A computer program has been written to simulate ground vibrations induced by multiple- hole surface blasts. The program is an inexpensive and relatively easy to use tool for predicting the principal blast vibration characteristics that determine damage and annoyance potential: peak particle velocity, frequency content and pulse duration. The program generates a complete ground motion history by superposing, at any surface position, the vibrations induced by each individual explosive charge. It requires specification of (hence allows accounting for) the blast geometry, initiation sequence (including random delays), position with respect to blast, pulse characteristics induced by each charge, and propagation laws. A methodology is outlined to determine the necessary variables either on the basis of site investigations (e.g.,velocity, attenuation, single-hole input pulse), or by back-calculation from measured blast vibration records. The latter procedure has been applied to blasts from two coal strip mines. Main difficulties encountered are backcalculating individual input pulses, propagation (especially dispersion) parameters and delays. A normal distribution of delays, based on published results, has been shorn to influence the results and the response of a single degree of freedom structure significantly. Broadening of the wave types included, improved input pulse determination and propagation laws, and more detailed verifications with field results are required in order to make the program more directly applicable to practical situations.

Detailed monitoring of the response of the rock mass between rockbolt reinforcement units subjected to a simulated seismic source has been successfully conducted. This work has shown the increase in amplification of the Peak Particle Velocity (PPV) with distance from a rock bolt unit, and, a minimum PPV for rockburst damage for the given site characteristics. This understanding, at this site, will allow the design of a suitable rock bolt spacing to prevent unravelling of the rock mass between the rock bolt units for a given level of seismicity. Or, alternatively, an estimation of the requirement for a suitable fabric support system, for the anticipated level of seismicity, can be made.

A blast was engineered close to a tunnel in a deep-level mine with the purpose of studying the wave interaction with the tunnel. Numerical modelling of seismic wave propagation was used in both the forward planning and the back-analysis of this experiment. This paper presents the forward analysis. A likely model for a propagating blast was investigated and developed. This model predicts the influence of the velocity of detonation of the blast and the rise-time of the blast on the radiation pattern, and hence on the expected positions of maximum velocity at the tunnel surface. An attempt was made to quantify the parameters of the blast model, using waveform data from two other blast experiments. The blast model caused particle velocities which were an order of magnitude lower than these measured velocities. Large values for blast pressure were required to match the amplitudes of the recorded velocities. An alternative ?effective? source with a similar mechanism but increased diameter was proposed to account for the higher velocities. It was established that distant velocities scale with the square of the borehole diameter. A calibration blast at the experimental site was also modelled. Agreement in the waveforms was not sufficient for conclusive statements to be made about the validity of the source model. However, the modelled waveforms show an encouraging correspondence with some measured waveforms. This gave confidence that the model could be used to examine wave propagation around the tunnel, and allowed a scaled source to be developed for forward analysis of the main experiment.

System simulation is an increasingly popular technique for analyzing and improving existing as well as newly designed underground mining operations. An engineering firm that specializes in simulation helped a major metals producer build a long-range planning model of an existing underground mine. Subsequently the team adapted this model to assess technology alternatives in the design of a new mine. The two models differ in the level of detail used for modeling the development process. This paper discusses the differences in approach between the models along with the experiences gained and challenges faced during the construction and use of the models.

Quenching and aging are critical processing steps used to produce precipitation hardenable aluminum alloy products. This work describes personal computer programs that employ models to predict certain properties after quenching and aging and graphically display them. One of the programs allows the user to predict the attainable strength and toughness of aluminum alloy products after an arbitrary quench. Another program simulates the changes in strength and electrical conductivity occurring during second-step aging alloy 7050-T7X products as a function of thickness, furnace temperature set point, and furnace characteristics.

Open pit mine enterprises are complex systems that depend on multiple parameters such as mineral grade distribution, geotechnical characteristics, economic conditions and engineering requirements, all of which vary in time and space with a different degree of uncertainty. The unpredictable nature of these inputs imposes a risk to mine owners and shareholders which in the worst case can lead to highly undesirable financial outcomes.Desktop studies commonly examine a set of scenarios based on adjusting variables such as commodity prices, mining costs, processing costs, and metal recoveries to understand their relative impact on the economics of a project. It is less common to systematically explore and simulate hundreds of alternative physical designs to understand and compare the financial risk associated with one or more mining projects.This paper presents a risk assessment tool set and methodology that uses web based cloud computing to enable multiple simulations of mine designs to be rapidly and efficiently executed. The methodology includes generating random sets of prices and costs values within their respective probability distributions. Pit designs are then created to maximise the profit for each set of input variables. Various approaches to analysing the results are discussed. Use of the same high performance computing environment for understanding the financial risk associated with the variability of the underlying geological resource model is also discussed, with provided examples using case studies from two of the major mineral producers.CITATION:Lima, E, Gregory, D, Lapworth, A and Faria, C, 2014. In mining, water management is an operational necessity, requiring planning and detailed engineering, as well as risk assessment. Yet, the hydrology of streams and aquifers typically extends well beyond the boundaries of mine operations and intersect with environmental and social values. Mine managers often plan, design and assess the impact of water management activities (such as dewatering, excess water disposal and flood management) with a mine site or process specific focus. The challenge is that the impacts are spatial, long-term and complex – and may be cumulative across multiple mine sites. Further, there is usually little consideration of the feedbacks and interactions between surface water, groundwater and catchment hydrology. Failure to understand these processes can lead to poor decisions and increased costs. This presentation outlines an approach to simulating integrated hydrology in mining catchments that addresses the shortcomings of traditional modelling techniques.CITATION:Graham, D N and Szylkarski, S, 2016. In this study we explore the use of a novel numerical modelling approach to study the effect of pillar reinforcement on pillar stability. Case studies in the literature indicate that tendons, strapping of the pillars, and shotcrete or thin spray-on liners are commonly used to reinforce pillars. No clear methodology exists to select the type of support or to design the capacity of the support required, however. This has led to ongoing collapses in some mines in spite of heavy support being used to reinforce unstable pillars. A limit equilibrium model with confinement on the edge of the pillar was used to simulate the interaction of the support with the failing pillar. The model correctly predicts that an increase in confinement will lead to a decrease in the extent of pillar failure. As the displacement discontinuity boundary element method allows for the efficient solution of largescale bord-and-pillar layouts, the effect of pillar confinement can now be studied on a mine-wide scale. Accurate calibration of the limit equilibrium model is, however, required before this method can be used for the design of effective pillar support.

"This paper presents a phenomenological model of the rate of iron(III) precipitation in batch and continuous autoclaves at medium temperature operating conditions. The rate expressions are based on information obtained from the literature and experimentation at low and high pulp densities. Special allowance is made for the formation of surface nuclei, which appears to be promoted at a higher iron(III) precipitate surface area, especially in suspensions of lower terminal acidity. This leads to the formation of secondary particulates and provides the required link to simulate high pulp density leaching-precipitation systems, using low pulp density batch precipitation data. In particular, the model allows direct application of the simulation to the autoclave oxidation of iron-containing copper sulfide concentrates and provides a good estimation of the relative precipitation rate of hematite, the preferred product, compared to hydronium jarosite. Some interesting mechanistic understandings of iron(III) precipitation in autoclaves are further elucidated.INTRODUCTIONThe objective of this work is to describe the rate of iron(III) precipitation and the relative amounts of hematite compared to hydronium jarosite precipitation during batch and continuous chalcopyrite oxidation under medium temperature (MT) (~130 to 160ºC) autoclave conditions. Published information has not yet revealed sufficient mechanistic insights about this sparingly soluble salt system under these conditions. The rate expressions in this paper are based in part on current literature information, supplemented by qualitative experimental observation at low pulp density conditions, in particular the high-resolution backscatter electron (BSE) images and particle size distributions (PSDs) of the precipitates. A summary of this work and insights from the literature are presented first, after which the behaviour of iron(III) in high pulp density leaching systems is used to derive a phenomenological expression of the effect of existing iron(III) precipitate surface area on the precipitation rate. The overall regression encapsulates all the experimental results, i.e., those obtained in both batch and continuous autoclave configurations (Steyl, 2012a)."

Mechanical sampling from conveyors has historically been a staple in the iron ore industry when information related to chemistry, sizing and moisture is required. In order to comply with ISO 3082:2009, samples can be taken either on a mass or time basis provided no bias is introduced by periodical variation in quality or quantity. With the introduction of mechanical sample carousels, you also have the opportunity to collect samples on a mass or time basis. In order to optimise automatic sample stations in a changing production environment, BHP Billiton Iron Ore (BHPBIO) has developed a simulation model that enables the various combinations of mass–mass, mass–time, time–time and time–mass to be investigated.The sample station model can utilise actual (variable) feed rates to achieve high resolution and enables the simulation of sample size variation. Cutter speeds and other settings can then be adjusted to better optimise the performance of the sample station with regards to optimal sample size as well as ensuring the sample station is in compliance with ISO 3082. The model can also assist process engineers in adjusting settings to better optimise the sample station and reduce unwanted events such as blockages. The model can be easily modified to conform to various sample station designs. Open access to forecasts of mine geotechnical performance in the form of open databases of model results has been considered risky in the past, with a concern that the results will not be understood or will be misused. However, some modelling techniques allow very high similitude modelling of mine deformation and the results can be presented as deformation, damage and other parameters which are unambiguous and which all engineers can be more easily trained to understand. With some effort, sufficient reliability and quantifications of error are possible to overcome many of the issues.Allowing more members of the planning team to have direct access to forecasts of mine deformation will promote awareness of geotechnical issues and will act as a mechanism for improving mine designs. The models will also be more easily integrated into quality assurance programs, by providing a framework for understanding measurement results.The sufficiency requirements for undertaking simulation aided mining engineering will be presented, included some conclusions about requirements for training, quality standards and software development.

Three transportation and handling alternatives for delivering dry coal combustion residues from power plants to underground coal mines were evaluated technically and economically. The objective was to transport, handle, and inject the residues into the old workings of the mine at a minimum cost. This objective was accomplished in two steps: I) Simulation models were developed and utilized in identifying technically feasible designs in each alternative, 2) Technically feasible designs were economically evaluated to obtain the cost-per-ton of material transported. The designs that provided the minimum cost-per-ton were declared optimal An analysis was conducted for varying distances and tonnages to reveal favorable operating ranges of each alternative.

In the planning phase of every construction project, layout of temporary facilities is a crucial task; site layout can affect safety, travel cost and time, construction productivity, and space utilization. However, site layout planning can be a complicated problem, due to the interdependency of influencing factors. Although interaction among activities is one of the major drivers of site layout planning, it has not been properly addressed in past research. In this study, simulation is presented as a promising tool to address this gap. The capability of simulation technology to model complex processes in construction projects makes use of simulation tools in site layout optimization problems effective, while existing methods are unable to perfectly model these problems, in some cases. Additionally, the advantages and challenges of implementing simulation are assessed and a generic framework for simulation application in site layout planning is proposed.

For many years, optimising the relining of hard rock grinding mills has been complicated by: ?? the large number of variables; ?? the low frequency of relines (slow feedback loop); ?? the potential economic risk associated with some changes. A technology that has its roots in the automotive manufacturing industry is being utilised to construct a statistically accurate, configurable, and dynamic simulation of the mill relining process. The effects of various mechanisation and process changes can be rapidly modelled and compared. This technology will provide mill maintenance managers and contract relining companies with the opportunity to benchmark current performance against world?s best practice. It will also provide an opportunity for concentrator plant designers and mill manufacturers to plan for maximum plant efficiency, by designing an infrastructure and equipment combination that maximises annual plant availability. This simulation tool and its associated data set, has been developed using recent grinding mill performance data from mills of varying dimensions, liner configurations, mill relining equipment, operator and tool variables. The simulation will provide an output that the various stakeholders can utilise to make optimal decisions within the given financial, physical and technological constraints of the individual concentrator plant.

A United Nations (UN) administered degasification technology transfer project, funded by the Global Environmental Fund (GEF) is underway at the Shihao Mine of the Songzao Coal Mining Ad- ministration in the province of Sichuan, Peoples Republic of China. This mine exploits multiple seams at depths ranging from 300 to 600 m below surface. In-seam boreholes and frequently spaced in-mine vertical boreholes, developed from underlying galleries constructed specifically for this purpose, currently degasify the seams in advance of mining at the Shihao Mine. Because of ventilation system constraints and the in-situ gas con- tent, longwall mining of the coals at this mine could not proceed without some form of pre-mining degasification. This paper presents a simulation based degasification plan of long, in-seam horizontal boreholes for the Shihao Mine. Simulations with a coalbed reservoir program assessed time dependent degasification characteristics of both vertical and in-seam horizontal boreholes. The simulations used input data from reservoir and desorption tests conducted at the mine site. The results produced system design nomograms to assist mine engineers in defining the appropriate borehole spacing necessary to degasify the seam in the time available for pre-mining drainage. The predicted effectiveness of the current vertical degasification scheme was compared with that for a horizontal borehole program and served as the basis for the recommended in-seam borehole configuration for the project at the Shihao Mine. The horizontal borehole degasification program requires substantially less gallery and borehole development than the present vertical degasification scheme.

A team of researchers at the University of Kentucky, working under a USBM contract, developed over 65 simulation exercises for teaching and testing problem-solving and decision-making skills to miners and mining engineers. These skills involve both improving judgment and decision making in mine emergencies and enhancing the learning of real-world engineering design principles. The exercises are ideally suited for either latent image format or for computer-aided instruction. Exercise features are summarized, the structure and field testing of typical exercises described, and sample frames of individual exercises presented. Empirical data are summarized that describe the effectiveness of using these short, time-efficient performance tasks that simulate real problems and that provide immediate corrective feedback for teaching and testing critical skills. "Robex Resources interrupted production at the Nampala Mine in September 2014 following throughput and gold recovery results which were below expectations during the first months of operation. After a thorough plant audit, an important brainstorming took place in order to identify an economical path to resume production. It was clearly identified that a significant investment was necessary at the concentrator prior to restarting the plant, namely the addition of a ball mill and a new elution system.The mineral processing simulation software USIM PAC was used in order to simulate the grinding circuit in design. The simulations’ outputs allowed the ball mill characteristics and the surrounding classification devices to be designed with more accuracy. Many ball mills available from second hand retailers were therefore studied in the simulated circuit. The chosen ball mill, which was in perfect condition, had the advantage of being available for rapid delivery on site.The paper first describes the ball mill sizing method in comparison with the conventional Allis Chalmers method. It then describes the phase 2 concentrator start-up (that took place in 2016) with the commissioning of the ball mill, the classification circuit, the gravity concentration, the four (4) new carbon-in-leach (CIL) tanks, and the Zadra elution system (The phase 1 start-up took place in 2014). It finally provides production data compared to expected simulation data, as commercial production was reached in January 2017.IntroductionDesigning a new concentrator or new equipment within an existing concentrator requires significant efforts to identify possible bottlenecks and their causes (i.e. limiting equipment or sectors) and accurate sizing of major equipment can have a tremendous impact on the economy of the whole project. In the presented case study, the ball mill was the critical equipment and oversizing it could have brought the Capex to a level where the project would not have gone through. Inversely, undersizing the mill could have resulted in lower production and therefore no economic viability for the project once it is in operation.During engineering studies, equipment sizing often relies on a static mass balance and one-by-one sizing of all pieces of equipment. The sizing is then left to the equipment manufacturer or in the case of mills, evaluated with empirical models mostly relying on the Bond equations (Allis Chalmers method) [Rowland and Kjos, 1978]. This methodology shows the disadvantage of not considering interaction between equipment in a mineral processing circuit, especially when recirculation occurs. Also, it has the disadvantage of not using the more advanced grinding models that include the use of the whole particle size distribution as well as phenomenological components by only using limited parameters in the ore particle size distribution (i.e. the P80). This can be explained by the lack of data that sometimes needs to be gathered in order to tune the more advanced models but also by the conservative mindset in mineral concentration engineering which does not always favor the use of process simulation. In many aspects of process engineering, Soutex has demonstrated its affinity to using simulation in order to size equipment with more accuracy, consider process variability, simulate complex systems, and study supply chain management (Berton et al., 2015)."

Cliffs Natural Resources Pty Ltd (CNR) operates iron ore mines in the Koolyanobbing region of Western Australia, about 50 km north of the town of Southern Cross. Ore is trucked from three geographically isolated sources to the crusher at Koolyanobbing, where it is blended before and during crushing. Lump and fines products are produced and railed to Esperance for ship loading and export to Asian customers. CNR is examining alternative processing paths, from mining to ship loading, with the aim of improving efficiency and reducing costs. Modifications to the system must be consistent with potential future expansions and maintain the low inter-shipment grade variability on which CNR prides itself and has built a strong relationship with its customers. In searching for the optimum process design, many options from mine face to ship loading must be evaluated and compared. Pilot plant studies are infeasible, while complex mineralogical interactions, competing goals and numerous possible system configurations limit the applicability of theoretical analysis. It was therefore concluded that simulation modeling would provide the confidence to take the next step into production trials. This paper describes techniques applied at CNR to simulate grade variability resulting from potential process design changes. The simulation models are easily run Excel-based modules, with each module representing a different part of the process. The modules use extensive Visual Basic macros driven by Excel's user-friendly interfaces. Presentation of the results is enhanced by Excel's excellent graphical capabilities. The simulation software stores and graphically presents time-stamped data from a run, enabling detailed analysis of different process configurations. Final success of a simulation run is measured by inter-shipment variability (standard deviation and process capability) and in-process ore tonnages. Meaningful results from the simulations require the initial input data contain the same correlations present in the real production environment, between the mineral components, production linkages and across time. The data also have to allow simulation of potential changes to mining method and introduction of new pits into the blend. Mining data from the real operations under study are therefore used, with average grades and variability adjusted to match potential future development proposals. It is also necessary to filter out medium and long-term variations from the production data as this variability is best controlled through the conventional medium to long-term mine planning process, not by the process design being studied. The filtering was carried out using a Fourier transform technique, which is described.

This paper discusses the requirements for a successful simulation modelling study, and the steps involved in the modelling process. Advantages and disadvantages of simulation are described, and a case study highlights how not to go about it. Two other case studies, for a decline truck haulage and a block caving production operation, are used to illustrate the types of variables whose impact may be investigated. Typical results are presented to indicate the sorts of presentation styles the author has found useful for conveying study results to project sponsors. Standard spreadsheet charting techniques can be very useful in this respect, but the possibilities are limited only by the imagination of the study team.
