The metallurgy of tin smelting In a submerged arc furnace By H. A. UYS, Ing. Metallurgy (Pretoria) (Visitor) The control of tin smelting demands a knowledge of slag characteristics and of the equilibrium reaction that governs the process. These factors are explained by reference to the tin-smelting operation at Iscor, Vanderbijlpark. In the primary cycle, it is important to obtain the highest possible FeO content in the slag. In the secondary cycle, a primary slag high in FeO gives a hardhead (iron-tin alloy) high in iron, which is essential if a high ratio of FeO to SnO is to be obtained in the secondary slag. This determines the economy of the smelting operation: the iron that is introduced into the system from the ore concentrate must go out in the secondary slag. Additions of lime are necessary in the secondary cycle but must be limited if the volume of slag is to be kept Iow.

Austempered ductile iron (ADI) is a ductile iron which has had its matrix toughened by an austempering process. The alloy exhibits remarkable properties, which it owes to a unique microstructure comprising graphite nodules embedded in a matrix of acicular ferrite and carbon-enriched austenite. The properties include high strength combined with high toughness and ductility. Excellent wear resistance is also exhibited because, under strain, the austenite is transformed locally to martensite. Samples of ductile iron were austempered to produce grades I and IV AD!, and were tested at various strain rates. The grade IV ADI exhibited higher strengths and lower difficulties, and the strengths were found to be more dependent on strain rate. Transformation to martensite was more prevalent at the lower strain rates. A mechanism of increased flow stress and work hardening in the austenite of the matrix is proposed to explain the higher strength of the samples at high strain rates, where significantly less martensite is formed in the matrix.

This paper describes a study of the destination of the mercury that is present in the ore during the recovery of gold. It was found that over 96 per cent of the mercury passed through the process untouched. A small amount finds its way into cyanide solution, and is concentrated with gold in Zinc dust as Merrill precipitate. When the precipitate is calcined, the mercury is driven off and finds its way into the atmosphere. However, dilution of the stack gas in the atmosphere appears to be sufficient to prevent hazardous concentrations arising at ground level. No other significant concentrations of mercury were found at any stage of the process. The amount of mercury lost to the atmosphere by this mechanism appears to be less than 200 kg per year throughout the gold-mining industry in South Africa. Virtually no mercury vapour could be detected in the air in the smelt-house. Slight increases in mercury concentrations above background level were observed in soils around the reduction plants and in the discharge or return waters, but no environmental stress is anticipated from these increases.

Surface Plasmon Resonance spectroscopy (SPR), combined with cyclovoltammetry, has been successfully used to study the interactions between ethyl xanthate, heptyl xanthate, dithiophosphate and propyl trithiocarbonate flotation collectors and a gold surface. Large, easily measurable responses have been obtained in the potential areas where the thiol collectors are known to interact with gold. The four collector types lead to differing SPR maximum values, with longer alkyl chains resulting in higher SPR responses, and the trithiocarbonate leading to the highest response values. The SPR responses differ considerably from the current density response at very anodic and cathodic potentials. There are indications that thiols might still be adsorbed at potentials as low as -300 mV (vs SHE). A mineralogical investigation of the main causes of refractoriness of some metalurgicaly complex gold ores in South Africa is reported. It is shown that this refractoriness is related to the presence of submicroscopic gold, carbonaceous material, pyrhotite, and base-metal sulphides. Gold ores can be classified according to their content of these components. Electron-microprobe analysis shows that gold occurs in arsenopyrite and pyrite, the gold contents of which can be up to 2700 gft. The gold and arsenic contents of these minerals are closely corelated. Furthermore, within zoned arsenopyrite grains, the concentration of gold closely folows that of arsenic. Mossbauer spectroscopy caried out on samples of concentrate from the Barberton area indicates that the submicroscopic gold within the sulphides is in a non-metalic form. The mineralogical examination of beneficiation products is important, since it sheds light on some fundamental aspects of the behaviour of the ore and gangue components during milling and flotation. Such basic information will lead ultimately to a better understanding of the problems in the beneficiation of these ores. Investigations have shown that the overmiling of the auriferous arsenopyrite and the disseminated nature of the sulphide mineralization are the main problems during beneficiation.

The transport of tailings composites provided by different sources is a field of study where a limited amount of research has been conducted. Nevertheless, such systems are important sources of operational difficulties, especially in the case of high clay content tailings. The case presented in the present paper consists of a free surface flow pipeline transporting a composite of two different tailings with high clay content. It has presented operational difficulties such as partial blockages and upstream box and air intake overtopping events. In the present paper, the causes of these difficulties are identified. These include lack of complete mixing of the different tailings, multi-layered flow with low velocity and high yield values with high frictional losses. The pipeline characteristics and performance are analysed in three stages: design, initial operation and enhanced operation, the latter accomplished by means of increasing turbulence in the box located upstream from the pipeline. The last section of the pipeline and another distribution pipeline system located downstream from the pipeline have performed well. The cause of different behaviour of both systems is also assessed.

In 1980 The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy instituted the Brigadier Stokes Memorial Award to commemorate the outstanding contribution to the South African mining industry made by Brigadier R.S.G. Stokes, who was an Honorary Life Fellow and a Past President of the Institute.

The Institute's ninetieth anniversary was celebrated in grand style with a banquet and dance in the ballroom of the Carlton Hotel in Johannesburg, on 22nd March. Some six hundred and thirty members and guests filled the room to capacity, and many remained to enjoy the festivities until well past midnight.

K. Loveday obtained a degree in Chemical Engineering at the University of Natal, where he also obtained a Ph.D. in the kinetics of froth flotation.

The International Colloquium on Developments in Froth Flotation, which replaced the Annual University of Cape Town (UCT)/University of Stelenbosch (US) Minerals Processing Symposium, was held at the Van Riebeeck Hotel in Gordon's Bay on 3rd and 4th August, 1989. The Colloquium attracted 150 delegates from the mining, metallurgical, and chemical industries, including 9 from overseas.
