This report summarizes the results of preliminary mineral-dressing studies by the Bureau of Mines on five samples of copper-bearing ore from various Alaska de-posits. The work on each sample was not extensive enough to warrant individual publication. The results, however, indicate the possibilities and limitations of concentration of the respective ores. The information therefore may be helpful in future development of these ore bodies. Four of the five samples tested were submitted to the laboratory by engineers of the Bureau of Mines as part of the examinations and survey investigations of strategic-mineral deposits in Alaska. This program is conducted to assist development of mineral resources in the Territory and particularly to aid economic exploitation of marginal or complex ores. The fifth sample was submitted by engineers of the Defense Minerals Exploration Administration.

"Electron spin resonance (ESRJ spectrum of the hydroxyl (· OH) radical spin adduct with .the spin trap 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrrolintt-N-oxide has been obtained in suspensions of freshly ground quartz particles. The concentration of the spin adduct (and hence of the • OH radicals) increases with the amount of grinding. The dust's potential for the generation of the· OH radicals is maximum when fresh (i.e., immediately after grinding) and decreases to 50% in about a day on storage in air. Studies involving metal chelates .indicate that the • OH radical formation involves mainly the silica surface and H20 rather than the Fenton reaction. The results suggest that hydroxyl radical reaction(s) could be important in the lipid peroxidation and fibrogenicity by quartz dust, particularly .in acute silicosis. INTRODUCTIONIn this paper we report on our electron spin resonance (ESR) detection of the formation of hydroxyl (·OH) radicals in aqueous suspensions of freshly crushed quartz particles. This work was undertaken with a view to find possible clues to the role of free radicals in the pathogenesis of quartz-induced fibrogenicity, commonly known as silicosis. We noted that while silicosis is one of the major health hazards in coal and mineral industries, the mechanism by which the quartz particles exert their toxic action on cells and the process(es) by which these actions progress to fibrogenesis are still poorly ·understood (Reiser and Last, 1979; Singh and .Rahman, 1987). It is generally thought, nevertheless, that the action of quartz particles on the biological membranes is the starting point of the silicotic process (Parazzi et - al., 1968). A possible clue to the mechanism of the membrane damage by quartz particles, in terms of the role of oxygenated free radicals, is suggested by the following observations. A suspension of quartz particles in contact with alveolar macrophages has been reported (Gabor et al., 1975; Koike et al., 1982) to initiate an enhancement of lipid peroxidation, defined broadly as the oxidative deterioration of polyunsaturated components of lipids. Hydroxyl (· OH) radicals are known to be capable of peroxidation by abstracting hydrogen atoms from cell-membrane lipids (Halliwell and Gutteridge, 1985) and of initiating lipid peroxidation in lysosomal membranes. (Fong et al., 1973). Arong other lines, it is known that exposure of cell membranes, fatty acids, and unsaturated food oils to ionizing radiation, which generates· OH radicals, causes rapid peroxidation (Halliwell and Gutteridge, 1985). Thus • OH radicals (and also other oxygenated species such as Oi, 10 2, and H20 2) might be expected to play a role in the toxicity of quartz. Earlier studies of the aqueous chemistry of quartz suspensions have reported detection of H2O 2 (Kalbanev et al., 1980), implicating the formation of ·OH radicals as transient species. However, we are not aware of any report of the detection of • OH radicals in quartz reactions, and thus the present study was undertaken. Since it-is known that, because of their high reactivity (hence short lifetime) in aqueous media, the • OH radicals cannot be detected via ESR directly (Finkelstein et al., 1980; Buettner, 1982) we have used .ESR combined with the spin-trap methodology (Finkelstein et al., 1980) for studying the· OH formation. The results show that· OH radicals are indeed formed in aqueous suspensions of freshly ground quartz; thus pointing to ·a possible new clue to the cytotoxicity of freshly formed quartz particles and thereby to silica fibrogenicity."

"SUMMARYThe J. D. Price property is in Crittenden County, Ky., about 5-1/2 miles west of Marion. The Levias-Crittenden Springs fault system traverses the property. Mines on 3 miles of the same fault system immediately northeast have produced about 250,000 tons of fluorspar ore. The Keystone property, adjacent on the northeast, has produced about 150,000 tons of ore. 3/About 1934, lessees, sank a shaft upon the Price property to a depth of 111.5 feet and crosscut from the bottom of the shaft to the principal fault. No ore was found. Later, in 1942-43, they explored the same fault by core-drilling, but this project also was unsuccessful in finding ore.The author visited the property in September 1944, and subsequently the Bureau further explored the property by core-drilling three holes. No ore was found.ACKNOWLEGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. In this Bureau of Mines investigation a device was developed that permits the determination of the modulus of elasticity of the stress-relief cores obtained in the process of making in situ stress measurements. This determination is made by hydraulically loading the external surface of the stress-relief cores and by measuring the corresponding borehole deformation. The theoretical relationship between the borehole deformation, the applied pressure, and the modulus of elasticity is presented. Also, experimental results obtained from measurements on a simulated stress-relief core made of aluminum and on a limestone stress-relief core are given. Because of the symmetrical loading obtained with this device, the isotropy of the core material can be evaluated. With this device it is also possible to study the effect of eccentricity, that is, the effect within cores in which the inner hole is not coincident with the long axis of the specimen.

The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the potential of columbium-hafnium alloys as structural materials for use at elevated temperatures. The work described in this report was conducted to determine the properties of columbium-hafnium alloys and to select the more promising ones for further improvement. Properties determined in this report were machinability, hardness, workability, tensile strength, and oxidation resistance. Ten ingots, ranging from 100 percent columbium to 70 atomic-percent hafnium, were prepared and subjected to tests. The test results showed that the alloys with 33 and 50 atomic-percent hafnium were superior in workability, strength, and oxidation resistance. For the alloy series tested, the strength and hardness values increased with the increasing hafnium content. Maximum values were reached with 50 atomic-percent hafnium. The oxidation resistance was poorest at the 1 atomic-percent hafnium level but improved with increasing hafnium content through 70 atomic-percent. Eight of the ten ingots were fabricable at room temperature. The two remaining ingots, those with 5 and 10 atomic-percent hafnium, required hot-working.

The Harding pegmatite dike is well known for the production of spodumene and lepidolite in the period 1920 to 1930. It attained greater prominence during the last war by being the largest producer of domestic tantalum ore from the rare mineral microlite. The deposit is believed to be the only proved reserve of tantalum ore in the United States today. In 1943 the main portion of a large tantalum-bearing zone in the Harding dike was developed by the Bureau of Mines with the assistance of the Federal Geological Survey. Analysis of this zone from 39 diamond drill holes and quarry exposures showed a large deposit containing 2 pounds of microlite per ton and 21 percent spodumene, In September 1948, the Bureau of Mines resumed development of the deposit with a view to extending the tantalum-bearing zone farther to the southwest or delimiting the ore body. Seven diamond-drill holes failed to penetrate the ore zone in its southwestward projection, Much of the following general information is summarized from the report on the first exploratory work of the Bureau of Mines by John H. The explosibility of coal dust has long been recognized by competent investigators as constituting one of the dangers of mining coal and in the use of pulverized coal as a fuel in industrial plants. The Bureau of Mines has carried on extensive series of experiments dealing with this subject, and has not only developed methods for the practical prevention of this danger, but in the, course of these experiments has developed a standard method of determining the relative explosibility of coal dusts and other organic dusts.3 Oil shale contains compounds 'of carbon and hydrogen that are either of a petroleum nature and are strongly ,adsorbed upon the incombustible part of the shale, or else are present in the shale as a compound ("kerogen") which has the property of changing into petroleum-like products when acted upon by heat. The oil shales may contain varying amounts of the organic matter, ranging from a trace to more than 66 per cent, depending upon their richness; therefore, it is important to know whether the dusts formed in mining and handling these oil shales are explosive when mixed with air and if so, to indicate remedial measures. This paper gives the results of explosibility tests of several pulverized oil shale's, selected as being typical of those which in the future may be used in commercial shale-oil production test on a sample of typical Colorado oil shale has been., published in an earlier paper.4

In its investigation of old, abandoned, lead-zinc mines at which records of operations are not available, in 1914 the Bureau of Mines dug surface trenches anti', in 1947 It diamond-drilled three holes at the Albright Farm deposit in Sinking Valley. Some good lead-zinc ore had been extracted from veins in dolomitic limestone during the time of the American Revolution and as late as 1870. Since that time the only activity was sporadic prospecting and developing. Thu Bureau of Mines disclosed two additional veins by surface trenching, but diamond drilling failed to find significant lead-zinc mineralization.

A relatively simple and inexpensive encapsulated hydraulic device has been developed by the Bureau of Mines to facilitate study of coal bumps , and to measure pressure changes in a coalbed as it is subjected to roof loading during mining . Construction of the device and application techniques are described . Preliminary feasibility tests in the laboratory and field indicate that the device responds satisfactorily to pressure changes in coal created by roof loading .

The Mining Law of 1910 , with amendments of 1914 and 1928 , is at present in force in the Dominican Republic . The first and basic mining law of the Republic was passed in 1876 , and although numerous changes and amendments have been made from time to time , the new laws and amendments thereto have not changed the original or basic law materially . However , these enactments have materially changed the legal methods governing the exploitation of the mineral resources of this country and have added new regulations and requirements to those concerning certain specific minerals , etc. The original or basic law still exists as it was first promulgated to protect the rights of the Dominican Republic itself , the rights of the landowner , and the rights of prospectors in general . The Mining Law of 1876 remained in force , without amendment , until it was superseded by the law of May 25 , 1904 , an enactment modeled after the Mexican mining law and designed especially to encourage the investment of

Natural or artificial manganese dioxide of a grade pure enough to be satisfactory as depolarizer for dry cells has never been available in large supply simultaneously with being available in desired quality . The Second World War called for more of it than ever . A supply of natural material from the Gold Coast was ample for the war and was not completely exhausted . Whereas the crystal form of the manganese oxide was not recognized as a matter of importance until the war came , it is now known that gamma MnO2 is a desirable form and that pyrolusite , once thought acceptable , is not the best mineral . The following paper is a translation of an internal company report filed at the Bitterfeld office of the I. G. Farbenindustrie A.G. by Dr. Peter Marx in 1933 , just a year after G. W. Nichols had published in the Transactions of the American Electrochemical Society a study of making anodic manganese dioxide from solutions of manganous sulfate . The I. G. experiments were made to confirm the American work and were also extended to a larger scale . Only chemical purity was considered , and no mention is made of crystal form . The report adds to the knowledge submitted by Nichols but has not been previously available to the general public . Believing it of value to the United States industry , a translation has been made .

Are the safety rules in your work place effective? Do supervisors enforce them as they should? Do supervisors abide by these rules? Safety rules are an important aspect of many company safety programs, particularly if employees must work in an intrinsically hazardous environment such as a coal mine. However, for various reasons, supervisors sometimes fail to enforce safety rules (Arvey & Jones, 1985; Hartshorn, 1998). This paper presents some findings obtained from interviews with coal miners about why supervisors sometimes fail to enforce an important mine safety rule. It also contains a few suggestions addressing what could be done to help supervisors perform this job function more effectively.

The health and financial costs of cumulative injuries are plaguing the mining industry. Industry leaders are concentrating on reducing the risk of injury to their workers through design and redesign of work environments. While ergonomics is not a currently regulated field, many mines are realizing that the only way to tackle their most costly injuries, cumulative injuries, is to make the proactive choice to understand those injuries, their root causes and to make workplace changes to prevent them from occurring. Reduction of these injuries not only improves the health and morale of the workers but increases productivity and profit for the companies. Knowledge and reporting of ergonomic risk factors by employees and ergonomics committees is key to these changes and to the reduction of cumulative injuries. NIOSH is developing strong relationships with industry associations and equipment manufacturers to leverage their communication abilities to transfer knowledge to their customers and make a difference in the health and safety of U.S. miners. The benefits of a formalized approach to reducing these injuries along with examples will be presented.

Efficient and safe use of mobile roof supports (MRS) depends on the interaction between the MRS and coal strata. Of particular interest to this study are the mechanics of strata deformation as influenced by geologic conditions, pillar extraction methods, and MRS load-bearing capabilities. To provide a better understanding of the mechanics of strata deformation, the authors have collected and reviewed measurements of convergence and stress in one western U.S. mine and have completed pseudo-three-dimensional, boundary-element modeling for two typical pillar-pulling plans. Stress distribution in the mine roof above pairs of MRS’s was calculated to demonstrate how MRS’s contributed to the control of roof block movements. It was shown that overall stress and roof-floor convergence patterns were most influenced by the stiffness of coal-measure rocks and by pillar-pulling sequences and layouts. MRS’s and other support systems play a critical role in controlling the stability of both the immediate roof and the middle roof for a distance of up to 18 m (60ft) above the seam. MRS’s provide unique ground control advantages over other types of secondary support by significantly reducing the time between mining and installation of secondary support. Although MRS’s are similar to posts in stiffness and capacity, they are more effective than posts under static loads because they can yield and still maintain loads at near-peak capacity, whereas posts fail and loose their ability to limit mine roof deformation.

The document is intended for use by front-line supervision, ventilation engineers, and mine planners. Included are discussions of jet fan characteristics, selection and use critieria, and do's and don't's for easier operation, safety, and performance. The handbook is based on research at three underground metal/nonmetal mines having cross-sectional areas of 900 to 2,000 ft2.

The possible contribution of an improved mineral economy to the further advancement of the lesser developed regions of the world is a vital consideration today. Many of the newly independent countries recognize the problems and the challenge involved in orderly development of mineral resources. Some countries are inventorying resources, planning development, and encouraging local and foreign participation. The Malagasy Republic, composed of the island of Madagascar and the immediately adjacent islands, formerly the French Overseas Territory of Madagascar, is one of the members of the French Community which achieved independence in 1960. It is making real progress towards improving its mineral economy, an effort particularly remarkable considering the generally unfavorable geographic location of the area with respect to world markets and what is, after all, a comparatively sparse-economic mineralization in the light of discoveries to date. Most of the development of the Malagasy economy before independence was fostered by French private enterprise, although the State participated in some ventures. Since independence, the Government has encouraged private investment from a variety of sources through favorable legislation and has indicated that legitimate investment projects that will further advance social and economic programs will be welcome.

The Eufaula bauxite district of Barbour and Henry Counties in southeast Alabama covers an area approximately 14 miles long, 6 miles wide at the eastern extremity near the Chattahoochee River, and 10 miles wide at the western end near the east fork of the Choctawhatchee River (see figs. 1 and 2). The long axis of this polygon bears a little south of east.
