Water Workforce Community and Enterprise Development Energy and Greenhouse Gases (GHG). Metallica was able to include a range of initiatives that could deliver enhanced environmental, social and community outcomes into their mine development plan. These included measures to reduce reliance on water, reduce the volume of waste, provide local opportunities for training and skilled employment and create support for local enterprise development. These measures also resulted in a significant reduction in the capital estimate of the project.This paper provides an overview of the SUSOP« framework, details its application to the SCONI project and discusses the outcomes that will help establish the projectÆs strong sustainable development credentials and improved business outcomes.CITATION:Corder, G, Currey, N and Becker, G, 2013. "Information presented in this paper can be used to support deep soil mixing, subsurface grouting and slurry wall technology as sustainable construction technologies. Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) is the default cementitious material used by Deep Foundation Institute (DFI) Members for geotechnical work. Owners, engineers and contractors can contribute to the sustainability of a geotechnical project by increasing the use blended hydraulic cements and industrial byproducts to replace some of the OPC in mix designs. Sustainability is defined as the quality of not being harmful to the environment or depleting natural resources. Production of cementitious materials consumes natural raw materials and energy while also generating air emissions and waste. Life Cycle Assessments can be used to compare the relative environmental impacts of one cementitious material to another. Blended hydraulic cements (BHCs) are interground (or blended) mixtures of Supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCMs) with OPC. Commonly used SCMs include fly ash, ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) and limestone. Examples of industrial byproducts commonly used in geotechnical work include coal combustion residuals (CCR) (aka fly ash), and ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS). Much of life cycle impact of these SCMs and industrial byproducts have already been borne by the industries that generated them. There is increasing awareness to LCA and sustainability of different materials used on projects. This is evident in the application of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program. The savings in environmental impact with the use of SCMs and industrial byproducts can make proposed use of these materials in a geotechnical project more attractive in terms of sustainability. DuPont’s Florida Plant has been mining in northeast Florida and supplying titanium-bearing minerals, zircon and staurolite for over 50years.The site has successfully implemented and “sustained” a land reclamation/habitat enhancement program that goes beyond regulatory requirements and standard industry practices. However, the term sustainability has been used by so many organizations, many with divergent viewpoints, that it is important for a mine to develop its over-all concept and approach to sustainable operation. As a foundation, the outstanding reclamation efforts at DuPont’s mine will be presented followed by a broader look at the overall sustainability strategies and tactics used at the site.

With the ever increasing demand for commodities, due to changes in lifestyle and increase in population, people are striving to find ways to keep up. Mining is one essential element in the solution. Though being a powerful boost to a country?s economy, mining can have disastrous effects in the absence of waste management practice and technologies; because of the harmful heavy metals and toxic chemical waste that is generated as a by-product in mining operations. It is an established and documented fact that pollution is a major concern for communities having to live with it. Disproportionate water consumption significantly impacts local rivers and ponds thereby reducing freshwater availability and have given rise to social conflict. In light of these misgivings, management and treatment of mine water and waste has gained considerable attention recently. In this paper, we summarize some of the treatment methods that can be adopted by mining companies to reduce their environmental footprint. Appropriate treatment solutions depend on various factors including available space and capital cost for treatment solutions, type of mining waste generated, current state of the mining plant, geographical location, and other location specific issues. Incorporating waste and water management solutions as a priority within mining operations is critical for addressing increasing regulatory requirements and a starting point for initiating other Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs. Collaboration among mining companies, NGOs, local community, and government facilitates successful projects which build trust leading to long term relationships. In this paper we also talk about the benefits of implementing a CSR project that captures the focus of local communities and allows the mining company to focus on operations. Implementing a sustainable business model that incorporates the broader community impacted by projects will continue to benefit even after the mining company ceases operation in that location. The challenges involved with implementing effective CSR projects, which require measuring and reporting effectiveness to create a positive social, economic, and environmental impact is also presented in this paper.

According to the model of product life cycles, the global coal mining industry is in the stagnation phase. The coal demand of the main consumer, China, has peaked in 2013 and is slowly declining. The Norwegian sovereign wealth fund, the world´s largest, has excluded coal-related companies for ethical reasons. Important players like the UN or the EU have already begun to describe pathways towards de-carbonization. Increasing competition between coal mining companies and the mining regions can be expected worldwide if companies want to keep their positions on the global and national coal markets. Companies will focus on the best deposits. European countries like France, Spain or Germany are only forerunners of this development - their centuries of coal production have been finished. The concept of Sustainable Development (SD) is fundamentally based on a model of progress where ecological, economic and social dimensions should be developed equally and positively. But without the idea of competition, the concept of SD is incomplete. Questions arise, such as: How can SD be realized on stagnating or declining markets without guarantees for companies “to live forever”? How can SD be a corporate goal in a phase of decline? How can declining mining regions sustainably progress into a better future? The German hard coal mining industry´s lifecycle has ended in 2018 after 60 years of stagnation and decline. As of 2019, all hard coal consumed in Germany will be imported, especially from Colombia, Russia and South Africa. What has been done in Germany to handle the coal decline in a sustainable way and the lessons learned from this process is described in this paper. It may be useful for mining regions who will face a similar future sooner or later. (Kok 2017) According to the model of the product lifecycle, the global mining hard coal mining industry has reached the stagnation phase. (Kretschmann 2000) Although the coal mining business is more a multi-regional than a global business the trend is obvious. The peak of coal use is behind us, especially because the coal demand of China is slowly decreasing since 2013. (Shell 2018) China´s government has announced investing $360 billion in renewable energy by 2020 and scrap plans to build 85 coal-fired power plants. In March 2018, Chinese authorities reported that the country was already exceeding official targets for energy efficiency, carbon intensity, and the share of clean energy sources. China’s energy regulator, the National Energy Administration, rolled out new measures to reduce the country’s dependence on coal. (Kejun and Woetzel 2017) Coal consumption in the US is facing a 16 % decline in five years from 800 to 670 million short tons between 2015 and 2019 and - according to the EIA – will not rise again. (EIA 2018) The decline is attributed to complex market dynamics from low gas prices because of the “shale gas revolution” (Kok 2017, p. 3) to federal environmental regulation like the Clean Power Plan. The United Nations´ UNEP Finance Initiative is cooperating with the Portfolio Decarbonization Coalition of institutional investors to implement decarbonization strategies across their portfolio. Amongst these investors is the New York State Common Retirement Fund, the third largest public pension plan in the USA. Principally, mining natural resources is a finite business that reaches its limits once the deposits mined are depleted, the resources can no longer be mined in an economically profitable way or substitutes are pushing the mined products out of the market. An example of the latter is the increasing replacement of coal with natural gas and renewables in power generation in the United States [1]. According to the model of the product lifecycle, the global hard-coal mining industry has reached a stagnation phase [2]. The trend is obvious. Coal use peaked in 2013 [3], and the coal demand of China has been slowly decreasing since then [4]. Coal consumption in the United States saw a 16 percent decline from 726 Mt (800 million st) to 608 Mt (670 million st) between 2015 and 2019. In addition, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, it will not rise again [5]. The decline is attributed to complex market dynamics, from low gas prices because of the “shale gas revolution” [6] to federal environmental regulations like the Clean Power Plan. Moreover, important players like the United Nations and the European Union have already begun to describe pathways toward decarbonization. Increasing competition between coal-mining companies and the mining regions can be expected worldwide if companies want to keep their positions on the global and national coal markets. The White King / Lucky Lass Superfund site consists of two former uranium mines in south-central Oregon. The remedy included consolidating two large mining overburden stockpiles that contained low levels of radioactivity and heavy metals by moving over 700,000 cubic yards of material and then capping the combined stockpile. An innovative armored cap design was used to minimize the stockpile footprint and thereby prevent disturbing existing wetlands. In addition, the stockpile was designed to merge into the surrounding topography. The remedy also included stream restoration and development of new wetlands. The stream was returned to its pre-mining channel, with the addition of hydraulic features to create new wetlands. The wetlands have greatly enhanced the ecological value of the remedy and the site.

A comminution circuit in recent history, is one of the most difficult parts of a mineral processing plant to design with confidence. It is usually the most costly part of a plant to build, and it can consume up to half or more of the energy used on a mine site. To suggest that comminution energy usage is sustainable in the long term is not possible at this time. What we have to choose from today, based on more than 50 years of experience, does include the best available technology, and the best way to design it. There is controversy in the industry as to how to properly approach the subject of comminution design, with many of the optional solutions requiring a level of training and expertise beyond the ability of a non-specialist engineer. Semi-autogenous grinding technology in particular, has not been properly appreciated because of many recent mistakes in its application and design, which have blurred the positive perception about what SAG technology is, how it can be used, and how it needs to be designed and built. In order to change this, mine owners and senior managers need to take responsibility for, and learn to understand the fundamental challenges that a comminution circuit poses to the project, to the design process, to the operators who use the equipment, and to the resulting metallurgy. This address is intended to summarize these challenges and offer fundamental engineering solutions, which are clear, specific and in a format which is directly applicable to the mining and mineral engineering community.

In this study, a process integration approach in a primary steelmaking is investigated to evaluate future operation concepts of a steelmaking site considering sustainability issues. Mathematical programming is used to study the integration of the steel plant with chemical units for utilization of available off-gases in the system, and carbon capturing and sequestration unit. Different industrial carbon utilization options are considered to find the best route of development. A multi-period optimization model is developed based on site-wide mass and energy balances by considering the availability of the fuels and by-product gases and their consumption in the production system and a conceptual polygeneration system. The objective is to reach maximum economic profit while environmental aspects of integrated system are considered for different fuel systems, alternative blast furnace reductants and implementation of new process technologies. The model can provide useful information concerning techno-environmental and economic aspects for decision-making and can estimate optimal operational condition of current and future primary steelmaking under alternative scenarios. The results of the work illustrate the potential to develop steelmaking towards more sustainable operation in the future.

Fluid-bed technology is a key pyrometallurgical step for processing a vast number of ores and concentrates. Over the past 50 years, considerable research and development efforts have been made by Metso Outotec to expand the application window of this technology. This paper illustrates different processing routes where fluid-bed technology plays an important role in the production of the copper. The fluid-bed processes utilized are partial, sulfate-producing, and dead roasting. The focus of this paper considers the advantages of the dead-roasting process. This “zero waste” process can provide copper oxides, steam, electrical power, and sulfuric acid for new and existing solvent extraction–electrowinning plants. In a case where an operation is running out of oxidic ores and concentrates, fluid-bed roasting can be applied to close this gap and provide the required copper oxides in a sustainable way.

A new mining project can raise questions about what effect it will have on the community after it closes. Historically, little was done by communities to plan for and accommodate the changes in the economic infrastructure when a mine project is finished either after the ore runs out or if market conditions deteriorate and make it unprofitable. Projects that were underfunded were generally unable to withstand periodic market downturns. However, data in a recent study conducted by the Seidman Research Institute leads to the conclusion that, even when a mining project is terminated, there can be (and, in the specific case studied, is) a residual beneficial economic effect in the community, which lasts for a long period of time.

The Golden Sunlight Mine (GSM) began operation in 1982 with a strong commitment to environmental stewardship and the local community. This commitment ensured the long-term physical, chemical and ecological stability of the mine site and maintained an active partnership with local stakeholders. Concerns for economic development intensified as mine closure loomed on the horizon and fostered the inception of the Community Transition Advisory Committee(CTAC).This coalition of interested area stakeholders has the primary focus to sustain current mining operations while concurrently seeking alternative post-mine economic development opportunities utilizing existing mine assets. Accomplishments include development of an Asset Re-utilization and Post-closure Plan, a community survey regarding the impending mine closure, recruiting an international wind energy company to develop a wind farm, and development of an industrial/business park. The synergy of this strong partnership is key to meeting sustainability goals and enhancing potential future mining operations. The cooperative effort of the GSM and the local stakeholders is a success story that could be a role model for other mining operations.

The paper outlines the adoption and evolution of ‘sustainable development’ as a concept in tailings management practices in the mining industry over the last 30 years. Over 500 lives have been lost in tailings facility accidents since World War 2. The paper outlines commonalities in many of these accidents, particularly the role of excess water. It considers the role effective tailings management can play in enhancing the social acceptability of mining in the future.Tailings management is a major operating cost at many mines while the cost of successfully closing tailings facilities is also very high. Current tailings management practices in the industry are outlined. The technical and engineering challenges of reducing potential risks associated with tailings by reducing water entrainment are described. The successful development of practical techniques to better manage tailings and reduce water consumption and wastage are described. For example, water removal in the alumina industry to produce a paste for dry stacking is now a reality.The future adoption of these new risk reducing techniques by the industry is discussed and the implications of the adoption or non-adoption of these techniques on the industry’s future ‘social licence’ is considered.

The minerals industry has enormous potential to positively contribute to sustainable development and many leading companies have concluded that their long-term success is directly linked to their ability to leave a lasting positive legacy. While there are many examples of success, there have been failures as well and much work has been done in recent years to define the role of the minerals industry in sustainable development and identify the key elements for success. In the past, our sector could point to the taxes and royalties it paid, the exports it generated and employment it created and felt confident that its contribution would be recognised and duly acknowledged. This is no longer the case. Critics of the industry have highlighted resource-rich countries that have failed to capitalise on their resource wealth and have arguably lower standards of living than their resource-poor peers û the æresource curseÆ hypothesis. Recent research has done much to clarify the factors that contribute to a countryÆs success or failure and all stakeholders in the industry now need to include these learnings in their approaches going forward. We know that our long-term success relies on embedding a company- wide approach to sustainable development into all aspects of our business operations. In this paper we highlight BHP BillitonÆs experience in the development and implementation of policies and systems designed to enhance our contribution to sustainable development. We detail the business drivers for excellence in this area and the key external codes and initiatives that have shaped our approach. The values-based BHP Billiton Charter, Sustainable Development Policy and associated Health, Safety, Environment and Community (HSEC) Management Standards are central to our approach. Implementation is reviewed through our HSEC audit program. One area in which we have placed particular emphasis is our approach to community development. BHP Billiton has a corporate target to contribute one per cent of its pre-tax profit on a three year rolling average to voluntary community programs. As our profit stream has increased with the minerals boom this is approaching an A$100 million commitment. In our paper we detail how we are working to ensure we maximise the value of this contribution for our communities and our shareholders.

This paper illustrates sustainability considerations in copper hydrometallurgy using examples of practices at ASARCO LLC, an integrated U.S. primary copper producer. Using the classic Brundtland Commission development of sustainable development, i.e., “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs,” the paper discusses how copper hydrometallurgical processes can be sustainable.
