The purpose of this research is to evaluate the impact of Building Information Modeling (BIM) on Just-In-Time (JIT) material delivery, with a focus on how the use of BIM can help improve efficient implementation of JIT and reduce the cost of material management. Previous research and a number of case studies have addressed the positive impact of BIM on construction at large but none focused on JIT in construction. This paper presents a methodology for selecting reliable material vendors. It also utilises the integration of BIM and scheduling software to generate quantities of material and its required delivery time to improve the flow process and improve its reliability to minimise related delays and productivity losses arising from idle and non-productive time of equipment and labour on jobsites. 4D visualization is utilized to support coordination and timing of JIT material deliveries in an effort to minimize congestion on job sites. Case studies on JIT material deliveries are presented and the impact of BIM implementation on reducing the cost of material management is evaluated. The joint effect of BIM and JIT on quality control, elimination of waste, reduction of inventory buffers, and on relationships with material vendors are evaluated by analysing and comparing data from case studies. The paper also presents a methodology based on multi-attribute decision criteria for modelling the selection criteria for material vendors. The model can assist in ranking vendors not only based on cost and quality but also on their reliability in delivering material on time.

The Buzwagi Project is owned by Barrick Gold Corporation and located in the Lake Victoria Goldfields of central Tanzania in the District of Kahama in the Region of Shinyanga. The property is 6 km Southeast of the town of Kahama, 3 km South and adjacent to the road between Nzega and Burundi. The Buzwagi property is 97 km South of Barrick?s Bulyanhulu Mine. There is access to the rail line which connects from Isaka to the Indian Ocean coastal ports of Dares Salaam and Tanga. The Feasibility Study and permitting were started in early 2006. Project Execution commenced in August 2007. Process Plant commissioning started in January 2009 and the first gold pour is scheduled for Q2 2009. The reserve has been established as 3.3M oz of gold plus 177M lbs of copper. The project has been developed to include a 30Mtpa Open Pit Mine and 4.4 Mtpa Process Plant. Over an expected 15 year mine life, Buzwagi is anticipated to produce approximately 3.02M oz of gold and 220,000 tonnes of copper concentrate. Infrastructure associated with the project includes a 107 km 220kV power line, site accommodation, water harvest and extensive security facilities. The project is expected to be built on budget and on time during a period of extreme market volatility. This paper reviews the initiatives taken to achieve community support, control cost escalation, maintain schedule and manage logistic challenges, plus ensure security and safety of all workers.

"Economic high density mineral reclamation and subsequent transportation of solids through a pipeline presents many formidable engineering problems.Mineral reclamation system design by theoretical formulas is almost impossible because solids composition, ie. concentration, velocity, moisture content, solid size, etc. can only be controlled within a broad pumping range.Traditionally this has restricted pumping to relatively dilute slurries whereas it is usually preferred, because of economic considerations to reclaim as high a concentration as possible.At Toyo/De-Velde Corp. we recognized these pumping limitations and began to develop and manufacture a range of standard and auxiliary equipment that would exceed these technical restrictions.MATERIAL RECLAMATION & PIPELINE INJECTIONTo minimize fluid usage and increase material reclamation efficiency we designed a submersible dredge mixing pump that uses most of its energy to pick up material from rest, mix it with fluid into a highly concentrated slurry then push it firmly into a pipeline.Where material is too compacted to be mined by the standard submersible mixer pump, auxiliary high torque self contained submersible excavators can be fitted around the periphery of the mixer pump. This is to facilitate excavation and break up of the compacted material into a slurry.High flexibility of this system can be achieved by combining the many equipment variations available into the most efficient format to fit individual site requirements.Whatever combination of equipment is selected, torque is nullified by counter rotating excavators against each other. This increases effective excavator/material bite torque but also allows mixer/excavator rig suspension by cable for deep water material recovery."

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Feasibility Studies (FS) were carried out to evaluate the potential use of treated acid mine drainage (AMD) occurring at the Kingsmill Tunnel in the Central Andes of Peru. The 11-km long tunnel drains the underground works of the Morococha Mining District and discharges about 1.25 m3/sec of AMD directly into the Yauli River, which is located within the Amazon Basin. The communities living downstream cannot use the Yauli River water due to its low pH and elevated concentrations of metals (e.g., Cu, Zn, Fe, Mn, As, Cd) and sulfate. Studies carried out for this project included technical feasibility, EIA, economic viability and social impact assessment phases. During the "Technical Feasibility" phase, the treated AMD was produced by simulating a high density sludge (HDS) lime neutralization/precipitation process and was evaluated for various potential uses. Mining companies located in Morococha, in particular Centromin Peru S.A., and the Water Works Company of the City of Lima (Sedapal) collaborated with Golder Associates during the studies. The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) provided the financial assistance. The results of the physical, chemical, biological and toxicological analyses demonstrated that the treated AMD could be used for supplementing the drinking water supply of Lima and for agricultural (e.g., irrigation and livestock) and recreational purposes. Process design and scale-up parameters were also determined for the implementation of the full-scale treatment facility to the site. The use of the treated AMD as a drinking water supplement would be economically feasible.

The previous survey of world copper smelters was in 2016 (Copper, 2016). The copper smelting industry has grown and improved considerably since then, including continuing growth in China and modernization in Japan (Extraction, 2018). Outotec flash smelting and Outotec flash smelting/Kennecott - Outotec flash converting continue to be adopted while newer processes continue to be adopted in China. In addition, some of the world's original flash furnaces have been completely rebuilt (Extraction, 2018). This paper provides recent industrial production data and discusses these new developments. INTRODUCTION A world copper survey was redone in 2016 after a thirteen year lag since 2003. Some of the notable changes were the significant increases in production particularly from China. Since then, several smelters have gone through modernization processes and decommissioning of older technologies. This paper will review the notable changes since the last publication at Cu2016. In the last paper, Copper Smelting: 2016 World Copper Smelter Data, the author gave an audible sigh after observing that copper smelter sites as well as new and notable smelters have been spreading like wildfire in China since 2003. Indeed, seeing is believing. Figure 1 shows the Ningde Copper Smelter (double flashing, 400,000 MT Cu/Year capacity) that started up producing copper in 2018; Figure 2 shows the Nanguo Copper Smelter that is under construction with 300,000 MT Cu/Year capacity (first phase, side blown smelting and continuous top blown converting). We should not only admire the Chinese copper industry’s significant technological developments, but also the copper price support that it has provided throughout this century.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) research under the MEND program has been ongoing since 1988 at the Heath Steele Mines waste rock piles including sulphide material, outside Newcastle, NB. In 1989 approximately 10,000 mt of waste rock was placed on a prepared sand base with an underlying impermeable membrane. The waste rock pile was heavily instrumented for measuring oxygen concentrations and temperatures. In September 1991, a composite soil cover designed for the Heath Steele climatic conditions, using local soils, was placed over the pile, creating a totally enclosed system. Moisture content and oxygen probes were installed within the composite soil cover to monitor changes within the soils over time, while two large-size lysimeters were installed below the cover to monitor the hydraulic conductivity of the cover. The waste rock site has been monitored on a monthly basis since installation of the cover, for performance of both cover and waste rock. The monitoring shows very clearly that the placement of the composite soil cover has had a major impact on the generation of AMD. Major reductions in temperature and oxygen concentrations within the waste rock pile indicate that the cover has significantly inhibited the oxidation reaction that generates the AMD. Performance data have shown that the cover has maintained its integrity under the climatic conditions of the area.

The past decade shows record increases in global demand for minerals and metals with an accompanying significant decline in skilled personnel. Mining companies today are examining new technologies to maximize production, reduce costs, and create safer work conditions to deal with this shortfall. Automation of an open-pit mine haulage system is receiving attention as a beneficial option since it provides more consistent and efficient operation of mining equipment, it removes workers from potential danger, it reduces fuel consumption significantly reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and it can help optimize vehicle repairs and equipment replacement because of more-predictable and better-controlled maintenance. This paper describes a simulation model under development using the EXTENDSIM software package to examine scale-up issues and constraints of autonomous vehicles in comparison to a manual system. The software can predict and manage Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), such as productivity, safety, cost, equipment failures, fuel consumption, and tire wear under different road and load conditions. By breaking-down the various systems of an autonomous haulage truck and simulating the overall haulage system using a Monte Carlo approach, the model becomes a flexible and powerful tool to use within a mining organization. Direct comparison to a manuallyrun system can be done to show the cost and operational benefits of automation. Project managers can use this tool to guide decision-making about possible application of autonomous haulage trucks at a specific mine site.

Canada?s energy future will increasingly depend on a supply of light, sweet crude oil derived from the Athabasca oil sands deposit of North-eastern Alberta. Billions of dollars are being spent on the construction of new and expanded mine and bitumen extraction plants, in situ recovery facilities, pipelines, upgrading installations and all the infrastructure needed to support these projects. The success of the existing operators has also inspired new players, anxious for ?a piece of the action? to come forward with exciting project proposals of their own. None of this investment and spin-off economic activity would be taking place today if events had unfolded differently in this part of the world some one hundred million years ago. The accumulation of sand in rivers, estuaries and in the near-shore marine environment created the great reservoirs that host the enormous oil deposits these projects are designed to exploit. Mine operators of all stripes will likely agree that there are few good ?geological surprises?. With specific reference to oil sand deposits, the geological history determines the distribution of sand, silt and clay bodies, which in turn controls the ore grade. Important design factors including everything from stable pit slope angles to tailings properties reflects events that took place millions of years before. An understanding of the sequence of events that resulted in deposition and preservation of the sediment and oil are important to sound design for both mining and in situ facilities. A geological history of the region is described. Site-specific examples from Syncrude?s operating mines are used to illustrate some of the geological factors that can present design challenges.

"Newmont Mining Corporation’s Carlin (“Carlin”) operation processes roaster feed through a double rotator, dry grinding mill following secondary crushing. Metso Process Technology & Innovation (“PTI”) was involved in a review of crushing and dry grinding circuit operations in August 2009. A number of opportunities for increased throughput were identified in the PTI study.Extended plant trials were conducted in July 2010 to provide justification for possible circuit modifications and if needed, additional equipment. The trials confirmed that a finer crusher product would reduce the build-up of material ahead of the coarse grinding chamber in the double-rotator. Also revealed were material transport and airflow restrictions in the dry grinding circuit that resulted in a high circulating load.The secondary crushing plant demonstrated it was capable of reducing the amount of +¾” material in the mill feed thus increasing dry grinding throughput. However, wet and sticky feed affected screening efficiency resulting in low utilisation of the existing crusher capacity. The open circuit configuration also made it difficult to control crushing circuit product size.For the dry grinding circuit, changes in grinding media size, transfer grate design and increased airflow were recommended to reduce circulating load issues and increase circuit capacity. This paper summarises the crushing and grinding circuit review, the extended site trials performed by PTI and the improvements in dry grinding operation that resulted from this study."

The combined capacity is 590 tons per day consisting of 415 t.p.d. of Upper Canada gold ore and 175 t.p.d. of Upper Beaver copper-gold ore.The Upper Beaver ore is trucked five miles to the Upper Canada mine site.Crushing:The crushing circuit consists of primary, secondary and tertiary crushing employing one C .A. C. 15 in. x 24 in. Superior jaw crusher, one 4 ft. x 8 ft. Tyler-Niagara double deck screen, one 3 ft. Symons standard cone crusher and one 3 ft. Symons shorthead cone crusher.The -2 in. product from the jaw crusher is fed to the double deck screen. The+ 5/ 8 in. passes over the top deck to the 3 ft. standard cone crusher; the+ 3/ 16 in. material passes over the lower deck to the shorthead cone crusher. The - 3 / 16 in. material pas sing through the lower deck of screens is the product to the mill.The screens used prior to the installation of rubber screen cloths were: one 4 ft. x 4 ft. section with 3/ 4 in. square openings and one 4 ft. x 4 ft. section with 5/ 8 in. square openings on the top deck; two 4 ft. x 4 ft. sections with openings of 3/16 in. x 4 1/2 in. slot on the lower deck. The fine screens were positioned so that the 4 1/ 2 in. slots were parallel to the flow of feed.The crushing circuit is operated on a three shift per day basis by one operator per shift."

"The zone of economic interest at H.J. Joel Gold Mine is the VS5/Beatrix Composite Reef, a quartz-pebble conglomerate of Archean age. The reef occurs at the base of the Eldorado Formation, Central Rand Group, of the Witwatersrand Supergroup. At least three stratigraphically distinct conglomerates form this economic zone. In order of deposition these are the Footwall, Beatrix, and the VS5/Beatrix reefs. The Footwall and Beatrix reefs are equated with the Aandenk Formation with transport directions toward the northwest, whereas the VS5lBeatrix Reef is of Eldorado age, with transport directions toward the south. The change in the drainage direction was caused by a major basin-wide tectonic event that occurred prior to the deposition of the Eldorado Formation. The Beatrix Reef was formed in a proximal, braided, fluvial environment by a process of aggrading gravel bars between channelways. The VS5/Beatrix Reef was formed by the desegregation of pre-existing Beatrix Reef with the introduction of new material containing much shale detritus and is seen to have been deposited in a more -distal, braided, fluvial environment, similar to the Beatrix Reef.The average gold concentrations are different for each conglomerate; the Beatrix at 32.1 ppm Au, the Footwall at 24.4 ppm Au, and the VS5/Beatrix at only 12.4 ppm Au. A sedimentary gold concentrating process related to higher energy braid channels was primarily responsible for these high gold grades. Not only the basal unconformity surface, but also, internal degredation surfaces, were prime sites for concentration. An understanding of the spatial distribution of these differing conglomerates and their braid channels forming the economic reef zone is necessary in predicting ore grades for future mining."

De nos jours, Jes restrictions en matière de protection de l'environnement obligent Jes opérateurs miniers a trouver Jes solutions Jes plus efficaces pour préserver Jes sites environnants de la pollution due a l'oxydation des sulfures. Cette oxydation cause une acidification accrue du milieu et une mise en solution des metaux toxiques. L'utilisation des recouvrements multicouches est l'une des solutions Jes plus efficaces pour limiter la pollution liée au DMA mais entraine des coilts de construction qui sont souvent considérés par l'industrie miniere comme prohibitifs. Une façon de rendre cette technologie applicable, d'un point de vue économique, est de désulfurer Jes résidus à l'usine de traitement et d'utiliser la fraction inerte comme composante d'un recouvrernent multicouche. Cette opération de desulfuration peut etre réalisée par flottation non sélective des résidus dans le but d'obtenir d'une part un faible volume de concentré de sulfures qui devra être géré convenablement et d'autre part un rejet non générateur d'acide.

"A series of flotation tests was carried out on Brunswick Mining ore with various pH modifiers (soda ash, lime, KOH) and added ions (ferric, nitrate, sulphate) in the copper lead rougher circuit. The main objective was to identify downstream effects on sphalerite activation and subsequent zinc rougher flotation. Some significant differences in zinc flotation were obtained. Most notably, soda ash and nitrate ions had a positive impact and ferric ions a pronounced negative effect on selectivity.Selected products from the flotation tests were deslimed at 400 mesh, washed with methanol, air dried, placed in teflon vials purged with nitrogen and stored at -15 degrees C. Numerous liberated sphalerite and pyrite particles were selected under a stereoscope and placed in rows on indium foil. The surface compositions of the particles were analyzed with an innovative laser probe (LIMS). The very small analysis area of the LIMS enables the surfaces of individual grains to be characterized. In addition, the rapid analysis time allows a statistically significant number of grains to be analyzed quickly.Surface lead appears to play a major role in zinc activation/flotation. Possible mechanisms are proposed to explain the variations in metallurgical performance at the different test conditions.IntroductionAlthough the bulk composition of mineral grains is an important consideration for the mineral processor it is ultimately surface composition and topography (edges and dislocations preferred sites for reactions) that control reactivity in flotation and cyanidation (passivation, encapsulation and preg-robbing). Mines in Canada and the United States are subject to regulations limiting ammonia, nitrate and nitrite levels in mine effluents released into the environment. The primary source of these nitrogen compounds is typically explosive used in blasting operations, as ammonium nitrate (AN) remains a significant component of most explosives used in the mining industry. The amount of AN entering a local water drainage system is related to site conditions, explosives used, explosive handling and blast efficiency. Mining operators acknowledge AN loss to mine water from blasting operations. However, the mechanisms by which ammonia, nitrite and nitrate are entering the water drainage system, or the relative contribution of specific mechanisms, may not necessarily be assessed or monitored adequately. Characterization of these mechanisms, through systematic investigations, allows a mining operation to focus its efforts on reducing AN loss. This paper outlines a strategy for investigating the mechanisms through which AN enters the mine water drainage system and methods to mitigate this loss. This strategy includes collection and analysis of data to identify and quantify the AN loss mechanisms, design and implementation of tests to mitigate this loss, and assessment of the results. Such investigations are not intended to be a separate one-time project, but part of a long-term process of continual feedback and optimization that is related to the collection and reporting of AN levels for regulatory purposes. The implementation of the strategy must be tailored to each mine?s requirements and existing conditions.

"The common style of gold mineralization in the Basal Reef and other auriferous conglomerates of the Witwatersrand Supergroup comprises clusters of gold grains occurring interstitially to quartz and pyrite pebbles as well as gold accumulations attached to the surface of and infilling hairline cracks and fractures in round, compact, detrital pyrite. The latter textural association is generally interpreted as a result of remobilization of originally detrital gold during regional metamorphism and related hydrothermal fluid circulation. There is general agreement that, although gold solubility was low, ore modification occurred during the metahydrothermal event, but uncertainty exists about the magnitude and scale of gold remobilization.Micro-textural and chemical investigation of compact round pyrite and associated gold accumulation has established that gold is preferentially deposited on chemically heterogeneous pyrite surfaces. Combinations of alternating high- and low-As zones in pyrite result in mixed np-type conductivity accompanied by electron exchange and the reduction-driven deposition of gold at the cathode. This model does not explain gold accumulations which are not immediately linked to chemical heterogeneities and it is inferred that an additional control on the deposition of gold was exerted by physical defects which lead to zones of increased charge density and/or areas of focussed conductivity. The inferred precipitation mechanisms suggest that submicrocopic physical and chemical controls are the important factors that determined the sites of gold nucleation and that precipitation mechanisms based on physicochemical changes of the hydrothermal system were not involved. The Basal Reef contains on average close to 5OJo of round, detrital, chemically zoned pyrite which provides a large number of electrochemically active pyrite surfaces. The extremely effective electrochemical precipi- . tation mechanism together with the low solubility of gold in Witwatersrand fluids is the main reason for the spatially restricted remobilization of gold in the conglomerate reefs."

"Geographic information systems (GIS) provide an efficient means for the recording, manipulation, revision, display and analysis of spatially referenced data. GIS are widely used at the exploration stage of mine development, and are increasingly used for reclamation planning. The ability of a GIS to perform spatial searches and query spatially referenced data make it a powerful tool for use at all stages of mine development. As the amount of data available for analysis increases, so does the power and flexibility of GIS as a planning tool.Starting from the exploration database, this paper describes how a GIS can be used for the development of mining plans based on topography, geology and mineralization information stored in a relational database. Planning decisions approaching the optimal can then be made for a wide range of parameters, including stockpile and waste dump locations, the location of potentially acid generating and neutralizing material for dump design, profitable and risk-controlled mine extraction sequencing, and haul road locations. This is made possible by the overlay and buffer analysis capabilities of a GIS which are explored and exploited to produce a continuous mine production planning program, as well as site remediation and reclamation using a successful case study. The Ore and ProductsThe mines in the Saskatoon area — Agrium, PCS-Cory, PCS-Allan, PCS-Patience Lake, PCS-Lanigan and IMC-Colonsay — extract the ore from the Patience Lake member. The mines in the southeast corner of Saskatchewan — IMC-K1 and K2, PCSRocanville — extract from the Esterhazy member, while IMC-Belle Plaine, near Regina, solution mines potassium chloride from both potash-bearing members.Ore from the Patience Lake member is a medium-grained mixture of sylvite and halite, with a KCl content of 36%, insolubles averaging up to 5.5%, and little or no carnallite.The ore from the Esterhazy member is a coarse-grained mixture of sylvite (KCl) and halite (NaCl) with a small amount of water insolubles, and some carnallite (a K-Mg chloride). Average run-of-mine grades are about 30% KCl."

Industrial complexes rely on measurements of flow rates, qualities, and concentrations for monitoring and optimizing their operation. Corporations use the data from the various sensors and measurements to make business decisions, which affect the profitability of the operation. However, gross errors, due to a variety of reasons like faulty sensors, bad instrument calibration, or incorrect process models may corrupt the actionable information supplied to operations, quality managers, and maintenance personnel. The solution is to use the sophisticated new tools to model the process, sift through the available data to locate the gross errors, and use statistical data reconciliation to validate the sensors and instruments. In this way the data are unified to give the most accurate plant information for use by the monitoring and decision making processes. Most mining and metallurgical plants use predictive maintenance policies based on statistical analysis and special techniques, like vibration analysis, and oil and lube analysis for critical equipment. Process control strategies are installed in several metallurgical sites. All of these depend on reliable and accurate data. The data unification methods validate the individual measurements by using the concept of balances and statistical techniques where each instrument is no longer independent of the other measurements in the facility. This paper refers to the data unification and analysis methods required for profitable plant operations. Continuous improvement and monitoring of the measurement system at the plant and analysis of the reconciled data provide the best information for the decision-making process. On-line gross error detection and elimination methods are required to ensure efficient evaluation of process performance and process optimization. An open discussion of the new methods for gross error detection and data unification will be presented.

"A frother analysis technique based on the formation of a colored solution with UV-VIS absorbance proportional to frother concentration over a certain range has been developed. The calculation of concentration requires the comparison of the sample absorbance at a selected wavelength with a linear calibration (frother concentration vs. absorbance) constructed with values collected from solutions of known concentration (standards) at the same wavelength. It has been found that concentration ranges for preparation of standards can vary widely. An integration of our experiences into a databank can offer some guidance on the selection of standard concentrations. The databank includes results from the analysis of 37 chemical reagents, commercial frothers, and natural oils used in research work or at industrial sites. Grouping frothers by similar chemical structure or origin provides a good basis for selecting the standards to approach the maximum absorbance range for the spectrophotometer in use.INTRODUCTIONA technique to determine frother concentration on samples of industrial milling streams based on formation of a colored solution with UV-VIS absorbance proportional to frother concentration has been developed. An original method is used to obtain stable nanoparticles of gold-based mono- and bimetallic systems supported on an acidic zeolite. This approach has been applied to PtHY (1wt% Pt) and to bimetallic Pt-AuHY containing 1% of platinum to which is added the amount of gold required to give Au/Pt molar ratios of 20,40,60 and 80%. Metal clusters of Au or Pt-AuHY are formed inside the supercages of the zeolite framework by the thermal reduction of cations by the ligands (en = H2N-CH2-CH2-NH2) under inert gas flow at a temperature depending on the metal. The use of acidic zeolites favours the dispersion of the metal and the thermal stability of the particles. This stability is explained by chemical anchoring of metal clusters by the Brønsted sites of the support. Several techniques have proved that for a molar ratio of 20% metal particles of Pt-AuHY are bimetallic. The segregation of Pt and Au starts for molar ratio =?40%. The catalysts tested on the methylcyclopentane hydroconversion reaction reveal that the addition of gold to platinum leads to an increase in the activity and an improvement in the selectivity for isomerization of the skeleton (cyclohexane and benzene) to the detriment of hydrogenolysis. Similar results were obtained for the dodecane isomerisation to isododecane. These catalysts were also tested in CO, propene and propane oxidation. The activity of fresh catalysts is rather low. It increases after their pretreatment in oxygen or hydrogen atmosphere. In propene oxidation in the reaction mixture O2 ? H2, beside total oxidation of propene to CO2, also propene hydrogenation was observed, particularly at low temperatures. The presence of Au enhances the hydrogenation properties: high selectivities (> 90%) to propane and high propane yields on PtAu HY are observed up to ~150oC, whereas for Pt HY catalyst the selectivity and yield to C3H8 decreases rapidly with the temperature beginning from ~100oC.
