India ranks fourth in the world of iron ore production and exported 55% of the total iron ore production of 180.9 million tons in 2006-07. As per United Nations Framework Classification (UNFC), the total iron ore reserves in India is 25249 mt. This consists of about 14630 mt of Hematite ore and 10619 mt of Magnetite ore. While the deposits of magnetite iron ore are limited to the states of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, hematite ore is available in abundance in Jharkhand, Orissa, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka and Goa. National Steel Policy, declared by government of India in 2005 envisages 110 million tons of steel production by 2020. This is likely to be revised upwards. Massive exploration work in iron ore is needed to convert the available resources of iron ore into reserve category. Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) produced more than 24.5 million tons of iron ore during 2006-07 and plans to produce 42.0 million tons per year by the year 2010-11 to meet the requirement for a hot metal production of 26.2 million tons. While processing iron ore, the challenge faced would be the reduction of the gangue materials ? alumina and silica. It is proposed to bring down alumina and silica in the iron ore to less than 2% each from the current level of 2.5%~3.5% each. Appropriate beneficiation schemes are being developed depending upon the mineralogical characteristics of iron ores at different mines in the country. The state-of-art beneficiation technologies like Hydro-cyclone, jigging, magnetic separation etc. will be incorporated. SAIL?s corporate plan envisages blast furnace burden of 15% iron ore lumps, 15% pellets and 70% sinter by 2010. This strategy opens up the opportunity of utilization of micro fines generated in the mining and beneficiation processes for pellet making. This also directs towards all together new technological approach to the beneficiation process. SAIL is planning to set-up three pelletisation plants of 2~3 mtpa capacity. Environmental issues like reduction in slime loss and utilization of dumped low-grade iron ore are very important. R&D Centre for Iron and Steel, SAIL has carried out extensive laboratory investigations in the above area. This will help in reducing the loss of valuable iron through slimes and also increase the iron ore resource base. Laboratory investigations indicate that low grade dumped ore fines with Fe: 55.5% can be upgraded to a product with Fe: 66.2% with about 48% recovery.

"The research is aimed at solving the problem of enrichment of sulphide ores, counting for more than 40% of the reserves in Russia. The aim of the research is to develop and scientifically substantiate the scheme for processing this type of ores in order to extract fine-dispersed noble metal particles (FNMP). In this work samples of sulfide carbonaceous ore and flotation concentrates were analyzed using complex precision methods of analysis: electron microscopy, spectral analysis with induction plasma, complex thermogravimetric analyzes, etc. Data on the composition of the organic constituent of the samples were obtained with the usage of complex thermogravimetric analysis. The presence of various types of kerogen and bitumen has been established. Experimental studies on the coarsening of FNMP from the initial ore and flotation concentrates using electromagnetic radiation have shown the effectiveness of this coalescence method. The data on the elemental composition of the samples and the amount of FNMP were obtained. Thus, studies on the extraction of FNMP from carbon sulphide ore have shown the possibility of effective usage of combination of electromagnetic action and classical enrichment methods to extract fine particles of noble metals. INTRODUCTION Due to the depletion of free-milling raw materials the involvement of new types of deposits is the strategy of developing mining industry of Russia. The black shale raw materials show interest as a non-traditional source of precious metals since its genetic and positional gold-carbon connection. Muruntau, Sukhoi Log, Bakyrchik, Natalkinsky, Nezhdaninskoye, Olimpiadinsky, Homsen and others are the examples of well-known deposits of the black shale formation [1]. In fact the main gold-dispersed regions of Russia are composed of black-shale strata. Review of literature [2-5] shows that in recent years in almost all deposits of the black shale formation metals of the platinum group (PGM) were detected that significantly increases their practical importance."

"In the article there is set forth a development experience of JSC LEBEDINSKY GOK Beneficiation Plant concerning the plan of increase in the production volumes of the iron ore concentrate with Fe content more than 69.5%. There are considered the issues regarding implementation of the updated process scheme of the concentrate beneficiation using fine screening operation, its industrial tests have shown an exploitability of this development direction. There are described the issues relating to the ceramic filters for dehydration of the additionally-beneficiated concentrate, there are given the production and process figures achieved during the exploitation. The methods of the research. In the paper there have been used the following scientific research methods: the methods of system analysis, mathematical statistics, classification, comparison, modelling, observance, experiment. INTRODUCTION JSC LEBEDINSKY GOK is the largest leading enterprise for iron ore beneficiation and the unique RF producer of the merchant hot briquetted sponge iron (HBI) highly demanded by the consumers. Raw materials for hot briquetted iron production are fluxed pellets produced from iron ore concentrate with Fe content more than 69.5% (additionally-beneficiated concentrate). Strategic program of the plant’s development foresees expansion of production of the highly demanded products that imposes a necessity of expending capacity of the enterprise and implementation in production of modern processes and equipment having low resource intensity and ensuring in addition a high efficiency. Construction of the third stage of the HBI Plant became one of directions for the strategic development of JSC LEBEDINSKY GOK implemented in 2017 that caused a demand in the production volumes and filtration of the iron ore concentrate with Fe content more than 69.5%. Purpose of the work – to develop and to provide a rationalization for efficiency of the production process and filtration of the iron ore concentrate with Fe content more than 69.5% ensuring increase of production volumes and its prime cost."

A practical an interactive model to describe the operation of a flotation bank of mechanical cells was developed based on the hydrodynamic and metallurgical characterization of large industrial flotation cells. Thus, the mineral grade and recovery, as well as the stream properties along the flotation bank can be described in terms of the operating variables. The model was built considering the flotation bank as a distributed system, so the solution for the water and solids mass balances, per size classes, for each single cell, are sequentially solved. Also, each cell was described by two distinct zones, the collection zone characterized by the flotation rate constant and the froth zone characterized by the froth recovery. The mineral feed was described in terms of the mineral species and particle size classes, using a rectangular flotation rate constant distribution. Also, the effect of changing the actual operating variables (air flowrate, pulp level, pulp density, pulp flowrate, etc.) on the mineral collection process, in the collection (pulp) zone, was considered downstream along the bank. The froth recovery of floatable mineral has been estimated by measuring the mass flowrate of particles entering the froth by true flotation together with the concentrate mass flowrate (ton/h). The mass flowrate of collected particles at the pulp/froth interface level was calculated from direct measurement of bubble load (ton/m3) and gas flowrate (m3/h). Flotation recovery is mainly related to the froth depth and air flowrate. All parameters considered in the model have been adjusted from direct measurements in plant site. Also, the effects of other operating variables such as reagents dosage, top of froth grade, or froth discharge velocity are presently under study. This procedure has been tested using data from industrial rougher operations consisting of flotation banks with 5 cells to 9 cells in series, and different cell sizes, such as 45m3, 130m3, 160m3 and 250m3. Thus, it has been shown that the model approach is a powerful tool for flotation cells diagnosis, operation and development of new control strategies, as well as, to evaluate the effect that de-sign and operating variables have upon the collection and froth zones performance in large flotation cells.

"The inertia cone crusher has lots of advantages, such as big crushing ratio, fine particle size, material layer crushing, good passing tramp iron performance and stable technical index, realized open crushing circuit and simplified crushing flowsheet. The crusher was input to China’s Beijing General Research Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (BGRIMM) from Russia’s Mekhanobr-Tekhnika Research & Engineering Corporation at the beginning of the 1990s. This paper introduces that after years of absorption and innovation how Chinese researchers optimized and creatively designed about transmission mechanism, bracing structure, kinetic parameters, lubrication system, dust sealing system, damping system and hydraulic control system etc on the basis of keeping its advanced theory and unique structure, therefore the crusher’s stability was raised and the usage cost was reduced greatly. Accordingly the inertia cone crusher in China has been widely used in many fields, such as mineral resources and the recycling of metallurgical slag. The achievement in cooperation was fully affirmed by governments of Russia and China, and cooperation of science and technology in the mining and metallurgy industry between Russia and China is promoted greatly. INTRODUCTION From the early 1950s, the former Mekhanobr Institite(now Mechanobr-Tekhnika Research & Engineering Corporation) devoted itself to the research of inertial cone crusher and put it into industrial application in the late 1980s. Magnesite producing companies rely on high grade purity MgO. The mineralogy of magnesite has a significant impact on the manufacturing of magnesite bricks. The manufacturing process of bricks companies utilizes 90% magnesite from 85%~90% MgO. The main objective of the magnesite bricks was to utilizes the indigenous raw material available in bulk quantity. With better under-standing of chemistry of the mineral species and strict control of bricks manufacturing/processing conditions can be better produce efficiently, a low cost high quality bricks with minimum detrimental environmental impact.

"The paper describes the results of stripping of copper production dusts by leaching with aqueous soda, nitric acid solutions and recovery from solutions resulting in the production of lead sulphate, tribasic lead sulfate (TBLS), ammonium perrhenate, zinc, copper-cadmium cake.The combination of two stripping operations under chosen optimal conditions allows the recovery of 98% rhenium, 82% lead, 92 % copper, and 96% zinc and cadmium each. The major amount of rhenium (~ 80%) is recovered at the carbonization stage, and other metals - at the nitric acid leaching stage.Lead sulfate was precipitated by mixing solutions resulting from carbonization and leaching. Tribasic lead sulfate was produced by dissolving lead sulfate in sodium hydroxide solutions. Rhenium was recovered from mother liquor resulting from lead sulfate precipitation by liquid-liquid extraction and zinc was recovered from raffinates. Trialkylamine (TAA) was used as an extractant for rhenium recovery and di-2- ethylhexylphosphoric acid was used for zinc recovery. Optimal liquid-liquid extraction parameters have been defined allowing the recovery of 96% rhenium in crude ammonium perrhenate and 94% zinc in sulfuric acid solution. Based on the experimental data, the flowchart for dust processing to produce salable products - lead, rhenium, zinc salts has been suggested."

As a kind of complex physicochemical process, grinding would affect the subsequent mineral processing such as flotation considerably. In this study, the effect of wet grinding on malachite and calcite flotation using sodium oleate as collector was studied. And the mechanism of the effect of grinding was investigated. Laboratory scale grinding and flotation testing of malachite and calcite samples were performed. Different grinding media were used, including steel balls and zirconia balls. It was the aim of this work to study the effect of grinding on the pulp chemistry paying particular attention to flotation recovery. The effect of grinding media and different addition location of sodium oleate on malachite and calcite flotation was studied. The methodology used in this project involved grinding the ore with and without the addition of sodium oleate in mill, measuring the pH and metal ions produced by minerals after grinding, adding various quantities of sodium oleate and determining the copper recovery. The presence of species of products on the minerals after grinding was probed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and the metal ions produced by minerals after grinding were measured by atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). It is showed that the mil-ling environments evaluated significantly affected the flotation of malachite and calcite. This study also discusses the effecting mechanism of grinding environment on floatability of malachite and calcite.

Low-grade bauxite with A/S of 4.4 from Henan province was used as raw material and the selec-tive grinding of bauxite, grinding efficiency, particle size and Al2O3 and SiO2distributions of ground products were investigated using ball and vibration mills. The results show that the selective grinding can be used to realize the separation of aluminum from silicon within a certain particle size. The optimal grinding conditions of the ball mill with bauxite are as follows: grinding material to charge ratio, 1.2, charge volume ratio, 40%, pulp con-centration, 70wt%, medium size distribution, F30mm:F20mm:F15mm=20%:50%:30%. Under the conditions, the weight rate of ground product with A/S over 7.5 is 27% and the recovery of Al 2O3is 30%. The optimal grinding condition of the vibration mill with bauxite are as follows: grinding material to charge ratio, 0.9; charge volume ratio, 70%; concentration, 70%; medium size distribution, F40mm:F30mm:F20mm=20%:30%:50%. Under the conditions, the weight ratio of ground product with A/S over 7.5 is 25% and the recovery of Al 2O3is 27%. The research is significant for the rational and economical utilization of the low-grade bauxite.

"The advent of digital revolution has now enabled us with numerous tools that could be leveraged to transform our operational data into actionable insights. Key opportunities with digitization include better visualization, transparency, integrated planning and execution for value-chain optimization, that results in smarter production, intelligent response to changes in ore, process and equipment conditions, reduce energy and waste along with prevention of asset breakdown, safety and environmental issues. It is important to realize that these digital tools have limited value, from a metallurgical operational context, if we cannot bring-in the appropriate domain expertise along with getting the basics right. The focus within Barrick is to ensure that there is adequate depth of different disciplines built into our platforms along with breadth to integrate other disciplines such as geology and mining for an effective Mine-to-Mill integration. A gold recovery improvement strategy based on optimal Gaudin size distribution, leaching performance monitoring and guidance via feed grade maps is discussed. Simultaneous identification of process and equipment constraints enable finding the best overall conditions for Gold recovery. This paper discusses the methodology, findings, and challenges in the ongoing journey of implementing a Metallurgy Analytics platform that evolves from being retrospectively descriptive to anticipatively prescriptive.INTRODUCTION The last few decades have seen some remarkable advancement in information technology, but recently various digital technologies have resulted in several synergies to deliver innovation in diverse applications. The mining industry has been relatively slow in adopting these technologies compared to the other industries, but this scenario is changing fast. Mining companies globally are going through a series of challenges such as declining ore grades with complex metallurgy, increasing depth of ore bodies, high capital and operating costs, lower productivity, shortage of technical resources, significant pressure from stakeholders to deliver, along with growing environmental and corporate social responsibility issues. The bioremediation of zinc was carried out using Pseudomonas alcaligenes, a Gram negative heterotroph. The parameters such as pH, bacterial cell number, initial metal concentration, and interaction time on the biosorption of zinc were studied. The maximum zinc uptake was found to be about 95% at pH 5 and biomass loading of 2.7x1010cells/mL. The biosorption isotherm for zinc exhibited Langmuirian behavior and the Gibbs free energy of biosorption was determined to be -31.2 kJ/mol, indicative of coordination of zinc with the functional groups on the bacterial surface. The adsorption kinetics followed a pseudo-second order equation. FTIR and EDAX studies confirmed the interaction of zinc with the biomass. The mechanisms of metal-microbe interactions are discussed.

ACC ECOSAND is finely powdered crystalline silica, which can replace natural sand usage in concrete and plasters. ACC ECOSAND ensures a comparatively denser concrete than those made only with natural sand and / or quarry fines / Manufactured Sand (Artificial Sand). Moreover, there is a significant gain in compressive strength (10-15 %) & durability in concretes (Reduced chloride conductivity leads to increased durability). ECOSAND is a by-product of froth flotation of limestone. At ACC Madukkarai cement works, Coimbatore, Tamilnadu, full-fledged mineral beneficiation process is adopted to enhance the usage of flotation reject in concrete and plasters. Optimum level for usage of ECO-SAND is 50%. With 50% usage of natural sand+50% ECO-SAND in concrete mix, 1 day, 3 day, 7 day & 28 day compressive strength is increased by 30.1 %, 22.6 %, 15.1 % & 11.0 % respectively and with moderate chloride permeability as compare to 100% Natural Sand. "Biosorption is an innovative technology used to remove heavy metals from aqueous solutions from mining waters and other industrial wastes. A wider application of this alternative process is strictly dependent on the understanding of the chemico-physical aspects involved, in order to optimize the operating conditions. Mechanistic models are the most useful tools used for understanding purposes, even if the empirical models are still widely applied for their simplicity.In this paper especially propagated biomasses of Sphaerotilus natans, calcium alginate and some waste materials were tested as adsorbents for single and binary solutions containing heavy metals at different pH. The equilibrium experimental results were fitted according to empirical and physical models with growing complexity outlining the inadequacy of the predictive models; in fact, the non-ideal interactions among metals require the insertion of additional correction parameters."

TiO2 is an ideal material for catalytic technology due to its unique properties. In this paper, Sm3+ doped TiO2 photo-catalyst was developed to improve the efficiency of TiO2 and to use the natural light as irradiation source, which was made from Titanium Tetrabutoxide and Samarium Oxide with the Sol-Gel process. The Sm3+-TiO2 photocatalyst was used to degrade reactive orange 4 (RO4) in Azo Dyes. The effects of solution pH, Sm3+ concentration and catalytic time on the degradation rate of RO4 were studied. The characteristics of the catalyst were analyzed with XRD and TEM. The experimental results show that the catalyst has high activity in the degradation of RO4. The Azo bonds of RO4 are active and easily broken by oxidation. The catalytic activity of the Sm3+ doped catalyst greatly depends on the pH of solution. The catalyst has high photo-catalytic activity at both neutral and alkaline conditions. The degradation mechanism of the Sm3+ doped TiO2 photo-catalyst was also discussed.

Chromium ore exploitation has commenced in 1948 in Albania and there are produced about 24.3 million tons up to the end of 2006. Last years the prices and need were increased notably. Main export of chromium ores and concentrates was accomplished respectively 114 500 ton and 13 000 ton in People Republic of China during 2006 year. Location, status, reserves and grade of chromium deposits of Albania are presented in the paper. Chromium ore enrichment is related with their composition and Cr2O3 content, as well as with market requests. Actually, high grade chromium ores with Cr2O3 content over 38% ~ 40% are directly exported or treated in metallurgy, but last time have been exported and chromium ores with 28% ~ 30% Cr2O3 content for the reason that dressing plants can not be operated for investment lack. High grade chromium ores have been treated in heavy media separation plant before 1990. It is presented flow sheet, figures and necessity to put in operation HMS plant in the paper. Actually, low grade chromium ores with content 16% ~ 20% Cr2O3 are not enriched for the lack of investments, but before 1990 they have been concentrated in dressing plants producing chromium concentrates grade 48% ~ 50% Cr2O3. In the paper are shown technological schemes and industrial figures during more than 20 years operation and possibilities to reconstruct these mineral processing plants. Only chromium mineral processing plant of Bulqiza is in operation using as raw material its old existing tailings. The flow sheet and figures show that are possibilities to increase recovery and grade of concentrate in the plant. Separation and concentration of slimes in suitable equipment gives visible improvement of Cr2O3 recovery. Several tests have been carried out with flotation and magnetic separation methods for enrichment of low grade chromium ores. Flow sheet and figures of mineral processing ores content olivine as gangue mineral are interesting, because combination of gravimetric with magnetic methods is necessary in this case. In the paper are presented the tests and good results of low chromium ore pre concentration. Metallurgical treatment of chromium ores to produce Ferro chrome, as well as technological process, figures, consume of electrical power and materials in Elbasani and Burreli furnaces are shown and necessary investments to treat in metallurgy all produced chromium ores in Albania are considered.

"Lithium is the lightest of the metals, with high reactivity and great electrochemical potential. It has a low thermal expansion coefficient and high caloric value, and it forms very light and resistant aluminium alloys. These properties make lithium an attractive element for use in battery manufacture and glass and ceramics production, in addition to its applications in the aeronautic industry. Today, two sources of raw material are economically viable for lithium production: pegmatite rocks and brine. The world production, in 2012, was approximately 150,000 tons of LCE (lithium carbonate equivalent), almost triple the production in 2000. The forecasted consumption for the current year, 2013, was approximately 162,000 tons of LCE, and for 2020, it could be as much as 280,000 tons of LCE, stimulated essentially by the growth of world production of electric (EV), hybrid (HEV) and hybrid plug-in vehicles (PHEV), the batteries of which are based on Li-ions. With the growth of world demand and increasing prices, lithium minerals such as spodumene, petalite and amblygonite, once considered uneconomical for the production of lithium carbonate, are regaining their economic value. New projects to produce lithium compounds based on mineral sources are being developed in many countries, aiming to produce battery-grade lithium carbonate (99.95% Li2CO3). Although Brazil has large lithium pegmatite reserves, the domestic production of lithium carbonate and hydroxide is very low, at approximately 600 tons of LCE, which represents 0.4% of the world production. The application of these products is mostly in the grease and ceramic industries. The national lithium market is under government protection due to its potential use for nuclear purposes. Thus, the industrialization activities and import and export of ores and lithium minerals, as well as organic and inorganic products, such as metallic lithium and lithium alloys, are controlled by the National Commission for Nuclear Energy (Comissão Nacional de Energia Nuclear - CNEN). The objectives of this work to quantify the real lithium demand in the Brazilian market, considering that a large amount of lithium is indirectly imported in the form of the Li-ion batteries used in equipment such as mobile phones, cameras, tablets, notebooks and e-bikes, and to compare this demand with the current national production of LCE. Finally, some technological alternatives will be discussed, with the aim of increasing the competitiveness of the lithium industry in Brazil."

Commercially available flotation technologies for recovery of mineral fines have remained essentially unchanged for several decades. Recent studies have focused simply on improving mechanical and open column cells. Such studies have explored different control strategies and have aimed to improve reagent selectivity, fine air bubble generation and particle-air contact. However, no study has questioned whether current techniques are the most efficient technology for recovering mineral fines. Given that both mechanical and open column cells have a widely accepted carrying capacity limitation, the lack of extensive research into an alternative technology is surprising. Most recently, open column flotation has become an entrenched technology, and it is undermining the efficient recovery of mineral fines worldwide. An alternative exists. Packed column flotation overcomes the above-stated problems as the technology surpasses the carrying capacity limitation of current means by several-fold and almost always achieves the best performance in many comparative pilot tests and full-scale plant operations. Filling a column with packing plates creates a network of sloped walls capable of supporting a froth bed many times deeper than conventional machines. Having froth up to 75 percent of the total column volume tolerates all feed changes encountered in the plant environment and permits maximum flexibility in concentrate quality control. Furthermore, its scale-up is straightforward by increasing column volume or the number of interconnected small cells. As the air breaks upon rising and is distributed horizontally through packing plates, the air spargers can be replaced with a simple blower, resulting in considerable savings in operation and maintenance costs. Packed flotation technology provides a break-through solution for the separation of fine and ultra-fine minerals. Its simplicity, superior performance, and low cost structure make it an appealing alternative to current technologies and allow greater flexibility in downstream processing. Future industrial applications include a wide variety of metallic and non-metallic ores. This paper focuses on some recent scale-up campaigns for nickel and copper sulphide flotation applications compared directly to conventional equipment.

"Throughout its operation, Minera Esperanza (ME) will deposit one of the largest tonnages rates of high density tailings in the world with a solids concentration of close to 67% by weight. The tailings presently being deposited have a solids concentration of approximately 62% - 64%, and so cannot be used to directly characterize the flow and deposition characteristics of the higher concentration tailings. To increase the knowledge of the behaviour of their tailings, ME, with the support of Golder Associates, developed a large scale tailings deposition test with a capacity of 30,000 tonnes per day (1,200 m3/h). The test was carried out by depositing tailings into two large cells or paddocks in five stages. Multiple spigots were used to allow different flows to be deposited. At each stage, topographical surveys of the natural terrain and the geometry of the deposited tailings, as well as continuous flow measurement and periodical rheological characterization of the discharged tailings were conducted to create a data set against which beach slope models could be calibrated and then used to predict performance of the higher concentration tailings under different deposition scenarios. This study adopted the beach slope prediction model proposed by A.L. Li (Li, 2011). The model was successfully adjusted to the observations made during this large scale field test by applying the values measured in-situ. This paper presents the application of the model, the results obtained, the findings, and the analysis of possible future scenarios. The model was applied, using the discharge flow rate, the geometrical characteristics of the discharge area, and the rheology with its variation along the beach to estimate the development of the beach formation and the steady state of the beach slopes. Through the use of dimensionless variables, the model was applied to higher solids concentration scenarios, obtaining results that would allow beach slope estimation at different deposition stages in multiple scenarios of varying parameters such as flow, rheology and geometry of discharge area."

"The flexibility of the PlantStar control platform has enabled Mintek to investigate and easily develop new control strategies for both milling and flotation. This includes a Solids Feed Controller, a Safety Limit Controller, Mill Power Optimiser and Flotation Optimiser, amongst others.The solids feed controller was developed for minerals processing plants using a specialised time delay compensator. Using conventional time delay compensators that are purely model based, results in robustness problems due to model uncertainties. The Mintek Solid Feeds Controller makes use of a plant model, but compensates for model inaccuracies, giving more controller stability and a more robust delay compensation algorithm.The safety limit controller has been developed to switch smoothly between normal and safety control loops without bumping the process. The safety loop output is chosen in accordance with a predefined list of priorities and whether the respective constraint boundaries are exceeded.The Mill Power Optimiser helps to find the power peak on the mill power curve. This insures maximum grind with maximum throughput. It also prevents power dips due to mill overloads, making the milling circuit easier to operate.The flotation optimiser algorithm analyses trends of all accessible variables in the process. The algorithm uses this information to calculate operating conditions that will control the residence times, mass pulls and circulating loads within a flotation circuit to a specified setpoint. Research is being done to now optimise these setpoints in order to achieve better recovery."

"Thiol collectors including the xanthates and dithiophosphates have dominated the sulfide mineral processing industry for over a century. Tecflote represents completely different chemistry, without sulfur or phosphorus, and will float all sulfides and associated precious metals. As these collectors are surfactant in nature, they comprise a head group which binds to mineral surfaces, a spacer and a long hydrophobic tail. The modification of the spacer behind the head group allows for collector optimisation for different sulfide ore types and process conditions.The Tecflote surfactants have been designed to be either very selective against pyrite at the natural pH of the ore (pH 7-9) or to float all sulfides including pyrite. Depending on the ore type and the process flow sheet, the use of lime can be maintained, reduced or completely eliminated.Tecflote can be used either as a rougher collector giving good recovery and grade for the sulfide minerals or it can be used to target valuable minerals after regrind and through cleaner flotation. It has repeatedly shown to be very effective at holding onto gold through the cleaner steps. The low solubility has a significant impact on the mechanism and surface activity of the collector, resulting in a very different flotation response compared to conventional thiol collectors.INTRODUCTIONXanthate was first made in 1882 by Zeise and first used in flotation in 1924 (Keller, 2018). In 1946 Keller patented thionocarbamate as a collector, which was produced by Dow Chemicals (Keller, 2018). Later it was replaced by Dow product Z-200, while dialkylthionocarbamate was discovered by Harris et al. (Harris, 1954. No significant chemistry change to collectors has occurred since they were introduced in the mid-20th century and now that the feed grades have been declining over the last decades creating a need to find more selective collectors to extract difficult and complex ores and pushing the industry to look at other reagents."
