The mine fire at Wilberg Mine in 1984 reached the surface resulting in the failure of the vertical ledge forming the roof and entrance for three main intake portals. The fallen material was covered with a concrete cap to seal the air from the mine. As the mine was recovered and ventilation pressure was placed on seals on the perimeter of the fire area, the concrete capped rubble proved ineffective. Due to the steep and rugged terrain and the inaccessibility to the portals from underground, horizontal holes were drilled into the portal entries and three seals were placed remotely. The seals in conjunction with pressure balancing the seals around the perimeter of the fire area resulted -in the control of the mine fire.

"Since the year 2000, 59 miners have lost their lives to explosions occurring in underground coal mines in the US. More accurately, those explosions were methane ignitions that propagated through the mines due to coal dust involvement; despite current explosion prevention standards. There are 4 basic strategies employed to manage the risk of coal dust explosions in many other coal mining countries around the world: removal of the coal dust, wetting of the coal dust to prevent it from becoming airborne, mixing of the coal dust with stone dust to increase the total incombustible content, and explosion activated barriers which make the entire roadway inert. However, American standards only mandate the first 3 of these 4 methods. It is possible that US coal mine safety measures could benefit from the implementation of the 4th method, the use of explosion barriers. This paper will discuss differences/similarities in barrier regulations used in other countries, as well as some potential difficulties with adapting a stone dust bag barrier system to US underground coal mines. Also, details and feedback gathered from two operating mine site trial barrier installations will be shared.INTRODUCTION Since the year 2000, 59 miners have lost their lives to explosions occurring in underground coal mines in the United States (US); 29 miners were killed at the Upper Big Branch mine in 2010, 5 at the Darby Mine No. 1 in 2006, 12 at the Sago Mine also in 2006, and 13 at the Jim Walter No. 5 Mine in 2001.[14] To be more accurate, the explosions that killed those miners were methane ignitions that propagated through the mines due to coal dust involvement.[18, 19, 20, 21] These deaths occurred despite current explosion prevention strategies, standards, and regulatory oversight. This poses the question, can more be done in the US to prevent coal dust explosions and their widespread damage. In review of current practices and regulations from several large coal mining countries, a disparity in prevention strategies arose. The main difference between the US and other countries was that the US does not encourage, mandate, or regulate the use of explosion barrier systems as an additional coal dust explosion mitigation measure. This raised many questions. First and foremost was whether or not the US coal mining industry and its miners could benefit, in terms of safety and fatality prevention, from the implementation of the explosion barrier systems that are used in other countries. Furthermore, are there significant differences between the coal mines in countries where explosion barriers are used and US coal mines, which would preclude the system from being adapted and implemented in the US? Also, what are the similarities and differences in explosion barrier systems, use, and regulations between other countries that use them?"

"Fine coal separation has been always concerned. The froth flotation is not efficient in desulfurization because of the low rate of sulfide liberation from raw coal, the natural hydrophobicity caused by sulfur concentration on the surface of sulfide, and the presence of large amounts of middling feed. An efficient centrifugal gravity separator was employed to separate for Shandong –0.5mm high sulphur coal, the partition curve of centrifugal separator was obtained with conclusion that the Ecart probable error value of the separator is 0.095, the imperfection I value is 0.128. Finally, comparing with the coal flotation using progressive release method, the result shows that the effect of the desulfurization with centrifugal gravity force field based on density difference between coal and minerals are much better than that of the floatation which operates based on the difference in surface properties. It provides a efficient technical way for fine coal separation. INTRODUCTION Coal plays the most important role in the energy consumption in China. Although natural gas, wind energy, nuclear power has made great progress in recent years, but the share of coal in the final energy consumption accounts for 70-80%, which is determined by energy storage of China. Under the requirement of environmental protection, the clean utilization of coal resources becomes more and more important, and the need has already been identified. Coal washing and processing plays an important role in the process of high-efficiency and clean utilization of coal. For the separation of fine coal, flotation is a traditional method for effective separation and has been used in large scale industrial applications in coal preparation plant. However, for the separation of difficult-to float coal, especially fine oxidized coal and low–rank coal with hydrophilic surface, flotation is usually inefficient [1-3]. Although many pretreatment methods have been adopted, including grinding, microwave pretreatment, new flotation reagents, the problem of efficient separation has not been completely resolved [4-6]. Thus, an enhanced gravity separation method using particle density difference rather than hydrophobic difference was proposed for the separation of fine coal. Many research results have proved that this is a practical and effective method of sorting. R.Q. Honaker used Falcon C10 concentrator, Knelson centrifugal separator and spiral separator to clean the fine coal with size of 600*210 µm and 210*37µm, the effects of different operating parameters on the separation index was discussed. The results show that the separation density of Falcon can reach 1.6, and the Ep value can reach 0.1-0.15. This paper revealed that for the separation of fine coal with high sulfur content or fine grained content. Falcon has high separation efficiency with low cost. Separation results present in another paper showed that the desulfurization efficiency of inorganic sulfur was better than that of flotation [7-8]."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has investigated new methods for increasing the selectivity in flotation by creating and regulating reagent concentration gradients within flotation columns at steady-state operation. Gradients were generated and traced in a water-only system with the use of fluorescent dyes, and the effects of various operating parameters on these gradients were investigated. From this investigation, it was found that both gradual and steep gradients could be generated in the froth cleaning zone, and that these gradients could be changed through the manipulation of both physical and chemical operating parameters. The application of reagent-gradient control to mineral systems could improve both flotation grade and recovery in commercial flotation operations without the use of additional flotation circuitry.

Free radicals (FRs) present in coal dust directly influence the interaction behavior between lung cells and dust particles. FRs are atoms or groups containing unpaired electrons, with strong chemical reactivity and a short lifespan. FRs which are quite persistent in natural environments, termed environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs), have recently received much attention as new environmentally hazardous substances. EPFRs present on coal dust serves as an active intermediary to catalyze reactive oxygen species (ROS) production by oxygen molecules endangering mine workers’ health. Many EPFR species may be bonded to the particle surface or trapped within the particle during coalification and can be modified with progressive size reduction through cutting at the mining face or crushing/pulverization in the plant. This study measured EPFRs for lignite, sub-bituminous, and anthracite coal dust at various sizes. We especially focused on EPFRs for submicron coal dust prepared by cryogenic methods. The outcome of this study will directly improve the free radical-dependent toxicity quantification and ultimately contribute to the size-dependent coal dust toxicity quantification.

Porphyry type copper ± molybdenum deposits typically occur in the Phanerozoic rocks and have been well documented. During the past two decades a number of porphyry type Cu ± Mo deposits which range in age from 1055 ± 35 Ma to 2970 Ma have been identified in the Precambrian rocks of Australia, Canada, China, Finland, India, Namibia and Zambia. Kalanjkhand porphyry copper deposit M. P., India which is estimated to contain 789 million tonnes averaging 0. 83 percent Cu (millhead-grade); 0.004 percent Mo; 0.2 gm/t Au; 6 gm/t Ag and a cap of 7.532 million tonnes of oxide are averaging 0.8 percent Cu. The economic potential of the expanded copper mining milling, smelting and refining complex to be built in the future at Kalanjkhand, which is the largest porphyry copper deposit discovered to date in the Precambrian rocks of the world is presented.

In contrast to the rather generalized title of this paper, the subject of discussion will deal with two specific cases of sliding in glacial lake clays in northern Michigan. The slides in question occurred on lands owned by the Upper Peninsula Power Company a short distance south of Lake Superior. Slope failure problems have plagued the Company's operations for many years. It is hoped that this paper may provide some insight into the causes and possible mechanisms of clay slides in general as well as providing details of the two slides specifically cited. LOCATION The Upper Peninsula Power Company's Victoria facilities lie in section 29, T. 50 N., R. 39 W., in Ontonagon County, Michigan. The power site is situated on the West Branch of the Ontonagon River, approximately five miles southwest of the town of Rockland and only one mile to the southeast of the old mining location of Victoria. The area lies wholly within the Precambrian Shield and it is geologically similar to adjacent parts of Wisconsin, Minn¬esota, and Ontario. (Figure 1). THE VICTORIA HYDROELECTRIC SITE The Victoria hydroelectric power facilities were constructed in 1930 on a portion of the West Branch where meanders are conspicuously developed. The generating station is actually sited on an abandoned meander at a place where valley widening has occurred. Samples of the same coal measure overburden spoil were obtained from three different mine sites. Site A used a 27-m3 tub-mounted dragline, Site S used a front-end loader and truck combination, and Site C used a 6-m3 crawler-mounted dragline. The spoils were analyzed in the laboratory for the strength parameters using drained triaxial tests conducted on 150-mm diameter specimens. Regression analysis was utilized to determine the appropriate failure criterion for the strength data from each site. Spoil obtained from Site S yielded higher shear strengths than Sites A and C.

Wheel loaders became important bulk materials handling tools in the early fifties. As they grew in stature, productivity, reliability, and acceptance, the demand for larger, more rugged machines evolved. In the early sixties, the introduction of a 6-yard model by a major equipment manufacturer led quickly to widespread experimenting and rapid worldwide acceptance in loading blasted rock in stone quarries and smaller metal mines. As the wheel loaders grew in popularity for shot rock loading, larger models, 12- to 15-yard size were developed and saw widespread use by 1970. In the past 20 years, at most quarries and small to medium size mines, most cable operated power shovels have been replaced by large wheel loaders and more recently, hydraulic excavators as the primary loading tool. Wheel loaders larger than the 15-yard class are not used widely. Until about 1970, very few overburden haulage trucks were used in domestic coal mines. About that time, many states started enforcing stringent mine relcamation regulations and in 1977, even more stringent federal legislation was passed. These controls brought about drastic changes in coal surface mining methods in the mountainous areas of Appalachia, in smaller midwestern mines and in the large mines of the western states. Basically, simple material casting methods were replaced at most eastern mines by "haul-back" and "mountain top mining" methods using controlled placement of overburden as it is removed from the coal. These methods dictated much more extensive use of loaders/ shovels and trucks to the point that most coal mining in those areas is now by loader/shovel trucks methods. And those areas have become the home of the country's largest population of large wheel loaders and trucks in the 35- to 85-ton size class with a trend to even larger trucks and shovels. To maintain equal production or provide for growth, the new methods have caused a sharp increase in machine intensity to the extent that at some mines, up to three times as many machines were required to mine a million tons of coal in the late seventies as compared to the machine needs in the sixties. Mining costs and coal prices also took a big jump in the mid-seventies, paralleling the drastic price increases in oil and other forms of energy.

Drilling with 180 to 200 PSI air pressure, instead of 100 PSI for air and/or churn drills, has decreased our primary costs by approximately one half.

The Port Radium mine of Eldorado Mining and Refining Limited, located on Great Bear Lake only a few miles from the Arctic Circle in north-western Canada, is the oldest uranium producer in Canada, The first concentrates were produced in 1933 and except for a period between 1940 and 1942 the mill has operated continuously. Although it is located in a remote area, and compared to more recent mines in other areas is a small tonnage operation, nonetheless the relatively high grade of the Port Radium ore has permitted operation to date on an economical basis. The mill process at Port Radium includes the original gravity concentration mill, and since 1952 an acid leaching plant which treats tailings from the gravity mill and tailings recovered by dredging of residues from underwater dumps in Great Bear Lake. The pregnant solution from the leach plant has to date been processed through aluminum reduction to yield an intermediate grade uranous phosphate-arsenate precipitate, Because of the rising costs of the aluminum reduction process, and its sensitivity to ore composition, Eldorado became interested in possible application to Port Radium of the solvent extraction processes of which we were obtaining increasing information in the latter part of 1954 and during 1955.

A comprehensive study of the environmental conditions of the area affected by the Colfax and Cheswick Power Stations is of extreme importance to Duquesne Light Company. The residents in the valley where the two plants are located have complained for many years about the emissions from the Colfax Plant which is of the 1920 to 1930 vintage and which has a capability of generating approxi¬mately 200 Mw. They were extremely happy to hear that the Company had plans for shutting it down, however, they were extremely unhappy to hear that we were planning to build another even larger one to take its place in the same vicinity, namely the Cheswick Plant with a capability of 570 Mw. They had visions of a plant twice the size of the Colfax Plant and belching out twice as much smoke. A few of the citizens from that area were most vehement at the public hearings that were held by the Allegheny County Air Pollution Bureau for obtaining an installation permit. With two power plants already existing in that area (Duquesne Light Company's Colfax Plant and West Penn Power's Springdale Plant), the primary concern of the Allegheny County Air Pollution Control Bureau was that the Cheswick Station might increase air pollution levels beyond what they considered to be dangerous limits. It became very evident that the Allegheny County Air Pollution Control Bureau would be extremely reluctant to grant installation and operating permits unless they were satisfied that the new plant would not increase local pollution levels and that we were taking sufficient steps to monitor the emissions from our plants and also the ambient air in the general area. We concluded that an extensive air pollution monitoring program must be conducted in the area to determine the effects of the operation of our plants. The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, performed a laboratory-scale investigation of technique for recovering silver from pregnant solutions generated in the hydrometallurgical treatment of complex base-metal sulfide concentrates with oxidizing chloride media. This provides a means for recovery and simplified reduction of accessory silver to metal from ions. The method consists of adding NaI or KI to the solution to precipitate AgI, which is then contacted with Na2S to produce Ag2S and to regenerate the iodide salt solution. Silver recoveries range from 99 pct with 20 pct excess iodide precipitant, to-92 pct when the theoretical stoichiometric amount of precipitant is employed. The Ag2S product can be reduced to silver metal by contact with aluminum chips in NaOH solution followed by purification with conventional fire refining techniques.

"A Google search on talc asbestos will yield over 500,000 hits – the reason being the growing number of civil lawsuits in this area. Historically the litigation was centered on amphibole-containing industrial talc. There was no debate these talcs contained amphiboles, but the issue was the definition of asbestos. Ultramafic hosted talcs, however, are formed in such a way as to not favor the formation of amphiboles in the talc; they can occur in the surrounding black-wall, also the serpentinite host rock is in direct contact with the talc. Thus allegations can be made non-asbestiform amphiboles or non-regulated serpentine group minerals can occur in the final products. INTRODUCTION Gunter (1994) wrote the following in regard to the question “What is asbestos? “The question yields different answers depending upon the audience. To a mineralogist, asbestos is a mineral form. To an engineer, it is an industrial material with several useful properties. To a medical doctor, it is an agent that might cause certain diseases. The third answer invokes several more issues: to a lawyer, a possible lawsuit; to a news reporter, a story; to an asbestos abatement worker, a job; and to a public school administrator or a parent, a nightmare.” The main function of that article was to try and provide background information to be taught at the college level to help students understand some of the issues associated with the use of asbestos in our modern society, and especially its use as a fireproofing agent in schools and public buildings. At that point in time one of the main issues was asbestos abatement as the mining and use of asbestos was waning as its health risks became more clearly known in the occupational setting. Now over 20 years later the current issue we are dealing with herein is “asbestos” occurring naturally in talc. This is a well know concern for those in the talc industry and they have been working on methods to ascertain if their products contained “asbestos” since last century. As such our articles will focus more on issues emerging from recent litigation, and the confusion that occurs, especially in the “asbestos” nomenclature as the mineralogist, engineers, doctors, and lawyers previously mentioned try to communicate. And lastly we need to remain cognizant of the fact that people are still dying of mesothelioma in the US. As a last resort to recoup expenses as they are dying they often respond to the TV advertisements we’ve all no doubt seen."

Manufacture and mixing of flotation reagents at the mill site provides an economic and convenient method of maintaining a continuous and fresh supply of reagents for concentrator operations. Kennecott Copper Corporation has designed and built a Reagent Mixing Facility which incorporates new ideas in construction and fail-safe operation at its Nevada Mines Division concentrator. Highly sophisticated automation and instrumentation techniques are combined with safety procedures and equipment that meet and exceed all Federal and State safety requirements. Installation of the facility has minimized hazardous working conditions for the operator, isolated reagent preparation from production personnel and equipment, and reduced the time required for reagent preparation from three shifts to one shift per day.

Test work conducted in the 6.4 and 10.52 m Aerofall Mills at the Iron Ore Company of Canada Carol Project showed that the conventionally used ?deflector?-type liners which form the basic principle of Aerofall Mill grinding did not necessarily provide the best grinding performance. A new design, using low profile liners incorporating radial ribs of a proper height, actually improved the mill throughput in the order of 9 to 20% without sacrificing grinding efficiency. In addition, the new design reduced liner weight and scrap losses, which resulted in a reduction of liner consumption by 25%. It provided better protection to the mill shell and reduced the overall maintenance cost for the mill

The purpose of this paper is to outline briefly some basic principles of ground-water hydrology that have application in mine hydrology and to suggest that an understanding of these principles can help to forestall problems that are internal as regards mining operations and external as regards damage or harm to surrounding areas. The development of a mine below the water table pleads for accurate values to answers of hydrologic problems. Such internal problems involve both an inflow of water without adequate drainage facilities and a deficiency of water for the required mining or milling use. Methods which give acceptable quantitative values for the solution of many ground-water problems depend on rather simple geologic structures, characterized chiefly by homogeneous rocks of considerable areal extent. Unfortunately, mining operations are likely to be centered where rocks are not homogeneous. Consequently, methods that attempt to show values of the storage and transmitting capacity of rocks in mining areas must be applied with caution. In spite of complex geology and apparent uniqueness of individual mines and quarries, adherence to some concepts of ground-water occurrence and movement should be helpful to mine operators. Mining operations that extend below the water table disturb the natural hydrologic regimen. Prior to development, the water table slopes away from the site of a mine in at least one direction, but as soon as development begins and water is removed from the mine, the mine becomes the apex of a depressed cone in the water table, causing a convergence in the flow of water toward the mine, The behavior of the cone of depression, as it tends to deepen and to increase in areal extent when the mine is deepened, is related to the rate of withdrawal of water necessary to keep the mine dry. The significance and nature of the cone of depression in the vicinity of pumped wells has been studied by ground-water hydrologists for years, but the cone caused by pumping water from mines has generally been less systematically appraised. Open-pit mining is sometimes conducted in areas where the artesian pressures contained in aquifers underlying the pit's floor are great enough to cause floor heave. In order to reduce this pressure several methods are commonly used. One of these methods is a pressure relief well or depressurization wick. The wick consists of a borehole which is filled with gravel and cased at the surface. The wick is allowed to flow freely, thus reducing pressure near its location. The spacing and depth of these wicks can be determined by a simple analytical and graphical technique which considers the weight of material overlying the aquifer and the artesian force within the aquifer. An example of the technique using data from a Colombian coal mine is presented.

Most iron bearing ores treated by the R=N Direct Reduction Process yield products lower in phosphorus than the initial ores. The sulfur is also removed and generally is in the range of 0.02 to 0.05 percent in the final R=N product, independent of the sulfur content of both the ore and carbon fuel used. The mechanism and thermodynamic justification of the principal reactions leading to the removal of both phosphorus and sulfur and the control of sulfur in the iron concentrate produced are discussed and supported by the results of laboratory experiments. In substantially all iron ores (containing up to 4% sulfur as sulfate) and solid carbon fuels (containing sulfur from 1 to 8%) tested, the rejection of sulfur has been in the order of 90-95%, with not more than 0.02 0.05% sulfur in the final metallic iron product. With respect to phosphorus-bearing iron ores ranging up to 0.70% P205, the rejection to tailings has been in the order of 70-95%, resulting in not more than 0.03 - 0.07% phosphorus in the final product.
