In surface mining operations, the ease with which a muckpile may be dug is a dominant factor in mining efficiency. Within broad limits, this is largely dependent on muckpile shape and looseness within a muckpile. Moreover, prediction of grade boundary movement and subsequent dilu- tion is of interest to most open cut mines. Such a predictive tool would enable blast design changes to be made to reduce mixing of certain grade regions. At the very least, a good knowledge of post-blast region bound- aries can reduce layout of the grade boundaries and decrease grade dis- crepancies between pit and plant. The model presented in this paper is able to consider various options for a production blast and predict consequent muckpile shapes and grade boundary movements in a three dimensional manner. The overburden geometry, hole patterns, hole inclination and charge distribution are all explicit model inputs. The model divides the rock mass into blocks and calculates a velocity for each block. Three controlling parameters are used in the model, which are related to the explosive energy per unit length of blast hole, energy attenuation of the rock mass and inter-row delay, respectively. The output of the model is a 3 dimensional muckpile shape (contour or any cross section) and a contour map of grade distribution within the muckpile. The model parameters are site specific, since their values depend on the rock condition and explosive-rock interaction which varies from site to site. In order to "tune" the model to a particular site, parameter values must be found which reproduce an observed muckpile profile shape from a given blast design. This calibration of the model requires at least one surveyed muckpile profile shape from a production blast. The model parameters which best reproduce that shape are found by a pattern search technique, and may then be used to predict the effect of changes in blast design on muckpile profile shape and grade boundary movement.

A requisite corollary of mineral sand mining on North Stradbroake Island (Queensland (Qld), Australia) has been the progressive rehabilitation of post-mined lands for the revegetation of native subtropical Eucalypt communities. Since 2005, rigorous environmental monitoring has been undertaken to verify the annual development of post-rehabilitated sites. From these long-term analyses, a chronosequence of land revegetation (ranging from three to 26 years postrehabilitation) was developed to examine the rehabilitation trajectories of various post-mined sites in relation to proximal undisturbed locations. Here, we identified that some sites may be deviating from the intended natural analogues as evidenced by the opportunistic colonisationand otherwise æinvasiveÆ behaviour of a regionally native species (Black Sheoak - Allocasuarina littoralis), which appear to be displacing the intended Eucalypt varieties. Minerals and Metals Group (MMG) subsidiary Lane Xang Minerals Ltd operates a single site copper and gold mine near Sepon in Lao PDR. Gold production commenced in 2002 and first cathode copper production was in March 2006. Plant throughputs for gold and copper are currently 2.5 Mt/yr and 1.4 Mt/yr respectively; use of a second tailings dam has commenced accordingly. Although the increased catchment area creates opportunities for more storage to reduce demand on other water sources, especially during the dry season, it also creates greater requirements for water treatment capacity.The water balance for mining operations in a tropical monsoon environment with dry winters presents on going management challenges. A successful mining operation depends on a careful balance of water inputs and outputs. The challenge prior to every wet season is having enough storage capacity to absorb potential rainfall. Plant operation in the dry season benefits from water captured and stored from the wet season which reduces the dependence on river water. Release of excess water to the environment is necessary to cope with the overall positive water balance and depends on suitable and effective treatment of water in accordance with the environmental guidelines.Ausenco has recently built and commissioned a second water treatment plant at the Sepon Copper Plant to process tailings decant water.  The objective of the second Sepon water treatment facility is to increase the site water discharge capacity to maintain the water balance and reduce the dependence on river water.  Decant water treatment is required to precipitate the contained heavy metals prior to discharging to surrounding wetlands.  The main metal that needs to be removed from the site water to meet discharge water quality requirements is manganese, as heavy metals are already precipitated to required levels in neutralisation before the tailings are sent to the storage facilities. A site layout provision for removal of manganese to produce a saleable carbonate precipitate is incorporated in the polishing plant design (future installation).

For multi-site mining companies, checking the quality and consistency of the data recorded in risk registers is important for confirming how well mine safety management systems have been implemented. However, this task is complicated by the differences in scope of the site, their particular nature, the complexity of the operations and many other factors that can introduce nuances to the characteristics of the risk registers. We present here an application of a technique called Causal Network Topology Analysis for comparing the quality and consistency of risk registers. By quality we refer to, for example: - missing causal relationships between risks - location of missing controls - focus of risk treatment strategies: prevention versus mitigation controls. By consistency we refer to how causally interdependent are the risk events. There are often causal interactions between the lines of a risk register that mean that the likelihood and consequence scores that are applied to each risk event are not independent. We measure this degree of interactions by: - proportion of independent scenarios per register - efficiency of risk treatment strategy comparison. This approach can indicate quality and consistency differences between registers irrespective of the actual details of the site or operation. This occurs by comparing aspects of the structure of a causal network extracted from how the risk events, causes, controls and consequences causally interact. In this work we compare pairs of registers to demonstrate the approach.

At Reefton, mesothermal gold deposits occur in the Ordovician Greenland Group basement and bituminous coal deposits occur in overlying Eocene Brunner Coal Measures. These different resource types occur in close proximity to one another in the same topography, vegetation and climate. Both types of resources have been mined for many years and as a result historic mining areas discharge water with chemistry reflecting the mineralogy of the deposits. Coal measures release natural acid rock drainage throughout the region due to oxidation of pyrite in coal and associated sediments. Levels of acidity are increased in mining areas, and pH near three is common. Gold mines contain pyrite, arsenopyrite and stibnite. Discharge waters from these sites have pH near seven because of the high acid neutralising capacity of the basement rocks. Both coal and gold mining sites have iron oxyhydroxide precipitates in drainage waters. These precipitates are more abundant at gold mining sites, and one deposit is up to 5 m thick. Iron oxyhydroxide at coal mine sites contain Zn (up to 89 ppm), Ni (up to 10 ppm), As (up to 163 ppm), Cr (up to 23 ppm), Pb (up to 16), and Cu (up to 11 ppm). Jarosite group minerals have been identified in the coalmine iron oxyhydroxide, although most of the material is amorphous. Gold mine iron oxyhydroxide contains Zn (up to 353 ppm), Ni (up to 592 ppm), Cr (up to 17 ppm), Cu (up to 72 ppm), Pb (up to 29 ppm), Sb (up to 230 ppm), and this material is particularly high in As (up to 20 wt per cent). Most of the material is amorphous but distinctive zones (mm scale) are As rich (up to 30 wt per cent As oxide). Pharmacosiderite, K2Fe4(As04)3 (OH)5.6.3H20, is a secondary mineral in one deposit. These iron oxyhydroxide deposits are useful indicators for the metals mobilised into the environment by oxidation in the historic workings.

Mine gas control is a major issue in most of the gassy underground coal mines, due to its direct impact on safety, production delays and cost of production. Analysis of the gas data, from different collieries in Australia showed that longwall gas emissions have increased substantially over the years. Simply increasing the number of goaf holes in the panel or decreasing goaf hole spacing seems not to be effective, in controlling high goaf gas emissions. A major research project has been undertaken by CSIRO in collaboration with mine sites to address this goaf gas control issue with the aim of developing effective and optimum goaf gas drainage strategies. The project has combined extensive field studies with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models, to characterise goaf gas flow patterns and develop effective gas control strategies. The research work specifically involved review of gas control issues at field sites, goaf gas monitoring, tracer gas tests, CFD simulations and extensive field trials. Field demonstration studies of the new optimum strategies have been conducted at two collieries in Australia. The project results have shown that the optimum strategies were highly successful, in improving the overall efficiency of goaf gas drainage systems, at both the field sites. Results of the goaf gas flow characterisation studies and field demonstration studies are summarised in this paper.

The Yallourn North Extension (YNX) open cut mine ceased mining operations in early 1989. YNX may be used again for coal supply at the discretion of the Coal Corporation Of Victoria (CCV); this has resulted in the need for interim rehabilitation of the site which may last many years, or indeed, permanently.The site has suffered substantial surface erosion over the years with large areas of bare clay and coal batters remaining exposed. The first priority is to reduce the quantity and improve the quality of stormwater runoff from the site. This is best achieved by appropriate revegetation and the use of existing landform depressions as silt trap/wetland areas. Proposed rehabilitation needed to take into account the sensitive fire safety of the open cut and the option to re-open the mine if CCV deems appropriate.The authors detail the factors involved in the rehabilitation proposal and the multi-disciplinary approach to planning including engineers, scientists, a forester, landscape architects and community input. The rehabilitation design included early consideration of land use and ongoing maintenance issues linked to water quality improvement factors including vegetation. Engineering input was required for reshaping and clay covering exposed coal batters and the design of silt traps which will revert to wetlands in future. The integration of each discipline has produced a rehabilitation design pleasing to both the SECV and community alike.

The objective of the paper is to develop an understanding of the influence of caving on powered support rating by examining the geology and support performance at two sites which represent the current extremes in support rating, ie 6/240 Ton supports operating in the Hirst Seam at Solsgirth Colliery, Scotland, and 4/900 Tonne supports operating in the Bulli Seam, West Cliff Colliery, Australia. A conceptual model is introduced which considers the coal ahead of the face, the powered support, and the caved waste to be three yielding foundations which interact to control the subsidence of the roof strata. Different caving mechanisms are identified for the strata of the Hirst and Bulli Seams, ihese mechanisms being related to rock properties, ie to the palaeogeography and depositional conditions at each site, producing caved wastes with different yield characteristics. The results obtained for convergence and support reaction during production cycles at both sites are analysed to show the manner in which support reaction is developed, indicating the importance of high setting load densities in the Bulli Seam. Evaluation of the work done on the subsiding roof strata during typical production cycles by two of the yielding foundations, ie the powered support and the caved waste immediately behind the powered support, is used to further demonstrate the influence of caving mechanisms on support rating.

The Worthing Mine near Hallett Cove. 20 km southwest of the cite of Adelaide, belongs to Aus- tralia's first mining era, which took place in South Australia between 1841 and 1851 (Figure 1). Oper- ations began in 1849 only six years after the com- mencement of metal mining in Australia at Glen Osmond. Although not as historically significant as Glen Osmond (1841), or the much larger copper mines of Kapunda (1844) or Burra (1845) its importance lies with its Cornish enginehouse and chimney. The Worthing enginehouse, built in 1851-1852 is the oldest remaining in Australia and certainly the most significant relic of Australia's first mining era. Six other stone enginehouses were built during that period: at Kapunda in 1848 and 1850: at Burra in 1849, 1850 and 1851; and at Tungkillo in 1849. All of these houses have long since dis- appeared although the foundations of one (Kapunda, 1850) still remain. The significance of the Worthing site is enhanced by its magnificant environmental setting in the bare, steep valley of Field River. Currently (1986) the Worthing Mine is the only site within the City of Marion which is on the Register of State Heritage Items. The site is also included in the Classified List of the National Trust of South Australia and on the Register of the National Estate.

An investigation into the reliability of the data being collected at the Mount Isa Mines site operated by Glencore in Queensland allowed on-site ventilation personnel to scrutinise pressure and volume measurements collected from the primary surface fans. The investigation effectively identified discrepancies being reported to the on-site remote monitoring system. The difference between the real-time and static measurements on the P63 RAR shaft identified that the in situ differential pressure transducer and piezo annubar system was not operating correctly. This indicated a deficiency of approximately 30 per cent reporting back to the remote monitoring software versus the live readings measured with the Pitot tube bomb and ALNOR AXD610 pressure micro-manometer.Constant monitoring of an operations ventilation network is imperative to ensuring that the underground atmosphere provides a safe and healthy workplace. Further benefits to real-time monitoring allows for the early indication of network failures and promotes increased availability. An innovative approach to out engineer and improve the existing measuring equipment from the 1970s was sought.The use of ultrasonics in the mining industry is not new with ventilation management systems (VMS) equipment available within the marketplace. The introduction and implementation of a reliable product for real-time monitoring was a challenge to overcome due to limited access and suitable measuring points within the mine. The available equipment on the market through mainstream suppliers was not suitable for the unique application required due to the in situ installation of the surface fans. A solution was identified in the oil and gas industry through collaboration and innovative thinking. The Golden Cross Mine is located on the North Island of New Zealand, at the base of the Coromandel Peninsula, approximately 8 km northwest of Waihi. The project is operated as a Joint Venture with Coeur Gold New Zealand holding 800/0 and Viking Mining Limited with a 20% interest. The past open-pit and underground gold and silver producer has been in the reclamation phase of the operation for approximately 2.5 years and is now nearing completion. Although rehabilitation of the site is a regulatory requirement, the Closure Plan has been enhanced by the ongoing commitment of the Joint Venture to establish a sustainable land use for the site by commissioning engineered facilities designed to last for perpetuity. The Joint Venture identified six significant design features that were key to successful rehabilitation. These were the controlled placement of acid generating waste rock into engineered disposal sites; the design and placement of sealing layers over the waste rock disposal sites; the design and construction of diversion drains; the establishment and management of vegetation to protect the oxygen diffusion layer; a partial capping of the tailings to accelerate consolidation adjacent to the tailings dam embankment, and the implementation of a cyanide recovery circuit to recycle cyanide from the tailings prior to disposal. Another key to success for the project involved genuine consultation with all parties participating in the planning, evaluation, and consenting of the closure process at Golden Cross. The local and regulatory community has been widely represented in the Joint Venture's operating and closure plans throughout the history of the mine. Participants include: Regional and District Councillors and staff members, professional peer reviewers, environmental groups, local residents of the valley, and Iwi. This overall commitment to the project has resulted in a world-class rehabilitation program for the first modern metal-mine closure in New Zealand and we believe that collectively, the work done at Golden Cross is helping to set a standard for the success of future programs within the extractive industry.

In mine site revegetation, exotic grasses are more commonly used than native grasses. This is due to unavailability of native grass seed on a commerical scale and lack of information on agronomical aspects of native grasses. This paper lists a number of native grass species that have the potential to grow well on mine sites, and provides some information on their seed collection, processing and germination. Further, it demonstrates via results of a field trial conducted at Ranger Mine spoil the relative performance of ten native grasses and Rhodes grass. It is concluded that (i) some native grasses have similar ability to grow on mine spoils compared to Rhodes grass and (ii) the use of native grasses have added advantages in ecosystem restoration.

This paper looks at the problems associated with surface settlements and other subsidence effects from the underground extraction of coal in relation to consent applications under the Resource Management Act. The main features of subsidence are examined with respect to identifying the adverse effects as defined under the RMA. Particular attention is paid to sites where little or no data is available as in the case of greenfield sites or at mines where new or different mining methods are being introduced. In these situations it is not possible to make accurate predictions of settlements or strains and therefore other factors need to be considered. The long term effects which might occur post mining are examined in relation to mitigation and management options.

Computerisation of mine planning activities, specifically in the areas of geology, design and surveying, has been in progress for a number of years in underground metalliferous mines. The combined capabilities of hardware and software have only recently reached the levels necessary to fully support integrated mine planning computer systems in a graphical three dimensional environment. Despite the apparent capabilities of systems now on the market, many sites retain significant parts of their older paper based systems, and employ a mix of two or more software packages. This paper examines what underground metalliferous sites are doing in this area in Australia, and discusses the factors which are inhibiting full implementation of fully integrated computerised systems. Future directions for further developments in the field are also briefly discussed.

The application of the hydraulic fracturing technique to the measurement of in situ rock stress from underground excavation is discussed; including relevant theoretical considerations, equipmenl details, experimental technique and analysis procedures. Examples of the application of the technique at three Australian coal and metalliferous mining operations are given. The results obtained from these applications are compared with corresponding results obtained from overcoring tests conducted in close proximity at each site. Generally good correspondence in a wide variety of rock types is indicated. Experience gained with hydraulic fracturing at several underground mining sites has indicated it to be a quick, cost effective means of gaining an understanding of the in situ stress field in sufficient detail for many mine planning functions.

Thermodynamic properties of the solutions of hydrogen in metals and carbon in austenite were investigated and it is possible to predict the interstitial solubility in these systems over relatively wide ranges of temperature and solute activity. Monte Carlo methods were used to compute the arrangements of interstitial atoms on the tetrahedral sites in body centred cubic metals and the octahedral sites in face centred cubic metals. It was shown that the non-configurational entropies of solution of hydrogen in metals can be interpreted as being principally vibrational and on this basis the potential value of the isotopic solubility ratio theory in indicating the compositional variation of these non-configurational entropies was discussed. The need for future work along these lines is pointed out.

Development of aggregate resources for use in structural concrete has been encouraged in Japan to support infrastructure improvement and national land conservation. Natural aggregate is a valuable resource necessary for sound economic development, and its importance is growing. After completion of aggregate mining projects, planting and afforestation are implemented. But sandy soil in excavation sites is not optimum for the growth of vegetation, and many years are needed before forests are restored. Planting techniques should be improved to support efficient reforestation in a shorter period of time. For this purpose, problems hampering growth of vegetation must to be solved through application of physical and physicochemical techniques to ensure that the environment and the ecosystem will be conserved in project sites.

Powders prepared from the algae Gracilaria secundata, Ulva lactuca and Ecklonia radiatawere shown to provide sole nutritional support for microbial, microaerobic, biodegradation of low-grade manganese dioxide ore. G. secundata was the most effective bacterial nutrient giving 32 per cent recovery of Mn++, at an average rate of 63 mg Mn++/litre/day and a yield of 24 mg Mn++/g dry powder in microaerobic cultures containing 1.5 per cent (w/v)MnOz ore and 3per cent (w/v) powder over 14 days. Although G. secundata was approximately half as effective as molasses in supporting microbial decomposition ofMnOz, possible on-site growth ofthe alga could be economicaIIy more practical than transporting carbohydrate to a distant mine site.

Many young mining engineers do not consider consulting as a possible job, believing that many years of working on-site is required to achieve practical experience, develop expertise and acquire industry contacts. However, mining consultancies employ engineers with varying levels of experience, including part-time university students, graduates and engineers who are relatively new to the industry. This paper outlines the role of a young engineer in a large mining consultancy and the benefits to both the consultancy and the client of having a mix of consultants with a diverse range of experience. From the authorÆs perspective, the work experience, lifestyle and rewards of mine consulting are compared to site based work, including a discussion on whether consulting is able to offer the professional development that a young engineer needs.
