Among different pre-treatment methods, a high voltage electric pulse was recently developed and is gaining popularity due to multi-benefits such as pre-weakening along the grain boundaries, as well as size reduction to improve the liberation characteristics. In this paper, the pre-treatment using high voltage electric pulse of lithium-bearing granite ore was studied to understand the morphology through texture, as well as the friability of the particles. To understand the phenomena, SELFRAG, a laboratory facility used for generating high voltage electric pulse and key operating variables were varied. The role of applied voltage (94.5-195.5 kV), number pulse (3-87), and the frequency of pulse (1.3-4.7 Hz) was varied to understand the liberation characteristics as well as energy consumption. Characterisation tools such as optical, and electron microscopy were used to describe the pre-weakening phenomena through textural features. Further, the energy required to break the particle to finer sizes as well as friability were determined and described. In pyrometallurgical processes, metal oxides are reduced from molten slag through carbothermic reduction. It is of interest to evaluate the reactivity of the carbonaceous materials towards substances such as slag. Characterization techniques such as coal petrography can provide insight into the influence of feed coal properties and how they potentially dictate reductant performance. This study aimed to compare the petrographically determined organic composition of coal to reductant reactivity. Two South African medium-rank C bituminous coals and one anthracite sample were investigated together with high-carbon ferromanganese industrial slag. The reductant reactivity tests were conducted at 1500°C in a muffle furnace to assess the potential of carbonaceous reductant in reacting with the main slag components. SEM-EDS was applied to understand the extent of MnO (and to a lesser extent, SiO2) reduction from the slag. Coal 2, consisting of a greater proportion of vitrinite (59.5 vol% on a mineral matter-free basis and 54.7 vol% including mineral matter) was the most reactive reductant. The anthracite sample, with the highest inert maceral proportions (71.8 vol% including mineral matter and 76.8 vol% on a mineral matter-free basis), was the least reactive reductant.

Dr H. J. van Eck (Honorary Life Member): "Mr President, I regard it as a signal honour that I was invited to address the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy on its 75th Anniversary. I also wish to add my congratulations and good wishes to the many you have already received on this memorable occasion. Seventy-five years is indeed a good age and the achievements of your Institute certainly justify this special celebration. South Africa owes her present prosperity largely to the technological ability and determination of her own people. Members of the Institute contributed in large measure to this great development of our country and through the years have upheld their high reputation for scientific integrity, dynamic enterprise and dedicated service. It was their knowledge which provided the key to unlocking the mineral wealth which lay dormant for countless ages. The history of world mining dates back many centuries. We know of the mercury mines of Spain, the tin mines of Cornwall and the zinc mines of Poland, but it was not until colonization of the western hemisphere started in about 1500 that mining of any consequence began in North America. It is true that the peoples of South America and Mexico had accumulated wealth out of gold and silver, but industrialized mining was not a feature of these agrarian cultures. The mining wealth that eventually developed in North America was based on advances in the technology of processing minerals and served as an incentive to people in other new countries. Big mines were opened elsewhere in the world. From Canada, Mexico, Venezuela, Brazil, Peru, Chile, Bolivia, Rhodesia, Australia, Burma and India, to name but a few, there has been a steadily increasing production of an expanding range of minerals and metals. By the middle of the 20th century the trend was to increase the production and use of such comparatively uncommon metals as cobalt, nickel, titanium, and others, and a great mining rush started to search for, and develop, the deposits of uranium, and related radio-active minerals. It is worth pausing a few minutes to reflect that most of early mining was based on the recovery of virgin metals like gold and silver or easily treated high grade ores of copper, tin and zinc. Today, much of this type of mining would be regarded as picking the eyes out of the mine. With the development of improved ore separating, ore concentration and recovery processes, we developed into bulk mining and bulk treatment and in South Africa we have some very big mines, also outside the gold mining industry at Phalaborwa, for instance. Mining techniques are applied which compare with the best in the world. These large mines could only develop because of the perfection of new concentrating techniques and, of course, because of the development of markets. We have mentioned nickel and cobalt. These names were given to those mischievous mining sprites called nickels and kobolds to whom the suspicious miners ascribed their inability to smelt copper from copper nickel or arsenious copper ores. In South Africa, the presence of minerals was known to the modern Western world as far back as 1497 when Vasco da Gama found the native 'strandlopers' at the St. Helena Bay wearing copper rings. In 1669, after the British East India Company had formed their settlement, they employed miners and assayers in prospecting for minerals and in 1685 found traces of copper in the copper mountain of Namaqualand where some 170 years later a rich deposit of copper was to be opened up. Samples (15 to 20 g) of pre-calcined Mamatwan manganese ore or pure Mn 304 smaller than 48 mesh were reacted at temperatures in the range 1000 to 1300°C with samples of spectrographically pure graphite smaller than 325 mesh. Samples (1 g) of ore or pure Mn02 smaller than 48 mesh were reacted at temperatures of 1000 and 1200°C with pure graphite fines in argon, with graphite in carbon, .'1onoxide, and with carbon monoxide alone. In each case, the loss of mass as a function of time was recorded with a hermobalance. The rate and degree of reduction were found to increase with additions of carbon and with increasing temperature up to 1300oC, when they reached their maximum. The shape of the reduction curves, together with the results obtained from examination of the products of reaction by microscopy and X-ray diffraction, were used as the basis for a postulated reduction mechanism. Some details are given of an initial kinetic model that was used to verify the proposed mechanism. It was found that the reduction of Mamatwan ore by graphite at temperatures in the range 1000 to 1300°C occurs in two stages: (i) an initial stage during which the higher oxides of manganese are rapidly reduced to MnO with concurrent formation of CaMn2O4 and (ii) a longer stage during which CaMn2O4 and MnO are reduced to carbides by carbon dissolved in the ferromanganese phase.

A new Scramble has hit the African continent. This Scramble has many drivers: the 1978 Deng Xiao Ping liberalizations in China; the 1989 collapse of the Soviet empire; the ICT revolution; the ease of global communications. The underlying dynamic is the end of the bipolar world of the Cold War and its replacement with multipolarity. According to HSBC (2011), in 2050 China will be the world?s largest economy, with India number 3 and Brazil number 7. Russia will be 15th (below its old rival, Turkey). South Africa maybe ranked 30th, yet has been invited to join the exclusive (BRIC) club. One has to ask, why? It is sad to note how low South Africa is assessed to be?currently it is around number 24 in the world; the reason for the fall is that the HSBC model includes population growth, and it is in this domain that South Africa is a loser, being constrained by the impact of HIV/AIDS on its life expectancy. The original four BRIC nations include the factory of the world (China), the garden of the world (Brazil), the gas station of the world (Russia), and the back office of the world (India). South Africa comes to the club both as jeweller of the world and as gatekeeper. China, Brazil, and Russia all have considerable expertise in mining exploration, extraction, and processing.

The comminution at grain size level for the liberation of valuable minerals usually requires the highest size-specific energy. Therefore, the full understanding of the comminution process at this level is essential. Models based on the Discrete Element Method (DEM) could be a helpful tool for this purpose. In those, the mineral microstructure, which has a dominant influence on the fracture behaviour, can be described in great detail. One major concern, however, is the missing representativeness of simulated models. In this study, a method to overcome this limitation is presented. The authors show how a realistic microstructure can be implemented into a particle bed comminution simulation using a two-dimensional Bonded Particle Model (BPM). The improved algorithm based modelling approach is exemplarily compared to an equivalent real experiment. Thereby, the focus is set on the analysis of the interfacial breakage and the capability of the simulation to reproduce the experimental results. The comparison of the results shows that simulations at grain size level allow a more detailed evaluation of the fracturing behaviour. This is of special interest as the aim of comminution in mineral processing is not only the size reduction of coarse particles, but an efficient liberation of the valuable components. Hence, simulations with automatically generated real mineral microstructures will help to further improve the efficiency of ore processing. Electrokinetic dewatering of kimberlite slime under constant direct curents of 0,5 to 2 A and dewatering under constant applied potentia Is of 16,5 to 46,5 V are considered. The combined efects of electrophoresis and the addition of 8,3 x 10-3 M Mg2+ ions on the one hand, and 1 to 10 p.p.m. of the anionic polyacrylamide flocculant Praestol 2935 on the other, were investigated in a 3-litre Perspex electrophoretic cel. .The electro-osmotic dewatering experiments were conducted in a 3-litre Perspex electro-osmotic cel at various electrode spacings, as well as with a moving anode (top electrode). During electrophoretic dewatering, the zeta potential of the kimberlite particles did not change significantly, whereas the pH and temperature showed marked increases with time. The addition of Praestol 2935 enhanced the setling of the sludge bed owing to the additional effect of flocculation. The addition of electrolyte Mg (CIO4)2 retarded the separation process, partly as a result of gel formation in the slurry. During the electro-osmotic experiments, the rate of dewatering was found to be approximately proportional to the applied constant direct current, and to be independent of the electrode spacing. In general, electro-osmotic dewatering seemed to be more energy-efficient than electrophoretic dewatering.

The analysis of angular atypicality of lineaments as an aid to mineral exploration by J. P. G. PRETORI USc, M.Sc. (Pret.) (Visitor) and T. C. PARTRIDGE, Ph.D. (Natal) (Visitor) In an exploration project, data pertaining to 84000 lineaments in an area of 25 000 km2 were recorded. The total length of lineaments in intervals of one degree was determined. Angular intervals with Iow length densities were regarded as atypical. The proportion (by length) of lineaments with such atypical orientation was calculated for 5 km X 5 km grid squares. This index of angular atypicality was contoured and, used in conjunction with conventional photogeological techniques, contributed in a large measure to the success of the investigation.

THAIN* Pre-European gold mining and working in South Africa is a tantalizing field for conjecture. Well over thousand sites have been identified in Rhodesia, but here we have had to reach double figures, judging by published accounts. Geologically, the Transvaal is less amenable primitive exploitation, but it difficult to reject the idea that the knowledge gained to the north did not have its influence south of the Limpopo.

The effect of a sulfite reagent on the floatability of chalcopyrite and enargite was investigated in this paper. The flotation tests using single and mixed minerals were performed under various concentrations of sulfite. The flotation tests using a single mineral showed that the sulfite reagent depressed the natural floatability of both minerals at pH 9. Surprisingly, enargite was floated after the addition of potassium amyl xanthate (PAX) following the sulfite treatment, and the floatability of chalcopyrite depressed under a similar condition. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis results showed that the sulfate species increased after the sulfite treatment on both minerals. However, the addition of PAX removed this sulfate species and rendered the enargite surface hydrophobic. This phenomenon was not observed on the chalcopyrite surface. FTIR analysis and PAX adsorption studies were performed to support this finding. The flotation of a mixed mineral was in agreement with the flotation of a single mineral, indicating a possibility for selective flotation of chalcopyrite and enargite using the proposed method. Contributions to discussion V. E. Marting (Associate Member): The authors of this paper should be congratulated in having pioneered the application of the Sharapov predictor to local data, and in having made a valuable contribution to South African experience in the quantitative treatment of geological information using a digital computer. Although the existing set of three programmes has been described as a 'suite' it does not represent an integrated system in the accepted sense since the communication between runs is made in the form of punched card files to enable the mining engineer to exercise discretion and control over the data entered at each phase. Although the authors are justifiably proud of the successful results obtained through the application of this method, I feel that it is my duty to comment that the computer aspect of the work has not reached full development and is deserving of the financial support needed to increase its widest usefulness. At the present moment a routine to detect 'missing information' has not been commissioned. Due to the lack of documentation the use of the programmes is restricted since the format for the submission of data is known only to the authors. It is very unlikely that a profitable return on the development costs will be enjoyed before the programme is fully documented and made available to wider use. My criticism of the present incomplete state of the work is being voiced purely with the intent of focussing on the significance of this project and the fact that it is deserving of development on an industry basis. It should be noted that at the economical cost of R4.00 per sq ft of computer print-out, a mining engineer can hardly afford to miss the opportunity of using the programmes on other (e.g. metalliferous) mineral deposits of tabular formation. Since the publication of this paper I have had an opportunity to see the results of the programmes developed by Drs M. D. G. Salamon and F. Deist for designing bord and pillar workings. The basic data for these latter programmes are extracted from iso-line plans drawn conventionally by geologists, a task that could be considerably expedited through the use of Mr Hawkins' programmes. It appears that the efforts of these respective teams are complementary and it is in the interests of the industry that these individual components should eventually form part of an integrated system. E. Margo* (Member): This paper is a good example of how and where the backroom scientist-in this case the mathematical statistician-can aid the mining engineer to develop not only more accurate means for dealing with valuation problems but to develop a tool that can also cope with changed geological specifications.

JournelIn his presentation Mr Wiik said that unrolling could be regarded as a reversal of the natural process of folding, so that the aim of an unrolling procedure would be the reconstruction of original pre-tectonic conditions. While simply formulated, this aim might not always be achieved. The geometrical relationship between points on the deformed surface and corresponding points on the original surface is process-dependent, and a true reconstruction could be achieved only if the deformation history were known in detail.In this computer unrolling procedure all these complexities were ignored. Referring to one particular marker horizon, Mr Wiik said that it was assumed in the procedure that this marker was deposited as a horizontal stratum and that it had subsequently been deformed by simple flexure-type folding.The procedure allowed the geologist to incorporate his knowledge and conception of the deposit through repeated re-contouring with dummy points. This 'manumatic' aspect of the procedure had proved invaluable, not only in resolving specific unrolling problems but also in making the system more acceptable to the geologists in general.Unrolling served towards removing what might be termed `tectonic noise' superimposed on the primary distribution patterns for regionalized variables such as metal content and orebody thickness. From this point of view, variograms derived on the basis of unrolled-plan co-ordinates should be more meaningful in terms of depositional environment than are variograms calculated from a normal map projection.Mr M. M. Oosterveld remarked that it appeared from the paper that there were problems in applying the unrolling technique to ore reserve calculation, and asked whether there were not other methods that might be used for that purpose.Mr Wiik replied that at present unrolling played only a minor role in practical ore reserve estimation within Roan Consolidated Mines, Limited. The techniques currently in use differed from one orebody to another, but in general they involved projection onto a vertical longitudinal section or a horizontal plan, with subsequent grid interpolation by means of a standard computer contouring package."

The output of palladium in the U.S.S.R. greatly exceeds the internal usage. The primary purpose of this 200 page volume is therefore to record details of fundamental researches on the properties of this metal with a view to expanding its marketability. Theoretical studies have revealed a number of alloys with great promise in electrical instruments and for the chemical industry. The success of these researches in the U.S.S.R. and in the U.S.A., resulted in the industrial usage of palladium exceeding that of platinum in 1957 and increasing its lead during the next decade. This volume is divided into three parts. Section I covers the mineralogy, extraction and the physical metallurgy of the metal. It records a considerable area where the resistance to corrosion of palladium equals that of platinum. Section II deals with the preparation and the properties of palladium in alloys and contains a comprehensive metallographic treatment of the many binary alloy systems. Section III is devoted to industrial applications. The 460 references which are quoted are mainly from the U.S.S.R. but otherwise have a world-wide coverage. H.B.

High-temperature phase relations in the Pb-PbS system were established by the quenching of samples equilibrated in evacuated and sealed silica capsules. The liquid-miscibility gap seen in some previously published phase diagrams was not observed. The thermodynamic activities of PbS in liquid solutions of this system were derived at 1473 K from the isopiestic equilibration of samples belonging to this solution series with Cu2S-PbS melts of known PbS activities. The behaviour of Pb-PbS melts was found to be compatible with a subregular solution model. This model also made it possible to obtain an analytical liquidus for PbS that was in excelent agreement with the experimental determination.

This paper discusses pilot and laboratory-scale metallurgical test work conducted on bulk samples from a low grade heavy mineral deposit and provides an overview of basic practical metallurgical techniques applied to ascertain the suitability of existing production plants to process material from this orebody. Previous investigations have shown this specific orebody to be more challenging in terms of mineral beneficiation as it has a high gangue mineral content. Test work was conducted on targeted stratigraphic units based on lithology and assay results to enable identification of the stratigraphic units portraying quality issues. Unit specific metallurgical pilot work has never been conducted on any of the RBM orebodies and is a new field currently being explored. During this investigation focus was placed on potential quality and yield issues for ilmenite product, with particular reference to CaO quality. A basic evaluation of zircon and rutile separability was also conducted. The test work was conducted using a comparative baseline methodology with metallurgical test work methods specifically aiming at mimicking the existing production plant as closely as possible. This enabled not only the likely metallurgical performance to be assessed but also indicated whether current plant design would be suitable to process the low grade ore types into products of acceptable quality at acceptable yields. The methods and findings discussed in this paper indicate that although there is considerable variation between different units, a blended feed can be successfully processed. With unit specific metallurgical data applied to the existing geological block model, expected yields and recoveries using current plant designs could be predicted.

I have read with interest all the papers dealing with heat transfer and the setting of heat stress limits that have appeared during the past two decades. Scientifically speaking, most of them can be rated as being of a high standard, and some of them have been acclaimed internationally as masterpieces of logical and calculated reasoning. Weathering of ore minerals A short course on 'The Weathering of Ore Minerals and the Textural Evaluation of Base Metal Gossans' is to be given by Dr I.M. Reynolds in Grahamstown from 4th to 6th October, 1982.

Bougainville Copper Limited (BCL) operates a 50 Mtpy copper/gold/silver mine and concentrator on Bougainville Island, Papua New Guinea. BCL has installed an in-house developed data logging and supervisory process control system using a DEC PDP 11/73 mini-computer in the mill and has recently installed a similar system in the crushing plant. Together with the central DEC VAX 11/780 computer, they form part of a high speed, fibre optic, local area network in the concentrator. The in-house developed software, known as BIAS (Bougainville Copper Information and Automation System), was developed as a low cost option to interface to a number of different existing plant input/output systems while providing the capability to make maximum use of computer networking facilities. The package includes the more usual control system colour displays and data logging features, but also makes provision for two novel features: (a) Any user connected to the computer network can access the system displays. This allows metallurgists and management to monitor (but not control) plant operation from their offices. (b) Specialized application programs for performing advisory and supervisory control, dynamic simulation, and data analysis are easily incorporated into the system. The mill process system currently runs rougher/scavenger flotation stabilizing control and general data logging. The crushing plant system currently performs data logging only; however it will soon be augmented with the facility to run dynamic crushing plant simulations. Future developments will concentrate on making greater use of the detailed information available from the mine's fully automatic truck dispatch system which runs on a VAX 11/780 computer. Milling process control will be expanded to examine possible economic control of the operation of regrind and cleaner flotation circuits. An advisory water management system to optimize water supply within powerhouse generating capacity constraint will also be investigated.

"The sizing, designing, and costing of copper electrowinning circuits requires an in-depth understanding of the fundamental relationships between circuit parameters and the practical operation requirements. The aim of this investigation was to optimize total copper electrowinning project cost by mapping the operating limits of key mechanical equipment. The model was compiled by mapping various cellhouse layouts in terms of number of cathodes per cell, crane productivity, stripping machine productivity, and rectifier–transformer (rectiformer) sizing using data tables for sensitivity analysis. These parameters were then collated and evaluated on a cost by size basis. The model provides an optimum band of operation for cellhouse productivity and project capital cost for a typical range of production throughputs, from 10 kt/a to 200 kt/a cathode copper. The information may be used as a high-level selection guide to assist with identifying a costeffective copper electrowinning circuit design for a specific production rate. The data was validated and compared with existing copper electrowinning cellhouses around the world that typically install no more than 84 cathodes per cell. Based on this premise, Kafumbila (2017) suggested that there are unanswered questions, such as ‘why are the numbers of cathodes per cell different for copper production rates of 20 kt/a and 40 kt/a?’In this paper, data tables are employed to map the operating limits and costs of key Cu EW equipment. In this paper the authors describe the developed algorithms of short- and medium-term planning of underground mining operations. The algorithms were developed using the example of the flat-back cut-and-fill method, and provide multifactor accounting of mining conditions, technical and technological limitations: state and properties of the rock mass; the current mining situation; mining rules; availability of safety pillars; properties of the filling; additional characteristics of technological objects that complicate the driving of workings; sufficiency of human and technical resources; employee specialisation; existing machinery and equipment; opportunities and limitations of the transport scheme of the mine, and work schedule. The paper is presented by means of a dynamic model of mining development, which shows the sequence of mining operations in the mine workings. Besides animation, the tool provides an opportunity to form tabular and graphical reports.

Weakening rocks by taking advantage of microwave-induced microcracks is a promising solution for comminution processes. This paper investigates the effects of microwave treatment of the rock/or samples in single and multi-mode cavities. Based on the experimental results of using a 2.45 GHz microwave generator, the performance of different cavity setups and their impact on the energy effectiveness of the microwave irradiation was examined. Physical interpretations were drawn from multiple experiments with a relatively wide range of power rates and exposure times. Both basalt and kimberlite samples were used in experiments, and their results were systematically compared. For single-mode cavity tests, a microwave applicator waveguide antenna was placed at different distances from the samples to evaluate the effects of sample positioning on microwave heating, both numerically and experimentally. Eventually, cavity performance was assessed by using calorimetric test results, and strength decay was documented based on the spallation of the samples. It was found that the singlemode cavity setup has unique properties that can significantly improve the electromagnetic heating and therefore, strength degradation process.
