A number of challenges face platinum concentrator plant operators. These challenges include the increase in operating costs, the increase in smelter cost for the processing of concentrate, the shortage and cost of power, and the tightening of specifications on concentrate quality by the toll-smelting operations. Over the years the focus has moved from extracting the platinum group metals (PGM) from the Merensky Reef to the UG2 reef. This has a number of advantages, including the higher ?basket price? for UG2 concentrate, reduced mining cost per unit volume as a result of the higher density of UG2, and the reduction in overall concentrate tonnage to be smelted. In many cases the Merensky ore has been fully exploited and it makes sense for the focus to shift to the UG2 ore that can be accessed through the Merensky shaft infrastructure. The presence of relatively high levels of chromite in UG2 concentrate is, however, a major disadvantage due to the problems associated with smelting such a concentrate in conventional submerged arc furnaces. In addition to increasing the specification on the minimum PGM grade of concentrates, smelters have had to impose strict specifications on the levels of chromite in the concentrate. The threat of high penalties has forced concentrators to change their modus operandi, often resulting in a significant loss in recovery. The final concentrate grades and PGM recoveries are shown to vary significantly throughout the industry. The reasons for this include varying ore mineralogy and different operating philosophies. This would therefore imply that the opportunity exists to optimize the operations by considering fundamental aspects such as the PGM mineralogy and the application of appropriate technologies. By returning to the fundamentals of flotation and applying the findings of detailed process reviews, it has been possible to increase the concentrate PGM grade, reduce the concentrate chromite grade, and in some cases increase the recovery of PGM to concentrate. This paper presents case studies where this approach has been used to successfully optimize concentrator performance, resulting in lower operating cost and higher PGM production. I report results of over 850 microprobe analyses of sulfides, sulfosalts and electrum from the Favona adularia-sericite epithermal deposit of the Waihi district in the southern Hauraki Goldfield of New Zealand. Pyrite and marcasite from altered wall rocks that enclose the veins are stoichiometric, with compositions of FeS2, and no significant trace elements. In contrast, pyrite in veins commonly contains appreciable As (up to 3.2 wt per cent), and locally contains several tenths of a percent of Cu, Zn, Co, Ag and Sb. Vein pyrite may contain up to 0.22 per cent Au, but Au contents do not show a positive correlation with As. Limited electrum data indicate that it ranges from Ag0.47 Au0.53 to Ag0.54Au0.41Cu0.01Zn0.04. Chalcopyrite is stoichiometric CuFeS2, and most galena is PbS, but some galena contains up to 4.4 wt per cent Se, which substitutes for S in its lattice. The galena is not argentiferous; the highest Ag content is 0.45 wt per cent Ag. Sphalerite averages 4 mol per cent FeS, but ranges up to 15 mol per cent. Tetrahedrites [(Cu,Ag)10(Zn,Fe)2(As,Sb)4S13] show variable substitution, but most are Cu- Zn- and Sb-rich. Veins also contain aguilarite (Ag4SeS), stromeyerite (CuAgS), naumannite (Ag2Se), and mckinstryite [(Ag,Cu)2S].

The Grasberg porphyry copper-gold deposit of Freeport Indonesia Inc., an 81% owned subsidiary of Freeport-McMoRan Inc., lies within the Ertsberg Mineral District in central Irian Jaya, Indonesia. The Grasberg deposit was discovered during a drilling campaign initiated in early 1988. Production at the open pit Grasberg deposit commenced in December 1989. The Grasberg copper-gold orebody is contained with a young igneous complex of dioritic composition which intrudes limestones of the Tertiary New Guinea Group. Alteration is typical of porphyry copper deposits worldwide except that higher grade primary chalcopyrite with significant gold values is associated with a centrally located zone of strong quartz stockwork.

Platinum-group minerals (PGM) are recorded from a number of localities along theWaiau River, western Southland, and the south coast of the South Island, New Zealand. At each locality, small amounts of PGMs were recovered as by-products of historical gold mining operations. During the period 1890-1950 an estimated 1000-2000 oz. of æplatinumÆ were recovered from the region, the only area within New Zealand where PGM have been commercially exploited. The PGM suite of southern New Zealand consists of Pt-Fe alloys, IPGE (iridium subgroup, platinum-group elements) alloys, sperrylite (PtAs2), cooperite (PtS) and braggite ((Pt,Pd)S). The composition of Pt-Fe alloy exhibits considerable variation and two compositional populations are recognised. Some Pt-Fe alloy grains are chemically zoned. Iridium is the most abundant IPGE alloy phase and often contains considerable Pt, in contrast to osmium and ruthenium alloys. Cooperite and braggite grains are characterised by extremely low concentrations of Ni.   Exsolution of osmium and iridium from Pt-Fe alloy and Pt-Fe alloy from iridium is observed Several PGM host mineral inclusions which vary from single to poly-phase, display rounded to equant outlines and range in diameter from greater than 100 ¦m to less than 5 ¦m. Olivine and Ni-sulphide inclusions are only present within IPGE alloys. Pt-Fe alloy, cooperite, braggite and sperrylite host Cu-Fe sulphides, a wide variety of PGM, clinopyroxene, amphibole, magnetite and plagioclase within inclusions. Sperrylite also hosts Pd bismuthiotellurides, gold and several potassium-rich silicate phases. Similarities in inclusion phases and mineral chemistry from several localities suggest that the PGM are derived from a single (as yet unidentified), probably calc-alkaline magmatic source. This source is situated somewhere along the margins of the western Southland sedimentary basin where PGM liberated by erosion are transported down the Waiau River and dispersed eastwards along the coast by strong longshore currents.

An overview is given of the matte melting process used for the beneficiation of South African Platinum Group Metal (PGM) ores. Most producers use six-electrode furnaces to melt the concentrate and Pierce Smith converters to oxidize excess iron sulphide from the furnace matte. Concentrates from two reef-types (the so-called Merensky and UG-2 reefs) dominate the feedstock supply. Concentrate from the Merensky reef is low in chromium and do not pose significant melting problems. Concentrates from the UG-2 reef contain much higher levels of chromium, which results in the formation of chromium-rich spinels during melting. This is attributed to the low solubility of chromium in furnace slag under typical operating conditions (an oxygen partial pressure of 10-8-10-9bar at temperatures of 1550°C to 1600°C). During the converting process care is needed to avoid excessively oxidizing conditions, which result in cobalt, nickel and copper losses to the slag. High nickel losses result in the formation ofFe2NiO4(trevorite), which often forms solid solutions with FeCr2O4and Fe3O4. In future, the main challenge in the processing of South African PGM ores will be to cope with ever increasing levels of chromium in the concentrate. A short-term solution to the problem would be to melt the concentrate under slightly reducing conditions to promote the formation of CrO, which is more soluble in the slag than Cr2O3. A longer-term solution to the problem would be to abandon the current matte-smelting process in favour of an alloy-based process, which would offer total flexibility with respect to the amount of chromium that can be tolerated in the feed. Several underground coal mines currently operating in the Beckley District of West Virginia are experiencing serious roof and floor problems. A significant portion of the estimated two billion tons of coal resources may be lost as a result of these ground control problems. Preliminary studies by the Bureau of Mines indicated that these problems are due in part to a high horizontal stress field. During this contract study, a field program was conducted to quantify the horizontal in situ stress. A total of 14 overcoring sites (using the Bureau of Mines strain-relief overcoring technique) in five mines were drilled producing 53 data sets. Analysis of the data was done to provide in situ horizontal stresses for each of the five mine, and for the district as a whole. Stress data indicate horizontal stresses far in excess of that predicted by theory and in some cases, up to six times the estimated vertical stress. In addition to the field testing, a detailed computer modeling study was conducted using finite element and boundary integral (displacement discontinuity) methods. Verification of in situ stresses was obtained by the models and analysis of various development geometries, mining methods and remedial techniques were conducted. Recommendations for reducing ground control problems and future studies are presented.

The bulk of the world?s platinum production originates from the Merensky and UG2 reefs within the Bushveld Complex, South Africa. Both the Merensky and UG2 reefs are disrupted by faults, dykes, potholes and iron-rich ultramafic pegmatite bodies (IRUPs)?features that impact negatively on production, planning and safety. It is therefore advantageous to know of their presence and geometry ahead of mining. To date, no geophysical technique has been successfully applied to the routine mapping of mine-scale potholes and IRUPs. These disruptive features may vary from a few metres to several tens of metres in diameter. In this paper the applicability of in-mine electrical resistance tomography (ERT) to map potholes and other disruptions to the continuity of the Merensky and UG2 reefs ahead of mining is demonstrated using two case studies.

"This is an account of the expansion of Texasgulf's Timmins concentrator by the building of a fourth circuit.The original capacity of the mine and concentrator was 3.6 million tons per year of ore. In 1974, Texasgulf decided to increase that capacity by about one third to 4.8 million tons per year. It was planned that the increased capacity would be available by mid-1978.The expansion involved work at the rninesite, increased railroad capacity, and a new circuit in the concentrator, and it is the concentrator expansion which is described here.In 1974, the minesite drew its ore from the open pit. The pit was being phased out and was to be replaced by No. 1 mine. To allow for the expansion, a second mine was required. The railroad was capable of handling 18 car trains. Its capacity had to be increased to 27 cars per train and this, in turn, required two new locomotives. Each of these alone cost half a million dollars.The concentrator building in 1974 contained the concentrating equipment and miscellaneous services (such as machine shop, warehouse, analytical lab). The grinding and flotation sections were divided into three circuits ('A', 'B', & 'C'). 'A' and 'B' circuits treated copper-zinc ore and 'C' circuit treated the much more difficult copperzinc- lead ore. This 'C' circuit had been modified over the years to implement improvements in the metallurgy."

BHP New Zealand Steel produces iron from titaniferous ironsand by a direct reduction process comprising multihearth furnaces/rotary kilns/electric iron melters. The electric iron melter is a six-in-line rectangular submerged-arc furnace which takes the partially reduced ironsand (80 per cent metallisation) from the rotary kiln and completes the reduction process to produce iron of nominally three per cent carbon. As the melter operates at around 1500¦C and under very hostile conditions, it is near-impossible to obtain any basic operating parameters such as the velocity and temperature distribution in the slag and in the molten iron. As a first attempt to understand the operating conditions inside the melter, a scaled room-temperature model using wax and water to represent the slag and iron, was constructed. This paper will report on some of the preliminary model results on the temperature distribution.

Problems resulting from underground mines in three inactive mining districts in Colorado were investigated. The purpose was to determine how these problems could be reduced or eliminated in new closings -- essentially by benefitting from lessons of the past. Mines in Leadville, Westcliffe and the Cripple Creek-Victor districts were evaluated. Two basic types of problems were found to exist in the districts: environmental degradation and hazardous conditions. Environmental problems result largely from acid and toxic drainage from the runes and from leaching of surface waste rock piles and mill tailings impoundment. The acid drainage contributes high levels of metals to streams and deposits sediment in the stream bottoms. Erosion of waste piles is a lesser problem. Hazardous conditions from open or improperly sealed mine shafts and adits, mine subsidence pits, and from deteriorating and unsafe surface structures are common to the three districts. These problems become worse with the ravages of time and vandalism. Engineering solutions which would correct or reduce many of these problems are presented. These recommendations should also be applied to new mine closures, however, more basic changes are needed to effectively implement improved mine closures. The changes must take place in the areas of legislation, mining practices and education. Legislated regulations should realistically reflect the needs of both the mine operators, protection of the environment and the best interest of the general public. Benefits should be provided for compliance with regulations instead of penalties being assessed for noncompliance. Hazardous conditions and environmental problems associated with mines can be alleviated through improved mine design and effective cloning procedures. Education should provide an appreciation by the general public of past and present problems facing mine operators. This will result in an improved mining climate which, in turn, will insure a continuing supply of minerals to meet increasing needs.

The Bureau of Mines is doing research and development work on a coal-fired gas turbine plant initially developed by the Locomotive Development Committee, (LDC) of Bituminous Coal Research, Inc. The Bureau is redesigning the turbine blading and some of the auxiliary equipment, and is reerecting, the plant at the Morgantown (W. Va.) Coal Research Center. The present goal is a 1,500-hour run at virtually the same operating conditions used by the LDC in their final 1,100-hour test with the turbine. This will allow the Bureau to properly evaluate the new blade design. Erosion of the turbine blades (particularly the roots) by ash in the hot gases from the combustion of coal was the most serious problem in extended operation in earlier experimental work. New blades made of Stellite6 are being fabricated for the stator and rotor, and armored wear strips of titanium carbide will be inserted in the blades at the areas of probable maximum ash velocity and concentration. The trailing edges of the rotor and stator blades are being thickened and thinned, respectively, to induce the ash to travel to the casing and prevent it from returning to the base of the rotor blades. The first stage rotor and second stage stator blades are being removed to provide an annular space for maximum quantities of coal ash to centrifuge to the casing. Additional blades will be added to most of the rows in the stator to stop secondary flow of dust-laden gas toward the rotor. A contract has been awarded for fabrication of the new blades. The 1,500-hour run will be started as soon as the new blades are installed.

Gravity separation techniques have been in use in the mineral sands industry for decades; from the Reichert cone to Wilfley tables, Wright sluices and the Kelsey Jig, all attempting that elusive perfect gravity separation. Just as the gravity separation industry evolved, Richards Bay Minerals also evolved in their use and approach to gravity separation. This paper discusses the history of gravity separation at Richards Bay Minerals and briefly comments on future developments. History Primary Concentration Richards Bay Mineral?s (RBM) first mining concentrator and mineral separation plant commenced operation in 1977 to process ilmenite, rutile and zircon bearing dunal deposits along the northern Natal coast. The orebody contained a greater proportion of non-valuable magnetic heavy mineral in the SG range of 3 to 4 compared to West Australian and Florida USA deposits, making mineral separation more difficult(1). The deposit was mined using two dredges feeding a floating 2000 tph concentrator. Concentrator feed was screened and fed to two four-stage circuits consisting of primary, scavenger, cleaner and recleaner Reichert cones [see Figure 1]. The primary units were fed at a rate of 80 tph and a density of 60% solids by weight.

A working group from Anglo American, BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto and Xstrata reviewed supply and demand for graduates from mining education departments in countries where they normally recruit: Australia, Canada, Chile, Western Europe, South Africa and USA. Departments are typically small and increasingly unsustainable, resulting in a steady rate of closure. Supply and demand for graduates in the minerals industry is cyclical, with supply lagging behind demand and trending downwards. Currently, supply is tight and the industry is trying to expand with an ageing workforce. Greater collaboration between universities and within the industry is recommended to address these issues.

A rock mass responds to excavation according to the properties of the intact rock, the network of contained discontinuities and the susceptibility of the rock mass to weathering. Large deformation often occurs when one of these components causes the rock mass to have a low strength relative to the stress conditions. Analysis of such large deformations forms a significant feature of current numerical modelling in rock mechanics. A practical large deformation problem of roadways in a coal mine is described, demonstrating the requirements for improving numerical techniques. The development of a numerical model is then summarised with particular attention to several concepts pertinent to large deformation analysis in geomechanics. A numerical case study is presented in which the developed finite-element model is used and the results are compared with the in-situ measurements. Conclusions are drawn for rock engineering that are also relevant to both civil engineering and mining engineering projects

Strategies and achievements in the Asian steel industry to construct industrial ecological chain are reviewed largely in the case of Japan, Korea and China. Emphasis is placed on the development of resource circulatory system for the minimisation of various wastes and emissions of green house gases (GHG), toxic gases and polluting particulates. The minimisation includes:Rationalisation of iron and steelmaking processes; Implementation of available relevant measures/technologies; Life cycle assessment in designing steel from semis to assembled products; Reduction, reuse and recycling of materials and energies; and Utilisation of core competence technologies to process domestic and industrial wastes. In view of global nature of the above wastes- and emission-issues, inter-industrial linkage and international cooperation across the borders in the Asian countries have become more important. Inter-industrial linkage definitely serves to cut back the wastes and emissions. Examples of such linkage and factors influencing the sustainability of the linkage are described with expectation for further development of the linkage. Importance of international cooperation cannot be overstressed under the circumstances where steel production in China exceeded 220 Mt and world production exceeded 945 Mt in 2003 and is still increasing. Practical measures are discussed to enhance the linkage and cooperation for effectively promoting the reduction, reuse and recycling, including implications for the nonferrous industry.

IN general, billet-type or long slender ingots are used when it is desired to produce directly from the ingot in one conversion a product of medium or small cross-sectional area. They are designed to eliminate the blooming and billet-mill stages of the usual procedure. As used at Connors, they constitute a means of keeping a continuous rolling mill busy in the production of high-quality small rods, small angles, hoop stock, baling ties and concrete reinforcing rods without the need for a blooming or billet mill. They represent sound steel with the best surface that is commercially practical to use in the rolling of small continuous mill products.
