In 1985, ZC Mines (now Pasminco South) had been unprofitable for some years due to a combination of high operating costs, low metal prices, low head grade and an aging and inadequate mining infrastructure. However, the resource of metal in the ground was still of world class, even after some 80 years of mining. A major study, which was to be of two years duration, was therefore commenced to establish a practical and profitable long term mining strategy and to cost the infrastructure options needed for its support and thus form the justification for a capital expenditure program to take the mine profitably into the 21st century and its second century of operation. This paper discusses the rationale behind the methodology adopted and the nature of the results achieved in one aspect of the study - the determination of the mineable resource and the relationship between the head grade/quantity of the economically mineable resource and the variables of cut-off grade, cost structure, annual production rate and metal prices/exchange rates. The basis of the study was the designing of some 5000 scopes to mine out the entire resource for a range of cut- off grades and the assembly of the detailed physical data thus obtained in a stope-by-stope data base for financial and other analysis. Those scopes which were shown to be economically mineable were then scheduled for two optimum annual production/cut-off grade/metal price combinations to provide life-of-mine cost and value of production cash flows.

In common with several great orebodies and mineral camps around the world Broken Hill has been the subject of state-of-the-art technical and scientific scrutiny during its long working life. During the early years geological interest in Broken Hill tended to be directed at the body for its intrinsic scientific worth, mainly on account of its large size, high grade and wealth of mineral species. For much of the last 60 years the interest has had a more applied motivation, namely, to assist the search for either repetitions in the Broken Hill field or analogues in other terrains. This paper looks at the major changes in geological concepts and exploration techniques applied at Broken Hill and attempts to assess their impact.

The mining industry is becoming increasingly focused on pre-concentration due to its potential economic and environmental benefits, particularly for the more complex, low-grade, high throughput operations now being developed. Advances in technology have seen bulk ore sorting (BOS) trialled at several operations. However, BOS should not be seen as a ‘silver bullet’, it can offer significant benefits, but only under the right conditions. Deposits with interspersed mineralogy or disseminated, fine-grained minerals can be difficult for BOS. Large batches of barren or low-grade material are required for BOS to be effective. Hatch has recently completed several studies for clients who believed that bulk sorting was the most suitable pre-concentration technique for their operation, based only on an assumed sorter recovery or on laboratory trials of the chosen sensor. However, minimal consideration had been given to the heterogeneity of the deposit, the achievable separation batch size or sensor repeatability. Evaluation of BOS needs to consider both heterogeneity and sensor suitability. The valuable or gangue mineral must be present in such a way that it can be separated effectively in the large bulk sorting batch sizes, without competing minerals or changing ore characteristics affecting the metal upgrade or recovery. Also, the sensor chosen must be able to detect either the valuable mineral, a proxy for the valuable mineral, or a gangue mineral for rejection with sufficient accuracy and precision (repeatability). This paper presents three recent case studies, emphasizing markers which indicated that bulk sorting was unsuitable for the project whilst highlighting the pre-concentration technologies which were applicable (including particle sorting, and coarse particle gravity separation). The modelling methodology, equipment sizing and forward work plans developed to verify these alternative solutions are also presented, demonstrating the key factors contributing to a thorough scoping assessment.

PT. Indo Muro Kencana (PT.IMK) is gold and silver mine located in Central Kalimantan province, Indonesia. Mining activities in PT.IMK is conducted in Bantian pit area by applying surface mining method and using combination of excavator and hauler (articulated dump truck and rigid haul truck) as the transportation for ore to the crushing plant and waste material to the waste dump. Current blasting practice is ore-waste blasting. Ore-waste blasting is the term where the ore and waste rock are blasted in the same blasting process. Blasting is conducted by using nonel initiation system. By multiple pits operation, monthly powder factor is varied from 0.23 kg/t to 0.27 kg/t. Emulsion blend with density 1.15 g/cc is used as bulk explosive. At this stage, the concept of geoblast is proposed as an engineering tool for Drill and Blast engineering practice in PT.IMK. In addition, there is a need to maintain rock fragmentation by blasting, to maintain monthly powder factor, and to maintain excavator’s productivity. Next, the concept of scaled depth of burial (Chiappetta and Treleven, 1997) and the concept of blastability index (Lilly, 1986) are proposed as geoblast’s tools to improve blasting practice in PT.IMK. It is expected that rock fragmentation by blasting, explosive consumption and excavator’s productivity will be maintained by integration of geoblast and drill and blast engineering. Furthermore, the objective of this paper is to integrate geoblast and drill and blast engineering in order to create an engineering guideline in PT.IMK. Additionally, blasting trials with air decking application is proposed in order to support the geoblast’s improvement. It is planned that these blasting trials will be conducted in 2022. In conclusion, it can be seen that integration of geoblast and D&B engineering in PT.IMK is relevant to improve current drill and blast current practice and applicable to maintain rock fragmentation by blasting.

The relationship between efficient liner exchange, concentrator availability and concentrator profitability is well documented. Russell Mineral Equipment’s (RME) relationship with OZ Minerals’ Prominent Hill site personnel enabled sound collaboration between the two parties. Both parties worked together to identify the sources of productivity and efficiency loss and developed solutions to reverse them.This paper chronicles the identification of production inefficiencies and the resulting removal of mill relining from the critical path through the materialisation of mill relining optimisation strategies. The Kalgoorlie Golden Mile is proposed as an Archaean volcanogenic-type deposit, modified and redistributed along later-developed structures. Rich pyritctelluride and Green Leader gold mineralization is associated with the end phase of basic volcanism and, in a general sense, is confined to a broad interface zone between the products of marine basic volcanism and later acid volcanism. There is virtualIy no ore associated with the main body of acid volcanics.Green Leader is the local name of a type of ore that occurs at some igneous rock contacts in association with graphitic sediments and layered acidic tuffs. It is characteristicalIy green, of various shades, and commonly yields very high gold assays, the reasons for which are not apparent in hand specimen.Carbonates, carbonaceous shales, tuffites, rich gold ores, and acid and intermediate dykes, alI indicating a common heritage, are features common to the main ore hosts, viz. the Paringa Basalt (Calc Schist) and theGolden Mile Dolerite ("Quartz Dolerite Greenstone").Several probably related fracture systems have reconstituted most, but not all, of the original deposits into a large number of steep tabular lodes.Includes two sets of discussions and comments from later Proceedings volumes.

Sampling protocols that are designed to suit the mineralisation style will result in a reduction of the nugget effect and hence resource risk. The a priori need for all sampling programs is the effective characterisation of the mineralisation type(s) to support optimisation. This requires a program of sampling for sampling followed by holistic characterisation. At each end of the coarse-gold to fine-gold spectrum, the samplability of a deposit ranges from relatively simple for fine-grained disseminated gold particles, through to extremely difficult for coarse nuggety mineralisation. Many deposits contain a proportion of both particle size types. The proportion and size of coarse gold particles has a direct impact on the effectiveness of sampling, where coarser particles will require larger samples and more specialised protocols. The nature of mineralisation geology/mineralogy and associated gold particle sizing can only be determined by sampling to facilitate optimised protocols. Mineralogical studies, focusing on particle size, particle clustering and distribution in host minerals, are required as part of wider paragenetic and metallurgical investigations. This paper discusses the role of mineralogical studies in the characterisation of gold ores for sampling optimisation through a series of case studies.

The plant and processing site at Porgera has been built on a levelled mudstone ridge about lkm E of the mine. Excavation of 7xl06m3 of soil and rock was necessary to achieve the required area. The exposed mudstone belongs to the Chico Formation and is weak, sheared and readily breaks down by slaking upon exposure. Tectonic uplift and subsequent erosion have produced the present landscape of narrow bedrock ridges, with deep colluvium in the incised valleys. The deep excavation to a maximum of 60m, has rapidly unloaded the mudstone, and subsequent stress relief has caused rebound and dilation of the material. The processes of pore pressure equilibration, softening, progressive failure and loosening, combine to deteriorate the newly exposed rock mass. An important requirement in every geological quality control program is that the identity and grades of the control samples (duplicates, certified reference materials (CRMs), and blanks) must remain æblindÆ to the analytical laboratory. Once the entity to be controlled is aware of relevant details of the control process, such as the identity of the control samples, the objectivity may be lost and the control may no longer be completely valid. Whereas the blind insertion of field duplicates and coarse blanks can be easily conducted at site, simultaneously with the sampling process, the rest of the control samples should be inserted into the batches during or after sample preparation and prior to assaying, in order to ensure a proper assessment of precision, accuracy and assay contamination, independent of the internal quality control of the laboratory. Such a procedure raises the concern that blind insertion of crushed or pulverised material in sample batches prior to assaying could represent a breach in the chain of custody principle, as samples would have to be temporarily returned to the custody of a non-laboratory person in charge of the insertions. In this seemingly conflict scenario, what should we give up? Do we maintain the strict chain of custody, knowing that the laboratory will be aware of the identity of some of the control samples, or that some duplicates will not be true same-batch duplicates? Do we ignore chain of custody issues to maintain the anonymity of the control samples and insert blind same-batch duplicates, CRMs and blanks? Is it possible to do blind insertions without breaching the chain of custody? Current NI 43-101 and JORC requirements, as well as real-world QA/QC and sample security practices, are discussed in light of AMECÆs approach to the solution of this apparent dilemma.

The evaluation of risk is becoming more important in the siting of mining operations in the United States as well as the rest of the world. The determination of environmental, economic, as well as health and safety risks is an important step in the planning of any mining operation. Hydrogeology plays an important role in pre-mine planning and in the determination of these risks. The mine operators must determine if ground water would inhibit mining in any way. Factors which are important to consider include mine dewatering economics, slope stability, and other adverse hydrologic impacts. This paper presents methodologies for the characterization of hydrogeological risks for a mining operation. First of all, the term risk analysis is defined and its utility is addressed. Then, stepwise methods for performing a typical risk analysis are presented. Finally, the application of risk analysis to hydrogeology in mining is given. With slight modification, it is believed that these methodologies can be used to evaluate the hydrogeological risks for any mining operation.

A mineral systems approach was used to interpret precompetitive airborne mineral mapping geoscience data for iron oxide copper gold (IOCG) exploration in the Starra area, Eastern Succession, Mount Isa Inlier. Selected minerals were chosen to map possible source rocks/fluids as well as intersecting structural/fluid pathways that could have transported mineralising fluids into domains of contrasting rocks/fluids where there was potential for physicochemical gradients to precipitate metals. Ferric and ferrous iron contents and white mica abundance were useful mineral criteria to identify theMount Dore Granite of theWilliams-Naraku Batholith as a potential source of æoxidisedÆ fluids rich in Fe, K and potentially Cu-Au. The Mount Dore Shear Zone (MDSZ) intersects the western margin of this granite with the highest contents and changes in composition of the white mica are peripheral to this contact within the granite. This together, with the fact that the entire N-S length of the MDSZ in the study area (~16 km) is abundant in white mica are evidence of K-rich fluids had preferentially moved along this pathway. To the south, the MDSZ intersects a domain comprising massive ironstone bodies as well as numerous graphitic horizons. This interpreted æreducedÆ domain is well mapped using the æopaqueÆ mineral products, as well as by white mica, which is pervasively developed and extends 2 km either side of the MDSZ fault into the meta-sedimentary sequences. The chemistry of this white mica also changes progressively away from the MDSZ, becoming more Si-rich (longer wavelength) towards the contact with massive ironstone bodies in the west and the graphitic units in the east, both of which represent sites of known Cu-Au mineralisation. Beyond these contact zones of interpreted æoxidised fluidsÆ with reduced rocks/fluids, there is either a rapid change to Si-poor white mica and/or no white mica developed, ie major æchemicalÆ gradient change. These mineral mapping results provide evidence for a direct link between possible source rocks and sites of IOCG metal deposition as well as extending the associated alteration zonation which had previously been mapped/published at the metre-scale to the kilometre-scale. The Malvern Hills coal project is now in an advanced stage of development with the stripping of overburden from above former underground workings in which a 3 m seam of subbituminous C coal with very low ash and sulphur was previously mined. The main seam dips at 45¦ to the south-east, along with other adjacent potentially recoverable thinner seams, and the strike extent of past coal mining in the Malvern Hills approaches 10 km with most extraction by underground methods. Overburden and interburden is predominantly weak mudstone, with only very minor sandstone, whilst a 1 - 2 m thick veneer of Last Glaciation loess covers the area. The coal product from the present mine site will supply the local industrial market, with production planned to peak at about 20 000 tpa. Settling pond design has been based on several different approaches, including an estimate of likely inflows from the contributing catchment of about 5 ha under predicted storms having a ten year recurrence interval. A pond of about 1000 m2 in area has been constructed with its invert in mudstone bedrock, and soil slopes have been lined with lime-stabilised clayey loess silt incorporating a gravel armour layer. The pond outflow takes place via a 2 m high 1.8 m diameter concrete dewatering tower, with a skimmer arrangement to lower the pond by approximately 500 mm between storm events. The overflow water discharges to the main stream above a natural wetland, which will act as a secondary polishing pond, and this is to be enhanced in conjunction with the neighbouring forestry company. Discharge consents specify turbidity and pH as the controlling criteria, and both will be monitored at the settling pond discharge point as well as at the entry to the main stream. Investigations to date indicate that the pH of water exiting from previous underground workings is in the range 6.8 to 7.2, and that acidic drainage will not be an issue with this mine site. No dispersive clays have been identified in assessing the overburden and batter materials, although erosion during storm events is expected and all drains will ultimately be routed through the main settling pond to ensure adequate control of runoff-generated sediment. Reestablishment of vegetation on cut and fill batters remains a priority, and ongoing monitoring will ensure satisfactory long-term performance of the pond system.

The objectives of grade control remain unchanged but new methods are being developed to attain them. Since the early-1990s, an improvement in the power of mine site computers has made the geostatistical tools of conditional simulation more accessible. Optimisation of the grade control process on mine sites now involves two stages: optimisation of the sampling regime and optimisation of the interpretation of ore and waste boundaries. Optimisation of the sampling regime first requires an understanding of the nature of the mineralisation and in particular the impact of particle size on the sampling precision. This relationship, termed the Fundamental Error of sampling, enables an optimum subsampling protocol to be defined for the sample preparation and assaying. However, the actual sample collection method, whether drilling or trenching, must be correctly selected and the sampling grid should be optimised. The relative costs and benefits of various alternative sampling methods and grids can be determined using the method discussed. The use of the grade control data can also be optimised. In the past ore and waste boundaries were often defined using a linear interpolation algorithm that smoothed the data (such as polygonal, sectional, inverse distance squared or even kriging methods). Frequently the relative impact of ore loss and dilution could not be estimated. Conditional simulation to generate equiprobable alternative maps (realisations) can now be adopted to address these issues. A transfer function is then used to evaluate the similarities and differences between the maps. The Ore Block Optimisation (OBO¬) process is a transfer function that produces a three-dimensional model of the optimal ore block outlines. This provides a clear guide for the mining geologist to refine and mine. The nature of the transfer function and the inputs and outputs are discussed. In the past, reconciliation has been the `acid test' for any grade control system. Any ore blocking method based on conditional simulation can make use of the exhaustive data set to ensure that reconciliation between prediction and production will improve significantly. The OBO¬ method provides a guide to the mining geologist to ensure that the best ore blocks are mined. Misclassification between ore and waste is reduced, ore loss and dilution are minimised (and are measurable) and ore is optimally assigned to stockpiles of various cut-off grades. These advantages significantly enhance mine profitability and control of the mined grade.

Designing and constructing OxianaÆs Sepon gold and copper operations in one of the most remote areas in Laos has been a great achievement; one which was recognised by the engineering industryÆs highest accolade û the Australian Engineering Excellence Award in 2005. The developing nation of Laos has no previous mining or heavy industrial experience, but the support of the Lao Government and a remarkable Lao workforce has enabled the project to be developed and operate as well as it would anywhere else in the world.When making a decision to invest offshore, several geophysical and jurisdictional criteria need to be considered. Laos offers unparalleled prospectivity, a central location with growing infrastructure, a ready workforce and a developing but supportive regulatory regime. In addition, the Sepon copper project has exceptional characteristics, including its high grades, location near the surface, leachable qualities, access to hydropower and the ability to produce cathodes on site. These attributes and its location in the centre of a region hungry for resources contributes to the projectÆs excellent economics.

How do you initiate closure planning for a mine site that is on the doorstep of a major community without generating the extremes of panic or complacency? That is the question that is faced by Australia's largest gold mine, the Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) Super Pit in Kalgoorlie-Boulder. KCGM's Community Relations Manager, Danielle van Kampen, will reveal the lengthy closure planning process that is in train to alert yet not alarm the community about the future of the Super Pit and to generate discussion on issues of importance. What will happen to the 'big hole' that generates both mining and tourism dollars for the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder as its anticipated closure date of 2021 comes closer? How do you communicate a constantly evolving closure date? Although the process may generate more questions than answers, the project will be discussed at length and with the added benefit of independent community recent research in the form of the public 2009 Closure Consultation and the KCGM 2010 Social Impact Assessment. The purpose of this paper is to provide the rationale for decision making when considering the use of three heading gate roads in Australian underground coal mines.There are currently 30 underground longwall mines in Australia with all but two employing two heading gate road longwall layouts. The volumetric capacity of these two heading ventilation circuits is evidently viable in typical block lengths and in low to moderate gas regimes. However, in gassier regimes, potential longwall production rates of 10 Mt/a, and or where block lengths are being extended to well beyond historical norms, a conventional two heading U circuit may not be adequate. Other than seam gas emission, block length and production dependent heat loads together sealed area management requirements also have to be considered.The two mines currently employing three heading gate roads have the opportunity to revert to two headings at any time but, based on operational experience to date, have not done so due to the consequential reduction in gas management capacity and lower production rates associated with gas delays and limitations on tailgate access.Although there are a number of alternative two heading longwall circuits available and employed worldwide, the custom and practice of promoting inert goaf atmospheres in most Australian coal mines to mitigate the risk of catastrophic gas explosions and spontaneous combustion often prevents the use of gas loaded bleeder systems. In this respect, Australian underground coal mines may be considered the safest in the world.The current situation is that three heading gate roads have been proven successful in Australian conditions, albeit at additional cost, where two heading ventilation circuits cannot manage net seam gas emission to the ventilation system at the production rates required. People in economically developed societies demonstrate inherent human care for Earth and want to stop pollution. Yet efforts to clean Earth seem bogged in confusion from wildly contradictory and alarmist predictions of æclimate crisisÆ. Supposed experts openly disagree yet weÆre told thereÆs universal agreement humans are causing æthe end of life as we know itÆ. The turmoil combines with peopleÆs feelings of fear, guilt, anger, hopelessness and even resignation and apathy to trigger æclimate alarmÆ. The paper enables people to rediscover clarity, hope and support for Earth by understanding how climate alarm and confusion were created and how they actually increase pollution. Many people seem to think global warming is as serious as pollution and worry that questioning alarm will enable pollution. Yet theyÆre different. We need be even more concerned about climate alarm because history shows repeatedly that when buried by ignorance and panic real problems grow overwhelming. Environmental credibility is endangered by confused politicians and sensationalist media. When weÆre willing to re-evaluate what weÆve been told we replace fear and confusion with facts and freedom to identify opportunities. Combining this with practical understanding of human behaviour and leadership enables opportunities to be identified and action taken. The paper shows how confident, informed leadership leads and supports higher productivity and effective care for the natural environment.

The installation of on-line analysis systems in the open-pit mines of the Public Power Corporation SA (PPC, the state-owned electricity entity of Greece) is considered to be the key-parameter for performing improved quality control and blending/homogenisation of the produced lignite. In order to investigate the accuracy of these systems under the site-specific conditions of the Greek lignite deposits, a research project was carried out. This was necessary since there is lack of experience in using on-line analysers in mines that produce a fuel of such a poor and largely fluctuating quality. After thorough market research, a dual energy gamma ray transmission on-line ash analyser was installed in Kardia mine of Ptolemais û Amynteon Lignite Centre, which is located in West Macedonia, Greece. The initial results obtained after the realisation of a series of dual-comparison trials (ie using two series of reference values that allow three-way comparisons) pointed out several problems that obstacle the achievement of high accuracy on-line measurements. More specifically, the measurements obtained by the analyser were higher than the concentrations determined by the two laboratories when the ash content was lower than 12 per cent (in wet basis). On the contrary, when the ash content was higher than 12 per cent, the measurements of the on-line analyser were lower than the concentrations determined by the laboratories. In other words, the range of the measurements obtained by the analyser was narrower than that corresponding to the lab analyses results. Therefore, the use of this on-line analysis system under the site-specific operating conditions of Kardia mine does not guarantee improved quality control of the lignite fed to the mine-mouth located power plant. Most probable reasons that explain the above-mentioned problems are the following: The frequent and widely ranging fluctuations of the chemical and mineralogical composition of the lignite transported by the conveyor belt, especially as far as its calcium content is concerned. This result from the nature and the origin of the mineral matter co-excavated with the lignite, which varies from calcareous marls to sands and clays rich in aluminium and silica minerals. The fluctuations of the lignite quantity transported by the conveyor belt. The change of the linear concentration of iron contained in the fabric of different belt parts.

The knowledge of the expected run of mine (ROM) fragmentation during the feasibility study of a green field site is essential for the design of downstream crushing and milling processes. However,the prediction of blast fragmentation can be a challenging process due to the uncertainty related to the blast design and rock mass parameters. In general,a number of possible blast designs are considered in a feasibility study,with factors such as bench height and blasthole diameter influencing the design. Rock mass parameters are normally derived from a limited number of geotechnical diamond drill cores. Although diamond drill core can provide detailed information concerning intact rock strength (unconfined compressive strength and point load),it provides limited structural information to predict the in situ block size distribution of the rock mass. The in situ block size is an essential input to the prediction of the fragmentation distribution, in particular the coarse end. This paper outlines the methodology of blast fragmentation modeling undertaken for a green field feasibility study at the Riska gold deposit in Indonesia. The favoured milling process for the feasibility study was dump leaching,with no crushing of the ore material extracted from the pit. For this reason,blast fragmentation was a critical issue to be addressed by the study. A range of blast designs were considered with bench heights and blasthole diameters ranging from 4 m to 7 m and 76 mm to 102 mm respectively. Rock mass data was obtained from 19 diamond drill cores across the deposit (total drill length approximately 2200 m). Intact rock strength was estimated from qualitative strength descriptors,while the in situ block size distribution of the rock mass was estimated from the Rock Quality Designation (RQD) of the core. The methodology of fragmentation prediction involved a number of steps including the estimation of rock mass parameters from diamond drillhole data including the estimation of the in situ block size, delineation of blast domains within the deposit,and the assessment of the impact of various blast design parameters and rock mass variation on the predicted fragmentation distribution. The modelling process for the Riska green field site highlighted the need for additional rock mass data to be collected post feasibility stage and once the development of the mine commenced.

The aquifer at Phosphate Hill, north-west Queensland, presents special management challenges. The site contains a phosphate rock mine, fertilizer plant and camp. All of the site water is provided by the Duchess Embayment Aquifer, located within the Burke River Outlier of the Georgina Basin. The Duchess Embayment is a triangular shaped, Cambrian marine sedimentary basin consisting of siliceous and calcareous phosphorites, shales, siltstones and sandstones. It is fault-bounded on all sides and has a regional dip of 5¦E. The aquifer is largely confined to the siliceous facies of the Beetle Creek Formation. It has a very flat potentiometric surface and an average thickness of 45 m with confining beds above and below. The siliceous facies derives from weathering of the calcareous phase and is highly transmissive while the calcareous zone itself contains less water and is dependent upon interconnecting fractures for its permeability. Recharge appears to occur where the siliceous facies crops out around the edges of, and within, the Embayment. Aquifer management issues revolve around two points: successful dewatering of the orebody for mining; and efficient management to maintain water quality and ensure supply over the predicted 30-year life of the project. Current operations are extracting water at levels much below that originally estimated. This is having a detrimental effect on mine dewatering with the SWL lowering at a rate slower than anticipated. As a result, ore parcels are now beginning to intersect the water table, providing a major constraint to the mining plan. The aquifer drawdown cone is extensive and very flat so to keep the water table at an appropriate level for mining the management plan will include more aggressive dewatering to lower the level of the entire aquifer. The additional water will either be disposed of downstream or stored in a holding dam or via the use of artificial storage and recharge. Water resource management will also need to maintain the current quality. About 37 per cent of the water currently extracted forms the low chloride supply required by the ammonia plant and the power station. This ratio is expected to remain applicable under any future operating conditions but the low chloride resource is restricted so will require prudent management to enable the supply to continue. At current usage rates aquifer recharge versus use will need careful monitoring to ensure that the resource remains viable in the long-term.
