To meet increasing demand of coal, underground mining is largely being replaced by the exploitation at deeper horizons and with greater complexities. The exploitation-proposition may be below not-to-be-disturbed surface properties or below water-bodies, posing a constant threat of inundation. Also, the mounting pressures to limit the adverse impacts on the environment bring the extraction-undertaking to face more challenges. An understanding of subsidence-mechanism and a rational quantification of subsidence parameters is a requisite herein. This paper presents such pragmatic quantification, validated at mine-sites in India. In comparison, better productivity, conservation and safety is ensured in this approach.

The seismic refraction technique is probably the most popular geophysical method of bedrock profiling in geotechnical site investigations but is somewhat restricted by the inherent assumptions in the method. This paper describes how Hales' method of profile interpretation is modified to overcome the assumptions of increasing velocity and layer thickness with depth when only first arrival data is available. A further expansion of Hales method enables presentation of refraction data in a form whereby bedrock features, such as changes in velocity, relief and dip in particular, are more readily recognized. Characteristic curves of the more common bedrock features are presented as an aid to bedrock feature recognition.

This paper deals with some aspects of concrete construction in remote locations and/or cold climates. The writer's experience covers 25 years in construction in western and Central Canada. I will bring forth some pertinent observations and cost facts learned from this experience. Let us start by saying that there is nothing more important than preplanning the entire project. By this I mean the production of the engineering design, working drawings, soliciting of prices and ordering of all equipment and contractors work, the delivery of all equipment and all onsite work. All of this should be placed on a master schedule, preferably a C.P.M. We have been using C.P M. Scheduling for all of our work for 5 years and have found it in-valuable. This preliminary schedule will show initial items of work and target dates. After main equipment orders are placed and deliveries confirmed, the construction schedule can be revised to include manpower and construction equipment requirements. From this information the size of camp is determined. This, of course, must be ordered several months ahead. The manpower schedule can be broken into trades to tell us the number of men of each trade required at any time. This is important in helping to determine where the men must come from and whether or not any incentive is needed to get them. The schedule will also point out if it is impossible to get the project closed in before winter becomes too severe unless overtime is worked or the project is started in early spring. In most parts of Canada cold weather starts in October and lasts through April. A common term of reference has been to wait for the frost to come out of the ground before starting work in the spring. The current level of environmental statutes and regulations, and the legal/liability considerations, has evolved through regulatory enactment of mine reclamation laws and other existing environmental laws, such as the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA). Management tools and techniques to limit risk exposure and financial losses should be employed as an active measure throughout the mine life, including closure and post-closure.

Over the last three years there has been an increase in mining congress and conferences focusing on water management. Water in mining is a key concern for mine managers and operations, and we are now seeing this operational dilemma escalated to the level it deserves. According to Frost & Sullivan research, mining water and wastewater treatment and its related technologies will be a U$3.6 Billion global market in 2016, which translates the importance of this issue. Looking at the current mining trends, some factors increased the importance of water in mining operations, including: ? Future mining investments will be located in geographical locations where water is scarce (water stressed areas) ? A decline in grade will increase the intensity of mineral processes and therefore increase the use of the water ? Increased sustainability and regulations will extend the control/monitoring of water during the entire mine life cycle representation of the mine water flow system. The San Manuel Oxide Pit is located within the subsidence boundaries of Magma Copper Company's block caving operation. Ground conditions offer a constant blasting challenge and vary from hard, competent crystalline rock to widely spaced fracturing in a sedimentary conglomerate. A successful drilling and blasting program has undergone several changes since mining commenced in 1985 and continues to be developed. This paper discusses the site specific progress made with the drilling and blasting program from selection of feasibility parameters to current practice. Topics discussed include controlled blasting, use Of high energy blasting agents, charge decking, blast casting, as well as standard drill and blast techniques.

In subterranean mining operations, access to communication networks deep underground is critical for transporting data, voice and video, and other supporting applications that are essential for efficient and safe operations. Whether accessing sophisticated ERP or maintenance management systems, engaging in fleet management, video surveillance, or access control, or protecting miners with wireless locator systems, these networks serve as a literal lifeline between workers deep within mines and surface operations. For this, mining networks require more than permanently installed network cabling, it also requires unique deployable systems designed for quick installation, extension and even relocation as the active mine site area moves, or equipment is moved in and out.

The Bureau of Mines, U. S. Department of the Interior, has developed a method of dewatering clay slurries based on flocculation by high-molecular-weight polymers and water removal from the formed flocs using a trommel or hydrosieve. The exchange ion on the clays affects their dewaterability. Metal ions in solution and on the exchange sites of smectite clays are known to act as Lewis acids. Recent work has determined that these ions can be titrated with high-molecular-weight polymers. The relative acidity of the exchange ion and the basicity of the polymer determined by the new method give insight into the dewatering mechanism.

BHP Iron Ore initiated research programs in January of 1995 to develop long term plans for decommissioning of the waste rock material at their Mt. Whaleback operation. More than 2 billion tonnes of waste rock were deposited during the past 30 years. Ultimately, the operators will deposit a total of approximately 5 billion tonnes in waste rock dumps constructed near the open pit. The Mt. Whaleback operation is located in a semi-arid climate adjacent to Newman, Western Australia, approximately 1200km north-northeast of Perth, Western Australia. The primary research program includes the development of technology for the long term performance of the waste rock dumps with respect to vegetation, slope stability, surface runoff, erosion, and water infiltration. This paper focuses on the design and implementation of a cover system to prevent water infiltration to the underlying waste rock. A laboratory program and the soil-atmosphere modelling completed to design the horizontal field test plots are described. The construction of the horizontal surface field test plots are discussed together with the field instruments installed to monitor performance. The key components of the instrumentation program are the design and installation of large scale field lysimeters to measure the unsaturated flow of moisture into the waste rock from the base of the cover layer. The cover system is designed to maximize infiltration during wet periods for subsequent evapo-transpiration while minimizing surface runoff. The result is a near zero net infiltration to the underlying waste material. A key feature of the design is the use of pit run waste material as the cover material. Monitoring is in progress and will continue for at least two annual wet/dry cycles. The optimum cover system should minimize the net infiltration of water to the underlying waste rock while maintaining physical and ecological integrity for long term performance.

"Although global mineral resources are considered to be adequate to meet the needs of a rapidly growing world population, the United States is becoming increasingly dependent on imports. This could have implications for both the economy and national security. The US is a country with a strong tradition of leadership in science and technology. Impressive advances in autonomous underground mining systems reduce the adverse effects of heat and humidity in deep mines and focus renewed attention on ground control. Developments in computing power open opportunities to develop improved understanding of the important role of discontinuities (faults and fracture systems) and more effective design of deep excavations. Establishment of mining R&D Centers at leading US research universities, jointly funded by industry and US federal agencies is recommended as an effective step for the nation to remain an influential partner in world mining. INTRODUCTION. “None of the arts is older than agriculture, but that of metals is no less ancient.. . for no mortal man ever tilled a field without implements. If we remove metals from the service of man, all methods of protecting and sustaining health and more carefully preserving the course of life are done away with.” Agricola (1558)i Homo sapiens, generally acknowledged as the species from which modern Man has evolved, is considered to have originated in Swaziland some 100,000-200,000 years ago. Evidence of use of minerals in that region has been dated to earlier than 40,000 BC.ii Today, a large fraction of the elements of the Periodic Table are derived from minerals, and finding new applications in development of innovative technologies. Agricola’s comments are as applicable today as ever.iii Metals such as copper, tin, lead, iron and aluminum were mined and smelted several thousands of years BC. It was not until the Industrial Revolution, started in the latter half of the 17th Century in Northern England, where coal was available as an energy source, and iron as the basis for fabricating machinery, that dramatic change to society began to occur. Human toil was replaced by far more powerful machines. Rural communities migrated to work in factories in urban areas. Rapid transportation over long distances became possible, leading eventually to the world of today. The change spread to other parts of the world, bringing wealth and power. Although now well established in some regions, the Revolution has still to arrive in many other parts of the world. This can be seen in Figure 1, which shows the relative wealth, or ‘Standard of Living’ as measured by the GDP/capita, of regions around the world. Regions such as North America, Europe, and Australasia iv are seen to have the highest standard. Thanks to today’s global communications systems, regions with relatively low GDP/capita are well aware of ‘how others live’ – and eager to emulate them."

Although blasting remains the most inexpensive method of fragmentation in hardrock mining, the significance of the costs of blast-induced rockmass damage in terms of mining efficiency and safety is becoming increasingly recognized. There is no straightforward and systematic method of adequately measuring blast damage in on-going mining operations. This paper considers various techniques available to measure blast damage, making particular reference to recent underground hardrock mine studies. It concludes by proposing a damage audit procedure for integration into routine mine production control.

Research was conducted to develop a simulation and animation model for an aggregate (sand and gravel) mine operation. This model can assist the mine engineers to investigate and consider the various options of haulage systems which are critical for the mine operation productivity. Discrete-event system simulation studies can be used for the typical haulage issues that mining engineers are often faced with: using truck fleet haulage, conveyor belts, or a combination of both. The simulation has identified some strengths and weaknesses in the current loading and hauling fleet of the mine, and has resulted in some suggestions for improving the system. The simulation includes animation of the operation. Animation is needed to enhance the benefit of any mine simulation model. By combining the visual power of animation with a mine simulation, a complete picture of the mine system is obtained and displayed. The mine is modeled and animated using GPSS/H® and PROOF Professional®, both of which have shown great applicability in discrete mining simulation projects.

Underground mining of limestone is becoming increasingly attractive in Illinois. Most quarries are near rivers on the western and southern borders where competition for land use is intensive. Increasing demands for stone can be met by expanded mining with access by edits in existing quarries and by inclines and shafts at downdip sites. Geologic, hydrologic, and engineering conditions indicate that deep mines in the Ste. Genevieve, St. Louis, Salem, Ullin, and basal Burlington Limestones of Mississippian age and in the Moredock Limestone Member of the Dunleith Formation of Ordovician age are possible, but development will require prudent exploration and planning to ensure that the product will be of good quality.

Semisoluble salt minerals are characterized by their ionic bonding and are distinguished from soluble salt minerals by their limited solubility in water. One group of semisoluble salt minerals being considered is the alkaline earth salt minerals, including fluorite (CaF2), calcite (CaCO3) and apatite (Ca5F (PO4)3), as well as celestite (SrSO4) and barite (BaSO4). Another group of semisoluble salt minerals being considered is the rare-earth salts, which include bastnaesite ((Ce, La) CO3F), monazite (CePO4) and xenotime (YPO4). Surface chemistry features of these selected semisoluble salt minerals are discussed with respect to flotation separations. First, the surface chemistry features of alkaline earth semisoluble salt minerals are reviewed, and then the surface chemistry features of rare-earth semisoluble salt minerals are examined. The discussion includes electrokinetic behavior, wetting characteristics and collector adsorption.

In this paper, the author will briefly discuss how the System works and how it can be put to use in automatic grinding circuit control. Throughout, detailed consideration will be given to the many factors that can significantly influence how successful a specific application is.

Despite several methods (empirical, statistical and machine-learning tools) to calculate blast-induced ground vibration, it is not easy to predict and simulate blast vibration precisely under varying blasting loads and strata conditions due to complications in the blasting procedure. In this study, field blast data were simulated in Ansys software using explicit dynamics, and ground vibrations for 20 single-hole blasts were monitored. The densities of emulsion explosives were in the range of 0.9 to 1.15 g/cm3. In the laboratory, rock properties were determined from rock samples collected from the mine site before blasting. The in-hole velocity of detonation (VoD) and density of the emulsion explosive were also determined and used in numerical analysis to know the ground vibrations at specific points. The results of ground vibrations predicted by the model were validated using field data.

Hibbing Taconite Company is located by the cities of Hibbing and chisholm near the center of the Mesabi Range, approximately 169 km (105 miles) from the Canadian Border. The plant site is equidistant from these two communities, about 6.4 km (4 miles) from each. A 169 km (105 mile) railroad connects us with the port of Superior, Wisconsin, where the pellet production is loaded into lake carriers for lower lakes destinations. Immediately to the south of the mine area is the world famous Hull- Rust-Mahoning Mine which produced more than 700 000 000 million tons of red ore between the years 1893 and 1973.

"Automated Mineralogy (AM) is an important diagnostic tool in flotation plants as it adds ore and particle mineralogical properties to traditional mass and chemical data. AM is used in project development, for future ore studies and for diagnosing concentrator operations. With the exception of operations who own central laboratory or on-site systems, the use of AM is often limited to the analysis of a comparatively small set of samples. Metrix Plant Technologies has partnered with TESCAN to integrate TIMA AM technology into the implementation of Performance Assessment Campaigns (PAC). Routine daily composite samples from the mill are analysed mineralogically on a size-by-size basis over several weeks. All the relevant metallurgical, process control and mineralogical data is combined into a single large database for mass balancing and interactive examination. This paper describes the implementation and results of a PAC at the Agnico Eagle Kittilä gold mine in Finland. Although challenging, the addition of mineralogical data as dependent variables in multivariate analysis leads to a much deeper understanding of the root cause effect of events driving the flotation performance. INTRODUCTION TO STUDY The Kittilä mine, owned by Agnico Eagle, is Europe’s largest primary gold mine, with annual production of approximately 180,000 Oz. The operation is located in Lapland in northern Finland, and is currently expected to operate until 2035. The location of the operation is shown in Figure 1. Historically, the mine was an open pit, although in recent years ore is sourced solely from underground operations. The processing plant features crushing and grinding, followed by carbon flotation and sulphide flotation. Carbon concentrate is a waste stream, and sulphide concentrate reports to pressure oxidation (autoclave) and CIL circuits for gold extraction. The final flowsheet is shown in Figure 2. Following commissioning in late 2008, the operation achieved commercial production on May 1st 2009. Gold recovery in flotation gradually increased to a 92-96% range at a throughput of ~3500-4000 tonnes per day. In late 2014, the operation commissioned a plant expansion to ~5000 tonnes per day. Following a commissioning period, the operation stabilised with recoveries in a 90-94% range, which over any given period was determined to be ~2% lower with statistical significance. The trends from start-up of gold recovery in flotation and throughput are shown as follows in Figure 3. In early 2016, Agnico Eagle Kittilä mine, along with Agnico Eagle Technical Services (AETS) partnered with Metrix Plant Technologies and TESCAN, to perform a Performance Assessment Campaign (PAC) at Kittilä, involving automated mineralogy on five key streams at Kittilä on 40 days selected from a 50 day period between February 15th and April 4th 2016, when plant operations were stable. In addition to the mineralogical data, metallurgical and operational data were pooled into a single, powerful database to explore opportunities for the operation to improve recovery in a sustained manner, ideally to the levels pre-expansion."

Slope stability analysis plays an integral role in the design of various mining applications including waste dumps, heap leach piles, solution ponds, and tailings dams. Generally, limit equilibrium analysis using one of the several prevalent approaches is considered adequate. The density, saturation, and shear strength parameters of the materials forming the slope affect the failure mode and the calculated factor of safety (FS) against sliding. These parameters are generally based on laboratory tests. Field practices and construction procedures are often not completely simulated in the laboratory for various reasons (e.g. equipment limits, time and budget restraints, etc.). This paper presents a holistic assessment of slope stability analysis as practiced in mining applications, using example data from multiple heap leach projects. A sensitivity analysis is presented for variations in material properties, data interpretation, and computation methods. For each step in the design process, the possible variations in parameter values were identified and then used to perform traditional and probabilistic stability analyses. This simple, cradle-to-grave-type approach is used to evaluate the reliability of an example design, and the combined impact of multiple uncertainties on the factor of safety. Example Study The issue of addressing uncertainty in geotechnical design has been discussed in depth by numerous authors (Duncan 2000; Christian 2004; Whitman 1984; Christian et al. 1993). One may ignore the uncertainties involved in a design, take a conservative approach, rely on observational methods (Peck 1969), or attempt to quantify the uncertainty. Geotechnical projects in general, may include a combination of these methods. For important structures, such as heap leach pads, it is critical that sources of uncertainty in the stability analysis be acknowledged early on and considered in the overall design approach. As with any project, economics and other physical constraints, such as space limitation, often do not always allow for an overly-conservative, robust design. In an effort to quantify uncertainty and provide a sense of level of confidence in the safety and reliability of a design, probabilistic methods have been developed and implemented in many slope stability software packages. Reliability methods are often used in the design of open pit mine slopes, but not as commonly in designing heap leach pads and waste dumps. As an example, the stability analysis of a copper heap leach project is presented here to evaluate the effects of multiple sources of uncertainty and differing methods of data interpretation. Some of the parametric values, or the variation therein, are assumed on the basis of actual data from multiple heap leach projects, included in the paper as well. A generic representation of the example case study is shown in Figure 1. As depicted in the cross-section, the ultimate height of the design is 114 m (measured from the crest to the toe). The overall slope of the heap leach pad is 1.88 horizontal to 1 vertical (1.88H:1V), or 28°. The slope benches are considered in the overall slope. The example leach pad is founded on alluvial, colluvial and residual soils overlying weathered limestone. The ore to be placed on the pad is characterized as poorly graded gravel (GP) with average fines content (percent passing #200 sieve) of 4%. The liner subgrade is low permeability (fine) soil. The cover or the drainage material, placed directly above the geomembrane (between the liner and the ore), is crushed ore in this case. The phreatic surface was assumed to be 1 m above the base liner, which is what the collection system over the liner is typically designed for. [ ] In heap leach pads, typically, Linear Low Density Polyethylene (LLDPE) or High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) is used as the base liner. The decision is based on the elongation, strength and other requirements of the application as well as economic considerations. In this example study, the base liner was 80-mil single-side textured LLDPE. FIELD INVETIGATION AND SAMPLING When selecting appropriate values for the input parameters of the stability analysis, the level of uncertainty in the data and the assumptions that are made must be clearly identified and considered in the design. This concept has been emphasized through an extensive number of publications regarding geotechnical uncertainty and reliability (Christian et al. 1994; Duncan 2000; Christian 2004). The primary source of uncertainties involved in slope stability analysis for mining applications is inadequate geotechnical investigation, often lacking in a thorough assessment of in-situ material characterization and sampling disturbances. To emphasize this point, some background information is presented here. The tradeoff between the costs of a thorough site investigation versus the risks of design uncertainty has long been a challenging management decision in geotechnical projects. For mine sites, significant investment is typically made in exploration and estimating mineral resources and the geology of a mine site is often more thoroughly documented than other types of geotechnical projects. Nevertheless, the engineering properties of the soil and rocks relevant to slope stability receive less emphasis. Baecher and Christian (2003) observed that the areas of geotechnical concern, such as slopes and waste disposal facilities, are usually associated with mine costs rather than revenue, and therefore, significantly less money is devoted to their site characterization and laboratory testing. INTRODUCTION The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's (WMATA's) rapid transit system, Metro, ultimately will comprise 162.5 km (101 miles) of line divided among 10 routes. As shown in Figure 1, about 24 km (15 miles) of the system will consist of mined rock tunnels distributed along the A, B, C and K Routes. The structural construction contracts for all of the A, C and K Route rock tunnels are complete and trains are running in about one-third of them. A contract for construction of rock tunnel section B-9, the southernmost third of the B Route, was awarded on June 27, 1980. The final design of Sections B-10 and B-lla, the remainder of the rock tunnel portions of the B Route and the Metro system, are well advanced and should be under con¬struction by 1982. Of Metro's 87 stations, 11 will have been constructed by mining in solid rock, a not inconsiderable achievement, since each structure must be over 183 m (600 feet) long, wide enough to accommodate two trains and one or two passenger platforms, and high enough to achieve a stable arching action without encumbering columns. With the passage of years, some original priorities have been reordered, and ways have been sought to streamline and simplify this most complex of Metro structures without grossly violating the architectural standards that make it unique. This paper will summarize that search, and describe the design and construction aspects of the resulting product, the dual chamber rock tunnel station.
