Tracer blasting is commonly used in Canadian underground mines for overbreak control. It involves tracing a column of ANFO with a low strength detonating cord. In order to investigate the effectiveness of tracer blasting in perimeter control and to understand its mechanism, a field experimentation was conducted which involved drifting, benching and pipe tests.

Both fragmentation and safety can be improved by following proper procedures in loading boreholes. Proper loading procedures such as primer location, borehole sealing, decking, and stemming along with the hazards of dropping on primers are presented. Discussions follow on the reason for the use of each procedure along with the possible consequences such as hazards, misfires, or poor fragmentation.

A constitutive model for the simulation of fracture and fragmentation processes in rapidly loaded rocks is studied. The model was included in a wave propagation finite element code. The results obtained from two different configurations of explosive charge and reflecting surfaces in a plane strain problem were studied. The evolution of the time-dependent fracture pattern is presented.

The complex and non-linear nature of blast fracturing has restricted common bract design primarily to empirical approaches. The code developed for this investigation simulates the pattern of interacting radial fractures from an array of blastholes, at various burdens and spacings, and in simultaneous and delayed modes. The resultant pattern is analyzed and a fragment adze distribution calculated.

This paper presents data and theorem to calculate the risk of experiencing undesirable lightning related events while blasting or while engaged in other lightning sensitive activities. The paper provides an overview of lightning hazards in blasting operations and a brief history of lightning related blasting accidents. Lightning continues to be the primary cause of premature initiations of explosives in mining; on average, over two such incidents are reported to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) each year. The energy contained in lightning discharges and how this energy sets off explosives in mining is presented. Three categories of lightning warning methods: public media, lightning detectors, and atmospheric electrostatic field measurement are discussed. The remainder of the paper presents recently acquired data on the spatial characteristics of lightning development. This data is used to estimate the risk assumed by blasters under certain conditions. Risk estimations are made for electric and nonelectric blasting if persons are evacuated when cloud-to-ground (c-g) lightning approaches within a certain distance. For example, about 0.6% of all c-g lightning strikes have no other c-g lightning strikes within 25 miles in the previous 30 minutes. The paper shows that a typical blaster using nonelectric initiation in a high lightning density area with a 100% accurate lightning detector set to alarm at 25 miles would have a lightning caused unplanned detonation every 14,000 years.

This paper presents a simplified two-dimensional numerical model of block fragmentation in a Jointed rock mass during the late or throw stage of a blast after wave effects have subsided. The model is based on the distinct element method. Examples illustrate the approach and allow for a comparison of effects of Joint patterns on fragmentation and resulting block motion.

Implosive-type electrical/mechanical connectors such as XECONEX have been used extensively for joining electrical transmission lines. This implosive action of explosives has also been applied to other forms of high energy metal working with excellent results. However, as with many other products, the inherent blast energy of these units has caused some environmental concerns especially when used in proximity to inhabited areas.

Previous work in which rock properties and blasting parameters (geometry, charging and timing) were reported together with truck filling times, is taken as a starting point for a thorough analysis of the influence of the former on the mucking velocity. The experimental set was composed by 11 blasts made in an open pit mine. Non-parametric, distribution-free statistics is applied. The mucking rates (in bank cubic meters per unit of bucket volume and per hour) appear to be clearly dependent on the explosive energy and powder factor, both magnitudes combined as energetic powder factor (energy per unit of rock volume). The mucking rate is a non-monotonic function of such factor in the range of the blasts analyzed. The determination of the function is optimum when the fraction of the explosive below grade is not considered and when the explosive energy is qualified as that delivered at a partial detonation regime. Different types of loaders seem appropriate for different energy levels. At low levels both front loaders and rope shovels obtain small productivities without a statistically significant difference in their performance. At high energy levels, front loaders qualify higher than rope shovels. Mucking velocities can be equally small at low energy powder factors and at high ones if rope shovels are involved.
