"IntroductionThe SABREX Blast Modelling Program was developed jointly by the companies of the ICI Explosives Group, of which C-I-L Inc. is a member. SABREX (Scientific Approach to Breaking Rock with Explosives) is a modular computer program which incorporates new technology with a number of tested programs that have been in use world wide.SABREX predicts the performance of blasts in terms of (I) fragment size and distribution; (2) muckpile profile and face velocity; (3) grade fracture; (4) collar breakage; (5) a rupture envelope which depicts crack penetration behind and beneath blastholes; and (6) a complete cost analysis including explosives, drilling and accessory costs. The predicted blast results are displayed as dynamic colour graphics and in tabular form.SABREX uses data on the detailed geometry of the drilled and loaded pattern, detonation characteristics of the explosives and the dynamic properties of the rock to generate blast predictions. SABREX blasting calculations take into account the effects that shock and quasi-static pressures exert on the rock around the blastholes. While physical effects occur very rapidly in rock blasting, it is possible to view and model the sequence of events as discrete sections.The program can be run on a microcomputer and is currently operated by C-I-L technical service staff in Canada for the use of drilling and blasting operators.Figure I is a diagram representing the modules of the program and associated technology that is used to complement the program.Any, or all, of the modules may be used in a particular study or blast optimization. Because the BOBCAT module of the SABREX program has been described in previous papers(7.8.9), this discussion will concentrate on the newer modules: CRACK, HEAVE, RUPTURE ENVELOPE and to a limited extent, KUZ-RAM, which present a more detailed picture of the blasting process.Each of these modules is discussed in terms of the information they offer the operator in analyzing the blast. Specific examples of recent usage in Canadian mining situations are included to illustrate the ability of the model to produce practical results that can assist in optimizing actual blasting operations or solving problems that do exist."

The disposal of end-of-life electronics is an issue receiving increasing scrutiny. This paper evaluates several alternatives for recycling cathode ray tubes (CRTs) within monitors and televisions. The primary recycling options for the glass, reuse in new CRTs or as a smelter flux, are examined from economic and environmental standpoints. The economics are modeled using a cost model that includes dependencies on processing costs, transportation logistics, and incoming material composition. The environmental consequences are modeled using life cycle assessment methodologies to determine the energy embodied in each processing alternative. Results map out preferred processing alternatives across a range of technological and operational conditions. The results indicate that economic costs and environmental consequences are heavily impacted by transportation. The preferred destination of CRT glass for a recycler is highly dependent on the proximity of the consumer to the recycler, although it is generally economically advantageous for the recycler to extensively dismantle the CRTs.

This paper describes the tower foundation design and construction experience for the 345kV Youngheung marine transmission line, which has been in commercial operation in Korea since July, 2004. This transmission line was designed and constructed to meet the rapidly increasing power demands of metropolitan areas and supply stable, bulk electric power from the Yonghung thermal power plant into metropolitan areas. This transmission line passes over the west sea, Lake Sihwa and over land. In order to successfully complete this project, and to safely support the tower during severe maritime conditions, several types of tower foundation such as Pad and Chimney foundation, Pier (Cylindrical) foundation, R.C.D foundation, Jacket pile foundation and Steel pipe pile + concrete mat foundation were developed and used. As the world?s first and longest marine transmission line, the 345kV Yonghung marine transmission line operates successfully, thanks to several high-tech civil engineering technologies and KEPCO?s accumulated experience.

A new and unique logging tool, called the Borehole Televiewer (BHTV), has been developed to inspect boreholes and to evaluate formations. Even though geologists and engineers have had only about 3 years' experience with the BHTV, the thinking of many of them has been radically influenced by the fascinating and revealing "log-picture" recorded with the tool. The BHTV fills a need for a logging tool that can produce a direct and descriptive record of the physical properties of the borehole environment. Although primarily developed to evaluate fractured reservoirs, the BHTV has been used successfully to solve a variety of problems related to formation evaluation and borehole inspection. Geologists and petroleum engineers have been confounded for many years by the problems of locating and evaluating fractures. Interpretation of the usual resistivity, acoustic or radioactivity logs, as well as the analysis of cores, for evaluation of fractured reservoirs is extremely difficult and often not definitive. This is understandable since analysis of cores from fractured formations has reported variously: (a) low porosity, (b) no effective permeability, (c) lack of any matrix oil saturation and (d) oil stains on fracture planes as the only indications of potential production.14 In recent years acoustic amplitude logs have been introduced and used with varying degrees of success to locate fractures.8'9'11"13 Conventional amplitude logs at best give only qualitative answers where quantitative ones are desired. The logs reveal nothing of the orientation of the fractures. In addition to these logs, various types of cameras, television, and rubber impression packers have been used for borehole inspection. (See Appendix.) The BHTV logging tool supplies both the quantitative and the orientation answers about fractures. The borehole can be filled with any homogeneous, gas-free liquid such as fresh water, saturated brine, crude oil or drilling muds. This tool takes an "acoustic picture" of the borehole wall. The resulting log is a representation of the borehole wall as if it were split vertically and laid flat. The log is oriented with respect to magnetic north. Any physical changes in the borehole wall are seen as changes in picture intensity. In this way, fractures, deformation or pits are reflected on the log. Tool Description The fundamental parts of the BHTV are shown in Fig. 1. A piezoelectric transducer probes the borehole wall with bursts of acoustic energy. Augered, cast-in-place (ACIP) piles have been utilized in the United States for a wide range of projects since the 1950's. Due to the cast-in-place nature of the installation method (and lack of a driving criteria); however, ACIP piles have not been readily accepted by some practicing geotechnical and structural engineers. Since ACIP piles were initially developed, the installation equipment and techniques have been improved and refined and the number of experienced contractors has significantly increased. Over the past 10 to 15 years, the pile type has experienced significant growth in the United States (particularly in Florida) because engineers have become more knowledgeable and comfortable with its use. The Miami area, in particular, has experienced considerable growth in the utilization of ACIP piles primarily due to their usage on the $1 billion Miami Metrorail System project in the early 1980s. The economic advantages over other deep foundation types, coupled with some unique installation advantages, have shown that ACIP piles can be a viable foundation alternative on many projects. Even though ACIP piles have gained respect in the private sector, the pile type has generally not been readily accepted by government transportation agencies. The reluctance to readily accept this foundation type stems primarily from the quality assurance aspect of cast-in-place pile construction. Additionally, there has not been much research activity on this foundation type, technical papers, formal associations (other than the DFI), or a concerted effort to standardize the industry. This paper serves to discuss the state of practice for ACIP pile installation in the state of Florida.

Because of complex geological environments, a number of coal reserves occur in inclined or dipping coal seams in certain parts of the world. Longwall top coal caving using split-level a singleentry panel system (SSPS) has been widely used for extracting such coal seams with large thicknesses (greater than 6 m) in China because SSPS can reduce or mitigate problems of coal outbursts, gate road deformations, overturning of shields, downhill sliding of shearer and armored face conveyor (AFC), and so forth, during mining of inclined coal seams. Depth of yield is the range of yield coal from the rib of the pillar to the boundaries where yield ends. It plays a significant role in maintaining the gate pillar stability. This paper presents a study on the stability of an unconventional water-obstruction gate pillar (UWGP) formed by SSPS to prevent water inrush in mining of an inclined thick coal seam in a coal mine in China. As the shape of this pillar is non-cuboidal, nonparallelepiped, a conventional empirical or analytical method is not applicable for studying its stability.

Mine seals can he remotely constructed in underground coal mines through vertical boreholes when direct access to a fire is impossible or considered to he too dangerous. This method has great merit because the boreholes can be drilled to specific mine areas, and the seals can be positioned close to a fire zone. The technology however can be largely ineffective if the constructed seals do not provide of effective barriers to airflow or if they cannot he used to impound water and other inert materials. Unfortunately, no viable alternatives exists to sealing the entire mine to the ground surface. Full-scale remote mine seal construction research is being conducted at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Lake Lynn Laboratory (LLL). Under this effort. Howard Concrete Pumping Company and GAI Consultants Inc. have joined forces to evaluate a potentially significant improvement to the current state of the art. This paper covers the development o f novel technology or rewrote mine seal construction, the evaluation of rite materials used, the construction practice and the Fellow-up testing.

Pilot flooding is one method of evaluating a proposed secondary recovery project. However, the amount and rate of oil recovery from an unconfined pilot area is not usually the same as from an equal area in a large-scale flood. This is true because fluids are free to move across the boundary of a pilot area. The result is that some of the oil produced in a pilot flood may come from outside the designated area and some of the displaced oil may leave the pilot area completely. This paper presents the results of fluid-flow model studies on a five-spot pilot flood. Mobility ratios between 0.1 and to have been studied. The effects of changing the ratio of injection to withdrawal rates are shown. INTRODUCTION A small-scale field test, or pilot flood, is an accepted method for evaluating the applicability of a secondary recovery operation and the economic potential of that operation for a reservoir. The pilot flood is carried on in the same manner, with the same injected materials and at the same pressures as would be used were the secondary recovery program to be expanded to a larger area of the field or to the entire field. If the reservoir fluid and reservoir rock properties are the same in the pilot area as in the rest of the reservoir, the production, injection and other pertinent data associated with the pilot test will represent and measure what should be expected from a full-scale development of this secondary recovery program. There is one major exception which, unfortunately, has been overlooked by many and which has been awaiting quantitative definition. This is the sweep-out pattern the reservoir engineer must use in interpreting the pilot flood and in extrapolating it to the full-scale development. The sweep-out area in a pilot flood is not contained within the five-spot pattern. Further, there is oil flow into and/or out of the five-spot during a pilot test. Thus, production data from pilots must be interpreted with this different flow system and sweep pattern in mind. We have studied the sweep-out pattern that will exist for some conditions of operation of pilot flooding a single five-spot (four injection wells and one producer). In our study, reported here, we have assumed that the reservoir is relatively homogeneous and of uniform thickness in the pilot area. The results of this study en-able the engineer to predict the recovery, injection requirements and project life for a full-scale operation from the pilot flooding data. The effects of various injection to withdrawal-rate ratios and mobility ratios in a relatively gas-free (10 per cent pore volume or less) system are shown. Experimental Method The technique used in this study was the same as that for the X-ray shadowgraph studies of sweep-out pattern efficiencies.' The model of the pilot and surrounding area was made from a uniform packing of round-grain sand consolidated with an epoxy resin. Fig. 1 shows the relation between the model and the pilot area. New 40Ar/39Ar dates of vein and wall rock adularia from seven epithermal deposits and one porphyry copper prospect help constrain the ages of mineralisation in the Hauraki Goldfield. Vein adularia from the Paritu region yielded a single 40Ar/39Ar plateau date of 16.315 ¦ 0.066 Ma. Five 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates of three samples of vein adularia from the Opitonui deposit overlap within error to yield a preferred age of 13.149 ¦ 0.016 Ma. Two samples of vein adularia from the Night Reef at the Broken Hills deposit yield exceptionally flat 40Ar/39Ar plateaus, and all dates overlap within error to provide an age of 7.121 ¦ 0.010 Ma. Two 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates of one sample of vein adularia from the Wharekirauponga deposit overlap within error to provide an age of 6.318 ¦ 0.061 Ma. Four 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates of three samples of vein adularia from the Maratoto deposit overlap within error to provide an age of 6.411 ¦ 0.022 Ma. Two samples of adularia from altered wall rock at the Sovereign deposit yield three 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates that range from 6.547 ¦ 0.021 to 6.806 ¦ 0.028 Ma. This suggests that mineralisation formed around 6.6 Ma, but the results are complicated because the adularia contains minor illite that post-dates adularia formation. Results from the Karangahake deposit are complex. Two samples of vein adularia yield three 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates that range from 6.116 ¦ 0.116 to 6.901 ¦ 0.101 Ma, whereas one sample of wall rock adularia that contains minor late illite yields two 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates that overlap within error to provide a date of 5.734 ¦ 0.041. The range of dates indicates that more work is necessary to understand the history of mineralisation at this deposit. Two samples of vein adularia from the Tui deposit yield four 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates that overlap within error to provide an age of 5.714 ¦ 0.017 Ma. These results confirm previous work that indicates that the ages of epithermal deposits young southward in the Hauraki Goldfield. These results are also consistent with previously postulated different ages for deposits hosted in Kuaotunu Subgroup rocks in the northern goldfield (>10 Ma), and deposits hosted in Waiwawa Subgroup rocks in the southern goldfield (7.1 to 5.7 Ma).

Microaerobic biodegradation oflow-grade manganese dioxide slurry tailings was demonstrated in enrichment cultures treated with dilute molasses at 30°C and pH 5·8. Supplementary nitrogenous nutrients, yeast extract addition and pH adjustment were not required.Continuously stirred, air-limited reactors were superior to still intermittently agitated cultures, in that, at 5 per cent (w/v) MnOz tailings and 5 per cent (w/v) molasses, the yield of 0.12 g Mn++/g molasses, the rate ofleaching of 1·06 g Mn++/l/d and a recovery of Mn++ of 58 percent from MnOz were 2·8 times, 1·7 times and 1·9 times greater, respectively. The best compromise in yield (0·45 g Mn++/g molasses) and rate ofdissolution (0·73 gMn++/l/d) was at 1 per cent (w/v) molasses in a stirred reactor.Where leaching organisms were separated from sterile ore by a bacteria impermeable membrane leaching was shown to be some 20 per cent due to diffusible metabolites and 80 per cent due to a direct contact between the bacteria and the ore particle's surfaces.

IBC has developed a cost effective MRT process for the selective extraction and recovery of gold, copper, and a mixture of other base metals from mine leach cyanide solutions. This is a two-stage system in which the gold is first recovered selectively as a high purity salt. The copper is then recovered separately as a sulfate salt. The other base metals are then collected as a cyano anion concentrate. Three different SuperLig® materials are used. The first stage can be used alone on gold leach solutions where copper and other base metals are not a problem. The two or three stage system is used when the base metals build up in the leach solution, resulting in increased costs. The cyanide or cyanide/cyano anion concentrate can be recycled back to the leach solution until the build-up of other salts, etc. becomes too high, or this too can be controlled with a percentage bleed stream.

Gardner[$] THE present known petroleum reserves are limited, and unless important new fields are discovered the Nation will be dependent, in the not too distant future, upon imports or upon synthetic liquid fuels to supplement domestic petroleum supplies. As a national defense measure, it would appear desirable to develop a substitute source of liquid fuels within the borders of the country if new discoveries of petroleum should prove disappointing. Congress undoubtedly had this in mind when it passed the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act (78th Congress, approved April 5, 1944). The act directed the Bureau of Mines to construct and operate demonstration plants for producing synthetic liquid fuels from coal and oil shale, and from forestry and agricultural products. As a part of this program, the Bureau of Mines has built a demonstration plant at Anvil Points, near Rifle, Colo., for retorting the oil shale, and has developed a mine to supply the plant with oil shale. At the beginning of mining operations, the physical qualities of the oil shale, which would have a bearing upon the selection of mining methods and practices for exploiting the deposits, were largely unknown. A comprehensive mining-research program has been set up to determine the best methods and practices to follow to obtain the lowest overall practicable mining cost for producing the oil shale on a large scale. Unusually low mining costs will be necessary for shale oil to be produced commercially. Consideration now is being given to exploiting a series of flat-lying beds 70 ft thick by a room-and-pillar method of three benches with the advance heading at the top. This report is one of a series giving the results obtained in research on mining problems. INTRODUCTION The structure and physical qualities of the oil shale indicate that the 70-ft interval of the oil-shale measure can be safely mined in open stopes; studies indicate that this method would be the most economical one to use.1 As labor will be a major item of expense, the largest equipment that could be operated efficiently in the workings would be required to obtain the lowest practicable mining cost. It was therefore desirable to know the maximum safe span of unsupported rooms and the size of pillars necessary to support the overburden. This paper describes the work done at the Columbia School of Mines Barodynamic Laboratory in determining the maximum safe unsupported roof spans and the minimum safe pillar dimensions for the oil-shale mine at Rifle, Colo.

ORDINARILY age-hardening is thought of as being associated with a limited solubility of one metal in another. Much less has been written about the type of age-hardening that attends the formation of superstructures. Solid solutions generally have a disordered or random arrangement of atoms; that is to say, in a unit cell, such as that of the face-centered cubic lattice, there is no distinction between atomic sites. Atoms of a given metal may occupy cube corners or face centers. Under certain conditions, however, some alloys develop what is known as an ordered structure. In this case, cube corners would be occupied by only one type of atom and face centers by another type, Associated with this ordering process are many interesting changes in physical and electrical properties. Moreover, in many instances the alloys become susceptible to age-hardening. From the evidence now to be described, it appears that age-hardening in 14-carat gold alloys is due to the formation of both a super-structure and a precipitate. Alloys of the metals gold, silver and copper were known in antiquity. The available knowledge regarding their constitution has been ably summarized and extended by Sterner-Rainer,1 Janecke,2 Carter,3 Wise,4 and Coleman.5 Despite the long familiarity with these alloys and the numerous investigations of their properties that have been made, there is still much that remains unexplained. It has been known for a long time that the hardness of these alloys is closely related to the rate of cooling, Similar changes have been observed in the binary gold-copper system,6 one alloy of which corresponding to the formula Cu3Au, has been the subject of a careful and competent report by the English investigators, Sykes and Evans.7 They have established the fact that the shift of atoms from the ordered to the disordered condition takes place in some critical temperature range. At temperatures above the critical range the structure is random, and at temperatures below it the structure is ordered. No difference between these two structures is revealed by the microscope. Both have a face-centered cubic lattice and complete solubility, so that there is no evidence to suggest that the changes in properties are associated with a phase change, The more slowly the alloy is cooled, the higher is the degree to which the ordering process proceeds and the more marked is the increase in hardness. As experimental data were accumulated on 14-carat gold alloys, several contradictions arose. Certain observations tended to confirm the existence of a superstructure, while other observations seemed to be inconsistent with such a transformation. Water use and wastewater management is becoming a focus for many industries around Australia and the rest of the world. Good quality water is increasingly being recognised as a precious resource, and regulations on the bulk storage and discharge of waste streams is becoming more stringent in order to protect the environment, existing water reserves and the communities that use these resources. Components such as heavy metals, arsenic, cyanide, and sulfate from acid mine drainage are some that occur at mining and metallurgical processing sites. Removal of such components can allow safe re-use of these streams, reducing the new water requirements of the process, or else allowing acceptable discharge to the environment. Re-use or discharge of treated water eliminates or reduces the risk associated with storage of large volumes of contaminated water on site.Technologies where a contaminant is selectively precipitated and removed as a sludge are used for many of these treatments. Selection of the best treatment option for wastewater must depend on what is suitable to each site, and consider not only the nature of the contaminant, but also other aspects, including the location and situation of the site, local regulations, cost of reagents, the sensitivity of the local environment and waste sludge disposal options. In 1998, the Concentrator Modeling Center was established within the Coleraine Minerals Research Lab to develop models for simulation of iron ore processing plants, and to assist plant operators in improving performance of their aging plants. The short-term objective was to develop necessary models for reliable simulation using conventional techniques, while the long-term objective was set as liberation-based modeling and simulation of these plants. The short-term objective was achieved in 2002, after the development of models for magnetic separators, hydroseparators and fine screens. A project funded the US Department of Energy was carried out to demonstrate the capability in improving iron ore processing at the Mittal plant. As a result of this study, a 10% improvement in throughput at the plant was obtained, and simulation became a desired tool for plant operators. A significant step in the long-term objective was reached in 2005 with the development of a liberation model. This was followed by incorporation of models capable of processing liberation data into the software. By early 2007, the Center had the capability of performing liberation-based simulation of entire plants.

Experiments measuring the kinetics of oxidation and making visual observations of the oxidation of approximately 6 g static lead baths containing arsenic, antimony and tin were conducted in the temperature range from 500 to 600 oC. A range of repeatable behaviours were observed, notably: the formation of a coherent, solid oxide layers on pure lead and lead-tin alloys; the formation of liquid oxide droplets during the initial oxidation of lead-arsenic and lead-antimony alloys and the eventual formation of a complete oxide layer covering the entire free surface of these alloys. Thermogravimetric measurements revealed that the rate of oxygen uptake was strongly influenced by the form of oxides being generated at the melt/gas interface. Compared to the rates of oxidation of pure lead, arsenic increased the rate of oxygen uptake throughout the temperature range via the formation of liquid oxidation products. The presence of antimony resulted in a moderate increase in the rate of oxygen uptake as compared to arsenic. Tin was effective in lowering the rate of oxidation even in the presence of arsenic because the oxidation product was always a coherent layer that acted as a physical barrier to oxygen transport to the underlying alloy.
