In a recent paper by Smith and Wen(1) the adsorption of sodium dodecylsulfate and trimethyldodecylammonium chloride on kaolinite was studied. As would be expected considering the general negative character of kaolinite, except perhaps at quite' acid pH values (2,3,4), it was found that trimethyldodecylammonium chloride adsorbed strongly on kaolinite at basic pH values. Furthermore, it was found that sodium dodecylsulfate adsorbed strongly on kaolinite at acid pH values, particularly at initial 1H values below pH 3 (final pH values near pH 4). It is interesting to note that adsorption of the anionic surfactant was strong under conditions where the kaolinite was apparently slightly negatively charged (2). The present paper reports on an extension of the work by Smith and Wen. In this paper the effects of the presence of dodecyl alcohol and sodium hexametaphosphate on adsorption of sodium dodecylsulfate and trimethyldodecylammonium chloride on kaolinite are considered.

The seismic refraction technique is probably the most popular geophysical method of bedrock profiling in geotechnical site investigations but is somewhat restricted by the inherent assumptions in the method. This paper describes how Hales' method of profile interpretation is modified to overcome the assumptions of increasing velocity and layer thickness with depth when only first arrival data is available. A further expansion of Hales method enables presentation of refraction data in a form whereby bedrock features, such as changes in velocity, relief and dip in particular, are more readily recognized. Characteristic curves of the more common bedrock features are presented as an aid to bedrock feature recognition.

The mining industry is a major consumer of rock anchors in the United States. Due to the high humidity in the underground coal-mining environment, the rock anchors corrode and lose their load bearing capacity, which, in turn, reduces the life expectancy of the ground support. This creates operational difficulties and a number of safety concerns (Li and Linblad, 1999). Research on rock anchor corrosion has not been adequate in the past and the effects of several factors in the mine atmosphere and waters are not clearly understood. One of the probable reasons for this lack of research may be attributed to the time required for gathering meaningful data. Underground water samples from different mines in the Illinois coal basin were collected and the major chemical content was analyzed and used for laboratory testing. The corrosion performance of the different commercial rock anchors was investigated by techniques such as laboratory immersion tests in five different corrosion chambers and potentiodynamic polarization tests in simulated ground waters based on the Illinois coal basin. The tensile strengths were measured for the selected rock anchors taken every three months from the salt spray corrosion chambers maintained at different pH values and temperatures. The corrosion potential, corrosion current and the corresponding corrosion rates of the #5, #6, #6 epoxy-coated and #7 forged-head rebar steels, #6 and #7 threaded-head rebar steels were measured in the pHs of 5 and 8 at room temperature. The open circuit potential (OCP) readings of the different rock anchors were recorded in three selected underground coal mines (A, B & C) in the Illinois coal basin and the data compared with the laboratory electrochemical tests for analyzing the life of the rock anchors installed in the mines with respect to corrosion current measured.

With the goal of improving the strength characteristics of pneumatically emplaced material used for localized subsidence control, the binding additives: fly ash, bentonite, and Portland Cement, were examined for their effect on the support capabilities of coal refuse. It was found that, within certain concentration ranges, all three of them offered some increase in the ultimate strength of the backfilling mixture; however, Portland Cement gave the greatest percentage increases. Selection of the appropriate backfilling mixture will allow for the most economical and efficient subsidence control when pneumatic stowing is employed.

Kwanyin Tunnel is presently the longest (7.7 km) railway tunnel in Taiwan. Due to heavy railway traffic, a pass-by station will be built inside the tunnel to increase the traffic flow. Since the concentration of toxic gases released by the locomotives may reach dangerous levels, a research program was conducted for the purpose of designing a ventilation system which could dilute and/or remove the toxic gases to maintain an acceptable pollutant level. The program consisted of two parts. The first part was field measurement during which the concentrations of pollutants and wind velocities were measured at various points inside the tunnel to acquire basic data regarding ambient air quality, piston effects for the different types of trains, and existing ventilation conditions. Weather data (temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, wind direction and velocity) were gathered at many stations, both on the surface and inside the tunnel. The amount of pollutants released by each type of locomotive for various conditions were also measured. The second part of this study involved establishing mathematical models for predicting the air quality of the various proposed ventilation systems. Three different models were used for this work. The first one is a piston effect model which assumes that the gases and air undergo immediate mixing inside the tunnel. The second one is also a piston effect model which assumes that the diffusion ability of the gases is zero. The third one is a conventional ventilation model which was used for natural and mechanical ventilation conditions. From the result of field measurement and mathematical model studies, a ventilation system was chosen with consideration of both ventilation effects and construction costs.

The literature of mine ventilation is very diverse in nature, widely interdisciplinary, and extremely international in scope. Important references are found in indexes, abstracts, government documents, technical reports, journals, conference and symposia proceedings, and monographs. In this decade computer searches of the literature have greatly aided researchers in finding needed items. There is, however, no convenient summary of recent English language literature in coal and non-coal mine ventilation. This paper attempts to fill that gap in the literature. Because of the worldwide provenance of the subject and the attendant publication deluge, this paper covers only current English language publications on ventilation. The writers have examined the field's English language abstracts, indexes, bibliographies, periodicals, technical reports, books, and symposia and conference, proceedings. The survey also considers the field's most important bibliographic data bases. It should be noted that addresses for many of the literature sources listed in the paper are given in the section on literature and data base information sources.

Dust formation and the reaction mechanisms of copper matte particles were investigated in simulated flash-oxidation conditions. The granulated and ground matte consisted of 72% Cu, 4% Fe and 21 % S (by weight). Experiments were conducted by using a laminar flow furnace with a reaction-gas composition ranging from 20% to 75% O2 (by volume) in nitrogen. The particle feeding was carried out by a single-particle method, and samples were quenched after a specified reaction time ([~] 0.05 to 0.4 s) in a cold water film. Experimental temperatures ranged from 800o to 1,300o C. Chemical analysis was used to determine the degree of oxidation, and optical and scanning electron microscopes, combined with energy dispersive analysis, were used for characterization of the reacted particles.

Increasing attention is being paid to laterite nickel ore as an alternative to nickel sulfide ore to act as a feedstock for nickel metal production. While laterite nickel ore accounts for a lion’s share of global nickel resources at approximately 72 percent, it accounts for only 42 percent of the world’s nickel production. In addition, the processing of nickel sulfide ore is confronted with enormous challenges due to deeper drilling requirements, higher production costs and depleting reserves. The nickel content in the nickel laterite ore associated with hydrated iron oxides and silicate minerals limits the application of physical beneficiation methods for the removal of iron. Thus, magnetic reduction roasting followed by magnetic separation has been regarded as one of the attractive routes to concentrate and separate the valuable metals from the impurities.

Kelsey Lake kimberlites are a cluster of eight diamondiferous pipes that occur in the northern State Line kimber lite district of the Colorado-Wyo¬ming diamond province (Coopersmith 1991, 1993) (Fig. 1). This is located at the southern margin of the Wyoming Archean province. Two relatively large pipes and a few smaller bodies define the cluster (Fig. 2). The Kelsey Lake kimberlite cluster has been developed as the first diamond mine in the United States. The cluster was discovered in 1987. Full-scale production began in the spring of 1996. Mining has produced gem-quality diamonds up to 28.3 carats in size. The 30 State Line kimberlites, intruded about 390 million years ago into Proterozoic crystalline rocks, were presumed to be underlain by Archean basement of the Wyoming Province. Nearly all the kimberlite pipes contain diamond but only the Kelsey Lake pipes are economic. The Kelsey Lake kimberlites contain predominately diatreme facies kimberlite, with minor hypabyssal and crater facies rocks locally occurring. Alteration and weathering of the kimberlites is extensive. Petrologic studies indicated an underlying lithosphere that has a largely Proterozoic signature and shows evidence of deep melt and metasomatic events. Current development has concentrated on the two largest pipes. These have been bulk-sampled after geological study (1987) identified the presence of small diamonds and mineral chemistry indicating favorable diamond conditions. A 10-t/hr (11-stph) rotary pan plant was established in 1992 to process thousands of tons of bulk-sample material. Grades and gem-quality diamonds to 14.2 carats in size were recovered. Early in 1995, it was decided to move from evaluation to commercial mining. Production began in early 1996. A 195-t/hr (215-stph) rotary pan plant was built. A water supply system and tailings disposal have also been incorporated. The project straddles the Colorado/Wyoming border. Existing mining permits were amended to incorporate the increased scale and new plant facility. The permits for this project included the following: Colorado mining permit, Wyoming dozing permit, Corps of Engineers Section 404, Colorado NPDES, Wyoming NPDES, Storm water Management Plan, Air Pollution Emission Notice, various Colorado and Wyoming State Engineer and well permits, Substitute Water Sup¬ply Plan, Larimer County Special Use Review, and US Forest Service road use permits. The temporary destruction of a wetlands area was a sensitive issue. It has been addressed through the Clean Water Act Section 404 permit administered by the US Corps of Engineers. This use will be mitigated by creating new, self-sustaining wetlands in the immediate drainage system. A comprehensive and bonded reclamation plan is incorporated in the permits. Diamond mining and ore processing is environmentally benign. No chemicals are used in processing the diamonds. The plant is a water wash facility. The kimberlite ore is inert, as is the granite wall rock. The exposure of the ore body and the subsequent ore processing and waste rock and tailings containments pose no threat of release, leaching or dispersion of any detrimental elements. There is no acid-forming waste. Even a prolonged acid rain environment will not produce a harmful leachate. Slimes containment and clarification ponds will prevent unacceptable levels of suspended solids in water discharge. A three-dimension two-phase (air and dust) computer model was developed to model air velocity and respirable dust distributions in the longwall faces. This paper describes the derivation of the model including the model features, mathematical equations and boundary conditions. Example simulations were also performed for two longwall faces where measured respirable dust and air velocity distributions were available. The results indicated the model can simulate the mine conditions fairly accurately.

Published information on costs of radon-daughter control in uranium mines was analyzed to develop estimates of the cost per ton for any level of radiation exposure control. All data were converted to 1967 cost of living index to provide a common analysis base. Results of the analysis show that the cost per ton increases exponentially as the radiation level is lowered. A linear relationship with the cost of living index is assumed, and equations and graphs are provided to estimate control cost per ton for any exposure control level and cost of living index.

As indicated in the introduction to this paper, it is a sequel to that which I gave to the last annual meeting in Atlanta in march. This paper goes further into aspects of crushing and screening, primarily from the standpoint of circuit control. There has been little published by equipment manufacturers on this subject and this is the first paper on crushing circuit control to be sponsored by Allis-Chalmers corporation. By proper control over the use of crushing energy, we will be able to produce finished products from feed materials uti¬lizing minimum capital for the lowest cost of production. The subject will be discussed as follows. Firstly, we will look briefly at what we are trying to accomplish; Secondly, what is presently available in the way of technology; Thirdly, we will look at a suggested new system of control which will best fit the parameters of the normal crushing and screening operation; As a conclusion, I will summarize the advantages of the new system.

Mineral processing plant operators are faced with the necessity to choose between many different possibilities for plant improvement. Only a few such possibilities, however, can be tested on the industrial site. Steady-state simulators make it possible to assess the effects of several different flowsheet modifications in a few days, thus helping the process engineer to make his choice implement the solution that seems the most appropriate and check it. The example described here is the crushing and grinding circuit of the Shila Gold Mine, jointly owned by CEDIMIN SA and BUENAVENTURA SA, in Peru. Several possible modifications for the purpose of increasing capacity have been simulated and the results assessed in terms of technical quality, investment costs and energy consumption. The best solution indicated by the USIM PAC simulator was implemented and gave a 20% increase in capacity with a pay-back time of two months.

The naturally occurring aged manganese oxide coated on the granular media was found to have a catalytic effect on the removal of low concentration of Mn(II) (-1 ppm) from drinking water. Applying this principle, a manganese removal technique was developed for removal of higher concentration of Mn(II) (-100 ppm) from mine drainage by using various aged filter media and synthesized granular media with manganese oxide coatings. Laboratory-scale continuous granular media column experiments were conducted to assess the feasibility of manganese oxide-coated granular media for Mn(II) removal from synthesized mine drainage. The removals of Mn(II) were evaluated as a function of operation parameters including solution pH, manganese oxide concentration coated on the media, interstitial velocity, and oxidant concentration of influent. Higher solution pH and/or higher manganese oxide concentration promoted the removal of Mn(II) on the oxide-coated granular media under low interstitial velocity. Addition of sodium hypochlorite as an oxidant in the influent resulted in continuously regenerated oxidized surface to serve as the catalyst for Mn(II) oxidation reaction on the surface of oxide-coated media.

The Prairie Creek intrusion, near Murfreesboro, AR, is the site of the most famous diamond mine in North America. Three major rock types are associated with the intrusion-a hypabyssal peridotite, a volcanic breccia in which the majority of diamonds occur, and tuft. Previous studies, including geological, geophysical, petrological, and whole-rock and mineral chemistry are reviewed. The recent suggestion, by other workers, that this intrusion may be more correctly called a lamproite is examined. This has serious implications for diamond exploration in Arkansas and elsewhere in the US.

General mining practices at W. R. Grace's Bonny Lake mine are much the same as those used in open pit phosphate mines in Central Florida, except for the difference in the depth of the overburden which introduces many variations, From 1945 to 1961 the mining at Bonny Lake has been from an area in which the overburden averages from 55 to 60 feet and in several locations exceeded 65 feet. The matrix thickness will average 15 to 18 feet for the areas mined. As you can see from the above depths a total hole depth will average from 70 to 75 feet.

The choice between EPB - and Slurry Shields is influenced by the following factors: grain size distribution, cohesiveness, occurence of boulders, occurence of gas, feasibility of soil separation and muck disposal, and settlement properties of the soil. The simple equation cohesive soils = EPB Shields and non cohesive soils = Slurry Shield is very often superimposed by other facts. For example, the occurence of a large amount of boulders in weak cohesive soils, where the application of roller discs is not recommendable, may lead to the use of a Slurry Shield with a rock crusher, thus accepting the disadvantage of a sophisticated separation plant; whereas the occurence of contaminated groundwater or gas may exclude the use of a Slurry Shield. In the following examples the choice of a Slurry Shield or EPBS will be explained and justified with regard of the above factors.

This paper presents details of an availability study for a fleet of diesel engine operated load-haul-dump (LHD) machines used in a Swedish mine. For the purpose of this study, the LHD machines have been considered as a system comprised of many subsystems like engine, brake, transmission, etc., in series. As availability is dependent on both the reliability and maintainability characteristics of the system, together with reliability, the concepts of maintainability are also discussed. The need for exploring the data for the presence of any structure, which is very common in repairable system data sets, is emphasized with suitable examples. Simple graphical techniques are used for verifying the independent and identically distributed (IID) assumption for the data set. The error introduced due to the use of the exponential distribution in place of more appropriate distributions in estimation of availability and reliability characteristics is analysed.
