Abstract The aqueous oxidation of pyrite in caustic solutions under oxygen pressure was investigated by measuring that effect of reaction variable on oxygen consumption by the reactions. From the results of this investigation, a model for the process has been proposed. In this model, sulphur diffuses as a positive ion through an oxide layer which forms on the sulphide particles and is then oxidized to sulphate ion. Iron is oxidized by substitutional diffusion of oxygen atoms into the oxide layer. The effect of most reaction variables on the rate of oxygen consumption can be explained with this model. Introduction Recent investigations (1,2,3) have shown that certain sulphide ores can be readily leached by agitating the ore in the form of a pulp under pressure in the presence of oxygen. Since very little was known of the mechanism of this oxidation, a programme of investigation was inaugurated in 1949 in the laboratories of the Department of Mining and Metallurgy of the University of British Columbia. Financial support for the investigation was received from the National Research Council in the form of student grants and bursaries, from the Canadian Liquid Air Company, Limited, and from the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited. The first objective was to devise a technique to study the primary oxidation reactions in aqueous solutions and to apply the technique to a detailed study of the oxidation of pyrite in caustic solutions.

"INTRODUCTION Over the past decade, a number of publications have described the advances in High Intensity Wet Magnetic Separation. A number of significant, but small capacity installations were made and are successfully operating. These were followed some three years ago by larger installations treating ilmenite gravity concentrates; at least one machine treating 25 tons per hour of new feed was installed and is successfully operating.However, this still did not result in general acceptance that High Intensity Wet Magnetic Separation could be applied on a large scale. Neither did it dispel the feeling that High Intensity Wet Magnetic Separation was ""expensive"" and hence, confined to small scale – high value applications suchas the cleaning of tin concentrates. In addition, there is the usual reluctance of being the ""guinea pig"" which has resulted in waiting to see ""someone else"" make the first large installation decision. Such a decision and installation has now been made.Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to show that High Intensity Wet Magnetic Separation has been commercially accepted on a large scale and to show its general application to the base metal mineral industry.Examples are confined to a few specifics due to the large volume of preliminary test data that is available. The art has now reached the stage where much of the preliminary work should be taken through to serious evaluation."

We present an integrated analysis of laboratory-based thermally induced fracturing and results of numerical models to give insight to the role of thermal shock fracture on geothermal reservoir rocks. Thermal stimulation is a reservoir permeability enhancement technique applied to commercial geothermal reservoir rocks to enhance fluid injection capabilities for spent power plant working fluids. The process is well known to enhance permeability but the thermodynamic and physical constraints of the process are less certain. In an attempt to constrain the interaction and the ideal conditions that lead to permeability enhancement, experimental procedures were carried out to mimic the conditions that a reservoir rock would experience during a thermal stimulation using temperature differentials ranging from 50-300°C. Samples underwent such thermal gradients under controlled laboratory conditions and were characterized for the changes to permeability, porosity, ultrasonic velocities, dynamic elastic moduli and petrological changes. The thermal stimulation was simulated in a FLAC2D thermal numerical model to investigate the nature of the thermally induced changes in the sample. The development of this model also allows us to investigate the relationship between geological characteristics and the ability to thermally stimulate any type of rock. The results indicate that numerical thermal shocking experiments are corroborated by laboratory-based results. The implication of this study is that the refined numerical models present an insight to the conditions and constraints under which thermal stimulation can prove to enhance permeability that could not be gained through purely laboratory-based studies.

Codelco, a multi-process primary copper producer, is undertaking a full life cycle inventory (LCI) of all its commercial products based on copper and molybdenum. During this work, many questions have surfaced regarding the contribution of process unit design to specific aspects of a product's LCI and, more importantly, how such designs could be improved using a life cycle perspective. Management strategy efforts were undertaken to improve the LCI footprint, however it was found that the corrective actions were almost impossible to apply at the operation level in plant, given the ongoing timing pressures of extractive mining, and costs saving priorities. Additionally, it was found that most of the important comparative differences between operations had structural reasons. In this circumstance, the LCI practitioner group from 1M2, and the environmental managers from Codelco, decided to shift its efforts to place the critical LC1 aspects to the design process of future developments. Hatch Associates has developed unique tools in their Sustainable Plant Design (SPD) package that compliment and enhance LCA methods; these effectively drive sustainability into the heart of the design process. By using LCA and SPD in a project design phase, you cannot only address potential hotspots, but also decide on materials, location and size of certain facilities to optimize for energy efficiency. Moreover, you can avoid the shifting of environmental burdens upstream or downstream within the plant and finally it is extremely useful in identifying opportunities for greenhouse gas reduction.

"Finance Minister Paul Martin's first budget disappointed almost everyone. The business sector was disappointed at the some what feeble attempt to grapple with the country's deficit. The mining industry was disappointed by tax proposals regarding mine reclamation that fall short of the industry's needs. Has anybody been happy with a federal budget? Federal Budget DisappointsThe federal government's budget papers that were tabled on February 22, 1994, contained a rather bizarre mixture of unrelated tax proposals. The budget signals an unexpected attack on the tax treatment of debt settlements, on certain types of corporate reorgani2ations, and on income earned by foreign affiliates. This is an old style budget, which proposes a pot pourri of technical changes and policy initiatives. Mine ReclamationEffective February 23, 1994, a taxpayer's contributions to a prescribed mine reclamation trust fund will be deductible as a current expense. The budget papers do not provide a definition of what will constitute a ""prescribed"" trust: this definition will surface in due course. However, the budget papers indicate that:• income earned in such trusts will be subject to tax each year;• all withdrawals from the trust (including income already taxed) will be included in computing the income for tax purposes of the recipient;• reclamation costs will continue to be fully deductible at the time incurred; and • contributions, trust earnings, and withdrawals will not be taken into account for the purposes of determining a taxpayer's resource allowance."

In the present study we focuses on developing the poroelasticity model that deals with adsorptioninduced permeability change mostly occurred in porous media constituted several phases such as coal. The underlying pressure induced by adsorption is obtained by Virial expansion form, which is substantially founded on statistical physics. The corresponding thermodynamic pressure applying on the pore surface is then used to detail the pore pressure and further to evaluate the macroscopic volumetric strain and the porosity. In the process of physical adsorption, the adsorbed phase is in thermodynamic equilibrium with the gas phase regardless of pore size, and the corresponding chemical potentials are all equal. The relationship between surface strain and volumetric strain is derived under infinitesimal deformation conditions to gain an explicit formulation of pore surface area with respect to volumetric strain and porosity. After the formulation of surface stress modified by the Langmuir isothermal adsorption is derived, the differential micromechanical constitutive equations of porous media are obtained. By supposing that the ratio of current permeability to initial is equal to the cubic ratio of current porosity to initial porosity, the differential equations for permeability change is consequently derived. The numerical simulations by the present model for permeability change of coal induced by adsorption of CO2 and CH4, respectively, are presented under confined stress conditions. The predictions from the model are good in agreement with the experimental data of sorption-induced permeability change of coals in the literature.

"Sedimentary phosphate ores make up approximately 87% of the world's known reserves and are generally more difficult to beneficiate than igneous ores. In almost all cases, desliming prior to flotation represents the major source of losses. Laboratory studies of selective desliming of sedimentary ores are presented. Some fundamental studies with pure mineral systems are also discussed. Selective desliming, especially using selective flocculation, gave the best performance. Possible industrial applications of this selective flocculation-flotation procedure are discussed.IntroductionPhosphate ores are a major source of raw materials used in inorganic fertilizers (which supply nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium). Approximately 96% of the total world production of phosphate is utilized in the fertilizer industry. Reserves and production data are available in the literature. Today deposits with grades as low as 4% P2O5 are exploited in a few cases. However, in some northern African deposits, ore grades are still as high as 33 - 35% P2O5. Hout pointed out in 1982 that approximately 200 million tonnes of phosphate ore were upgraded by flotation only.Although there is a large number of phosphate minerals (over 300, only those in the apatite series are important ore minerals in phosphate ores. The most common member in this series is fluorapatite – Ca5(PO4)3F. However, in sedimentary phosphate rocks, many different substituents occur in the apatite lattice. This paper will discuss several of the systems and processes that have been developed over the past few years, and are now being utilized by major mining companies on draglines in North America, Australia and South Africa. These technologies include production monitors and reporting systems, GPS navigation systems, structural integrity monitoring systems, structural analysis studies to increase the dragline RSLs, and inspection and response strategies. The use of these technologies provides significant increases in dragline production, and reduces maintenance costs and downtime. The question that needs to be asked is what value is there in monitoring? Increasing dragline productivity is dependent upon to two items with the overall goal being to maximize the number of bank cubic meters moved and to uncover more coal: 1) maximizing payload and 2) maximizing the number of cycles. If you do not measure and try to optimize the parameters that impact payload and number of cycles, there is very little chance that you can improve overall dragline productivity. "Hat Creek coal was treated by the liquid solvent extraction process in a continuous plant at the U.K. National Coal Board Coal Research Establishment.Extraction levels of over 80 per cent dry-mineral-matter-free (dmmf) coal were achieved.Total light oil yield was around 47 per cent of the dmmf coal. The light oil was shown to be a good feedstock for secondary refining into gasoline, jet fuel and diesel fuel.In spite of the high mineral matter content of the coal the solid residue was successfully removed from the coal extract by filtration.IntroductionBritish Columbia Hydro (BCH) and the National Coal Board of Great Britain (NCB) undertook a joint project to test the Hat Creek coal from British Columbia in the NCB's coal liquefaction process designed to produce transport fuels and feedstocks for the chemical industry by the liquid solvent extraction of coal(1), In this process most of the coal is dissolved in an aromatic solvent and the residual solids consisting of mineral matter and undissolved coal are removed by filtration. The resultant coal extract solution is fed to a hydrocracker for conversion to light liquid products and a fraction suitable for recycling as solvent. The light liquid products can be converted to gasoline and diesel fuel in a secondary refining stage.The dissolution of the coal is effected by heat-treating a slurry at a temperature in the region of 400°C which causes some bonds in the coal to rupture with the formation of radicals(2,3). These radicals are stabilized by hydrogen transfer from the hydroaromatic groups in the solvent, resulting in a reduction in the molecular weight of the coal. In the absence of donor groups the radicals combine to form an insoluble high molecular weight product(4). From studies of the kinetics of these reactions it has been shown that the formation and stabilization of the radicals is rapid at temperatures around 400°C(2,3). The dissolution of the depolymerizing coal is, however, relatively slow and the need to ensure complete dissolution in order to achieve a high extraction restricts the selection of digestion time(5). Further, it is important that digests do not contain depolymerizing coal as it may re-form under the applied stress in the filter cake inhibiting flow through the bed and resulting in low filtration rates(6).Thus, in practice relatively long digestion times are generally required in order to ensure complete dissolution of the depolymerizing coal, while it is also important to avoid depletion of the hydrogen donor groups in the solvent which would lower the rate of hydrogen donation to the coal and thus reduce the extraction yield and adversely affect the filtration(7). Clearly it is desirable to optimize the digestion time and temperature with regard to the extraction yield and filtration properties.The precise control of the distribution of products from the hydro-cracker is important for the composition of the recycle process solvent. The principal functions of the solvent are to provide a source of donatable hydrogen and a vehicle for the dissolution of the depolymerizing coal. Hydrogen transfer from the solvent, achieved by the conversion of hydroaromatic to aromatic groups, stabilizes the radicals formed by thermal cleavage of some of the bonds in the coal resulting in a progressive reduction in the size of the coal molecules(8,9) and dissolution in the solvent. The combination of radicals would result in the formation of insoluble material and a reduced extraction yield of the coal(4). Thus to achieve a high extraction yield the solvent should contain sufficient hydrogen donor groups to prevent extensive radical combination. The composition of the solvent should also be controlled to allow dissolution of the depolymerizing coal and to prevent precipitation of this material during the subsequent processing of the coal digest and extract solution. "The Lac Knife graphite deposit was estimated, as part of a feasibility study, using a geostatistical ore reserve estimation method: ordinary kriging. Based on the geology and its interpretation, the results of a variogram study, and the statistical parameters of the grade distribution of the core samples and the composites through the mineralization, the deposit was divided into three separate zones (west, centre and east), and each of these zones was then analyzed and kriged independently.The geological ore reserve estimation results of ordinary kriging are compared to the results of a conventional method (sections) used previously. The two methods gave almost similar reserve figures. The conventional method provided a +2% estimation for tonnage and + 10% for grade because it ignored the spatial relation between sections and samples, and ordinary kriging gave a more accurate longitudinal definition of the deposit.Finally, the paper concludes with the advantages of proceeding with ordinary kriging, namely: higher flexibility (change of cut-off grade), better deposit resolution and enhanced selectivity for the design of the open pit.IntroductionWithin the context of a complete feasibility study for the Société d' Exploration Minière Mazarin Inc., specialists of the Mines and Geology Division of Roche Ltd., Consulting Group, defined a modelling method appropriate to the graphite deposit of the Lac Knife property near Fennont. Many patterns were considered. Based on the geology of this deposit, the planned mining method, the statistical parameters of grade distribution and the variogram study, the process of reserve estimation retained was to use the ordinary kriging in a selective way. It was required because the geometry of the deposit is such that it was unthinkable to apply ordinary kriging without restrictions.This paper gives a detailed explanation of the observations and interrogations which led to the choice of this ore reserve estimation method, and the calculation procedure itself."

Gold has been often used as an alloying component in order to increase or modify the catalytic properties of an active metal. For example, in the hydroconversion of methylcyclopentane, Riahi et al [1] shown that the addition of gold to palladium or platinum enhances the activity which becomes greater than that of the pure metals whereas the selectivity towards products resulting from ring expansion increases. Molenbroek et al [2] presented a detailed study on Ni-Au catalysts which exhibit activity for steam reforming and have been proved to be more resistant toward carbon formation than the pure Ni catalysts. Blocking of highly reactive Ni edge and kink sites by Au atoms is assumed to be the reason for the increased robustness of the Ni-Au catalyst. Nevertheless, the own catalytic properties of pure gold have been almost ignored up to the pioneering work of Haruta et al [3] which demonstrates the high activity of gold for CO oxidation at low temperatures. Other reactions such as WGS reaction, propylene epoxidation or benzene total oxidation have then been shown to be catalyzed by gold [4]. This discovery induced the publication of papers devoted to analyze the different factors controlling the activity of gold catalysts. Among them the most relevant appears to be the gold particle size, the nature of the support [5] and the preparation methods [6]. Clearly distinguish between support and size effect is not straightforward. Indeed, the calcination step often needed to synthesize supported catalysts on different supports, leads to different particle sizes showing that particle size and support are interdependent. To circumvent this difficulty, Au-based supported catalysts have been synthesized by using laser vaporization and low energy cluster beam deposition. The as prepared catalysts have then been characterized and tested in CO oxidation reaction.

Belt conveyor design involves the evaluation of belt tensions, drive selection, pulley configuration and other technical issues. The conveyor belt tensions vary with conveyor layout, drive pulley configuration, belt selection, and idler selection. The decisions for the belt conveyor construction always take all technical, commercial and maintenance issues into consideration. A good conveyor design shall provide required operational features and at the same time be cost effective. The common issues for an engineer to face during belt conveyor design include: (1) Conveyor drive selection ? drive with fluid couplings or variable frequency drives; (2) Drive system configurations - single pulley large drives or dual pulley smaller drives, if intermediate tripper booster drives shall be applied, what power ratio should be adopted for a multi-drive conveyor; (3) Gear reducers ? shaft mount drives, right angle gear reducers or parallel gear reducers; (4) Drive pulley lagging - ceramic lagging or rubber lagging; If ceramic lagging, what type should be used. (5) Conveyor speed variation ? If conveyors run at variable speeds, faster speed/lower percentage loading or slower speed/higher percentage loading. In many cases the decision maker find themselves in a dilemma ? technical benefits vs. financial benefits, capital cost vs. operational cost, and capital and operational cost vs. maintenance effort. Although many conveyor design topics above have been discussed in numerous technical papers and design reference books, management executives and inexperienced engineers may be confused and feel lost. The consultation of people around them may lead to different opinions since experiences tend to vary, making the decision making process complicated. The purpose of this paper is to simplify these complicated issues and provide useful guidelines for belt conveyor design. This paper focuses more on providing simple and practical answers and solutions instead of discussing each topic academically and theoretically in depth.

"Abstract-Geology contributes essential information toward obtaining high-quality resource/reserve estimates. In this context, geology can be considered under the following overlapping topics: regional geology, detailed (deposit) geology, mineralogy, ore deposit models and continuity, with geological mapping being fundamental to all. Each of these topics is considered here in terms of potential contributions to "improved" mineral inventory estimation. Some of the principal conclusions are:1. Regional geological relations must be consistent with deposit geology. It is common that important geological relations are more clearly evident in various regional locales than in highly altered and/or highly deformed mineralized areas containing mineral deposit.2. Detailed geology provides information for a geometric model of a deposit, a model that serves as a basis for mine planning. It is important to distinguish fact from interpretation in such models. Substantial effort is required to characterize the geometric margins of a deposit and the relation of these margins to the simplistic geometric form that normally emerges as an interpretation.3. Mineralogical studies relate to many aspects of deposit evaluation including abundance of ore and deleterious minerals, spatial distribution of ore and deleterious minerals, grain size characteristics of important minerals, mill design, etc.4. Ore deposit models contribute substantially to confidence in developing a three-dimensional geometric model of a deposit for mine planning. Specifically, they are a basis on which to develop rules for interpolation and extrapolation of ore, and they contribute to recognition of domains, each with its own characteristic continuity and margin character.5. Continuity is dependent on mineralization style and may be controlled structurally and/or chemically. It is important to distinguish geological continuity and value continuity. A wide range of classical geological methods are useful in examining geological continuity; value continuity is best viewed as a statistical characteristic that is quantified by any of several measures of autocorrelation."

"Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co. Ltd. (HBM&S) started up a zinc plant and smelter in late 1930, employing technology of that period. The zinc plant has since converted from a roast/leach operation to a two stage pressure leach operation to eliminate sulphur dioxide emissioms. The smelter, however, is still continuing with much of the original roaster/reverberatory furnace technology. This paper reviews the process flow of the copper smelter, with some comments on past and recent changes.Smelter FlowsheetPrior to July 1993, the HBM&S smelter operation consisted of seven areas, namely feed preparation, roasters, reverberatory furnace, converters, anode casting, fuming plant, and dust collection. A simplified smelter flowsheet is shown in Figure 1. The data for tonnage of materials moving through the circuit are presented in Tables I to 4, and are representative of the time period from July 1992 to June 1993. A change in the zinc plant technology in 1993 resulted in the elimination of a zinc-bearing sulphide leach residue from the smelter feed blend, thereby greatly reducing the zinc content of slag produced in the smelter. Consequently the fuming plant and ancillary equipment, such as the drying plant, were shut down. These areas will, however, be described. With the closure of the zinc fuming furnaces all the slag from the reverberatory furnace is now discarded to stockpile.The over-all smelter metal recoveries are 96% for Cu and rn.5010 for Au and Ag. Figures 2 and 4 indicate historical production numbers of copper, silver and gold, respectively. A review of the minor element distribution in the smelter can be found elsewhere."

"For the purpose of this paper, the Chibougamau area is taken as lying between lats. 49°20’ and 50°10’ N;-longs. 73°45’ and 75°30’ W. It comprises an area of some 4,000 square miles and is centred 300 miles north of Montreal.The first recorded report of metal deposits in Chibougamau was that of James Richardson in 1870-71 (I). In 1903 discoveries of asbestos, copper, iron, and gold made by Peter McKenzie stimulated considerable activity in the district. By 1909 interest had become so marked that considerable pressure was brought to bear on the Quebec Government to build a rail-way into the region. It was finally decided to have an authoritative opinion on its economic possibilities, and the Chibougamau Commission was appointed for this purpose (2). They examined the district in 1910 and concluded that at that time a railway was not warranted. Nevertheless, the district continued to be prospected and from time to· time gold and copper discoveries were made. Thus the Merrill Island deposit was discovered in 1920, the Campbell Chibougamau Cedar Bay deposit in 1922, Obalski in 1928, Opemiska Copper in 1929, and Norbeau in 1930.Difficulty of transportation was a severe detriment to the development of the region. Consequently the Quebec Department of Mines completed a road into Chibougamau in 1949. Further activity was encouraged. The Chibougamau Explorers, Quebec Chibougamau Goldfields, and Kayrand deposits were found in 1950. ** The copper-siderite zones on Copper Cliff ground were found in 1952 and 1953. Opemiska Copper, Campbell Chibougamau Mines, and Chibougamau Explorers were encouraged to prepare for production following favourable exploration results."

Copper mining operations have increased in Iran in the past decades due to price increases and potential for creating jobs in developing countries. Iran consists of many copper mines. The mining operations have a positive economic impact on the region, but may also be the cause of adverse environmental effects. Environmental aspects and the health impact of respirable particulates on the communities and agricultural production in the immediate vicinities have been under scrutiny by the regulatory agencies to ensure sustainable development. The impact of an open-pit mine on the air quality and extent of particulate pollutant dispersion in different directions and times is the focus of this paper. The results of the modeling have been validated through ambient air monitoring. Monitoring stations were installed in different areas within the mine unit operations and around it including background areas where PM10 values were 7 µg/m3. Outside the Complex, particulate concentrations were monitored in 9 different stations and up to 25 km distance. Modeling of point, area, and volume sources was conducted using a 9- year meteorological database. The results showed that particulate quantity decreases rapidly below local standard value of 150 µg/m3 at 2.5 km around the mine and the main pollution is due to the crusher and tailings dump areas. Model outputs were compared to the actual values measured by the air quality monitoring network including villages and crop fields. High overall correlation of about 76% was obtained for most of the locations but lower values were reported for more complex terrain in the region. Remedial actions recommended included road water spraying and better management practices to avoid overloading trucks.

"This is a prelirr1inary report on automatic control at East Malartic Gold Mines.After installation of the cyclones in the East Malartic grinding circuit, the interest was aroused in the automatic control system for the circuit. Investigations were made as to the possibilities of such an installation. This resulted in a preliminary survey of the circuit by Milltronics Ltd and an analysis of the circuit by Mines Branch personnel. A study of the investigation and analysis indicated that a cost reduction and improved efficiency could be expected by the installation of an automatic control system in the grinding circuit. It was also indicated tl1at such installation should pay for itself within a year. This was the point that sold management on such installation. The need of three operators was expected to be eliminated .The installation was to consist of a central control panel, microphoncs on each mill, regulation of feed rate, pneumatic valves for addition of solt1tions, density control of the cyclone overflow, which is a grinding circuit product, rod mill feed box plugging detector and a conveyer weightometer for tonnage indication and control.As well as the elimination of one man per sl1ift, other benefits which were to be received but unable to estimate were: 1) More tonnage per clay by operation of the mills at the proper capacities. 2) Lower grinding costs. Less under-loading should result in less steel wear and lower pumping cost. In the condition of overloading, a coarser grind is obtained resulting in greater impeller and liner wear. The overloading and underloading showed up on the n1icropl1oncs. 3) An improvement in the recovery as a result of less over-load. The tailings loss from a coarser grind are not as frequent."

Slagging gasifiers are used to produce chemicals and/or electricity from feedstocks such as coal and/or petroleum coke. A gasifier environment includes pressures from 400 to 1000 psi, temperatures from 1250-1550°C, are cyclic, reducing gases of CO and 112, and molten ash that interacts with the refractory liner materials. The high Cr2O3 refractory liners of gasifiers fail within 3 to 24 months. Gasifier users seek materials with increased reliability and service life. This paper discusses causes of refractory failure and efforts to increase refractory service life.

"This paper has reference in a general way to the region extending from the north shore of lake Buron to the northern limit of the elliptical-shaped area generally known as the Sudbury Basin, and more especially to the district lying south of the Basin (Fig. 3). Attention is concentrated mainly on the structure of the district and, as space does not permit of much geological description, it is assumed that the reader has some knowledge of the general geology. The accompanying table outlines the sequence of the rock formations according to the most recent available information; for further details the interested reader may consult the publications of the various authors mentioned in the paper.STRUCTURE OF THE SEDIMENTARY ROCKS SOUTH OF THE SUDBURY IRRUPTIVEThe rocks south of the Sudbury irruptive, excluding certain intrusives, are, in order from north to south:(1) A band of basic lavas.(2) A band of well-bedded greywackes and quartzites, long termed the McKim greywacke.(3) The Copper Cliff formation, with McKim greywacke' both to the north and south.(4) The Ramsay Lake conglomerate.(5) A thick quartzite formation.All these rocks strike approximately east-northeast, dip steeply south, and generally face south, though there are local exceptions."
