[The Bureau of Mines has measured the low-temperature heat capacities and high-temperature enthalpies of crystalline K2Si2O5 as part of a program for advancing mineral resources technology with energy economy. High-temperature enthalpies of glassy and liquid K2Si2O5 and crystalline K2SiO3 were also mea¬sured. An adiabatic calorimeter operating over the range 5 to 308 K was used for the heat capacity measurements for K2Si2O5 from which the standard entropy at 298.15 K, S°298 = 45.55 ±0.05 cal/deg-mole, was calculated. Tabulated values of Cp°, S°, -(G° -HO°)/T, and H°-HO° from 5 to 300 K are given for K2Si2O5. A copper-block drop calorimeter was used in the enthalpy measurements, operating from 298.15 to 1,198 K for K2SiO3 and from 298.15 to 1,453.8 K for K2Si2O5. No transitions were found for K2SiO3. The KI2Si2O5 showed two reversible first order transitions, one at 510 K with a heat of transition of 0.29 kcal/mole and one at 867 K with a heat of transition of 0.38 kcal/mole. The heat of fusion for K2Si2O5 20 5 was calculated to be 8.42 kcal/mole. Relative enthalpies are given in equation form, and high-temperature values are tabulated for Cp°, S°, - (G°-H°298 )/T, and H°-H°298 . Also tabulated are ?H°, ?G°, and log K for formation of K2SiO3 and K2Si2O5 from both the elements and the oxides.]

Thermodynamic calculations for antimony and its compounds have been hampered by the lack of adequate basic thermal data; much work rains even to fill the more important gaps. This paper supplies heat and free energy of formation values at 298.15° K, for the sesquioxide and tetroxide, based upon new measurements conducted by the Bureau of Mines. The heats of formation were obtained by combustion (bomb) calorimetry, and the free energies of formation were obtained by combination of heat and entropy data. The new values are believed to substantially improve the accuracy of thermodynsunic considerations involving these oxides.

D.2 Principal Types of Coating A Sodium Silicate Sodium silicate is a good fire retarder when freshly applied, but it loses its effectiveness if the relative humidity is at all high, thus exposure to a relative humidity exceeding 65 percent causes a serious decrease in the effectiveness after only one month. In fire, sodium silicate swells to a frothy mass (intumescence) which hardens and insulates the wood against heat. This property is destroyed by exposure to moisture. Manufacturers of many of the proprietary paints containing silicates state that their products have overcome this difficulty The reagent may be applied alone, or, better, in a mixture with lime-water and common salt, or with inert fillers such as kaolin or asbestos. B Ammonium Phosphate Strong solutions (25 to 35 percent) of monammonium phosphate or diammonium phosphate give good protection. Two or three coats of hot solution should be applied either with a large flat brush or an ordinary paint spray gun The solution should be applied as hot as possible, as this improved penetration, and it should be the aim of the operator to apply 4 lbs of reagent, i e , one gallon of 33 percent solution to every 100 square feet of surface

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) classifies hearing loss as a separate illness category. Hearing loss accounted for 11% of all illnesses in 2005 (U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2006a). According to occupational data for coal mining provided by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) from 2000 to 2005, operators that exceeded 100% noise dosage were from only seven types of machines: auger miners, bulldozers, continuous mining machines, front end loaders, roof bolters, shuttle cars (electric) and trucks (Title 30 CFR Part 62, 2000-2005). Roof bolting machine operators rank second among all underground machine operators that exceed 100% noise dose. Significant portions of the present Federal regulations for certification of closed-circuit breathing apparatus (42 CFR 84) are not quantitative. The human-subject testing portion of the regulations specifies activities rather than metabolic work rates; however, heavy human subjects have higher oxygen consumption, CO2 production, and ventilation rates than lighter human subjects performing the same activities. This means that apparatus certified using different human subjects have effectively passed different tests. In addition, apparatus performance is monitored only during selected intervals of testing, and always during rest, rather than during the entire performance period. Further, testing is arbitrarily terminated at specific rated durations, leaving unknown the performance during the remaining duration. Duration itself is misleading to users who believe that the apparatus will last a certain time no matter how much they weigh or how hard they work. The actual duration obtained from an apparatus, however, is highly variable, being inversely proportional to the work rate at which it is used. In this report, recommendations are made to (1) replace the present regulations for certification of closed-circuit breathing apparatus with quantitative tests specifying metabolic work rate rather than activity,(2) continuously monitor relevant physiological stressors, (3) continue testing until exhaustion of the oxygen source, and (4) classify closed-circuit breathing apparatus by quantity of usable oxygen, i.e., capacity, rather than by duration. Physiology-based stressor levels are suggested as well.

Slope stability accidents are one of the leading causes of fatalities at U.S. surface mining operations. The Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is currently conducting research to reduce the fatalities associated with slope failures. The purpose of this paper to discuss some of this research and to present potential new technologies for slope monitoring and design. The paper also briefly discusses various warning signs of slope instability, introduces the most common slope monitoring methods, describes the limitations of various slope monitoring systems, and presents some field results using some of this new technology.

The Rush Creek district of Marion County, Ark., has had a more or less continuous record of zinc production over the past 40 years. The ore has come from many small mines working on oxidized and semi-oxidized deposits found in the Everton formation where that formation forms the present surface rock. Prospecting has been restricted to the hillsides above the creek levels, the actual ore outcrops being the guides. Little attention has been paid the possible sulfide zones. In August 1942, the United States Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines recommended exploration of the Powell and Cotter formations, which underlie the Everton, for which purpose the Survey had previously located 18 proposed drill-hole sites in geological structures that seemed favorable to are deposition.

A fundamental safety research area for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is to eliminate the occurrence of coal mine explosions or to mitigate their effects. One approach is to develop and evaluate new and innovative seal designs that provide increased explosion protection for mining personnel. The NIOSH Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) cooperated with HeiTech Corp. of Virginia, Barclay Mowlem Construction Ltd. of Queensland, Australia, and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) in three separate research programs to evaluate the strength characteristics and air leakage resistance of numerous innovative seal designs and ventilation control structures for use in underground coal mines. For each phase of the program, various full-scale seals, stoppings, and an overcast design were constructed in PRL's Lake Lynn Experimental Mine near Fairchance, Fayette County, PA. The seals and stoppings were built in crosscuts and were subjected to explosions to evaluate their strengths. Four pumpable cementitious seal designs ranging in thickness from 610 to 915 mm (24 to 36 in) were evaluated in the first cost-reimbursable research program with HeiTech Corp. A simple wooden framework with brattice liner was used as a form to contain the cementitious slurry during the curing period. As the seal designs decreased in thickness, higher compressive strength cementitious grout was used. All four seals withstood an explosion pressure pulse of at least 138 kPa (20 psi) while maintaining acceptable air leakage resistance. In the second cost-reimbursable research program with Barclay Mowlem Construction Ltd. of Australia, several innovative seal and stopping designs and an overcast design were evaluated. Each of the seal designs and the overcast side and wing walls used one or more air-inflated vinyl bladder assemblies anchored to the mine roof and hitched into the ribs and floor. The air within these bladders was displaced with a high-strength cementitious grout. The overcast deck consisted of a 200-mm ('7.8-in) thick reinforced cementitious slab. This was the first time that an overcast structure had been explosion tested under full-scale conditions. All of the seals, stoppings, and overcast design passed the air leakage tests before being subjected to a series of explosions with static pressure pulses ranging from 14 to 475 kPa (2 tab 69 psi). Instrumentation measured seal and overcast wall displacement as a function of time. The 450-mm (1 7.7-in) thick seal in the 2.8-m(9-ft) high third crosscut withstood an explosion pressure of 170 kPa (25 psi), but failed during a later test, which generated a peak static pressure of 475 kPa (69 psi) at the seal location. A similar 450-mm-thick seal in the 2.1-m (7-ft) high second crosscut withstood three explosion tests, which generated peak static pressures of 195, 205, and 370 kPa (28, 30, and 54 psi) at the seal location. Next, the overcast design withstood four explosions, which generated static overpressures ranging from 16 to 47 kPa (2.3 to 6.8 psi). A third program at the request of MSHA evaluated the effectiveness of using pressurized grout bags (Packsetter bags) along the mine roof and ribs in lieu of floor and rib hitching for a standard-type solid- concrete-block seal. This program was initiated to address an urlusual geological mining condition encountered when building seals in entries where required rib hitching is not a viable option due to soft friable coal. Results showed that the use of these quick-setting grout-filled Packsetter bags pressurized internally to 300 kPa (44 psi) not only provides a seal that can withstand a 138-kPa static pressure explosion, but also provides a sealing option where rib hitching is not possible.

The Bureau of Mines hydrogenated coals of different rank that had been irradiated with either x-rays or gamma rays. Lignite, high-volatile A and C bituminous, and low-volatile bituminous coals were exposed to l billion roent¬gens of gamma-ray radiation; specimens of high-volatile A and C bituminous coals from other sources received 6 million roentgens of X-ray radiation. Irradiated and unirradiated control specimens of those coals were hydrogenated in autoclave experiments at (6,000-p.s.i. final pressure and 400° C. with retention times of 15, 30, or 60 minutes depending on the coal rank and catalytic treatment. Comparison of results from irradiated specimens with those from the control experiments showed that the radiation had no beneficial effect on the coal. High-volatile C bituminous coal may have been affected by radiation more than the other coals. One billion roentgens appeared to reduce the amount of coal converted to liquids and gases by about 10 pct., and 6 million roentgens reduced it by about 6 pct. then catalyzed with tin. In all other cases, the conversion of irradiated coal was either reduced by as much as 4 pct. or was essentially the sank as that obtained with unirradiated coal. Irradiation during hydrogenation nay be effective for increasing the reactivity of coal and should be investigated; further work with coals irradiated prier to hydrogenation is not recommended.

This report deals with the processing and marketing of iron and steal scrap in the intermountain States of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming and the northwestern Plains States of Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota. The quantity and quality of iron and steel scrap consumed in both the steel mills and iron foundries in these States in 1964 were decided by (1) the type of facilities used to produce an end product; (2) the availability of a dependable source of iron and steel scrap at competitive prices; and (3) the, ratio of the cost of iron in iron ore to iron in scrap. In recent years the quantity of scrap used per ton of steel ingot produced has decreased. The major individual. consumers of iron and steel scrap were the steel mills in Arizona, Colorado, and Utah, foundries in Utah and Arizona, and copper leaching, operations in Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah. About 2 million tons of iron and steel scrap was used by the iron and steel industry in 1964. Although there has been a decline in the amount of scrap used per ton of steel ingot produced because of changes in steelmaking methods, there has been a slight increase in the overall quantity of scrap used because of the increase in ingot production. It is estimated that the scrap consumption in the steel industry will increase by 19 percent by 1980. In addition to the scrap consumed by the steel industry, 273,000 tons of ferrous scrap were used by copper-leaching operations. Thirty-one percent of the ferrous scrap used by the steel industry in 1964 was purchased from dealers and other sources. The CF&I Steel Corp. (formerly The Colorado Fuel and Iron Corp.) at Pueblo, Colo., complemented its blast- and open-hearth-furnace operations with basic-oxygen converters in 1962. The basic-oxygen and open-hearth furnaces were charged with 30 and 90 percent scrap, respectively. Future use of the open-hearths would probably be used to supplement ingot production requirements. Because it was more economical to use less scrap and a high molten-metal charge, the United States Steel Corp. at Geneva, Utah, which uses the open-hearth process to make steel, charges the furnaces with 25 to 35 percent scrap. The Allison Steel Manufacturing Co. at Tempe, Ariz., uses a 100 percent scrap charge in its electric furnace. Although it was estimated that there were 327,000 tons of various grades of motor vehicle scrap generated in 1963, no estimates were made concerning the total quantity and grade of scrap available in the area. Most of the scrap used in the steelmaking industry originated within the area. It was advantageous to sell scrap generated in eastern Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota to markets in the Midwest because of freight costs.

Analyze variably saturated flow in mining and other environmentally sensitive settings through the use of personal computer (PC) based software. The Problem There is an increasing need for mining companies to quantify water contaminants and their migration in the unsaturated zone. New and innovative computer models are therefore necessary to more accurately assess the potential impact of mining activities on groundwater resources and the environment. Applications for unsaturated flow modeling include (1) assessment of the impact of surface or underground extraction mining on flow conditions; (2) assessment of various hydrologic designs for resource recovery, such as in heap leaching or in situ leach mining; (3) assessment of the transport of conservative nonrcactive constituents in response to migration from spoil piles, or acid mine drainage; and (4) assessment of any combination of the above to facilitate expeditious permitting for mining operations. Since the mid 1970's there has been a proliferation of mathematical models and procedures for solving unsaturated now problems; however, few of these approaches have been integrated into software for public use. Commercially available unsaturated flow software models typically are limited to a single application and have restricted approaches. For example, computer codes that solve the unsaturated flow problem based on an analytic expression arc restricted to a simple geometric shape, homogeneous and isotropic materials, and provide only information regarding pressure and flow conditions in specified wells. The variably saturated computer codes that take advantage of the finite difference or finite element approach arc often restricted to either steady state or transient solutions; utilize one specific moisture-retention relationship and moisture-dependent permeability function; do not account for hysteresis; and are used with specific hardware such as a mainframe or work station. This restricts their use because they arc hard to interface, and arc often poorly documented, support dependent, and expensive. The mining community needs a flexible, more broadly based, variably saturated fluid flow simulator for the PC-platform to more accurately predict fluid movement in the mining environment.

The major developments of the world's Mineral economy in 1955 were the continued rise in production and consumption of practically all major minerals. the sharp increase in output of the fertilizer minerals in response to demands for greater food output, the cutback, in new investment for steel capacity in Europe and Japan, Europe's continuing decline as a producer of primary minerals, and the emergence of nuclear power as an economically competitive factor in the energy economies of the United States and Western Europe. In resource development, discovery of new natural gas deposits in the North Sea and the continued development of Australia's bauxite and iron ore resources, making this country a major source for these commodities, were significant.

Heat contents were measured for Na2CaSi04 and Na2Ca2S02 between 298° and 1,300° K, for Na2Ca2Si309 between 298° and 1,500° K, and for Na4CaSi3O9 between 298° and 1,350° K. Copper-block drop calorimetry was employed. Reversible, first-order transitions were found for Na2CaSi04 and Na2Ca2Si309. The transition for Na2CaSi04 is at 830° K with a heat absorption of 160 cal/mole; that for Na2CagSi309 occurs at 750° K with a heat absorption of 1,550 cal/mole. Results for the other two silicates showed no irregularities. A table of heat content and entropy increments above 298.15° K and heat con-tent equations are included for use in thermodynamic calculations.

Several commercial processes for reclaiming used lubricating oil were duplicated on a laboratory bench scale. Laboratory tests were selected and in some instances modified to determine the physical properties of each oil produced. In addition, the hydrocarbon composition of some samples was determined using a liquid chromatographic technique, and compared with the composition of new oil in order to determine the severity of the re-refining technique. Selected samples of reprocessed oil were reformulated with an additive package for further estimates of quality as determined by wear, corrosion, foaming, and oxidation stability tests. Additionally, several samples of commercially re-refined oil and new oil were obtained and physical properties were determined for comparative studies.

In the separation of a component from a mixture , two fractions are obtained , one containing a high - percentage composition of the component and the other a low - percentage composition . The high - percentage fraction is frequently called the concentrate and the low - percentage fraction the tailing . In many separation processes the recovery is not complete , and the composition of the concentrate decreases as the recovery of the component, which is concentrated , increases . It is this particular class of separations to which this paper is confined .

Highwall mining continues to grow in importance as a coal production method from U.S. surface mines. It may account for as much as 4% of the total U.S. coal production, according to one recent estimate. Analysis of Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) accident and injury statistics shows that, overall, highwall mining has maintained an admirable safety record. Its fatality and injury rates are comparable to those for other surface mining methods, and are significantly lower than those for underground mining. No mining method is risk free, however. Highwall mining injuries have been associated with handling materials, slips and falls, machinery, powered haulage, and other types of incidents. But perhaps the greatest risk, to both personnel and equipment, is from ground control. The two most significant ground control hazards are rock falls from the highwall and equipment entrapment underground. Highwall Stability Ensuring highwall stability through proper ground control engineering is of paramount importance to safe highwall mining operations. The only fatality to occur during the last five years at a highwall mining operation was due to highwall collapse. There have also been numerous near-misses, several of which have involved extensive damage to equipment. In the central Appalachians, where the majority of highwall mining occurs in the U.S., hillseams are the most prominent geologic structures that affect highwall stability. Hillseams (or mountain cracks) are near vertical fractures in the rock that are formed in response to natural weathering and erosion of hillsides. They extend hundreds of feet down from the surface. They typically run parallel to the hillside, but they can also extend across narrow points or ridge lines. The hazard arises when rock slabs that form along the hillseams detach and fall away from the highwall face (See Figure 1). [ ] Unfortunately, it is impossible to control the location of hillseams or reliably detect their presence within a highwall. There are, however, a number of measures that can be taken to minimize the risk of failure associated with hillseams: Planning-Most operators choose to skip those areas of the highwall where a prominent hillseam daylights (See Figure 2). Existence of such areas is known for several weeks in advance of highwall mining; therefore, planning engineers can adjust the layout of highwall mining panels to locate barrier pillars within areas of questionable highwall stability. [ ] Inspection and monitoring-Daily inspection of the benches above the active highwall mining area is a prudent precautionary measure. A crack in a bench immediately above a highwall miner is shown in Figure 3. Simple displacement monitors may be useful for detecting movement along cracks that may precede a significant life-threatening failure. New tools, such as slope monitoring radar, may also prove useful in detecting motion of the rock slopes above active highwall mining operations. Good blasting practice-Most surface coal miners in the central Appalachians use pre-splitting and the familiar halfbarrels are routinely seen throughout the pits. Shorter delays along the face and longer delays between rows can direct more of the blast force parallel to the face, potentially doing less damage to the wall rock. In addition to pre-splitting, decreasing the burden, spacing and charge weight in drill holes close to the highwall will also decrease damage to the wall rock. Decreasing the highwall slope angle-Decreasing the highwall slope angle from 90° (vertical) to 70°-80°, especially in areas of known hillseam concentration, could eliminate the hillseam hazard (See Figure 4). Mercury exists in coal at very low levels; the structure of coal, the vapor pressure of mercury, and its almost universal occurrence introduce unusual problems into the analytical methods. Round-robin analyses by several laboratories, each using its own techniques, indicate that the average mercury content of coal is about 0.2 part per million. Some western coals are as low as 0.05 ppm.

Information is presented on the pressure and rate of pressure development during a dust explosion . The data were obtained in laboratory studies in a 75- cubic inch vessel with mineral , agricultural and chemical dusts . The factors investigated include dust concentration , oxygen concentration of the atmosphere , admixed inert powder , and admixed moisture . Information is given also on the effects of these factors on the composition of the atmosphere after the explosion .

Ltd. and BHP Australia Coal in a research program to evaluate the strength characteristics and air leakage of four seal and two stopping designs for use in underground coal mines. A fundamental safety research area for NIOSH is to eliminate the occurrence of coal mine explosions or to mitigate their effects. One approach to achieve this goal is to develop new and innovative seal designs that provide increased explosion isolation protection for the mining personnel against ignitions that originate from within the gob or. other worked-out areas of the mine Full-scale seals and stoppings were constructed in the Experimental Mine at Lake Lynn Laboratory near Fairchance, Fayette County, PA. They were ail--leakage tested, then subjected to a series of explosions with average pressure pulses ranging from 25 to 500 kPa (3.5 to 72 psi). Instrumentation measured seal displacement and acceleration as a function of time, providing data to assist in the development of numerical models 1'01- future seal design. All three seals designed with Meshblock wire forlnwo~-k ant1 a lnonolithic shotcrete core withstood the first explosion test, which generated an avcr-age rnaximu~n pressure of - 140 kPa (-20 psi) while maintaining acceptable air leakage rates. These seals I-anged from 175 to 325 mm thick. They included a 2.7-m-high by 325-mm-thick seal that was tesled 27 hr after completion against this - 140-kPa explosion pressure, a special requirement of the test program. This seal survived explosions with pressure pulses up to 300 kPa (43 psi). The 2.3-m-high by 325-mm-thick Meshblock seal survived three explosion tests with overpressures up to 455 kPa (66 psi) and satisfied the air leakage criteria. A I ,200-mm-thick plug seal was constructed of two Gunmesh formwork walls in-filled with shotcrete and a 3,450-kPa (500-psi) strength Aquablend core. This plug seal survived three explosions with pressure pulses ranging 11-om 150 lo 430 kPa (-22 to 62.5 psi) with no measurable postexplosion air leakage. Two Gunmesh stoppings with thicknesses 01' 40 and 75 inln withstood explosion overpressures of 23 and 115 kPa, respectively. Anchoring all seal and stopping designs into the roof, ribs, and floor with steel "rootbolts" provided very effective boundary constraint that is critical to the performanceofstructures subject to explosion overpressures.
