"IntroductionA particle dispersion system has been developed to aerosolize bulk powders or material deposited on surfaces such as filters. The size distribution of the aerosolized particles can then be obtained by sampling the particles with an aerosol sizing instrument such as a TSI aerodynamic particle sizer (APS) or a cascade impactor.Of particular interest is the applicability of using this technique to obtain the size distribution of particles collected on filters. This system has been used to determine the size distribution of coal dust particle collected on membrane filters. The use of this device in this application is quite intriguing in that, if this technique can be shown to accurately determine the size distribution of airborne particles, one can easily collect particle samples using either personal or area particle samplers, determine the mass concentration of the collected material through gravimetric techniques and then use the particle dispersion system coupled with the APS to determine the particle size distribution. With this technique one can determine the particle size of dust in environments, such as underground mines, where it would be inconvenient or impossible to use a particle sizing instrument.Particle Dispersion SystemA prototype particle dispersion system has been developed for aerosolizing particles. A schematic diagram of the system is shown in Figure 1. The system consists of mechanism for advancing the particle sample beneath a dust pickup tube, a venturi for deagglomerating the particles, and a instrument for analyzing the aerosolized particulate matter.The procedure to analyze a particle sample is as follows. The particles to be aerosolized are placed on a sample plate from where the particles are picked up by an air stream flowing upward in a small capillary tube (dust pickup tube). This tube operates as a small vacuum cleaner passing over the sample plate. The air is drawn up the capillary tube at a rate of 2 L/m by a venturi aspirator. This is accomplished by placing the outlet of the capillary tube near the throat of the venturi. The accelerated velocity of the air creates a low pressure in this region which draws flow up the capillary tube. From the outlet of the capillary tube particles are transported to the inlet of the APS where a small fraction are sampled and the aerodynamic diameter of the particles determined. The particles which are not measured by the APS are passed into a HEPA filter."

"INTRODUCTION The question as to whether or not the flow of water through pneumatic rock drills commonly used in this country keeps to a minimum dust disseminated into the air during drilling arose during a study of the dust-in-air conditions in Butte mines from February to July 1936 and December 1936 to June 1937 made by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., Butte, Mont, The purpose of this report is to describe the study, including some experimental work on the subject, and to give test results.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe help of the ventilation department of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. in planning the study and collecting the data is gratefully acknowledged.EXPERIMENTAL CONDITIONSTests were conducted in an untimbered 6- by 8-foot crosscut in medium-hard granitic rock near the shaft station on an inactive level of one of the active Butte mines. Figure 1 shows the plan and section of the test location. Air was drawn from the shaft at the station, through the crosscut, and up through another shaft. The flow of air through the crosscut was decreased by a brattice downstream from the sampling location, so that relatively high, easily measurable dust concentrations would be obtained in the tests. Impinger samples for determing concentration of dust in the air were collected in an opening 51 inches wide, 29 inches high, and about 4o inches from the top of the rails in a wooden stopping about 16 feet downstream from the place where the test holes were drilled."

All bituminous-coal mines, by the nature of their product and inherent gassy tendencies, are subject to explosions or mine fires. The evolution from large, hand-loading sections employing numerous men and containing open-type equipment, lights, and nonpermissible explosives to small, concentrated mechanical sections with but few well-supervised men utilizing modern preventive equipment has not altered this premise. Mine catastrophes such as Centralia and New Orient No. 2, as well as recent disasters of less magnitude, have refuted the trend of thinking that modern equipment, will prevent or localize explosions and prevent widespread or loss of life.

Coal bumps are influenced by geologic conditions, the geometric design of coal mine excavations, and the sequence and rate of extraction. Researchers from private industry and government agencies around the world have studied mechanisms of violent failure and have identified individual factors that contribute to coal bumps. To develop predictive tools for assessing coal bump potential, the authors initiated a comprehensive study using information from 25 case studies undertaken in U.S. mines. Multiple linear regression and numerical modeling analyses of geological and mining conditions were used to identify the most significant factors contributing to stress bumps in coal mines. Twenty-five factors were considered initially, including mechanical properties of strata, stress fields, face and pillar factors of safety, joint spacings, mining methods, and stress gradients. In situ strength was estimated in 12 coal seams where uniaxial compressive strength exceeded 2,000 psi. Allowances were made for favorable local yielding characteristics of mine roof and floor in reducing damage severity. Pillar and face factors of safety were calculated using displacement-discontinuity methods for specific geometries. This work identified the most important variables contributing to coal bumps. These are (1) mechanical properties of strata, including local yield characteristics of a mine roof and floor, (2) gate pillar factors of safety, (3) roof beam thickness, joint spacing, and stiffness characteristics, which influence released energy,(4) stress gradients associated with the approach of mining to areas of higher stress concentrations, and (5) the mining method. By combining the strength of both analytical and statistical methods, new capabilities were developed for predicting coal bump potential and for building confidence intervals on expected damage.

This study ranks the factors impacting survival during a coal mine fire. It bas already been established that reducing time delays is the most important factor in saving lives. Consequently every event during afire is measured in terms d its duration, and the effectiveness d any action taken to improve survival is measured in terms d the time it saves. By ranking actions according to time saved these authors found that a comhination d actions was most effective. This combination was: • installing lifelines. • moderately decreasing air leakage and • decreasing the fire growth rate. Changing ventilation leakage alone was much less effective, as was altering the CO (carbon monoxide), sensor alarm threshold. These results confirm an earlier fault-tree study on escape from mine fires. The fault-tree study bad shown that, with the exception d delays, single factor changes have minimal impact. Significant reductions in fire fatalities only take place with multiple factor changes.

High-grade synthetic rutile has been produced in the laboratory from domestic ilmenite concentrates by a new carbonyl process. The ilmenite was first reduced to convert the iron oxides to metal and then treated at temper-atures over 1000 C in high-pressure carbon monoxide (CO) to convert the iron to the pentacarbonyl. Rapid carbonylation was achieved in the presence of small quantities of selected promoters. Maximum iron removal occurred at temperatures between 110° and 130° C at CO pressures from 1,000 to 1,400 psig. Iron pentacarbonyl appeared as liquid and vapor in the reactor and could be removed by gravity flow and vapor transport. More than 90 pct of the iron was extracted in 2-hr experiments at pressures of 1,000 psig and above. The Ti02 product is porous owing to the removal of the iron, has the rutile crystal structure, and is suitable for chlorination. Waste disposal problems associated with the process would be minimal because the iron pentacarbonyl can be decomposed to produce iron powder or pellets for sale and CO for recycling.

John Marks said in his acceptance of the Hartman Award in 2008, "I guess that without the occasional complaint, your mine is probably over-ventilated" (Marks, 2008). Miners are seldom in this situation and spend much of the time trying to find enough air to keep an operation running. With examination, there are usually changes that can be made to increase the efficiency of ventilation systems. Mine ventilation air is a costly commodity, especially by the time it has been heated or cooled and moved to the bottom of the shaft and through the mine airways. Modifications that result in surplus mine ventilation air could bring financial and environmental benefits. Some issues mine operators have needed to address recently are increased airflow requirements to dilute diesel particulates in metal and nonmetal mines, to ventilate reserves that are deeper, hotter, and further away from fans and shafts, and to meet demands from increased production. This paper discusses successful methods to find additional usable air when there is no extra ventilation capacity. Most of the options presented in this paper are useful for metal/ nonmetal operations but some may be applicable to coal as well.

The effect of small percentages of sodium chloride on the incendivity of permissible explosives was studied by the Bruceton up-and-down technique in gallery tests. Both the reduction in incendivity achieved by addition of sodium chloride and application of the test method to explosives evaluation are discussed. It is demonstrated that the up-and-down technique in gallery testing is suitable for distinguishing differences in incendivity between different explosive compositions and between lots of the same composition. The study also shows that addition of relatively small quantities of sodium chloride tends to reduce the incendivity of explosives to firedamp, but addition of sodium chloride cannot insure reduced incendivity. Any improvement attributable to the salt can be counteracted by undefined variations in the explosive. The need for experimental investigations of a number of factors that may affect the safety of permissible explosives is emphasized. In this island, which is a Crown colony of the British Empire, and where remarkably extensive remains of ancient mining operations-- mainly for copper--exist, the mining law of Turkey governs, rith such modifications as were made necessary by the transfer of the country in 1878 from Turkey to Great Britain, and with such fer ameliorations thereof as have since been ordered by the local authorities. The Turkish law to which Van agenen refers is, no doubt, "2 Shaban, 1285," which though subsequently repealed with respect to Turkey is still in force in Cyprus, inasmuch as the mines regulations (amendment) law of 1925 "is to be read in connection with 2 Shaban, 1285" (articles 61 to 67 of which were repealed by the law of 1925): In the preparation of this digest; access was had to the mines regula- tions (amendment) Iaw, No. 5 of 1882; which Van Wagenen does not mention. Other Cyprian laws, passed since the publication of Van Wagenen's work in 1918, are the following: Eines regulations (amendment) law, 1925, No. 12 of 1925; mining-prospecting permits; notification, No. 539 of 1927; mines regu- lations 1926, No. 1006 of 1926; mines regulations (amendment) rules of court, 1926, No. 144 of 1926; mines regulations (amendment). 1a, 1928, ko. 3 of 1528 (as amended by No. 32 of 1928). Most of these làrs are concerned with the regulation of actual mining operation--safety and sanitary provisions; and, therefore, they ado little important information. The Cyprian Government's official publication says: It is considered that the laws regulating mining in Cyprus are inadequate and antiquated, and a thorough revision is necessary to bring them up to a standard of modern mining practice and to encourage mining ventures in the island. As a preliminary to this the mines regulations, 1926, were issued to govern the workings of the larger mines; and serious attention is now being given to the regulating of prospecting, quarries, machinery in mines, and generally to the bringing of mining in Cyprus into conformity with the other mining countries of the world.

Six different types of blasting caps, mainly of the type used in coal mines, were evaluated to determine both their 1lF and DC characteristics. Two of the caps were of foreign manufacture. All the American made caps had "no-fire" (0.1% firing probability with 95% confidence, as determined by the Bruceton test) levels above 0.04 watts. One of the caps of foreign manufacture had a "no-fire" level of 0.023 watts. A worst case analysis of blasting cap pick up of RF power in coal mines was performed and safe distance curves were generated.

ESTABLISHMENT of an effective inspection system has been held essen¬tial to any international agreement that may be designed primarily to curb the testing of nuclear weapons. A number of reports and papers already have described basic inspection concepts and appraised various pro¬cedures, techniques, and methods as to their probable effectiveness in detecting and identifying violations under such agreement. This report results from a study of only one part of the contemplated inspection system, specifically the final phases embracing onsite investigations and mine examination techniques. The results and reports of earlier work were reviewed in detail, and subjects that were found to have been exhaus¬tively evaluated are recognized by reference and not redescribed here. In other instances, previously described techniques, methods, and clues were revaluated to define more clearly their practical value to the final objective of an onsite inspection. Previous documentation does not refer to a number of subjects, techniques, tools, clues, and methods considered by the study; this report treats these in detail, even though when applied singly or collectively their practical value may be questionable.

This chapter includes tables from 1984 that were not available in time for publication of the 1984 Minerals Yearbook, but does not include corresponding tables for 1985. The value of raw nonfuel minerals produced in the United States during 1985 was estimated at $23.2 billion, an increase of $0.07 billion over the value for 1984. This is the third consecutive year that the value has increased, and except for a decrease in 1982, the value for each year has increased since 1971, or 13 out of 14 years. However. while the value of industrial minerals production continued to grow, reflecting the growth of the domestic economy, the value of metal mine production decreased in 1985 by 6%. This drop was more than offset by a 3% increase in the value of industrial minerals production because the value of industrial minerals produced was more than three times larger than the value of metals. The decrease makes 1986 the third year in the past 5 years in which a drop in the value of metal mining production occurred in the United States where production continued to lag behind growing world production. Domestic production of such major commodities 88 aluminum, copper, iron ore, phosphate rock, and zinc continued to decline owing to a number of international and domestic factors. Gold continued to be the most active commodity in the domestic metal mining industry. Despite lower prices, gold output increased to 2.5 million troy ounces, a 19% increase over that of 1984. The estimated annual production capacity of new gold mines beginning production exceeded 1 million ounces.

Data input is divided into three divisions for discussion purposes below. These divisions are: a) Information Retrieval and Control Options; b) Gaming Options; and c) Descriptive Parameters. The data input for model application, which is listed in Appendix B, is segmented to show the location of these divisions. In actuality, however, these divisions form a continuous data file. Each 80 character record of data input is edited by an alpha¬numeric editing routine which permits the format free numerical speci¬fication in most data divisions. The editing routine searches each record for numeric types and when found, converts these numbers into computational forms. The Fortran convention of decimal and integer numbers is not used by the editor so that a number may appear on the data record in either form desired by the user. Since the editor seeks only numeric types, the input records may be freely commented and identified with alphabetic letters (A - Z). One or more input records may contain only commentary information or be entirely blank. On the other extreme, any data record may contain up to 40 numeric elements, each separated by a blank space. The application of this capability can be seen by reference to the data. Information Retrieval and Control Options The information retrieval options specify the detail of infor¬mation required to be printed. The mineral dressing research here reported is part of a continuing program by the Bureau of Mines to develop new or improved concentration processes for oxidized or partly oxidized lead and zinc ores. A sample of low-grade sulfide-oxide, lead-zinc ore from Jasper County, Mo., containing galena, cerussite, pyromorphite, hemimorphite, smithsonite, and sphalerite was concentrated by froth flotation and tabling to a grade of 66 percent lead. Because of the presence of a high content of slime-size values, the overall recovery of lead was limited to 64 percent at this grade. Tests to recover the zinc by froth flotation and by gravity concentration did not give satisfactory results. INTRODUCTION Since its establishment, the Rolla Metallurgy Research Center has con-ducted studies of base metals as a part of its overall program (1, 2, 3, 4, 5,6,7).3/ This research has been, and is, directed to beneficiating complex and submarginal ores, to retreating rejects from commercial installations, and to developing fundamental data.

ALL SURVEY DATA WAS NORMALIZED TO A STANDARD DENSITY OF 0.075 POUNDS/CU.FT. PRIOR TO THE CALCULATION OF INPUT PARAMETERS FOR THIS SIMULATION. IN THIS RUN, THE ORIGINAL VENTILATION NETWORK HAS BEEN MODIFIED TO INCLUDE NEW INTAKE AND RETURN AIRSHAFTS AT THE WEST MAINS. IN ADDITION A CONNECTION HAS BEEN MADE BETWEEN THE MINE UNDER STUDY AND A SHAFT IN A WORKED OUT MINE IN THE 1 FACE AREA. THIS SHAFT IS CONSIDERED AN INTAKE SHAFT FOR THIS RUN.

This report is Volume III of a three volume final report dealing in general with the microseismic monitoring of a longwall coal mine. The research presented in Volume III was undertaken as part of the overall microseismic project in an effort to relate, if possible, observed micro seismic activity with surface subsidence. A discussion in regard to the correlation of these factors is presented in Volume I of the final report. Field measurements of subsidence carried out at a Central Pennsylvania Coal Mine are described. Comparative analysis of actual field results with data obtained using empirical and finite element techniques Has undertaken. Comparison of field results with published National Coal Board data revealed marked differences. The influence of stronger rock beds overlying the coal seam in the current study was assumed to I be the main cause. Use of the general Gaussian profile resulted in a satisfactory fit to the field data provided the value of the maximum field subsidence was used in the analysis. In general, when low tensile strengths were assumed for the associated rocks, finite element techniques gave results which compared well with the observed field data. The study also indicated that at shallow depths there is a marked difference in subsidence over dip and rise sides of the coal-face, maximum subsidence being shifted more towards the dip side. Finally, time-dependent deformations were shown to be insignificant shortly after mining operations ceased.

"The Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., has conducted a series of experiments an air measurement in fan-pipe installa¬tions in a Butte mine during the fall and winter of 1922-3. The chief purpose was to determine the friction factors for different types and sizes 3f fan piping, but much attention was devoted to methods of air measurement, not only with respect to the methods used for friction factor tests, but also to com¬parison with other methods.The air flow was measured simultaneously at two points 380.6 feet apart in six different fan-pipe installations, each over 500 feet in overall length, in a rock cross cut adjacent to an air shaft,The air pressure was regulated by two sinoco multivane fans, driven by 7 ½ h.p. motors, the fans being connected in tandem so that one discharged into the intake of the other through a short connector and the latter discharged into the line through a straight connection equipped with a honeycomb of 4-inch squares or S radial vanes to prevent spiral flow of air, At each point where it was desired to measure the air flow, measuring sections equipped with piezometer rings pierced for easy insertion of pitot tubes, thermometers, etc. Piezometer static pressures were used in all the tests as standard, and dynamic or total pressures only were obtained with the pitot tubes, except for purposes of comparison.The tubes had special guide blocks, designed especially for underground work. To insure greater accuracy two tubes were used simultaneously, in order to obtain the velocity pressure at the center of the section simultaneously with that nearer the circumference, so that the mean velocity would be determined as accurately as possible. The tubes were held in proper place by means of flat guide boards. Velocity pressures were measured in manometers."

In the early winter of 1919 the Pittsburgh petroleum laboratory of the Bureau of Mines undertook the work of testing fuel oil samples representing purchases of the United State Shipping Board for ships sailing from the port of New York. fuel oil was, at this time, being bought on a contract which involved specifications issued by the United States Navy under dace of October 2, 1920 (See Bulletin 1, Oil Division, U. S. Fuel Administration.)The object of the Bureau of Mines in undertaking this inspection work was twofold. (1) The Bureau was in position to give, and the Shipping Board needed, reliable laboratory service for checking the quality of the fuel oil purchased, the value of which ran into millions of dollars for,year's supply. (2) It was believed, and later demonstrated, that the existing specifications did not insure the obtaining of a reliably satisfactory quality of oil.The objection to the specifications concerned the employment of a clause limiting the gravity of the oil. The inadequacy of gravity specifications for several types of petroleum products has long been recognized, and there was every reason to reason to believe that they were no more desirable for fuel oil than for gasoline, kerosene, or lubricating oil. A first and obvious objection was the fact that it is somewhat difficult to make accurate gravity tests on ""heavy"" residuum fuel oils. (The Bureau found it necessary to employ or such tests a rather tedious procedure involving the use of a picnometer and an accurate balance, as the simpler methods, employing hydrometer or displacement balance, proved unreliable in a large proportion of cases.) A second and more important objection was that gravity tests, even when accurately made, do not provide a reliable index of the actual quality of the oil.
