The Airborne Thematic Mapper is an eleven channel digital scanner which acquires image data in the visible, near infra-red, short wave infra-red and thermal infra-red wave- lengths. A description of the system is presented which includes details of the operating wavelengths and performance parameters of the scanner. Consideration is also given to the aircraft installation requirements. During January 1984 the scanner surveyed the mineral rich areas of Leonora, Laverton and Kalgoorlie in Western Australia. This is a region of intense exploration activity for gold and base metals. Some 30,000 square kilometres were systematically surveyed in a period of ten days. This scanner was flown at 7,000 metres altitude giving a ground pixel size of 17.5 by 17.5 metres. The flight line spacing was 8 kilometres. The overall project took some thirty days from conception to completion. The planning and execution of this operation are described in detail. The resulting magnetic tapes provided 11 channels of digital image data over a 30,000 square kilometre area and a variety of image processing techniques were employed in order to capitalise fully on the results. The imagery provides a powerful tool for the geological mapping of the terrain. The data can also be used to monitor the environmental effects of mining operations.

WearApp provides expertise for assessing the degradation of removable screening media panels on vibrating screens right in a user’s pocket. Through the WearApp application, users can simply take a picture of a panel using their mobile, enter some basic information and have the application assess the wear to provide a recommendation for whether the panel needs to be replaced. Where traditional mechanisms for assessing panel wear only measure a few points across the panel face and rely on having personnel with specialised knowledge available to perform the assessment, WearApp uses deep learning models to analyse the entire panel face and support the user to make an informed decision. The application works through analysing a panel image and using a model to automatically detect the corners of the panel. Given the known dimensions of the panel, this enables the application to calibrate the pixel size against a known reference. A second set of models then detect the apertures and measure their dimensions. With the aperture dimensions defined the application assesses the wear of the panel through referencing a stored 3D model of the aperture. Finally, the data from each aperture is collated and the wear of the entire panel face defined. Since WearApp performs measurement of the entire panel face, it also allows the user to perform a more detailed analysis of the panel’s wear profile. Where typically, the panel wear is only measured in a few locations, WearApp’s analysis enables users to visualise the panel wear across the entire panel face, identifying areas of high wear that could be leading to premature panel replacement. Additionally, because the entire panel face is measured the change in screening efficiency can be calculated accurately for the worn panel, even taking into account the impact of aperture pegging by small rocks.

Oversize rock breaking and metal tramp removal are key issues for reducing primary crusher downtime, as well as improving the safety associated with its operation. Remote operation of such tasks would thus not only increase productivity, but also reduce the risks related to work in confined spaces, fall risks, and overhead hazards. These issues are particularly relevant in high-capacity operations such as iron ore mining, where large machines are in continuous operation. This article describes the architecture, construction and advanced testing of a novel remotely operated robotic mechanism for assessment and removal of metal tramp from primary crusher chambers. The system essentially includes a robotic-arm equipped with a hydraulic clamp tool for handling oversize material, as well as an oxy-flame module for cutting metal pieces entrapped within the primary crusher cavity. The first industrial unit was delivered to a large iron ore mine in Brazil, where the installation and testing is scheduled within the coming months.

The loss of 11 miners in the 7 August 1994 Moura No.2 Underground Mine Disaster was the catalyst for major change in the way safety was managed in the Australian Mining Industry. The impact was felt across all sectors not just underground coal. It was the catalyst for the overhaul of the regulatory frameworks, moving away from prescription to management systems and risk management. This had a substantial impact on the way not only the industry operated but also on how the regulator functioned. It heralded the introduction of competency-based training across all levels of the mining workforce. Since that time major improvements in safety performance have occurred. However, hiding within the statistics are some disturbing trends. This paper aims to analyse the progress made in the past 30 years and identify the current and emerging issues. Automation is bringing major production and safety benefits, but at the same time other factors such as the reduction in workforce numbers and ever-increasing production pressures are leading to high turnover rates. This in turn causes to a loss of experience and expertise. In addition, and of particular importance, is the recognition of psychosocial wellness on workforce safety. Many of these factors are not unique to the mining industry however they may be exacerbated by the scale of mining, the remoteness of the mines and family unfriendly mining rosters.

Northparkes is located 27 km north of the township of Parkes in central New South Wales, Australia. The operations consist of underground block cave mines and an ore processing plant, which produces high-grade copper and gold concentrate. Production is currently sourced from the E48 Lift 1 block cave mine and open cut stockpiles. Mining commenced at Northparkes in 1994 as an open cut operation. Underground block cave mining began in 1997. Northparkes was the first mine in Australia to use the highly efficient block cave mining method, which relies on gravity and natural rock stresses to fragment and recover the ore.The E48 extraction level is located approximately 581 m below surface and consists of ten extraction drives and 214 drawpoints. Several stress measurements carried out at various levels in both E26 and E48 indicated a low underground regional stress environment and a low to moderate stress state in the E48 orebody. The E48 block used a post undercut strategy that was initiated in 2009, with production commencing in September 2010 and cave-through to the surface occurring approximately four months later in January 2011. Changes to the cut-off grade and fixed prices meant that Northparkes was able to develop an additional two drives to the north of the existing cave and one additional drive to the south. Modelling of the cavability of the additional drives indicated that the cave would not readily propagate to sufficient height of draw to mobilise the ore and tended to arch over to the existing cave shape. Based on modelling and a desire to reduce the risk of the project, preconditioning was adopted. Along with the requirement of safely hydrofracturing an active cave, a measure of the success of the preconditioning was desired. In the present study, from experimental results, a new concept of possibility of flotation separation of quartz from feldspar is presented. The effect of the nonionic surfactant Brij 58 on the flotation behaviour of quartz and feldspar has been investigated. The effect of the surfactant adsorption at the solid-liquid interface was also studied. The results demonstrate that maximum flotability of quartz occurred at low concentration of surfactant. Feldspar is not collected by this surfactant. Flotation tests with feldspar that had previously been subjected to leaching by hydrochloric acid yielded similar flotation response as that of quartz. The effect of removal of alkali cations from feldspar surface on its flotability was investigated. The effects of inorganic and organic additives on the flotation recovery of quartz are discussed in terms of the slating-out or salting-in properties of these additives. "Continuous improvement on metallurgical treatment plants is possible only when good data and analysis of the data are available. Good data implies appropriate and accurate mass measurement coupled with good sampling practices and accurate chemical analysis especially when carrying out monthly metallurgical metal reconciliations. Adequate characterisation of key samples (eg tailings, feed, concentrates and others) at timely intervals is an important part of a good continuous improvement program. The data from this will help identify opportunities to improve operation performance and thus profitability. "An Outotec e500 TankCell, with 500 m³ of actual flotation volume, was commissioned at the Kevitsa Cu-Ni-PGE concentrator in northern Finland during 2014. This flotation cell was implemented at the head of the existing copper circuit as the first Cu rougher flotation cell. This was the first flotation cell of this size to be run under production conditions by any supplier anywhere in the world.The cell has been in continuous operation since start-up in October 2014 and has provided improvements in metallurgical performance at very low specific power consumption. On average, the cell has recovered 71 per cent of copper contained in the 0.37 per cent Cu flotation feed at a concentrate grade of 17 per cent Cu. The specific power consumption for the cell (excluding blower power) is typically around 0.4 kW/m³.After start-up, the impeller speed and superficial gas velocity were varied and the impact on metallurgical performance measured. In this paper a review of the cell operation at Kevitsa is given. Located 350 km west of Sydney and 20 km outside Orange, NSW, lies the Ridgeway Gold Mine û NewcrestÆs flagship Underground Gold Mine. Key to success at Ridgeway has been the fast tracked development of the 3.8 km, 1 in 5.3 conveyor decline which houses the 850 t/hr conveying system feeding the dedicated Ridgeway Concentrator, built adjacent to the existing Cadia Hill Concentrator. Eroc was contracted to develop the steep conveyor decline, drawing on its personnel and experience from past metalliferous, tunnelling and coal mining projects to complete the ambitious schedule within 12 months. This paper deals with the complexities and experiences in safely delivering what is understood to be one of AustraliaÆs steepest declines of any substantial length in a metalliferous mine.

Recent advances in the disciplines involved in simulating large mining operations provide increasingly precise and accurate methods for the study of cave mechanics; however, in large regional-scale models, hydrological aspects are often neglected or studied independently from the mechanical problem. There exists a great demand for a unified approach to study and simulate both the mechanical and hydrological phenomena that allows for a more detailed understanding of the effects of groundwater flow, dewatering and the impact on block cave mining operations.This paper presents a numerical framework that combines three-dimensional regional-scale hydrological simulation techniques for groundwater flow, together with non-linear continuum–discontinuum rock mechanics models, provides such a unified modelling approach. The underlying simulation technique is based on a coupled parallel solution formulation adopting single-phase fluid flow formulations into a discontinuous, strain softening and dilatant finite element model. This approach is adopted for the presented case study of a realistic block caving example in a simplified unidirectional coupling formulation, to investigate the effects of the mechanical analysis on the hydrological response. Here, particular emphasis is on the non-linear coupling of the deformable and strain-softening solid skeleton and fluid phase; eg the change of hydraulic properties with evolution of damage in the rock mass and large-to-intermediate scale structures due to ongoing caving operations. Accurate estimation of rock load and selection of types of ground reinforcement to match post-failure behaviour of rock mass are important issues to assure tunnel stability. This paper focuses on the main factors affecting rock load to evaluate the capabilities of the existing models for prediction of rock load. Rock mass properties, project features and excavation method, as well as ground conditions and stress condition were found to be the key factors affecting the magnitude of rock load. Field data from tunnels of about 37.5?km driven in several geological structures in non-squeezing ground was used in this study. An in depth statistical analysis was performed on data to find correlations between the input parameters and measured/observed rock load. A weighting system was proposed to obtain the proper contribution of each factor for estimation of rock load in tunnelling through various ground conditions. The new classification system offered predicted values for rock load that were in a good agreement with the actual field measurements. The high disturbance factor (D>0.4) was the prime factor which controlled the rock load. Tongkuangyu Copper Mine is currently the only mine in China employing block caving. It comprises two large orebodies known as the No 4 orebody and the No 5 orebody. They are approximately 50° in dip angle, 80 to 240 m in width and 800–1000 m in strike length. The two orebodies are separated by a distance of 110–130 m. Production with block caving originally, ie Phase 1 project started at Tongkuangyu from the first undercut at a depth of 200–300 m below the ground surface and designated as Lift 810 m in late 1989 and has continued to the present. During the last 25 years Tongkuangyu has mined three lifts: Lifts 810 m, 690 m and 530 m. The previous two lifts utilised a slusher process with an annual designed production rate of 4 Mt. In this context the lift name represents the elevation of track haul level.The Tongkuangyu Phase 2 project serves for two lifts (ie Lift 530 m and 410 m) under the elevation of 690 m and the annual designed production rate is 6 Mt. Since the orebody is approximately 50° in dip angle, it is originally designed that production at Lift 530 m is comprised of one main extraction level and two auxiliary extraction levels in the footwall and undercutting is started from one end of the extraction footprint forward to another end, which is from north-east to south-west.Production at Lift 530 m started from March 2011 and reached to 6.39 Mt in 2013 and 6.9 Mt in 2014. Additionally, Tongkuangyu improved block caving processes and used modern mining equipment, which differ from the previous two lifts. Blastholes for undercutting and drawbell-preparation are now drilled using jumbos. The blasted ore is transferred to the underground crushing station via 10 t electric load-haul-dumps (LHDs) and then delivered to surface via a belt conveyor 3200 m long.Due to increasing ground pressure, a consequence of mining depth increase, stress abutment and inadequate support, significant damage occurred at the Tongkuangyu Copper Mine with production at Lift 530 m. This resulted in significant production delays and rehabilitation costs. A series of improvements have since been implemented including an advanced undercut sequence and increased ground support. All of these improvements have allowed Tongkuangyu to alleviate ground control issues, reduce operating costs and ensure safe production.CITATION:Liu, Y M and Bian, K W, 2016. At Bulong, the mineralised (>0.8 per cent nickel) ore exists within numerous lithologies, which can and do occur coincidently. It is very important to discriminate between the different host units for estimation purposes, stockpiling and scheduling. This allocation of host unit has relied upon visual interpretation by the geologist recording the information, which can be very subjective by its nature. By using quantified constraints, such as assayed magnesium oxide and iron, the subjectivity of describing the host material of nickel laterite ore is reduced. The constraints permit consistent identification of the various host units, which improves the confidence in the overall estimation and scheduling of the ore.

Today underground infrastructures, like tunnels and especially wide spread underground mines, are often equipped with ethernet based communication systems. These networks are used for the unified communication of data, voice and video. As these networks stretch along the major tunnels and in increasing scale also into the production areas, a high degree of coverage can be reached. For wireless coverage, standard IEEE 802.11 WLAN access points are being used. In order to provide a maximum availability and reliability, the active components are equipped with battery backup power supplies and the network infrastructure is set up in a redundant way using ring or meshed topologies. This provides a much higher availability compared to traditional phone systems or dedicated data links using a conventional star topology.Distributed computing intelligence that is installed on active network nodes throughout the whole network, additionally supported by a central server system, creates the basis for new mine safety functions introduced in this paper for both coal and non-coal mining. These new safety functions cover the detection of potential emergencies, using the status of the network as a æsensorÆ, as well as dynamically guiding people to safe exits or rescue shelters in case of an emergency. Furthermore, these functions are of important benefit for improving the efficiency of search and rescue operations following a major incident or accident underground.

The high production rates achieved from mass mining methods such as block caving, sublevel caving and longwall mining require large conveyor belts, trucking loops (diesel/electrical) and rail systems for ore handling. However, the ore handling systems used in mass mines introduce a significant amount of heat into the overall ventilation system, which may be problematic at depth or in mines located in hot climates.In particular, the heat load from a conveyor system is not always well understood and consists of various components, including frictional heat from idlers, heat from electrical motors, heat from the drive train and heat from broken rock transported on the conveyor system. This paper presents results from a study that investigated the heat introduced to the ventilation air from a large conveyor system. The conveyor system transports ore with a maximum virgin rock temperature of 41°C from a depth of over 1 km. Monitoring for signs of elevated spontaneous combustion in the active goaf behind the longwall face is crucial for early intervention of any potential heating incidents. Typically, trigger action response plans (TARPs) are established at the start of longwall mining and often are only reviewed when triggers are activated frequently and become ‘nuisance alarms’, or in the worst case scenario after a heating event. Narrabri Mine has adopted a proactive approach of reviewing the longwall active goaf spontaneous combustion monitoring TARP at the commencement of each longwall block and prior to reaching a known ‘mylonite zone’ of crushed coal, which is associated with increased coal oxidation. The review is based on information recorded from the monitoring data of the previous longwall blocks as well as interpretation of relevant spontaneous combustion propensity results for the coal. This has resulted in the mine implementing a zoned TARP approach for each longwall block covering both the longwall retreat through normal undisturbed coal and the zone where the goaf is influenced by the increased coal oxidation associated with the mylonite coal. The consequence of this approach is that it has removed the issue of having nuisance triggers being activated during mining through a known increased oxidation zone, while maintaining a high awareness of indicators of spontaneous combustion.CITATION:Baxter, H, Claassen, C, Salisbury, O, Brady, M and Beamish, B, 2015. BHP has recently constructed a Hot Briquetted Iron Plant at Port Hedland in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Supply of iron ore fines to the plant is by conveyor from the companyÆs existing Nelson Point stockyards. The conveyor passes under Port Hedland harbour in a concrete segmentally lined tunnel, approximately 1030 m long and with a 5.1 m external diameter. The tunnel was constructed by a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) which both excavated the ground and erected the tunnel lining. The tunnel was bored between cut and cover in situ concrete portal structures, the TBM being launched from the Finucane Island side towards Port Hedland town. The alignment required lengthy gradients of 1:6 on either side of the harbourÆs dredged channel, under which the tunnel is bored with a minimum clearance of 8 m.The tunnel is fitted-out with:1800 mm belt conveyor capable of 10 000 tph;walkway along which a specially designed inspection/ maintenance vehicle can run; andtunnel services including power, light, fire detection and suppression communications, water mains for wash down and sumps and pumps for drainage.This paper gives a general overview of the design and construct contract, important aspects of the design and the construction process itself.

Failings di,posal presents many challenges at metal mines in Peru where the extreme relief yields very little useable land area. These challenges are amplified by other hazards such as the high seismic environment, high rainfall, and frequent debris torrents down the steep hillsides. As a result many mining operations have resorted to in-river disposal of mill tailings. This paper presents a case history of one underground metal mine located in the high Andes mountains of Peru where in-river disposal of tailings has been used for some 30 years. The paper outlines a comprehensive engineering study that was aimed at increasing the utilisation of tailings disposal underground. The scope of this study included modifications to the grinding and flotation circuits to produce a high sulphide and low sulphide tailings for underground and surface disposal respectively: mapping and cataloguing of abandoned stopes for hackfilling: modifications to the existing backfill system to improve icliahility and throughput, and a preliminary evaluation of alternatives Such as silicated and paste fills.

In 2009, Peter Munro and Peter Tilyard examined the “human capital” in the mineral processing sector in a paper entitled Back to the Future (Munro and Tilyard, 2009). One of their major concerns was a general decline in technical skills and process knowledge, exacerbated by lack of appreciation of the impact this can have on process plant performance and, ultimately, profitability or sustainability of the industry. There are many reasons for this decline, not least of which are the work schedules of today’s metallurgists which have a very different balance between technical and non-technical responsibility than those in the past. However, a shift towards a more technical focus has potential to deliver a range of benefits for industry at large and for the individuals in it This paper discusses some options for development of core metallurgical and process engineering skills that can be used by graduates, employers and training providers.Key skills are identified and mapped against available opportunities for development, such as existing graduate programs, on-the job training and external courses. The authors also review a number of past and present high-quality graduate development programs, including the graduate development program in place at Mount Isa Mines in the 1980s and the Anglo Platinum Graduate Development Program (AGDP) currently operating in South Africa.

This paper discusses equipment replacement strategies and specifically addresses the upgrading of technologically superseded equipment. The process of equipment replacement evaluations is reviewed, and areas have been highlighted where currently accepted practice results in a bias towards retaining existing equipment longer than otherwise justified. The Discounted Average Cost Method is described and the advantages of the technique for this style of decision making discussed. Several key issues influencing the replacement evaluation are also presented together with examples from recent consulting work.
