This report presents the results of a program to improve, using existing and proven technology, unstable highwall conditions through better blasting practices in Appalachian strip coal mines. Better borehole blasting agent distribution and optimization of burden, spacing, and delay periods allowing satisfactory breakage with minimal backbreak were the objectives. At a selected field site, geologic conditions were closely examined with regard to joint orientation and spacing, and resulting slope stability considerations. A test series of eight blasts was completed and the resultant highwall monitored by repetitive photography. The study of drilling and blasting economics along with equipment performance led to an economic model of blast parameters and the identification of blast design cost benefits. The work demonstrated that small strip mining companies' are able to achieve a more stable highwall excavation utilizing presently available technology, equipment, and explosive products at improved operational cost and safety.

The International Ground Control Conference in Mining has always provided an open forum for the publication, presentation, discussion, and often heated debate on roof bolting systems mostly with attention to how, when, and why they work. During the last 24 Conferences at least 170 papers have been presented by International Experts on these “simple” devices that range in length from 30-inches to 20 ft and from 5/8 to 2 inches in diameter. Roof bolts are primarily mechanically anchored, glued, cemented, or driven. Bolts are placed vertically, angled, or tied together with special fixtures (trusses and slings). They have been termed active, passive, stick-slip, and several other descriptive acronyms or mining slang expressions. This retrospective paper will present the changes in bolt types and usage, point out some of the biggest myths and hail the most significant advances (according to the authors’ opinions of course).

There is one large-scaled iron ore deposit in Inner Mongolia of China, but it is very complex which includes about 170 types of minerals and 71 elements. The hematite, magnetite are mainly iron ores. It is difficult that the iron mineral can be separated efficiently by common dressing methods due to the complexity, and the iron concentrates in the mineral processing factory contains many foreign substance such as K, Na and Si so that the process in iron mill is influenced because of the foreign substance, so it is vital reducing the foreign substance.

INTRODUCTION, The transalpine rail routes in Switzerland are well over one hundred years old. As the established routes no longer meet the demands of the continually increasing volumes of rail traffic between north and south, two new routes through the Alps were planed. The old Gotthard rail line is in fact a mountain railway. The northern and the southern access ramps?with a maximum speed of 80 km/h and a maximum slope of 2.2%?reach the old Gotthard rail tunnel at an elevation of approximately 1,100 m above sea level. This is approximately 900 m higher than the city of Milan. In 1992, the Swiss electorate people voted with an overwhelming majority in favor of the project to build the new base routes through the Alps. The Swiss voted again in 1998 in favor of the financing proposal for the new infrastructure. Swiss Federal Railways together with the BLS Lötschbergbahn were commissioned for the realization and management of the Gotthard and Lötschberg routes. AlpTransit Gotthard Ltd., founded by Swiss Federal Railways, was given the task of managing the design and realization of the Gotthard route until the start of regular service. As part of a research program for recovering alumina from domestic nonbauxitic resources, the Bureau of Mines investigated a lime-sinter, caustic leach technology for anorthosite. This report discusses the unit operations--feed preparation, sintering, and leaching. Acceptable pellets for the bench-scale sintering studies were prepared from mixtures of minus 200-mesh anorthosite and limestone using water alone as the pelletizing agent. Heating pellets at 1,270° to 1,360° C for periods of 0.5 to 2 hr, followed by a 15-min soaking period at 700° C and cooling to room temperature, produced a sinter that dusted to more than 90 pct minus 65 mesh. The weight ratio of limestone to anorthnsite was critical in producing sinter exhibiting good dusting and leaching characteristics. A ratio of 2.0 was optimum for the bulk samples of anorthosite and limestone used in this research. Leach solutions from lower ratio sinters were unstable; gelation became progressively more severe with higher ratio sinters. Leaching the dusted sinter with 10-pct Na2CO3 at 60° C extracted 85 to 90 pct of the alumina in a product solution containing about 50 g/l A1203. Leach residue in contact with pregnant solution tended to set up as a rigid gel as a result of cementation, comp action, and gelation. The presence of a calcium-sodium zeolite [(Cn,Na2)6?(Al2Si04)12?27-3OH20] in the ungelled residues seemed to be the main difference between gelled and ungelled residues.

"According to Darcy’s equation, the rate of dewatering varies as inverse square of the surface area of the particles to be dewatered and is proportional to the pressure drop across a filter cake. Thus, the difficulty in dewatering fine mineral concentrates can be overcome by using high-pressure filters. When treating ultrafine particles, however, it is often necessary to further dewater the filter cake using a thermal dryer. In the present work, novel dewatering aids that can reduce the pressure requirement have been developed. The reagents are designed to reduce surface tension, increase particle hydrophobicity and increase capillary radius, all at the same time. They were tested for dewatering mineral and coal concentrates in both laboratory and pilot-scale tests. The results show that the use of the novel dewatering aids can substantially reduce cake moistures and, at the same time, increase throughput. In this communication, the case history of using the reagents commercially at the Garpenberg concentrator is given. The use of the novel dewatering aids allowed the operators to use a vacuum filter to obtain desired cake moistures and obviate the need to use a thermal dryer.INTRODUCTIONDewatering is an integral part of mineral and coal processing operations, as it is necessary to remove water from concentrates (or clean coal) to minimize shipping costs, meet contract specifications, and recycle the process water. Part 2 gives short abstracts of publications that appeared during fiscal year 1962; in general, the research reported in these publications antedates the report period. Part 3 gives the results of an investigation which, although too limited to warrant separate publication, merits presentation in some detail because of current interest in ammonium nitrate-fuel oil compositions.

"The demand for energy has continued to rise worldwide in line with population growth. The majority of South Africa’s electricity is supplied by coal-fired power stations. The amount of fine coal (-2 mm) generated at coal processing plants has increased, due mainly to mechanized mining methods. Fine coal retains more water, which lowers its heating value.Drying the coal is costly and it is difficult to achieve the required moisture content. Consequently, coal fines are often discarded. An estimated 8% of the total energy value of mined coal is lost1.Fluidized bed technology is often used to dry coal thermally, but this method is expensive and has an adverse environmental impact. The objective of this study was to investigate the removal of moisture from fine coal (<2 mm) in a fluidized bed operated with dry fluidizing air at moderate temperatures as the drying agent. The effects of different air temperatures and relative humidity levels were investigated in a controlled environment. The study further investigated the influence of coal particle size on moisture removal.The drying rate was found to increase with increasing temperature. The relative humidity of the drying air had a more pronounced effect on the drying rate, even at temperatures as low as 25°C.. It became more challenging to remove moisture as the particle size decreased. The gain in calorific value was greater than the energy required to dry the coal samples, showing that a fluidized bed using moderately warm dry air is an energy-efficient drying technology. A key environmental management issue associated with mining projects is tailing disposal. In high rainfall environments this is particularly challenging and generally requires the discharge of excess water from a tailing dam to adjacent streams or coastal waters. Such discharges can potentially have adverse impacts on downstream water quality and the environmental values associated with these waters, such as providing a drinking water supply for local villagers, maintaining a fisheries resource or protecting a fish species of high conservation significance. An alternative to the construction and operation of a conventional tailing dam is Deep Sea Tailing Placement (DSTP). The key features of such a system are:Discharge of the tailing slurry at considerable depth (approximately 120 - 150 m) below the oceanÆs surface. This requires a pipeline to be laid from the process plant to a mix tank, where the tailing is mixed with seawater and entrained air released. The pipeline then continues down the ocean floor to the required discharge depth, which is below the surface mixed layer and the euphotic zone. After discharge, formation of a density current which continues to descend along the ocean floor as long as the slope is sufficiently steep. Final deposition of the tailing in an area where the slope of the ocean floor is insufficient to maintain the density current. This typically occurs at depths of more than 800 m. Water quality issues associated with DSTP include: Impacts on the oceanic water column due to the formation of subsurface plumes which break away from the descending density current. The occurrence of elevated concentrations of contaminants in the interstitial waters of the deposited tailing solids. Fluxes of contaminants from the tailing deposits into the overlying oceanic water column. This paper discusses the water quality aspects of DSTP with particular reference to a case study in Papua New Guinea. The evaluations undertaken as part of the DSTP impact assessment included consideration of both the short- and long-term chemical behaviour of contaminants and bioassays, within the appropriate water quality assessment framework.

The Olympic Dam iron-oxide copper-gold (IOCG) uranium-silver deposit is second in size only to Norilsk, the gigantic metalliferous deposit. Olympic Dam is the largest publicly declared uranium, fifth largest copper and third largest gold resource. The deposit is typified by texturally destructive brecciation and intense iron metasomatism of the Roxby Downs Granite, bedded clastic facies rocks and mafic-ultramafic dykes. The deposit contains over 100 minerals. Copper mineralisation consists of chalcopyrite, bornite and chalcocite. Uraninite, coffinite and brannerite are the dominant uranium-bearing minerals. Gold mineralisation consists of electrum, tellurides and Au-Cu alloys. Hessite is the major silver-bearing mineral. The economic minerals are disseminated throughout the breccia matrix where the average grain sizes of the Cu-sulfide, uranium, gold and silver minerals are ~50, 20, &lt;5, &lt;5 microns, respectively.A significant number of sampling theory-based test programs have been completed since the mid-1990s to establish sampling nomographs, select appropriate sampling (ie split versus chip and interval lengths) and sample preparation protocols, quantify the errors associated with each subsampling stage, determine the practical uncertainty limits of Olympic Dam matrix-matched standards, and identify improvement opportunities related to the ongoing assaying quality assurance / quality control (QA/QC) program. Invaluable knowledge and unexpected insights gained from sampling studies at Olympic Dam have helped to improve our understanding of the distribution of economic and deleterious elements within the Olympic Dam deposit.CITATION:Ehrig, K J and Pitard, F F, 2017. The Southern Alps of New Zealand and the mountains of Taiwan are both young transpressive orogens characterised by rapid uplift and exhumation, high heat flow and vigorous surface processes. Comparing and contrasting the two provides an ideal framework through which to explore the structural and lithological controls on fluid and gold mobility during collisional deformation. Both have two fluid flow systems centred about their drainage divide with shallow topographically-driven meteoric water above a deeper flow system dominated by mineralising rock-exchanged fluids. Despite similar tectonic settings, the distribution of heat flow, hot springs and veins in the two orogens are different. Taiwan has higher heat flow, distributed hot springs and localised veining whereas the Southern Alps have a narrow heat flow anomaly, localised warm springs and widespread veining. We use three-dimensional numerical models to evaluate key parameters that affect fluid flow and gold mineralisation. Models show that differences in crustal strength and thickness affect the locus, scale and rate of crustal fluid flow and hence influence gold deposition at a variety of scales. We explore how surface topography can lead to localised changes in the stress state, facilitating the switching of principal stresses and hence vein orientations.CITATION:Upton, P and Craw, D, 2015. The injection of grouting compounds into the consolidated rock surrounding underground mine workings has long been practiced for the purpose of sealing against water flows. In more recent times however, grout injection has also found application for the purpose of rock mass reinforcement. Mines in Europe,America, Australia and elsewhere now make use of significant quantities of chemical grouts in both preventative and remedial strata control work. &nbsp; Despite the increasing usage of grouting for these purposes, there is limited knowledge about the effects of grout injection on the rock mass, and acceptance of the method is by no means universal. In some cases grouting has been applied with little understanding of the factors that control its effectiveness, and disappointing results have been obtained. &nbsp; This paper reviews the basic concepts of how grout injection may contribute to the control of rock surrounding underground mine excavations, and highlights the factors which may serve to limit the efficacy of the method and the uncertainties that complicate the appraisal of grouting as a method of strata control.

The Zagros long tunnel is one of the main components of Sirvan water transfer project in western Iran. It is approximately 48 km in length and consisted of two lots. The second 26 km lot of this tunnel is under construction by a 6.73 m diameter double shield (DS) TBM. The tunnel passes through several formations with wide range rock mass qualities. During the tunnel alignment, changes in rock quality were highly frequent from poor to very good. The encountered geological conditions required TBM operation to change frequently from hard rock to soft, dry to flowing, sticky to nonsticky ground (and vice versa), more often than expected. In the course of tunneling, the machine has encountered nearly many adverse geologic conditions. The most important problems have been sudden high volume water inflow into the tunnel, sticky ground, and gas seepage, all of which resulted in reduced TBM advance rates. This study will high-light two difficult ground conditions including large water ingress and sticky ground and also the related problems encountered by the TBM along 8 km of excavated tunnel. In sticky grounds, cleaning of the clogged cutter head caused many delays and contributed to additional downtime. Application of some operational modifications, including decreased TBM thrust showed satisfactory results in such cases. While reduced thrust resulted in reduced penetration rate, but the overall TBM advance was greatly improved by the increase utilization rate and elimination of down time related to cleaning of the head. To cope with high water inflow, application of preventive measures such as pre-grouting has proved to be a more efficientsolution. The sealing of ground water inflow also decreased seepage of dangerous H2S gas and other chemicals such as hydrocarbons accompanying the groundwater.

The dissolution of the naturally occurring mineral zircon (ZrSiO4) is examined after ball milling it with magnesium oxide for up to 100 hours in a laboratory mill. There was little effect on the solubility for the initial two hours where size reduction of the zircon was considered to be the dominant effect. Beyond two hours the dissolution increased as a function of the square root of milling time. X-ray diffraction of the powders did not reveal the identity of the soluble phase. However, a nanocrystalline phase was present after milling and this is thought to be the soluble phase.

A 10-channel automatic data acquisition system has been designed and environmentally packaged for use with underground strain-gage applications and associated instruments. The system uses commercially available components and is assembled in two plastic enclosures. Environmental control is provided through a specially designed (compressed-air) air-conditioning system and water-resistant cabling. Accuracies of 0.01 pct and resolution of 1 µV have been obtained in underground tests.

A thermodynamic analysis of the sulphation of rare-earth phosphates and the water-leaching of rare-earth sulphates was used to guide experimental work on the sulphation and leaching of concentrates from Pitinga. It was concluded that the sulphuric acid digestion of xenotime is technically feasible and could be used industrially to produce yttrium and other rare-earth oxides. Yttrium extractions of more than 90% were obtained by digestion at 503 K for 4 h at an acid:concentrate ratio of 2:1 with particle size -0.053 mm. The apparent activation energy at temperatures less than 473 K, as determined from the Arrhenius plot, was 11.0 kJ/mol, indicating that the reaction is controlled by the diffusion of the reactants or products through the sulphate layer

A stand-alone instrument especially designed for recording strong ground motions was used in this study to create a large data base of peak particle velocities measured on stope hangingwalls. A total number of 58 sites located in stopes mining the Carbon Leader Reef, Ventersdorp Contact Reef, Vaal Reef and Basal Reef were monitored. The peak particle velocities were measured at the surface of the excavations to identify the effect of the free surface and the fractures surrounding the underground mining. From the monitoring results obtained, the velocity criterion of 3 m/s will bean adequate value that support systems have to sustain during a rockburst in most cases. However, PPVs in excess of this criterion were recorded, and some PVDs were damaged or irretrieveable, a consequence of which was that possible extreme events were not recorded. The data recorded on the skin of the excavations were compared to the data recorded by the mine seismic networks to determine the site response, defined as the ratio of the measured peak ground velocity to the peak ground velocity inferred from the mine seismic data. The site response measured at all mines studied was found to be 9 ±3 times on average. Values of the site response did not vary significantly with seismological parameters such as peak ground velocity, hypocentral distance and source radius.

"The major losses of PGM and base metals in the beneficiation of platinum group deposits occur during the separation of gangue from the value minerals by selective flotation. A number of studies have shown that this negative impact on flotation is due to surface passivation, caused by various ions that may originate from the external water supply or, as is likely in the majority of cases, from the oxidation of the mineral surfaces and the grinding media. The objective of the study was to investigate the effect surface passivation and inadvertent activation have on flotation and how this can be managed so as to increase the separation of pentlandite and pyroxene. The aim was to minimise the percentage pyroxene reporting to the concentrate and simultaneously maximise the pentlandite recovery. The testwork incorporates the addition of an activator (copper sulphate), a complexing agent, such as DETA (diethylenetriamine) and a dispersant (polyphosphate) at pH 6 and pH 9 in an attempt to alleviate the surface passivation of pentlandite and inadvertent activation of pyroxene. Both synthetic minerals and plant ores were studied in order to determine the effect surface passivation and inadvertent activation have on mineral surface alteration and floatability. Zeta potential determinations, microflotation, ToF-SIMS (Time of Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry) analyses, laboratory batch flotation tests and continuous flotation testwork were used as tools to study the surface alteration and/or floatability.Zeta potential determinations and ToF-SIMS analyses showed that copper adsorption is non-selective. Both pentlandite and pyroxene become copper (II)-activated in the presence of copper sulphate and subsequently, in the presence of xanthate, adsorption of the collector will occur onto copper activated mineral surfaces. Zeta potential determinations also showed an alteration of the surface charge in the presence of polyphosphate, thereby inhibiting surface passivation of sulphides by slime coatings due to surface repulsion."

Salient information on reserves, production, and consumption of fuels and energy by State is summarized in this Bureau of Mines publication. Reserve and production data are shown for each of the fossil fuels (coal, crude oil, natural gas liquids, and natural gas) and for uranium. The consumption data of each of the major consuming sectors (household-commercial, industrial, transportation, electric power, and miscellaneous) are broken down by energy source (coal, petroleum, natural gas, hydropower, and nuclear). In addition, total energy consumption in the Nation in 1973 is compared with consumption in 1972 and 1974 (preliminary data).
