The proposed Second Avenue Subway is a new two-track subway line running from 125th Street and Park Avenue at the north, east along 125th Street to Second Avenue and south along Second Avenue to the Financial District in lower Manhattan, NY with 16 new stations and 13.6 km (8.5 miles) of track. The project has been broken into four construction phases. The initial Phase 1 operating segment includes three new stations (96th, 86th and 72nd Street stations) with a connection to the existing Broadway line at the 63rd Street Station at Lexington Avenue. Rehabilitation of the 63rd Street Station is also included in the scope of Phase 1. Subsequent phases extend service north and west to 125th Street (Phase 2), south to Houston Street (Phase 3) and finally to Hanover Square (Phase 4). The DMJM Harris/Arup Joint Venture (DHAJV) prepared the Contract Documents MTA for Phase 1. Parsons Brinckerhoff is providing the MTA with construction inspection services for Contract C-26002. In April 2007, NYCT awarded first Phase 1 for $337 million to S3 Tunnel Constructors, a tri-venture comprised of Skanska USA Civil, Schiavone and Shea. Contract C26002 is for the construction of the tunnel boring ma-chine (TBM) launch box and the mining of the TBM tunnels from 92nd Street to 63rd Street. The major part of the contract is to construct a shaft, commonly referred to as the launch box, from East 92nd Street to East 95th Street having dimensions of 244-m- (800-ft-) long by 18.9-m- (62-ft-) wide and a depth of 19.8 m (65 ft), including more than 91,000 m3 (119,000 cu yd) of soil and rock contained within its walls. The launch box will ultimately become the southern half of the 96th Street Station. The focus here is geological conditions at the launch box and existing structures along the launch box. These geologic conditions and existing structures had a major influence on the selection and design of the support of excavation system (SOE), the SOE bracing system, construction staging, the ground movements, dewatering and other challenges of constructing the launch box (Fig. 1).

In this report, the effects of anode-production variables, such as aggregate coke sizes, pitch binder content, and baking cycle, were investigated. A small alumina reduction cell proved effective in evaluating anodes prepared from commercial materials and from lignite coke and pitch. Compressive strength was found to be the physical property most significantly influenced, but it did not appear to affect anode consumption. Specific carbon consumption, that is, the ratio of carbon in the anodic gas to carbon theoretically oxidized at the anode, was used as an index of anode consumption. It was found that an anode made with lignite coke and commercial pitch was very low in consumption; however, anodes made completely from lignite but by a different fabrication method showed high consumption and anode deterioration. Microscopic examination of anodes after electrolysis showed evidence of higher consumption at low current densities, and was useful in judging overall anode quality. Based on the physical properties of the anodes and their consumption during electrolysis, lignite can be a suitable material for anodes, provided the proper fabrication conditions are used.

In the Pilbara region of Western Australia, an iron ore mine is undertaking a high wall cut-back to improve stability and allow access to deeper ore deposits. Several sections of the wall have been classified geologically sensitive due to unstable localised geology, and therefore an engineered approach to vibration critical blasting was required. The use of electronic detonators allowed multiple signature (seed) holes to be incorporated into a production blast adjacent to the geologically sensitive area, therefore providing baseline vibration data to be used for future modelling with the added advantage of eliminating unnecessary pit closure downtime typically associated with a signature hole program. All subsequent blast patterns also incorporated multiple signature holes to provide additional data and allow continual updating – and therefore improved accuracy - of the blast prediction model.

Gasification is a process that converts a carbon feedstock into synthesis gas (CO+H2). Slagging gasifiers operate at high temperature and pressure and in a corrosive-wear environment from the slag. Cr2O3-based refractory linings are used to protect the steel vessel that comprises the gasifier from the aggressive gasification environment. Increasing service life of the gasifier is one of the keys for wide spread development of this technology. In support of the goals, research on the gasifier atmosphere, the slag chemistry, the interaction of Cr2O3 refractory with different feedstock mixtures (e.g., coal and petcoke) were characterized by post mortem analysis of bricks from service in gasifiers and thermodynamics simulation of the environment. Examples demonstrating how thermodynamic calculations can explain the post mortem results and make predictions of material interactions will be given. Attention is placed on the possibility of Cr+6 in different feedstock mixtures and operating conditions.

The Goldex Mine is an underground gold mine using a unique mining method where a single very large stope is being created. In order to maintain stability of the walls and roof of the stope which is 450m, 250m high and up to 120m thick, ore is left in the stope as long as possible and acts as backfill would do. At many occasions during the mining sequence, the walls will be exposed on height ranging from 30 meters up to 250 meters. A monitoring system comprising in-stope laser surveys, a seismic system and an array of extensometers and sloughmeters all remotely connected to surface is used to observe the shape and evolution of the stope. This paper will focus on the results obtained following some of the large blasts and on the long term monitoring of the stope.

The State of California, Department of Transportation is currently retrofitting a major interchange near the San Francisco area. The project is located in a highly traveled area of Oakland with light rail commuter service near many footings. Over 600 micropiles are being used in conjunction with CIDH piles for footing stabilization. A specially designed Soil Nail pile will support footings for a new light rail utility structure. Pile testing features in this contract serve as points of interest for future foundation designs. The presentation focuses on substructure issues of this incterchange retrofit. The nature of a stone deposit is rarely defined through exploration and engineering design, but more through the actual experience encountered as the mine develops; hence, issues with ground control are often at the forefront for a new mine. Ground control problems account for over 15 percent of lost-time injuries in underground stone mines. The objective of this work is to present actions taken during early development of a stone mine to mitigate the obvious effects of high horizontal stress on ground control. The mine was developed from a box cut with relatively little cover, and high horizontal stresses were not anticipated. Early recognition of possible high horizontal stress resulted in mapping of the mine using the NIOSH-developed Roof Fall Risk Index (RFRI) to provide a baseline to objectively analyze roof conditions. A program of borescoping the mine roof provided valuable roof beam thickness data and found that the roof beam was of minimal thickness, approximately 10 percent of drift width. As the mine developed, it became apparent that ground control problems related to high horizontal stress existed. A concentrated effort was made to improve ground conditions by implemeting a number of mitigation techniques. Actions taken by the mine included systematic roof support, reorientation of mining direction, a lower roof horizon, reduced span widths and reduced mining height in crosscuts to prevent running falls. These strategies resulted in signifcantly improved ground stability.

Dust emission from blast demolition and other construction activities can be a nuisance; it is widely recognized that fine particles less than 10 µm in equivalent diameter (called PM10) may cause health problems. Mist spray systems, such as rain guns, sprinklers, water/surfactant sprays (or foams) etc., are some of the most effective dust suppression methods. A large amount of research has showed that when water droplets are produced in an equal amount to that of dust particles, the airborne dust is suppressed by the agglomeration of dust and mist particles. A method for generating micro-sized mist from water, achieved by the detonation of explosives in the water tube, was suggested and is called the ‘detonationdriven water bag burst system’. There are many experimentally observed limitations of the explosioninduced water break-up process. The water bag explosion tests were simulated using the AUTODYN software, in order to investigate the aerosolization mechanisms of the detonation-driven water and water break-up process into micron-sized droplets. As a result of the numerical analyses, the diffusion direction of water when detonating in the central interior part of water tube was radioactive and significantly stronger than when detonating in the bottom exterior part; this is due to the compressive flow of the volume change inside of the water tube, which resulted from the blasting wave inside of the tube, as well as the reflected pressure on the ground. Blast tests of full-scaled reinforced concrete columns were conducted to verify the effectiveness of the suggested detonation-driven water bag burst system. The water breakdown and dispersion that occurred while blasting the reinforced concrete columns were observed using a high-speed camera, and dust generation was monitored using four density detectors. The suggested detonation-driven water bag burst system showed that the average dust density decreased by up to 7 mg/m3.

With gold first discovered at Carrick in 1864, exploration and mining on the Carrick Goldfield in Central Otago, New Zealand, has now been ongoing for more than 130 years. Recorded historical hard rock production from up to 52 different mining claims from 1864 to about 1921 is 24,047 ounces (oz) of gold.   Since 1980 Amoco Minerals New Zealand Limited, CRA Exploration Pty. Limited, Amax Gold Mines New Zealand Limited and Summit Gold (New Zealand) Limited have conducted modem systematic exploration campaigns targeted at locating shear controlled gold bearing quartz lodes and stockwork deposits. More than NZ $1million has been spent by these companies on aerial photography, geological mapping, stream sediment surveys, soil and rock chip geochemistry as well as reverse circulation (RC) percussion and diamond drilling.   RC drilling by Summit Resources in 1997 has identified a 1,500 m long zone of low-grade gold mineralisation at Lower Carrick, with an average grade of 1.00 g/t Au over a 14 m average thickness. This gold mineralisation, hosted within a low angle shear zone, has analogies with the Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone in eastern Otago. Recent exploration and drilling at Carrick has revealed the potential to discover large (>0.5 million ounce (Moz)) low-grade bulk shear controlled quartz vein and stockwork gold deposits similar to those now being mined at Macraes.

The only economically significant deposit of dolomite in New Zealand is at Mount Burnett, in north-west Nelson. The dolomite, associated with marbles and schists, is complexly deformed, and is of Paleozoic age.A very large quantity is present, although the recoverable amount is to some extent limited by the difficult terrain.Physically the quality of the dolomite is excellent. It is a tough, durable, fine grained rock. Chemically it is a little more variable. The range and frequency o~ the more important impurities are illustrated by hlstograms, as is the "dolomite factor"-a measure of the amount of the mineral dolomite in the rock. lbe dolomite factor averages 84 per cent, the remainder of the rock consisting largely of calcite. Quarrying, milling, production, and uses are described. In 1966 production reached 13,250 tons.

Terramin Australia LimitedÆs Angas Lead and Zinc Mine operates in the unique and picturesque environment of Adelaide Hills, 60 km South East of the Adelaide city centre itself. The mine was granted approval for construction by the South Australian Government in April 2007 and the Process Plant was constructed and commissioned in July 2008. This paper outlines the background to the plant design and the approval process given the close proximity to the local town of Strathalbyn, with a major focus on the commissioning learnings from the Concentrator startup for future reference and a review of the operational performance of the Concentrator throughout the first year of successful production versus design and expectations.

Ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (ANFO) explosives are unstable in hot, reactive sulphide-rich ground at Mount Isa. Under certain conditions associated with background heat, moisture, and chemical impurities from natural oxidation, ANFO composites in contact with hot ground disproportionate and the ammonium nitrate can undergo rapid exothermic reactions with sulphide.Reactions can occur in confined charges from prolonged contact with reactive sulphides, or by contamination with sulphide in loading. Partial interaction can result in misfires or premature detonation. Spilt, scattered and unpropagated explosive will undergo further reaction in sulphide-rich environments. ANFO-sulphide interaction is invariably exothermic and causes an irreversible chemical transformation of the ore.The heat generated during reaction may be dissipated, heating the environment, or rapidly accumulated to yield hot spots or areas in excess of 400°C. These can result in forced ignition of bulk sulphide and sustained combustion.Thermal analysis was used to define the critical conditions for ANFO-sulphide interaction and sulphide combustion.The occurrence of incandescent ore is attributed to the thermal interaction between exothermic hydrolysis oxidation, ANFO-sulphide, and combustion processes.Chemical agents and control methods have been developed to prevent ANFO-induced oxidation and combustion.

The head loss caused by metallurgical sampling for slurry streams can be reduced by metallurgical sampler design. When the process volumetric flow rate is reduced by vertical static cutters before the sampling by an equal number of moving cutters to the static cutters, the installation requires less installation head space than other sampling arrangements and is easy to accommodate at suitable locations in the process. Low head loss reduces building costs for the processing plant and operational costs during the lifetime of the plant.The presence of a possible systematic bias in the particle size distribution, solids density and elemental composition between an Outotec MSA 2/50 metallurgical slurry sampler sample and MSA 2/50 manually sampled reject have been studied by a customer. The paired samples were taken as simultaneously as possible. The customer evaluated the possible bias using a paired t-test and provided the assay results to Outotec for further evaluation.The results of the paired t-test showed no systematic bias in particle size distribution, solid density or assayed analytes, except in one analyte with low content and a high relative error. The high relative error in one analyte may have been caused by the same calibration model used in a X-ray fluorescence analyser for both high elemental-content concentrate and very low elemental-content tailings samples. The sampled stream is the tailings of a previous process stage.The results of the t-test were studied further using analysis of variance to reveal the error sources in samples. The results showed no bias between the samples collected from the MSA 2/50 reject and composite samples collected of the MSA 2/50 sample stream. The courier online analyser data was also available for evaluation of representativeness to the process stream.The analysis results of the courier online analysis reveals no bias between the MSA 2/50 reject samples, MSA 2/50 sample stream composite samples and online analysis results during the comparative sample collection period.CITATION:Loimi, J, Minkkinen, P and Korpela, T, 2017. Wardrop Engineering and the Placer Dome?s Campbell Mine Design Team utilized leading edge directional raise boring techniques and an innovative, remote controlled application of steel fibre reinforced shotcrete ground support to achieve improved mine ventilation and a superior, safety focused secondary emergency egress. While more standardized methods may have provided a sufficient solution to either the requirement for a ventilation raise or for a traditional escape ladder way, innovative methodology ensured both objectives were met with a single, enhanced solution. Placer Dome committed to provide a solution that minimized energy consumption, optimized air delivery and facilitated an escape way focused on minimizing the negative physiological aspects associated with mine evacuation. The project was successful in providing a new airway, returning 47 m3/s (100,000 cfm) from the 39 Level to 30 Level, minimizing risk to the raise equipping crew and providing a fully equipped escape hoist. The resulting secure escape environment provided an efficient means of evacuating personnel working at depth without necessitating a potentially dangerous exhausting climb to surface. The project has substantiated, that optimized safety focused design can be achieved without jeopardizing project economics.

This paper presents a brief account of the plant which has been developed at Port Pirie to recover, by vacuum distillation, the greater part of the zinc content of desilverized lead. The present plant is an experimental unit, which is run in conjunction with the normal refinery practice, but can be cut out of the circuit. It will shortly be dismantled and duplicate units will be built on the sites chosen for the final plant installation.The unit described here has treated flows of 16 to 37 tons per hour of desilverized lead, to recover 90 to 95 per cent of the zinc contained in it. It is not intended here to detail all aspects of the vacuum dezincing operation, nor the developments which precededthe adoption of this design. The essential features of the present plant will be described and, where these are peculiar to the present experimental location, the intended alteration for the final plant will also be mentioned. OUTLINE OF PLANT AND PROCESSLead issues from the continuous desilverizing kettle at about 350° C. containing about 0·57 per cent Zn. It is conveyed by a tiled launder to the preheater, where it is heated to 580-620° C.Hot lead from the preheater enters the vacuum vessel via a barometric leg. From a reservoir holding about 19 tons of lead it falls by gravity in a thin film exposed to high vacuum (20-50 microns)3 and leaves the vessel via a barometric leg, entering the lead pot. The lead leaves this pot at 540-560° C., containing 0·03 to 0·06 per cent Zn, which is removed, together with residual antimony of 0.02 to 0·06 per cent, by a separate final refining process.

Underground equipment owners and users in order to compete and succeed in being viable business propositions must continually balance costs with productivity. By reducing their hourly ownership, operation and maintenance costs and increasing their hourly production, the cost per unit of material mined will be optimized.
