500 Folsom Street is part of the new Transbay neighborhood in San Francisco, which is being redeveloped after the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake damaged a freeway viaduct; removal of the viaduct created parcels of land available for development. The development consists of a 42-story residential tower with a six-level basement. The slender, core-only structure was designed using performance-based seismic design. Subsurface conditions include undocumented fill, Dune sand, marsh deposits, sand, and clay, all overlying sloping bedrock of the Franciscan Formation. The building is supported on a 10-foot-thick mat foundation approximately 62 to 72 feet below street grades; clay, sand, and bedrock are all present at mat subgrade. Under a portion of the mat, sand susceptible to liquefaction was present. The variable subgrade conditions and potential for ground failure, along with the depth of mat subgrade below street grade, created a challenge for the design and construction team to solve. The ground below mat subgrade needed to be improved to mitigate the liquefaction potential and provide more uniform support. The areal extent and depth of ground improvement necessary to support the mat with an acceptable amount of deformation was determined. Settlement was analyzed and subgrade moduli were provided for design of the mat, with multiple iterations performed to converge between the geotechnical and structural models. Based on the project schedule and logistics, it was beneficial to work from street grade to improve the ground. In order to target the depths below the mat and minimize wasted effort and materials within the depth of excavation, grids of jet grouting were determined to be the most economical ground improvement method; however, it was challenging to install the columns from 65 feet above the top of the target zone. During installation, QA/QC was performed to check that the jet-grouted columns were installed to the design depth and diameter and developed the design strength.

This publication contains analyses and related source data for 310 natural gas samples from wells and pipelines in 16 States. All of the samples were obtained and analyzed during calendar year 1978 as a part of Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis appara¬tus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4862/ and 576.3/ The results of the investigation of the occurrences of helium are published annually to make the information available as soon as possible to the gas industry and the public in general. Twenty previous publications have presented the results of 11,573 gas analyses made prior to 197R. The first three, Bulletins 486,4/ 576,5/ and 617,6/ contain analyses and related source data on 5,218 gas samples collected from 1917 through 1960. The other 17

ERP systems have been widely implemented nowadays in several industries. However, ERP was originally designed to fit former MRP and MRP II users, and most of the ERP research has been focused on discrete manufacturing . On the other hand, process industries ? and mining in particular ? present many peculiar characteristics, which are difficult to comply with ERP systems standard functionalities. Again, very limited research has been developed covering enterprise management systems in mining. The objective of this paper is to identify, through an explanatory study that includes a case study methodology, how ERP systems manage the functional areas of the mining industry, and how they fit into the mineral value chain IT requirements. A secondary objective is to identify the gaps between ERP?s functional capabilities and the mining industry business requirements, and to point out the perceived benefits they generate to the companies.

The minerals industry in Australia is currently regarded as the country's economic saviour; the bastion of economic security. As Fitzgerald (1974) stated, 'Australia's natural endowments in minerals are the envy of most countries of the world'. As a result the proposed new mineral developments are on a scale that hitherto in the sixties would have been completely un-envisaged. It is reported that Australia is poised on the verge of a 16 billion dollar mining-based investment boom: a boom that will see Australia dominate the energy export field, the mineral processing field, and create the 'coal dollar'. This growth scenario has many inherent dangers, and it is the authors' contention that these should be carefully considered before further development proceeds. Two of the major problems related to the mineral industry growth scenario are the predictability of the future metal market, and the energy cost of mining. The latter problem is the one discussed here. The mining-mineral processing industries in Australia currently use about 36 per cent of Australia's primary energy budget. This large energy input is dominated by two major industries, iron and steel and the rapidly developing a1uminium industry. These two combined use over 20 per cent of the total Australian energy budget. In an industry which is export oriented about 96 per cent as expressed in ex-mine value terms û much of the energy input is exported along with the product. The authors therefore urge that serious consideration by the mineral industry be given to the relatively high energy intensiveness of process operations, especially in respect of the aluminium industry.

IF a straight line should be drawn on the map (See 1, page 96) through the northern half of the South Island of New Zealand, from Mt. Domett in the north to Arthur's Pass in the south, and another line drawn parallel to it and at a distance of ten miles to the west, according to the topographic scale, it will be found that within the belt thus drawn across the country all the most important mines, past and present, of the South Island are situated, with the exception of a few in Otago.The most important product of this tract being gold, and Reefton, the most important southern mining field, being situated at about its central portion, the zone may aptly be termed "The Great Reefton Gold Belt." The occurrence of so many gold mines along this particular strip of country is not at all a matter of chance, but is the outcome of cause and effect. Regulatory processes associated with development of major mining operations in Alaska and British columbia were evaluated using specific case studies. Included were one hard rock mine in Alaska (Red Dog Mine), one hard rock mine In British Columbia (Snip Mine), and one offshore gold dredging project in Alaska (WestGold SIMA). Based on a comparison of the three case studies, it became clear that the primary incentives for cost effective permitting are: 1) early and continuing coordination of proposed project plans, designs and schedules with key regulatory agencies and local area residents and 2) development of a sufficient level of baseline information on air quality, water quality, wetlands, endangered species, fish and wildlife, and socia-cultural conditions to support the required permit application. The U.S. permitting process worked in much the same way as the Canadian permitting process. Disincentives of mine permitting include high initial costs for baseline data gathering. However, a relatively high early investment resulted in more efficient permit acquisition and reduced long-term monitoring requirements. A common problem Identified was the inadequate supply of trained agency personnel with the requisite technical and permitting experience. This sometimes resulted in poor decisions and unnecessary changes in project plans and schedules.

Collins Radio Company, through this contract with the Bureau of Mines, has conducted a System Study of Coal Mine Communi¬cations. The program was a three phase program to establish a data base, perform communication system analysis and optimi¬zation, and prepare equipment specifications to be included in this final report. At the start of establishing a data base both a knowledge of mine communication and coal mines in general was obtained. Communication system requirements and constraints were determined along with a survey of current and potential mine communication equipment. An investigation was completed concerning theoretical LF and VLF propagation characteristics, and UHF propagation tests were conducted in a working coal mine. Different mines were contacted and on-site surveys completed with respect to coal mine communication requirements.

Taking the third meridian as the eastern boundary of proved payable auriferous country, there is a stretch of country, nearly 600 miles in width, in which no appreciable amount of gold has yet been discovered. Many prospectors have attempted to .penetrate or traverse it, but comparatively few have thought it worth while proceeding with the examination.The desolate stretch of waterless desert-the very few and insignificant outcrops through the sand and the almost total absence of feed for horses have, combined, presented such a barrier as to preclude prospecting. The few who have traversed the country are eloquent in denunciation, yet their investigations, necessarily hurried, are not quite satisfactory. The absence of water utterly debars a thorough examination being made. Gold may exist in quantity, yet it would have to be extraordinarily plentiful to render its obtaining profitable. Too fantastic is the idea of its ever being a mining district; shifting sand to traverse, utter absence of wood and water render the notion absurd. Likely looking belts occur, but these in all "cases are small and remote from water. Gold has been obtained from likely look ing quartz reefs, but only by fire assay, and then but a few do to the ton. Without wishing to be pessimistic, I would unhesitatingly declare that east of the third meridian, and between the parallels 25 and 30 degrees in West Australia, there is no gold in payable quantities.

A critical safety component for all underground mining is intrinsic and standing support systems. Specifically, tabular hardrock mining exploits a wide variety of deposits that require various methodologies to safely mine the ore material. Several new support systems have been developed in recent years for hard rock applications which have been modified or applied in a variety of ground control applications. These include prestressing devices, improved cribs, and free standing supports. Various standing support and prop-type systems have been designed for hardrock applications with seismic loading conditions to accept prestressing. The prestressing, using water-filled cells, creates an active load upon installation and is considered essential to maintain support during and after the blasting of the mine faces. Heavy seismic activity is also present in these mines and the prestressing units can provide some energy absorption capability to help preserve the integrity of the support. This paper presents an overview of these innovations in support technology.

So many emergencies that crop up in mining necessitate a departure from ordinary methods that the writer has been led to illustrate a few of the examples that have come under his notice during a somewhat lengthy career; and as most of the methods illustrated are certainly outside the ordinary, it may be hoped that while to many they may convey little that is new, to the larger number some acceptable information may be gleaned whenever the occasion calls for it. Experience has shown that there can be no hard and fast rule in mine timbering that will fit the varying- necessities of different localities, and the engineer must divest his mind of all prejudices that his practice of any particular system or systems may have induced, and must direct his attention to the character of the local timber and its fitness or otherwise for the purpose he has in view. Fortunate indeed are the man and mine that can claim an abundance of good and cheap mining timber it simplifies, oftentimes, what would be, under unfavourable timber conditions, a difficult problem. In many parts of the States there is either none or at best a scrub if the latter, he has to either pigstye, balk, or bulkhead, if his ground will permit; if, not, and the necessary timber has to be imported, then some system of recovering his timber and using it over and over again may be possible. Keywords: ferrovanadium, thermodynamics, phosphorus Recyclable material is rapidly gaining in importance as a source of raw materials in industrialized countries. This is also the case in the production of ferrovanadium, where, increasingly, materials such as discarded capacitors, spent catalysts, slag, dust and sludge are used. As the V-content in the raw material varies greatly, the demands on process technology are very high. The share of perturbing elements depends very much on the source of the raw materials, which, in turn, makes a corresponding optimization of the various refining steps necessary. The raw materials are mostly available as oxides, which means that carbon, silicon or aluminium are used as reducing agents. Thermodynamic calculations were used to show especially the behavior of vanadium and phosphorus at different process conditions.

In this Bureau of Mines investigation, conditions were determined to form an iron sulfide adherent coating with a metallic golden luster on steel upon anaerobic heat treatment with sulfur. The sulfide formation rate was determined in the temperature range of 105° to 500° C with reaction times up to 68 hours. The optimum temperature and time to form an adhering decorative coating on mild steel was in the range of 105° C for about 70 hours to 285° C for 1 hour. The golden coating consisted of an inner layer of pyrrhotite and an outer layer of pyrite. At temperatures higher than about 300° C, the outer layer thickness decreased owing to the decomposition of pyrite to pyrrhotite.. Small quantities (<0.5 wt-pct) of petroleum oil accelerated the sulfide growth rate. The sulfide coating decreased the corrosion rate of steel in a neutral aqueous medium by a factor of two. The dissolution of pyrite in water was dependent on particle size and surface area with the flat pyrite coatings exhibiting the lowest dissolution rate.

Introduction The Cannon mine at Wenatchee, WA has recently been brought into operation to recover gold from the sandstones of the Swauk formation. The mine is a joint venture between Asamera Minerals (US) Inc. and Breakwater Resources. A tailings impoundment was constructed to impound 2.7 to 3.6 Mt (3 to 4 million st) of tailings at 1.8 kt/a (2000 stpd) over about five years. This paper describes the design and construction of the impoundment. In particular, it describes the 100 m (300 ft) high earthfill embankment that is the main feature of the facility. Project environment The project is located on the outskirts of Wenatchee, a town of about 40,000 people. The town is situated on the flat alluvial terraces beside the Columbia River. The Cascade Mountains rise from the terraces in a series of ridges and valleys. The mine is at the foot of the Cascades. The tailings impoundment is in one of the steep valleys. The climate is mild and dry (Table 1). Site selection Twelve alternative sites within a 16-km (10-mile) radius of the mine were examined. Decision making theory was used to select the most suitable site. Advantages of the chosen site include its proximity to the mine and its low visibility from points of common public access. Also, the area was already heavily impacted by an existing silica quarry. The major disadvantage of the site is the need to pump tailings over a distance of 1.5 km (1 mile) and against a static head of 200 m (655 ft). Also, it is located in a gulch just upstream from the town of Wenatchee. Site geology The impoundment is generally underlain by interbedded sandstones and siltstones. The siltstones are often shattered. The sandstones are often friable. Both rock types are extensively jointed. Some isolated faulting of the sediments occurred before the area was covered with basalt flows. About 10,000 years ago, at the end of the ice age, the basalts were covered by 3 to 10 m (10 to 33 ft) of wind blown loess - a fine sandy clay and silt. River deposits filled the base of the valley to depths between 5 and 25 m (16 and 82 ft). Under the main part of the embankment, these materials were removed to expose bedrock. Ground water flow is generally through the more permeable layers. The permanent water table is about 5 m (16 ft) beneath the ground surface. A method for the detection and analysis of tin in cassiterite ores is discussed. An empirical relationship was established between the tin content of an ore sample and the percentage absorption that this sample produced in a Mossbauer experiment. The time taken to complete an assay with this method is much less than with any of the methods currently in use. The equipment can be adapted readily for use in the field.

Companhia Vale do Rio Dote - CVRD is the largest mining company in Brazil and the largest iron ore producer in the world. Serra Geral Mine (SGM) is located at Iron Quadrangle of the State of Minas Gerais, approximately 80 kilometers from Belo Horizonte. Hematite and Itabirite are the two main minerals. A blasting with a spherical charge has been introduced at Serra Geral Mine, an iron ore producer in Brazil, belongs to the CVRD (51%) Kawasaki Steel Corporation (24.5%) others (24.5%), in order to improve fragmentation, as well, load, transportation and crushing productivity. This paper will present the results of a successful blast design with a spherical charge carried out by Serra Geral Mine, the Department of Mining Engineering at Escola de Minas - Federal University of Ouro Preto-UFOP associated to a Blasting Engineering Consultant. The results obtained in the field tests and how it was possible to increase the blast pattern in 53%, which allowed one reduction around 31% in the cost of blasting operation in the Serra Geral Mine, will be discussed in details.

An electromagnetic (EM) system for the location of trapped mine workers at coal-mine (300 m) depths has been developed. The use of such a system in deep mines (1-km depth) requires transmission at extremely low frequencies (ELF) and a reduction in the effective noise level beyond that which can be obtained by acceptable Integration times. Automatic-noise-cancellation (ANC) techniques reduce the effective noise level by combining several received signals that contain correlated noise. Such signals can be obtained either from a remote magnetic antenna or a local electric antenna. During Phase III of this program, real ELF noise data were acquired and used to test the ANC algorithms developed during Phase II. The ELF noise data were obtained from analog recordings made by Develco under another Bureau-of-Mines contract. Digitization was accomplished by an ND converter that was added to a GMRR computer. Phase III tasks Included preparation of software for digitization, computer-computer communication, data processing, and statistical analysis. Useable data were obtained from eleven half-hour tapes containing noise from one axis of the primary antenna and three axes of the remote antenna. The overall average Improvement in SNR was 4.1 dB. However, the average Improvements for the Individual X, Y, and Z axes were 4.2, 11.9, and -1.9 dB, which roughly follow the observed noise power. Nonlinear processing was not effective with this noise.

Leaching of manganese from low-grade Minnesota ores was studied over the temperature range 25° to 225° C at atmospheric and elevated pressures to demonstrate that good recoveries of manganese could be achieved from unroasted ores using reagents available nearby. Various combinations of ore, pyrite, lignite derivatives, and sulfuric acid were tested on a small scale. Pyrite alone required the highest temperature to effect a good extraction, but the combination of pyrite, lignite char, and sulfuric acid solubilized 99 percent of the manganese after 30 minutes of reaction at 75° C.

This paper enumerates various difficulties encountered in the design and construction of deep caisson foundations for the Second Bassein Creek Bridge constructed over a creek with very difficult site conditions. The designer of the bridge had anticipated the problems associated with the construction of large diameter floating caissons and limited the maximum size of caisson to 12.5m O.D. facilitated by the means of Shock Transmission Units (STUs). This is the first road bridge in India where STUs are installed to distribute seismic horizontal loads among piers installed with fixed and unidirectional bearings. Besides the usual difficulties of tilts, shifts, and sinking in the construction of floating caissons, the paper also describes a novel methodology used to retrieve a circular 12.5m O.D. caisson which had been swept away during a storm and stuck into the creek bed.
