Gold deposits in Eastern China have characteristic of belted distribution. The concentrating belts of gold mineralization are about parallel to the island are belt in Western Pacific Ocean. Gold deposits are mainly concentrated in the aged metamorphic rock series on the upwarping zones and upwarping fault zones, and obviously controlled by the deep fractures and their deriva-tive secondary faults. Gold mineralization had genetic relation to the Mesozoic (especially Yanshan period) magmatic activity. The distribution and genesis of gold deposits can be explained by the assumption of wavy structure. The formation of wavy structure is related to the process of Pacific plate and India plate.

The borehole televiewer is a downhole geophysical logging device that produces continuous, oriented, 360¦ images of the drill hole wall. Two types of borehole images are currently being generated at the BHP Billiton Mount Whaleback deposit. The optical televiewer (OTV) tool captures a ærealÆ image of the borehole wall whereas an acoustic televiewer (ATV) generates an image through variations in physical borehole size, scattering the energy from an acoustic beam. Orientation of the resulting ævirtual coreÆ is derived through magnetometers and accelerometers, providing values within one degree for both inclination and azimuth. Downhole structures such as fractures, joints, foliations and bedding planes are selected directly off the borehole image, recorded and displayed in a 3D modelling package along side adjacent drill holes. Measurements are corrected from apparent to true dip and magnetic to true north. Strata-bound magnetic anomalies are identified and corresponding measurements excluded. The importance of borehole imaging increases substantially with its ability to integrate the OTV and/or ATV data with other forms of lithological and structural data. At Mount Whaleback, the borehole televiewer has been implemented to provide information for geotechnical exploration including structural analysis, lithological characterisation and rock-mass conditions. Within the large area in and around Mount Whaleback, drilling may intersect a number of different geological formations with various rock types and conditions. With the application of the borehole televiewer, reverse circulation drilling can provide information traditionally obtained by diamond drilling.

The physico-chemical property, viscosity, is essential for pyrometallurgical processes and influences the settling rate of valuable metal droplets in slag, affecting the metal recovery. The copper slag from smelting furnaces typically contains between 1 and 2 wt per cent Cu, which equals to or is higher than in most sulfidic copper ores mined today, meaning the slag is a valuable resource for copper extraction. A low viscosity is desirable for slag-cleaning through a settling furnace where entrained droplets settle under gravity. One approach to control the viscosity is through the slag composition. The literature has limited data on the correlation between viscosity, slag structure, and optical basicity of iron silicate slag with FeO/SiO2, CaO, and Al2O3 as factors. Therefore, the present study evaluated the influence of these factors on viscosity and correlations with slag structure and optical basicity. The FeO/SiO2 ratio (at%/at%) and the CaO and Al2O3 content were altered in two levels, resulting in a two-level full factorial design with three factors. The study was done by synthesising FeO–SiO2–Al2O3–CaO–MgO–Cr2O3 melts, followed by water granulation. The melt structure of the samples was analysed with the help of Raman Spectroscopy. The viscosity was then estimated with a high-temperature rheometer using a Mo spindle and crucible. The results showed a correlation between the optical basicity, FeO/SiO2 ratio, and viscosity, where a high optical basicity and FeO/SiO2 ratio were beneficial for achieving a low melt viscosity.

Shear strength testing of rock discontinuity surfaces has been undertaken at a considerable number of open pit gold mining operations in Western Australia, as part of geotechnical studies of pit wall stability. These mining operations are located in geological settings that are typified by highly weathered and/or chemically altered rocks that contain significant structural fabric in which accurate and representative measurement of shear strength is essential.Little of the published rock discontinuity shear test work and back-analysis of failures has been conducted on weathered discontinuity surfaces, at low normal stress levels which are comparable to Western Australian conditions. Available shear strength data are reviewed and the following aspects of shear strength testing are considered:ò the need for shear strength test work and the amount of testing required;ò review of laboratory testing methods and the quality of the results; ò presentation of the test results;ò discussion of the shear strength failure criteria; ò interpretation of the test results;ò summary of test results for a variety of rock types, degree of weathering and discontinuity surface conditions;ò a review of laboratory and field shear strength data to illustrate the amount of variability that can occur; andò a monitoring strategy is proposed to manage the uncertainty associated with discontinuity shear strength.

The tangible effects of leakage are presented graphically, and a technique for quantifying the leakage characteristics of a ventilation column using the æSolveÆ capabilities of a common spreadsheet is demonstrated. A case study of a working decline in Western Australia is used to demonstrate the potential for more realistic design of development ventilating systems, and for more cost effective management of the condition of the duct.

Many open pit mining operations seek to control blasting-related movement of ore and waste to minimise loss and dilution. Tracking the movement of ore boundaries can result in the maximisation of ore recovery and minimisation of waste sent to the mill, thereby optimising the economic performance of the operation.A novel solution for tracking the ore–waste boundary location before and after a blast uses subsurface markers placed along the boundary with all measurements and scans conducted remotely from the blast block. Upon system activation, user-operated equipment on the surface determines the three-dimensional (3D) location of the subsurface markers.The patented system concept combines two electromagnetic mechanisms, magnetic positioning and radio frequency through-rock communications to enable remote battery-powered markers, buried within the rock to be accurately located in 3D space.Field trials at a quarry have demonstrated the system can comfortably handle over 100 subsurface markers with a complete scan, including set-up, taking less than an hour. Location accuracy for each marker in 3D space is better than 0.5 m at a range up to 50 m from the magnetic source, and the system has an overall operational range in excess of 75 m.CITATION:Blay, K R, Spathis, A T and Leslie, K E, 2015. FerrAus Ltd's Robertson Range and Davidson Creek Projects are located in the Hamersley Province about 100 km east of Newman, Western Australia. Significant iron mineralisation defined by an aggressive exploration program within the Marra Mamba Iron Formation is shallowly north dipping at Davidson Creek, and mainly shallowly east dipping at Robertson Range, forming part of a regional scale anticline with the granitic and greenstone basement of the Sylvania Inlier as its core. With minor exceptions, the stratigraphy is comparable with that seen in the main Hamersley Basin. Granite and greenstone basement rocks of the Sylvania Inlier are unconformably overlain by shales and volcanic rocks of the Fortescue Group. The overlying Hamersley Group is locally represented by interbedded chert, banded iron-formation (BIF) and shales of the Marra Mamba Iron Formation (Nammuldi, MacLeod and Mount Newman Members), and dolomites, cherts, BIF and shales of the Wittenoom Formation. Iron enrichment occurs predominantly in the Mount Newman Member, and to a lesser extent in the West Angela Member of the Wittenoom Formation. Enrichment varies from 20 - 30 m in thickness in elongate bodies up to 3 km in strike length, and generally thins down dip. At Davidson Creek iron mineralisation is a haematite-goethite-ochreous goethite assemblage, while at Robertson Range this assemblage is consistently overprinted by a later, goethitic alteration related to 'hardcap' weathering. Near surface hardcap alteration in both project areas comprises more siliceous, aluminous and vitreous goethite. Initial exploration completed by Rio Tinto Exploration between 1999 and 2001 indicated the potential for about 20 Mt of iron mineralisation at Robertson Range. Since 2005 a detailed exploration program undertaken by Australian Manganese Pty Ltd (a wholly owned subsidiary of FerrAus Ltd) has defined a global indicated and inferred resource totaling 164.4 Mt at 58.6 per cent Fe (ASX: FRS 17 April 2009).

Mining operations have large power requirements. The biggest consumers of energy are the drives for the mills located in the concentrators. Assuming that the decision is made on how many mills are needed and how big these mills will be, it can be determined how these mills should be driven. The decision as to which drive should be applied depends on design limits for different mechanical or electrical drives, anticipated operation modes, capital expenditure optimisation and lifecycle cost optimisation.The task for the engineer specifying the drive equipment is to select a drive solution that can debottleneck the operation, avoid interruption of production and enhance the reliability of the process. At the same time, the engineer must choose a design that enables cost optimisation either in a single investment or in relation to the total cost of ownership (TCO).This paper outlines different mechatronic or electric drive alternatives for tube or horizontal mills applied in the mining industry, along with their advantages and disadvantages. The presence of unfavourable geological structures such as faults and dykes often can contribute to coal burst risk. Seismic events associated with rock fractures tend to cluster around these structures and it is important to understand the characteristics of seismicity for coal burst risk management. In an Australian underground longwall coalmine, two clusters of seismic activities close to the longwall face and within a section of the maingate roadway which was intersected by a major dyke were respectively identified. The induced seismicity in the dyke-roadway area was closely related to the longwall mining. These seismic events were located and the distribution of seismic events shows that more fractures were distributed on the inbye side of the dyke. The spatial-temporal changes of the seismic event locations delineate the fracture propagation as the longwall mined through the dyke. The frequency-magnitude relationship of seismicity was analysed and it was found that it changed significantly when the longwall was mining towards, through and past the dyke. The monitoring results demonstrate that because of the stiff dyke, the seismicity was intensified in the roadway section. It proves that the dyke promoted stress re-distribution and seismicity in its vicinity. More fractures were induced in the hanging wall of the dyke, whereas less strain energy was accumulated and released in the footwall of the dyke.

Viscosities of CaO-aluminosilicate ternary melts were estimated using a structure-based model. The model considers depolymerisation effects and related breakdown of the silicate network structure on the addition of metal oxides to the melts. The predicted values are in good agreement with the experimental values over the whole temperature and composition range.

The Pajingo gold operation in Queensland is approximately 50 kilometres south of Charters Towers and 134km south-west of Townsville. The resource was discovered in 1983 and first open pit gold production began in 1986. The mine traditionally employed a bottom-up sequence – a combination of modified and traditional Avoca methods with run-of-mine waste backfill. This practice caused many high-grade crown pillars to be left in place, yet accessible. In recent years, these crown pillars have been extracted by injection grouting of rockfill. This process facilitated blind up-hole open stoping. To date, thirteen separate injection campaigns have been completed, of which ten were deemed successful. In general, the two key technical difficulties in this mining technique are: maintaining a consistent high-quality ground consolidation of the rock fill material; and controlling the drill and blast practices during stoping. Here, effective drill-and-blast control was found to be essential to achieve the dual aims of 100% extraction, and maximum sill pillar stability to minimise dilution. During stoping, the technical performance of the consolidated rock-fill was recorded; both to verify the design, and to identify operational improvements. The results showed that Pajingo has realised both reduced production down-time through use of early strength gain grout, and more rapid and thorough grout consolidation through changes to the emplacement method. The optimisation of consolidated rock fill has led to several quantifiable benefits to the mine, including: profitable extraction of previously sterilised crown pillars resulting in both increased ore reserves and production profile; improvements to the stability of grouted stope crowns, thereby reducing safety and production related; risks associated with open up-hole stopes; reduction in cost and time constraints, with respect to the grouting of loose fill; and reduction in grout curing time – from 14 days to 8 days – thereby minimising production down-time. This paper is a case study of the evolution and optimisation of the up-hole open stoping mining method at Pajingo. The challenges and successes are discussed in terms of their key mining outcomes. Colliery spoil is the major constituent of colliery spoil 'rockpaste' which has been used to infill abandoned limestone mines in the West Midlands of England since the early-1980s. The other constituents of rockpasle are pulverised fuel ash, lime and water. A key property of the rockpaste is its ability to flow within the mine workings over considerable distances before setting. This paper describes the work carried out to identify suitable sites as sources of colliery spoil for making rockpaste and goes onto consider the flow properties of the material and the monitoring methods used on-site. A full-scale trial comprising mulling a 6600 nt' section of an abandoned mine was conducted prior to the mulling of the Littleton Street Mine which had a volume of about 500 000 m'. As well as describing the methods used for monitoring the movement of rockpaste material, a description is also given of a dip-meter developed specifically for the purpose of measuring the level of paste in the mine. This paper shows how a colliery spoil based paste has been successfully rued for infilling abandoned mine workings. The monitoring systems developed for use in the two case studies presented in this paper are now being used extensively for infilling other abandoned mine workings. To-date over I I mines with a total volume exceeding two million cubic metres have been backfilled.

A new procedure has been developed for the direct determination of metals loaded on activated carbon. It involves preparation of a suspension of the powdered carbon in water, followed by direct sampling of the suspension with a micropipette,and analyses by atomic absorption spectroscopy using carbon rod atomization. Advantages of the method include the simplicity of sample preparation and the ability to provide a complete metal analysis in 1 - 2 hours. This enables carbon-in-pulp operators to respond quickly to changes in plant efficiency arising from carbon fouling. The successful application of the method has been demonstrated for gold, copper, nickel and iron. Other elements to be surveyed include calcium, magnesium and silicon.

Fluid circulation occurs in oceanic crust of all ages, at the seafloor spreading axis, on mid-ocean ridge flanks, in the ocean basins, and in subduction zones. In the first three settings the fluid originates as seawater. At the axis and on the ridge flanks, the circulating seawater produces a major chemical exchange between the oceans and the crust. Based on heat budget constraints, between 10 and 40% of the river flux of Mg can be taken up during high-temperature alteration of the basaltic crust along the mid-ocean ridge axis. Most of the hydrothermal -heat loss, however, occurs on the mid-ocean ridge flanks, where the temperatures are lower and the seawater flux correspondingly larger. The estimated heat loss on the flanks is so large that upwelling must occur over a large fraction (5-30%) of the seafloor less than 65 Ma in age, at seepage velocities on the order of 10 to 100 cm/yr. The circulating seawater need lose less than 1 to 2% of its Mg content in order to solve the Mg mass balance for the oceans. Fluids in subduction zones are commonly less saline than seawater and are rich in methane and other light hydrocarbons. These fluids may originate by dewatering of the downgoing slab. If so, they may close the geochemical cycle of H2O that began with hydration of the basaltic crust at the ridge axis.

Sampling of grain, animal feeds (solid and liquid) including important mineral mixtures in the Danish agricultural sector is subject to an ongoing investigation with the objective of improving existing (suboptimal) sampling procedures. Results from the first six months are presented here; the project will continue for two more years and will include international collaborators (Australia and Canada). The Danish authorities have instituted a system of control analysis, which contains a set of mandated sampling and analysis methods. From a preliminary survey it was concluded that in fact all of the existing sampling procedures are not optimised in the light of Pierre GyÆs Theory of Sampling (TOS).

Kidston Gold Mines, located in semi-arid North Queensland, Australia is currently in its closure phase. Highly innovative and comprehensive rehabilitation strategies were employed at the site, including the direct revegetation of the surface of the tailings storage; the construction of a tailings sediment entrapment pond; the construction of a spillway to drain large rainfall events from the surface of the tailings; the construction of store/release covers over the tops of the waste rock dumps; the sheeting with oxide waste rock of the waste rock dump slopes; the partial back-filling of the initial Wises Hill Pit with waste rock and thickened tailings produced from the subsequent Eldridge Pit; the partial flooding of Eldridge Pit following the end of mining; and the construction of wetland systems to treat contaminated tailings and waste rock dump seepage. These closure strategies involved the careful consideration of water management. Specific water management issues included understanding the water balance of the tailings dam; the operation of the tailings dam sediment entrapment pond and spillway; understanding the water balance of the store/release waste rock dump covers; the importance and sustainability of vegetation on the tailings, store/release waste rock dump covers, and on the sheeted waste rock dump slopes; the level and quality of water in the partially flooded Eldridge Pit; and the treatment of contaminated seepage in the constructed wetlands. The seasonal and highly variable rainfall experienced in this semi-arid climate posed a number of challenges for the management of water on the site post-closure. The paper details these challenges and highlights how they were resolved over the period leading up to and following the end of mining.

One of the earliest and continuing challenges in driving sustainable development in large scale resource industry projects is around the issue of assessment û how do you measure the sustainability of a mineral operation? One of the key road blocks when confronted with this challenge is the temptation of technical folks to reach for a definition of sustainability or sustainable development. But definitions, by definition, have boundaries and limitations that serve to constrain thinking û they limit the thinking of what we can achieve with sustainability (it also acts as a barrier that constrains innovation). Rather than seeking definitions, better understanding of the core perspectives around sustainability and their application to the minerals industry provides a much more powerful platform from which to conduct assessments. But it is only when these perspectives are combined with the right framework and supporting techniques that the complex becomes doable. With the support of the perspectives and the framework, various assessment and measurement methodologies can be used; the challenge is communicating to stakeholders the sustainability character of the project in ways that are meaningful and to which people can connect. Assessment is not about finding the best or most accurate methods that fulfil strictly academic and possibly abstract requirements. The challenge is to help people understand what the impacts are, and what the value contributions will be, in a format and language that make sense in their world-view.

Orepasses are a critical element in the transport of ore from the stope drawpoint to the surface ore stockpile, making them an integral part of an underground mine’s ore-handling system. Well-designed and operated orepasses improve productivity and lower operating costs over a long period of time.The Olympic Dam mine, as part of a 6 Mt/a expansion project in 1997, constructed a large network of orepasses feeding a rail haulage system to facilitate the movement of approximately 8 Mt/a to the Clark crusher and hoisting shaft. The orepass network comprises 14 orepasses and currently includes 59 individual tip points. The orepass network has been in operation for over 15 years and in excess of 110 Mt of ore has been moved through the system.Olympic Dam’s management of mine infrastructure includes a program of assessing the condition of the Clark system orepasses. A comprehensive program was initiated in 2011 and consisted of systemically performing volumetric surveys to determine the integrity of the various sections of the orepasses. The current geometrical state of the orepasses provides essential information for comparison of geotechnical and operational parameters and a baseline for understanding the key causes of orepass deterioration to assist in the planning of both usage and potential replacement options.The collection of geotechnical and operating data allowed the review of the current condition, potential longevity and associated risks with the various orepass sections. The Palaeoproterozoic Warramunga Formation is notable as the host to the enigmatic, so-called 'Tennant Creek style' mineralisation. These polymetallic (but mainly Au-Cu-Bi) ore deposits typically have a close spatial association with massive ironstone bodies, and frequently also with banded ironstone, known locally as 'haematite shale'. The Warramunga Formation is a polydeformed, turbiditic succession. Partial, or complete Bouma sequences variously comprising lithic arenite, wacke, siltstone, and mudstone constitute a classic flysch sequence deposited as a proximal (sandstone lithofacies) to distal (siltstone lithofacies) fan association. The Warramunga Formation has a substantial component of volcanic detritus and has generally been attributed to an essentially contemporaneous volcanic provenance. However, lithostratigraphic revision (Donnellan, Hussey and Morrison, in press) apparently precludes outcropping volcanic rocks of the Tennant Creek Block, or indeed Inlier, as the source of detritus. Warramunga Formation geochemistry indicates rapid derivation from a fractionated, predominately felsic igneous source (Palaeoproterozoic upper crust) with a minimum of chemical weathering; together with an admixture of mafic material. Warramunga Formation geochemistry cannot, however, be reconciled with that of the Bemborough Formation, which is here taken to be representative of Flynn Subgroup felsic volcanic rocks. Similarly, the Warramunga Formation is geochemically distinct from Flynn Subgroup sedimentary rocks. Geochemistry of the banded ironstone is consistent with its interpretation as Dine-grained turbidites.

When times are tough in the mineral industry û as they have been for some time û typical responses by mining companies are to cut costs and/ or increase production. The latter is seen to spread fixed costs, thereby also reducing unit costs per tonne mined. However, most mineral deposits respond to increased production rates by lowering ore grades, so the reduction in cost per tonne of ore does not necessarily result in a reduced cost per unit of metal produced. The authorsÆ experience is that this process often leads to a mine plan that is a long way from optimal. Producing to the point where marginal cost equals marginal revenue may work well in a manufacturing operation, but it is not necessarily the best strategy for a mining company with a depleting resource. Variations in tonnage and grade with depth, ore reserve optimism and a variety of other factors conspire to produce variations in production rates and grade that often result in suboptimal outcomes and potential mine failure. Added to this is the focus of industry analysts and senior corporate management on such measures as unit costs and ounces in reserves. This is perceived to have the perverse effect of driving the share price down when strategies are adopted that actually improve the value of the mining operation, and vice versa! Many mine failures can be prevented by a close examination of the tonnage grade curve and an understanding of how margins, net cash flows and resulting business risk change with cut-off grades and rates of production. A few relatively simple analyses early in the evaluation of a project can demonstrate the tradeoffs between the main decision parameters, leading to right-sizing of the operation. Once major commitments to major capital items have been made, and reserves have been publicly reported, optimisation of the operation becomes much more difficult than if it had been done earlier. Such investigations can also identify the upside potential and downside risks associated with factors outside the companyÆs control. Many strategies that may enhance value in the good times significantly increase the downside risk in the bad times. What is often called risk analysis typically looks at superficial issues, and does not evaluate the major factors leading to the potential for financial disaster. This paper illustrates some of these major risks, and demonstrates how they may be fully evaluated so that corporate decision makers can make fully informed decisions that take account of the real risks.
