During the past year, the Canadian Centre for Automation and Robotics in Mining (CCARM), McGill University, Montreal, has been involved with INCO Ltd.'s Manitoba Division in investigating the extent and mechanisms of blasthole deviation. Drilling accuracy can well be regarded as perhaps the single greatest "controllable" factor influencing dilution in INCO's open sloping operations. As INCO and other underground mines seek to minimize dilution, while attempting to maximize productivity, issues of drilling accuracy become increasingly significant. It is important therefore, that means exist by which true blasthole trajectories can be determined, so that if needed, modifications to hole loading instructions or redrilling of holes can be ordered, thus avoiding poor blast results.

Dust explosions in underground sulphide and oil shale mines result from the detonation of explosives in the blasting operations. Explosive composition, oxygen balance, priming and ideality of detonation were examined theoretically and experimentally in the presence of reactive sulphide dust. It was found that the temperature as well as the chemical composition of the gaseous products of detonation are the controlling parameters related to the explosive. Non aluminized, oxygen balanced emulsion explosives were proven to be relatively safe, while explosives creating combustible products were proven to be extremely dangerous due to the secondary flame they generate. Since a large number of dusty orebodies are often very friable, low density emulsion explosives are also examined for application in production blasting.

This research program was undertaken to better understand the factors causing abnormal NOx fumes generation from blasting operations in surface coal mining. More specifically, unusual quantities of nitrogen dioxide and nitric oxide have been observed at several surface coal mines in the Powder River Basin, Wyoming. All these mining operations have several points in common: (i) Blasting is performed using gravity loaded emulsions or emulsion/ANFO blends (ii) Unusual NOx (Oxides of Nitrogen) emissions are observed mostly when blasting is conducted in the overburden as opposed to the coal seam itself (iii) The overburden consists of very weakly consolidated ground strata, providing relatively weak confinement conditions for the explosives, and (iv) Significant ground water is observed.

This paper summarizes the course of mine blasting safety, particularly in underground coal mining, in the USA for over a century of mining operations. During the late 1800's and especially in the first decade of the 1900's, a large number of mine explosions occurred in which blasting played a significant role. A contributor to the large number of mine explosions during this time period was the use of black blasting powder to extract coal and other minerals. A review is made of some of the more significant underground coal mine explosions that resulted from blasting operations during this time period up to the present day. The safety measures that were adopted and required by a series of laws as a result of mine explosion disasters in which blasting was one of the factors are examined. The time line of historical improvements in blasting safety and the tremendous reduction in fatalities and injuries over a century is illustrated and discussed. The improvements, which included the elimination of black powder and dynamite and the introduction of safer explosives termed "permissibles" occurred slowly over time and culminated from the occurrence of many coal mine explosion disasters. The blasting accident history over the past decade is discussed to show the great gains made when compared to the first decade of the 1900's. The most recent blasting accident fatality that occurred in October 2006 at a U.S. underground coal mine is also discussed. Although the blasting accident record is significantly improved from over a century ago, continual improvement is needed to reach the goal of zero fatalities.

The Bureau of Mines was funded by the Office of Surface Mining (OSM) to determine how blast vibrations from a local surface coal mine were affecting homes in the towns of Daylight and McCutchanville, located in southwestern Indiana near Evansville. Although Daylight was about two miles from the blasting and McCutchanville four to five miles away, many residents claimed that blast vibrations were damaging their homes. At least one citizen felt that the vibrations worsened at the time the mine began cast blasting.

Construction of the $200 million Riverchase Galleria Mall in Hoover, Alabama was started in early 1984. The construction area consists of about 70 acres. The extensive building complex requires heavy concrete foundations which have to be poured during the early stages of construction and on a nearly daily situation so that contractual agreements can be met on a timely basis.

Blasting at Sebesi in Central Tutupan Pit area in South Kalimantan, Indonesia is planned to be using emulsion, where used oil makes up 50% of the total emulsion fuel. The significant amount of used oil from various mining operation units had been of deep concern since it might be reused to implement environmental programs by substituting 50% of fuel with used oil in emulsion, thus decreasing fuel consumption and increasing efficiency by reducing fuel cost. Used oil must pass laboratory test to meet the Indonesian National Standards (SNI) No. 7642:2010 of used oil specification. Other considerations include the location which is adjacent to the mine office facilities with a radius of <1,750 meters (5,741 feet). Thus, appropriate methods must be performed to meet the SNI No. 7571:2010 of vibration threshold in order to implement safe blasting technique and prevent potential damage.

Overbreak into the wall rock of a development drift leads to the inevitable need to rehabilitate a drift. Moreover, overbreak in a production heading can lead to external dilution and lower ore grades. Both of these factors are critical to bottom line costs of underground operations today. The geology of the Homestake orebody makes this an even more complex problem. For over fifteen years the Homestake Mine has attempted to implement perimeter blasting techniques that are both safe and cost effective. Many practical perimeter methods and products have been tested including air decking; low density emulsions; various types of stick powder; various decoupling media including rope, low density ANFO, polystyrene ANFO, salt based ANFO, and various grain detonating cords up to 200 grain.

The results of an ongoing study to determine the response of full contact rock bolts to shock waves due to blasting are presented. A time domain systems modeling and analysis technique was used to identify the axial and bending response of the bolt when explosives charges are detonated at close-in distances.

When explosives are detonated in the borehole where there is an air gap between the explosive charge and the borehole of inner wall, the shock cave in an air gap travelling ahead of the detonation front sill be generated. This shock wave is called the precursor air shock wave (PAS). The explosive is precompressed by the PAS, and as a result of that the detonation failure occur on occasion. This phenomenon is well known as channel effect.

One of the requirements in open pit gold mines is to minimise the mixing of ore and waste. Dilution can be reduced by choke blasting and control of the initiating sequencing. The authors have used the DMC computer model (developed at SANDIA) to examine the effects of timing and charge distribution on ore dilution. The model has been calibrated by measurements of vertical uplift derived from high speed videos made at the Dome Super Pit in Timmins.

Qinling Tunnel is the longest tunnel in China. The rock stratum is very hard rock - intact mixed gneiss. At the beginning of the construction, drift-pilot excavation is very costly due to the use of regular drill and blasting methods. After tests on the acoustic impedance match between rock and explosive, watergel explosive, which has a high velocity of detonation and high brisance, has been used for hard rock blasting. In addition, different cut plans have been compared. It was found that four-large-hole cut is the most effective. And the number of drillholes and specific charge cut down and the average advance reaches more than 94% of the blastholes depth. Thus, the difficult problem of hard rock blasting in drift pilot is successfully solved, while safe and quick construction is guaranteed.

Through the 119 year history of the Homestake Mine various methods of raise mining have been used, these include conventional, bored, and drop raises. These raises provide passage for men and supplies, provide ventilation, transfer broken rock from level to level, and serve as emergency escapeways. As the 1980s came to a close, many of the larger ore bodies in the mine had been mined out. This has resulted in many crown pillar situations that required a method to mine them. In addition, the Homestake ore body also contains numerous ore reserves that have short vertical height. The ore itself can be from vertical to 50 degrees in dip. Due to the high cost of drift and ramp development many of these ore bodies are sub-economic using conventional mechanized cut and fill mining.

A vibration record is a complex of motions resulting from a combination of direct, reflected and refracted seismic energy that originated at a blast source. Multiple hole blasting using delays further complicates the motion in that overlapping of seismic wave trains may occur when delays do not fire in the programed sequence. This can result in variations in amplitude, frequency and wave-1ength of the vibration. Amplitude may be doubled, frequency may oscillate between the highest and lowest frequencies present and wave-length may approach doubling of the longest wave-length present. These effects can present serious problems to conducting a safe blasting program since increased amplitudes and lower frequencies present higher damage potentials for structures. The development of these effects is described and illustrated graphically to show how these effects can occur.

In the United States each year it has been estimated that expansive soils cause approximately $9.0 billion in damage to buildings, roads, airports, and other facilities. This figure alone exceeds the damage estimate for earthquakes, floods, tornadoes, and hurricanes combined. Unfortunately, some cases of expansive soil damage (swelling) are blamed on rock blasting operations if the blasting operations are located within the immediate area. While simple tests, such as the Atterberg limits test, can characterize a soil as expansive, it does not necessarily answer the question whether the foundation soils are causing distresses to a structure. In particular, it appears that once a soil has been labeled as nonexpansive it is no longer considered as a problem soil, in which case blast vibrations become the prime suspect.

Today I would like to share with you some blasting practices used in the thick coal seam mines of Northeastern Wyoming. I will begin by giving you a general overview of a thick seam coal operation at The Carter Mining Company's Rawhide Mine. I will then discuss the blasting procedures used at this operation. The Rawhide Mine is one of 13 mines operating in the Eastern Powder River Basin of Northeastern Wyoming. Approximately 23 billion tons of recoverable coal lies in the Powder River Basin. The Rawhide Mine is currently producing approximately 8 million tons per year. Rawhide is the 9th largest coal mine in the United States according to 1982 production. We also received the 1982 Sentinels of Safety Award for being the safest surface coal mine in the United States. Rawhide's permitted capacity is 24 million tons.

The energy output of an explosive is typically calculated using an equation of state and computer applications. Results are reported as weight and bulk strength, either in absolute terms or relative to ANFO. The effect of the equation of state selected and the assumptions regarding the energy calculation are considered and interpreted for the purpose of blast design. It appears that variations in the heat of detonation which result from the selection of the equation of state and parameters associated with it are not sufficient to significantly affect blast patterns, explosive consumption and costs. However variations stemming from the use of "available energy" associated with a cut-off pressure are significant, suggesting in many cases large pattern expansions. The validity of the various approaches is discussed and blast design results based on the energy calculated by the different approaches are presented and evaluated.
