The PPRust North project is an expansion of existing operations on the ?Platreef? orebody in the Limpopo Province of South Africa. Anglo Platinum has been mining and processing the Platreef since 1993 at the adjacent Sandsloot and Zwartfontein South open pits at a current rate of approximately 4.5 million tons per annum. This paper describes the origin of the proposed process flow sheet. A comprehensive test work programme has been conducted evaluating the best process flow sheet for the very hard and variable ore in the proposed mining area. The selection of the comminution circuit is discussed where conventional crushing and SABC options were analysed based on both extensive test work and analyses of current operational data at the existing concentrator. The application of the high pressure grinding roll technology has significant advantages?it replaces the 3rd and 4th stage crushing stages in a conventional circuit. This programme has been conducted over several years and has involved work done at site at pilot scale, internally at the company?s research facilities and externally at various sites. The on-site pilot work was completed over a 7-month period at the existing concentrator facility using a ThyssenKrupp-Polysius, ?Polycom?, 950 mm by 350 mm, high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) machine. In excess of 185 000 tons of ore was processed through the unit during the trial period. This paper describes the test work programme and particularly the proposed application of high pressure grinding technology and its potential for further application in the platinum industry.

"The artisanal mining sector in Central Africa is largely informal, yet provides an essential livelihood for many (directly or indirectly) participants, as well as facilitating an important source for the flow of income into many communities. Artisanal mining varies from site to site, but appear largely well structured despite its informality. The artisanal mining sites in Central Africa have some inherent management structure and the extraction itself is often organised. Artisanal mining is labour intensive and is generally conducted utilising hand digging methods e.g. shovels or hand chisels. Artisanal mining is generally more dangerous than small-scale or large-scale modern mining operations. This is especially true as artisanal operations are generally subsistence activities with artisanal miners focusing more on immediate concerns than the long-term consequences of their activities. When miners have no other source of income, they will usually find ways to evade controls and carry on working. The objective, through proper/dedicated training of artisanal miners is to migrate Artisanal mining to establish a small-scale mining (SSM) industry in Central Africa. Through developing the necessary skills in the fundamental areas of mining it is proposed that Artisanal Mining can become more productive and safer mining operations. The paper reviews the above focus areas, highlighting the skills and tools that are necessary to assist in establishing a sustainable small scale mining industry migrating from manual labour to semi-mechanised mining and processing. The purpose of the transformation process is to create a safe, healthy, environmental and community oriented mining operation with the objective to uplift the skills and wealth of the mineworkers and the general community."

Alluvial diamond deposits covered with a thick overburden cannot be explored effectively and mined profitably with the available conventional techniques. A novel directional drilling technique has been developed and site trials have been conducted at the De Beers Namaqualand Mines situated at the western coast of South Africa. This paper describes the technique developed as well as the results of the site trials. The main task of the project is to develop a tool and a supporting system to achieve a remote exploration and ore extraction method for inaccessible alluvial diamond deposits. The project involves the acquisition of a system, commissioning on-site and evaluating the information obtained during assessment. The project consists of the design -of certain tools and instrumentation for the system, investigations and desktop studies as well as development of the system's logistics. The operating philosophy of the system is based on the keyhole surgery principle. In this study a pilot hole was drilled first, starting from the surface with an inclination to reach deeply seated diamondiferous gravel layers, followed by drilling into a more or less horizontal gravel layer for a certain length and finally pointing-upwards reaching ground surface at a predetermined exit point. The pilot drill bit was then replaced with a larger diameter reamer/mining tool and an HDPE tail pipe was attached behind the reamer. The drill string was retracted back to enlarge the guide hole and flush the excavated ore to the surface through the tail pipe. The material flow in between the sections of the system was' carefully measured to assess and record the gravel recovery rates. Several horizontal holes were drilled at preplanned drill paths to reach and follow the ore layer and the Ore extraction was achieved by means of a reamer/mining tool. Principles of the concept have been proven viable in this investigation.

Lifelong development of skills and knowledge of mining professionals has been recognised worldwide as a challenge for the development of a sustainable mining sector. Practical training and learning over the mine value chain are among the key components of this knowledge building. However, the number of available mining sites for continuous education in real-life conditions is limited; also the specifications for practical training are not clearly defined. The project MINETRAIN was developed to (i) evaluate the potential of the shortly-closing Pyhäsalmi Mine, in Finland, as an educational and training underground facility, and thus, prolong the utility of the existing modern mine site, and to (ii) develop and test practical training programs for mining and mining industry related professionals. Pyhäsalmi facilities enable training among all disciplines related to the overall mine value chain and hence, the project has potential in providing education for sustainable management of any phase of mining operations. The philosophy underpinning the MINETRAIN approach to mining activities is to assist the clients in minimising the technical and financial risks by providing a competitive and skilled personnel asset while optimising the value drivers in their operations. As a first major step of the project, a pilot training course, involving basic-level online theory and hands-on training at the Pyhäsalmi mine site, was undertaken in summer 2019. Feedback from the pilot test group of mining professionals has proved to be very positive. The comments from the participants strongly emphasised the added value of the practical onsite training for improved understanding in the large scale picture of mining on the entire value chain. As a second phase of the project, a new test course was launched in June 2020. The second MINETRAIN course focuses on new technologies and digitisation in mining. Discontinuity Orientation Measurement (DOM) drilling system capable of retrieving the reference line-marked core log, which can be used for determining the relative positions and orientations of discontinuity planes along the borehole axis, has been developed. Accuracy of the borehole joints data measured from the reference-lined core and, eventually, the significance and applicability of DOM drilling system for site exploration are verified by comparing with the spatial characteristics of joints investigated by implementing borehole image-taking instruments in the same borehole. Enhancement of boring efficiency has been also confirmed by performing twin drilling operations, one with DOM drilling system and the other with a conventional drilling machine equipped with D-3 core barrel, on two neighbouring sites of 5 m apart. Ein DOM(Diskontinuitätsorientierungsmessung)-Bohrsystem, das durch Grundlinien markierte Bohrprobelog extrahieren kann und die relativen Lagen und die Orientierungen der sich im Bohrloch verbreitenden Flächen bestimmen kann, ist entwickelt worden. Die Wichtigkeit des DOM-Bohrsystems und dessen Anwendbarkeit auf die Erforschung auf dem Bohrplatz werden dadurch bewiesen, dass man die Genauigkeit der Daten der Bohrlochsspalte, die durch die die Grundlinie zeichnende Bohrprobe gemessen werden, mit dem räumlichen Eigenschaften der Spalte vergleicht, die durch die Bildaufnahme des gleichen Bohrlochs nachgeforscht werden. Based on the geological-geometric characterization of the basaltic rock at the site of a factory for chemical products situated in the Southern region of Brasil, and on results of a significant number of packer tests, the principal directions of flow were estimated, taking into consideration the intersection and the orientation of the joints and the amount of contaminant flow measured in each interval. The tests were performed using the multi-packer hydraulic multitest probe of IPT (HMTP) instrumented with an electric conductivity meter. A method of analysis for three-dimensional evaluation of the amount of contaminant flow in the area was proposed for future mitigation of the problem. Basé sur une caractérization géologique-géotechnique de la roche basaltique existant sur un site dune fabrique de produits chimiques située au sud du Brésil et sur les resultants dún nombre significantif déssais du type packer, les directions principales d´écoulement ont été estimées en considerant l´intersection et orientation des joints et la quantité de contaminant mesurée sur chaque intervale d´essais. Ceux-ci ont été realizes en utilisant une sonde multipacker developée au IPT – São Paulo (HMTP) instrumentée avec un mesureur de condictivité électrique. Une méthode d´analyse 3-D pour l´évaluation du transport du contaminant sur ce site a été proposée pour une future mitigation du problème. Auf Grund der geologischen Struktur des Basalts auf dem Gelände einer chemischen Fabrik in Südbrasilien und der Ergebnisse einer ansehnlichen Zahl von Pumpversuchen wurden die Hauptfließrichtungen bestimmt unter Berücksichtigung des Kluftgefüges und der in jedem Intervall gemessenen Menge kontaminierten Wassers. Die Versuche erfolgten mit dem im IPT entwickelten Verfahren (HMTP) mit Mehrfachpackern und elektrischen Leitfähigkeitsgebern. Ein analytisches Verfahren zur dreidimensionalen Ermittlung der Mengen kontaminierten Wassers wurde für die künftige Befassung mit dem Problem entwickelt.

Although a regulation is in force that all water used underground shall be free of bacterial contamination, in practice it is often very difficult to accomplish this. The standard method of disinfection m South African mines IS treatment with calcium hypochlorite, although liquid sodium hypochlorite is used at a few sites. Primarily because the process depends on human control for the addition of the hypochlorite and the regulation of its now, it is frequently found difficult to disinfect mine water adequately and continuously. In many marine environments, chlorine generated by the electrolysis of seawater in its passage through an electric cell is used for disinfection. The generation procedure is continuous and needs no human control except for occasional checking of the equipment. This paper describes the successful implementation of the process, suitably .modified, .at four underground sites. After severe scaling problems had been overcome, a procedure resulted that chlorinates considerably more effectively than the previous system (dosing with calcium hypochlorite), and that has a lower amortized operating cost.

Notes on the composition of pre- European copper and copper-alloy artefacts from the Transvaal by H. M. Friede. Ph.D. (Visitor) Seven copper artefacts (five ingots and two ornaments) found at prehistoric sites in the Transvaal were submitted to analysis. All the artefacts showed a high copper content and a relatively Iow level of impurities. A little-known ingot type from the Limpopo Valley ('nail' ingot) is described, and its analysis is given. The analysis of two copper ornaments that come from sites dated to the 5th Century AD. and the 11th Century AD. showed the constancy of the composition of copper articles over long periods. The well-known 'Blaauwberg Ingot' was re-analysed, and the results showed that this ingot cannot be regarded as a true bronze. Analytical values for the composition of three brass artefacts from Bambandyanalo (Mapungubwe), Northern Transvaal, are given. Some aspects of pre-European bronze manufacture and brass smelting, and of early metal trade from the East Coast into the interior of South Africa, are discussed.

Traditionally, the term `total system' design applied to comminution conjures images of a design that addresses the usual business and operational drivers, including health, safety and environment (HSE), capital cost, operating cost, throughput and product size. In terms of the physical process, the mine to customer type studies also exemplifies an approach that satisfies a normal `total systems' approach. As an industry there are drivers that are forcing a re-consideration of what we regard as our total system. This modification of drivers will require changes in approach and implementation to provide the best solutions. Some of the major changes that impact the drivers are shortage of skilled personnel, changing social attitudes to remote mine site work, greenhouse gas emissions (GHGE), quality of available orebodies and geographical location of new mine sites. One approach to the challenges presented by the changing business environment is to expand the system envelope around comminution to ensure that comminution, in its widest sense, helps to meet the new realities. Background to the new drivers and constraints is provided and some of the appropriate responses are examined in relation to the impact on the total system.

The removal of a cylindrical core from thick-wall sections for creep analysis by the relatively new Weldcore® process represents a very exciting methodology for obtaining more representative creep damage data from large engineering structures. The cylindrical core that is removed, representing about 60% of the wall thickness, leaves a substantial removal site that needs to be repaired. This paper presents data pertaining to taper Friction Hydro Pillar Processing as an alternative repair technique for filling the core removal site. Process parameters were evaluated with special attention being paid to the effect of downward force on process response variables, weld defects, and mechanical properties of 10CrMo910 steel. Process temperature and torque response as well as total process energy input were also considered. This paper also assesses the static and dynamic performance of this repair technique. The influence of a varying downward force and the occurrence and position of discontinuities were quantified. Downward force was shown to have the most notable effect on weld joint dynamic performance and was found to be related to the process temperatures achieved in close proximity to the weld interface.

A solar reflector soiling study was carried out at a ferromanganese smelter in South Africa to assess the soiling rates at different locations around the plant. Several meteorological parameters were monitored to give insight into the conditions that lead to increased soiling. Mineralogical characterization of dust samples collected from the reflectors and the atmosphere revealed that only a certain size fraction is of importance with regard to soiling, and that the dust can be attributed to both raw materials and smelter products. Proximity to the dust source was the primary driver for increased soiling. The site that experienced the most soiling was very close to raw material heaps; this was deemed an outlier and was excluded from the summary statistics. The secondary driver for increased soiling was location relative to the smelter dust sources and the wind’s direction and speed. The reflector set at the best location experienced 13.1% less soiling than the set at the ‘worst’ (but still feasible) location, represented by an averaged mean daily reflectance loss of 0.0186. The study revealed that while there are periods of intense soiling at this particular site, proper planning of reflector location in relation to the smelter dust sources can significantly mitigate the soiling rate.

This paper summarizes a behavioural safety project undertaken in seven quarries in the UK in order to investigate its applicability as a means of raising the standards of health and safety in the UK quarrying industry. A behavioural safety methodology was developed and trialed at two quarry sites in the UK. During the study the number of unsafe acts and minor accidents had decreased and at one of the quarries there was a 95% reduction in the number of working days lost. It was then introduced at a further five sites of varying sizes and within this focused specifically on lone workers as well as behaviours that affected quality and environmental issues. Positive improvements were noted in most of these operations. The project also looked at the effectiveness of health and safety performance indicators. Here, the common lead and trailing indicators for both safety and health that are commonly used by industry were identified. In consultation with the UK quarrying industry these were then used to identify specific performance measurement criteria that can be used by the quarrying sector to measure performance. Following on from this, a quarry specific health and safety management system specification was developed for large and small quarries.

ABSTRACT: This paper contributes to the study of underground structures in argillaceous media, especially Tournemire argillites (Aveyron, France). The basic results obtained over six years in two experimental drifts at the Tournemire site are presented. In situ measurements cover drift wall temperature, humidity and convergence. Delayed convergence represents around 50-65% of the total measured convergence. Analysis of the measurements has shown that delayed convergence is explained by the viscoplastic behaviour of the argillaceous formations. Lemaitre’s rheological model has been extended to the orthotropic case, as Tournemire argillite is naturally anisotropic. The triaxial creep test results on samples at different orientations enabled the parameters of the Tournemire argillite to be identified in terms of orthotropic viscoplastic law. A plane deformation model, using this rheological law and the initial stress field in the site, was developed to interpret the convergence measurements in the drifts. The computed results match the measurements well, especially during the excavation phase. KEY WORDS: Argillite, convergence, time-dependent behaviour, creep, viscoplasticity, modelling. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Der vorliegende Artikel ist ein Beitrag zur Untersuchung der unterirdischen Strukturen tonhaltiger Milieus, insbesondere der Tongesteine von Tournemire (Aveyron, Frankreich). Die wichtigsten Ergebnisse, die in zwei Forschungsstrecken am Standort Tournemine über einen Beobachtungszeitraum von sechs Jahren zusammengetragen wurden, werden hier vorgestellt. Gemessen wurden in situ Temperatur, Feuchtigkeit und Streckenkonvergenz. Von der insgesamt gemessenen Konvergenz sind etwa 50 bis 65 % auf zeitlich verzögerte Konvergenz zurückzuführen. Die Auswertung aller Messungen hat ergeben, dass die zeitverzögerte Konvergenz mit dem viskos-plastischen Verhalten des Tonsteinmassivs zu erklären ist. Aufgrund der naturgemäßen Anisotropie des Tongesteins von Tournemine wurde das rheologische Modell von Lemaitre auf den orthotropen Fall ausgedehnt. Triaxiale Kriechversuche bei jeweils unterschiedlicher Ausrichtung dienten der Ermittlung der einzelnen Parameter des orthotropen, viskos-plastischen Gesetzes. Zur Auswertung der Konvergenzmessungen innerhalb der beiden Strecken wurde unter Beachtung dieses rheologischen Modells sowie des ursprünglichen Spannungszustands vor Ort ein flächiges Deformationsmodell entwickelt. Die Rechenergebnisse zeigen eine gute Übereinstimmung mit den Messungen, insbesondere während der Vortriebsphase. RESUME : Cet article est une contribution à l’étude des structures souterraines dans les milieux argileux, notamment les argilites de Tournemire (Aveyron, France). Les principaux résultats obtenus pendant six années, dans deux galeries d’expérimentation au site de Tournemire, sont présentés. Ces mesures portent sur la température, l’humidité et la convergence des parements des galeries. La convergence différée représente environ 50 à 65% de la convergence totale mesurée. L’analyse de l’ensemble des mesures a montré que la convergence différée est interprétée par le comportement viscoplastique du massif argileux. Etant donné que l’argilite de Tournemire est naturellement anisotrope, le modèle rhéologique de Lemaitre a été étendu au cas orthotrope. Les résultats des essais de fluage triaxial, sur des échantillons à différentes orientations, ont permis de déterminer les paramètres de la loi viscoplastique orthotrope. Un modèle en déformation plane, utilisant cette loi rhéologique et l’état de contrainte initiale dans le site, a été développé en vue d’interpréter les mesures de convergence dans les galeries. Les résultats des calculs sont en bon accord avec les mesures et plus particulièrement durant la phase de creusement. Much of the technology and methodology extensively employed in current mining operations is in the mature phase of its lifecycle and, consequently, subject to the principle of diminishing returns. It is probable that future gains in productivity and safety of the magnitude essential for the sustained economic viability of the industry will be derived only from a determined technological development programme. The history of trackless mechanized mining, which represented a radical change in methodology in deep-level gold mines, is reviewed. The benefits and obstacles to the realization of the full potential are highlighted. Similarly, an overview is given of alternative mechanization developments in South Africa. In addition to the development and application of advanced technology, an envelope of operating parameters relevant to each methodology must be engineered to facilitate the site-specific selection of the most appropriate. Furthermore, a mechanism for the evaluation of cost effectiveness is essential to the decision-making process. The narrow, tabular orebodies of relatively low dip that are encountered in the South African hard-rock mining industry make the design and manufacture of a comprehensive range of stoping equipment extremely difficult. The machinery that has been available to date has demonstrated only limited site-specific success. The development of suitable machinery must necessarily be initiated and driven by the South African mining industry in collaboration with the major equipment manufacturers in the world.

Excessive dust generation from unpaved mine haul roads is a problem common to most surface mining operations. While optimal road wearing course material selection parameters reduce the inherent dust generation potential, they do not totally eliminate fugitive dust. Many different classes of suppression or palliative treatments are available for mine haul roads and this paper initially ascertains basic selection guidelines, using a set of ideal dust palliative product, application and performance parameters based on mine road-user requirements. An evaluation and modelling methodology for truck generated fugitive dust emissions is developed as a basis for the comparative assessment of dust control strategies. For water-based spraying, a watering model was developed to estimate individual mine road watering frequencies for characteristic site parameter combinations during summer and winter operating conditions, for a required level of control or maximum dust defect. This forms the base-case scenario with which to compare the performance of other types of dust palliatives under the same conditions. Finally, a basic palliative economic evaluation model is introduced with the aim of identifying and costing the establishment, application and maintenance rejuvenation activities associated with the use of chemical palliatives. While palliative cost and performance is generally site specific, it is shown that under certain combinations of conditions, the use of dust palliatives has the potential to deliver cost savings when compared to water-based spraying.

"In open pit dozer bulk push operations, the material left resting against the highwall after blasting poses an issue. This is because dozers cannot physically get in behind the waste to begin the bulk pushing process. Instead, an excavator can be used to side-cast this waste for the dozers to access. An alternative technique is to have the dozers ‘side-cut’ the material, which involves the dozers running parallel to the wall, digging out the material, and eventually rotating their blades to begin bulk pushing. Industry practices suggest the latter technique is less productive and economical than using an excavator. However, such excavator sidecasting ‘economic viability’ assumes that smaller/ancillary type excavators are used (i.e. less than 23 m3 bucket capacity). So, what happens if some mine sites are restricted to using relatively larger excavators (> 23 m3 bucket) that are preferred for higher priority digging tasks? When can they avoid using their excavator? This paper explores multiple scenarios that have been designed and developed to simulate data results, which identify conditions in which the dozer side-cutting technique becomes more economically viable than excavator side-casting in terms of decreased unit cost per loose cubic metre. IntroductionOptimizing the cost of waste removal operations is important for the profitability of opencast coal mines. In the past decade, dozer bulk pushing has emerged and taken over from traditional waste removal operations such as dragline and truck-and-shovel methods at various sites around the world (Beatty, 1994). In a typical bulk push operation, once the bench has been blasted, waste is left resting against the highwall, which can either be cleared using a loading unit or by having the dozers ‘side-cut’ the highwall.Dozers perform most effectively when slot dozing side-by-side, perpendicular to the highwall. However, when dozers are required to remove material off the highwall, they must push parallel to the highwall, rather than perpendicular, hence ‘side-cutting’ the material to ensure a clean face. While dozer sidecutting is possible, it has been found that the majority of mine sites use a loading unit in this situation to avoid dozer inefficiency. Other perceived issues with dozer side-cutting include higher maintenance requirements and safety risks to dozer operators working in close proximity to the highwall."

"Accurate delineation of the contact between a kimberlite pipe and country rock at production level depths is a challenge due to limited geological data. Geological information is obtained from widely spaced diamond core boreholes which are drilled either from surface or from higher mining levels within the pipe. Kimberlite pipe/country rock contacts are notoriously irregular and variable, further reducing the confidence in contact positions defined by the drill-holes. At Finsch Diamond Mine (FDM), the opportunity arose to further improve the confidence in the contact positions relative to the planned slot (end) positions of each sublevel cave tunnel during the development stage of these tunnels. As a result, the accuracy of the 3D geological model has improved.The use of diamond drill core for this purpose is expensive due to site establishment requirements. The lengthy time taken during site establishment also delays the development of tunnels and support cycles, thereby extending the completion dates. FDM has reduced delays during development by adopting percussion drilling, in conjunction with gamma ray logging. The S36 drill rig is mounted on a moveable platform and does not require a costly and lengthy site establishment. The holes are generally drilled (0°/flat) on grade elevation, and these holes could also be drilled from the rim tunnels (developed in waste) into the kimberlite pipe. A single-boom production drill rig is normally used to drill holes about 20 m in length.On completion of the contact delineation drilling, gamma logging of the holes is conducted using the GeoVista geophysical sonde (or probe) to log the natural gamma signature of the dolomite/ kimberlite contact. The advantage of this tool is that the readings are continuous within centimetre intervals, and due to contrasting characteristics between kimberlite (rich in clay minerals) and dolomite, the contact position can be determined accurately. The better definition of contact positions also adds value to tunnel stopping distance in terms of developing the tunnel’s slot at the optimum distance from the contact (easier blasting of longhole rings, avoidance of contact overbreak and premature waste ingress, and other matters relating to extraction of ore from these tunnels). This method is highly successful and has reduced development costs (on-time completion), improved definition of the pipe’s contact position for geological modelling, improved blast design, and mitigated early waste ingress by maintaining the contact’s integrity."
